Welcome... Wanstead will be host to several special guests this month and next as the 2011 Redbridge Book and Media Festival begins a six week programme of performances, screenings and author events. There is a varied, borough-wide schedule, but with plenty happening at Wanstead, Aldersbrook and South Woodford libraries and Wanstead House, you shouldn’t have to travel far to find something of interest. Perhaps the highlight of the festival in Wanstead this month will be Larry Lamb – better known as Archie or Mick to millions of EastEnders and Gavin & Stacey fans respectively – who will be answering questions about his autobiography at an event at the library on 26 April. Larry was kind enough to answer a few of my own questions about his life, both before and after his acting career took off, and you can read what he had to say on pages 12-13 where you will also find details of how you can win a signed copy of his book. One of Larry’s talents is that he’s a good communicator, something which, along with his event-filled life, makes his story a compelling read and, I’m sure, will make for an enjoyable evening of insight and entertainment. Other art forms are also covered this month. Two local flower clubs are encouraging you to explore the world of floral arrangements (see page 38) and the local Rock Choir are inviting you to sing pop, gospel and Motown songs with them (see pages 26-27). All this, combined with the news that Art Group Wanstead have secured funding from Redbridge Council to go towards staging the area’s second art trail (see page 6), shows that support for, and interest in, the arts is strong in Wanstead. With a late Easter, an early May bank holiday and a royal wedding to look forward to, this month will also see two consecutive four-day weekends, widespread celebrations, street parties and other festivities in honour of the royal union – a great opportunity to gather with friends and neighbours to mark the occasion.

Money in the bank for artists as group secures funding

At an Area One committee meeting last month councillors agreed a to give £1,489 towards the £4,000 cost of the 16-day trail, which will take place in September. It will be run by the newly formed Art Group Wanstead, which was established out of the success of last year’s trail where over 200 local artists exhibited.

The money will be used to print 3,000 booklets for the trail and to cover indemnity insurance. Group founder Donna Mizzi said: “We hope to get the rest of the money from other grants and sponsorship. This is going to be a fantastic event for businesses to sponsor and have their names associated with a huge community event.” The group have also been organising art and craft fairs and ongoing exhibitions at The George, on Wanstead High Street.

Wanstead artists have been given a Redbridge Council grant which will be used to help fund the area’s second art trail later this year.

School film club success

Marathon man

Wanstead High School was nominated as Film Club of the year last month with pupils attending the First Light Movie Awards at the Odeon, Leicester Square.

Snaresbrook Primary School teacher Andrew Wilkins will be running the London Marathon this month to raise money for Cancer Research UK. “My mum died of cancer after a three week illness last year and I realised that the best way to cope with grief was to get out and about and do sporty things. We had a non-uniform day at school, a cake sale and a raffle. The children and parents have been really supportive“ explained Andrew.

The school was nominated with just two other schools out of the 7,000 who are members. The awards were hosted by TV presenter Nick Grimshaw and attended by a mix of celebrities. Film Club is an educational charity which helps schools set up and run successful film clubs.

Meet Larry Lamb Ahead of his appearance at Wanstead Library this month, Larry Lamb talks to the Wanstead Village Directory about his newly published autobiography, Mummy’s Boy. Interview by Lee Marquis Your life story is punctuated by a seemingly endless array of new jobs and new homes. How difficult was it to recall all those events? In a funny way that made it easier because everything sets itself up chronologically. My life has been like a journey with a schedule, making it easy to recall because there has been an order to it. Before becoming an actor you held a variety of jobs in several different countries around the world. Did you always have a desire to travel? Yes, one of the positive things my father gave me was a wanderlust. I wanted to discover a world out there that wasn’t laid at my feet. I also had an instinct for foreign languages. Once you’ve learned what it feels like to be able to communicate with people in a another language it opens up an area of your mind that makes it easier to master other languages. I like an element of control in my life and the only way I can have any sense of control in a foreign country is if I speak the language. It was in Germany that you found a passion for acting in amateur theatre. Was that something you always wanted to get involved with? I had absolutely no idea of anything to do with acting at all. Somebody just said to me ‘you should be an actor’ and it wasn’t until I moved to Canada that I decided I wanted to make a career out of it. When you became a professional actor in Canada you left a very well paid job in the oil business. Was this a difficult decision? I was 27 and in terms of somebody who set out to become successful in some sort of business, starting from zero, I was doing incredibly well and I had a job for life. In theory I had everything I wanted: I owned a house; I owned an apartment; and I was making a huge salary. But I was at the beck and call of a company. I had worked myself into a situation that I had imagined I always wanted, but when I got it I realised it wasn’t what I wanted after all.

