SLOWLY BUT SURELY

Spain’s dole queue shortened just a bit in March, with a fall of just over 16 thousand taking the overall Welcome readers, figure to 4.8 million. The government said it was the It has been a simply tremendous week and the weekend was absolutely “BUZZING” and biggest March fall since 2006 and said it was the you have probably guessed why, the weather! eighth straight month of unemployment decline. Warm sunshine and clear blue skies, such a welcoming and thrilling end to a rollercoaster week, from orange sky to blue only in Spain and all in the same week. Sunday is wash down day, in fact after making my plans to hose down the patio, windows and whatever else needed attention from the muddy orange residue left covering everything outside I decided to take the dog for a walk and enjoy sunny morning. While on my walk I saw that everyone else had the same idea, from neighbours to shopkeepers the jet washers were buzzing and the hoses splashing. The job is certainly no easy task it takes a number of attempts after each drying session to actually get rid of this stuff, I suppose the pool cleaners will be actually earning their monthly fees having to really spend some time getting the swimming pools back in order for the season. To celebrate the coming of summer my family and I decided to enjoy a Paella outside with grilled King Prawns, wine and fresh baked bread….a taste if Spain at home on the patio, how good is that? Well let me tell you it was delightful and makes you feel grateful to be living here we then with the lighter evening it allowed us to settle down and relax before another busy week ahead. Although our headline is all about our recent success I would like to say we have been thrilled over the last week to have had so many positive comments from our business advertisers who are very impressed and happy to be part of our company expansion into other areas of the Costa Blanca. To be part of the VISTA CARD either as a business or a user and also advertise with The Weekly Buzz means getting your business results. Now you can extend this offer by attracting users from other areas it really is a great time for us all so please contact us for further information. As I had mentioned last week that April is a favourite month for me being spring time that normally guarantees warmer weather so far so good! As the warmer weather comes in we see the seasonal businesses starting to open with Terra Mitica Theme Park opening this week on the 11th April. With all of this to look forward to as well as the Premier League title race draws to a close with Liverpool and Man City battling it out and the Champions league quarter final second legs it’s an interesting time with the writing on the wall for Chelsea and a Manchester United holding Bayern to a draw, who knows what will happen. Please come along to the press office in the indoor market aisle 6 or visit us at our local sales office in the Old Town Benidorm. Come and see us, bring your local news and stories, members of the public and business owners can come along to place their advert and see make their very own design layout. Or call us on 965 020 250 or email office@thebuzz.es

184 people a day were evicted from their Spanish homes last year, with a total of just over 67 thousand being forced to leave for either not paying their mortgages or breaking tenancy laws. Catalunya saw the highest eviction rate, with 23.8% of the total, followed by the Valencia region with 14.6%, and Andalucia with 13.8%. The number of open cases of home foreclosures, however, dropped to 82,650 – down by 9.8% from 2012, which is down to a new law that gives judges power to prevent evictions if they believe clauses in the contract are ‘abusive’.

Having covered a few basic topics regarding Living in Spain and the Laws here, I felt it was time to make this column informative yet interactive. To see who is reading and who is awake! There are a broad spectrum of concerns that affect those of us living in Spain so if you have a query you would like answered in this column contact us via email or drop by our offices.

DIVORCE IN SPAIN

Q. My wife and I are both British but I continue to live in Spain running the bar we bought together and my wife has moved back to England- should I get divorced in Spain or England? A. The argument for jurisdiction can be a vast one but depending upon the best interests of the applicant a case can be made for applying for Jurisdiction in Spain. You must first meet certain residency criteria such as being on the Town hall census and having a permanent home here; albeit rented or owned. This option is good when there are good grounds for hearing the case in Spain such as disputes over money or custody. However due to the recent implementation of Court filing fees, coupled with the need for representation of a solicitor and a procurator, also bearing in mind any documents such as birth and marriage certificates which would be required would have to be translated and apostatized this can become an expensive process, so has to be weighed up against the potential benefits. The good news is if the divorce is amicable and any agreement over finances can be settled out of Court, then so long as one of the parties has a viable address in England or Wales then the Divorce can be issued in a matter of weeks and for considerably cheaper than in Spain, without you needing to leave your front room. If you have any questions regarding Divorce in Spain or any other subjects we cover , the come to our offices in Benidorm and quote that you have seen us in the Buzz to take advantage of our Spring offer for discounted consultations.

PROTEST R ALL Y POSTPONED The People’s Platform Benidorm 2014 called an emergency meeting yesterday and voted to postpone the Protest Rally to demand security improvements in town which was scheduled for Saturday 12th of April at 6pm. The reason for this is that there was a security threat with pressure from both inside the Police Force and from the local administration This comes after last week’s meeting in the SUP office in the National Police Station while organizing the security measures for the protest rally, when it was interrupted by policemen in uniform challenging the members of the SUP union. This action plus the discovery of a Facebook forum

It’s all you need for a great read. of these policemen with private interests threatening Manuel Soler, president and spokesperson of the SUP union and the People’s Platform Benidorm 2014 have been the detonating facts to momentarily call off the protest rally and postpone it to a later date when safety can be guaranteed. The People’s Platform was constituted in January and only a few days they personally received a visit from a particular member of the “Consejo Vecinal” (a collective of neighbourhood associations) to advise them that a protest rally was not the appropriate way to proceed in this situation and for them to come along to talk with the National Police Commissioner there and then to try and find another possible solution to this problem. During the past month members of the People’s Platform and members of the SUP National Police Union have been handing out leaflets with information about the protest rally but have been told by the Local Police Force (Police that work directly from the Town Hall and not from the government like the Guardia Civil or National Police) that they were not allowed to do this, they tried to explain that they were not propping without a license but just handing out public information which they are allowed to do but the officers reply was “Just do as you are told or we will fine you” We have been informed that the Subdelegate of the Government is being informed in writing of the actions within the police force and the administration asking him to intervene, take legal action and open an investigation to find out the reasons why the citizens of Benidorm are having such difficulty on organising a protest rally in a so called democratic country. As a consequence of these threats, the SUP union for the National Police announced on Monday that the union activity in Benidorm’s National Police station will cease until the situation is safer for them to continue with their activity, but that its members will still receive union service over the phone and the internet.

Media & Entertainment S.L.

