FREE TREE SHELTER RECYCLING IN LINCOLNSHIRE

Lincolnshire landowners can once again recycle their used tree shelters, also known as tree guards or tree tubes, for free this summer thanks to the return of Tubex’s nationwide tree shelter Collection & Recycling Programme.

Commonly seen protecting young saplings along roadsides and in newly planted woodlands, tree shelters are vital for early tree growth but must be removed and recycled once their job is done.

Now back for another season, Tubex’s recycling initiative provides a simple and responsible

solution for disposing of these shelters sustainably.

One of these recycling hubs is now open at British Hardwood Tree Nursery in Snitterby (DN21 4TZ), giving foresters, farmers, landscapers and landowners a free and convenient place to recycle their shelters locally from May to September.

THE PRINCESS ROYAL TO ATTEND 140TH LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW

THE PRINCESS ROYAL AND MATT BAKER TO VISIT

LANDMARK COUNTY SHOW ON 18TH AND 19TH JUNE

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal is to attend this year’s Lincolnshire Show, which is back for the 140th time on 18th and 19th June 2025.

Matt Baker MBE

Television presenter Matt Baker MBE, best known for his work on BBC’s Blue Peter, Countryfile and The One Show, will also be attending the event, which has announced an inspiring programme of events and performances.

Brand-new Main Ring act, the Knights of Middle England, a professional team of stunt riders, performers, actors and combatants, will be bringing an actionpacked performance, and all things countryside will be showcased at the Show’s new Rural Voices Stage.

The Lincolnshire Show beach, using sand sourced from the Lincolnshire coast, and the Garden Show, which were both introduced for last year’s event, are set to return - bigger and better than before - as well as long-standing favourites including the Shetland Pony Grand National, LAS Schools’ Challenge, Floral Arts Competition and visits from canine friends with Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

The Lincolnshire Show is a celebration of all things Lincolnshire and rural life, with around 60,000 people expected to attend the two-day event.

Charlotte Powell, Chief Executive of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, said:

“The Lincolnshire Show is always a significant event for the county, but it feels extra special this time as we celebrate our 140th Show.

“From the very first Show in 1869, the

event has been a source of pride and celebration for everyone involved with the county of Lincolnshire, and we can’t wait for everyone to see all the hard work that has gone into this year’s event.

“It will be an absolute pleasure and honour to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and Matt Baker MBE as guests for this year’s Show, as we once again celebrate all things Lincolnshire with tens of thousands of visitors.

“There will be familiar favourites, new attractions, exhibitors offering tasty local food and drink, and activities for all the family to enjoy. Whether it’s the vast range of farm animals and competitions that pique your interest, or the jawdropping displays and demonstrations, the 2025 Lincolnshire Show has something for everyone!

“We look forward to welcoming you all to what is sure to be another unforgettable Lincolnshire Show.”

The Princess Royal, who previously served as President of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society and now holds a Lifetime Membership, will attend the Show on Wednesday 18th June, while Matt Baker will be attending on Thursday 19th June.

The new Rural Voices Stage, which spotlights all things countryside, will offer engaging panel discussions and expert-led networking, allowing people working in agriculture and related industries to deepen their knowledge of British farming, land management and sustainability.

Foodies will also be able to watch a series of masterclasses and demonstrations at the popular Lincolnshire Kitchen, as well as enjoying some of Lincolnshire’s finest food and drink with F.A.B and Good Grub Co. at Stockman’s bar.

Organised by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS), a charity dedicated to championing the importance of food, farming and the countryside, the iconic Lincolnshire Show is a family-friendly day out that draws 60,000 visitors every year - including 6,000 school children and over 500 exhibitors. There are also around 2,500 animals at the Show each year. It is located just four miles from Lincoln city centre and spread out over 270 acres at the Lincolnshire Showground.

With Lincolnshire home to more than 4,500 farms, the Show remains true to its roots with a strong focus on farming and agriculture. All funds raised through ticket sales are invested in the LAS’ charity work, including the LAS Education Programme, and are reinvested in producing the Show each year.

A DAY TO REMEMBER

EXPLORING LINCOLNSHIRE ON ARMED FORCES DAY

There’s something quietly powerful about how Lincolnshire comes together each summer to mark Armed Forces Day. On Saturday 28th June 2025, the county will once again honour its proud military heritage — not only through parades and performances, but through shared moments of remembrance, reflection and local pride.

The day begins best in Lincoln, where the historic city centre will be filled with life and purpose. Expect the sound of military bands echoing through cobbled streets, striking displays of vintage and modern military vehicles, and a warm, respectful crowd. From schoolchildren waving flags to veterans wearing medals with quiet dignity, the atmosphere is both heartfelt and uplifting.

Wander through the city’s open spaces and you’ll find charity stalls, live performances and local groups creating a real sense of community. With Lincoln’s stunning skyline as a backdrop — dominated by its cathedral and medieval architecture — it’s a setting that naturally lends itself to reflection and celebration.

If you’re in the mood to explore further, Cleethorpes offers one of the UK’s most

impressive Armed Forces events that weekend. Its seafront celebration spans three days, featuring air displays, parades, family activities, and a vibrant mix of military and civilian entertainment. The connection to the region’s RAF history adds extra meaning to the spectacle.

In North Lincolnshire, communities will also be marking the occasion with events that focus on education, involvement and appreciation. Expect everything from cadet parades and interactive zones to opportunities for younger generations to learn about service and sacrifice in meaningful ways.

Wherever your day takes you, there’s always time for a thoughtful pause — whether it’s in a quiet corner of a local café, on a bench watching the world go by, or simply taking

a moment to reflect. These smaller pauses often give the day its heart.

Armed Forces Day isn’t just about looking back — it’s also about celebrating the strength and spirit of our communities today. And in Lincolnshire, where tradition and togetherness run deep, it’s a day that feels both personal and shared.

