uerto Rico’s local business world has been in hot water since the beginning of the pandemic. With high prices on products such as gasoline and electricity, running a business has become much trickier and business owners have been forced to take tough decisions. For Puerto Rico’s restaurant industry, the threat could be more pressing than for any other industry. While inflation in Puerto Rico is at 5.1% compared to the U.S. 8.5%, other aspects such as energy and labor
costs have risen significantly. The distribution chains have been affected and the increase in interest rates are likely to cause a recession. While local restaurants managed to survive the economic difficulties caused by Hurricane Maria and the pandemic, inflation brings a different concern on how to handle the situation.
