Four days before this issue was sent to print, London suffered a terrorist attack. It would be wrong not to take this opportunity to pay my respects to those who lost their lives and those injured in the atrocity. It would be wrong not to take this opportunity to thank those who work to keep us safe. And it would be wrong to allow this depraved act to change who we are and what we do. So, here follows my usual rambling address. Business as usual.

Birds have a certain poetic and majestic symbolism that is largely unrivalled in the animal kingdom. The freedom of flight is a universal concept, with the apparent ease of aviation something humans have long aspired to. Who hasn’t marvelled at the aerial acrobatics of murmurating starlings, migrating swallows or hovering kestrels? What child hasn’t imagined soaring through the clouds? Wouldn’t we all like to be free as a bird? John Lennon certainly knew it was the next best thing to be.

As a variety of migrating avian species make their way to our shores – heading to and through Wanstead and Aldersbrook – the freedom of movement enjoyed by our feathered friends is only too clear. It’s a freedom that, given our current political narrative, highlights the somewhat arbitrary nature by which we define our own borders and boundaries. Yet those boundaries are inherently important to us as a species. They define our identities, locally and internationally. We take pride in our immediate surroundings. The very concept of a local community implies a boundary of some description. We talk of a love for the country in which we were randomly born or selectively chose to settle. In short, we have our own way of life and so do the birds, and we live side by side.

The swallows will continue to migrate.

London will continue to thrive.

Consultation on changes to Wanstead’s parking regulations now open A six-week consultation on the proposed changes to parking regulations in Wanstead is now underway. “We’ve worked hard to build a consultation that takes influence from best practice from across the country. Now we want to hear from you.

Streets Commission

Local resident Dan Slipper – who organised last month's spring clean in Wanstead – has started a new community Facebook group.

"The Wanstead Community Forum is a space for people to discuss local issues and explore ways we can work together to improve the neighbourhood," said Dan, who will be running the London Marathon this month to raise funds for a school in The Gambia. Visit wavidi.co/wcf

A number of focus groups were held across Redbridge last month – including at Wanstead Library – as part of a new initiative that gives residents and businesses a chance to share their ideas on how everyone in the borough can work together to make local public spaces safer, cleaner and as communitycentred as possible.

Watercolour demonstration by former firefighter

Following a meeting at Snaresbrook Station last month, 12 enthusiastic gardeners have formed a new work group to maintain and improve the garden patch behind Platform Two. "We now have a steering group, an email network and address and hopefully soon, somewhere to store tools," said Marian Temple of the Wanstead Community Gardeners.

Firefighter-turned-artist James Merriott will be giving a demonstration of painting seascapes using watercolours at Wanstead House this month. "James [whose career in the London Fire Brigade was cut short with the onset of arthritis in 1971] usually paints on location and believes the success of his work lies in his speed of application, which gives a simplicity and spontaneity to his paintings," said a spokesperson for the Essex Art Club, which will be hosting the event on 23 April from 2.30pm (visitors: £5). Wanstead and Snaresbrook Underground Station car parks have been put forward as potential sites for housing development. The proposals – 44 new homes at Snaresbrook and 18 at Wanstead – are part of recent modifications to the Redbridge Local Plan, which was submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for independent examination last month. The proposed development includes retention of some commuter parking at each station and will be subject to a future planning application and public consultation.

Fortnightly paid-for garden waste collection service begins

Redbridge Council's new paid-for garden waste collection service begins this month at a cost of £50 per year. Those who subscribe will receive 50 biodegradable sacks, which will be collected fortnightly between April and October. "We didn’t want to scrap the service because we know residents value it, so we’ve made it a payable service to run during the times of the year when there is the greatest need," said Councillor John Howard, Cabinet Member for Environment. Artists Erica Johns – a former TV and stage actor – and Pat Pratley are two long-term Wanstead residents who will be displaying their work at an Essex Art Club exhibition at the Epping Forest visitor centre in Chingford this month. "Erica works with a variety of mediums, including oils and watercolours and Pat mainly paints landscapes, but often takes on portrait commissions," said a group spokesperson. Wanstead Library will be temporarily closed for refurbishment from 14 April. “This will enable us to replace the floor and to make improvements to library furniture and shelving,” said a spokesperson. The adjoining library hall, which is regularly used for meetings, talks and events, and the library foyer, which is currently displaying the proposed changes to Wanstead’s parking regulations, will be unaffected by the work.

Marian Temple, who has been tending to public gardens for over 10 years, will be hosting a coffee morning at Wanstead Library this month.

The free event will take place from 10.30am on 20 April (booking required) and will include a discussion of her first project at the Corner House garden.

The Wanstead Community Gardeners were subsequently founded in 2014 and now look after 20 patches of public soil.

Lakes, history and bluebells on spring walk through Wanstead Park

Volunteers needed to support Nutter Lane community allotment site

Wanstead Park is considered to be one of the best springtime places to see native UK bluebells in the London and Essex areas

On 23 April members of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands will lead a free walk around Wanstead Park. "The main purpose of this event will be to explain the history and construction of the lake system in the park, which dates in its present form from the 18th century," said walk leader Richard Arnopp.

The two-mile stroll will take a detour through Chalet Wood, where the park’s annual display of bluebells should be approaching its best.

