Welcome... Wanstead has it all: a great location; a community that continually demonstrates their love for the area; one of the country's most significant parks (according to the former Chief Executive of English Heritage); a diverse line-up of independent retailers; and a rich history waiting to be discovered around every corner. Is this a biased view? Most definitely. As a publication that aims to reflect all that's good about Wanstead, being bias is an inevitable – and happy – consequence. But let's not blindly list Wanstead's pros (we'll leave the cons for others to debate) without adding some substance. Location: they may not be in zone three, but our two Tube stations offer quick access into (or further out of ) the capital. Community: an annual music extravaganza in the park, an annual celebration of local art, an annual fringe festival and no shortage of residents ready to defend and protect the conservation area – need I say more? Wanstead Park: regarded by English Heritage as an important location on a national scale, our local park is filled with history, wildlife and beauty. Independent businesses: the High Street and our index are all that need to be mentioned here. History: from a Roman presence in Wanstead Park to the saga of Wanstead House and the story of a high society scandal that gripped Regency England, there's no shortage of local history stories to tell. I dare say this list could be easily expanded with the biased opinions of others who live, work or visit the area. After all, if you have a vested interest in a location, why wouldn't you be bias towards it? Indeed, such an attitude can be contagious, giving rise to a community that feeds off a virtuous circle of positivity. Just consider the numerous contributors this publication has had the pleasure of featuring over the years, each representing a cog in Wanstead's community machine. It's inevitable that, with so many diverse and interconnecting component parts, such a machine will be a thing of wonder. Lee Marquis, Editor

Parking consultation

A local resident has launched a petition to urge the government to reinstate national research into children and young people's mental health. Natasha Benjamin, who lives on Victory Road, Wanstead, is the founder of Free Your Mind, a childhood domestic violence and mental health support and campaign service. The latest statistics relating to young people's mental health are from 2004 and this information, Natasha says, is no longer sufficient to inform and improve modern services. Visit wavidi.com/fymp

Redbridge Council have launched a parking consultation to 'develop a parking offer that is consistent and fair'. The first phase of the consultation – which will run until 28 August – will aim to discover general views on parking from residents, businesses and visitors to the borough. A second phase scheduled for September will then look at more specific measures. The process will also involve a review of all car parks and parking charges across the borough. Bio-blitz success: rare sightings and huge turnout

The results of the Wren Wildlife Group's recent bio-blitz of Wanstead Park and Wanstead Flats, which aimed to count the many different plant and animal species in the area, have far exceeded expectations. Almost 250 people took part in the weekend of

activities, including 70 participants on an evening bat walk. The group hoped to identify 400 species, but in fact more than 650 were recorded, including a number not previously seen in the area. The rarest sighting was of a black kite flying over the City of London Cemetery.

Local photographer Geoff Wilkinson has launched a series of greetings cards featuring images from his Wanstead Daily Photo blog, which began in October 2012 and has now almost reached 100,000 hits. "A few people have asked us if they can buy the images, so we

have produced them in the form of cards, which they can also frame," said Geoff. Priced £3.95, the cards are printed on archival photographic paper and are available from Geoff's Nightingale Lane gallery and the Wanstead farmers' market. Visit wavidi.com/wdp

Hungry caterpillar mural gives kids an appetite to read © Geoff Wilkinson

What happens when the oil runs out?

A professor of physical chemistry will be giving a talk about the world's future energy problems to members of the Wanstead and Woodford University of the Third Age this month. "The world output of conventional crude oil is set to begin a decline within five years," says

Chris Rhodes, who is director of Freshlands Environmental Actions. The talk at Woodford Memorial Hall on 4 August will explain why fracking is not a long-term solution and why the focus should be on self-sufficient communities. Call 020 8504 7626

Corrections The following corrections apply to the Angels in Wanstead article that appeared in the July 2015 issue of the Wanstead Village Directory.

Snaresbrook Primary School have unveiled a new mural to inspire learning in their nursery garden. Based on Eric Carle's popular children's book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which was first published in 1969, the mural was painted by parents and community artists

Victoria Baskerville and Lisa Tighe. "The mural has evoked a new love of the book in the nursery and across the school, inspiring a love of reading," said Victoria. Both the Eric Carle museum in Massachusetts and the Book Trust have sent congratulatory messages.

Two exhibitions from longrunning photography club

z Ann Williams, the subject of the article, is an internationally respected professor of medieval history and not medical history as was stated. z The correct spelling of the name of Ann’s co-coordinator of the Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth is Diana Korchien. z The Redbridge Sustainability Forum was not set up by Ann Williams and Diana Korchien. It was run by London Borough of Redbridge to share information between the council’s environmental officers and local groups. It was terminated in the autumn of 2013. z Diana Korchien is not involved in Transition Redbridge. She is a founder member of Transition Leytonstone.

The Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society will be presenting two exhibitions of members' work this month and next. The first display will be on show at Wanstead Library from 15 to 29 August, followed by a second display during next month's art trail

at Wanstead United Reformed Church from 5 to 20 September. The images on show will include photos of people, landscapes, architecture and nature. The club – which is one of the oldest in the UK – meet weekly at Wanstead House. Visit wavidi.com/wwps

Participants in the Aldersbrook jumble trail

Good weather and a diverse lineup of music and entertainment enticed some 2,500 people into the Temple enclosure of Wanstead Park for last month's music festival. "We cycled our own smoothies, handled pythons, raced ferrets and climbed Spider

Mountain… We heard many great young local musicians – Shokhed to name but one," said Gill James of the Aldersbrook Families Association. The event cost £19,000 to stage, met almost entirely by ticket sales. Refreshment stalls raised £6,000 for local charities.

Rugby club remembers

HomeFront art: win £100

Wanstead Rugby Club have unveiled an Avenue of Remembrance and a plaque to honour 35 former players who died in the World Wars and the conflict in Afghanistan. The avenue comprises a tree for each player killed in action since the club's foundation (22 in WWI, 12 in WWII and one in Afghanistan). By agreement with the council, the playing fields of Wanstead RFC will also become known as Centenary Fields, in memory of those who lost their lives during the First World War.

Sponsors of the HomeFront art competition – where residents are invited to display art in their front gardens and windows – have announced a £100 prize for the winning home, plus £25 prizes for runners-up. The event, which is part of Art Trail Wanstead, is free to enter and has been sponsored by Bairstow Eves Lettings for the second year running. Participants need to register their home by 30 August and ensure their art is on show during the trail, which runs from 5 to 20 September. Visit wavidi.com/hf15

A community wide jumble trail will take place in Wanstead next month as part of the Wanstead Fringe. Organisers hope to replicate the success of the Aldersbrook jumble trail, which saw 74 residents set up stalls outside their homes in May. Those wishing to sell their

unwanted goods at the Wanstead event – which will take place on 5 September from 12pm to 5pm – need to register their location and specify the type of jumble they will be selling. Categories include clothing, crafts, toys, plants, and furniture. Visit wavidi.com/wjt

egular visitors to Wanstead Park will know that the Temple houses a museum to the history of Wanstead House and the features in its grounds. One of the most prominent surviving features is the Temple itself. It has served a variety of functions over the years and the new exhibition looks in more depth at how it has been used since it was built around 1760.

temple does not seem to have been built. We don't know who designed the present Temple. It may have been the architect John Vardy, who was paid £25 from Earl Tylney's bank account. However, unlike many garden temples, the detailing is very plain. It is in a simple Tuscan style and might have been put up by a builder under the 2nd Earl's direction.

The owner of Wanstead House in the second half of the 18th century was John, 2nd Earl Tylney (1712-1784). Like many other rich young gentlemen, he had been on the Grand Tour of Europe. In Italy, he had seen the great towns and cities of the Renaissance and the remains of ancient Roman civilization. Inspired by Roman architecture, he wanted to build a classical Temple in his garden, like others he would have seen dotted around London. His close neighbour at Wanstead Grove had one, which still stands in a suburban garden on The Avenue.

When first built, the Temple was freestanding, with a portico of four stone columns. It was placed at the end of a double avenue of trees leading from the Heronry Pond. It sat on a low brick-built mound, turfed over when new. This

While in Florence in 1753, John met the young architect William Chambers, later famous for Somerset House in London. Chambers designed a small garden temple in the Doric order, which he subsequently dedicated to the Earl in his Treatise of 1759, noting that it was 'proposed to be executed in his Lordship's gardens at Wanstead'. As part of the Wanstead Park Summer Festival, a new exhibition is on show at the park's Temple, documenting the history of this iconic landmark. In the first of a two-part series, Steve Denford takes a look at the Temple in the heyday of Wanstead House

concealed the ground floor room, entered from behind. Wings were added shortly after the building was finished using the same type of brick. They appear on a plan of Wanstead in 1779. By this time, the Temple sat within its own enclosure, incorporating a lawn in front and ground behind, where a pond was formed. This drained away during the last century.

1822

The 2nd Earl died childless in 1784 and the Wanstead Estate passed to his nephew, James Tylney-Long. His daughter, Catherine, became one of the richest heiresses in the country when she came of age at the end of 1810. She was courted by royalty among others. Her choice of husband, the Regency rake, William WellesleyPole, nephew of the Duke of Wellington, was unfortunate. Together the couple, bearing the faintly ridiculous surname Pole-Tylney-LongWellesley, lavished money on the house, the estate, themselves and a huge entourage to the extent that they were forced to sell first the contents and then the very structure of Wanstead House. It was demolished in 1824. The tragic story of Catherine is told with gusto in a new book The Angel and The Cad by local author Geraldine Roberts.

After Wanstead House was demolished, its grounds were mortgaged and managed by trustees of the Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley family. They stripped the park of its assets, chopping down trees, including the avenue in front of the Temple. The grounds, parts let out for grazing, parts for arable farming, were overseen by gamekeepers who continued to live at the Temple. Next month, we will continue the Temple's story since the fall of Wanstead House, from providing a home to forest keepers before opening to the public at the end of the 20th century.

