Welcome... When she was born on 21 April 1926, at 2.40am to be precise, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was not expected to become Queen. Granted, she had a better chance of ascending the throne than anyone else born that day given that, at the time of her birth, she stood third in line of succession after Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) and her father, the Duke of York. But it was equally unexpected that her father would become King, which he did 10 years later following his brother's abdication. This month, that new-born royal will become the first reigning British monarch to reach the age of 90. The nation may have to wait until May and June for the official celebrations, but it is this month that marks Queen Elizabeth II's chronological accomplishment, the culmination of an unlikely series of events; greatness out of the unexpected, even. Of course, for many of us subjects, it's probably fair to say that our own life stories were equally unpredictable at the time of our births. And given the no-doubt highly controlled world in which the Royal Family exists, I expect it's fair to say our lives have a far greater degree of randomness than that of the Windsors. Who could have predicted that, at the time of their own children's births, a group of local parents would go on to be crowned champions of our community for their work in restoring the local playground (see page 6)? Who could have predicted that a girl born in India in the 1920s would one day be recounting tales of her life to members of a community group in Aldersbrook (see page 8)? Who could have predicted that youngsters posing for photographs over a century ago would end up being viewed by a local history group at Wanstead Library (see page 10)? As unexpected as any of these aforementioned events may seem, from those of national importance to very localised achievements, it's clear that the real celebrations in each case should be for the journeys taken as much as the end results. To put it another way, on one's birthday, one's family and friends celebrate one's life to date, not just the one day. Lee Marquis, Editor

Campaign of a lifetime

Opera at the church

A residents' group representing those affected by noise and pollution from London City Airport is hoping to raise £25k to enable them to continue their fight against the airport's new concentrated flight paths, which came into force in February. "We are going to be mounting the 'Campaign of a Lifetime', which will aim to reverse these changes within 12 months, when the Civil Aviation Authority must review airspace changes," said a spokesperson for HACAN East. Visit wavidi.com/lca

An evening of light opera will take place at St Mary's Church on Overton Drive next month to raise funds for the ongoing restoration of a painting that has hung in the church for over a century. Last year, the artwork was found to be a 17th century copy of The Entombment of Christ by Italian artist Guercino and a campaign was launched to raise the £30k needed to restore it. The event will take place on 21 May from 7.30pm (tickets: £10) and will feature a variety of musical styles. Call 020 8518 8687

Memories of British India

Churchill Fellow

Aldersbrook resident June Cocksedge will be giving a talk to the Wanstead Park Women's Club this month about her memories of growing up in British India during the 1920s to the 1950s. June spent much of her time in parts of India that are 'little known to modern-day tourists'. "Firstly in Assam – as it was in the days of Empire… Then in Quetta, Balochistan… Finally… in Nainital, a Himalayan hill station," said June, whose presentation will take place at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 25 April. The Angel and The Cad: meet the author in Wanstead Park

Local historian Geraldine Roberts will be discussing her book The Angel and The Cad – which explores the life of Wanstead House heiress Catherine Tylney Long – at Wanstead Park's Temple this month. "I hope that [my book] has challenged some of the myths and

legends surrounding Catherine. It's always interesting to discuss the story with the Wanstead community, so I'm very much looking forward to it," said Geraldine, who will be signing copies of her book at the free event on 17 April from 1pm to 3pm. Call 020 7332 1911

A decision is due to be made this month over plans to rebuild The Chestnuts care home on Cambridge Park. Property owners Westgate Healthcare are seeking to carryout a 'major overhaul to bring it up to the required standards'. Local residents, however, have voiced

concerns. "We object to this development on the grounds that it is too high, blocks out light and also removes the last building of its kind on Cambridge Park. The road would have once been populated with many villas like this," said Wanstead Society chair Scott Wilding.

Play plans With new play equipment due to be installed on Christchurch Green at the end of this month, Wanstead Playground Association members Nicola Jarratt, Sarah Boud, Louise Meenaghan and Danielle Palmer look back on 18 months of fundraising

When we started, Plan A was to raise just over £40,000 to enable us to replace a few pieces of equipment and refurbish a couple of others. Our Plan B – which seemed wildly optimistic at the time – was to raise over £100,000 for a completely new playground. Well, we've managed to raise £103,000, so we're going for Plan B! There'll be a few old favourites staying – including the tractor and the rope swing – but we wanted to make sure that the children had a new playground by the summer. Thanks are due to Redbridge Council, who met the final £10,000 shortfall to enable us to order the equipment. We're really excited by the pieces that are being installed. We sent out a community consultation to gauge what was needed and whilst we were never going to keep everyone happy, we think there's plenty to entertain the diverse groups who will be using the playground. Key concerns were accessibility, safety and age range and these have been at the forefront of the design process. The new playground will include a trampoline, wheelchair-accessible roundabout (courtesy of Morrison's Foundation), tango swings that both parent and child can ride on together, and not one but three sets of climbing frames. We were really sorry that we couldn't include pieces for I

It's fair to say we tried every fundraising route possible, from glamorous events such as our WOODBINE black tie gala dinner to tramping up and down the High Street delivering mailshots; entertaining children at our Frozen singalongs and manning WOODBINE a stall at the farmers' market in the freezing cold. You name it, we've done it! Local residents and businesses came on board too, running a Santa's grotto, Christmas fetes, toddler discos and photography sessions, among other things. We're grateful to each and every resident and business who supported us, either by donating financially, running an event for us, painting playground fences or creating our website and Spacehive video. There are far too many to mention here, but all are listed on our website. The events raised Special Uni-mini multi-activ over £10,000. However, the bulk of our fundsG play unit (SP5904) have come from success in applying for grants (nearly £60,000). We were very lucky in that our Front view

