Successful Benidorm Pride 2013

By Irena Bodnarec enidorm was a rainbow of colour last Saturday afternoon as the annual Benidorm Pride procession took place – the highlight of the weekend events. Participants gathered at the Rincon de Loix end of the Levante Beach, which was the start point, to compare who had the most eye catching costume. There was certainly no shortage of sequins, feather boas or glitzy high heels among the hundreds that were taking part.

B

The parade went along the Levante sea front where both locals and holiday makers jostled for pole position to see the amazing display, which ended up at the Town Hall Square in the Old Town. Music was played from many of the floats and cars, adding to the party atmosphere and there was even an open top double decker bus which was hired specially for the occasion – and a stretch limo carried Lady Gaga (obviously not the real one but Benidorm´s tribute act).

Traffic came to a standstill on the Avd Mediterraneo as the parade crossed over it and many passengers jumped out of their cars to take pictures – not quite believing what they were seeing! It´s certainly true that the Brits know how to celebrate. The event has now got everyone in the party mood, ready in anticipation of the British Fancy Dress Day on Thursday 14th November – which gets bigger and better every year. read more p3

I’ve known Sammy for a number of years and it was no surprise this year to find out that this bright young guy who is very well liked and popular around town was playing a very vital role together with the organisation of the ALGTB, joint efforts were made to promote and host Pride 2013. So I called him for a chat and to get his opinion on the event. Firstly I must say that from what I had seen and heard everyone seemed upbeat and very complementary on the event and the organisers. There have been loads of Facebook posts sending congratulations and thank you’s, so how did Sammy take this feedback. “It’s been a great success and there were loads more people than last year, more Scandinavian, German and Dutch” ok so I asked “what was behind the success and how did the planning and organisation of the event unfold”. Sammy replied “there were many helpers behind the scene, bar owners especially from the gay scene, as well as loads of acts from all over Spain and from the UK who performed for free”. Cindy from UK and Dame Daws (singer in UK) local acts Girls Aloud and Lady Gaga tribute with her dancers headlined the show. Sammy continued “the success is also due to the town hall organising the cultural side as well as having the events for a week from 8th - 15th September”. “But there was also a lot of negativity between some of the bar owners and many had not shown any interest in the event and were more interested in the extra revenue for themselves than supporting the actual Pride.” In general it seemed there could have been a lot more done from the gay community of Benidorm and the gay bars and restaurant owners.

So I asked was the event self funded or were there some sponsorship. Sammy told me that the Town hall had provided the stage and sound system along with most things to do with the actual main event, but there were no real sponsors as such and no private backing. “In fact I had printed my own flyers and posters and really used my social networking to help with the promotion.” Sammy was explaining that although the event went well there were lots of things to improve on and much more needs to be done to attract the international gay community. “If the Mayor of Benidorm and the other politicians are listening we want more international publicity and more facilities for the event.” “There were no local banners hanging from the streets or bill boards promoting the event” Normally with this type of event you would see the town hall make a lot of visuals giving the local people information to what’s going on, but I had not seen anything myself. Although Pride is attracting thousands of visitors each year there is just not enough being done to boost the interest, Sammy said “the first year we saw the Mayor come onto the stage and we then thought this was just the start of good things to come but now it seems that the support from local government to really be behind the Pride event is somewhat lacking”. Sammy “We need more input from local business, more stalls, more toilets and more publicity”. “Together we can make Benidorm Pride a major annual event”. “A special thank you to all of the acts and helpers without you all there would be no Pride”!!! Sammy Cruz Thank you

Visitors come back year after year often arriving the Saturday before so this year will be 9th September and staying for one week. Thousands of English visitors come

to this annual event and the numbers just keep growing year after year it really is an amazing event. The fancy dress costumes are original and are probably the best you will see anywhere in the world. November in Spain is normally sunny and warm last year the sun was out and the sky was blue after a shocking period of rain and high winds that are really not common in November. The crowds spill onto the street and the English Square is completely full of groups. Many roads are taped off by the local police, allowing the revellers to safely wonder into the street. So if you are up for the biggest party here in Benidorm you should start to find your costume and get planning for a week of fun.

