The Bradbury Foundation awards first grants to regional charitable initiatives.
The Bradbury Foundation is delighted to have awarded the first three grants following applications received for financial support. The successful projects are being run by Grimsby in Bloom, Happy Days Children’s Charity and the Grimsby Carers Support Service.
The Foundation received seven initial applications for grant support. Trustee Carrie Jensen said, “As a new charity, we are raising funds with the aim of supporting as many local projects and initiatives that we can that will create a lasting impact for the communities in which we work and live. Forrester Boyd host a number of events through the year which raise funds for the foundation which is amazing. We do at the moment however have limited funds so can only support a small number of projects each time we review them.”
Three projects were selected in this round of funding. The Grimsby In Bloom project is a community focussed initiative that has been running since 2016 in the West Marsh area of Grimsby. The project that the Bradbury Foundation is supporting will help to install a series of interpretation boards around a new area they will be opening adjacent to the River Freshney. These boards will provide educational information about the wildlife found on the site whilst championing environmental sustainability. Elaine Atkinson commented, “As chair of Grimsby in Bloom I would like to say that the money we have received will go towards purchasing 2 interpretation boards for our new nature area. They will enable all visitors to identify any wildlife/insects we have on site. Hopefully the children will learn so much from this and it will
encourage them to have deeper knowledge and respect as to what is in our natural environment.”
Another project that trustees selected is being run by the Happy Days Children’s Charity. This project will support two women’s refuges in East and West Lindsey, providing a day trip for a number of children and their Mum’s who are currently living in safe refuge. These families, due to their circumstance have had very little life and leisure experiences so these trips will provide much needed respite and help to improve their mental and physical well-being.
Ryan Sinclair, Chief Executive of Happy Days Children’s Charity replied “We are extremely grateful to The Bradbury Foundation for their kind support, which will enable us to carry out various meaningful and memorable experiences for vulnerable young children. Our relationship stems from our mutual commitment to enhancing the lives of young vulnerable people in our community. These experiences will not only provide joy and excitement but also foster social interaction, sensory engagement, and emotional wellbeing, which are crucial for the holistic development of these children.”
The last of the three projects that was selected was the Grimsby Carers Support Service. The charity provide support, counselling and befriending to carers who are alone in
supporting and caring for a loved one. The grant will help with activities to bring these carers together to build relationships and a support network, much needed outside of their caring duties.
Carrie continued, “We look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition and hope to be able to support many more community projects over the coming months and years as the Foundation grows. We are always looking for ways to raise funds to support initiatives like these so if there are any businesses or individuals who would like to find out more about how they can help, then we would love to hear from them.”
Applications are open for grant funding support so whether you can help to raise much needed funds, or are wanting to apply for a grant, you can visit www. thebradburyfoundation.org for more information or email: hello@thebradburyfoundation.org.

New directors for key regional business organisation
Humber Marine and Renewables is entering the new financial year with a crew change.
Two new directors have been welcomed on board the regional trade organisation, where activities have been buoyed by the receipt of a significant grant from Maritime UK.
David Laister and Emma Lingard are now supporting the strategic direction, bringing strong communications acumen to the leadership team. The new directors have been appointed following the departure of Graham Billany, and former chair Iain Butterworth. Humber Marine and Renewables is in the process of appointing a new chair, as well as a business development manager, to help deliver the strategic plan that formed December’s successful bid.
David is no stranger to Humber Marine and Renewables, having hosted Offshore Wind Connections 2024 and extensively covered the sector’s happenings in an 18-year stint as a business journalist in the region. He is now PR and media director at Hull-based Fred Marketing, and had also served on the board of Grimsby Renewables Partnership (which in 2022 merged with Team Humber Marine Alliance to create Humber Marine & Renewables) between 2016 and 2019.
He said: “It is a pleasure to be involved in an organisation I’ve always had the utmost respect for, having supported the incredible events that bring key Humber businesses and industry leaders together.
“The devolution agenda playing out in 2025 underlines the importance of pan-Humber organisations to the business community, so I’m delighted to be on board.”
For the past three years Emma has worked for Associated British Ports as corporate communications manager for the four Humber ports. She had previously served Seafish in a similar role, and has also worked as a journalist in the region, including a stint on local television. Emma also leads guided history walks around northern Lincolnshire and delivers history talks. Her knowledge and media skills have led to appearances on Radio Four and Who Do You Think You Are? - which recently led to a Michael McIntyre parody.