In the first of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of the Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to Alexandra Whittingham, who will be performing classical guitar music at the library this month

R

edbridge Music Society (originally the Goodmayes & District Gramophone Society) was founded in 1949 and, since its inception, many internationally famous musicians have performed or given presentations for the group. Past presidents of the society include the accompanist Gerald Moore, concert pianist John Ogden and the operatic baritone Derek Hammond-Stroud. The current president is the conductor Dr Donald Hoskins. The overall aim of the society is to encourage local community appreciation and engagement in the musical arts. The society also endeavours to promote the musical development of talented young musicians by providing them with a performance platform in front of a supportive and encouraging audience. The society has pioneered a Youth Musical Appreciation Development Scheme, which provides free entrance to the society's events for all those under 16 years of age and all local students. Recitals are held monthly from October to May at either the Lambourne Room in Redbridge Town Hall or the Churchill Room in Wanstead Library. Complimentary light refreshments are provided at all events and during the interval the audience has the opportunity to meet the artists. This month, outstanding 18-year-old guitarist Alexandra Whittingham will be giving a recital of classical and Spanish guitar music at Wanstead Library. Alexandra currently studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Previously, she studied classical and jazz guitar, piano and composition at the world-renowned Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, during which time she became a member of the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra, touring extensively with them in Germany and the Czech Republic. In her final year at the school she gained her LRSM (Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music) second diploma in guitar performance. In 2013 Alexandra won the inaugural Edinburgh Guitar Competition and following this, travelled to Budapest to

take part in the Carpathian International Youth Guitar Competition, where she achieved second place. In 2015 at the Gregynog Young Musicians' Competition, Alexandra became Gregynog Young Guitarist of the year after her performance of Leo Brouwer's Sonata and Albeniz's Sevilla. Alexandra has played at many prestigious venues, including The Bridgewater Hall, the Yehudi Menuhin School and at the British Embassy in Paris, where she performed to an invited audience of diplomats in February 2015. Later that year she was also invited to perform Castelnuovo Tedesco's Concerto No.1 with the Gorton Philharmonic Orchestra. Recently, Alexandra reached the classical final of the Sky Arts Guitar Competition, which gave her the opportunity to play in Milton Court Concert Hall at the Barbican, London. During the course of the competition she was very fortunate to be able to work with the internationally famous classical guitarist, Miloš Karadaglić. Alexandra plays on an Antonio Sanchez 2500 guitar. Alexandra will perform at Wanstead Library on 26 April from 8pm. Tickets will be available on the door (visitors: £10; Redbridge Music Society members: £7). For more information, call 07511 888 520 or visit redbridgemusicsociety.org.uk

BEHIND THE WIRE At a Wanstead Park Women's Club event this month Mark Gorman and Peter Williams will be recounting tales from the prisoner of war camps that were sited on Wanstead Flats during the Second World War

W

anstead Flats has had many uses over the years, from cattle grazing to circuses, fairs and football, but perhaps none more unusual than when it became the site of camps housing thousands of German and Italian prisoners of war. During the Second World War the open spaces of Wanstead Flats were ideal for military use. Anti-aircraft batteries and barrage balloons were set up there, and in 1944 the Flats became an important assembly point for D-Day. From 6 June until October 1944, allied forces captured well over half a million Germans, creating a huge logistics challenge. Preparations had, however, been made and prisoners flooded into more than 1,000 makeshift camps throughout Britain to serve out the war. Among these, a camp was set up on Wanstead Flats as one of a number of satellites of east London's main camp in Stratford (now somewhere under the Olympic Stadium). The Wanstead Flats camp, established on the fairground site at the western end of the Flats, was not the first there. Since 1941 Italian prisoners captured in North Africa had been housed on the Flats. Local residents remember how, as children, they used to exchange snails for haircuts and wooden toys the prisoners made. The Italians seemed very happy there, which was just as well, since locals remarked on the flimsy barbed wire and lack of guards. After Italy's surrender in September 1943, many Italian prisoners of war became 'cooperators', and those camped on the Flats were often seen in the area, set to work to clear bomb damage. Some were even sent to work at the London Docks. As the Germans arrived they became the objects of great local interest. Large crowds gathered around the camp's perimeter to watch the Germans play football. There were complaints of "girls throwing sweets and cigarettes to the prisoners", much to the resentment of the British guards. Not all the German prisoners had given up the fight – there were reports of some

An Italian prisoner of war

cheering and shouting "Sieg Heil" as bombs fell on the nearby Lake House estate. The British authorities therefore divided the prisoners into those who were considered unpolitical and hardcore Nazis. The latter were supposed to be the last to be sent back home. Efforts were also made to re-educate as well as entertain some of the prisoners – through trips to the Albert Hall, to local council meetings and even to see West Ham home games. The local resident who recalled seeing the prisoners marching to Upton Park commented: "Whether they appealed to the Red Cross on the grounds of inhuman treatment I don't know!" Most prisoners left the camp soon after the war, but the last of them only departed in the summer of 1946. Not all went back home – at least one is known to have married a local girl and settled in Essex. The huge camp on Wanstead Flats became part of the memories of local people at a unique time in the history of Britain and of this area. Mark and Peter's talk for the Wanstead Park Women's Club will take place at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 11 April from 8pm. For more information, call 020 8532 9093