The Temple Over Time exhibition is on show at the Temple from 1 August to 27 September (open 12pm to 5pm weekends and Bank Holidays). Entry is free. For more information, call 020 7332 1911

1824

On the plan, the Temple is shown as a poultry house. An inventory of the same year suggests that it then housed a menagerie, which we know existed at Wanstead from at least the 1760s. Exotic aviary may be a better description; the keeping of exotic birds was then very fashionable. Lord Tylney's neighbour at Valentines, Sir Charles Raymond, had one that George Edwards FRS visited in 1770 and noted 'some curious birds and other animals, from the East Indies', including a 'snake-eater'.

The sale of the contents of Wanstead House took place over six weeks in the summer of 1822. It included the outbuildings, so we know in detail from the sale catalogue what the Temple then contained. It is described as item No 55, Gamekeeper's Cottage, with 46 different lots. The catalogue shows that there were three beds in the building, which had a parlour – hung rather curiously with pictures of grass – and a well-stocked kitchen. There were numerous nets and traps, including 'five men traps', plus many guns. Outside, there were seven dog kennels, several bird coops and 'the erection of the Pheasantry, with three partitions and net over, 48ft square'.

Whether it's to work, to the shops or to school with your children, Redbridge Council's Smarter Travel Team are keen to encourage more residents to travel by bicycle

S

© Geoff Wilkinson

ummer is finally here and with good weather and big cycle events such as the Tour de France and Tour of Britain, we are seeing more and more people cycling around Redbridge. Cycling is for everyone and whether you are new to it or returning to cycling, our programme of free cycle training will cater to your needs. Our training is delivered by Cycle Confident, whose professional cycle instructors are wellversed in working with complete beginners through to experienced commuters brushing up on their road craft. Training is available for children, families and individuals and can be arranged to start from your home or any other convenient location. You can also sign up for a group training session at one of our new cycle hubs located in Ray Park, Woodford and Valentines Park, Ilford. Here you can borrow a bike if needed, which is ideal for new cyclists. Learning from a hub can be fun and is a great way to meet new people. Just book a session and turn up to ride. Do you have a bike but are unsure if it is safe to ride? We carry out a free basic bike service and repair, which includes inner tube, brake pad, and brake cable replacements if required. Pop down to the Wanstead farmers' market on the High Street on the first Sunday of every month between 11am and 3pm. Our cycling top tips: zz If you're cycling in poor light conditions, use lights and wear a high visibility jacket. zz When wearing a cycle helmet, make sure it's the right size and fits correctly. It should be snug on your head and the straps should be securely tightened. zz Buy a good bicycle lock or chain to deter thieves – lock your bike by securing both the wheels and frame to an immovable object.

zz Learn to fix a puncture – it will save you money and a trip to the bike shop. zz Clean your bike and oil your chain regularly. zz Inflate your tyres to the recommended pressure (printed on the tyre) – you’ll find this makes it easier to pedal and can help reduce punctures. zz Check the weather and dress accordingly – use a dry bag to keep your valuables and spare clothing in if you’ll be commuting in the rain. zz Plan your route before you make the journey – try the TfL journey planner cycle option at www.tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/ For more information on free cycle training and other cycling initiatives in Redbridge, visit www.redbridge.gov.uk/cycling

Ahead of a spiritual creative crafts day at Wanstead United Reformed Church this month, New Thought minister Heather Andrews-Dobbs invites you to open your eyes to the power of colour

W

ithout colour, life would not exist. Each colour is a dimension of energy, many of which exist beyond our sight. Energy creates, supports, changes and sustains the universe. Energy manifests in consciousness and extends out into creation. As the energy moves, it gives off colours (light) and music (sound). Hang crystals in a window that is hit by the sun's rays and watch the beautiful rainbow spectrums reflected on your walls. Stand in front of these light spectrums and experience an amazing energy. In short, we are all influenced by colour. I recall an awesome 'wow' sound of delight when my 11-year-old, at an age when it is not easy to impress, opened the shutters of a hotel room and looked out at the aqua sea of Coral Bay below. For a number of years, I worked in the City and wore the statutory greys and blacks by day. One year, I recall purple coming into fashion. I donned my purple trouser suit that had hung in my wardrobe for years and teamed it with a lemon blouse. As I walked down the street, I recall receiving a multitude of compliments about my outfit. The City was obviously hungry for colour. In the evenings, I would change into the authentic, brighter colours I so loved. I was once in the South of France and had sewn myself a yellow, orange and brown skirt. To my amazement, in the morning sunshine a number of butterflies of similar hue settled on my skirt. They had obviously been attracted by the colour. Unfortunately, I couldn't supply the nectar refreshment they were seeking and after a short while they flew off! One of my friends purchased a SAD (seasonal affective disorder) light box for herself and painted her kitchen walls lemon. She was of Italian origin and missed the bright, vibrant colours of Italy, particularly on a winter's day in the UK. When we increase the vibrancy of the colours in our lives, we change the way we feel.

