THESE 3D SCANS ARE BRILLIANT; I’M SO GLAD MY ART CAN BE SEEN FOR GENERATIONS TO COME
New 3D scans have preserved the impressive artwork on Abbey Walk car park for generations to come.
The panels, created by Grimsby born artist Harold Gosney in 1969, adorn the pillars of the car park and are inspired by drawings in the handbook of the car that he had at the time, which was an Austin Cambridge estate car, and included suspension, carburettor, etc.
Although there are 40 panels on the structure, these are a repeated series of 4 designs – some flipped 180 degrees.
Abbey Walk car park was closed in May 2024 following the discovery of structural defects. Water ingress into key structural supports, making the car park unsafe to use.
As a result, its demolition was approved in September last year to make way for a surface level car park, but with the capability in the foundations of being built on in future years if needed.
Whilst the final decision on Mr. Gosney’s artwork has yet to be made, work to preserve them is already underway.
Steps have been taken to use modern 3D scanning technology so the artwork can be viewed for
generations to come. This will also allow for the panels to be reprinted in the future using a range of materials.
To do this, the University of Lincoln’s Conservation team utilised a number of methods. The team boasts an impressive amount of previous work including structures like Elizabeth Tower, commonly known as Big Ben, and paintings at the National Army Museum.
The scanners work by projecting light on to the object in question and measuring the time taken for it to be reflected back. This is then converted into co-ordinates which are used to reconstruct the structure into a digital 3D model.
The team used a handheld scanner that collects a series of images, known as frames, in a process called tracking. The software then collates where overlaps might occur from each frame to produce the final 3D image.
Now, with the scans complete, his artwork can be

reproduced for years to come. The project team will also be exploring ways in which the reliefs can be removed as a whole. The 3D scanning is a safety measure to ensure the artworks can be preserved in some format regardless of how the structure is demolished.
Harold Gosney, the artist, is thrilled with the scans and is relieved to know his art will be preserved for generations to come.
The planning application has been submitted for the demolition of the car park and is currently in the planning process. If you wish to view the application, go to www.nelincs.gov.uk- external site , search for Planning Portal, and then use reference DM/0018/25/FUL.
“With shared sustainability and environmental values, this collaboration brings great things for us and our customers alike. We’ll continue delighting with giveaways, surprise pop-ups and more. What better way to fuel the fun?”

FIRST LOOK AT FRESHNEY PLACE’S NEW COMMUNITY DIAGNOSTIC CENTRE,
SET FOR 120,000 APPOINTMENTS
EVERY YEAR
Just take a look at what Grimsby’s new Community Diagnostic Centre, (CDC) has to offer residents across North East Lincolnshire.
Now open in Freshney Place, the new centre will be offering around 120,000 appointments every year – cutting waiting times for tests in a convenient town centre location.
CDCs are being pioneered across the country to provide diagnostic tests, such as scans and health checks - reducing pressures on hospitals across the country. Healthcare providers from across this region have been involved in the scoping and development of CDCs both in Grimsby and Scunthorpe – ensuring that they prioritise the pathways that will benefit local communities the most, based on need.
Essentially too, for Grimsby Town Centre, the new £10-million CDC will increase footfall and add to the diversification of Freshney Place into a centre that is a hub for the community –
complementing the retail offer.
This new CDC is opening as work progresses on the £50million Freshney Place Leisure, Food Hall and Market Scheme at the western end of the centre –offering a new cinema, and leisure outlets, along with the new food hall and market offer. A temporary market will be opening near the Riverhead Square entrance to the centre later this year.
There is also the new E-Factor Business Hub in St James’ House, the OnSide Horizon Youth Zone at Alexandra Dock and the plans for 123 new homes on the neighbouring brownfield site.
North East Lincolnshire Council Leader, Cllr Philip Jackson, whose portfolio includes regeneration, said after touring the CDC: “This is an absolutely fantastic
facility for the residents of North East Lincolnshire. This will not only provide facilities for 120,000 appointments a year but will also see increased footfall into Freshney Place.
“This is all part of the repurposing of the town centre, and I am delighted to see this CDC now welcoming people for appointments.”
Freshney Place centre director, Amanda Austin, added: “It is a great thing for the residents of North East Lincolnshire. Freshney Place has been at the heart of the community here for decades, and this represents how we are moving forward to offer something different for our customers.”