So whether you’re remembering a loved one, showing support, or simply soaking up the sense of unity, Lincolnshire offers the perfect place to spend a day that truly matters.

PARKWAY’S SUMMER SEASON

SUNSHINE, THRILLS AND POPCORN

This Summer, a trip to Parkway Cinema is more than just the usual blockbuster. It’s a chance to cool down, switch off, and settle in for a big-screen experience like no otherwith all the hottest releases and as much popcorn as you want.

As one of the UK’s most successful independent cinema chains, Parkway has been delighting audiences since 1983. Founded by Gerald Parkes and his wife, Denise, this family-run business has built a reputation for offering much more than the average multiplex - all thanks to their unwavering commitment to exceptional customer service and a true love of cinema.

“We’ve always aimed to be so much more than just the films we show,” says Richard Parkes, who, along with his brother Gerrard and mother Denise, took over the family business after Gerald’s passing in 2013. Gerald, who was awarded an MBE for his incredible contribution to the UK cinema industry, was passionate about getting every detail just right. “It was never just about showing films,” Richard continues. “It’s about creating a shared experience. The films, the food, the atmosphere-it’s all part of the magic. We’re lucky enough to be part of some truly special moments for our audience”.

This season don’t miss out on all the movie madness - whether you’re looking for a bit of nostalgia, some superhero spectacle, or family-friendly fun. There’s a new release every week, and Parkway has something for every kind of film fan.

With additional special screenings – Including ToddlerVision for first-time young viewers, Little Penguins for family-friendly films, Parent + Baby for caregivers with infants, relaxed screenings with a supportive, sensory-friendly environment, Senior Screen for older audiences, and more – they aim to make the cinema experience accessible for all.

CLEETHORPES Parkway is the largest independent cinema in the UK. The nine-screen cinema also has a fully equipped live stage, with a range of upcoming shows including The Amazing Bubbleman, The Upbeat Beatles and more.

The Playhouse Cinema is believed to be the oldest cinema in Lincolnshire, opening just before Woodhall Spa’s Kinema in the Woods in 1922. Originally converted from a Victorian chapel

Parkway also operates in Beverley, Barnsley and most recently Workington which opened in 2023.

“We’ve got many plans for the future, both for our current cinemas and others. It’s not just about watching a film; it’s about creating unforgettable memories one screen at a time”.

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD ( PIL)

ANNOUNCE MAJOR TOUR FOR 2025

John Lydon’s iconoclastic band Public Image Ltd (PiL) has announced a major tour of the UK and Ireland for summer 2025.

The 23-date tour billed as ‘This Is Not… The Final PiL Tour’ will start in Bristol on 22nd May and end in Belfast on 16th August, and includes dates along the way in Dublin (12th June), Cardiff (14th June) and Glasgow (29th July).

The tour also include festival appearances at Stone Valley South in Ware (23rd May), Cruel World Festival in Milton Keynes (15th June), Stone Valley Midlands in Newark (27th June), Rebellion Festival in Blackpool (7th August), Stone Valley North in Durham (8th August) and Putting the Fast in Belfast (16th August).

Tickets go on sale at 10.00am on Friday 15th November, available from all venues and via www.pilofficial.com.

PiL’s tour dates for 2025 comes after Lydon thought the band might not tour again. His lifelong friend and manager, John Rambo Stevens passed away suddenly following the last PiL tour, in December 2023, soon after the death of Lydon’s wife, Nora, in April 2023.

Lydon thought that might be the end of his touring days. However, he was overwhelmed by the love and support of fans when he undertook a spoken word tour of the UK in spring this year.

Lydon said: “I thought that might be it. After losing Nora, and Rambo, I couldn’t see a way through. I’d already committed to the spoken word tour, this spring, and I never let anyone down – I always stick

to my word – so I had to do those dates.

“The thing is, people were so overwhelmingly positive, they really showed me a lot of love, and they asked me to tour PiL again. With so many people asking and with the band meaning so much to them, I couldn’t just stay on my sofa and not tour – tempting though that obviously is.”

After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed post-punk originators Public Image Ltd (PiL). Widely regarded as one of the most innovative bands of all time, their

music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 Singles and 5 UK Top 20 Albums.

With a shifting line-up and unique sound – fusing rock, dance, folk, pop and dub –Lydon guided the band from their debut album ‘First Issue’ in 1978 through to 1992’s ‘That What Is Not’, before a 17 year hiatus.

Lydon reactivated PiL in 2009, touring extensively and releasing three critically acclaimed albums, ‘This is PiL’ (2012), ‘What The World Needs Now…’ (2015) and ‘End of World’ (2023).

“UNFORGETTABLE SETTING”

Harlaxton Manor welcomes visitors for its Summer Open House on August Bank Holiday weekend

A Lincolnshire landmark set in a historic estate is inviting visitors from across the region to spend the August Bank Holiday weekend in truly inimitable splendour.

The unique building boasts an eclectic appearance unlike any other, featuring a magnificent fusion of Baroque, Elizabethan

We’ll have uplifting live music from a trained pianist and light refreshments available in the manor’s main foyer, so we’d be utterly delighted if you’d join us on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August.”

Constructed in 1831 by businessman Gregory Gregory, the building has seen many varied uses - from a fine stately home

to a trench warfare and artillery school, home to an eccentric businesswomen who saved the manor from demolition and regularly held seances on the property, a retreat for the Society of Jesus and finally as an overseas campus for the American University of Evansville.

Situated at the intersection of the A1, M1, A46 and East Coast Mainline, and within a 1-hour 15-minute train ride from London, the district is a fantastic place to locate your business.