In the run up to the EU referendum on 23 June, we're asking people in the local community if they are 'in' or 'out'. Here, Scott Wilding from the Wanstead Society explains why he's 'in'

B

eing part of the EU is good for the UK and for Wanstead. It boils down to just three things: trade, security and science. Let me show you why remaining in is positive for all of us. Leavers say that if we divorce the EU our trade would improve with the rest of the world. But we would lose access to over 50 free trade agreements we are already part of, and what would we sell to the rest of the world? UK manufacturing accounts for just 13% of our economy, whereas our services sector (accounting, insurance, banking etc) makes up 78% of our economy. The problem with this is that the majority of what we sell (services) can be bought from other EU countries. Cities like Frankfurt and Paris would relish the chance to impose tariffs on their major financial services competitor, London, should we leave. Remaining in the EU means they can't, and if you work in London, staying in will protect your job. Indeed, some three million jobs are linked to trade with the EU, with the UK benefiting from £66m of investment every day from other EU countries. Additionally, 61% of small business trade is with the EU, which means that leaving would directly and adversely affect businesses in Wanstead. Don't be fooled by the idea that we can get a 'special arrangement' with the EU after we leave; we can't. Norway and Switzerland both pay the EU money so they can sell their goods to over 500 million consumers, and so would we. Norway accepts 75% of EU laws and, crucially, has to accept the free movement of people. Why would the UK be any different? We have access to half a billion customers. Why jeopardise this opportunity? On the subject of security, in February, 12 former Chiefs of the Defence Staff all signed an open letter in which they said Britain was more secure in the EU. Why would they do this? They aren't politicians up for election. It can only be because the UK is more secure when part of a family of nations that implements EU-wide arrest

Scott Wilding

Frankfurt

warrants and tackles global issues from terrorism to Russian aggression together. It's the EU that has led sanctions against Russia when it invaded Ukraine and it's the EU that's working together to end people trafficking in the Mediterranean and conflict on its borders. All of which makes us safer. Never forget the EU was borne out of a desire to end devastating wars in Europe, and to that end it has worked. Looking at the environment, it's clear that it's not possible to target pollution alone. EU standards on air quality and emissions mean we fight climate change together. The EU, with its vast research budgets, directly benefits the UK's scientific and educational communities, which combat illnesses and develop breakthroughs in far greater quantities than we could do alone. Leaving the EU is a backward step for Britain, with years of uncertainty ahead. Remaining in the EU makes the UK richer, safer and cleaner. However you vote – vote. Don't wake up on 24 June with a decision you didn't want, because you didn't make a choice. Scott is chairman of the Wanstead Society – visit wansteadsociety.org.uk The EU referendum is scheduled for 23 June. The deadline to register to vote is 7 June – visit gov.uk/register-to-vote

The POND PROBLEM In the fifth of a series of articles, Richard Arnopp from the Friends of Wanstead Parklands and Tim Harris from the Wren Wildlife Group take a look at the history of Wanstead Park's Basin, which is the least problematic in the park's five-lake system

Edwardian postcard of The Basin

T

he Basin is the northernmost of Wanstead Park's cascade of lakes and is situated at a significantly higher elevation than the others. Sitting within Wanstead Golf Course, it is not part of the area administered by the City of London Corporation. As it is visible to the public only from Overton Drive, it is perhaps the least known of Wanstead Park's water bodies, despite being – at just over 10 acres in area – the second largest. The origins of The Basin go back to the time of Sir Josiah Child, who bought the Wanstead estate in 1673. It seems to have been constructed from scratch as a pair of semicircular ponds flanking the main driveway to Wanstead House from the direction of

Leytonstone. These were first mentioned by one J. Gibson in 1691, who described "two large fish-ponds. In the middle of each pond is an island, and in the middle of each a house. They are said to be well stocked with fish and so they had need to be if they cost him [Sir Josiah Child] five thousand pounds". Located on what had been a gentle slope, the ponds were contained by a massive embankment to the south, the construction of which would have accounted for a large proportion of the cost. They appear, exactly as Gibson described, on one of Jan Kip's views of Wanstead Park of about 1708 to 1710. Sir Josiah Child's layout only lasted for about three decades before being given a radical makeover by his son Sir Richard, who had been

ennobled in 1718 as Viscount Castlemaine. This involved the transformation of the two ponds into a single large expanse of water in the form of a slightly irregular octagon, with the driveway diverted around its edges. The later landscape designer Humphry Repton believed that The Basin's design had been inspired by André Le Nôtre, designer of the great French parks of Vaux-le-Vicomte and Versailles: "…experience having pointed out the monotony of a long avenue, where the house is always seen in the same point of view, Le Nôtre boldly conceived an idea, which was realized at Woburn, at Wanstead, and in the front of some other palaces, viz. to obstruct its course by placing a large round basin, or pond, in the middle of the avenue, which not only obliged the road to pass round it, but, by acting as a mirror, shewed the house doubled in its reflection on the surface, and thus increased the importance of its architecture." According to members of Wanstead Golf Club, the foundation of the old driveway between the two original fishponds is only four foot beneath the surface of the current Basin, such that, on a dry year, it is possible to walk across it. This is borne out by aerial photographs, on which the driveway and the bases of the two islands are occasionally visible. Work on the lake had clearly been completed by 1722, when John Macky describes it as "a Bason of Water of near half a Mile in Circumference, on which my Lord keeps a Gondola for his Pleasure". In 1727 it appears that another early visitor had a closer encounter with the pond than he anticipated. According to the Norwich Gazette: "We hear that last Week Benjamin Collyer, Esq; Member of Parliament for Grimsby, going to see the Lord Castlemain's great Pond on Epping-Forest, his Coach was overset into it, and he was got out with much Difficulty." It has been suggested that The Basin at Wanstead may, in its turn, have inspired the (somewhat smaller) water body of the same name in Kensington Gardens, where the general relationship between palace, lake and avenues is strikingly reminiscent of Wanstead. In fact, there is a proven link between Wanstead House and Kensington Palace in the person of William Kent, who was responsible for decorating the state rooms of both buildings.