Marco Baiardo, Director of Vista Costa Blanca and Barry Newlove, Director of TKO Media and Entertainment have announced the merge of the two companies and their partnership. Together they will be expanding their products across the Costa Blanca with The Vista Card already becoming a massive hit in the South. With the power of the Vista Card tourists and residents will now be able take it on their travels and use it in more and more areas. Barry Newlove says “It’s great for us to merge with Vista Costa Blanca work with The Buzz which is such a vibrant newspaper. It also means that we can offer our advertisers key coverage over a large part of the region via two papers, and also to bring The Vista Card to our clients and Courier readers”. The Buzz launched last year and is constantly increasing in popularity across the Marina Baixa, “I’m absolutely delighted to work alongside Barry and his fantastic team, this partnership can only be the start of bigger and better things” said Marco Baiardo. “We will be able to go from strength to strength after what has been a hectic and great first year for The Buzz. The merge of the two companies is great news for our readers and advertisers, it’s going to be exciting to see the impact that the Vista Scheme will have

over a wider area. By bringing our products together it means we can expand substantially in the future and we have some exciting ideas in the pipeline to boost both papers, as well as The Vista Card and TKO Radio”. Marco Baiardo started The Vista Card and the website four years ago and in that time many businesses joined the scheme which has continued to grow together with the Vista Online Guide that has more than 5000 visitors per month. The pocket sized Vista Whats on Booklet was introduced shortly after to compliment the scheme. The ever increasing demand of the pocket book led the way for the next stage, a larger publication, the Vista Magazine, with more information and content for expats and holidaymakers. After two years of publications the Vista Magazine which came out every month was transformed into a weekly newspaper publication The Weekly Buzz. Since the launch of The Weekly Buzz there has been a growing demand from readers and local businesses, which has made “the only local weekly newspaper” a huge success. One of the first steps taken by Marco and Barry was to bring the company to the very heart of Benidorm by setting a press office on aisle 6 of the Indoor Market. Drop in with your latest news and gossip, place an advert or simply just say “Hi” and pick up the latest edition of the paper. With TKO Media and Vista Costa Blanca joining forces under one name, the company will continue to grow and expand, delivering more quality and up to date news, music and entertainment, this will benefit advertisers, residents and holiday makers by reaching out to a wider audience covering both the North and South Costa Blanca.

The Rain In Spain “The rain in Spain stays mainly in plain sight all over my lovely patio and garden furniture”

The ‘Sahara Rain’ Phenomenon Saw Spain’s Air Pollution Levels Spike To Dangerous Highs, last week, the fine dust,

swept from 1500 miles away, is causes air pollution that can trigger hay-fever like symptoms and cause respiratory problems to flare up. Most of Spain was

affected last Wednesday and large parts of England and Wales saw high levels of pollution on Thursday which means it would have travelled around 2000 miles!, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the UK (Defra) said. “The elevated pollution levels have been caused by a combination of light south-easterly winds, the continental air flow and dust which has blown up from the Sahara desert.” The term Sahara dust refers to the sand and dust from the desert that can be transported northwards in the air when the wind is in a certain direction. It results in a fine layer of dust being dropped when it rains and it can annoyingly undo the cleaning of the car which has always been done it seems the day before. You might think Africa is a long way from Northern Ireland but Saharan dust travelled from Africa all the way to the south of Florida - about 5,000 miles - in the summer of 2012. Here are some snaps of last weeks “Sahara Rain” from Spain and the UK

"IT A KIND OF MAGIC"

The Lunch Club - Menu of the day only 9.50€ including 1/2 bottle house Wine The VISTA CARD REVIEW TEAM went along to the Magic restaurant in Calle Ibiza Benidorm to check out the new menu of the day known as the "Lunch Club”. Talking to restaurant owner Paco the man behind the very successful VINCENTS pub chain he explained "The Lunch Club is a day time menu that has been designed to offer a great choice of popular dishes using only quality products and ingredients, this is home cooked food at its best". We took our seats and admired the traditional British Pub Restaurant setting with comfortable chairs and nice big tables which allow plenty of room to spread out on, there are high chairs for the little ones and even the TV's are on without sound so the boys don't miss the big match, with Man Utd playing Newcastle so it was nice for the team to keep up to date with the score. We were greeted by Natalie, a great Irish smile together with hospitality that is sometimes hard to find, after having looked at the simple but inviting menu of FIVE

10

STARTERS & FIVE MAIN COURSES the team made their preferred choices, mine was Cheesy Nachos and the others had Fresh Mixed Salad & Chefs Pâté. I had asked Natalie what was the choice of soup as I like to know what's on offer, it was either vegetable or carrot & coriander. The food was served reasonably fast considering that Ray (head chef) was already faced with a queue of tickets from a busy start of the late lunch arrivals. I had put the rush of customers down to the fact that the beach had been the main attraction of the day considering the weather on Saturday was absolutely amazing so getting back late afternoon and arriving before the Lunch Club finished was the incentive for many people, and try the new and exciting menu for only 9.90€ including a drink! I was impressed with the Nachos baked in the oven allowing the spicy tomato salsa to combine with the melted cheese and accompanied by the odd hot jalapeño. The team were all hungry and there was only positive feedback and empty plates. It was quite difficult to choose from the mains even though Paco's idea of the menu is a short and sweet choice of the most popular dishes. It was made a little harder to choose from because I love my Pasta so was tempted by the lasagne but I also like to take a different view when eating out and try different dishes to what I eat most of the time. With this in mind chicken with parsley

It’s all you need for a great read.

and garlic butter or the pork with creamy mushroom sauce was attractive but I just could not help myself, the choice of tasting the lasagne got the better of me so I had to leave it to the others to sample the rest. The recipe used by Ray was not what I am used to but it worked, the sauce was made using some vegetables so if you like mushrooms and peas then it was great. I am always open to new ideas so I was more than happy, The others tried the other dishes which also included the Pork Loin Fillets, Chicken with Parsley and also the Gammon & Egg, the food was hot and full of flavour and what made the hit of the day was homemade chunky chips, cooked to perfection not at all greasy or soggy just perfect, a real change to the normal frozen standard you get served in many restaurants. The drinks are included so wine beer or soft drinks make the lunch menu price even more attractive. The portion sizes were medium so the fact it is a lunch time menu you would be pleased not to over eat and be comfortable enough to enjoy one of the five desserts on offer.