Larry with his son, George Lamb

Your film and TV credits are varied. Do any of them particularly stand out for you? No, they all make up a part of the tapestry of my life. It’s all about the people you meet along the way, it’s not really about the things you’re doing. Sometimes you work on something really memorable, but a lot of what makes it memorable is the people you are working with. I’ve run into an extraordinary cast of characters during my life. One of those characters you have met was Muhammad Ali. How was that? It was a completely random event and he was the first famous person I ever ran into. With great confidence I bounced across the room to him and he turned around and started sparring up to me.

April 2011 Would you say you have had a lot of luck in your career? If you don’t have luck you ain’t got a career! You have no control over the opportunities that are going to present themselves and it’s how you deal with them when they do come along that denotes how your life will run. I came into this business with a modicum of talent and I was very lucky to get the breaks that I got. You played Bruce Reynolds, one of the Great Train Robbers, in the 1988 film Buster. What are your memories of getting that role? It was rather strange because I had read about the fact that Phil Collins was going to be doing a film about the Great Train Robbery, but because I had already done a film on the subject – where I played Ronnie Biggs – I thought there was no way I was going to get the job. Next thing I knew, I was on a plane back to London to do a screen test and to act out a couple of scenes with Phil. The EastEnders character Archie Mitchell is perhaps the role you are most famous for. Were you worried about becoming typecast? I’d always been wary about getting involved with long running television series, purely and simply because they can take over your life. So if you are trying to develop a career as an actor it can overshadow that and you become known as the character. But if you’ve had a career and you’ve got yourself a name as an actor, then chances are you can come out the other side and still be you, which in the end, I feel, turned out to be the case for me. It has been reported that Archie was based on your own father. Can you expand on that? All I said to a journalist about three years ago was that my father had been a part of the formation of that character – its an amalgam: it’s life; my father; my uncle; my grandfather; and people I’ve worked for, all rolled up into one.

Before Archie, you became well known for playing Mick Shipman in Gavin & Stacey. Were you aware of the potential for that show from the beginning? To be involved in a comedy series is a great plus in your career. I knew it was very well written, but I needed to get into it and be the character. At first the subtle style of comedy eluded me a bit, but gradually, as I got familiar with it, it took me over. Where will we see you next, on stage, on our TV screens or in Hollywood? I’m going to be doing something for the BBC, copresenting a programme with Lesley Garrett, about the history of royal weddings. Apart from that I have no specific plans. You will be visiting Wanstead this month with an appearance at the library. What can we expect from this event? It will be an interview. An actress colleague of mine, Roberta Taylor, will be asking me questions about the book. Mummy’s Boy, by Larry Lamb, is out now published by Coronet, £1699 Larry will be speaking about the book at Wanstead Library on Tuesday 26 April at 715pm To book tickets visit www.redbridge.gov.uk/bam or call 020 8552 9993

Sunshine, pay the bills Just under a year ago the Government introduced the feed-in energy tariffs, designed to encourage homeowners to use small scale renewable energy systems. Ben Saunders of SoGoSolar explains the benefits of installing one such system – solar photovoltaic (PV) panels

L

ast year PricewaterhouseCoopers predicted that the market for domestic microgeneration schemes would grow 30 fold by 2015. This optimism would appear to be on track – in the first six months of the scheme OFGEM reported that over 10,000 solar PV systems had been installed. So why all the excitement? Well it’s a combination of increasing anxiety over rising fuel bills and a desire to be more energy self sufficient and sustainable. The most significant factor, however, is probably the feed-in-tariff (FIT). The FIT pays householders up to 41.3p for every unit of energy generated by a PV system retrofitted to an existing property. What’s more it does not matter whether you use this energy or put it back into the grid (for which you receive additional income). This income is also tax free, index linked to the Retail Prices Index and guaranteed for 25 years from date of commissioning under legislation passed in 2010. “Well what’s the catch?” I hear you ask. There is no catch, however, systems are not cheap to install – between £7,000 - £15,000 depending on the size. Those choosing to take the plunge should recover their investment after approximately 10 years and then continue to benefit thereafter. Some may find this a much more attractive option than leaving cash in the bank at today’s miserable interest rates. In terms of energy self sufficiency, a PV system can generate up to approximately 40% of a households electricity consumption. Another way to look at this is that the income generated can, if sensible energy conservation measures are adopted, come very close to meeting both electricity and gas bills for small properties. So lets put some real numbers around this. I have just designed and installed a modest 1.2kW system (comprising five panels) at a two bed flat in Leytonstone, which will pay back in around 10 years. In terms of cash generation this is equivalent to meeting approximately 80% of the property’s gas and electricity bills.