As an ordained New Thought minister, I conduct wedding ceremonies, blessings for children and celebrations of life when loved ones pass over. I encourage families to select their own meaningful verses for their ceremony and to wear the colours that they most love. Mother Nature provides us with an amazing variety of colours to nurture us. Recall some of the beautiful sunsets you have witnessed during your lifetime. Even on a train journey home through east London, a beautiful sunset can be so magnificent and uplifting. This month I am running an Angels, Hearts and Creative Crafts Fayre at the Wanstead United Reformed Church. So come along and experience the effects of colour for yourself. The Angels, Hearts and Creative Crafts Fayre will take place at Wanstead United Reformed Church from 11am to 5pm on 29 August. For more information, call 020 8529 8097

The anniversary of Dame Agatha Christie's birthday will be celebrated with a murder mystery evening at Wanstead Library next month. Here Jonathan Woolf takes a look back at the mysteries of a mystery writer

W

hich eminent writer wrote romances under the name Mary Westmacott? Which writer, in 1946, wrote Come, Tell Me How You Live, an account of work on an archaeological dig under the surname Mallowan? And finally, which writer's disappearance in December 1926 sparked the largest manhunt in British history for a missing person? The answer to all three questions is the same: Agatha Christie. Let's disentangle the questions. Christie was born Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller in Torquay in 1890 to an English mother and an American father. She showed an interest in writing, but it was fitful and largely confined to short stories on the subject of madness, dreams and spiritualism, which were all particular interests and reflected the preoccupations of the time very clearly – the time of Freud and psycho analysis, Jung, and the mediums who practised their arts at séances. She married Archibald Christie on Christmas Eve 1914. Settling in London, she wrote her first Poirot novel, The Mysterious Affair At Styles, in 1920, and the fact that Poirot is Belgian should come as no surprise given the armada of Belgian refugees who had taken refuge in England during the First World War. Many had been sheltered in Torquay. Her only child, a daughter, had been born in August 1919, but her marriage failed. It's now believed that her disappearance was an attempt to embarrass Archibald Christie, but one that went badly wrong when 1,000 police officers were drafted in to search for her, along with a vast number of volunteers. Her disappearance made the front pages of newspapers worldwide. She never referred to the incident in her autobiography, by which time she had become the world's most popular detective writer, feted for The Mousetrap, and a household name. As for Mary Westmacott, Christie, one of the most furtive and reclusive of writers, had always written under pseudonyms. One of her earliest unpublished efforts was even written under

the rather deflating name Monosyllaba. The six Westmacott novels were written between 1930 and 1956 and are semi-autobiographical in nature, and whilst they have sometimes been written off as romantic fiction they are rather more to do with love and family relations. She certainly valued them highly. Regarding the second question, though she had travelled to Egypt in 1910 when she was barely 20, her interest in archaeology developed many years later as a result of meeting her second husband, the eminent archaeologist Max Mallowan. In fact, the second question is a slight cheat as a look at the title page of her 1946 book shows she wrote not as Mrs Max Mallowan, but as Agatha Christie Mallowan. Apart from her autobiography, published posthumously in 1977, a year after her death, it was her only autobiographical work. Much more than just a detective writer, she wrote plays, poetry and short stories and was an invaluable help in her husband's archaeological projects. Perhaps one reason for her reclusive reputation is this: when reporters were looking for her in London, she was actually in Syria and Iraq, leaving them – as she had in December 1926 – trailing in her wake. The murder mystery evening at Wanstead Library will take place on 17 September. For more information, call 020 8708 7400

In the hands of Roger Estop, a chair can be much more than an essential piece of furniture. Donna Mizzi sits up and takes notice ahead of next month's Art Trail Wanstead

S

hoppers stopped in their tracks when Roger Estop's work first went on show in Wanstead High Street in the old window of Joliffe's. For many passers-by, it was the point when they realised that Art Trail Wanstead was more than window candy. Roger, the head of urban design at Chelmsford City Council, works on some enormous schemes by day. And at night, at his family's home in St Margaret's Road, Aldersbrook, he frequently dreams up characterful small items of furniture – such as the Rennie Mackintosh-inspired ladder chair made up of 58 wooden clothes hangers ("I almost cleared out John Lewis"), or the country chair made from walking sticks and corduroy trousers. For other light-hearted experiments, he has created a chair out of brooms (right) and from a bicycle. Roger says: "I enjoy taking one domestic object and turning it into another. For me, humour is a very important part." Of his beautifully structured and comfortable Lower Case chair (above), Design Week commented: "Is it just a gimmick or a 21st century design icon? You decide." Last year, his carefully crafted contemporary chairs were set in High Street boutiques including Find, Coco and Azzurra, again attracting quizzical glances and then appreciation of the art involved. And this year, he hopes that his participation will encourage other artists who do more unusual work to "come out to play" by becoming involved in the art trail. Roger also loves drawing and photography, and has taken part in some prestigious photography exhibitions over the past 30 years, including