Go along and tell Bret or Natalie how the very favourable VISTA CARD REVIEW took your eye and try it for yourself I am sure you will also give The Magic Restaurant your own RECOMMENDED STAMP the same as we have.

Although there’s 30,000 of them it’s really a big Elvis club with 500 wanting an extra fix of The King in the Spanish sun every April.”

There are plans to expand the Benidorm Elvis Fiesta in 2015. Co-Producer Peter Phillips said “Although our Benidorm event has a long way to go to match Porthcawl it is already the largest Elvis festival in mainland Europe. With the accommodation infrastructure in Benidorm the time has come to take the event up a few gears in 2015. We are planning a large free event in the Old Town and expand the Fiesta to the Thursday. I can also confirm that we have agreed to stage the Sunday night finale in the Benidorm Palace. With the top twelve Elvis acts performing for the first time on such a magnificent stage this will be the most extravagant Elvis show ever staged in Europe. Elvis Fiesta 2015 will be on Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th April. Book Early to avoid disappointment, more info at www.elvisinbenidorm.com

A FEAST OF FIESTAS!

Taste the real Spain in so-friendly Sevilla Sevilla is one of the cities which you shouldn’t leave Spain without seeing. With its stunning Arabic palaces, gypsy quarters, impressive places of worship and orange filled parks and gardens, this city has a character all its own. Despite many of the older buildings looking in need of a slight make-over, the charm of Sevilla is lost on no visitors. Andalucian people are famously friendly and here it is easy to see why. Ask for directions and you’ll be almost taken to your destination. Sevillanos are proud of their city and happy to show visitors around. They are cool dressers too, their shiny shoes and tailored suits putting many a tourist to shame. Wander around Sevilla and you will come across tiled courtyards, narrow streets, flower filled balconies and shaded plazas. If you are lucky you may even see a spontaneous flamenco show with the eerie flamenco singing. Walking round parts of the city give many a visitor a feeling of nostalgia. Shoeshine boys (or older men) still vie for your custom, benches are often full of men with their heads buried in the local daily paper, strong coffee is still served in small mugs, and street sellers offer their wares in push-along trollies. Sevilla is the capital of Andalucia, the fourth largest city in Spain, with 700,000 inhabitants. The best time to visit is Easter for the processions, which are then

followed by the April Fair, filling the streets with colour and dancing from dawn until the early hours of the morning. Book your accommodation well in advance, though, as things get fully booked very quickly. Whatever time you visit, you will be impressed by Sevilla’s welcoming nature and open air feel. Sevilla is situated on the banks of the tranquil waters of the River Guadalquivir, which divides the city into two halves: Sevilla and Triana. The Guadalquivir (known as Betis by the Romans and as Betik Wahd-Al-Khabir by the Arabs) has had a major impact in the history of the city. The location of Seville is the point where the river stops being useful for navigation, where ships would moor and unload their commerce. It is at this point that the cereal producing region of the Guadalquivir Valley starts, and Seville has acted as a sea-port for commerce of agricultural goods produced farther west. Intense trade existed in the area from as far back as Roman times, then continued under Muslim rule, and exploded as Seville monopolised the new trade with the Americas in the 1500’s. As the monopoly was broken and Cádiz largely took Seville's place, the city entered a period of relative decline. In the 19th century Seville gained a reputation for its architecture and culture and was a stop along the Romantic "Grand Tour" of Europe. Seville has built on its

tourism industry since, playing host to the International Exposition in 1992, which spurred the construction of a new airport, a new train station, a bullet train link to Madrid, new bridges and improvements to the main boulevards. Tourist facilities are top-notch and the city is buzzing with festivals, colour and a thriving nightlife scene. To get around the best way to see the city is on foot. Beware of taxi drivers trying to overcharge tourists. Try to negotiate a price before you set off. The beautiful horse-drawn carriages are the nicest way to see the city, but be prepared to pay at least 20 euros for the treat. Sevilla does have a great public transport system. The buses run frequently and cover the majority of the city in their routes. You can purchase bus cards at many news stands. Trips cost 60c or 70c, and it costs €1.50 to buy a refillable bus card (which can be topped up at many newsstands). Five Things To Do in the city with orange a-peel l Visit the Alcazar Palace and its lush gardens, l Go up the Giralda tower, one of the last remnants of the Moorish influence on Seville. L See a Flamenco show. I Stroll around the Plaza de España - an attractive curved square near the city centre. A scene from Star Wars Episode II was filmed here. I Get lost in the Barrio Santa Cruz, stopping for tapas as you try to find your way out.

Christopher’s Calle Santa Faz 9 | Old Town. Benidorm

“Another excellent meal”

Reviewed 6 April 2014 We called in one afternoon during the week to book a table for sunday 30 march, they were busy painting.we did not know christopher had taken it over but assumed as he has been the chef for a long time the food would be just as good.we had the 4 course set menu which is very filling and needs a big appetite to finish all the courses.as always the food was excellent, soup to start which is home made lovely,i had cheesy garlic bread and my wife had pate which she says was very good. both portions were huge 4 slices of garlic bread for me and lots of pate and toast and salad for my wife.we both had roast lamb which is well worth the extra 1 euro with plenty of veg served separately and yorkshire pudding. 2 crumbles to finish with lots of custard plus bottle of agreeable red wine all for 21 euros don’t know how they do it.lovely waiter sorry can’t remember your name. hope they don’t change the menu too much see you again next time we are in benidorm.

“Lovely meal attentive service”

Reviewed 5 April 2014 Great restaurant very attentive service. Food was fresh and well prepared. Nice ambience to the place. Easygoing chilled place to eat

“Dolly & Pippa’s Review”

Reviewed 5 April 2014 Our first time in this restaurant, fantastic atmosphere, amazing food & great staff! We would like to wish you every success for the future, we’ll be back.

“Being redecorated but worth a visit”

Reviewed 4 April 2014 This was the old Deja Vu in Benidorm but the owners decided to concentrate on their sister restaurant in Alfaz, so bought over by Chris (who has worked there for 6 years) and his team. In the middle or redecorating when we were there but was beginning to look really good and the meals were well cooked and very tasty.