Newark and Sherwood is ambitious, forward thinking and has a growth agenda. The District Council (NSDC) is passionate about providing the best service possible for local businesses and those interested in moving into the area. The dynamic Economic Growth team offers a package of support to help new and established businesses access funding, training, property and data insights. Support includes events from surgeries to workshops and our annual conference. Discretionary rate relief is also available if proposals align with the local community plan.

The district’s town centres boast a strong independent offer and an engaged business community, with Newark Business Club and the local Tourism Action Group championing collaboration and innovation.

The largest town in the area, Newark-on-Trent, is home to 43,000 people. Schemes to the south of Newark, including the Middlebeck development, will add 7,000 new homes and 2 million sq. ft of employment floorspace, along with a southern bypass road and the dualling of the A46 to ease journey times.

Other developments include Tritax Park, a logistics park in Phase 2 of its construction. This scheme offers a fantastic opportunity for enterprises to expand and join a growing logistics sector that has doubled in employee numbers in recent years.

Looking forward, regeneration schemes will be taking place in Clipstone and Ollerton to boost local opportunities and aspirations and health, making the district a better place to live, work and visit.

Celebrating Agriculture Support

THE UNSUNG HERO OF THE FARM

WHY ACCURATE ACCOUNTING MATTERS MORE THAN EVER

Farming is more than just a job—it’s a legacy, a livelihood, and for many across Lincolnshire, a way of life. But behind the scenes of early mornings, long days, and changing seasons lies a crucial element that often gets overlooked: the farm accounts.

In an industry where margins are tight and conditions unpredictable, good accounting is not just admin—it’s a survival tool.

From crop rotation and livestock management to machinery investments and subsidies, the financial demands on today’s farmers are complex and fast-evolving. And with agriculture facing continued change—such as the phasing out of the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and the introduction of the Environmental Land Management schemes (ELMs)—farmers are under pressure to adapt, plan, and protect their futures.

Keeping accurate financial records helps farmers make sense of it all.

Clear accounts allow farming businesses to understand where money is being spent, how much is being earned, and where savings or investment opportunities lie. With good financial visibility, it becomes

easier to manage cash flow, budget for leaner months, and respond to unexpected events— be it a poor harvest or rising input costs.

It also helps with decision-making. Should you lease or buy that new piece of kit? Is now the right time to expand the herd or diversify into agri-tourism? These aren’t just gut-feel choices—they require sound, evidence-based thinking, and that starts with up-to-date, well-kept books.

And then there’s compliance. With HMRC requirements, Making Tax Digital, VAT returns, and the complexity of agricultural grants and subsidies, accurate records are essential to avoid penalties and stay on the right side of regulations.

But beyond compliance and paperwork, accounting has a deeper role—it’s about protecting the farm for the next generation. Whether planning for retirement, succession, or the long-term viability of the business,

farmers who understand their numbers are better placed to safeguard their legacy.

In recent years, more farmers across the UK have turned to digital tools and farm management software to keep their records organised. However, whether on paper or in the cloud, the principle remains the same: you can’t manage what you don’t measure.

So, while it may not be the most glamorous part of farm life, good accounting is one of the most powerful tools in a farmer’s shed. It keeps the wheels turning—not just this season, but for years to come.

LINCOLNSHIRE’S BREW REVOLUTION

DISCOVERING THE COUNTY’S ARTISANAL COFFEE CULTURE

Lincolnshire may be best known for its sweeping countryside, historic towns and agricultural heritage, but there’s another kind of crop quietly taking root across the region: coffee

From cobbled city streets to rolling rural backdrops, the county is experiencing a quiet but exciting transformation. A growing number of independent roasters, community-focused cafés, and heritage-inspired tea rooms are bringing depth, creativity and real heart to Lincolnshire’s coffee culture.

This isn’t about chains or quick takeaways, it’s about quality, care and local character in every cup.

COFFEE WITH A LINCOLNSHIRE ACCENT

There’s something special about coffee when it’s done right. Across Lincolnshire, a new generation of small-batch roasters and coffee shops is elevating the experience. Whether it’s a pour-over made from ethically sourced beans or a flat white enjoyed in a sunlit café overlooking the Wolds, it’s clear: people here are taking their brew seriously.

Many of these spaces are proudly independent and proudly Lincolnshire. You’ll find cafés serving beans roasted just down the road, with baristas who know the story behind every blend. Sustainability matters. Provenance matters. And most of all, community matters.

FROM FIELD TO FILTER: A COUNTY BUILT ON QUALITY

It’s hardly surprising that Lincolnshire’s love of craft coffee is thriving. This is a county that knows what it means to work with the land and value where things come from. The same pride that goes into growing wheat or producing cheese is now showing up in coffee.

Whether tucked into a market square or nestled in a countryside barn, many local spots are choosing to source direct, roast in-house, and keep their menus seasonal and simple. A cup of coffee here often comes with a slice of homemade cake or a locally made biscuit — not massproduced, but handcrafted, often just a few miles away.

NOT JUST A DRINK, BUT A PLACE TO BE

Lincolnshire’s coffee culture isn’t just about what’s in the cup. It’s about where you’re drinking it, who you meet, and how it makes you feel. Across the county, cafés are becoming something more — meeting places, creative spaces, and corners of calm

On any given day, you might find a quiet nook filled with students studying, a group of friends catching up over brunch, or someone simply pausing for a moment with their thoughts and a perfectly brewed cup. And on special days — like Armed Forces Day — these places often go the extra mile, providing a warm welcome for veterans and families alike.

It’s this sense of belonging that sets Lincolnshire’s coffee scene apart. There’s an honesty to it. Friendliness. A slower pace that invites you to sit, sip and stay a while.