Of her appointment, Emma said: “I’m delighted to join Humber Marine & Renewables as a non-executive director. The Humber region is at the forefront of the UK’s renewable energy revolution, and I’m excited to contribute my expertise to support its vision for sustainable growth and innovation.”
Mr Butterworth, a lawyer and marine engineer, was at the helm for the beginning of a new chapter for Humber Marine & Renewables, notably the repositioning to include North Yorkshire’s coastal communities,
Regional legal powerhouse launches April 2025
Two of Lincolnshire’s and Yorkshire’s leading law firms have merged on 1 April 2025.
Wilkin Chapman LLP and Rollits LLP have merged under the trading name of Wilkin Chapman Rollits. The new firm has more than 500 people including 70 partners and has a combined annual turnover of £40 million. It operates from six locations: Grimsby, Lincoln, Louth, Hull, York and Beverley. It is the largest law firm operating out of both Lincolnshire and Yorkshire and has a combined history of more than 300 years.
The merger has been market and client driven and the merged firm offers greater strength and depth to its clients across the commercial and public sectors and private client disciplines within its region and nationally. As part of the build up to the merger, both firms spoke to a number of their strategic commercial clients who are very supportive of the news. There are no planned redundancies as part of the merger.
the addition of the Humber Renewables Awards to the organisation’s event schedule and the recent funding win.
He said: “It was a good time to step down after overseeing a significant period of activity for Humber Marine & Renewables.
“We’ve truly come together as one voice for the region following the merger of Team Humber Marine Alliance and Grimsby Renewables Partnership, with clear recognition from government of further potential. I wish all well.”
Humber Marine & Renewables is now welcoming applications for the role of chair. Interested parties should email marygreen@ humber-marine-renewables.co.uk.
Offshore Wind Connections returns on April 30 with Humber Renewables Awards closing the conference and exhibition on the evening of May 1. For more information, tickets, and nominations, visit www.humber-marinerenewables.co.uk
Robin Simmonds, CEO of Wilkin Chapman Rollits, said: “There is a great synergy between the two firms across culture, values and strategy and we believe this new firm will provide our clients with the responsive, personal tailored support that they expect.”
Ralph Gilbert, former managing partner of Rollits and Integration partner, Wilkin
Chapman Rollits, said: “Both of our legacy firms have deep local connections and histories within our respective regions and are very proud of these links. Such links help us understand the needs of our clients and bring insights to them. Additionally, the new firm will continue to advise our regionally based clients with their needs nationally, as well as clients based outside of our locations.”

Why Relocation Support Matters: The Business Case for Human-Centred Moves
In today’s competitive landscape, attracting and retaining the right talent isn’t just about offering the best job — it’s about offering the best package and genuine support to employees.
As businesses expand across the Yorkshire and Humber region — from growing tech hubs in Leeds to large-scale infrastructure projects around the Humber estuary — employee relocation has become more than a logistical exercise. It’s a strategic investment in people.
Relocation isn’t simply about moving employees from one location to another. It’s about creating the conditions for people — and their families — to feel settled, supported, and ready to thrive from day one.
Every new role, every project assignment, every relocation is a moment of change — and often, challenge. People are leaving homes, routines, and communities behind. Companies that recognise this, and support it
properly, don’t just move employees — they create loyal ambassadors for their brand.
That’s where we, at Yorkshire & Humber Relocation come in.
We partner with businesses across industries — construction, manufacturing, energy, healthcare, tech, and professional services — to provide seamless, people-first relocation support across the region and beyond.
What makes us different isn’t just our regional expertise (although we know this part of the UK like the back of our hand). It’s our approach.
We listen. We care. We build trusted relationships with relocating employees and their families, providing the tailored, on-theground support they need — whether they’re moving to a city apartment in York, a family home in East Yorkshire or a country cottage in a rural village.
Relocation done well delivers real business impact:
• Reduced stress for employees
• Faster onboarding and productivity
• Higher retention rates
• Stronger employer brand
Put simply: when people feel looked after, they settle quicker, stay longer, and contribute more.
Whether it’s a single professional hire moving to Hull or an entire project team relocating to support infrastructure development in the Humber — we take care of the details so your people can focus on what matters: doing their best work.
Relocation isn’t just a service. It’s a strategic advantage.
At Yorkshire & Humber Relocation, we’re here to make it easy — for your people, and your business.
As the region’s premier employee mobility company, our services are proven to:
 Improve Employee Retention
 Ensure Employees Feel Valued

With large growth predicted in the UK offshore wind sector, Offshore Wind Connections 2025 is looking at the major opportunities for the Humber region to strengthen its role nationally and globally.