So in spite of our (often) cloudy weather, the introduction of the FIT now means that PV systems are, for many homeowners, probably the most attractive of all the renewable energy systems on the market. Properties best suited to PV installations are those with a south(ish) facing roof that is not shaded by trees or other properties during the critical 6 hours either side of midday. Properties with an east-west split roof are also suitable, however, they do receive approximately 15% less solar radiation than south facing roofs. So what should you look for in an installer? To benefit from the FIT your installer must be MicroCertification Scheme (MCS) accredited and the panels they install must themselves be MCS approved. Additionally you or your installer should carry out a structural survey to confirm that the roof structure is adequate for the additional loads that will be placed upon it. Finally, for listed properties or those in a conservation area, planning consent will need to be sought. In all other cases the installation does not usually require planning permission. For more information on solar PV systems and other renewable energy options, together with advice on how to reduce energy consumption, please visit the energy savings trust web site at www.energysavingtrust.org.uk

As members of the Wanstead Rock Choir prepare for their performance at the London Marathon this month, Jo Spouncer talks to local choir leader Christina Dmytryk and looks at what is encouraging thousands of people from across the UK to sing every week

U

nlike the usual church choirs or classical choral groups, Rock Choir sings feel-good rock, pop, gospel and Motown songs. It was started in 2005 by Caroline Redman Lusher, the pioneer of the contemporary choir, and since then has experienced extraordinary growth. There are now 150 weekly Rock Choir rehearsals nationwide in 90 towns and many more will be opened from September. Wanstead Rock Choir originally started in Woodford in September 2009, moved to Wanstead in January 2011 and has attracted nearly 150 members. While many people have been in the local Rock Choir from the start, the members are not what you would call experienced singers when they first join. The ethos is that anyone can join, so unlike other choirs which require you to read music or audition,

to join Rock Choir you just come along for a free taster session to see if you like it. No-one is ever made to sing alone and the way Christina teaches makes it very easy to learn the songs. She sings a line and the choir sings it back to her, repeating it until the notes and rhythm are firmly in mind. The tunes are immediately recognisable and familiar as they cover great feel good anthems such as ‘Something inside so Strong’ and ‘Dancing in the Street’ or Abba’s hits. Many people have grown up listening to these songs and feel a connection with them as they bring back happy memories from their past. Bill Hampshire joined the local Rock Choir with his wife Angie last September. He is among the few who does have experience in singing as he spent over 35 years on the road with function bands as a drummer. He thought his performing

April 2011 days were over and says it is great to be out there doing it again. “We made our debut performance in December at St. Pancras Station, which was just amazing to be in front of the crowds again. Then, just before Christmas, we performed at Trafalgar Square and I will never forget that windswept and rainy night at the foot of the Christmas tree. We all huddled together to keep warm in our plastic macs, then as we sang suddenly something quite magical happened and the rain turned to snow. With the Christmas lights and crowds looking on it was a very special moment.” Now the Wanstead Rock Choir are looking forward to their next gig at the London Marathon on 17 April – invited back after a successful show last year when their performance brought smiles to the runners’ faces during the last gruelling miles of the event. They will be performing four 30 minute sets at Canary Wharf to encourage the runners to keep going. But it doesn’t always run smoothly, last year they had problems with the PA system and it was also freezing cold. Christina recalls: “The night before there was a last minute rescheduling of our performance and so I had to call 150 members to get them to arrive an hour earlier. That was a panic so I hope it runs more smoothly this year.” The support from family and friends is also very important to members, who for some it is the first time they are singing (and dancing) in public. One member, Annette Macaluso, sang at the Marathon last year and her whole family came to see her perform. She said: “It meant so much to me to see them in the audience on that wet and cold drizzly day, waving and cheering, with my granddaughters singing and dancing along to the Abba medley.” Annette, like many other Rock Choir members, had not sung since she was a child. After she left school she always dreamed of taking singing up again but never had the courage. When she had a family and career there was never enough time to try anything new. Now, in her early 50’s, she has discovered Rock Choir and it is part of her life and gives her a buzz that lasts all week. “After all those years wishing I could sing, I don’t know what happened but something inside me wanted to scream and shout with excitement when I saw Rock Choir first on TV and then in a magazine. I just felt I had found ‘it’ and couldn’t wait for the first taster session. I just love being part of the group, it is so easy to follow with the help of our fantastic choir leader Christina.” Christina’s experience and qualifications are impressive so novice singers are in safe hands.