WHERE TRADITION MEETS TASTE

In Lincolnshire, the rise of artisan coffee doesn’t replace tradition — it complements it. The region’s much-loved tea rooms continue to offer delicate looseleaf blends, scones and sponge cakes,

served with timeless charm. But they’re also evolving, with many now offering barista-made coffees alongside the classics.

This blend of old and new is part of what makes the county’s drink culture so appealing. Whether you’re craving the nostalgia of a pot of tea with plum bread or the boldness of a single-origin espresso, there’s something here that speaks to you.

YOUR NEXT CUP AWAITS

So next time you’re out and about in Lincolnshire — whether you’re exploring the streets of Lincoln, discovering a hidden village, or heading home after a walk in the Wolds — take a moment. Step inside one of the many independent coffee spots. Let the aroma wrap around you. Choose a seat by the window. Try something new.

You won’t just be getting a great coffee. You’ll be supporting a local story — one that’s still being written, one cup at a time.

RETAIL IN LINCOLNSHIRE SHOPPING WITH A LOCAL TOUCH

Across the UK, retail is changing—but in Lincolnshire, it feels refreshingly different. From bustling high streets to tucked-away boutiques, shopping here is rooted in community, character, and charm. It’s not just about what’s on the shelves—it’s about how it feels to shop locally.

WHERE HERITAGE MEETS MODERN RETAIL

Independent retailers thrive across Lincolnshire, often nestled in historic buildings that tell stories of the past. This blend of heritage and modern commerce adds depth to every shopping trip. Unlike many city centres dominated by chain stores, Lincolnshire’s high streets reflect the individuality of the people behind them—retailers who know their products and often know their customers by name.

According to the British Retail Consortium (2025), independent retail continues to play a key role in the resilience of smaller UK communities—something clearly visible across this county.

https://brc.org.uk/news-and-events/news/corporateaffairs/2025/ungated/lets-celebrate-towns-2025-launches/

A MORE MEANINGFUL SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

Experience-led shopping is growing nationally, but in Lincolnshire, it feels more organic. Local businesses offer more than goods—they create moments. Tasting locally made food, watching a craft demo, or getting advice in a home interiors boutique all bring a deeper connection.

For many, retail here is part of a day out. You might browse market stalls, enjoy coffee in a quirky café, and stumble upon a unique gift in a family-run shop. This relaxed, considered approach contrasts sharply with the impersonal pace of large retail parks. The Local Data Company’s High Street Recovery Tracker (2024) notes that areas embracing this style have shown stronger post-pandemic footfall. https://localdatacompany.com/

BLENDING HIGH STREET AND ONLINE

While tradition remains strong, many local businesses are embracing digital tools— websites, click-and-collect, even virtual shopping tours—without losing that personal touch. This hybrid model has become essential in recent years, particularly during economic uncertainty. The Office for National Statistics (2024) found that multi-channel retailers are outperforming purely online or high-street-only businesses in terms of customer loyalty.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/ retailindustry/bulletins/retailsales/april2025

WHY SUPPORTING LOCAL MATTERS

There’s a growing movement towards supporting local retailers—and for good reason. Choosing independent shops boosts local jobs, reduces environmental impact through shorter supply chains, and keeps high streets vibrant. Shoppers are increasingly making conscious decisions, knowing their purchases help preserve the unique identity of their towns.

The Lincolnshire County Council’s

Economic Strategy Report (2024) highlights local retail as central to community wellbeing and sustainability goals.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lincolnshire’s retail scene is evolving with confidence. From pop-ups to delivery services and redesigned shop spaces, businesses are adapting with creativity and care. At a time when retail elsewhere can feel detached, Lincolnshire continues to prove the value of connection, craft, and community.

Here, shopping isn’t a chore—it’s an experience to enjoy.

GRACE ELLEN

Grace is a self taught, professional artist based in Surrey.

Inspired by the great diversity seen in British nature and wildlife, each painting is truly unique and a snapshot of her experience at each location and of the particular day she visited. At first glance, Grace’s paintings are almost photographic, a closer look reveals a painterly quality. This is created through her intuitive use of different texture mediums: sprays and ink alongside the paint.

Growing up in a family of photographers encouraged Grace to capture the world around her from a young age and, now as a painter, it is a crucial stage in her work. Grace has an ability to compase creative and fulfilling

compositions through her lens that best describe the essence of each location. Her paintings are often from an eye level perspective, giving them an intimate quality that the viewer is invited to step into.

Spending childhood years walking in the Surrey Hills and holidays to Cornwall and the Lake District, inspired by her love of the outdoors, led to Grace choosing to study Animal Behaviour and Ecology at the University of Exeter. Learning about the conservation of such places, and the need for their protection, motivated Grace to start painting them and celebrating their natural beauty.

‘SHELF LIFE’, THE FLEETING BILLBOARDS OF THE LINCOLNSHIRE WOLDS

INSTAR’s ‘Shelf Life’ is an expansive artistic project for the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape. It challenges and explores the possibility for a sustainable balance between modern day farming and protecting and enhancing nature. Using print, billboards and film, the artists open a conversation concerning pressures on natural habitats and farming within the Lincolnshire Wolds landscape for Nature Calling

“As practising naturalists and artists, we dedicate ourselves to understanding and engaging in the natural world. Working across print, installation, and moving image, this is an opportunity to amplify loss, visibility, and urgency - not in a quiet, observational way, but with impact, contrast, and immediacy” INSTAR

Nature Calling is a new landmark arts project encouraging new audiences to better understand and connect with their local natural landscapes, improving wellbeing and inspiring a sense of belonging. Six of England’s National Landscapes have commissioned art projects and writers.