A specialist in military medals will be giving a presentation about the history of the Victoria Cross to members of the Wanstead Park Women’s Club this month. "My talk will explain the origins of the nation’s highest award for bravery, explore some of the myths associated with the Victoria Cross and recount some of the exploits of those who have won it," said Mark Smith, a regular expert on The Antiques Roadshow. Migrants on the move Ahead of a guided walk in search of migrant birds on Wanstead Flats this month, Wren Wildlife Group member Tim Harris highlights a few species he hopes to see

pring bird migration is reaching a peak in mid-April. Many migrants fly by night, so the first inkling of their arrival may be when we hear them singing the following morning. Others, such as swallows, swifts and some birds of prey, are diurnal travellers, so keen eyes may spot them as they pass overhead.

For some migrants, this is the end of the road: they will remain here and, hopefully, breed. Others use Wanstead as a service station on their aerial motorway to breeding grounds in Scotland or Scandinavia.

Red kite (Milvus milvus) A relatively recent addition to the list of birds likely to be seen over our area, this spectacular bird of prey has benefitted from reintroduction schemes in the Midlands.

Some young birds wander in the winter and in spring are making their way back to breeding grounds.

Watch out for the long, angled wings and the forked tail as they drift high overhead.

Ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus) Every spring, one or two of these “mountain blackbirds” drops in on Wanstead Flats. They are very shy birds, rarely sticking around for more than a day because they are in transit to moorland in the Pennines and Scotland. With the white crescent on the breast contrasting with the black plumage, the males are particularly striking.

Common whitethroat (Sylvia communis) Like the blackcap, this is a warbler, but that’s where the similarities end. Whitethroats have a scratchy song, are denizens of scrubby brambles and broom rather than mature trees, and come from much further afield in subSaharan Africa. Several pairs arrive on Wanstead Flats to breed in April.

Swallow (Hirundo rustica) The most graceful of fliers, swallows spend much of their time on the wing in pursuit of flying insects. They often fly very low over the football pitches of the Flats and may linger a while to hoover up insects over Alexandra Lake, delivering gentle chirrups as they do so. Swallows breed fairly close to us, but not actually in our area. They spend the winter in southern Africa.

Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) With its peachy breast, bluish-grey back and white rump, a male wheatear in fresh spring plumage is a wonderful sight. And luckily for us, Wanstead Flats is one of the best places in London to see them in April. This is usually the first migrant to appear – in March – and birds continue to stop off on their way north into early May.

Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) This is one of the commonest of the spring arrivals in our area, breeding in trees in gardens, as well as in Wanstead Park and on Wanstead Flats. These are medium-distance migrants, arriving from the Med and North Africa. Only the males have a black cap; the female’s cap is brown.

20/20 Wanstead vision This year, the Wanstead Society celebrates its 20th anniversary. In the fourth of a series of articles, Chairman Scott Wilding considers whether Wanstead really is a village, or if it’s just a marketing ploy

W

ith the redrawing of local council ward boundaries, what most people consider to be the centre of Wanstead – its High Street – will be renamed, at least politically, as Wanstead Village ward. So, are we really a village?

As someone who was lucky enough to grow up in Wanstead, go to its local primary and high schools and has lived here for 30 years, I know Wanstead isn’t a conventional village.

In reality, it’s a suburb of London. But it does have a village feel to it, which is a result of the people who live here, as opposed to being a small community in the countryside.

Wanstead has gone through many changes over the last 100 years. The centre of the village used to be Nightingale Green, not the High Street, and even up to the 1960s, Wanstead was part of Essex, not London. But with the coming of the railways and suburbanisation of villages like Wanstead, it has a distinctly urban look – but not necessarily an urban feel.

The UN estimates that 80% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep the positive elements of community that are associated with villages rather than cities.

When the local children’s playground needed renovation that the council wouldn’t pay for, the community stepped in and raised the funds required. At the start of March, the Wanstead Society and local residents took part in a mass litter pick, so tired were we of the rubbish that people throw on the floor.

We also take part in regular ’Tidy Tarzy Wood’ days, plant bulbs and maintain flower beds in the High Street. Each year in Wanstead there are at least a few street parties to bring neighbours together. And all that doesn’t fit

with a conventional city mindset. So perhaps Wanstead has a village mentality set in an urban context. Sure, marketing Wanstead as a village is the same as saying Hampstead or Walthamstow has a village. They too are suburban parts of London. But they also have local societies like ours that seek to protect and promote their areas. They too are places families want to live, socialise and work in.

There are similarities between them.

So, to those who think Wanstead isn’t a village and that it’s all a rebranding exercise to push up your house price, think of it this way: we are not a village by name, but a village by nature. Maybe that is why house prices go up; people want to live here not just because of the good schools, transport links, shops, green spaces and so on, but because of you and the community of which you are a part. However, it’s only as good as we make it, so let’s look after it together.

The Flytipper Ever fly-tipped? Ever thought about fly-tipping? Well, now your days are numbered if you do. Meet The Flytipper, the monstrous creation of award-winning filmmaker and Wanstead resident Marc Coleman

’m a filmmaker and actor living in Wanstead. I have been working across various platforms in the arts for over 10 years. I started a career in comedy 12 years ago and progressed from there.

I’m currently in pre-production for a short film I’m making called The Flytipper. It’s a short comedy horror film about a bloodthirsty monster made of fly-tipped rubbish that takes revenge on some naive builders who think illegally dumping waste is a good idea. Oscarworthy, right?