Kent was a more significant landscape designer than he was a painter, and may have had some influence on the gardens at both Wanstead and Kensington. It is also possible that Henry Wise and Charles Bridgeman, who were in charge of redesigning the gardens at Kensington, may both have been involved at Wanstead in some capacity. The Basin has undergone some minor alterations in recent decades with the construction of teeing-off platforms in some of the corners. A small island in approximately its centre is also a 20th-century addition. Although the lake is perhaps the least problematic in the park, as groundwater keeps its own water level fairly constant, it sadly no longer contributes very much to the lakes downstream. This is probably due to the loss of much of its former catchment area to development since 1900. Quiet and protected by the golf course, the relatively deep waters of The Basin appeal to diving waterbirds, especially when levels are low elsewhere in the park. The lake is thus important for tufted duck, pochard and both great crested and little grebes. The central area of The Basin is also the last area to freeze in very cold snaps. Then, a host of ducks may be seen crowded into the unfrozen section. When the waterfowl have finished a feeding session they can often be seen loafing on or around the willow-shaded island in the middle of the lake. A cormorant or grey heron may be seen in the willow, the former with its wings stretched out wide to dry. In the winter of 2014 to 2015 gadwall numbers peaked at 180 here, while the sedge-bordered margins of the north and west shores are popular with nesting moorhens. In summer a common tern may be seen diving for small fish. This graceful summer visitor does not breed on the lake but individuals sometimes wander here from the Roding Valley. The manicured greens and fairways of the golf course, which wraps around the lake, are favoured by grazing Egyptian geese, while the song of a mistle thrush may be heard in one of the neighbouring trees. Intriguingly, the last local record of a lesser spotted woodpecker was in a tree at the northeast corner of the lake. The Richmond Poisoner Wanstead Village Directory

At this month's meeting of the East of London Family History Society at Wanstead Library, author Peter Maggs will be exploring the fascinating story of Thomas Smethurst, aka The Richmond Poisoner

I

n the late spring of 1859 Richmond upon Thames was rocked by a scandal. Thomas Smethurst, a retired doctor, and his wife Isabella had recently come to live in the town. Isabella fell ill with vomiting and diarrhoea and Smethurst was suspected of slowly poisoning her. Samples of her bodily waste were sent for analysis and Professor Taylor of Guy's Hospital found arsenic in one of them. Smethurst was arrested and accused of trying to poison his wife. He was released, but Isabella died the next day. Smethurst was rearrested and charged with murder. Isabella had made her will in his favour two days before she died, signing herself 'Isabella Bankes, spinster', and leaving her money to her 'sincere and beloved friend, Thomas Smethurst…'. Smethurst had married Isabella Bankes bigamously. Arsenic was found in one of Smethurst's bottles of 'medicine'. The sensational trial of Dr Smethurst commenced at the Old Bailey on 15 August 1859. Thirteen medical and scientific witnesses concluded that Isabella's symptoms were consistent only with poisoning. However, Professor Taylor, who had carried out the toxicological tests, had to admit in court to a blunder. The arsenic apparently found in Smethurst's bottle was actually a contaminant in the copper gauze Taylor had used in the analysis. He insisted, nevertheless, that arsenic was present in the sample of bodily waste, although no arsenic was found in the body. Seven medical experts for the defence declared that Isabella's symptoms were entirely compatible with natural causes. The postmortem had shown Isabella to have been pregnant, and there were many cases on record where pregnant women had died from the effects of excessive vomiting and diarrhoea. The judge took eight hours to sum up. He was convinced of Smethurst's guilt, claiming that Isabella had been duped and Smethurst had married her purely for her money. On Friday

A sketch of Thomas Smethurst made at his trial

19 August the jury found Smethurst guilty and he was sentenced to be hanged. There was an outcry in the press. The judge was accused of bias, Professor Taylor's blunder was said to have invalidated the toxicological tests and the medical evidence for the prosecution was equivocal at best. The Home Secretary was inundated with letters and petitions in favour of Smethurst and by Friday 2 September 1859, four days before the execution, the London newspapers had published 36 editorials and over 260 letters on the case. The great majority were critical of the trial outcome. The medical press demolished the prosecution's case and the legal press agreed also that the trial had been a travesty. More revelations were to follow. Come along to Wanstead Library this month to find out what happened next in the extraordinary case of Dr Thomas Smethurst, The Richmond Poisoner. Peter's talk will take place at 7.30pm on 27 April at Wanstead Library. Visitors are welcome (£1.50) – call 020 8554 8414 Peter's book, Smethurst's Luck, the story of Thomas Smethurst, is published by Mirli Books, priced £9.99 – visit mirlibooks.com

Safe as houses? Derek Inkpin, a partner in the property department at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, takes a look at property fraud, highlighting two real-life cases that should make any homeowner take note