YKC Summer Camp is offering day passes for the first time, as well as free membership for local dog-mad youngsters
Young dog lovers and their fourlegged-friends are promised another unforgettable summer of family-friendly fun in Rutland, as the annual Young Kennel Club (YKC) Summer Camp returns to Rutland Showground, for a fifth consecutive year.
With a fun-filled week of activities, training and entertainment for both children and their dogs, the YKC Summer Camp will kick off on Saturday 26 July until Friday 1 August and will welcome over 80 young dog enthusiasts, alongside their canine companions.
This year, day passes will be available for members who would like to try a taster of the activities on offer - including training sessions, team games and evening entertainment – and for those youngsters local to Rutland who are interested in booking onto a taster day, there are a limited number of free YKC membership for the year available.
The Young Kennel Club has been running since 1985, with the first Summer Camp taking place in 1992, and 2021 saw the Camp take up residence at the showground for the first time. This summer, the YKC will welcome back children and teenagers between the ages of six and seventeen, offering a perfect opportunity for them to enjoy a holiday with their dogs, whilst also keeping active, joining in with social events and taking part in plenty of training activities with their four-legged friends.
The week includes the chance to brush up on skills across a range of dog-focused disciplines, including agility, ringcraft, hoopers, obedience and heelwork to music, and even qualifiers for Crufts 2026.
There will also be an educational programme that will provide information about all things canine
– from dog grooming and care, to The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training scheme, and throughout the week there will be exciting team-based games and activities during the day, and a packed evening schedule, including games, a quiz night, a talent show and many more. YKC volunteers will be on hand as team leaders, which not only provides them with the invaluable developmental opportunity to put their leadership skills into practice, the younger members also benefit from being mentored by older members, who have been involved with the YKC for many years.
YKC members must have a parent or guardian on-site at all times, but all the family are welcome to enjoy the fun, with onsite activities including bingo, camp cricket match and many more.
Helen Kerfoot, spokesperson for the Young Kennel Club said: “YKC Summer Camp is such a highlight of the summer and as well as seeing many of our returning members, this year we are really excited to welcome new faces who want to try out the wealth
of activities we have on offer to find out if the Young Kennel Club is for them.
“Camp really promotes the ethos of the Young Kennel Club, by providing young dog lovers with the knowledge and awareness of what it means to be a responsible dog owner, while still being filled with fun and games, and the chance to make unforgettable memories with new and old friends.”
Joining YKC Camp for the week starts from £295 – with a reduced rate available for siblings joining – while the day passes cost £85 per day. Free membership for the year is available for local residents – with postcodes LE, PE, NG, LN, NN and DE – and parents should email ykc@thekennelclub.org.uk for their free membership code to be used in conjunction with booking a day space.
Parents of young dog lovers who may be interested in becoming a member of the Young Kennel Club should visit http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/ykc for more information.
BANK HOLIDAY ADVENTURES
There’s something wonderful about a long weekend in May. The days are lighter, and the county of Lincolnshire begins to wake up with all the colour and charm of spring. With two bank holidays to enjoy, it’s the perfect opportunity to pause the routine and soak up some of the best days out the region has to offer.
Whether you’re drawn to the countryside, the coast, or a quiet corner of a market town, Lincolnshire delivers a mix of scenery, history, and experiences that feel a world away from the everyday. It’s a time of year when the Lincolnshire Wolds, with their sweeping views and gentle hills, offer some of the finest walking routes in the country. Wildflowers line the lanes, lambs dot the fields, and villages like Tealby welcome visitors with open doors and cosy tearooms.
If the sea is calling, the coast is just as inviting. The soft sands of Sutton-on-Sea or the windswept beauty of Anderby Creek offer a slower pace of life, where the only plan is to paddle in the shallows or enjoy fish and chips by the sea wall. For families, the traditional seaside fun of Skegness is a firm favourite - with arcades, donkey rides and ice cream in hand, it’s a classic way to spend a sunny afternoon.
And for a stress-free way to explore it all, why not hop on the bus? May is a brilliant
time to see the county by public transport - it’s scenic, sustainable, and means you can relax and enjoy the view without worrying about parking. If you’re heading for the coast, keep an eye out for the colourful Skegness Seasiders: a cheerful fleet of character-themed open-top buses that bring smiles to passengers of all ages as they breeze along the promenade.
History lovers will find plenty to explore too. In the heart of the city, Lincoln Castle and the magnificent cathedral offer a full day of discovery, while further afield, estates like Burghley House and Belton House combine elegant architecture with beautiful gardens, play areas, and space to roam. Many of these historic attractions host spring fairs, open-air theatre, or seasonal trails during the May weekends - perfect for making memories with little ones.
But it’s not just the big days out that make these weekends special. Sometimes it’s as simple as wandering through one of Lincolnshire’s market towns, browsing antiques in Horncastle, picking up local cheese and fresh bread in Louth, or sitting outside a cafe watching the world go by. May is also prime time for artisan markets and food festivals, where the air is filled with the smell of street food and the sound of local musicians.
Of course, no adventure is complete without something delicious to eat. Lincolnshire’s food scene is bursting with fresh, seasonal flavour - from farm shop picnics to pub lunches. Many countryside cafés and garden centres now offer
Whether you’re admiring bluebells in the woods, bouncing through bustling markets, or catching a coastal breeze on the top deck of an open-top bus, May in Lincolnshire is all about simple pleasures and memorable days out. Pack your camera, bring your sense of adventure, and let the county show you its springtime best.