Five years ago I moved into filmmaking and started a small production company called Doggedfilms. Last year, I won an Empire Award for a short film I made with no money.

The film was chosen by a panel of industry experts, had a spread in the July issue of Empire magazine and led to me heading out to LA for an awards evening at Paramount Studios. My mum was over the moon.

I came up with the idea of The Flytipper after walking around our local borough and seeing the waste that gets left on the side of the road, in woodland areas and down our backstreets.

I always wanted to make a monster movie from a young age, but I didn’t know what my monster was going to be. I was inspired by films like Alien, Predator, The Toxic Avenger, Tremors and The Evil Dead. So many cool and unique creatures. But how could I make a monster different from the rest? It seemed after taking a walk around Hollow Ponds that I finally had my monster. Funny how inspiration hits sometimes.

stomach to spin to death and suction tubes to pull out eyes. Standing over nine feet tall, the monster is scary, absurd and built to kill. As the film is a homage to those movies I grew up with, the monster will be a practical, life-size puppet manned by two people. No computergenerated imagery will be used in the film.

We are currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo.

We are looking to raise £4,500 to make the film, which will move into principal photography at the end of April. We are asking for backers to donate. All donations will go towards the costs of making the film (equipment, practical effects and transport).

Opening up the gates Wanstead resident Teresa Farnham is the local area organiser for the National Garden Scheme, which encourages people across the country to open their gardens to the public for charity

A

bout 16 years ago, I was approached by the local assistant organiser for the National Garden Scheme (NGS) who asked me if I would like to open my garden to the public. I had worked as a professional gardener and teacher for 12 years and knew about the scheme through visiting other open gardens. Since 1927, the NGS has been operational in opening gardens and was assisted by the active support of the King, who opened the gardens of Sandringham.

I had always loved gardening and was delighted to be able to share my patch with new people. However, nothing prepared me for our open day when we had the heaviest rainfall of the year! I lived in a terrace house – with a 120-foot garden and a white-tiled hall floor – and, to my astonishment, over 100 visitors walked through the house and looked around the garden, sheltering under umbrellas. The next year (two days before the opening), I awoke to see the very large pond (sited in a former air raid shelter) had sprung a leak. I was frantically borrowing buckets to save the fish left gasping at the bottom before we could repair the leak in the butyl liner.

Several years later, when the assistant area organiser moved away, I was asked to take her place. Since then it has been an absolute pleasure to meet so many generous people and see their gardens – all different and looked after by some fascinating individuals.

The criteria are that the gardens should be well maintained and of interest to visitors, who sometimes travel for several hours.

All the money raised is for the charities supported by the NGS (Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Carers Trust, Queen’s Nursing Institute, Perennial, Horatio’s

Garden, Parkinson’s UK and the MS Society).

My job as a volunteer is to help with providing support to the owners who are kind enough to open up their gardens and provide tea and cakes.

Last year, £3.6 million was raised purely through the opening of private gardens to the general public, of which £190,000 came from London gardens, such as the 10 open this year in our area, which covers Wanstead, Woodford, Leytonstone, Forest Gate, Chingford, Barkingside and Romford. This year’s open gardens range from the beautiful gardens of Hurst House in Woodford Green (open on 1 May; £5) to a town garden with an amazing mini agricultural museum in Pettits Boulevard, Romford (open 24 and 25 June; £3.50).

Please, please, please consider opening your garden for the NGS. I will gladly visit and advise you. It is a lot of fun and a great way to contribute to charity.

I

have only been collecting Wansteadrelated material seriously for a couple of years. The inspiration originally came from a member of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands, Richard Joynson, who regularly posted links on our Facebook page to items coming up for sale on eBay. I was very taken by the variety and interest, not to mention research value, of what I was seeing, and started buying them.

As well as postcards, I also have some original photographs, engravings, artworks and other items.

The largest single category in my collection comes from the so-called "golden age" of British postcards (1902–1914), when there was a craze for cards with photographic images.

I am still actively collecting and will add to my online archive as the collection grows. Very recently, two job lots of cards came up for sale – 20 items in total, and all of them new to me.

But I think it will be a good while yet before I can sit back and say I’m finished!

I have now uploaded these images to eHive, an online resource used by museums, societies and private collectors worldwide to catalogue and publish their collections.

The postcard craze was sparked in 1902, when the Post Office allowed both the address and message to be written on one side of the card, freeing up the whole of the other side for the picture. Britain thus became the first country to introduce the ’divided back’ postcard format we are familiar with today.

By this time, too, the size of cards had been largely standardised. Vast numbers of different designs were produced, many of them now very rare.

My main focus is on the evolution of Wanstead Park’s unique landscape, but many images shed light on social history, showing recreational activities, such as boating and tennis, and changes in costume and manners.

My ultimate intention is to donate my collection to a public archive where it will be available to researchers. In the meantime, I would be glad to hear from any local readers who have items they would like to sell or donate. No donated items will be resold unless they are duplicates, and any proceeds will only be used to augment the collection.

Paul Wershof of local solicitors Wiseman Lee explains the recent changes to the amount of compensation insurance companies must pay to those who have suffered life-changing injuries

T

he government’s announcement on 27 February that it will cut the Discount Rate – a calculation used to determine lump sum compensation to claimants who have suffered lifechanging injuries – from 2.5% to minus 0.75% was met with predictable outrage by insurance companies. The Director General of the Association of British Insurers called it a “crazy decision” by Liz Truss, the Lord Chancellor, and significant sums were wiped off the value of major insurers who predict a fall in profits as a result.