T

he computerisation of the world has changed our lives beyond recognition from that understood by our grandparents. However, as we all know, it comes at a huge price because of fraud perpetrated on the internet. Fraud threatens each of us, our businesses and the economy upon which we rely. Fraudsters are attracted to property because it can be sold and mortgaged, raising money for their dishonest activities. Take two scams as examples: zz Your identity is stolen by an individual or couple. They go to a solicitor with your ID and ask that your property is transferred to their alleged son-in-law. Before the scam takes place the criminals have discovered that your property is mortgage-free, making it an ideal target. Once transferred they obtain a mortgage secured on your property for ÂŁ325,000. You then discover what has happened while you are living in your house. Once notified you feel sick. Sounds fanciful? This happened. The criminals disappeared. Apart from the shock and worry to the house owner in that case, leading to yet another claim on the Land Registry compensation fund, the worry this caused is something with which we can all empathise. Millions in compensation has been paid by the Land Registry since Land and Charge Certificates (proof of ownership) were abolished in 2003. zz Mr and Mrs Jones were the joint owners of their property. After they had died the property remained empty for months whilst their family sorted out probate and the sale of the property. One day, a family member passed the house and saw a Sold sign outside. The estate agent was contacted and confirmed that contracts were close to being exchanged. The seller's true identity was unknown, but false ID had led to the estate agent and the instructed solicitors acting for a fraudster. Many other examples exist because dishonest people think of multiple ways of selling or

mortgaging property unbeknown to the true owners or their families. So what can be done? The Land Registry has a service called Property Alert. If you register for this service and a fraudster tries to sell or mortgage your property you will be alerted so that you can take swift action. Vulnerable owners, such as the elderly without a mortgage or empty property owners, can apply to the Land Registry to enter a Restriction on the Register, preventing a sale or mortgage from being registered without a certificate being provided either by the owner or, better still, their solicitor. If you are a buy-to-let landlord but have moved since you purchased the property, make sure you inform the Land Registry of your new address so you can be contacted easily. As property owners, we are all vulnerable if a property is left empty, tenanted or you no longer have a mortgage secured on it. Thankfully, fraud cases are rare but they are increasing. Although the Land Registry continues to develop its counter-fraud measures, we must remember that challenges relating to online conveyancing continue to generate new scams and we all need to be vigilant to ensure we protect our most valuable asset. For more information and advice on property fraud, call Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000

Reading the riot act Following a talk by Gillian Slovo – author of this year's Cityread London riot-themed book – at Wanstead Library last month, Rhonda Brooks takes a look at the work of the South African-born writer

C

This year's book is Ten Days by Gillian Slovo. South African-born Gillian lives in London and is the author of 14 novels, two plays and two biographies, including a family memoir, Every Secret Thing. Ten Days was influenced by Gillian's research for her play The Riots (which recalls the events of 2011) and is a powerful and unputdownable thriller tracing a riot from its inception through to its impact one year on. The story takes an unflinching look at how lives are ruined and careers made when small misjudgements have profound effects on frustrated communities and damaged individuals. Told through the shifting perspectives of three main characters – the newly appointed police chief, the Home Secretary and Cathy Mason, a resident on an estate due to be demolished – Ten Days is about what happens when politics, policing and the hard realities of living in London collide. "London is my second city, my adopted city and the city that I love. In Ten Days I have written about the many Londons that I encounter. What an honour then to be chosen for Cityread London 2016. I can't think of a better way to meet readers and share the thoughts that drive my writing," said Gillian. Gillian's 2004 work Ice Road was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction. The novel incorporates real events (the death of Sergey Kirov) with a fictionalised rendering of life during the Siege of Leningrad. Cityread London is created and delivered by Stellar Libraries CIC in partnership with London's

ityread London is celebrated in April every year and asks London's residents, workers and visitors to pick up a book – the same book – and read it together. A month-long programme of a wide range of events, including book groups and film screenings, will take place across London's boroughs in libraries, bookshops, cinemas and stations. Between 6 and 11 August 2011, thousands of people rioted in several London boroughs and in cities and towns across England

libraries. Now in its fifth year, Cityread London has previously been based on works by Charles Dickens, Sebastian Faulks, Louisa Young and Ben Aaronovitch. "We're thrilled to be working with Canongate on a newly released title for the first time, with such a talented and high profile author," said Andy Ryan, founding director of Cityread London. Redbridge Libraries have a full programme of literary events planned for April. There will be talks and family and teen workshops based on the themes of Ten Days: community, protest and rebellion. If you missed Gillian's appearance at Wanstead Library (which was brought forward to the end of March) there are still opportunities to take part in the many events on offer during April across the borough. O

n the right-hand side till at Starbucks, where you can't possibly miss it, is a sign which, next to a photo of a woman and her son, asks you to support Laraine Fallows by sponsoring her marathon run in aid of Rethink (a sophisticated charity that not only helps over 60,000 people directly every year but, by changing attitudes and policies, helps millions more). It says she works at Smile in London dental practice just around the corner, so I went off to find her (and of course, being me, I went the wrong way around the block). Clearly popular with colleagues and patients alike, this dental nurse started running when she was 46 years old because she wanted to run the Race For Life to commemorate her mother and father, both of whom had died of cancer. Developing her fitness from her first run (which she says lasted about 38 seconds) to the 5K run took just five months and she has clearly not looked back. That was when Laraine discovered how much she loves running, but just running for fitness was not enough. Now she always has to aim for something, so finds a charity to support for whatever she does. One friend lost her daughter to multiple sclerosis at just 21 years of age, so she raised money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Her husband Ricky had a stroke, so she ran for the Stroke Association. Laraine has also run for Cancer Research, the St Francis Hospice, Breast Cancer Care and this time is raising money for Rethink.