Inspired by the Lincolnshire Wolds landscape, ‘Shelf Life’ is a printbased sculptural installation and film developed by INSTAR artists Trish Evans and Nick Humphreys. ‘Shelf

Life’ is formed of three elements: a large-scale billboard artwork touring ten locations within the Wolds landscape; a film featuring the artwork billboard accompanied by the voices of farmers and landowners; and three smaller-scale touring billboards created in collaboration with Lincolnshire Young people. These billboards will tour a series of Lincolnshire festivals and events from June to September.

INSTAR’s artistic approach and project foster a new connection between the local community and the local landscape. ‘Shelf Life’ was commissioned by Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape for Nature Calling, produced by Chelsey Everatt and supported by Magna Vitae. Executive producers are the National Landscape Association and Activate Performing Arts. It is supported by Arts Council England and DEFRA.

‘Shelf Life’ is informed by how the landscape appears, how it has changed, and what is missing. Observing where nature has retreated and how fields for farming have expanded, the artists have engaged with local farmers and landowners, discovering pressures on rural life, farm life and wildlife. The artists have explored this tension between agriculture and ecology by considering the systems, policies, and social demands that drive a loss of nature and biodiversity.

INSTAR has created their artwork billboard ‘Shelf Life’ to be deliberately fleeting, reimagining and repurposing traditional marketing and advertising billboards as artwork and punctuating the landscape temporarily. The billboard is a sculptural intervention, a visually disruptive presence in the rural landscape, appearing and then vanishing as commentary on the artist’s observations. The billboard’s

Shelf Life, INSTAR artist’s visualisation, Nature Calling 2025

appearances in the landscape will be made into a short film overlaid with conversations with local farmers and landowners. The title ‘Shelf Life’ reflects and plays on the lifespan of nature itself, the term for a product’s usability span and the idea of nature being ‘shelved’.

The three small-scale billboards have been developed through collaboration and conversation with young people at local secondary schools and will tour festivals during the summer. Printmaking has been used as a method of commentary through its graphic quality and as a medium often used for acts of urgent communication.

INSTAR said: “Shelf Life reimagines and transforms the traditional advertising purpose of a billboard as a place to promote and share. We wanted to highlight the fragility of the human relationship with the natural world, asking whether we are ‘selling out’ on nature or ‘buying into’ nature. We are from Nottingham, and Lincolnshire is our neighbour, so we’ve spent many years exploring its coast and countryside. It’s a place that resonates and inspires our connection to nature as artists, naturalists and observers through its vastness.”

The artists have engaged approximately 70 young people living in and close to the Wolds to create the print artwork inspired by themes of hope for nature and natural habitats. The creative engagement and conversations with local young people inspired the artist’s work and the ‘Shelf Life’ project as a whole.

INSTAR said: “We return time and again to the Lincolnshire Wolds because it holds contradictions. It is at once ancient and evolving, resilient and precarious. The more time we spend here, the more we see how nature is not being lost in obvious, dramatic moments but in gradual erasure. There is a notable dearth of wildlife, trees, and meadows. It’s visible that the once prevalent diversity has now been lost to industry. Through ‘Shelf Life’ we are responding to this duality - to what is still visible, and to what has already disappeared. We have also seen that there are hugely positive efforts being made to change this through regenerative farming.”

Commissioned for Nature Calling in the Lincolnshire Wolds, writer and poet Ayesha Chouglay has written a four-poem short collection. Chouglay shared her notebook of observations, explorations, findings and completed written works with INSTAR to allow for ‘sparks of inspiration to naturally cultivate between both projects’.

Ayesha Chouglay said: “I approached the writing through the lens of an unexplored family connection to Lincolnshire; my mother’s side of the family was based there as far back as we can trace. I find it fascinating how you can feel so connected to a place you’ve never been to. I spent a week in Louth, walking and facilitating workshops at Hubbard’s Hills, connecting to people who know the area well. This piece was also created through the lens of my body, in particular my deafness, something which I feel makes me a very visual person. A thread that ran through this project was access, enabling as many people as possible to access the Lincolnshire Wolds, whether in person or remotely.”

Steve Jack, Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape Manager, said: “We have welcomed the engagement with Nature Calling and the continuing journey of this National Landscape Arts Council England funded initiative. The initial exploration and writing of Ayesha Chouglay’s visits to the Lincolnshire Wolds reflect and articulate the interaction between urban and rural experiences through the prism of her own life experiences and her family connections with the sheep farmers of old.”

“INSTAR’s ‘Shelf Life’ is a project seeking to utilise the media of print, audio and film to facilitate creative

discussions with local young people and young adults of the area, those that live and work the land, and the wider public. They have shone a light on the plight of nature across the Lincolnshire Wolds, an extensively cultivated and farmed landscape. Their artistic work empathetically challenges and explores how we can achieve a healthy and sustainable balance between securing home-grown food and drink through modern day farming whilst also delivering a significant step-change for protecting and enhancing nature across the family of protected landscapes”.

Kate Wood and Bill Gee, Activate Performing Arts, said: “Despite never having visited Lincolnshire before, Ayesha Chouglay could discover one side of her family history and weave these into her beautiful haunting poetry. INSTAR have enjoyed a huge response from scores of Lincolnshire young people in asking important questions about the Landscape. We are really looking forward to both the tour of the iconic Billboard and what we know will be a beautiful and thought-provoking film by INSTAR.”

Nature Calling is a national arts project over six National Landscapes to inspire and connect new and existing communities with National Landscapes in England. The project provides new ways for people to access and engage with the countryside on their doorsteps. Through six significant new artworks and writing commissions, the project inspires and improves wellbeing locally, fostering a sense of belonging to these special landscapes for more people. A season of events and artwork launches will be presented from May to October 2025 for all six Nature Calling projects.