at the Photographers' Gallery in Leicester Square. But he has always had a special love of 3D work. So, in the 1980s, when he needed a perfectly sized table to fit a room in his former family home, he decided to make it. An unused and untuneful guitar was cut and steam-bent into a chair. Wooden spoons became a CD rack and coat hooks. The innovation continues around his home, "tolerated" by his partner Sarah, who is also an artist, and their two daughters. "If you design and make something, it's rather like cracking a puzzle," he explains. He particularly enjoys making chairs for their human-scale size and design potential, focusing on styles to appeal to children as well as adults, and often uses attractive birch plywood. Roger admits to committing to the art trail as a way of pushing on and finishing new projects. In the future, he may make more chairs to sell, but for now he enjoys showing them. Because of the space they take up, he admits he has to store some away. But an inventive mind looks for unconventional solutions… To find a suitable area for his latest design, Roger stops, scans round the kitchen, looks up and then contemplates the best way to fix a chair upsidedown to the ceiling. A

rt Trail Wanstead 2015 will follow three main paths and invites local residents to get involved. The event springs from the central trail, with art shown by local artists in our area's shops, businesses and public buildings. Then, for the second year running, there will be HomeFront, where everyone is invited to put art in their front gardens and windows, including work by families and children. And, for 2015, there will be a new and colourful pathway – yarn bombing.

Roger Estop and some of his chairs

Art Trail Wanstead: Individuals, art groups and school children will show their work, mainly in and around the High Street shops and premises. The deadline has passed for including artist's names in the trail brochure, but keen artists can still join the trail (email donnamizzi@btinternet.com).

© Marcus Tylor (marcustylor.com)

HomeFront: You don't need the expertise of Alan Titchmarsh to make your front garden delightful. Just add art, and you may also win a prize from the HomeFront sponsor, Bairstow Eves Lettings. If possible, be inspired by the main trail's 'We are the Environment' theme. This can be done through the subject matter or via the choice of materials used. If fascinating front gardens encourage more people to walk past local homes rather than drive, that will be a positive result in itself. There is no entry fee for participation, but do send some photos and details (visit artgroupwanstead.com).

Some of the artists taking part in this year's Art Trail Wanstead

Yarn bombing: Do you want to create something a bit different for the trail? Why not knit a jazzy coat for a High Street tree or crochet jolly bunting for the railings? The wilder and woollier the creations, the better. Residents, adults and children will be invited to contribute to the streetscape of Wanstead with yarn bombing – a form of art that gives new life to leftover yarn, making it well suited to this year's environment-themed trail. Art Group Wanstead, which runs the event, will be organising yarn bombing workshops during the trail, but eye-catching yarn work is needed to go up in the High Street at the beginning of September. So if you can create anything suitable from now onwards, please deliver your artwork – on Saturdays if possible – to coordinator Sid Beg at Heads 'N' Tails, 23 Wanstead High Street (email wansteadknitwits@gmail.com).

Contrary to popular opinion, many dragonflies are long-lived creatures. And some eat fish and tadpoles. Fact or fiction? Tim Harris investigates in the sixth of a series of articles exploring local biodiversity

A

Collectively known as the Odonata, dragonflies and damselflies are flying insects with a threepart body. Their eyes and mouth are in the head, the thorax supports the legs and wings, and the long section, or abdomen, plays the key role in reproduction. They have two pairs of wings, and each pair acts independently of the other, giving them greater control of their movement in the air. This is why dragonflies, in particular, can cut such dashing figures as they zip at speed over the surface of ponds, stopping so abruptly it looks like they've hit an invisible wall, then changing direction just as rapidly. Dragonflies rest with their wings held out at right angles to the body, while damselflies fold them back along the body. Dragons are chunkier, more robust creatures. For example, an emperor is at least 8cm long and can attain speeds of 30 miles per hour. But despite the fact that we think of them as creatures of the air, most of their life is spent – unseen – as nymphs underwater, where the larger species are actually quite aggressive predators. If you were to tell someone that dragonflies eat fish, there's a fair chance that they would look at you incredulously, but when the larger species are in their aquatic, larval stage, they may indeed eat tadpoles and small fish. Their life cycle is described as partial metamorphosis: it involves three stages, unlike the four stages of a butterfly or moth. Females lay eggs in fresh water or on vegetation growing from it. The eggs hatch after a short while and the larvae, or nymphs, that emerge feed and grow in the water. This takes time. For some damselflies, it is just a matter of a few months before they emerge, but for the larger dragonflies

© Tim Harris

s with so many aspects of the natural world, we are well-endowed with dragonflies, and their smaller cousins the damselflies, in the Wanstead area. The reason? Fresh water, which is absolutely vital for these insects' life cycle. The lakes in Wanstead Park and on Wanstead Flats, not to mention the River Roding, provide perfect habitats for them. Broad-bodied chaser

it can take several years – five years for a goldenringed dragonfly. Emergence involves climbing up a stem of grass, rush or sedge and drying out in the sun, so the larval case splits open and the young adult (called a teneral) can break free. It takes a little while for the creature to colour and for its wings to dry and toughen up sufficiently to support flight. The last stage of the life cycle is relatively short, but may still be four or six weeks. During the final act of the dragon's life, the overarching imperative is to find mates and so produce the next generation. This formula sounds complicated but it has produced results for around 250 million years. When giant dragons flew in the Cretaceous period, there wasn't a mammal to be seen. Pond-dipping during a bio-blitz in Wanstead Park recently uncovered the larvae of several damselfly species, plus broad-bodied chaser, common darter, black-tailed skimmer and emperor dragonflies. So the prospects look good for populations locally – provided the water remains unpolluted. One toxic spill and they could all be wiped out. The first species of the year – usually the large red damselfly – may appear on mild days in March. Numbers and variety increase during the spring, reaching a peak in August. The last hawkers may still be on the wing in October or November. For more information about wildlife in the local area, visit wrengroup.org.uk

