For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learnt to talk and we learnt to listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need do is make sure we keep talking.

If the above is a somewhat more profound opening gambit than you have come to expect from this publication, it’s because those are the words of one of the greatest scientific minds in the history of the world, the late Professor Stephen Hawking.

Being known for the accessible way in which he communicated his discoveries and theories, it seems to be an apt quote to remember him by. Apt also for this publication, which thrives on the fact that it belongs to a community that communicates. And by appreciating this communication – be it through campaign groups, neighbourhood watches or local clubs and societies – one can align Professor Hawking’s comments about mankind’s achievements with the smaller scale workings of a suburban community. Indeed, communities only exist because – as the professor points out – we learnt to talk and listen. So, let’s keep doing just that.

And if you’re finding this is all still too profound, let’s dial it down with a final quote from the man who spent much of his time examining the origin of the universe: “I can’t disguise myself with a wig and dark glasses – the wheelchair gives me away.”

Wanstead High School is set to undergo a ‘huge revamp’ to provide new and improved facilities for pupils and the wider community. The proposed scheme will see existing classrooms replaced with new teaching blocks, upgraded dining and sports facilities and the construction of a leisure complex and swimming pool. “Proposals for the schemes will be presented to Cabinet followed by submission of a planning application. Funding the project will come from capital investment.

Playground designers begin working on plans for Wanstead Park

Designers met with campaigners and City of London representatives at the potential playground site, an area at the back of the Temple

As part of an initiative to increase awareness of death, with a view to helping people make the most of their lives, Compassionate Funerals will be hosting a Travelling Light Death Cafe at Wanstead Library on 6 April from 6pm to 7.30pm (free). “Join us in a relaxed setting to drink tea or coffee and eat cake while discussing anything you want in relation to death… This is not a grief support session and is not suitable for the recently bereaved,” said a spokesperson for the Aldersbrookbased funeral director. Experts in natural play structures visited Wanstead Park last month to begin the process of designing a potential playground in the Grade II* listed historic parkland.

Jo Blackman, chair of the Aldersbrook Playground Campaign, said: “We can’t wait to see their designs, which will help people visualise how play can be integrated into the park.” Redbridge Council has agreed to support site maintenance costs, and there are plans to fundraise for equipment once the City of London gives the project the green light.

Painting with weasels’ tails: discover Chinese art techniques

An artist who produced a 1,000-piece jigsaw of local scenes will be displaying his original paintings and the remaining copies of the puzzle at The Stow Brothers this month. “My wife and I have always enjoyed doing jigsaws and we were inspired by a favourite of ours – of village houses in Southwold – to design one of our own,” said Neil Clayden, who combined 25 of his paintings of Wanstead landmarks to create the puzzle (priced £18.50). The project has raised over £100 for the charity Bloodwise.

The art of Chinese brush painting will be demonstrated at Wanstead House this month.

“Jean Turton is a former chairman of the Chinese Brush Painting Society. Pupils from Aldersbrook Primary School led Team Redbridge to fourth place in the recent London Youth Games, picking up the Excellent Sportsmanship Award in the process. The young athletes won the right to represent the borough after competing against 31 other local schools. “We had a fantastic time… As the school’s PE coordinator, I was very proud of the children for putting in 100% effort. My hope is they will continue this as they move on from Aldersbrook to their respective high schools,” said Aslam Hussain.

Skylarks are groundnesting birds. They breed from April to early August

The City of London Corporation has installed temporary notices on Wanstead Flats to raise awareness of ground-nesting birds in the area, which has the only significant population of skylarks within a seven-mile radius of the centre of London. “It is hoped that people using the Flats will take notice of the message to stay on the paths and keep dogs on leads in this area while the birds are nesting, throughout spring and summer,” said a spokesperson. The signs include artwork by children from Woodgrange Infant School.

Following the Friends of Wanstead Parklands’ recent AGM, the group has said it is ‘delighted’ by recent progress. Plans for the park’s future are nearing completion and uncertainties over the Environment Agency’s new flood management regulations have been clarified.

Although this means an expenditure of £5m to £10m may be required to bring the park’s dams up to standard, a positive effect is that other works, such as desilting and relining of the lakes, could be carried out within three years as part of the engineering project.