April 2016 team at Starbucks think the world of her and have not just put up the fundraising sign but have also let her put a collection tin there (supplementing the money in it with their own tips, which I'll tell you more about soon) and treat her as extended family. Because of this it's hardly surprising that she met and made a good friend while running. She says the friend often gets her into trouble, calling to say: "Shall we do the Brighton Marathon" or "Shall we do a triathlon next?" You need a bicycle to do a triathlon, and when Laraine went on Facebook asking if she could borrow somebody's bike to train and compete with, one lady gave her a bike she said she wasn't using. Because the lady refused to take money for it, Laraine promised to raise money for a charity of her choice and she chose Rethink. Her mother, who passed away at a very young age, had lived with schizophrenia, so Laraine and her son James are running the marathon in her memory.

57 son as they last left James' osteopath: "I'm 5'3" and James is 6'3", so as he watched us running away James' osteopath laughed to see my many little short steps and his big long steps together." It's a contrast that clearly works. I took this photo of Laraine and Ricky on their wedding anniversary and I would like to wish them many more happy and healthy ones to come.

Laraine, who runs in to Wanstead every day from Stratford, told me how generous the people of Wanstead have been. This isn't just about donating and raising money, but businesses, including Majestic Wines, Daisy Flowers, The Orange Tree, Azura, The Larder and Lillies of Wanstead, have donated raffle prizes, and the Starbucks staff (the people, not the business) have been wonderful too. I asked Laraine's husband Ricky if he had any funny stories to relate for the article. He supports her wholeheartedly but insisted that this is a serious matter: "It's about pain and discipline and occasionally injuries, but being positive about things too." That's me told, so I'll leave you with how Laraine described herself and her For more information and to sponsor Laraine and James, visit wavidi.com/fallows Starbucks is located at 56A to 58 High Street, Wanstead and Smile in London is located at 19 Cambridge Park, Wanstead. Serious about play As Wanstead's young residents await the installation of their new playground, Jo Blackman updates us on a similar campaign that has been running since October 2014 in Aldersbrook © Wanstead and Woodford Guardian

I

t's been a busy 18 months of campaigning for myself and other members of the Aldersbrook Playground Campaign since our campaign launched to secure a space in Wanstead Park for the installation of a natural play area. We've had numerous meetings with councillors, our MP and local groups, and we've had stalls at Music in the Park, the local church and school. We've also spoken to many families and local residents and been strengthened by the support we've had from the local community – over 400 signatures on our petition and counting.

Campaigners gathered in Wanstead Park last year

We've heard parents share their experiences of what a difference a local playground in Aldersbrook would make to them: that they don't want to get in a car or take the bus, sit in traffic and add to congestion every time they want to visit a playground; that they appreciate the excellent play facilities provided in other boroughs and would like the same opportunities for children in Aldersbrook to build their physical confidence and social skills.

plan and we are waiting for the City of London to decide how they will proceed – whether they want to fund this work themselves or submit a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund, who have indicated that they would be receptive to this. The council leadership and John Cryer MP have made it clear that they want to see the plan become a reality – ideally utilising funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund – and that natural play equipment should feature.

We've also heard concerns that a playground could become a site for anti-social behaviour and be an eyesore. We hope that natural play equipment sited in an incongruous site designed to minimise opportunities for anti-social behaviour will allay concerns.

Recent evidence shows that children play less outdoors and that childhood obesity rates are a cause for serious concern. By introducing natural play equipment in our local area we hope to encourage more children to explore the natural environment and get active.

We are grateful that Redbridge councillors and the council leadership have supported our campaign, met with local families and looked around the area with us. One year on from the launch of our petition, Leader of Redbridge Council, Councillor Jas Athwal, announced that Redbridge would be willing to cover the maintenance costs of a playground.

Redbridge's announcement on maintenance and the opportunity of funding through the parkland plan process give us hope that natural play equipment could finally become a reality in Wanstead Park. However, there is still some way to go. We are working with Friends of Wanstead Parklands to ensure that the views of local families are heard as the parkland plan process moves forward. We hope to have more positive news to report soon.

The City of London Corporation, which owns the green space surrounding Aldersbrook, has been consulting on the future of Wanstead Park, currently on English Heritage's At Risk Register. A parkland plan has been developed that sets out various options and designs for work on the park. Natural play equipment now features in this

White van, wrong van? It is easy to make assumptions when it comes to 'white vans' and to view them – often wrongly – in a suspicious light, says PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhoods Team

I

t is good to keep an eye out for old white vans that frequent areas just to look around, but van drivers are more often than not owned by legitimate workers, and are as much at risk of becoming a victim of crime as anyone else on the road. Vans and minibuses are a target for theft as much as any other vehicle that has a secondhand value. They are either stolen to order and shipped abroad or given a new identity and sold on. Losing a vehicle is not nice for anyone, but when it is involved with your livelihood, it could cost you a lot more. If you own a van then please bear in mind additional security measures, such as trackers, wheel locks or using a locking post when parking overnight, even in hotel car parks if you are away for work. It is also important to know your VIN number. Think about using livery on your van, advertising your company, as this would make the van stand out and make it much less attractive to criminals. Etching valuable car parts on your van, or marking them with a permanent marker or traceable liquid, are all recommended to prevent your car parts from being stolen. Fixing a cage for the catalytic converter is also helpful as these are often targeted for theft. Anti-tamper screws are a great way to prevent your number plates being taken. However, the number one item stolen from a van is tools. Please do not leave them in your van overnight, and be sure to write down serial numbers belonging to each tool and register them at immobilise.com. People leave scrap metal outside their houses, encouraging vans to come to the area and take it off their hands. Scrap metal can be sold on for a lot of money. Unfortunately, the value of scrap metal does also attract criminals, who will take items that are not screwed down or retrieve items out of a skip. Changes in the law means that scrap metal dealers must not receive any scrap items without verifying a name and address. They must not buy scrap for cash and must hold a licence issued by the council. Vans need a specific type of insurance to collect scrap as it is not covered by standard business