But before readers start to weep into their cornflakes at the fate of our insurance industry, rest assured that the cost will be passed to consumers in the form of increased premiums over the next few years.

So, why has the government done this? The Discount Rate, also known as the Ogden Rate, is a calculation used by the courts to determine how much insurance companies should pay out to customers in cases of lifechanging injury and any case where future losses, such as care costs or loss of earnings, are claimed.

The rate had not changed since 2001 and is roughly calculated as follows: prior to the rate change, if you received an award for future losses of £1,000 as the result of a claim, the insurance company would pay you £975. This was because it was assumed you would invest the £975 and receive interest of around 2.5%.

The Discount Rate is linked by law to returns on the lowest risk investments, typically IndexLinked Government bonds, the yield on which has fallen dramatically since 2001. Under the new rate (effective from 20 March 2017), the insurance company must pay £1,007.50 in compensation.

The difference between £975 and £1,007.50 is insubstantial, but when applied to cases of catastrophic injury or birth defects as a result of negligence, where future losses may amount to millions of pounds, the change in the Discount Rate becomes highly significant and will help to ensure that clients who have suffered life-changing injuries will be properly compensated as a result.

A statement from the Ministry of Justice said: "The law makes clear that claimants must be treated as risk-averse investors, reflecting the fact that they are financially dependent on this lump sum, often for long periods or the duration of their life. Compensation awards using the rate should put the claimant in the same financial position had they not been injured, including loss of future earnings and care costs."

The reality is that the vast majority of claims will not be affected by this rate change. The outrage of the insurance industry is misplaced and the change in the rate, although long overdue, will be welcomed by those that seek justice for the severely injured.

Bags for life Wanstead resident Frank Charles has previously featured on these pages as part of our ongoing occasional Angels series of articles. True to form, Frank talks about Feed The Streetz, his latest charitable project

W

hen I was younger I lost my job and, as a result, found myself homeless for a week. Since then, I have had a great deal of sympathy for people who, for reasons often beyond their control, are living on the streets.

I was fortunate in that, when I was homeless, there was provision for people like me, and I was offered a place in a hostel. Unfortunately, in the current financial climate, safeguards such as this have largely been cut. Most people do not choose to live out of a carrier bag, sleeping on cardboard boxes, alone and afraid. There are many reasons for homelessness: breakdown of relationships, loss of job and mental health problems, to name a few.

I have been running a food bank in east London for several years and used to take food over to rough sleepers in Stratford on an ad hoc basis. Then, before Christmas, I helped out at an event for homeless people and saw how many people attended. I was shocked. So, two months ago, I decided to do something proactive. That was when I launched Feed The Streetz.

The worst part of being homeless for me was waking up, cold and lonely, with an empty stomach. I decided to make up breakfast bags and take them to people who sleep rough – mainly in Stratford but also in other parts of east London.

At the moment, my wife and I make up 20 breakfast bags a week and take them out at 6.30am on Friday mornings, feeding people in Stratford Shopping Centre, Plaistow, Leytonstone and occasionally in Wanstead.

Each breakfast bag contains a sandwich, cereal bar, fresh fruit, water and sometimes

biscuits and fruit juice. Currently, there are two other couples from Wanstead who support us with food, so what goes into the bags depends on what’s been donated. We are also grateful to the Hasler’s Foundation, who have very kindly offered a monthly donation towards this project.

Ideally, we would like to expand Feed The Streetz to 25 breakfast bags, two mornings a week, and we are looking for donations of money, cereal bars, individual bottles of water or fruit juice, individual pork pies and sausage rolls, cheese pasties, crisps, wipes, sandwich bags or anything else that can be easily given to someone who is homeless.

Money donations will pay for fresh fruit and perishables.

I am calling on the Wanstead community – individuals, shops, businesses, schools and groups – to get behind this project in any way possible because I strongly believe that no one should go hungry, regardless of their circumstances.

In the first of a series of articles explaining the work of Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch, Steve Wilks talks about the organisation’s independence and aims

A

lot of people ask me what the role of Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) is and many people think it is just about preventing crime. This is just one aspect.

It is important to note that Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch is a Trust, which is a registered charity governed by the Charities Commission.

There is a board of trustees who oversee the function and integrity of the work we do, as well as a chairman and treasurer who are also trustees. On a day-to-day level, NHW is run by a team of dedicated ward coordinators, local people whose role is to help and support watch coordinators.

The overall aim of NHW is to work together for the overall benefit of the movement in Redbridge. The organisation is not political in any sense and is independent of all groups, including Safer Neighbourhood Boards and Ward Panels (although for cohesion, a lot of members of NHW are chairmen of the panels, myself included for Wanstead and Snaresbrook). We are happy to work with these bodies to help progress our aims.

NHW, particularly in Wanstead and Snaresbrook, are actively involved in the local community. We have supported various charitable events, such as the Wanstead Playground Association’s campaign to improve the play area in Christchurch Green.

There was a charity night at the Eightyfour Gallery on Nightingale Lane last October, which was publicised by NHW and which raised a significant sum for Haven House Children’s Hospice. NHW is more than willing to help other charities and communities raise their profile in the area where it is in accordance with our aims for togetherness and reducing crime.