Signs of spring: guided walk through Wanstead Park to see bluebells

As part of its 125th year anniversary celebrations, Wanstead Golf Club will be holding an open day on 7 April (£10, including a round of golf ) to encourage more residents to take up the sport. The Overton Drive club – which first opened as a nine-hole course on 25 November 1893 – will be offering membership discounts on the day as well as free coaching lessons. “We employ some of the latest technology to help you develop your game,” said club professional David Hawkins. Residents are invited to join the Friends of Wanstead Parklands for a two-hour circular walk through the park this month to see the famed bluebells and other signs of spring.

“Wanstead Park is considered to be one of the best springtime places to see native UK bluebells in the London and Essex areas,” said local historian Richard Arnopp, who will be leading the walk with botanist Tricia Moxey.

Litter pickers help keep a snowcovered George Green clean

Wanstead High School dancers are champions of London

A small group of residents braved the snow last month to take part in Wanstead’s Great British Spring Clean. “Despite the wintry conditions we managed to collect a lot of litter and make areas such as George Green and Cambridge Park Road look much better. Hopefully, just in time for some warmer weather,” said organiser Dan Slipper. The event was the first in a series of litter picks planned for 2018. The next day of action will take place on 12 May. Pupils from Wanstead High School were crowned winners of the London Youth Games dance competition at the Copperbox Arena in Stratford last month. “The 13 dancers put on a stunning performance… I’m incredibly proud of them and their teachers, Miss White and Miss Seaman. They all put in an exceptional effort during their lunchtimes and after school,” said Headteacher Bob Hamlyn. The students will now go on to represent London in the National Schools’ Competition in Stoke on Trent this month.

WANSTEAD The decline in the UK’s wildlife over the last few decades is shocking, but you could help reverse the trend by being part of a new project to transform Wanstead into what may be London’s first multi-garden nature reserve. Alex Deverill asks for your support in creating a Wild Wanstead

D

id you realise the UK is ranked as one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world? The last few decades have seen dramatic declines in the numbers of many of our butterflies, bees and other insects. Since 1995, London’s sparrow population has plummeted by around 75%, starlings by nearly 60% and blackbirds by more than a quarter, and hedgehogs have virtually disappeared from many areas.

London’s gardens play a vital role as a home for wildlife, but like many parts of the city, Wanstead gardens are getting squeezed as room is needed for parking, patios and extensions. What each of us does with the space that’s left – the plants we choose and the wildlife-friendly elements we include – can really make a big difference.

That’s why we’ve started Wild Wanstead – and we’d love you to get involved. It’s an exciting project to create a multi-garden nature reserve here in the heart of Wanstead. It’s the first time something like this has been attempted in London, as far as we know. We’re asking the community to add their gardens, balconies or other outdoor space to the jigsaw of the nature reserve by making one or two small changes, like planting pollinator-friendly flowers, greening up an unused corner of their

driveway, growing ivy up a fence or building a log pile for beetles.

It’s easy to get involved. Just think about the outdoor space you’ve got and any areas you could make more wildlife-friendly, then adopt one or two ‘Wild Ways’ – most are straightforward and won’t need much in the way of time, money or gardening expertise. All the information you may need, including ideas for plants and local suppliers, can be found on our website. You can also pick up a free Wild Wanstead window sticker from Stow Brothers or Heads ‘N’ Tails on the High Street to show your space is part of the nature reserve.

Wanstead Village 2018 Jo Blackman is a Labour Party candidate for the new Wanstead Village ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why she thinks she deserves your vote on 3 May

I

have lived locally for the last 10 years.

My husband and I chose this area to bring up our young family and we have spent many happy hours on Wanstead High Street, in Wanstead Library and using the nearby playground and children’s centre.

I am an active member of the local community and a busy campaigner and fundraiser. I have led a number of local campaigns. I set up the Aldersbrook Playground Campaign to address the lack of play facilities in the south of Redbridge. I am vice-chair of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands, where I continue to champion play and investment in the park. I have set up the Wanstead Park Nature Club to encourage children and their families to explore nature and I also recently secured £10,000 of funding for books for my daughters’ school’s new bus library.

I understand and share many of the concerns we’ve been hearing on the doorstep while campaigning. People are worried about rising crime, road safety, pollution, the housing crisis, worsening inequality, Brexit and the impact on local services of cuts imposed by the national government.