insurance. Please bear this in mind when leaving unsecured metal items outside your house. If a vehicle is taxed, insured and parked within the accordance of the regulations of the street and the Highway Code, then police have no authority to remove it, even if it is being used to run a business. Some streets have weight restrictions, but this is to stop artic-lorries and does not cover standard vans. Information on a vehicle's tax status can be found on the DVLA website for free. It is also worth knowing that a vehicle cannot just park anywhere to make a delivery, restrictions still apply. Moreover, a delivery driver is not exempt from wearing a seat belt unless they are driving a goods vehicle that is travelling no more than 50 metres between stops to make deliveries. If you believe a van you have seen is stolen, please call 101 where you will be asked for the location of the van and its make, model, colour and registration number. A stolen vehicle is a police issue; an abandoned vehicle is a council issue. Some indications of an abandoned vehicle are flat tyres, broken windows or the fact the vehicle has not moved for two or more weeks. A police contact point is located at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. For more information, call 020 8345 2832

Marvel at the art Michele Redgrave from Images in Frames takes a look at the work of London artist Ben Jeffery, who will be opening an exhibition of his work at the Wanstead gallery this month

I

t's not often you come across an artist who has the ability to paint all styles exceptionally well – but that describes the art of Ben Jeffery. Growing up in north London, Ben discovered at a young age he had a gift for art. His grandfather introduced him to the art of John Varley, an ancestor of Ben's, who was a famous watercolour painter. With a creative family supporting Ben, it is no wonder he was drawing the moment he could hold a pencil, experimenting and creating. As a teenager he couldn't wait for his art projects at school so he could bring them back the next day to see everyone's reaction. It was in high school that Ben found confidence as an artist when he and his friends decided to have a contest to see who could draw the best portrait of Michael Jackson. Can you guess who won that competition hands down? Ben subsequently embarked on a lesson-filled journey to develop his own style and gain his own place on the UK art scene. Although Ben has studied art to degree level, his technique is mostly self-taught. His style has evolved mainly through trial and error, trying new ways of controlling the paint. After attaining his degree Ben worked as an art consultant, which confirmed his own belief in himself. He took six months off to paint and see how far he could go and we are very glad he did. Now Ben is in his fifth year as a professional artist with a clear commitment to his craft. His portraits, landscapes and seascapes adorn many homes and galleries. Recently, Ben was approached by the CEO of Boxes in the USA and was fortunate enough to be commissioned to paint a portrait of the Marvel creator Stan Lee with his most famous character creations surrounding him. This portrait is now hanging in Stan Lee's home; if there ever was a career boost for an artist this was it. But there is one piece of art of which Ben is most proud: his grandfather's portrait, the man who was inspirational to Ben's start as a flourishing artist.

Ben's portrait of his grandfather

Marvel creator Stan Lee

Ben believes that you need to love what you do and his happiness as an artist is centred on his choice of constantly changing things up. "You need to do whatever it takes to keep everything fresh and not get bored, because if you do it will reflect in your work as an artist," he says. Ben has tried his hand at digital painting and wasn't too bad at it either, but found that paint has a feel and depth which just can't be replaced. Over the years Ben has regularly switched from painting portraits to seascapes and landscapes and from murals to action figures, all in his desire to keep that creative edge. We at Images in Frames are very pleased to be showcasing the work of this highly talented artist and know you too will enjoy his diverse style, technique and creativity. An exhibition of Ben's work will take place at Images in Frames from 1 to 8 May, with a personal appearance on 30 April (invitation only). The gallery is located at 71 High Street, Wanstead. Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the 13th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Bob Gibbons explains why those new to photography should focus on a specific area of interest

I

© Bob Gibbons

took up photography 30-odd years ago when I bought an Olympus OM10 film camera, probably influenced by the adverts David Bailey was doing at that time in the early 1980s. I got hooked pretty early on and decided to learn as much as I could about photography. I quickly converted my loft into a darkroom so that I could develop my own film and experience the joy and magic of black and white printing. I really had a great time working in just the light of the safe lamp, watching the image magically appear in the tray whilst listening to Benny Green on the radio, playing records from the 1940s and 1950s American Songbook and relating anecdotes of the great songwriters who contributed to it. I cherish that memory. My business career didn't allow me as much time as I would have liked to pursue my interest, but over time I did build up a sound knowledge of photography, which in later years, when I had more time to invest, would pay dividends. Every person has great potential for creativity but it does take time in most of us to develop. My advice to anybody new to photography is to join a club (preferably ours), mix with other photographers and settle on one area of interest. You may take other pictures, but major on a chosen principle area. Study the great photographers of that genre, go on courses and workshops and build a solid base. This will allow you to progress more quickly and avoid frustration. You will succeed much earlier than if you use a scatter gun approach as I did in my early days. In 2009 my picture Waterjet Handstand was exhibited at the London Salon of Photography. In 2014 I was awarded the distinction of Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS) and I am about to submit a panel of flower photographs to the Society in order to achieve the higher distinction of Associate. If successful, I hope to hold a local exhibition of my work.