In short, NHW is a unifying organisation which aims to link with the community that it serves and assist with promoting other organisations where possible for the sake of community cohesion, which has the benefit of lowering crime rates. To quote the police: “With your help, we can make your local neighbourhood safer. You make the call, we’ll make it stop.”

One of the defining features of the organisation is that there is no interference or prescription on how watches should operate or be run. Support is provided in setting up a watch, but each watch coordinator is left to make their own decisions, as are the ward coordinators, with support given by Chairman Mark Glazer as necessary. We all want NHW to develop and grow. We also work very closely with the police at all levels in our joint effort to reduce crime in the borough. We are currently one of the lowest crime areas in the northeast London region.

not just squares Ahead of a stamp fair this month, Leytonstone, Wanstead & District Philatelic Society member Gordon George talks about unexpected stamp shapes, stamps with holes and stamps for kids

E

arly in the morning of Saturday 18 February, I packed a cheese and pickle sandwich, four cherry tomatoes, a packet of Hula Hoops, an apple (for a balanced diet) and a small bottle of orange squash. I caught the 101 bus to Wanstead Station, then the Tube to Angel, via Bank.

I was going to spend the whole day at The Design Centre where STAMPEX was being held. It was the last day of the four-day international postage stamp exhibition, which is held twice a year.

There were over 100 dealers present and, as well as Royal Mail, there were postal authorities from Namibia, Gibraltar, Germany, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. During the year, national competitions are held and many of the award-winning entries were on display. I am a member of the Great Britain Philatelic Society – as well as a member of the Leytonstone, Wanstead & District Philatelic Society (LWDPS) – and so attended an afternoon meeting held in one of the many mezzanine-floor meeting rooms. The talk was about early British stamps with holes in!

These stamps are called ’perfins’ and they have different patterns of holes made by various firms to deter their employees from stealing the stamps and selling them. There is a specialist organisation called The GB Perfin Society, which studies these stamps.

The thing I find very encouraging about STAMPEX is the presence of a kids’ corner, run

by Stamp Active Network, a voluntary group that promotes stamp collecting for young people in the UK. Its patron is the famous exPostman Pat, the Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP. As the exhibition was held during schools’ halfterm, STAMPEX provided a fantastic day out for families. The kids’ corner provided various activities with giveaways, competitions and

a stamp auction. This month, I too will be running a kids’ corner at the LWDPS stamp fair.

One aspect of stamp collecting I think is fun is collecting different shaped stamps.

Most people think of stamps as being only rectangular, but they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. My favourites are from New Zealand: a tea cup; Botswana: a diamond; Great Britain: Beatles record covers; Canada: a blue jay bird; Tonga: a pineapple; Trinidad and Tobago: a bottle (perhaps rum); and as you would expect from France: a (love) heart! I will be displaying a few pages of these weird and wonderful shaped stamps at the LWDPS fair.

The STAMPEX exhibition guide perhaps best sums up my thoughts on why I am passionate about stamps: “Stamp collecting must surely be the world’s most inclusive, enlightening hobby; there’s something for everyone.”

n offer came from the Rotary Club to the Wanstead Community Gardeners of one thousand purple crocuses.

A lot to plant but we couldn’t resist them.

Five hundred went in the gardens of Christ Church, and the rest were sprinkled around Wanstead, with a fair few in the station beds. Why crocuses? Why purple? That's an interesting story.

It’s a hundred years since Rotary was founded, so that’s worth celebrating for a start. In 1979 Rotary, in combination with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, began a mind-blowing project to eradicate polio.

End Polio Now started with a vaccination programme for children in the Philippines and has continued with teams of medics working their way around the globe, including the most isolated communities, vaccinating as they go. War is the great enemy here, as when a country disintegrates, foreign medics are not welcome. However, so far, 2.5 billion children have been vaccinated. The campaign logo is a purple crocus. Now, what would be the connection between a vaccination programme and a crocus? As each child is vaccinated, their little fingernail is painted with an indelible purple dye so the medics know who’s been done. The purple fingernail translates to a purple crocus, so to celebrate their 100th birthday, Rotary offered community groups all over the country a thousand crocus corms each.

One hundred years of 'do-gooding' – why is that phrase so often used in a derogatory way? Another amazing Rotary campaign. All power to their combined elbows.

We hope you enjoy the crocuses and give a thought to the children who will not now die of this dreadful disease.

The trouble with trash Recycling Officer Habiba Ahmed invites local children and their parents to take part in recycling activities at Wanstead Library this month, which will feature a recital of the story The Trouble With Dragons

O

ur first storytelling session with an environmental twist took place last October and proved very popular with parents and children. They joined us for a reading of Superworm, met live worms and learnt about our champion composting friends! This was followed by some family fun as we showed them how to build their very own worm hotel from a plastic bottle.

Following the success of this session, Wanstead Library offered Amey (Redbridge’s waste service provider) and the Redbridge Recycling Team the chance to host more school holiday storytelling sessions. For the Easter break, I have chosen The Trouble With Dragons, which was recommended by a mum who said she found this book child-friendly, with attractive illustrations of dragons and other mystical and fantastical creatures to capture a little person’s imagination. In simple rhyming text, the story delivers many environmental messages, one of which is about the impact of litter on the planet and on wildlife, and how easy it is to do the right thing and change our behaviour.