Jimmy’s Red Lion Carrera Finestraat, 3 Benidorm

“Small and Very Friendly”

Reviewed 29 March 2014 This bar is small so you need to get there early if you want to try the lovely food or watch sport. Jimmy has a wicked sense of humour and both he, and his staff, can’t do enough for you. Felt very comfortable right from the first visit to the last. “Freindly sports bar” Reviewed 15 March 2014 Good pint of Worthington’s good prices very friendly and Jimmy makes everyone welcome . Never ate in here but the food looks good . If I lived here I would probably make it my local.

“Jimmy’s red lion”

Reviewed 9 January 2014 Just returned from benidorm found Jimmy’s red lion by accident could not have found a better boozer.all the staff were brill specially Yvette and jimmy must give blonde a mention.we had some meals there the food was spot on jimmy could not do enough for you will be back in benidorm in December this year and will be calling in.

“Awesome food + great hosts = the best of times!”

Reviewed 11 November 2013 ust landed today and we were looking for food, looked on Tripadvisor, saw the reviews and thought we’d give it a try. It was the second best decision we made today. The staff were all friendly and extremely helpful, the food was exceptional and the welcome we received was the icing on the cake. If ya wondering what the best decision we made today was? Its when we decided we would be going back for our breakfast tomorrow.

“Wolves In Benidorm”

Reviewed 5 November 2013] We have just returned from Benidorm where we used Jimmy’s bar for breakfast every day which was superb and our meeting point before we hit the town, just like to say to you Jimmy, Yvette and staff thank you very much for looking after us . Coco Loco Beach Albir S.L.

Paseo De Las Estrellas, 1 El Albir

“Excellent location”

Reviewed 28 March 2014 When the sun is shining you cannot fault the location overlooking the bay. It is a place that we visit regularly when in Albir. Normally we only have drinks here but have eaten on occasions. The food is always well presented and are such massive portions that I seldom manage to complete them. Hence my reason for not eating there often. However when we have eaten the quality of the food has been very good. It is such a popular place that service can be slow and the waitresses can appear to be offhand at times.

“Good food but service slow at busy times”

Reviewed 11 March 2014 We lived in Albir and the coco loco was one of our favourites the menus are varied the portions are large and the food is excellent the location of the coco loco is in front of the Albir beach it is a good choice for a place to eat or chill out with glass of wine or a beer.

“Nice food”

Reviewed 9 February 2014 Been here a few times lately. The food is nice not out of this world but ok. Portions are huge! I don’t think that’s always a good thing though. Less is more. Location is fabulous right on the beautiful seafront of Albir. The only thing we didn’t think was that good was the service. They were very slow to come take our order and didn’t come back to ask if the food was ok or if we wanted any more drinks (which we did) one of us had to go up to the bar.

“it wins for midday afternoon brunch, snacking, coffee drinking” Reviewed 10 January 2014 Passed many a sunny afternoon here. The atmosphere is great , always busy, I keep coming back more because of where it is and how it is as opposed to the food. Service can be slow, but we are never in a rush when we come here. Food is ok/good, not bad at all, the locals all like it which is always a good yardstick to use. more of an upmarket beach side cafe scene but with better tun cafe food.

U3A MARINA BAIXA ON THE ROAD

VISIT TO NOVELDA - THE SANCTUARY OF SANTA MARIA MAGDALENA THE CASTLE OF LA MOLA The saying travel broadens the mind is true and Rob Parker the U3A Marina Baixa travel coordinator proves this each month with the outings he organises, always endeavouring to give new insights into this beautiful area and incredible value for money. Rob finds interesting places to visit for the travel group increasing our knowledge of the architecture, culture and traditions of Spain. On Friday 4th April 52 members of the U3A Marina Baixa left Albir at 9.15am travelling to Novelda and the Sactuary of Santa Maria Magdalena and the Castle of Mola. This is the most impressive church, reminiscent of the architecture of Gaudi in Barcelona with an incredible interior and when completed an organ which will have 700 red marble pipes, reminding us Novelda is the Spanish capital for marble. The organ was exhibited to the group using the organ pipes already completed creating a wonderful sound and atmosphere. The sanctuary is constructed by the side of the medieval remains of the Castle of La Mola. Many of the U3A

office@thebuzz.es members climbed the stone stairway to the top of the unique triangular tower of the castle offering wonderful views of the surrounding area. An unexpected additional attraction was the new high speed train travelling to Madrid. The second visit of the day on the itinerary was the Bodega of Salvador Poveda in the municipality of Monovar. This was founded in 1918 and operated today by his grandsons. Rafael enthusiastically explained how modern methods and technology were used in the production of the wines today. The tour ended in the cellar where the old fondillones rest and Rafael filled wine glasses with a bamboo cane for the group to sample. Samples of the wines on sale in the shop were available to taste and the group left carrying purchases they would enjoy at home. The next stop was lunch at Las Palmeras, Crevillente a restaurant used previously by the group and which always offers excellent value and the food is served to a high standard in a wonderful setting. It never ceases to amaze everyone how much can be packed into the days out Rob organises and still arrive back in Albir by 6pm. Telephone 96 586 1226 – Mobile 663 637 167 U3A Marina Baixa general meetings are held on the 4th Monday of each month at the Social Centre, Albir (near Mercadona) at 10.30am for 11.00am start. adidas To Lead Retail Adidas joins Revolution With Social Store Pharrell Williams

Sportswear giant adidas is taking steps to future-proof all of its Originals diffusion line stores. The retail revamp has already begun in Berlin and is expected to arrive in the UK in the coming months. The German location gives fans of the brand an idea of what to expect. Since undergoing the transformation, shoppers have flocked to make use of the Wi-Fi equipped lounge and mobile charging points. Bosses explained the motive as one designed to encourage 16-24 year olds to browse apparel for longer. “Shopping for this generation is very social. They need to have a place to hang out. The longer the consumer stays in the store, the more likely they are to buy,” Ted Mager, Global Head of Retail Environments for the brand, told Reuters.

Alongside the lounge, which has been strategically placed near the fitting rooms, and a ‘digital bar’ for charging devices, the made-over retail space has a young, urban aesthetic. The decor is stripped back to expose lighting, concrete and brick, while underwear is displayed in a quirky vending machine. The new Berlin store also puts an emphasis on footwear, generously stocking collaborative trainers from Moschino Creative Director Jeremy Scott alongside fresh colour ways of the recently relaunched Stan Smith tennis shoe. “Footwear is treated as the centre of the brand and the heart of the experience,” added Mager. “The consumer can buy everything, anywhere online. We need to give them a compelling reason to come into the store.”