The three ‘Shelf Life’ billboards will be popping up at festivals from June to August, including Sat 14 June: Go Festival, Sun 15 June: SO Festival, Weds 18 and Thurs 19 June: The Lincolnshire Show. Sat 12 July: Wolds WordFest, Sat 19 July: A Perfect Day Festival, Sat 9 Aug: Horncastle Horse Fair, Sat 23 Aug: Louth Teen Market

WILL BUTTERFLY POPULATIONS “BOUNCE BACK”?

CREATING A WILDLIFE HAVEN IN YOUR GARDEN COULD HELP

With lighter evenings and trees in full blossom, it’s clear that spring has arrived - a perfect reminder to start getting your garden ready for Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count.

Brimstone on Buddleia | Image credit Keith Warmington

After the declaration of a Butterfly Emergency last year, it’s more important than ever to create a wildlife-friendly garden.

The Big Butterfly Count, running from July 18 to August 10, invites everyone in the UK, from countryside dwellers to city residents, to participate in counting butterflies. Research shows that 80% of butterflies have declined since the 1970s and the Big Butterfly Count is a quick and easy way for people to take action for their survival.

Dr Richard Fox, Head of Science at Butterfly Conservation, said: “Following last summer’s Big Butterfly Count results, which showed a significant decline in the number of butterflies participants observed, we need everyone to get involved this year.

“Will butterflies bounce back or will their populations continue to decline following a terrible year in 2024?

“Your counts will help to give us a clear picture and anything you can do to make your garden more butterfly-friendly increases the chances of butterflies surviving, and your chances of seeing them in your garden.”

Creating a garden that supports wildlife doesn’t have to mean a messy, overgrown space. By making mindful choices, you can create a beautiful garden, terrace or balcony, soak up some vitamin D, and make a positive impact on pollinators like butterflies and moths. Here are five simple ways to transform your garden into a wildlife haven:

BE A GROWER, NOT A MOWER

If you have a lawn consider letting some of it grow wild! Long grass provides a rich habitat for insects and allows some species of butterflies and moths to complete their lifecycle by providing a place to lay eggs and food for caterpillars. It can also allow nectar-rich plants like clover, bluebells, and dandelions to bloom. If you’re not keen on an unmown lawn, consider a more structured approach. Try mowing a curvy path through an area of long grass or sow a mini wildflower meadow to help boost butterfly populations through a designated patch that allows wildlife to flourish. Simple changes can create a vibrant, wildlifefriendly space.

MAKE YOUR GARDEN A STEPPING STONE FOR WILDLIFE

Choose plants that attract wildlife and provide nectar and pollen for insects. Plants like buddleia, verbena, lavender, and marjoram provide nectar throughout the butterfly season. Colourful planted pots can look beautiful in patio gardens and on balconies as well as provide a resting place and sustenance for butterflies. With the right plants butterflies might even make your garden their permanent home!

AVOID PESTICIDES AND INSECTICIDES

While pesticides may target unwanted pests, they also harm beneficial insects like bees, ladybirds, and butterflies. Even “pollinator-friendly” products can contain pesticides, which are toxic to insects. Organic methods such as companion

planting are a great alternative. For example, planting basil near tomatoes repels aphids, while nasturtiums attract beneficial insects and deter pests. By carefully selecting plants, you can create a healthy, chemicalfree ecosystem in your garden.

DEADHEAD FLOWERS

By removing dead flowers, you encourage your plants to continue blooming, providing a longer food source for pollinators. Plants like buddleia, lavender, and cosmos benefit from regular deadheading and will keep your garden alive with butterflies through the summer. Plus, spending time outside not only helps nature but helps reduce stress, improve mood, and improve sleep quality!

AVOID PEAT-BASED COMPOSTS

Peat bogs are critical habitats for many native species, including the Large Heath butterfly. The UK’s peat bogs have formed over thousands of years but they aren’t inexhaustible. Peat extraction is a major threat to these delicate ecosystems, so switching to peat-free composts - made from composted bark, coir, or wood fibre - can make a huge difference. If possible, consider making your own compost from vegetable scraps, grass clippings, and coffee grounds for an eco-friendly alternative.

With these simple, thoughtful actions, you can create a beautiful, butterflyfriendly garden that supports wildlife all year round. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, these tips will help you contribute to the well-being of pollinators and enjoy the beauty of butterflies on your own doorstep.

Getting involved in the Big Butterfly Count really is as simple as 1,2,3 following the steps on Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count webpage at www.bigbutterflycount.org

TRANSFORMING SPACES

THE LASTING VALUE OF THOUGHTFUL GARDEN DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION WITH FULLERS LANDSCAPING.

A well-designed garden is more than just an aesthetic enhancement; it’s a vital part of a sustainable, functional, and enriching living environment. At Fullers Landscaping, we believe that a good garden design is absolutely imperative to achieving the outdoor space of your dreams.

After all, you wouldn’t install a kitchen without first thinking about the layout, what you want and need in it, and the overall style — the same care should be taken with your garden. Like a new kitchen, there are endless possibilities in garden design to suit all tastes, lifestyles, and property types. Whether you dream of a formal garden, a Mediterranean escape, a charming wildlife-friendly cottage garden, or an übercontemporary outdoor haven, thoughtful planning is key.

THE ART AND PRACTICALITY OF GARDEN DESIGN

Garden design is where creativity meets practicality. It involves selecting the right plants, materials, and layouts that suit your site conditions and your lifestyle. In Lincolnshire, where weather patterns can vary, smart design choices — like incorporating drought-tolerant plants or rain gardens — ensure that your outdoor space remains beautiful and resilient with minimal fuss.

When creating your design, it’s important to think not just about aesthetics but about practical elements too. Things like parking spaces, washing lines, and trampolines for the kids need to be factored in seamlessly alongside pathways, patios, and furniture areas. You might also want to consider the types of planting you prefer, any boundary treatments or walls you might need, and whether you’d like to incorporate features like water elements for that added touch of tranquillity.