Education remains at the heart of The Lincolnshire Show, with more than 60 schools taking part in this year’s LAS Schools’ Challenge. Pupils will be presenting their projects on topics such as sustainability, innovation, food production and the environment – a testament to the Show’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of land stewards.
As well as offering fun for families and a vital platform for farmers and producers, the Show also supports young entrepreneurs through the annual Grow with the Show competition. NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE
ANSWERS THE ‘CALL’ TO CELEBRATE
THESE AMAZING WADERS
This Easter weekend saw celebrations for Europe’s largest wading bird, the Curlew. Marked annually on April 21, World Curlew Day highlights the importance of protecting these elegant birds, which can be seen all along the mudflats of the Humber Estuary..
The UK breeding population of Curlews is of international importance, with around 30% of the west European population spending winter in the UK. Despite this, there have been worrying declines in the breeding population. In 2015, Curlews were added to the Red List on the UK Conservation Status Report. Red is the highest conservation priority, with species on this list needing urgent action.
It is no exaggeration to say that many parts of the earth will lose curlews over the next few decades. However, curlews are one of the species for which the Humber Estuary has been classed as an internationally important habitat and is protected in law.
Here in North East Lincolnshire, our natural habitat of mud flats is perfect for curlews, who utilise their long legs and curvy beaks for finding food in our thick estuary mud.
More than 1% of the Humber Estuary’s curlew population can be seen on the North East Lincolnshire coast. That number is likely to be even higher as they also use sites further inland, and they love boggy playing fields.
At Novartis Ings, one of our unique Mitigation Sites, there are flocks of
more than 200 birds, which also use the agricultural land around. Loss or change of habitat has been a major factor in the species decline, but sites like Novartis Ings provide a safe habitat for curlews and other birds to rest and feed.
These tall wading birds arrive along our coastline from July onwards with their numbers peaking in January. A group of curlews is called a curfew, a salon or a skein. You can often spot them on football pitches along our coastline, looking for food in the torn-up turf. The oldest ringed curlew was found to be over 32 years old!
Their ‘cur-lee’ call is distinctive, along with their long, downcurved bill that has a flash of pink underneath. They use this curvy bill to eat worms, shellfish and shrimps from the mud flats. Due to their eating habits, female curlews have a longer bill than the males.
Once Curlews make it to adulthood, they are very hardy birds, but many don’t survive to fledging age. This is due to changing landscapes, habitat loss, recreational disturbance, climate change and natural predators. Curlews take 90 days to nest successfully, they need a variety of tall and short vegetation to provide cover and food.
Celebrate our curlew population in North East Lincolnshire by respecting our birdlife. Please observe safety measures to protect nesting birds from disturbance by following these simple steps:
• Keep to the designated footpaths
• Keep dogs under control
• Anyone using the coastline for water sports must stay away from the salt marsh and sand banks.