Local government is at the front line on many of these issues and we really can make a difference, which is why these local elections are so important for Wanstead Village.

Along with fellow Labour candidates Paul Donovan and Daniel Morgan-Thomas, I’ve already been busy campaigning on many of these issues, like reversing cuts to the crime budget, reinstating the old W12 bus timetable and introducing 20mph speed limits on residential roads.

My professional career has been spent campaigning at a national, European and international level for children’s rights, the environment and for the Labour Party. I would like to bring this knowledge of how to effect change to my role as a councillor, championing the needs of children, the environment and the local services that our communities rely on, and generally supporting all of our residents.

I have been active in the Labour Party for many years, but the Brexit referendum and Trump’s victory in the US were a real wake-up call – if we do not stand up for the issues we care about, we cannot assume that others will do so for us.

I hope I will have the opportunity to represent Wanstead Village as a councillor and work with local residents to make a difference.

Here’s why he thinks he deserves your vote on 3 May

I

am delighted to be standing in Wanstead Village for election to Redbridge Council (I stood in other wards before). I have lived in Redbridge all my life, except for seven years in Leyton in the 1980s. I was educated at Churchfields School in South Woodford, followed by Buckhurst Hill High. After school years, I started work as a trainee accountant, qualifying in 1979.

In all my working roles, I have always been commuting on the Central Line – it’s like a red ribbon through my life. My wife hears my frustration with the service, but as a council, Redbridge should do far more to coordinate interaction with TfL to improve it.

Despite being a chartered accountant, I try to look positively at challenges in the world around me and come up with practical solutions. I’ve never been interested in ‘doing it that way because we’ve always done it that way’. I enjoy talking about issues and problems and looking with an open mind for new solutions that do not cost us money.

Only recently I had a Labour canvasser on my doorstep, and as we talked, he was agreeing with lots of my ideas and views on issues locally. I didn’t have the heart to tell him my allegiances have, throughout my life, been with the Liberal movement. I am a Liberal because I see no point, or future, in dogmatic shouting at others who don’t agree with my perspective on things. Some of my best friends support other parties but we respect each other and have some great debates.

I work for Abell Morliss, my own accountancy practice, where we look after small businesses.

This has helped me gain awareness of what people trying to get started in business need: friendly advice from people who have done it,

not stuff out of books. They need their council to lead in providing resources so they can get their feet on the ground. We know about silicon roundabout in London. What about a tech ribbon from Wanstead to Gants Hill? With leadership, the resources will follow.

Looking at our High Street, Redbridge Council should actively encourage diverse local retailers to come here so that we keep a broad spread of shops. I love a cappuccino but… the Sunday markets could be developed to be more extensive and put Wanstead on the map.

We all want more hipsters walking our streets!

Evergreen Field? Come on guys, just take the fences down, there is no other solution.

Housing? Even in Redbridge, there are loads of sites we can use for housing before taking an inch of Green Belt, and the council should lead developers to where these are.

And it goes without saying that I am 100% behind continuing weekly rubbish collections and extending easy recycling opportunities.

Wanstead Village 2018 Scott Wilding is a Conservative Party candidate for the new Wanstead Village ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why he thinks he deserves your vote on 3 May

T

he work of a councillor is to deal with local issues that make a difference to the everyday. Cleanliness, waste collection, parking or planning issues, for example. The job isn’t to influence foreign policy or decide if we should spend more or less on major national issues like the NHS or defence. That’s what MPs are for.

Redbridge had a total budget of £180m in 2016–2017 and it’s the job of local councillors to decide how best to spend this money. With that in mind, let me explain why I am asking for your vote on 3 May. Since 2009, I’ve been the chair of the Wanstead Society, which is the only local charity dedicated to protecting and enhancing the whole of Wanstead. I have seen first-hand the great community spirit here in Wanstead when I helped organise community clean-up days on Nightingale Green or took part in the bimonthly litter picks. Since 2014, I have also been a trustee of the Wanstead Playground Association, which raised £100,000 for the children’s play area on Christchurch Green.

Something we had to do, because Labourrun Redbridge Council refused to pay for its renovation. Over the years, I have also been involved with the Friends of Christ Church, organised community street parties and am a keen community gardener. So for me, becoming a councillor is an extension of the community work I have been doing for almost a decade. And this is what local councillors should be doing – in their community, working for their community. No matter which party you affiliate with, ask each candidate what they have done for their community.