A good designer will help bring all these elements together cohesively — making sure your space works for you both practically and visually.

WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER

Engaging a professional garden designer ensures the job is done right the first time, using the correct materials and thoughtful,

creative planning. At Fullers Landscaping, when we’re asked to design gardens, we pride ourselves on providing original ideas that result in bespoke, one-of-a-kind outdoor spaces. Working with a designer gives you access to expertise that not only brings your vision to life but also introduces you to possibilities you might never have considered.

It’s always helpful to come to your designer with some initial ideas or inspiration. Sharing your preferences — whether for a lush, naturalistic look or a sleek modern feel — helps us to tailor the design specifically to your tastes. From there, we can build a space that balances the practical necessities with beauty and innovation.

BRINGING YOUR VISION TO LIFE

Once your design is finalised, it’s important to be realistic about the time it will take to complete the work. Landscaping is often a bigger undertaking than people expect. Hiring professionals like Fullers Landscaping ensures the project runs smoothly. With our project management

skills, and experience, we can efficiently turn your design into a stunning reality.

We also advise customers to always check the credentials of anyone carrying out garden work. Look for public liability insurance, ask for examples of previous work, and seek references if possible. You wouldn’t trust a new kitchen installation to someone without proper experience — your garden deserves the same level of professionalism.

At Fullers Landscaping we don’t just design gardens — we build them too, providing a full service from first sketches to the final planted flower. Our team ensures that every garden we create is a perfect, long-lasting extension of your home and your lifestyle.

YOUR DREAM GARDEN AWAITS

Investing in professional garden design isn’t just about creating a beautiful space. It’s about crafting an environment that enhances your well-being, supports local biodiversity, and adds lasting value to your home. With careful thought, expert advice, and quality workmanship, you can have a garden that is not only beautiful but also a true reflection of you.

Let Fullers Landscaping help you make the most of your outdoor space — beautifully, professionally, and uniquely.

HOME & GARDEN TRENDS FOR 2025

LIVING BEAUTIFULLY, INDOORS AND OUT

As we stride into 2025, the world of home and garden design continues to evolve—embracing sustainability, selfexpression, and the importance of well-being. From vibrant garden sanctuaries to interiors inspired by nature’s palette, homeowners across Lincolnshire are rediscovering the joy of intentional, harmonious living.

At its heart, this year’s design direction is about creating spaces that feel good to be in. Whether it’s a kitchen that celebrates homegrown produce or a garden that thrives even in unpredictable weather, 2025 invites us to rethink the way we live with our surroundings—both inside and out. Nature’s Influence and Eco-Smart

GARDENING

The climate conversation is shaping gardens like never before. In Lincolnshire, where weather patterns can shift dramatically, the move toward resilient, low-maintenance planting is taking root. Drought-tolerant varieties—think lavender, sedum, and

ornamental grasses—are replacing thirsty lawns, while rainwater harvesting and permeable paving are making gardens smarter and more sustainable.

Equally, native plants are enjoying a moment of resurgence. Not only do they require less effort to maintain, they support biodiversity and help pollinators flourish—making our gardens both beautiful and ecologically vital.

GROWING WHAT YOU EAT (AND LOVE TO LOOK AT)

The rise of ‘edimentals’—plants that are both edible and ornamental—is quietly transforming back gardens into productive,

aesthetic spaces. Picture rainbow chard weaving between rose bushes or purple kale adding texture beside petunias. These multi-functional plants are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate, bridging the gap between beauty and practicality.

For many, this trend ties into a broader desire for self-sufficiency and connection to food. Raised beds, patio pots of herbs, and espaliered fruit trees along fences are becoming commonplace. It’s about making every square metre count—and savouring the rewards.

GARDENS AS WELLNESS RETREATS

If the last few years taught us anything, it’s that our homes should be places of calm and restoration. In 2025, this thinking has extended to the outdoors. Gardens are being reimagined as wellness retreats, with features like water elements, secluded seating nooks, and even small meditation zones.

Scented planting is a big part of this. Lavender, rosemary, and lemon balm bring not only colour and movement but

a soothing aromatic presence. Whether you’re sipping morning coffee under a pergola or taking ten mindful minutes among your pots and planters, gardens are becoming a sanctuary in an increasingly busy world.

BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN INSIDE AND OUT

Lincolnshire’s love for the great outdoors is reflected in the growing popularity of indoor-outdoor living. Bi-fold doors and expansive windows are creating seamless transitions from living rooms to patios. Flooring choices—such as composite decking in tones that echo interior wood floors—help maintain this continuity.

Outdoor kitchens and covered dining spaces are also on the rise, making it easier to enjoy the garden year-round. These areas aren’t just about functionality— they’re designed with flair, featuring elegant lighting, integrated storage, and furnishings that rival indoor comforts.

TECH-FORWARD AND TIME-SAVING

Technology is also stepping into the garden, but with subtlety. Smart irrigation systems adjust watering based on weather forecasts, saving both time and resources. Solar-powered lighting now comes in refined designs that add ambience without detracting from the natural surroundings.

helpful machines are particularly appealing for those with larger plots or limited time.

THE RETURN OF COLOUR AND CHARACTER

While minimalist gardens and neutral interiors have had their day, 2025 is embracing character in all its forms. Maximalism is making waves outdoors with layered planting, sculptural accents, and bold colour palettes. Purple is especially having a moment—from rich aubergine blooms to delicate lilac borders, this hue is lending drama and depth. >>>

Inside the home, colour trends are food-inspired and comforting. Picture butter yellow kitchens, pistachio green bathrooms, and the occasional splash of tomato red in textiles or tiling. These shades bring warmth and a sense of play—an antidote to the stark minimalism of recent years.