PAUL SOUTHWELL
Paul has lived within the Peterborough and Stamford area for all of his life and within the village of Glinton for the last 23.
Paul’s love of metal as a medium has been with him since his early school years when he would play about with different forms and ideas in metalwork class and this interest stayed with him as he came to work as a fabricator by trade, something he has now been involved with for the last few decades.
Paul describes the inspiration and construction of his sculptures in his own words,
“I have loved working with steel ever since I studied metalwork at school and now I am a fabricator by trade working at a local firm.
I have always enjoyed creating pieces in my workshop for family and friends and class myself as a self taught sculptor.
About 3 years ago I started to incorporate old tools and scrap metal into my work, the variety of shapes and colours captured my imagination taking my work from utilitarian to decorative.
I built my first guitar sculpture for my son (who is a keen guitarist) as a present. I enjoyed the process and decided to create a range of guitars each one unique.
I was then lucky enough to do a commission incorporating items personal to the client, i really enjoyed the challenge of creating a totally unique piece that had that personal touch and hopefully get the chance to do so again.
And my most recent piece was a commission to produce something completely different commemorating 150yrs of engineering for a well known local firm, made from items they produce.”
SHOP, STROLL AND SOAK UP THE SEASON

Fashion fans will find plenty to inspire this season. Light layers, floaty fabrics, and sunny prints are making their way into shop displays, alongside bold accessories and stylish footwear—perfect for picnics in the park, weekend getaways or simply refreshing your everyday wardrobe.
Lincolnshire’s boutiques offer a carefully curated mix of beloved labels and emerging designers, so you’re bound to discover something that catches your eye.
Of course, no outing is complete without a well-earned pit stop. SHADES OF STYLE
As the sun climbs higher and the days grow brighter, there’s one essential accessory we all reach for - a pair of sunglasses.
More than just a stylish finishing touch, sunglasses are a vital part of protecting your eyes and keeping you comfortable on sunny days. And with so many designs, colours and shapes to choose from, there’s never been a better time to find the perfect pair.
The right sunglasses don’t just elevate your look - they protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, helping to prevent longterm damage and reduce glare, whether you’re driving, walking along the coast, or enjoying an al fresco lunch. Quality lenses offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays, making them as much about eye health as they are about style.
When it comes to choosing the perfect pair, it’s all about finding a shape and shade that suits your face and your lifestyle. Classic aviators offer timeless appeal, while oversized frames bring a touch of glamour. Round lenses create a soft, vintage vibe, and sporty wraparounds are great for active days out. If you’re unsure what suits you, try on a few different styles — and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
This season’s collections bring plenty of choice, from subtle tortoiseshell and pastel tones to bold colours and statement
frames. Mirror lenses are also making a comeback, adding a cool, contemporary edge. For those who wear prescription glasses, there are plenty of stylish options with prescription lenses or clip-ons that combine practicality and flair.
Look out for polarised lenses too — these reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water and roads, making them perfect for driving, coastal walks or holidays by the sea. And if you’re shopping for children, don’t forget to pick up a pair for them as well. Young eyes are especially sensitive to the sun, and there are lots of fun, colourful designs to choose from that they’ll love wearing.
You’ll find a great selection of sunglasses in local opticians, fashion boutiques and independent stores across the region. Many offer expert advice and fittings to help you find a pair that’s
not just stylish, but truly comfortable and protective.
So, whether you’re updating your summer wardrobe or heading off on your next sunny adventure, don’t underestimate the power of the perfect sunglasses. They’ll keep your eyes safe, your vision clear, and your outfit on point — all summer long.

BREAKOUT TREATMENT
FOR DRY EYE DISEASE ( DED)
If your eyes feel dry, irritated, or painful for most or all of the time, you are quite probably suffering from Dry Eye Disease (DED), especially if you continually feel “there’s something in my eye”.
One in five, and nearly 800 million people worldwide, suffer from DED. Over 50% of females over the age of 40, and over 90% of menopausal females, are thought to live with this condition. More recently, the condition has become more common in all ages and genders due to environmental factors, use of cosmetics and medications, excessive screen use, and underlying conditions such as blepharitis and Sjögren’s syndrome.
The front part of your eyes is lubricated by a special moist film consisting of a mucous layer nearest your eyes, a middle, watery layer derived from your tear glands, and a third, outer layer, which is oily (lipid) and produced by special glands (the Meibomian glands) in your upper and lower eyelids.
If your Meibomian glands are not producing

enough oily film, the other lubricating layers will continually dry out and that is what causes the irritation and other symptoms of Dry Eye Disease.
This new therapy for Dry Eye Disease offered at O’Brien’s in Brigg is safe, noninvasive, painless - and doesn’t involve any eyedrops. It is known as Intense Pulsating Light (IPL) and Low Light Level Therapy (LLLT), though it may also be referred to as Photobiomodulation (PBM).
IPL uses thermal pulses to stimulate the Meibomian glands, and LLLT uses a specific wavelength of light to gently heat the eyelids. This revolutionary new treatment helps the Meibomian glands to work properly and therefore stabilises and improves the quantity and quality of the oily layer of the tear film. The treatment provides an immediate relief of symptoms.