I also spent 12 years working for Redbridge Council and with the exception of some seasoned councillors, there are few people

with the experience to understand how the council operates before being elected. It’s important to hit the ground running, and it’s important to know how to influence the workings of the council, which I can.

I grew up in Wanstead, was christened in Christ Church, attended Wanstead Church School and Wanstead High. My godkids do the same. Wanstead has been my home for 35 years, and when you care passionately about the place where you, your family and friends live and grew up, you want to make a difference for the better. Living in a community for over three decades doesn’t mean you know everything, but it helps to understand the area and its issues – and how to offer workable solutions.

If elected in May, I and my Conservative ward colleagues will fight for the best deal for Wanstead. We want a better public realm, a thriving High Street and a cleaner, greener borough. Wanstead Park 2018 Paul Merry is a Labour Party candidate for the new Wanstead Park ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why he thinks he deserves your vote on 3 May

I

have been a Labour councillor for Wanstead ward for the past four years, first being elected in 2014, when Labour gained a majority on Redbridge Council for the first time. I am now standing again in the newly formed Wanstead Park ward.

For the past four years, Wanstead and Redbridge as a whole have been on the receiving end of the Conservative government’s unique brand of aggressive austerity, with Redbridge’s central government funding cut by 40%. This has meant transforming a Tory-run authority into an organisation fit for the 21st century in terms of service delivery while coping with a massive reduction in funding. This has not been an easy task. However, the Labour council has worked hard to protect front-line services and the most vulnerable residents. I am proud to have played my part in this and the transformation of methods of service delivery, particularly through the use of new technology and better coordination.

I am a seasoned campaigner, having campaigned against, amongst other causes, the closure of Wanstead Hospital intermediate care wards, the closure of Wanstead Police Station and cuts to policing across London. I have also worked very closely with the Friends of Wanstead Parklands in lobbying the City of London and other funders to invest resources in the Epping Forest lands that make our area so green and special.

Dealing with the parking challenges created by neighbouring boroughs, parking zones and the arrival of Crossrail has been a challenge that will hopefully benefit all residents over the coming years. I am also proud to have been part of the campaign that secured

funding for the Newham to Hainault cycle quietway. The quietway runs through Aldersbrook and across the North Circular to Valentines Park, Ilford and northwards.

I have persistently defended social housing and social services. The lack of government funding has forced councils to rethink how they fund these services to minimise damage to vital services. This is a deeply worrying situation, particularly as we have an increasingly elderly population. As a socialist, trade unionist and local government worker for 34 years, I want to see properly funded public services. I spend much of my casework time dealing with people who rely on important council services that are being continuously cut by the government.

It has been a huge honour and very enjoyable to have been a Wanstead councillor for the past four years. I have held advice surgeries twice a month on the High Street and in Aldersbrook in addition to attending many street surgeries and street stalls to hear concerns and deal with local problems.

Wanstead Park 2018 Pat Bennett is a Conservative Party candidate for the new Wanstead Park ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why he thinks he deserves your vote on 3 May

I

have been part of the Aldersbrook community of Wanstead Park for over a decade. Having recently retired from the postal service, I am keen to ‘give back’ to this wonderful community.

In Wanstead Park, we have a lovely environment with plenty of green spaces. We need to preserve these areas, not just for now but for future generations. I am a member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and I am actively involved in trying to protect their habitat, especially on Wanstead Flats.

I take a keen interest in the issues that affect my community and I was involved in the petition to bring back the free garden waste collection service the council charged for in 2017. We managed to get the council to do a U-turn on this by demonstrating the support for reinstating the service back to how it was.

I would like to serve as a councillor for Wanstead Park to represent everyone and to provide an experienced voice on the council.

I want to ensure everyone is consulted and not dictated to by the council. Consultations should be a two-way process, where all parties engage. This has not been the case with the recent parking consultation in Aldersbrook.

Consultations should not be a rubberstamping exercise to raise money from residents or to impose new regulations on an area where they have not been properly scrutinised. This can and has led to poor decision-making and serious unintended consequences, not least, in the case of parking, the displacement of cars to smaller and smaller areas. The new scheme also threatens the viability of our cherished High Street. Decisions arising from the consultation should be based on everyone consulted with

the majority decision being carried. This has not happened.