PRIVACY, COMFORT, AND PERSONAL STYLE

As gardens become extensions of our living rooms, privacy is increasingly valued. Natural screens—like pleached trees or tall ornamental grasses—are offering shelter from the wind and the neighbours, while remaining visually soft and inviting. Decorative fencing, timber panels, and pergolas with fabric drapes are equally popular, adding cosiness without enclosing the space.

In essence, 2025’s home and garden trends are about thoughtful design that reflects who we are and how we want to live. Whether you’re a rural gardener with space to spare or cultivating calm in a compact town courtyard, the trends this year empower you to craft a space that feels uniquely yours—one that nurtures both you and the natural world around you.

BREAKOUT TREATMENT

FOR DRY EYE DISEASE ( DED)

If your eyes feel dry, irritated, or painful for most or all of the time, you are quite probably suffering from Dry Eye Disease (DED), especially if you continually feel “there’s something in my eye”.

One in five, and nearly 800 million people worldwide, suffer from DED. Over 50% of females over the age of 40, and over 90% of menopausal females, are thought to live with this condition. More recently, the condition has become more common in all ages and genders due to environmental factors, use of cosmetics and medications, excessive screen use, and underlying conditions such as blepharitis and Sjögren’s syndrome.

The front part of your eyes is lubricated by a special moist film consisting of a mucous layer nearest your eyes, a middle, watery layer derived from your tear glands, and a third, outer layer, which is oily (lipid) and produced by special glands (the Meibomian glands) in your upper and lower eyelids.

If your Meibomian glands are not producing

Examinations by Dr. Janjua

enough oily film, the other lubricating layers will continually dry out and that is what causes the irritation and other symptoms of Dry Eye Disease.

This new therapy for Dry Eye Disease offered at O’Brien’s in Brigg is safe, noninvasive, painless - and doesn’t involve any eyedrops. It is known as Intense Pulsating Light (IPL) and Low Light Level Therapy (LLLT), though it may also be referred to as Photobiomodulation (PBM).

IPL uses thermal pulses to stimulate the Meibomian glands, and LLLT uses a specific wavelength of light to gently heat the eyelids. This revolutionary new treatment helps the Meibomian glands to work properly and therefore stabilises and improves the quantity and quality of the oily layer of the tear film. The treatment provides an immediate relief of symptoms.

THE HEART OF CARE

FINDING COMFORT AND CONFIDENCE IN LINCOLNSHIRE

There comes a time in many of our lives when a little extra support can make all the difference, whether it’s for ourselves, our parents, or someone we love dearly. In Lincolnshire, we’re lucky to have a wealth of options when it comes to care, all grounded in compassion, dignity, and a real sense of community.

From welcoming care homes with roundthe-clock help to flexible support delivered right to your doorstep, the county is home to trusted professionals who put people first. It’s about making sure that, whatever your needs, you can continue living with independence, safety, and joy.

CARE HOMES THAT FEEL LIKE HOME

Moving into a care home is a big decision, and one that often comes with mixed emotions. But across Lincolnshire, care homes are going above and beyond to create spaces that feel warm, comfortable, and filled with life.

With over 280 registered care homes across the county (Lincolnshire County Council, 2025), there’s a wide range to choose from. Some offer gentle day-to-day support, while others provide specialist nursing or dementia care.

Modern care homes now look and feel more like boutique hotels than hospitals. Residents enjoy private rooms, shared lounges, landscaped gardens, and freshly cooked meals. Many homes even have their own cafes, salons, and activity programmes, bringing people together and helping everyone feel part of a community.

Why families choose care homes:

• 24-hour support and peace of mind

• Help with personal care, meals, and medication

• A chance to socialise, stay active, and build friendships

• Safe environments designed with comfort and mobility in mind

• Professional care for more complex needs

CARE AT HOME: SUPPORT WHERE IT MATTERS MOST

For others, staying at home is the ideal option. After all, there’s nothing quite

like your own surroundings — the familiar sounds, the favourite chair, the little routines that make life feel normal. In Lincolnshire, more than 130 care agencies offer professional home care, from a few hours a week to full-time live-in support (Care Sourcer, 2025).

Care at home is highly personal. It could mean help with bathing or dressing in the morning, someone popping in with a warm meal and a chat, or support with medication and mobility. The focus is always on helping people stay independent, safe, and happy — all while remaining in the place they know best.

Why home care might be right for you:

• Stay in familiar surroundings

• Keep control of your routines and lifestyle

• Flexible care that adapts as your needs change

• One-to-one support from trained, friendly carers

Ideal for those with less intensive care needs or those wanting to avoid a move

WHICH OPTION WORKS BEST?

Every family’s situation is different — and so are their care needs. Some people love the community feel of a care home, where there’s always someone to talk to. Others prefer the privacy and independence of staying at home with tailored support.

The good news is, Lincolnshire offers both — and you don’t have to make decisions alone. Many care providers offer friendly advice, home visits, and open days, helping you explore what suits your needs, your lifestyle, and your budget.

QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST

All care services in Lincolnshire are monitored by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which inspects everything from safety and staffing to leadership and wellbeing. Most local providers are rated Good or Outstanding, and that should give families real confidence (Lincolnshire Market Sustainability Report, 2023).

But beyond ratings and checklists, what really matters is people. Lincolnshire’s care teams are known for their kindness, their patience, and their genuine desire to help others live well. That human touch makes all the difference.

PLANNING AHEAD, WITHOUT PRESSURE

Care doesn’t have to mean giving something up — it can be about gaining peace of mind, more time with loved ones, and the freedom to live life on your terms.

If you’re starting to think about care for yourself or someone close, now is a good time to explore the options. Whether it’s a short respite stay, help after hospital, or long-term support, Lincolnshire offers a wide range of trusted, flexible services.

NEXT STEPS

• Visit local care homes and meet the teams