The leading two-day event in Hull hosted by Humber Marine & Renewables with headline sponsorship from RWE, has a packed programme that reflects the scale and diversity of the industry, with a mix of local, national and international voices set to take the stage.
Bringing together an impressive line-up of industry leaders, developers, infrastructure experts and supply chain specialists, it will focus on how the Humber can capitalise on the next phase of offshore wind development.
It takes place against the backdrop of the government’s ambitious targets for offshore wind growth and the Offshore Wind Industry Council’s recently launched Industrial Growth Plan which identifies a vast opportunity for supply chain expansion across the country.
OWC2025 comprises speaker and panel sessions, exhibition and high-level networking over two days on April 30 and May 1, with the Humber Renewables awards forming the grand finale.
It has attracted a raft of support from companies and organisations working across the fast-moving sector. With 11 sponsors confirmed, alongside nine supporters and media partners, the event which is in its 12th year, has attracted delegates from across the UK and internationally.
Andrew Oliver, chair of Humber Marine & Renewables, said that OWC2025 would provide the opportunity to step back and look at the bigger picture, both in the UK and internationally, and ask how the Humber can make the most of what’s coming.
“OWC2025 is being held at time of rapid growth and big ambitions. The Humber has already shown what’s possible
when industry, supply chain and local partners work together, and we will share intelligence so we can seize the opportunity to develop the Humber’s strength in the UK market and as a global player.”
Emma Toulson, the UK’s head of stakeholder relations at Ørsted who also plays a key role in at the Humber Offshore Wind Cluster, said it was a very interesting time for the industry. “The Industrial Growth Plan has identified huge potential for future supply chain development, and OWC2025 will explore what that means for the Humber cluster.
“This conference is about looking ahead and making sure we’re ready to take the next steps so we can continue to build a world-class offshore wind cluster here.”
The Humber Offshore Wind Cluster is a key supporter of OWC, along with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Council, The Supply Chain Network, and RenewableUK.
Once again, the conference’s headline sponsor is RWE with Ørsted taking the platinum spot, a reflection of the importance both companies place on the region where they are developing and operating globally significant offshore wind farms.
Gold sponsors include ABP, Andrew Jackson Solicitors, MMS Ship Repair, Pentagon, SES and Torque Solutions, while Silver sponsors include Humber Freeport and WindEnergy Hamburg, an event which itself draws more than 43,000 delegates annually.

Leading lawyer returns to take helm of Humber Marine and Renewables as ‘exciting new era’ dawns
Humber Marine & Renewables has appointed a ‘new’ chair and further bolstered its board of directors.
Experienced marine, fisheries and regulatory lawyer Andrew Oliver has returned to the helm of the organisation after overseeing its creation through the successful merger of Team Humber Marine Alliance and Grimsby Renewables Partnership three years ago.
Mr Oliver, who also chairs Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises - a group of companies with several active elements supporting the sector – is a partner at Hull-headquartered Andrew Jackson Solicitors, and brings further professional and corporate experience to the member organisation.
He first led THMA in 2020, steering through the post-Covid merger to create a strong unified voice for the burgeoning sector, before handing the watch over to fellow maritime lawyer Iain Butterworth. He stepped down late last year.
Mr Oliver said: “This is an exciting time for Humber Marine & Renewables, having successfully secured funding to employ a business development manager to drive the organisation forward. We want to ensure companies on our patch make the very most of the opportunities that lap at our shores, rely on our ports and define our economies.
“With the skyline dominated by the impressive Wind Peak jack-up vessel
in recent days as the latest offshore wind farm for our remarkable cluster is now built out, we’re buoyed by the knowledge we are still far from peak wind when it comes to the region.”
Mr Oliver has a strong environmental specialism aligned with his fisheries knowledge, where he is a recognised leader in his field. He also runs ThePlaice2Consult, offering non-legal services and solutions to the marine and fisheries sector.
The volunteer board he rejoins will also include another leading industry figure with a strong sense of pan-Humber working. Lee Blanchard, director of Rix Renewables, heads the Grimsby-based subsidiary of the Hull family business, having first entered the renewables industry as a wind turbine technician.
He joined Rix as operations and maintenance manager in 2019, and was appointed director in 2022, with the company providing technician, inspection and vessel services to operators.
“I am honoured and excited to join the board of Humber Marine and Renewables,” he said. “I look forward to collaborating with my fellow board members and stakeholders to ensure the Humber region remains a leader in the UK’s green energy journey.”