In recent years, I have seen a significant decline in our municipal services, such as street cleaning – a recent survey mentioned that over half of our residents think the council is doing a poor job of keeping the streets clean. There has been more antisocial behaviour, including street drinking, aggressive begging and the dumping of household and green waste in prohibited areas. These issues need to be tackled immediately. If elected, I will pursue this stealth tax on parking permits without proper consultation. I will work to ensure the free garden green waste scheme is kept permanently, not just brought back for election year! I will also work with my colleagues to slash the £5m temporary manager and ‘interim consultant’ bill.

pril is the big changeover month in the world of birds. We lose many of those that have spent the winter with us and welcome large numbers of others, freshly arrived from winter quarters in the tropics. But have you ever wondered where these summer visitors have come from and where their journeys will end?

Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) Origin: Mali, Ghana, Senegal and Niger Destination: northern England With its grey upperparts and peachy breast, this is a very smart grassland bird.

If disturbed, it will fly low to the ground, but a quick flash of the white rump always gives away its identity. Every year, some stop over on Wanstead Flats on their long journey from the Sahel region of Africa.

Wheatears don’t breed locally but are on their way to moors and other grassland in East Anglia, the north of England or Scotland. A few still have a very long way to go, ending up in Greenland.

Garganey (Anas querquedula) Origin: Senegal and The Gambia Destination: East Anglia This is one of our smallest ducks.

While females look like female teal, the males have a chocolate-brown head and breast with a bold white streak running from just in front of the eye to the back of the neck. This dabbling duck does not breed locally but a few pass through London each spring, so it’s worth checking the lakes in Wanstead Park. They breed in shallow lakes with emergent vegetation after spending the winter in African wetlands.

Sand martin (Riparia riparia) Origin: Ghana, Mali and Ivory Coast Destination: local Sand martins have an advantage over many other migrants – they feed on flying insects, so they don’t have to break their journeys to eat. These small, brownish birds nest in holes in river banks, cliffs and sand quarries, and there are a few pairs on the Lea in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and on the Roding near Barking.

The best place to look very close to home is over the lakes in Wanstead Park, where they may pursue flies and midges with house martins and swallows.

©D avid Lesser whitethroat V Ra ju (Sylvia curruca) Origin: Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia Destination: local You are more likely to hear the rattling song of a male lesser whitethroat than you are to see the bird. These warblers are nondescript but are unusual migrants in that they arrive from the south-east rather than the south. It is known that our birds pass through the Middle East to reach us but it is not known exactly where they spend the winter. Several pairs of lesser whitethroats breed on Wanstead Flats.

Ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus) Origin: Morocco and Tunisia Destination: Scotland Amazingly, one or two ‘mountain blackbirds’ regularly stop off on Wanstead Flats in spring. The males are striking birds, mainly blackish but with a white crescent on the breast. They are known to have regular stop-over locations, but these are generally on hilltops, so why they favour the Flats is anyone’s guess. They don’t stick with us for long and they’re very skittish, so a slice of luck is needed to see one.

Singing StorieS

Julie McKee is – according to Jazz Views – a ‘unique songstress and storyteller who has all the bravura of Kate Bush’. She is also an Aldersbrook resident and will be performing at The Larder this month

I started gigging as a singer when I moved to London after my degree. I tapped into a whole network of musicians on the London jazz scene through going to jam sessions and open mics and it took on a new momentum.

So, I decided to apply for the Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s Jazz Performance MMus, where I met loads of amazing musicians – it was a turning point.

After a few years of doing jazz standard gigs, I started writing my own material. I’ve always loved the story aspect of songs – words really interest me, as well as ideas. So, for my first album of original material, What A Woman Shouldn’t Do (2008), I took inspiration from anything from news stories to reality TV shows and city life. It was also more pop-infused.

My second album, Light on the Ledge (2014), developed the story theme a bit more, with songs inspired by fables, dissolute politicians and star-crossed dreamers. I recorded it with a string quartet, and a career highlight was playing the launch gig in the newly refurbished Grand Entrance Hall at the Brunel

I

’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, to the point that my eldest sister used to say: “She’s got too big a voice for such a little girl!” I sang a lot around the house, then when I learnt to play the piano, I accompanied myself too. My dad gave me a few jazz and blues piano books and I was hooked. I also had a bunch of sheet music from musicals by the Gershwins, Cole Porter and Harold Arlen – all that classic American Songbook material, which I didn’t realise at the time were jazz standards, I just liked the songs. Then I listened to artists like Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald and realised they were all part of a certain repertoire.