Litter remains a huge problem across the country, causing harm to the environment and wildlife, with councils in England having to spend over £700 million on street cleaning services every year. This is such a waste, and over 500 Redbridge residents recently took practical action and demonstrated their civic pride by participating in the Great British Spring Clean at the beginning of March.

They collected a staggering 800 kilograms of recycling and litter from our streets.

Our volunteer community ambassadors will be present at the storytelling session to run fun recycling and reuse activities, to share their experiences and to promote the

message that we need to respect all Earth’s creatures and cherish the land, recycle, reuse and reduce our demands.

At the event, participants will have an opportunity to find out how to take part in our upcoming waste minimisation campaigns, such as the Give and Take Community Swap Shops and the Reuse and Repair Workshops.

We will also offer advice on: zz Home composting: you can buy a compost bin for just £5, including delivery. zz Washable nappies: more than 58,800 disposable nappies are sent to landfill in Redbridge every day. Each one takes up to 500 years to break down and amounts to thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money. zz Adopt a site scheme: you can help maintain recycling banks and discourage fly-tipping.

Look who’s calling Steve Wilks, chairman of the Safer Neighbourhoods Ward Panel, explains the purpose of the Redbridge Bogus Caller Partnership and how it helps in the fight against doorstep cold calling

D

oorstep cold calling in the local community is becoming an increasing nuisance and a particular worry for our more vulnerable members of society, who may feel powerless at how they can reduce the risk of such intrusion.

Cold calling is making an unsolicited visit or telephone call to someone in an attempt to sell goods or services. Cold calling is not illegal. However, any trader who ignores a sticker or notice on your door stating you do not wish to receive cold calls may be committing a criminal offence. Also, any trader who ignores any requests by you to leave and not return is committing a criminal offence.

Anyone who does cold call and offers to sell you goods or services that cost more than £42 must provide you with a written notice giving you 14 days to cancel the agreement. Anyone who fails to give this notice will also be committing a criminal offence, which Trading Standards can investigate.

Residents have a right to choose whether or not they wish to deal with cold callers.

By displaying a sticker or sign on your door, you should be able to expect your wishes to be respected. The Redbridge Bogus Caller Partnership is committed to tackling doorstep crime. It wants to give you the choice and confidence to say no to cold calling traders on your doorstep. A pack has been put together that has an outside and inside door sticker (the indoor sticker gives details of how you can contact Redbridge Trading Standards and the police). Of most concern to us are traders who target the elderly and vulnerable.

They offer services like roofing, block paving, guttering, painting and gardening. The stickers are designed to make it clear to any would-be cold callers that they are not welcome, and it is hoped most traders will

respect your wishes. However, there is no guarantee that by displaying a sticker you will not receive visits from any cold calling traders.

If traders do ignore your sticker, please let Trading Standards know. The information will be used to build up intelligence and identify the worst offenders to take action against.

The advice is never to deal with cold callers.

Cold calling is a favourite method of rogue traders whose only aim is to get as much money from their victims as possible. Even if you avoid dealing with rogue traders, those who cold call will usually be persuasive and often catch you when you least expect it and your guard is down. A new exhibition at Redbridge Museum explores 400 years of local fashion through the museum’s collections. Museum Officer Alex Lyons sheds some light on ‘What Redbridge Wore’

In his portrait, Roe is sporting a large ruff, a popular accessory in the late 1500s and early 1600s. Ruffs were expensive because they were hard to maintain as they needed constant starching. They sat under the chin, pushing it up, which gave the wearer a haughty and dignified expression, a look synonymous with wealth and power.

This theme continues with two specially commissioned replica dresses on display. The first dates from 1770 and is made from chintz, a hugely popular Indian printed textile of the type worn by the wives of wealthy merchants in Wanstead and Woodford. The second dress is a Regency gown from 1815 and is modelled on an outfit worn by Catherine Tylney-Long, owner of Wanstead House from 1805 to 1825.

Catherine’s dress has a high waist and flowing fabric, which loosely followed the contours of the body. The dress was worn without restrictive corsets and was influenced by the neo-classical style of ancient Greece and Rome, which was popular in art, literature and fashion from the late 18th century.

Until the advent of washing machines in the 1950s, clothing would have been washed by hand. The exhibition features a Victorian laundry room, complete with tub, washboard and mangle, which will no doubt spark many memories for older visitors who remember Monday was always ’wash day’.

he exhibition opens with a copy of an impressive portrait of Sir Thomas Roe from 1610. Roe lived at Woodford Hall and is buried at St Mary’s Church in South Woodford. In 1615 he was sent to India by King James I to act as ambassador for the East India Company (EIC). Thanks to his work, the EIC began to import Indian cotton textiles, which changed what people in England wore forever.

The displays examine everyday clothing for work, rest and play taken from Redbridge Museum’s collections. First World War soldiers’ uniforms, nurses’ gowns and a 1960s police officer’s ceremonial jacket show the variety of occupations that rely upon a uniform. During the Second World War, many local people donned such a uniform as illustrated by a Wanstead and Woodford ARP Warden’s boiler suit. Fred James of Herongate Road, Wanstead, was one such warden and a diary extract from 26 September 1940 reveals: "At 4.10am we were awakened by a violent explosion. I sleep in my uniform so it only needed my top coat on to make me ready for investigation."