Record amount of funding for Skills Bootcamps
Thousands of learners across the region will soon be able to benefit from an extensive Skills Bootcamps programme after Hull City Council accepted a record-breaking £10 million of funding for the area.
The grant from Department for Education is more than double the amount of support received last year and will support Wave 6 of Skills Bootcamps for the year beginning 1 April 2025.
The funding, managed by Hull Training and Adult Education, will be available for businesses to deliver Skills Bootcamps training to upskill existing, new or prospective staff to help to fill vacancies.
Employers of all sizes can access the funding through Hull and East Riding YORtender to create new, bespoke courses, either independently or in partnership with training providers.
This will help plug skills gaps for in-demand sectors to increase company productivity and growth.
The council began its Skills Bootcamps training in 2021 with just £50,000 of funding, but due to its continued expansion and
success, reached over £4.3 million of support in 2024-25, before being more than doubled this year.
Cllr Linda Tock, portfolio holder for Hull Training at the council, said: “This record level of funding for the region is fantastic and really demonstrates the tremendous success of our Skills Bootcamps programme.
“Our Skills Bootcamp team at Hull Training and Adult Education continues to put in great work in supporting training providers to enable learners to thrive and to gain the skills they need to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
“We can achieve this by working with training providers and businesses across Hull and East Yorkshire, through schemes such as Skills Bootcamps.
“A skilled workforce is a productive workforce and it is only through giving them the relevant skills, training and support that they can play their part in driving forward the Hull and East Yorkshire economy.”

Net Zero Ports – Call for Evidence
The Department for Transport (DfT) has launched a comprehensive Call for Evidence, seeking input from industry stakeholders, environmental organisations, and the public to inform future policies supporting the decarbonisation of UK ports. This initiative forms part of the government’s Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy, aligning with its broader missions to become a Clean Energy Superpower and to boost the economy.
The consultation focuses on both the role of ports in enabling others—such as shipping operators and tenants—to decarbonise, and how ports can reduce their own operational emissions. Key areas under review include electricity capacity and future demand, deployment of onshore energy generation (e.g., solar and wind), infrastructure for alternative fuels (e.g., hydrogen, ammonia, methanol), battery storage, and refuelling capabilities. The document also explores the implications of an emissions-at-berth requirement, emphasising a technology-neutral approach while considering impacts on air quality.
The DfT recognises the need for increased electricity capacity at ports to meet decarbonisation and growth goals, and is seeking insights into the challenges posed by grid access, infrastructure costs, and planning timeframes. In parallel, the government is interested in understanding current port-level decarbonisation strategies, barriers to progress, and opportunities for innovation, investment, and job creation.
The Call for Evidence will also inform policies that support ports in becoming clean energy hubs and zero-emission refuelling centres, with the potential to serve both maritime and wider transport sectors. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit responses by 24 June

Silvertown Tunnel increases network resilience but it comes at a cost, says Logistics UK
Following the opening of the Silvertown Tunnel in London, Logistics UK Senior Policy Manager - Road Freight Regulation Chris Yarsley says it will increase network resilience and make journey times more predictable but feels the high toll charges penalise essential delivery vehicles who have no alternative means of servicing the capital:
“Logistics UK has consistently supported the Silvertown Tunnel project since its inception and, now it is open, the tunnel will play a key part in London’s road infrastructure.
“Road users have experienced significant bottlenecks at the Blackwall Tunnel and surrounding approach roads as there have been limited alternative routes to cross the Thames to the east of Tower Bridge. For HGVs, this was compounded by height issues at the Blackwall Tunnel which added additional time and cost to transport companies, resulting in higher prices for London’s businesses, residents and visitors.
“The new tunnel at Silvertown will provide greater resilience for the capital’s road network and make
journey times more predictable, but it is disappointing that the tolls for large vans and HGVs are significantly higher than those for small vans and private cars.
“Industry recognises that road charges are necessary to fund new infrastructure, but larger vehicles do not have the options to switch to other modes of transport and essential delivery vehicles have little alternative option but to use the capital’s road network. Industry ends up paying disproportionately more towards construction costs than private road users, and TfL should introduce a flat rate of tolls for fleet operators while offering discounts for zero emission vehicles, which would be more in line with the current London Congestion Charge scheme.”
Logistics UK is one of the UK’s biggest business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. Propelling the future of offshore wind innovation
Expertise from the University of Hull is helping the UK’s offshore wind industry tackle challenges and harness opportunities presented by the industry’s rapid expansion.