I’ve been fortunate to play in lots of different settings with some of the UK’s top jazz musicians in venues across the UK and in the States. The main thread has been a love of swing, blues, stories, lyrics and a good melody.

I moved to Aldersbrook a few years ago when my second child was a baby. It didn’t take long to become established with lots of friends as it’s a small neighbourhood and everyone helps each other. We like that it’s so green and calm but also still part of the city.

It’ll be great to play on my home turf at The Larder. I’ll be accompanied by a brilliant pianist, Naadia Sheriff, who also studied at Guildhall and now gigs across the world. We’ll do an eclectic set taking in my love of jazz standards, plus blues, soul and a few originals.

d i s g us t o l o g y Paul Kaufman, chair of the East London Humanists, explains the concept of disgustology, a new area of research which explores the pivotal role of revulsion in the evolution of human morality

D

isgustology has been coined to describe what is a relatively new area of research. The study of revulsion, a uniquely human emotion, raises important questions about how we make moral decisions. Thought-provoking results from various experiments about our ‘disgust’ response have recently featured in the press. One example involved asking participants about cleaning their bathroom with a cloth bearing the national flag.

Conservatives are more likely to say this is wrong and disrespectful; left-leaning liberals are less likely to be concerned about the ‘sanctity’ of a piece of cloth.

As an evolutionary psychologist, Dr Diana Fleischmann explores the evolution of the human mind in much the same way as an evolutionary biologist explores the evolution of the human body. She argues that the role played by the disgust emotion is unique.

It was an adaptation humans developed in response to the threat of disease, for example, to avoid eating meat crawling with maggots. She believes this adaptation, originally developed for self-preservation, now influences our moral judgements in ways which are not always rational.

A feeling of repugnance is often treated as sufficient evidence that the behaviour that causes this reaction is wrong. This avoids dealing with a possible lack of rational argument against the offending behaviour.

One of many examples is the response to other people’s sexual practices. Another is stem cell research. Dr Fleischmann quotes from a religious conservative and adviser to George Bush, who opposed this valuable scientific development, with the words: “Shallow are the souls who have forgotten how to shudder.”

The trolley problem: would you sacrifice one life to save five lives?

Dr Fleischmann views the ‘misfiring’ of disgust as a potential weakness, or bias, in our evolved morality, and one we should be mindful of.

It helps to explain why humans often make decisions which are rationally less ethical to avoid committing an act that causes them moral disgust. This is illustrated by classic dilemmas such as the so-called ‘trolley problem.’ In this thought experiment, a runaway trolley is about to run over five people tied to the railway tracks. Many people would not wish to pull a lever diverting the trolley to a parallel track on which one person is tied up.

Their disgust at being responsible for taking one life outweighs the logical decision, which would save five lives.

Dr Fleischmann doesn’t provide any easy answers. However, the questions she raises are fascinating. At our meeting this month, we will show a film of The Darwin Day Lecture 2018, given by Dr Fleischmann and chaired by Jim Al-Khalili, scientist, broadcaster and vicechair of Humanists UK. There will be plenty of time for questions, answers and discussion afterwards.

East meets East

M

y work as the Chief Political Photographer at the Press Association has taken me to every corner of the world with four successive prime ministers, so alongside the hectic schedules and highly stagemanaged political engagements, I have always tried to escape the ‘bubble’ and photograph local daily life in between the endless press conferences and photo ops.

Among the many places I’ve travelled to, the colour and diversity of Japan and India have always caught my imagination, and so I’ve chosen 50 of my favourite photographs shot during recent visits to be the subject of a month-long exhibition at Geoff Wilkinson’s Eightyfour Gallery on Nightingale Lane. I find the people from both cultures are friendly, polite and welcoming yet incredibly different in so many ways and I’ve tried to reflect this in the exhibition.

The pictures, taken over several years, are candid street scenes of everyday life in two very contrasting countries, one being a huge, developing and eclectic nation, the other, possibly the most advanced and civilised country in the world. The East meets East exhibition displays a small comparative example of these cultures.

As I mark my 30th year as a press photographer, travel photography has allowed me to renew my enthusiasm for photojournalism.