Jonathan Diamond, head of family law at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, offers some insight into the statistics surrounding marriage and divorce among the over 65s

T

he Office for National Statistics (ONS), in an analysis of the results of the 2011 census, has reported that 9% of people aged over 65 were divorced in 2011, which is double the number from that age group that divorced in 2001. They warn that divorce in later years is especially damaging because "relationships are particularly important for older people as they are more likely to have lost people close to them and need daily assistance". The reasons for this rise are complex, but can broadly be said to result from: zz Longevity: 65 is no longer considered old. People are living longer and living better. Many work into their seventies and still look forward to a long retirement. zz Later marriage: the ONS also report that the mean age for marriage in the UK in 2012 (this includes second and subsequent marriages) is 36.5 for men and 34 for women. This is eight years older for both sexes than in 1972. If marriages on average last as long as they ever did, then a rise in the age of divorcees is unsurprising. zz Finances: the growing financial independence of women, who are more likely than in the past to be reaching pension age with good incomes secured by long and successful careers. Even where this is not the case, a number of important decisions in the Family Courts over recent years will ensure that they receive what they perceive to be a fair share of the assets accrued during the marriage. The divorce laws are no different for more elderly divorcing couples. However, the financial impact upon them can certainly be more significant, as they have less time and opportunity to acquire further assets or supplement their income in a way that a younger couple might have. Their asset pot is more likely to be finite, with both parties having retired and with little or no opportunity to add wealth. As with every

divorcing couple, the income and assets that provided a home and lifestyle for them jointly will then have to be divided to provide for two separate households and, in the vast majority of cases, both parties have to accept significant changes in their lifestyle. Although the rise in 'silver divorce' is real, it is not the only story. The ONS further reported that the largest percentage increase in the number of marriages between 2011 and 2012 was for men and women aged 65 to 69, rising by 25% and 21% respectively. However, the rise of the older divorced population to nearly 800,000 people has brought warnings that many lives will be damaged. A study last autumn from the International Longevity Centre UK said there were increased prospects of loneliness and premature dependency, together with "negative health and money repercussions". Divorce is never easy, whatever your age, but with the right help and support from friends and family and good legal advice, divorce needn't be the end of the world. For most people, even if it takes them a while to appreciate it, it is often the start of a whole new exciting chapter and there is no reason why that should be any different for the over 65s. For more information and advice on divorce, call Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000

Following last month's heatwave – during which Wanstead recorded the fourth highest temperature this area has seen in over 150 years – local weather enthusiast Scott Whitehead offers an insight into the statistics of summer so far, and explains why it has been bad news for the fish in Wanstead Park

I

t has been a warm and very dry summer up to now. Data up to 13 July shows that the season so far is the warmest since 2010. Going back to 1985, only one year was warmer– 2003 - the year when the UK temperature record was set in Brogdale, near Faversham, Kent. Though June started cool and cloudy, it was followed by a warm July. Many UK records were broken on 1 July – Wanstead saw the mercury climb to 36.1°C, easily beating my old July record of 34.5°C. It also exceeded the region's July record of 35.9°C, set in 1868 – indeed, it was the fourth highest temperature this area has seen since local records began in 1848. The feat of the hottest July day ever, recorded at Heathrow Airport on 1 July, has caused controversy among some climate watchers, who argue that the site cannot have valid records because of the close proximity of jet engines and the vast expanse of concrete. The 36.7°C

recorded between 3pm and 3.30pm exceeded the previous record of 36.5°C set at the Royal Horticultural Garden at Wisley, Surrey, in 2006. It has been pointed out that the reading far exceeded that recorded at Northolt, another airfield close by, by 1°C. I think, however, that the reading is valid because so many other sites exceeded their record that day. I'm often asked why my own weather station is not used for official readings. The simple answer is that, being in a suburban garden, it is too sheltered to qualify for the open exposure that the Met Office demands. But, apart from the exposure, everything is as representative as possible to conditions set by the Met Office. When readings differ it is simply because the character of the area is warmer or colder than official stations, the closest of which is St James's Park. A study of June's data revealed that maxima at Wanstead was, on average, 0.3°C warmer than

To advertise, please call 020 8819 6645 or visit www.wansteadvillagedirectory.com

August 2015 Heathrow and 0.6°C warmer than St James's Park. This obviously had a bearing on the mean temperatures of the region, Wanstead being 1.1°C cooler than Heathrow and 1.2°C cooler than St James's Park. In terms of rainfall, Wanstead was wettest, but only by 4mm.