From painting live during the BBC's coverage of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee to teaching adult art classes in Southend, Paul Alcock is an experienced and accomplished artist. This month he will be demonstrating his line and wash techniques at Wanstead House

rawing from observation is really at the heart of what I do as an artist and so I try and get as much practice in as I can. I mainly practice in my sketchbooks, and over the last few years, working with pens has become my favourite sketching medium. I was impressed at a young age by David Hockney's line drawings and I remember reading how he just went straight for a finished line without drawing in pencil first – if he made any mistakes he would just live with them. Later on I saw drawings by Van Gogh and I was equally impressed by the range of graphic marks he used and how different thicknesses of line could suggest distance. I decided to draw more or less exclusively with pen about 10 years ago and for these types of sketches I never draw with pencils first. Part of the reason for this is speed, but drawing in this way has also really helped me develop my concentration and I've learned to live with the mistakes. I find that as long as most of the lines are in the right place, a few wobbles don't matter that much and, at the end of the day, it's just a piece of paper! I'd previously been drawing with pencils but I was finding they were smudging easily and I'd also grown tired of the appearances of my sketches. I was particularly unhappy with pencil as a way of suggesting tonal values. I initially explored different types of pen, such as dipper pens with bottles of liquid ink and then ballpoint pens. These all have some lovely qualities but for me a fine liner felt pen, such as the ones produced by Uni Pin, were the ones I kept coming back to, probably because they were so convenient. I enjoy the feel of drawing with a felt pen, and the slight drag you get with this type of pen helps me to control the line. They also fit nicely into my bag and the fact they don't need any sharpening or fixing just adds to their appeal.

the line

Straight down

For the first couple of years I rather liked the qualities of just drawing with lines and then one day, I came across sketches by Adebanji Alade and other urban sketchers, and I realised how much richer they could look with a bit of tone or colour. I then started to experiment with brush-type felt pens.

To start with I tried a couple of different makes of pens, but the ones I liked best were a make called Tom Bow. These give me a good range of tones and are easy to use. I generally use no more than four pens, which is about as many as I can hold in one hand whilst also supporting my A4-sized sketchbook. I use Tom Bow pen numbers N75, N55 and N35, which are all different tones of grey, as well as a 0.3 Uni Pin. I occasionally sketch on toned paper and then draw in highlights with a pastel pencil or a piece of chalk. Tom Bow pens are water-soluble, but unfortunately they're not fadeproof, so it's best not to expose them to a strong light source once they're finished. I usually start my drawings with the smaller, more complicated areas. I start with the fine lines, but I don't have a fixed approach. On occasions I'll start with tone or I may alternate between line and tone. It rather depends on what I'm drawing and what the subject itself suggests. If I'm drawing a person I would probably start with the eyes and work outwards from there, and if it's a street scene I would start with something like a small building or window in the distance and then gradually work to the foreground, drawing whatever my eye meets on the way. As well as sketching in pen, I also paint using oils on location whenever the opportunity arises. I live in Southend-on-Sea where I split my time between teaching art to adults and painting. I exhibit my work each year in the Leigh Art Trail and for the past couple of years I've also had an exhibition at Miss Annabel Dee Gallery in Leighon-Sea.

0466 ...and counting Members of the Wren Wildlife Group are hoping to find 1,000 different kinds of plants and animals in the Wanstead area during 2016. Chair Tim Harris reports on last month's highlights and the count so far

O

Pretty much all the resident birds have been found, unsurprisingly given the very strong team of birders who live locally. In mid-March Wanstead Park's first spring lesser spotted woodpecker for several years was heard singing at the north end of the Ornamental Water. It will be interesting to see whether this scarce and enigmatic little woodpecker (it's only just bigger than a sparrow) will find a mate and breed in the park. With the exception of a few wheatears and sand martins, however, the spring's migrant birds won't appear until this month. Although we can predict more or less accurately the week that our first willow warbler, swallow and whinchat will turn up, the exact date of their respective arrivals will be determined by weather conditions here and further south. In the main, the 'miscellaneous others' – the battalions of butterflies, moths, dragonflies, bugs, beetles, bees and flies – have yet to enter the fray. Of course, a few warm, sunny days are enough to tempt these out of their hiding places or out of their cocoons. And that is what happened briefly in mid-March, as Rose Stephens commented: "The solitary bees are coming out now, as well as a trickle of hoverflies. Male Andrena bees emerge first, but they are very hard to identify." A few more moths began to appear in light traps around our area, including the appropriately named March moth.

Late February and early March is a difficult time to make new discoveries. Most of the readily identifiable plants – trees and shrubs, and those plants that flower early – have already been seen and noted, and spring's emergent beauties are yet to appear. An area of apparently dull grassland can transform into a kaleidoscope of different coloured flowers overnight in April. But that metamorphosis hasn't taken place yet.

ne thousand species of flora and fauna in Wanstead? Not seriously? Well, actually, yes. We are attempting to find as many different plants and animals as we can locally during 2016 – and we are confident the figure will run into four figures.

It's worth being vigilant – and careful – in the garden at this time of year. Several people have recently reported seeing frogspawn in their gardens. When I was cleaning out the sludge in the bottom of a small garden pond I found a pair of smooth newts, and when I took the lawnmower on its first outing of spring I found another very sleepy newt in the grass. Watch out for hibernating hedgehogs, too! At the time of going to press, March's finds brought the total score to 466 species, made up of 194 plants, 133 invertebrates, 91 birds, 9 other vertebrates, 33 fungi and 6 miscellaneous others.