Where s the will? ’

Do you know where your will is stored? More importantly, do your beneficiaries know? Natasha Narad, trainee solicitor at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, explains the importance of the National Will Register

M

any of us may have had a will prepared, or at least know that our parents have done so. However, how many of us can confidently say that our beneficiaries and executors are aware not only of the existence of the will but where the original is located?

In some countries, it is compulsory to register a will but this is not the case in the UK. Certainty, the National Will Register, which is the largest register of wills in the UK, has created a national database to enable solicitors and individuals to register wills they have made. If there is any doubt as to whether a person who died had made a will, or a more recent will than the one which has been located, the Certainty register can be searched. If a match is found, the law firm or individual holding the original will can be contacted.

Certainty only stores basic details, as it simply records the existence and location of a will.

The contents of the will are not registered, and so data protection rules are not infringed.

The principal advantage of registration is in giving executors the best chance of the will being admitted to probate so that the intentions of the person who made the will, the testator, are more likely to be followed, and a person who went to the effort of making a will would not be deemed to have died intestate (without a will) because it has not been discovered.

Consider this scenario: someone made a will in 2015 leaving their entire estate to a friend who helped care for them but did not tell anyone about it. They had not been in contact with any family members for a number of years. On their death in 2018, the will was not discovered

amongst their possessions. If the will had not been registered, it is quite possible that the friend would never benefit. If the executors do not find the will, the estate would be distributed according to the rules of intestacy.

Only spouses and blood relatives can benefit under intestacy and the distribution of the estate would be determined by statute. In the absence of any family members entitled to benefit, the estate passes to the Crown as bona vacantia (ownerless property).

Whether family members are found or not, the distribution of the estate under intestacy rules may be contrary to the wishes of the testator.

Who can benefit from having implants?

– Almost anyone with one or more teeth missing.

What difference do implants make?

– Implants can make a noticeable difference to a person’s confidence and self-esteem, but there are additional benefits. Take my father. Before he had implants, he would choose only soft foods that were easier to eat with his dentures, rather than what he liked. After the implants he was able to eat anything, and was happier to eat out more.

Not only was he able to chew his food properly, which improved his general well-being; he also looked better, and younger.

Why are implants better than other solutions?

A

t one of the first meetings of the Woodford Photographic Society on 19 October 1893 (the Wanstead associations followed in later years), club president H Wilmer expressed the need for individual work and the hope that by cooperation and hard work, the club might take “an honoured place amongst the foremost societies”.

In the early years, a good practical programme was arranged with the burden of instruction, demonstration and general guidance falling upon the shoulders of the founders. At one of the early meetings, Edward Caird read a paper on Some modern printing processes, reviewing the gelatin chloride, gelatin bromide, carbon and platino processes. Another paper was read on Copying and there was a lecture on Artistic aspects of photography. There were also discussions on toning and exposure, darkrooms, the advantages of backed plates and how to correct converging verticals. Members gave practical demonstrations on platinotype printing, preserving solutions from oxidisation, carbon printing and mending and binding lantern slides. Membership had risen to 20 and the club arranged its first exhibition, held at the Coffee Tavern adjoining George Lane railway station.

The club decided to become affiliated to the Royal Photographic Society from January 1895, and, in October, The Woodford Times published a report of the society’s success at the annual exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society.

Woodford had 12 prints and 12 sets of lantern slides accepted and Ernest Marriage was awarded a medal for his work.

In January 1895, F Elliott spoke on beginners’ difficulties and suggested that too many papers were read on the technical side of photography and not enough on the artistic side. Experienced members were asked to provide samples of their work with details of exposure, development and toning, to set a standard of guidance for beginners.

In the second of a series of articles celebrating the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society’s 125th anniversary year, club member Alan Simpson offers some insight into the group’s history, which in turn provides a pictorial record of our changing surroundings

and the society moved to the Wilfrid Lawson Temperance Hotel, near The Castle public house in Woodford. The hotel was demolished in 1973 and a block of flats built on the site.

During these early years, the leading members of the club bore the main responsibility of instructing and advising the younger members. For example, in January 1908, Mr Goodwin demonstrated the development of a colour slide. He first exposed a plate on a watercolour drawing for about 23 minutes, illuminated by the oxyhydrogen light from the

In September 1899, Alfred Horsley Hinton, editor of Amateur Photographer magazine, became a member. He was chairman from 1902–1903, and Amateur Photographer reported the eighth annual exhibition of the society in 1902, saying: “There are probably few… societies which, in proportion to its numbers, includes amongst its members so many who have made a name for themselves in some particular branch of photography.”