Problems presented by the manufacture and installation of ever-larger turbines, as well as their environmental impact, and the sustainability of resource and workforce, are being addressed by the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Offshore Wind Energy Sustainability and Resilience (the Aura CDT).
What is a CDT?
Centres for Doctoral Training are awarded strategic government funding by UK Research & Innovation to undertake research, innovation and skills training, underpinning core sectors of the UK economy. CDTs recruit graduates to undertake PhD research that directly contributes to the requirements of a specific sector or societal challenge.
The Aura CDT provides research, innovation and a talent pipeline for the Offshore Wind sector, supporting UK government ambitions to reach net zero by 2050.
One-to-one partnerships
The Aura CDT in Offshore Wind is the result of long-term and extensive collaboration between university and key industry partners, co-led by academics at the University of Hull and Loughborough University with Durham University, Newcastle University and The University of Sheffield.
The complex supply chains supporting wind farm development mean that there are a broad range of companies, from small to large, who are active components of the offshore wind industry, and the CDT’s partners reflect this range of organisations.
The close relationship with the sector ensures that the CDT is providing research solutions to industry-specific challenges.
Professor James Gilbert, CDT CoDirector & Director of the University of Hull’s Energy and Environment Institute said: “It’s the industry partnerships that ensure our CDT
research is relevant, focussed and impactful. We welcome new discussions about the challenges facing our offshore wind colleagues. Whatever the issue, we have experts who can help to develop a solution. The CDT recruits and develops future leaders for the sector, with openings for new PhD projects and researchers starting annually until 2028.”

Next generation blades
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s (SGRE) newest generation of wind turbine blades are the world’s largest single piece composite structures. As the demand for renewable energy pushes the size of these parts ever larger, this introduces challenges for their manufacturing facilities, methods and staff.
SGRE recognised a need to innovate their tried-and-tested methods for the design and manufacture of their blades, in order to meet future energy production requirements. They have been working with Aura CDT PhD researcher, Oliver Morgan-Clague to optimise wind turbine blade manufacturing processes.
Oliver worked at SGRE’s manufacturing facilities in both Hull and Aalborg, Denmark, in order to create models, simulations and physical validation of the casting process and resin flow, based on their specific blade designs. In doing so, he has driven the understanding, testing and modelling of their core manufacturing processes. Thanks to a recent funding award from the Northern Net Zero Accelerator, the recommendations from the research will be rolled out in a pilot study in Siemens Gamesa’s Hull wind turbine factory over the coming months.
“The impact of this work as both an academic study and industrial research has been massive; making significant steps to understand and model the thermo-chemical-physical interactions of resins and how these processes interact during the casting of blade structures. The work is already impacting blade manufacturing methods and will inform future blade designs.” Oliver Morgan-Clague, Aura CDT researcher
Addressing the human factor
Offshore wind farm development is expanding into ever-deeper waters, so technicians are facing longer boat journeys to reach turbines, where they carry out essential maintenance tasks. These crew-transfer journeys take place in variable sea conditions, so motion sickness can be part of the daily routine for technicians, with potential for impacts on efficiency and well-being.
Lisa Somerville’s PhD research with the Aura CDT and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult directly addresses the offshore wind industry’s needs to understand motion sickness effects on their offshore technicians.
Lisa is using Virtual Reality (VR) and a motion simulator to evaluate the impact of travel on cognitive ability. She’s investigating how mild motion sickness might impact thinking and manual dexterity when completing work-like tasks, in order to inform the offshore renewable energy industry. Once there is an understanding of the impact that travel can have on short-term cognitive ability and performance, she will examine the potential for visual stimulus techniques to address the cues that can lead to disorientation and sickness.
Lisa said: “Energy is fundamental for our modern societies. It’s also an area where we can make a large contribution to reducing our carbon footprint and its impacts on climate change. It’s exciting to work in an area that can make a positive contribution to the largest threat to humanity and biodiversity.”
Recruitment for doctoral researchers is OPEN until Friday 9 May with September 2025 entry.

Safeguarding our Seas: Business as usual for Hull’s Marine Laboratory
For over 40 years, the University of Hull’s Marine Laboratory has played a vital role in understanding the marine environment around the Humber coastline.
Recognised as one of the UK’s leading centres for marine species identification and analysis, the Laboratory’s work is central to sustainable marine management across the country.