Speculation surrounding the deal can finally lay to rest. Last Wednesday 27th March, Adidas announced a long-term partnership with Pharrell Williams. Rumors have been circulating for months, peaking when the artist performed at the Oscars wearing custom red Adidas trainers and the brand’s black leather track jacket. Pharrell’s Earth-friendly textiles company, Bionic Yarn, will be used in some of the label’s collection. “Working with a brand like Adidas is such an incredible opportunity,” Pharrell said in the statement. “From the classic track suit, to growing up in Virginia wearing Stan Smiths, Adidas has been a staple in my life. Their pieces are timeless. This is an exciting partnership for both me and Bionic Yarn.” Dirk Schonberger, Global Creative Director for Adidas Sport Style had this to say: “I am truly thrilled to work with Pharrell. He is a pop culture icon that never fails to inspire, not just through his musical talent and craft, but through his many other interests. He is the perfect fit for the multi-faceted company that is Adidas.” With both Kanye West and Pharrell now officially signed on, along with Raf Simons, Rick Owens and other designers, it seems Adidas is on a mission to be the coolest sportswear brand on the planet, one collaboration at a time. The first offerings from the adidas Originals x Pharrell Williams collection will be available this summer.

Babies living in smoker’s homes at increased risk of Cot Death

Testicular torsion

Approximately 1 in 2000 babies die due to cot death (sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS). Although the cause is unknown, there are predisposing factors that can influence the risk to the baby. Cigarette smoke is one of the main risk factors for cot death. Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk, the greater the number of cigarettes smoked, the greater the risk. Most parents are aware that their babies should be protected from the risks of exposure to cigarette smoke. However, in reality, try as they might many just can’t ‘kick the habit’. The absolute ideal time to give up smoking is prior to pregnancy. This goes for both ‘mum and dad’. Obviously not all pregnancies are planned but once pregnant, smoking should be stopped immediately. If both partners smoke it is much easier to face quitting smoking together.

Partners will support each other and ultimately provide a smoke free home environment for their baby. Research has shown that the success rate for quitting smoking is only 5% when no intervention or help is given. i.e. when somebody tries to ‘go it alone’ and give up by sheer will power only. There are various methods and treatments than can help you to kick the habit including medications, hypnotherapy, nicotine replacement therapy, nicotine tapering, acupuncture and electronic cigarettes. If you are planning a baby, already pregnant or have a young baby at home, there will never, ever be a better time to give up smoking. However, don’t try to quit without help. Do visit your family G.P. who will be able to help, support and advise you of your options.

Testicular torsion is the name of a condition where a testicle twists in the scrotum. It is normal for the testicles to move around slightly in the scrotum but in some individuals, the surrounding tissue is lax allowing the testicle to turn or twist (torsion). The condition causes severe pain and requires urgent medical attention. Those most likely to experience testicular torsion are the under 25 age group, in particular, boys between the ages of 12 and 16. However the condition is seen in younger boys and even newborn babies. Although uncommon over the age of 25, testicular torsion can occur in older adults. The condition may also be an inherited trait. Why is testicular torsion a medical emergency? When the testicle twists around, the spermatic cord that it is attached to, also twists. The spermatic cord contains the blood vessels that take blood to and from the testis. When this cord is twisted, the blood supply to the testicle can be cut off. If surgery is not performed within about 6-8 hours, the testicle may become damaged or even die in which case it will have to be removed. What are the symptoms of testicular torsion? Severe pain of rapid onset in the scrotum sometimes spreading to the abdomen. The testicle will also become inflamed and swollen. In some cases the patient will experience nausea and vomiting. In around half of cases, symptoms start during sleep. They also are more likely to develop during cold temperatures, following physical activity or an injury to the scrotum. Puberty is also a common time for the condition to develop due to rapid growth of the testis. Some boys or men will experience pain that only lasts a couple of minutes or so and then disappears. This may be what is called partial torsion or intermittent torsion, where the testicle twists but returns back to it’s normal position. If this is the case, planned surgery can be performed to fix the testicles in place so that emergency surgery does not have to be carried out in the future. What is the treatment? Emergency surgery is needed to save the testicle. This involves making a small incision in the scrotum, untwisting the cord and fixing the testicle in place to prevent a further episode of torsion. At the same time the other testicle will usually be fixed in place as a preventive measure. Testicular pain should always be investigated but in particular, severe pain or pain of sudden onset requires emergency care as soon as possible.

Dog Of THe Week Barclay

Barclay needs you and so do 200 others! This is Barclay but before I tell you about N332 WORKS CAUSE ACCESS HAVOC him, here is a plea for all dog lovers in the Benidorm area. Did you know that there Caraby was a victim of the N332 road works for an extremely long time which has is a charity run dog pound only recently settled, however the access has now changed as the slip road which for all the kicked out, takes you off the N332 has taken their original access. maltreated and neglected How to get there now dogs that otherwise would Heading to Alicante on the N332 come off at La Nucia, you will see Caraby but to starve on the streets, just access it you will follow the slip road round, at the first roundabout turn right, you will on the outskirts of the lively be immediately met by another roundabout which you will need to head straight over town of Benidorm. It’s a if going towards Benidorm Old Town, as soon as you have crossed the roundabout short taxi ride away and all there will be an access road on your right, follow this round to access Caraby. taxi drivers will know it the SPAP Benidorm Protectora. For some reason after a few months of empty pens we are fit to busting again after taking in more dogs than we can handle, but better here than on the streets to die. At the same time, the volunteers, the ones who give time freely to help these dogs have dwindled away. Over 200 dogs and only 2 people a day to walk as many as they can, well it just does not fit and dogs who should never trust a human ever again, have hope in their eyes when they see us, we have to ignore them. Its a hard fact, where have the helpers gone? Dog walking is great exercise, you get to meet people who care about life and you give back to society a bit of caring that can spread into hope for dogs who should give up, but don't. Please join us as we need you every Monday to Saturday between 10am and 1pm. There is always a lead volunteer there to help and it does help to bring your own lead which you can buy in many of the shops here. Now to Barclay, He came in as a young and gorgeous pup and he saw all his brothers and sisters leave for new homes. For some reason 20 months later he is still with us and still gorgeous. We have a calendar each year to raise funds and he's been our star twice! All the other featured dogs have got homes. Not Barclay! He loves a walk, is great with other dogs and even likes the cats that wander around the pound. There is nothing stopping him from being in a loving home, he's just not been found yet by his forever Mum and Dad. Could this be you? Please contact us on Facebook at Benidorm Dog Homing or call Maria on 0034 677 37 33 96.