The exhibition also celebrates the fun side of fashion. A ’flapper’ dress from the 1920s Jazz Age and Mod suits from the 1960s show how local people dressed to impress. The exhibition ends with a look at local clothes shops and although Wanstead and Woodford historically had few large fashion chain stores, they do retain a handful of boutiques catering for locals.

In the fifth of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of the Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to young flautist Daniel Swani, who will be performing at Wanstead Library this month

A

common thread throughout Redbridge Music Society’s current ’Wigmore to Wanstead’ programme is to bring talented young musicians to the attention of the Redbridge public via the provision of a performance opportunity in front of a critical but supportive audience at a local venue. On 27 April, local young flautist and recorder player Daniel Swani will perform works ranging from baroque to modern at the Churchill Room in Wanstead Library.

Daniel was born in 1999 and started flute and recorder lessons at the age of 10. Whilst attending Woodbridge High School, he studied for five years at Redbridge Music School and was principal flute in the Redbridge Music School Symphony Orchestra.

Daniel currently studies flute with Anna Pope and recorder with Barbara Law at The Purcell School, where he holds a government MDS scholarship. On Saturdays, he attends the Junior Royal Academy of Music, where he was awarded the senior woodwind prize.

He is principal flute in the Junior Academy Symphony Orchestra and a member of the recorder consort.

He is currently a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and was previously principal flute with the London Schools’ Symphony Orchestra. With these orchestras, Daniel has performed at London’s Royal Festival and Albert Halls and the Barbican Centre; he has also participated in a tour of Sweden. This year he became a London Philharmonic Orchestra Junior Artist, taking part in a programme that provides invaluable career development for promising artists.

In 2012 Daniel was given the opportunity to perform alongside members of the London

Symphony Orchestra (LSO) at the London Olympics Opening Ceremony in Stratford.

In May 2014 he again played alongside the LSO at their 2014 open-air concert in Trafalgar Square, under the internationally-famous conductor Valery Gergiev. In November 2016 he performed live on BBC Radio 3’s drivetime show In Tune as part of the Chineke Foundation Junior Wind Quartet.

Daniel is particularly grateful for the generous support of The Walter Bergman Fund and The Felicity Belfield Trust. Recently, he was awarded a scholarship offer to study at the Royal Academy of Music as a full-time student and will take this up in September 2017.

Daniel’s burning ambition is to be a performing musician and to have a seat in a top London orchestra. He is an outstanding player, both technically and musically, and many would agree that eventually playing in a major London orchestra is a foregone conclusion for such a talented young man.

Good shot!

Local photographer Tim Reder is a football enthusiast and has in the past year published photographic studies of Leyton Orient and West Ham United. In the fifth of a series of articles, Tim explains that football isn't everything

S

hortly after completing my projects, making photographic documentary records of my local football clubs Leyton Orient, West Ham United and then Tottenham Hotspur, I became Orient’s official club photographer. As well as taking pictures for club purposes, this allowed me to continue my historic recording of my favourite club. Additionally, I expanded taking football documentary photography to other clubs up and down the country, the highlight coming in 1997, when one weekend I photographed the last competitive games at both Roker Park, Sunderland and the Victoria Ground, Stoke City.

When I stopped being Orient photographer in 2001 my next stop was Verona, where I photographed the first season of minnows Chievo playing in serie A (the Italian equivalent of the Premier League), at the end of which the club published a book of the pictures to celebrate its achievements. One thing leading to another, I then spent many a weekend over the next five years travelling the length and breadth of Italy, recording the passion of football in that country. It was quite a thrill to be at the touchline at the great stadiums in Turin, Milan and Rome, photographing some of the best teams and players in the world, in front of wildly colourful and passionate supporters. I then selected the

April 2017 best photographs for a self-published book, Calcissimo – The Spectacle of Italian Football.

I photographed football not just as a historic record but also as a means of expression, so football was never going to be my only artistic outlet. From the outset, my subject matter was eclectic, being attracted to everything in which I found meaning, whether it be human, architectural, floral or fauna, figurative or abstract. Much of my earliest work was street photography, where I would look to capture a special moment or a striking architectural facet. These moments may be small or grand, but all could be given the same intensity and significance through the medium of photography. Most of this output was black and white film. I greatly enjoyed the process and became proficient at printing, which meant hundreds of hours in the darkroom breathing in unhealthy chemicals.

As you can imagine, I became an advocate of digital photography as soon as cameras could obtain results commensurate with that of film.

This transformed my work, enabling me to do so much more with a picture and at far greater speed. Not having to worry about film and developing costs has allowed photographers to be more experimental.

Film has left me one final task and I am now in the process of scanning my negatives. One subject in my archive of particular interest to Wansteadians will be my documenting of the M11 link road demonstrations. More recently, I have photographed top-level hockey and most particularly Surbiton Hockey Club, whose ladies’ team have been national champions for the past three years and of whom three of its players were in the GB side that won Olympic gold in Rio. Whatever direction photography leads me in next, I know it will be an exciting journey.

Forest School marks first-ever

Sleep Week

Forest School, in Snaresbrook, marked its first-ever Sleep Week from Monday 20 to Friday 24 March 2017. During the week, pupils and staff learned more about the benefits of sleep and its influence on our wellbeing and mental health.