In the 10th of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of the Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to Matthew Scott and Christine Zerafa, who will perform at Wanstead Library this month

T

his month, Redbridge Music Society continues its programme of bringing high-quality musical events to the borough with a recital given by Matthew Scott (clarinet) and Christine Zerafa (piano).

They will perform a wide range of works, including those by Beethoven (Spring Sonata), Debussy, Martinu and BizetSarasate (Carmen Fantasy).

Young British clarinettist Matthew Scott regularly gives solo and chamber recitals throughout the UK and has performed at many major London venues, such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wigmore Hall.

He and his award-winning wind quintet Ensemble Mirage were selected as St John’s Smith Square Young Artists last year and have performed at many UK venues. Matthew was also recently selected as a Park Lane Group Young Artist together with his duo partner Christine Zerafa, who will be collaborating with him this month.

Matthew graduated with first-class honours from the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in 2013, followed by an MA with Distinction and a DipRAM in 2015. Throughout his studies, he was generously supported by The Countess of Munster Musical Trust and The Greenbank Scholarship. Matthew has held principal positions in many RAM orchestras and ensembles, performing on the whole range of clarinets (B flat to basset horn), and has also appeared on two acclaimed CDs. Matthew was recently selected as part of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s new initiative, the Change Makers Ensemble, which is led by disabled musicians. He firmly believes that any form of disability need not be a barrier to a successful career in music and he is currently working to promote awareness of

high-functioning autism in the music industry, particularly in the orchestral sector.

Maltese pianist Christine Zerafa is based in London and has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician in many venues in her home country, the USA and across the UK. She has performed live on BBC Radio 3 and has received many awards, including the Schumann Lieder accompanist prize.

She holds Master of Music degrees in solo performance and piano accompaniment and is currently undertaking a PhD in performance at RAM, focusing on her role as a collaborative pianist. Christine has been supported by the Malta Arts Scholarship and the BOV Joseph Calleja and Janatha Stubbs Foundations; she has a Silverstone Bursary and a Gilling Family Scholarship.

Redbridge Music Society is supported by Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure and is affiliated to Making Music.

Key-free, carefree Keyless car entry theft is on the rise as more criminals are using devices to perform ‘relay’ car hacks. PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhoods Team offers advice on how to keep your car safe

C

riminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods to steal from and take vehicles that use keyless entry systems. All makes and models that use this technology have been targeted.

Organised criminals are able to steal some vehicles in less than 30 seconds using specialised equipment to programme blank keys or intercept signals given off by key cards.

They do not need to steal your keys through burglary or theft for your car to be missing in the morning.

To reduce the chances of becoming a victim of keyless vehicle theft, please consider additional security like car alarms and steering wheel or gearstick locks. You can also get property marking kits for your car.

Consider having an on-board diagnostics (OBD) lock professionally fitted to the OBD port or a tracking device. Additional locks increase the time the criminals have to be by your car and therefore increase the risk of being seen.

If a criminal suspects a car has a tracker, they will park up for a couple of days before returning later. If you see an unusual vehicle randomly appear and then go again, this might be the reason. Neighbourhood watch groups are very good at identifying cars that are out of place.

Marking kits and glass etching help identify parts taken from cars and make it harder for a criminal to sell them on. Tamper-proof screws will help prevent number plates being taken off and used in other crimes.

Leaving items on display inside your car will draw attention to your vehicle, so don’t leave valuables – such as satnavs, designer

sunglasses and cash – in your car overnight, even in the glove box.

Keep your car keys out of sight of the front door of your house and consider buying a Faraday bag to help prevent signals from being intercepted. Taking the keys upstairs could still mean they are close enough to your car to open it. Try to experiment yourself.

Double-check your vehicle is locked before leaving it. Criminals do walk around at night trying car doors.

Where possible, park your vehicle in your garage, but if using a driveway, gate and locking posts are very good additional security measures that reduce the risk of the car being taken. Lighting and CCTV are also good preventions, although they should be in addition to other security methods, owing to the speed of such crimes.