APRIL ISSUE No.2 / 7th April - 14th April 2014 (#26)

It’s all you need for a great read.

Your weekly Horoscope ARIES

If you’ve got something to say, think it through and get it off your chest on Monday. You’re a great communicator now, but for the next couple of days, your attention is likely turned inward. Dealing with stuff around your place while mulling things over might be the best plan. Save the socializing (and the romance!) for Thursday and Friday, when you’re 10 kinds of hot. Get physical, too; being active gives you even more of a glow. This weekend there’s a choice to be made and priorities to set. A friend can help.

CANCER

Get busy on Monday. Work hard to get some tasks and chores out of the way, because the energy you’ve got coming around Tuesday and Wednesday is frighteningly great. Your instincts have rarely been better, and acting on them is absolutely favored. Romance? Go for it! Watch out for overdoing it at the end of the workweek, though, especially if you’re contemplating a financial extravagance. How will your actions now impact the future? This weekend, the little things, like sweet interactions and intervals of peace and quiet, mean a lot.

LIBRA

TAURUS

Don’t hesitate to offer your opinion or let your feelings be known at the beginning of the week. Even — or especially — if it feels a little risky, it’s the right thing to do. Around Tuesday and Wednesday in particular, people are likely to embrace what you do and say. At the end of the workweek, however, your words are more powerful than you know. A little tact helps a great deal, so tone things down. This weekend, on the other hand, is the perfect time to turn it up. What is ‘it’? That’s up to you. Romance, maybe?

LEO

The big lion’s just a kitty cat as the week gets going. You may even be a little bit oversensitive. Let your natural warmth and affection show, and it’ll be returned in kind. And when Thursday and Friday come, look out! That warmth turns seriously hot, with your charisma making any and all situations electric. If you’ve got an idea at work or in romance, get it out there now. As for the weekend, your money may be uppermost in your mind. It might be a good time to eliminate extravagances and enjoy the simpler things in life.

SCORPIO

Move new agenda items, both at work and in your personal life, to Monday, when your brainpower is up and you’re feeling experimental. Over the next few days, you’re more focused on emotional angles. It looks like you’re helping someone else out with a problem, but don’t forget to work in some time for you, too. Around the end of the workweek, your creative capabilities are highlighted. This is a fabulous time for finding fresh solutions and finessing interpersonal stuff — and for fun, too. Your personal touch only gets better this weekend. Reach out!

If you’ve got the urge to make an unusual move or finally say something you’ve been thinking, slow down at the beginning of the week. A little extra instinct kicks in around Tuesday or Wednesday, informing your timing and actions rather beautifully. Give the credit to increased powers of observation and sensitivity — and try your utmost to carry them over into the end of the workweek. Career matters look tricky now, and finesse is better than flamboyance. When the weekend comes, though, you’ll be able to relax and de-stress. A sweet secret for you is also in the stars.

A new idea — or is it a new person? — deserves in-depth consideration at the outset of the week. It may take a concerted effort to find the time to concentrate on it (or them), especially because social stuff’s favored on Tuesday and Wednesday. But this exploration is totally worth your time. Ideas of ownership come into play at the end of the workweek. What’s yours is yours, right? If you’re clinging too tightly, maybe the answer should be no — or maybe. This weekend, your trust is rewarded, and life looks steady and sweet.

Wear something different and speak your mind with self-confidence on Monday. What’s unique about you sparkles right now even more than usual, especially interpersonally. Life may not be totally easy for a day or two after that. Be proactive about staying healthy, centered and supported, and you’ll be ready for an influx of what could be extraordinary stuff around Thursday and Friday. It looks like a relationship could be very positively impacted! Take care of little things this weekend. It’ll be immensely satisfying.

You’re so on it on Monday that it’s practically scary. It’s the perfect day to make plans and make moves — and make your feelings known. The next few days look far more low-key, or maybe they should. Take it easy and seek clarity in your thoughts; clear thinking could be elusive now. You can get back in action on Thursday and Friday, when work looks fun and your time after hours looks amazing. Anyone who can keep up with you is lucky as heck to be by your side. The weekend’s about sorting through a lot of communication to find the kernel you seek.

VIRGO

You’re all over the details as the week begins, but are you neglecting the implications of the bigger picture? Get help from a friend or mentor — someone with the great vision to match your current fine focus. You’ve definitely got something to offer them in turn. Whatever concrete plans you have toward the end of the workweek, whether they’re for business or pleasure, are in no way set in stone. Can you adapt? As far as the weekend goes, it’s just a matter of what you want to do with the awesome energy the stars are sending you. You’re fabulous. Work it!

SAGITTARIUS

Even you might find what’s going on around you unusual at the beginning of the week. Certainly there are more questions than answers, and the exploring might be fun at times, and a little scary sometimes, too. Keep your values firmly in hand and be ready for anything. Thursday and Friday look just plain lucky for you, though. If you’re making romantic plans, these are the days to choose! Your sense of humor makes you very popular now, one-on-one or in a group. This weekend, hurrying is a major don’t. Do things slowly, and do them right the first time.

PISCES

It might seem like opposite day on Monday, with people saying the reverse of what they mean, left looking like right and up seeming down. Hold on, because the next couple of days, while also mysterious, make sense to you in odd ways. Unmask somebody — or let your real self be revealed! You might be taken as overbearing at the end of the workweek, even if you’re just telling it like it is. Think about the delivery as well as the message. This weekend, feel free to speak off the cuff, act impulsively and have a terrific time.

• Place numbers in the grid. • Numbers must add up to the marker at the top or to the left. • Each number in a line must be different.