Christina has the highest classical music qualifications from the Royal Academy of Music and a degree in Popular Music Performance. She has also worked with world-renowned musicians, including Damon Albarn from Gorillaz and Blur. With a vibrant and charismatic teaching style the members love her fun sessions. “We always look forward to our rehearsals every week and have so much fun, there’s lots of camaraderie and laughter. I admire the choir for their dedication to come to performances whatever the weather, even if it is raining, snowing or just freezing cold. I am always there waiting for them and I am filled with pride when I see their smiling faces as they arrive” says Christina. After the Marathon, Wanstead Rock Choir’s next big show, believe it or not, is at Wembley Arena on 15 May. Every single Rock Choir across the nation – totalling over 7,000 singers – has been invited to perform at this prestigious venue. Bill added: “We will soon all be singing our hearts out and strutting our stuff at The Wembley Arena no less, heady stuff indeed – Rock Choir rocks!” For further information or to join Rock Choir visit www.rockchoir.com or telephone 01252 714276. Making Arrangements If you are passionate about flowers then NAFAS is the place for you, explains Karen Davies-James and Jan Law from the Woodford & District Floral Arrangement Group and Pam Ford from the Leyton and Wanstead Flower Club

N

AFAS is the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies. There are 48 clubs in the London and overseas area (plus 25 more around the world) – and there are several near you. Two of your local clubs are the Leyton and Wanstead Flower Club and the Woodford & District Floral Arrangement Group. Both were founded over 50 years ago and still have a thriving and flourishing membership. We meet once a month where our members enjoy seeing flowers arranged by NAFAS trained demonstrators and have a chance to chat. If you wish to delve further into this wonderful art world then we also run workshops and courses on related subjects and can provide information on events happening locally and nationally. Both our clubs take part in floral art shows; get invited to arrange flowers in exciting places; have won medals at the Chelsea Flower Show, at Area and National Flower Shows and at the Royal Horticultural Society shows. The Leyton and Wanstead Flower Show takes place this month on Saturday 16 April at Christ Church Hall from 2pm. There will of course be flowers plus a raffle and refreshments. You should also look out for examples of our floral work at various venues in Leyton, Wanstead and Woodford in the first week of May. Friday 6 May is National Flower Arrangers Day and to promote this we will be placing attractive arrangements in strategic places in the community. Why not come along to one of our club meetings? Relax, sit back, enjoy your evening and maybe go home with flowers you have won in the regular raffle. You will be assured of a warm welcome. Turn to page 60 for more details of the two clubs.

To make flowers last longer zz Use a clean vase zz Use flower food which prevents bacteria zz Re-cut the stems on a slant (they will have dried on the way home)

To revive your roses zz If the heads droop, roll the bunch in newspaper, exposing the stems zz Plunge the stem ends into an inch of boiling water for 30 seconds zz Then put them into cold water until turgid

Hunting Easter's Eggs Although the Easter weekend is the principal religious feast of the Christian year, most of its traditions have no basis in Christianity at all

T

he Jewish festival of Passover is closely linked to Easter by dates and symbolism. Passover, also known as Pesach, was celebrated long before the birth of Jesus. Before Easter was used as a name for this holiday, early Christians celebrated ‘Pascha’, a word derived from Pesach. The word ‘Easter’ comes from an Anglo-Saxon fertility goddess called Eostre, who was associated with spring and new beginnings. Both Easter and Passover centre around re-birth, and bond neatly with the Anglo-Saxon festival of ‘Eostre-monath’ – Eostre’s month.

This article is only available in the printed edition

Hot cross buns, traditionally eaten on Good Friday, are linked to Passover. Originally they were unleavened bread, an important Passover food. Nowadays, they are more palatably leavened and marked with a cross to serve as a reminder of the crucifixion.

But where does the tradition of eating chocolate eggs come from? In the times of Eostre, eggs were given as gifts to celebrate the end of winter and as a symbol of new life. And need I mention the fertility characteristic of an egg? A traditional dish at a Passover meal is Beitzah, a hardboiled egg to represent life. All this evolved into Christians decorating the shells with colourful patterns, and then moved onto our familiar, delicious chocolate Easter eggs. Well, that’s the eggs worked out. But an Easter bunny? A rabbit that lays eggs? Not to mention the need for these eggs to be hunted for and rolled down a hill. Well, the origin of the rabbit isn’t too hard to decipher. We go back to the goddess Eostre again. Her sacred animal was the hare. Rabbits are similar to hares and rather more common. Therefore the two creatures became interchangeable. And of course rabbits are wellknown for their prolificacy – so I’m afraid we’re back to fertility symbolism again. The Easter Bunny and egg hunts seem to have started in Germany in the 16th century. Children

made nests in the garden and, if they were good, the Easter Bunny would leave them coloured hardboiled eggs to find the next morning. This tradition travelled to America with early German settlers and, like many old traditions, has now returned to Britain substituting chocolate eggs and a more interesting egg hunt. Egg rolling on Easter Monday is a strange old custom that is said to represent the rolling away of the stone blocking Jesus’ tomb. Also known as Pace-Egging, derived from the word Pesach, it has been fun for centuries, but nobody is sure why. Perhaps it originated as a way of getting everyone out of the house for some much-needed exercise after a long weekend of feasting.