53

Water is pumped into Heronry Pond in Wanstead Park

So, all in all, the weather station at Wanstead is a pretty good measure of our local climate, as close as possible to what official conditions for such measurements demand. I am currently in the process of trying to find a local site that will fulfil Met Office conditions fully, but it is a long, drawnout process that will take time to organise. Anyone familiar with the lakes of Wanstead Park will know that rainfall has been sorely lacking this summer. Indeed, monthly rainfall has been well below average for every month since March. Just 17mm fell during the whole of June (34% of the average). The level of the Heronry Pond particularly suffers, continuing to fall despite the fact that 1,300 cubic metres of water is pumped in from a borehole every day. This lack of throughput leads to other problems, including the formation of blue-green algae, which starves fish of oxygen and can be deadly for dogs who swim in the water. Friends of Wanstead Park are aware of the problem and have taken measures to combat it. During the same week as the hottest July day ever, we also experienced a cracking overnight thunderstorm – the kind that shocks you out of bed with Hammer Horror-esque thunder and lightning. Monitoring the radar, it appeared that Wanstead was right under the path of a couple of thunderstorms, with thunder rumbling for over an hour. I counted 30 flashes of lightning a minute and, as I tried in vain to photograph the event, I noticed the phenomena of lightning streamers, where dots of light can be seen on the ground before each lightning flash. The sky at one point was alive with lightning, so much so that a couple of shots I took were of the moment

night became day in my garden, the world's most powerful flashgun! Some 20.1mm of rain fell during the two storms, a total that was second only to Bedford on the day. The rain, which represents 47% of what falls in an average July, fell at a rate of up to 60mm per hour – far too heavy for it to have time to penetrate into the ground that this area so desperately needs and Wanstead Park is now looking very brown and parched. There were 112,833 lightning strikes across the UK and Ireland between 9pm on 3 July and 9am on 4 July. Wanstead seems to be leading something of a charmed life for thunderstorms these past couple of years. Last month's storms were the fourth time the region has experienced a really good light show, complete with multiple lightning strikes and loud thunderclaps. From laughing gas to alcohol, PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team looks at a range of 'legal highs' – past and present – and outlines the risks they carry

T

Nitrous oxide (N2O): Commonly know as laughing gas, N2O has many legitimate uses, both in medicine and in common items in your home, like whipped cream canisters. It is usually supplied in small grey containers, which are readily available and legal to buy. Users then inhale the gas from a balloon. The risks attached to the inhalation of N2O include loss of blood pressure, fainting and, potentially, a heart attack. Other reported side effects include euphoria, nausea, vomiting, concentration problems, nerve damage and damage to the central nervous system. However, as there is no consistency, it can affect the same person differently each time. Solvents, aerosols and gases: These are illegal to sell to anybody under the age of 18 and they are terribly dangerous. Signs of use include plastic bags (used for inhaling), empty containers of glues and aerosols and cans that sound as if they still contain liquid, but do not spray when the nozzle is pressed. The effects can be extreme 'drunkenness', disorientation or a blank expression, and the environment in which these substances are often taken can prove dangerous, such as near busy roads. Magic mushrooms: In 2005, the Drugs Act was amended to clarify that all forms of magic mushrooms are a Class A drug, not just when they are prepared, but also when they are fresh. Hallucinogens can make people do crazy things and the drug can be stored in the body for a year. It can also give people flashbacks years later. Khat: Since June 2014, khat has been a Class C drug and carries with it the same legalities as any other drug in this category, both in terms of possession and supply (which has been covered in a previous article in this series). It has been banned because it contains already banned ingredients that are known to cause harm.

© Neil Palmer/CIAT

here are, unfortunately, many 'legal highs' on the market. They can, however, be just as dangerous as controlled substances and they affect people in many different ways.

Khat leaves

Poppers: These are usually found in the form of a liquid chemical, sold in a small, quite often colourful, bottle. They are made up of a group of chemicals called alkyl nitrites. They dilate the blood vessels allowing more blood to get to the heart. Used for many reasons, the negative effects can have catastrophic results, increasing the chances of blindness, heart attack and death. Highly flammable, they can burn skin on contact. Smoking and alcohol: It would be wrong not to mention two of the worst 'legal highs'. The negative impact these can have if taken in excess are well documented. Although some of these examples are not classed as controlled substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, police have other powers that can be used to help tackle the abuse of these substances, such as preventing illegal sales or any anti-social behaviour surrounding their use. For advice on drugs, visit talktofrank.com or call 0800 77 66 00 The Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team run a contact point at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. T-Space is a full service Design and Build company. Our background is in free thinking home design, working with clients to design their ideal environment. We often speak of ‘tailored living space’, and architectural practice is still at the heart of our business. In recent years, however, we have extended our remit to include the construction of our projects. This provides our clients with a seamless service. It means we are free to pursue excellence without having to work through third parties. The only people involved are our clients and us, so we can concentrate on optimising the outcome, with the flexibility to react to site conditions and changing hearts.

Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the fifth of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Norman Olley looks back on a life of photography that all began with a Kodak Box Brownie

I

© Norman Olley

have been interested in photography all my life. When I started work, the first thing I purchased was a Kodak Box Brownie with a close-up attachment. After photographing my school friends, I tried some table-top pictures, which I printed by exposing photographic paper in a wooden frame to the sun and developing them in a dish. During National Service in the RAF, I bought a 35mm folding camera and started using an enlarger in the darkroom on the camp. Later, I traded up to a Pentax reflex camera and visited the Isle of Man TT Races to photograph the riders and their motorbikes. When I married, I moved from Kent to Wanstead and joined the Leytonstone and Wanstead Camera Club, which met in the Forest Room at Wanstead House Community Centre, where I became secretary and eventually chairman. One of the members specialised in weddings and suggested I 'have a go'. I therefore joined the National Weddings Company at Epping and started taking photographs at Saturday weddings. I soon found the task involved more than photography, the main problem being the organisation of people, who sometimes could be difficult and I had many hair-raising and humorous situations. Meanwhile, I converted my loft into a darkroom and, although I made some colour cibachrome prints, I mainly preferred processing black and white. The club disbanded in 1999 and I joined the Woodford Photographic Society, which met in an old dancing studio in Wanstead. Although by now I had become digital and took pictures in colour, I often converted them to monoprints. The society moved premises last year, back to Wanstead House, and I became treasurer. I am also treasurer of the Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group and am able to combine both interests on walks in Wanstead Park and other outings. Recently, the club had an exhibition at Valentines Mansion and I was fortunate in that one of my prints was chosen by the public in a prize draw and was presented to the winner.

Natalie Tomlinson would like you to try your luck in the Haven House Children's Hospice raffle. Winning a prize may not be guaranteed, but knowing the money raised will be put to good use is a certainty

H

aven House Children's Hospice provides a range of support to life-limited children and their families. This includes planned respite, short break and end-of-life care, as well as services designed to improve emotional and physical wellbeing, across The White House (our Woodford Green home), our Holistic Care Centre and in the local community. Since 2003, and particularly over the last five years, the growth in demand for our services has been dramatic. Since opening, we have cared for over 600 children and families across north and east London, west Essex and east Hertfordshire. One such family is the Torrance family from Belgrave Road in Wanstead. Dylan, aged 11, lives with his parents and 13-year-old brother Callum. He has a chromosome disorder so rare that there are only 10 known cases worldwide. Whilst little is known about the condition, one thing is certain – his life will be shortened. Caring for Dylan is a 24/7 job. He was recently diagnosed with a very rare form of epilepsy, where seizures can be virtually non-stop. During a particularly bad period, he had 400 in 13 hours; every one of these can be life-threatening. When Dylan is at home his family feel like hostages, held to ransom by the severity of his seizures. They are unable to leave the house. What Haven House offers them is a break. Without this, they would not have coped as a family for so long. Janie, his mum, said: "As I know the experienced and highly trained nurses are able to care for all Dylan's needs, I am able to relax for a few precious days a year and get a full night's sleep." Dylan's family don't know what is going to happen next and having to watch their muchloved son and brother deteriorate before their eyes is heartbreaking. What they do know is that Haven House will be there to help them whenever they need it.

The chance to drive a sports car is one of the raffle prizes on offer

Each year the hospice needs to find £2.8m; only around 30% of which comes from government sources. The remainder comes from the generosity of individuals and organisations in the community. A fundraising initiative now available to take part in is our annual raffle. Now in its second year, the raffle raises much-needed funds, while providing players with the chance to win a variety of prizes. By entering, you will not only be helping Haven House to make a difference to those they care for, but you will also be in with a chance of winning £1,000 in cash, as well as other fantastic prizes including: a cut, colour and treatment at a Sassoon Salon and £150 Marks and Spencer voucher; the chance to drive a sports car for a week; or a Samsung TV. Other ways that you can support Haven House include: donations; fundraising; volunteering (from administration roles and gardening to helping at events and working in our shops); or by attending our events – take your pick from challenge events to our 'Pumpkin Plod' and evenings with celebrities to golf days. To buy raffle tickets (priced £1 each), visit raffleplayer.com/HavenHouseCH For more information, call 020 8505 9944 or visit havenhouse.org.uk

and a stint at Sheesh in Chigwell, I decided to set up my own events company. It was while helping a friend with her wedding that I was introduced to Packfords. Although I have lived in Wanstead for many years, I had never attended an event at Packfords and was so surprised to discover such a lovely venue with beautiful gardens so close to home! I really enjoyed dealing with Sarah, Maria and the rest of the team and Debra offered me the role of ‘Events Manager’ in January 2014. Our

Debra how long have you been running the hotel? I took over the running of the hotel in 1999 and undertook some major renovations, extending our bar area and ‘Hardy Room’ to allow us to host Wedding ceremonies as well as Wedding receptions in our ‘Garden Suite’. Each bedroom was also completely refurbished with new bathrooms and stylish interiors – I wanted to create a warm, homely and inviting atmosphere while maintaining the charm and character of the Edwardian building.