SUDOKU ANSWER

When we reviewed the TomTom Runner GPS watch last year, we pointed out that if you wanted to monitor your heart rate, you'd need to buy an extra accessory. But for athletes looking to seriously train their bodies, metrics on how fast or far they ran, swam, or biked isn't enough. So TomTom has updated the Runner GPS with a new Cardio version that now includes an integrated heart-rate monitor. The TomTom Runner Cardio and Multi-Sport Cardio GPS watches both include a heart rate monitor built into the strap that uses an optical sensor which shines light through the skin to detect changes in blood flow. It means athletes monitoring their physical condition during training no longer need to wear a chest strap synced to their watch. Like the original TomTom Runner and Multi-Sport, the Cardio watches use QuickGPSFix to track a wearer's distance and speeds, but from our previous testing it can be finicky and slow to lock onto your location. However, as far as GPS-equipped watches go, the waterproof Cardios manage to keep a slim lightweight profile, thanks mostly to the use of a four-way controller on the strap that keeps the display free of buttons. The updated Cardio versions of the TomTom Runner and MultiSport are available today for £240 and £279 respectively, which is about £70 more than their predecessors. But it means there's less hardware to wrangle while out on a run, which make it very much worth the extra cash.

Norwich City sack Chris Hughton

Norwich City have sacked Chris Hughton as manager with the club’s Barclays Premier League future hanging in the balance. A 1-0 home defeat to relegation rivals West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and replaced him with youth team boss Neil Adams. Adams, previously the coach of their Under 18s, has been handed the task of trying to keep the club in the top flight. Hughton's assistants Colin Calderwood and Paul Trollope have also been dismissed. Amazingly, Manchester United’s David Moyes is now

the eighth longest-serving manager in the top flight with 10 Premier League Managers departing their clubs this season and a total of 32 in English football. They are 17th in the table and five points above thirdbottom Fulham who they meet next weekend. After that, Norwich have by far the toughest run-in of all the relegation candidates as they face Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. The Canaries have been in the lower reaches of the table for most of the season, with a lack of goals their main problem. Their tally of 26 in 33 games is only better than Crystal Palace. Last summer, Hughton spent a reported £8.5million to sign Ricky van Wolfswinkel from Sporting Lisbon and £5million to bring Gary Hooper from Celtic, while also adding Johan Elmander on loan - but none of the moves have paid off. A statement on the club's official website read: "The Norwich City board has taken the decision to give the club the maximum chance to secure the points required between now and the end of the season to ensure retention of our Barclays Premier League status. Chris's achievement in guiding City to an 11thplace finish in the Premier League last season was an excellent one and he has represented the club with dignity throughout his tenure. However, the recent run of four defeats in our last six Premier League games and six consecutive away league defeats left the club with no choice but to act, with five games still to play

Tim Sherwood will be replaced as manager of Tottenham Hotspur this summer, Speaking ahead of last night’s Premier League game against Sunderland at White Hart Lane, Sherwood said: "I can't say much right now. What I can say is tonight is business as usual. The 45-year-old, who was appointed on December 23 as Andre Villas-Boas' successor on an 18-month contract, won 10 and lost nine of his 22 games in charge. After stepping up from his position as the club's U21 coach, Sherwood made a promising start in his first senior managerial role, winning five of his first six games. But a poor

recent run of results has seen Spurs slip to seventh in the Premier League and crash out of the Europa League at the hands of Portuguese side Benfica. Reflecting on Sherwood's expected departure, former Charlton manager Alan Curbishley insisted he was right to take the job but has paid the price for the side's recent form. Louis van Gaal, who is set to leave his post as Holland manager after the World Cup, is oddson favourite to replace Sherwood with Mauricio Pochettino, Frank de Boer and Jurgen Klinsmann also considered at the head of the betting.

APRIL ISSUE No.2 / 7th April - 14th April 2014 (#26)

It’s all you need for a great read.

Hamilton Wins Epic Bahrain GP Lewis Hamilton emerged on top in a riveting race-long

duel with team-mate Nico Rosberg in an epic Bahrain GP to claim back-to-back wins as the gloves came off for the first time between the two championship favourites and F1 2014 definitively came alive. After a build-up to the race dominated by debates and arguments in the paddock by some of F1's most influential figures over the sport's controversial new era of quieter engines and fuel efficiency, the thrilling action served up over the course over the 57 laps of racing around a floodlit Sakhir provided the first contrary evidence to suggest that perhaps not too much is wrong with the sport's 'rules reset' after all. In a race characterised by wheel-to-wheel duels between teammates, Hamilton seized the lead from polesitter Rosberg into the first corner and then just about held on for his first consecutive race wins since 2010 despite several periods of concerted pressure from the sister Mercedes.

Familiar story at Ferrari

Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen reiterate Ferrari need to keep working hard to improve the performance of the F14-T. The Spaniard and Finn finished ninth and tenth respectively in the Bahrain GP with the Ferraris appearing to be the sixth quickest team behind Mercedes, Force India, Williams, Red Bull and McLaren

during Sunday's race. After just three races Alonso's hopes of challenging for the World Championship are already fading as he trails Nico Rosberg by 35 points and the 32-year-old has lamented not having the straight-line speed to compete. "It is not good and obviously we would like to have extra speed and be able to battle with anyone, but at the moment it seems we are missing," the Spaniard told reporters. Having started fifth, Raikkonen went backwards in the race picking up just a solitary point as Alonso continued to dominate their intra-team battle."The start was really bad and I lost many positions and then obviously from then on it was hard to recover anything," the Finn said. Ferrari will have two days of testing in Bahrain ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix to try and improve their car and Alonso will drive on both Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Good Week MVG sitting pretty

Michael van Gerwen ended Peter Wright’s unbeaten record and moved two points clear at the top of the Premier League table with an ill-tempered 7-5 win, while Simon Whitlock was relegated during another action-packed night in Dublin. Phil Taylor avoided a bottom-two finish with a thrilling 6-6 draw with great foe Raymond van Barneveld, who is still yet to beat ‘The Power’ in the Premier League in 19 meetings.