FROM SHADE TO STUMPERY
TRANSFORMING DARK CORNERS INTO LUSH GREEN HAVENS
Many gardens have areas that receive little sunlight, perhaps a shadowy corner beneath a tree or a narrow passageway leading from the back door. While these spaces may seem like problem areas, they can become thriving, green retreats. With the right plant choices and thoughtful design, a gloomy corner can be transformed into a verdant haven for both people and wildlife.
If there’s one group of plants that truly thrives in the shade, it’s ferns. With hundreds of varieties, gardeners have an abundance of choices. Here are five standout ferns to consider for your garden:
• Hart’s Tongue Fern (Asplenium scolopendrium)
• Soft Shield Fern (Polystichum setiferum)
• Copper Shield Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora)
• Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium niponicum)
• Polypody (Polypodium vulgare)
Rather than simply planting a bed of ferns, why not take things to the next level by creating a stumpery? This is an especially great option if you’ve recently removed a tree or hedge and are left with unsightly
stumps. Instead of seeing them as a problem, turn them into a striking garden feature. Their weathered, gnarled forms provide the perfect natural framework.
Start with various shade-loving plants such as ferns and foxgloves, choosing a mix of shapes and sizes will add depth and interest to your stumpery. You can also use mosses and lichens to accelerate the ageing process. Along with stumps, you can also use driftwood or reclaimed wood for a more natural look. The key to achieving a natural look is to tuck plants into every nook and cranny. Do not be afraid to divide larger plants and place smaller sections into crevices, allowing them to spread and intertwine naturally over time.
After planting, water everything thoroughly, then apply a mulch of bark
chips or shredded woody garden waste. This helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil health, while also adding a polished, natural finish to the space. In a short time, you will have a green focal point added to your garden.

ALFRESCO LIVING
MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE
As the days grow longer and the temperatures begin to rise, now is the perfect time to start thinking about alfresco living. Whether you have a sprawling garden, a sunny patio, or a compact balcony, creating a welcoming outdoor space can transform how you enjoy the warmer months.
With a few simple touches, you can turn any outdoor corner into a relaxing retreat, perfect for everything from morning coffees to long, lazy evenings with friends.
Start by thinking about how you want to use your space. Do you dream of garden dining with loved ones, a quiet nook to curl up with a book, or a stylish spot to entertain on summer evenings? Once you’ve set your intentions, it’s easier to choose furniture and accessories that make it all come together.
Comfortable seating is key. If space allows, consider a rattan sofa set or a wooden bench softened with weatherproof cushions and throws.
Bistro tables and fold-away chairs are ideal for smaller patios or balconies, offering just enough room for a drink and a snack without crowding the area. For added flair, mix materials – pair wooden furniture with metal lanterns or natural jute rugs for a layered, lived-in feel.
Lighting can completely transform your outdoor space. As dusk falls, fairy lights strung through trees or along a fence bring instant charm, while solar-powered lanterns or LED candles offer a soft glow without the fuss. For larger areas, consider freestanding lamps designed for garden use, or even a firepit for both warmth and ambience as the evenings grow cooler. >>>
Plants play a starring role in alfresco living. Choose a mix of greenery and flowering plants to add colour, scent and texture. Fragrant herbs like lavender, mint and rosemary not only smell wonderful but can also be used in cooking or cocktails. Potted hydrangeas, trailing ivy, and tall grasses can be arranged in containers to suit any size of space, and hanging baskets or vertical planters are perfect for balconies or smaller gardens where floor space is limited.
Accessories bring it all together. Think outdoor rugs to define zones, scatter
cushions for comfort, and tableware that’s stylish but practical – melamine plates and acrylic glasses are durable yet still look lovely. Add a few decorative touches, like wind chimes or garden sculptures, and you’ll have a space that feels as personal and inviting as your indoor rooms.
If you’re looking for a local place to stock up on plants and get inspired, be sure to visit Roxie’s Garden Centre. Alongside a wonderful selection of seasonal blooms and garden essentials, they’ve recently opened a charming coffee shop - the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee and a slice of cake while browsing for your next garden addition.
And if you’re dreaming of a full garden transformation, why not call in the experts? Fullers is a local garden design and construction service that can help you turn any outdoor space into something truly special.