Recently there has been increasing reports in the media about children’s mental health, and at Forest, we believe its important to try and address those issues in school. In 2017, we know more and more pupils are working later into the night, sending emails and posting on social media when should be sleeping, meaning many are finding it hard to switch off and get a good night’s sleep.

Research has shown being well-rested means pupils’ resilience will increase, and they will be better prepared to face the difficulties of modern life and the challenges of growing into responsible adults.

Staff and pupils also took part in sleep yoga, on the top floor of the Martin Centre, which gave them the tools and methods to switch off after a long day. Following day one, the second saw Foresters take part in a non-uniform day, with pupils from Lower School given the chance to wear onesies.

The week’s main event was the ‘Fone Fast’ which saw pupils and staff hand in their mobile phones for 12 or 24 hours. Speaking about the event, Forest teacher Mrs Rebecca Kay said: “The fast was a big success with more than 450 pupils taking part during the day. The pupils really engaged with the day and I think many relaxed and thought more about how turning their phone off can help them achieve uninterrupted sleep, which leads to feeling more refreshed the next day.”

During the week, there were a number of events to raise awareness of the benefits of sleep and to encourage pupils to sleep more.

Freethinking T

he Bishopsgate Institute is an architectural gem a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street. It houses a remarkable collection of archives. Their archivist, Stefan Dickers, will speak at this month’s East London Humanists meeting, marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Holyoake. The Institute is an important repository of material relating to Holyoake and the ’freethinking’ and Humanist movements.

East London has a rich tradition of freethinkers who have questioned religious and social orthodoxy. Although the death penalty for blasphemy was abolished in 1676, it remained a grave crime and speaking out was highly risky. Not surprisingly, little is recorded of such views before the early 1800s. George Holyoake, born April 1817, founded the National Secular Society and coined the terms ’secularism’ and ’jingoism.’ He was the last person in England to be prosecuted for ’blasphemy in a public lecture.’ He was imprisoned for six months.

Another pioneer was Mary Wollstonecraft, born in Spitalfields in 1759. Subsequent addresses included Epping and Hoxton. She died tragically at 42, shortly after giving birth to daughter Mary, wife of the poet Shelley and author of Frankenstein. Mary Wollstonecraft defied convention in many ways, not least as a woman writing on politics and philosophy. A passionate believer in education and rational thinking, she is probably best remembered for A Vindication of the Rights of Women, an early discourse on feminist philosophy.

A more recent pioneer was Sylvia Pankhurst.

Born in Manchester, she moved to east London in 1912. An atheist, feminist and lifelong fighter for social justice, she chose east London as an area where she felt she could

make a difference. In 1914 she founded the East London Federation of Suffragettes. Sylvia moved to Woodford Green, where she lived for over 30 years.

The Bishopsgate Institute also houses an important collection relating to Charles Bradlaugh. He was kicked out of his home in Hoxton at 15 after questioning religion. He met George Holyoake in Hackney and was soon caught up in the freethinking movement.

One important event that caught national attention was his prosecution for publishing a book on contraception. Another was his election as MP for Northampton in 1880.

Bradlaugh, an atheist, was not prepared to swear the religious oath required to take his seat. At one point, he was imprisoned in the small cell at the bottom of Big Ben. The Institute also holds a treasure trove of archives on the history of London and runs many courses and events. It is free and open to all.

Love park life

Epping Forest keepers are better known for stopping people from starting fires, but one Sunday in March they were doing just the opposite. Jo Blackman from the Friends of Wanstead Parklands reports

L

ast month, Epping Forest keepers were teaching bushcraft and survival skills to children in Wanstead Park. This included sessions where children looked at man-made shelters and had a go at making their own natural shelters in the woods.

There were also sessions about fire: how and why we need it and how to light one when your matches get wet.

Not only did these sessions provide great entertainment for children and their families, but they also helped them develop vital skills – motor skills, coordination, listening and teamwork. They helped the children understand and respect their natural environment. And if they ever get lost in the wilderness, they might come in handy, too!

The Friends of Wanstead Parklands are helping to organise these events because we want more children to enjoy the park. We know how lucky we are to have such a fantastic resource on our doorstep and we want children and their families to make full use of it. Studies show that children are spending significantly less time playing outside than their parents did. Parents are concerned about the risks associated with playing outdoors, particularly unaccompanied play. All the evidence points to the benefits of outdoor play for children, including for their physical and sensory development and their imaginations. Children use five times as many words when they play outdoors compared to indoors. There’s also a direct correlation between obesity and lack of time spent outside.

Readers may be familiar with the campaign for play equipment in Wanstead Park. We are waiting to see whether the City of London Corporation, which manages Wanstead Park, will meet its target of submitting a first round

bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund in August.

This bid should cover urgently needed work on the lakes, paths and entrances, and improved visitors’ services, including natural play equipment. Redbridge Council is also keen to see the bid proceed with natural play provision. So, whilst we may still be some way off from having equipment installed, we’re hoping that events like the one last month will provide opportunities for families to get together and enjoy the park. A generation that grows up playing in parklands is a generation that will continue to respect and enjoy our green space throughout their lives, and in turn, look after them for future generations.

So, please help us spread the word to get more children playing in our parks.

The March event was part of our regular programme of activities in the park this year.

We are particularly grateful to the Epping Forest keepers for hosting these sessions and for the important work they do throughout the year looking after Wanstead Park and the rest of Epping Forest.