Liverpool Aim For Perfect 10 Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on a 10th victory in a row when the Premier League leaders face Manchester City next Sunday. The Anfield outfit returned to the top of the table with a controversial 2-1 victory away to West Ham, their ninth top-flight triumph in a row. Liverpool's title destiny is in their own hands as they welcome both City and Chelsea to Anfield in their final five games, as maximum points will give them a first English title since 1990. Steven Gerrard's brace of penalties secured their success at Upton Park, with West Ham equalising even though Andy Carroll

30

appeared to have struck Simon Mignolet with a flailing arm in the build-up to Guy Demel's goal. Referee Anthony Taylor found himself in the spotlight again in the second period, pointing to the spot after Adrian tangled with Jon Flanagan, although the Hammers keeper appeared to get a touch on the ball. Rodgers told Sky Sports: "I thought we thoroughly deserved the win and we showed great character today. It was a brilliant win for us and keeps our run going. We were clearly the better team. West Ham had one shot on target, which was the goal." Looking ahead to the City clash, which is live on Sky Sports 1 on Sunday 13th April, he added: "It's going to be a great game. It's nine games on the spin now, which is an incredible effort by the players and the staff. Today was a really tough game for us, now we will recover and reflect on the game. It is going to be a magnificent atmosphere at Anfield. The supporters really urged us on today and we want to see if we can get 10 in a row." Liverpool V Man City Sunday 13th April 2.30pm (CET)

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE There was 1 Monday Night Game and 9 Weekend Premier League Games contributing to this Weeks Fantasy which produced 29 goals,6 clean sheets,31 yellow cards and I’m glad to say the Referees kept their red cards in their pocket. Liverpool have had an unprecedented 13 penalties awarded to them this Season yet not one has been given against Skrtel for pulling shirts on corners.Unbelievable Jeff! The Premier League is heading for close finish but so is this Season’s Fantasy League at the moment Abby’s Brigade have a narrow 1 point advantage over the in form Danielle’s Team Charlie’s Chico’s at the Summit.Anyone of the top ten could still win this Season’s Fantasy. There is one thing for sure it’s going to be the most open and exciting for Years. We can’t say the same for bottom spot where Heidi’s Team Pot Luckers are 47 adrift of Rachel & Kim’s El.Niu Baddies. The Junior League is all over bar shouting at the top and bottom. Abby’s Brigade will be Champions while at the other end Ben’s Boys will go through the Trap Door. Our Mark Carter Ladies Section could be interesting if Charlie’s Chico’s start to slip up in the coming Weeks as Laik’s Loonies,Hup Hannah F.C,and Kim’s Ginger United are all in with a chance of catching them.Down at the foot of the Table Heidi’s Pot Luckers are just waiting to receive the Wooden Spoon. Charlie’s Chico’s have qualified for a stake on our Cellar Bar Cert Tip selected by Ian Charman who earlier in the Season picked a Winner for Danielle.Could lightning strike twice C’Mon Ian. Our newly formed Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Leonard Knowles Construction has been dominated by

Sponsored by

Amy’s Brigade mainly because of her potent strike force of Sturridge,Suarez and Aguero who have collected 340 points between them in this Section. It’s a good job Aguero has been injured and Suarez missed the first 6 games other wise they might have declared by now! Wayne’s Team I Hope I Do Better have won Manager of the Week Prize with a top score of 51 points thanks to Manchester United’s Juan Mata who was this Weeks top Fantasy scorer with 15 points. They will now go into our Premier Imports Monthly Draw for a case of Wine along with 2 Teams Mark’s Salford Sausages and John’s Callas Crusaders who both got the lowest score of only 1 point.February’s Winner was Ann’s Army. New sponsor for April’s Manager of the Month is Peter at the New Perro Loco in Alfaz who provide a fine array of top class food at reasonable prices. The early leader is Wayne’s Team I Hope I Do Better with a 2 point lead over Wyn’s Wyndhams Chelski. Mark’s No Bad Losers are 3rd followed by Dyson D.C.11. Joe’s A.C. Eccles have won this Weeks Breakfast for 2 at Rafters sponsored by Kate after leaping up 25 places to No 86. Four Teams have made it through to Semi-Finals of our very popular K.O.Cup Competition and they are Kevin’s Birmingham Boys who will play Tich’s Team in the Semi while the one will be Kelvin’s Republic of Ashton against Gary’s Cupid Stunts games to be played Weekend 19th& 20th April. F.A.Cup Semi Finals are this Weekend so our F.A.Cup League comes into play.At the Moment Micky’s Woodside have a narrow 1 point lead over Wayne’s Team I Hope I Do Better at the top. Teams with Arsenal Players or Hull City Players have the best chance of winning this League.

Gunned down by the Blues

Everton produced an excellent performance to defeat Arsenal 3-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday and move to within a point of fourth place with a game in hand on the Gunners Martinez’s tactics saw him switch to 4-3-3 with Lukaku unusually stationed on the right wing to target Arsenals Monreal, who was replacing injured

left-back Kieran Gibbs. Leon Osman, who had looped Everton’s first shot of the match just past Wojciech Szczesny’s left-hand post, got in a tangle with Bacary Sagna, resulting in a gash that opened up after appearing to catch a boot in the face. It forced Osman’s immediate exit down the tunnel after just nine minutes, but brought Ross Barkley to the fore in a more disciplined role on the left than he has been used to playing under Martinez. However, with Gareth Barry providing support behind, the 20-year-old was still able to express himself and was instantly installed as the focal point of Everton’s attacking play. The goal, however, came from Arsenal’s inability - or unwillingness - to engage opponents. Leighton Baines was allowed to carry the ball 30 yards into enemy territory unchallenged and with that amount of time he picked out Lukaku with a low cross. Although the Belgium striker was denied by Szczesny, Naismith was in the right place at the right time to ram home the rebound. Twenty minutes later, Belgian player Romelu Lukaku made a bad situation even worse for Arsenal. The striker on loan from Chelsea scored Everton’s second goal. Arsene Wenger’s changes came too late. He brought both Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on at the same time when the Gunners conceded their third, an own-goal scored by Arteta.

Massimo Cellino's Leeds takeover

The Football League must decide whether to officially ratify the takeover of Leeds United by Massimo Cellino at a board meeting on Thursday as questions remain over how long the Italian businessman will remain in control at Elland Road. Cellino is due to arrive in England from Sardinia on Monday to assume his role as president of the Championship club after an independent lawyer overturned the Football League's decision to bar him from becoming an owner. The League had blocked Cellino's takeover on March 24, ruling the 57-year-old's conviction of tax evasion in a Sardinia court on March

18 disqualified him under its owners and directors test. Cellino secured an unexpected victory against that decision on Saturday following a successful appeal. Cellino, who is now clear to complete his takeover, said he will now set about transforming Leeds into a Premier League force, but the saga has not yet run its course.