Following the recent tanker collision off the Humber coast, experts from the Laboratory were immediately on hand to assess both actual and potential ecological impacts, sampling water from close to the crash site to understand potential ecological consequences.
Academics also shared expert insight on the collision through interviews with Sky News, BBC and Channel 4, highlighting the University’s research strengths and commitment to understanding the incident’s wider implications.
The collision happened in the Holderness offshore marine protected area, a sandy seabed that supports diverse species and serves as a nursery for fish like lemon sole, plaice, and sprat. It borders a major seabird breeding ground and Europe’s largest crustacean fishery, with £15-million of live lobster landed annually.
Professor Rodney Forster, Director of the Hull Marine Laboratory at the University of Hull said:
“If you want to understand the impacts of potential pollution events then you need to know what a healthy marine environment looks like.
“And that’s not just true for marine accidents.
“We depend on the seas and our coastal environments for food and
other resources, for energy and for transport and for managing our waste.
All those activities may impact on marine ecosystems.”
Marine Science has been studied in Hull since the University’s inception in 1927. The marine laboratory has grown into a nationally recognised hub for marine research, data, and expertise. Today, it supports the University, industry, and organisations, working with a broad range of clients and providing them with cutting-edge insights and services to meet their environmental obligations.
Thousands of students have studied with leading marine science researchers at the University of Hull, going on to build impactful careers around the world.
Professor Forster said: “It’s still too early to say whether last month’s collision
will have long term impacts on the seas and coasts off the Humber estuary. We will continue our work on sampling and monitoring and when the spotlight moves on, we will still be working with partners to ensure that decisions on how we use our seas and coasts are properly informed by the best marine science.”

Maritime Futures trainees break barriers as Kirkella welcomes first female crew members
Three Maritime Futures trainees are the latest crew members to have joined the Hull-registered distant water trawler “Kirkella”.
Hanna, Megan and Josh earned their seagoing certification earlier this year following the completion of the intensive three-week Maritime Futures training course.
Trainees Hanna Jenkinson and Megan Dosdale are the first female crew members to join the Kirkella trawler.
Operated by UK Fisheries Ltd and boasting a crew of 30, the freezer trawler fishes in the Canadian, Norwegian, and Barents Seas, supplying approximately one-twelfth of the fish served in UK fish and chip shops.
The Maritime Futures course was commissioned by the Hull Maritime project, funded by Trinity House Maritime Fund and Hull City Council’s Learning and Skills Multiply programme, and delivered by East Coast Maritime Training, a not-for-profit organisation rooted in Hull’s fishing industry heritage.
Megan Dosdale, a former Royal Navy member recently returned to Hull, embarked on the course with aspirations of working aboard fishing or standby vessels. Reflecting on the training experience, she said: “Len [the trainer] shared lots of his past experiences which has helped put my mind at ease about going into the fishing sector.”
Hanna Jenkinson, who originally had booked a Level two Powerboat Handing course to help land a job specialising as a watersports front deckhand on yachts. Hanna said: “This experience on the Kirkella is too good of an opportunity to turn down. I have gained a lot of knowledge and hands-on skills as well as the key qualifications to allow me to get a job on board a sea vessel. I’m really excited to set sail.”
Josh Telford undertook the three-week training course and also secured a place as a trainee deckhand on the Kirkella, he added: “I have gained knowledge and skills which I can now put into practice.
This was the best course of study I have ever taken – I enjoyed every minute of it.”
Acknowledging their success, Gillian Osgerby, Hull City Council’s interim assistant director of major projects and infrastructure, said: “We are always very proud to hear of the success of trainees and are extremely pleased to hear that Hanna, Megan, and Josh have been given positions as trainee deckhands onboard the Kirkella trawler because of the Maritime Futures programme.
“We wish them every success for the future. These women and other crew members are not only making history but also helping to shape a more inclusive and sustainable future for the local fishing industry.”
Kim Jenson from East Coast Maritime Training, said: “We are always very proud to hear of the success of our candidates and are extremely pleased to hear that Hanna, Megan and Josh have been given positions as trainee deckhands onboard the Kirkella. We wish them every success for the future.”
These trailblazing women and other crew members are
paving the way for greater diversity in the sector, ensuring the fishing industry remains progressive, sustainable, and inclusive. The Maritime Futures programme, with its 80 per cent employment rate exemplifies how training and support can transform ambitions into reality, bridging the gap between Hull’s historic maritime roots and its future.
Over the past year, 35 candidates completed the course and 83 per cent of them have secured employment within 30 days of the course ending.