MATEO is back in town

buzz@vistacostablanca.com

the morning I should think that Derren was an expert in taking photos with a multitude of cameras and mobile phones! There are still a few more opportunities to meet Jake. He will be here again this coming weekend - Saturday 21st at 10.30am and Sunday 22nd at 11.00am signing his calendar at the Flash hotel then the following weekend on Saturday 28th at 10.30am, again at the Flash. There were quite a few men in the queue getting one for their ladies back home – obviously out for a lads weekend and seizing the chance to score some brownie points! If you can´t make it here then don´t be disappointed as you can shop online at “jakecanusoshop.com” – it will be signed but obviously not personalised as they are here. Remember, there are now less than 100 days until Christmas…

By Irena Bodnarec

Actor Jake Canuso, better known as the sleazy Spanish barman Mateo from the ITV hit comedy series, was back in Benidorm this weekend. On Saturday he was promoting and selling his 2014 calendar at the Flash Hotel in the Rincon de Loix. There was a serious queue of Mateo fans – mainly ladies, holding their cameras ready for the picture of their lives when it came to their turn. Jake took his time to speak to every single person before signing the cover and apologised for the wait – such a gentleman, then had a picture taken with them. An added bonus was the fact that writter and creator Derren Litten was the one taking the photo for them. By the end of

VISTA TEAM CHAT WITH JAKE CANUSO

By Irena Bodnarec

Recently Jake spoke about his early career and shared some family information with us. “My parents emigrated from Italy in the sixties, they had seven kids and we all moved to Switzerland, so that they could give us a better life, in Italy we were essentially peasants.” He was expecting members of his family, including his parents, to come and visit once filming had finished and planned to show them the whole of Benidorm. Will they prefer the old town or the new town we asked? “I am a huge fan

of tapas, so I love Tapas Alley in the Old Town, love love love it. I also intend to take my Mum and sister and show them the New Town, especially for shopping, my Mum loves a bargain and will be delighted that she can buy a bra for 3 euros! There really is something for everyone here.” “The first year we filmed we were told it wasn’t so good for tourism in Benidorm, but we have never shown the place in a bad light. We are depicting certain package holidays with a broad mix of characters, and of course the lovable, silly Spanish waiter who actually never gets the girl! Now the series is so popular it’s great and Benidorm is very unapologetic, you can be drunk, sing karaoke, no one judges.” So what happens when the cast go out these days? “For us it’s not really possible to go out now as we are always recognised wherever we go... If we go, for instance, to The Stardust, people are a little drunk, a little excited because they love the show, pulling at you and we’re tired wanting to relax but you don’t want to let the fans down. I feel quite seasoned now with accommodating fans and in between filming I come out and meet them for an hour or so, it can really make someone’s day or holiday just to take a couple of minutes to take a photo with them.” Where do you like to go out then? “Oh I love a little restaurant called El Cranc, its set right by the rocks and does beautiful seafood, it’s near Altea,” and to go for holidays? “Visiting family in Switzerland or my sister who lives in Mexico.” Jake recently played a role in TV show The Bible, Daniel, a softly spoken bearded character quite a departure from Mateo. Are there any particular parts you’d like to play? “Well I’d love to play a baddy, the fun parts are always the baddies, definitely.” Jake would make a great villain, casting directors take note!

The reptile experts of nature and animals park Terra Natura Benidorm have managed captive breeding of King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), considered the largest venomous snake in the world. Such is the difficulty of reproducing this species in captivity in Spain has been achieved only twice, the second time being this has been achieved reproduction of this species in our country and the first in the Valencian Region. The process of reproduction of this species is extremely complex because if you make a mistake there is a great risk that the male kill and devour the female during coutship, as it is a ofiofago reptile that only feeds on other snakes. The excitement experienced by the male during courtship and their larger size further increases the risk that occurs when intercourse ends, when he can try to eat the female . The pair of king cobras of the complex, a male of nine years and four meters long and a female of four years, have had four offspring of 18 eggs female

laid almost three months ago. The other 14 eggs have been infertile, something very common in young females of the species. Despite its 35 inches and light weight of 18 grams, the pups at birth are loaded with a potent neurotoxic paralyzing venom. Two of the babies who are born will be transferred to the London Zoo to help the Cobra conservation plan, in which Terra Natura Benidorm participates actively. About this species, which is included in the Agumbre Research Station in India, performed numerous studies and research. The calves born in the park will be part of such studies in order to assess the adaptation of individuals in captivity and its viability in future reintroductions through telemetry method, which will compare its performance with that of other wild birds. Experts from the exhibition of venomous creatures of the complex provide, at present, an exhaustive control to feed the young and care for the survival of the four small reptiles. The visitors can see one of the pups in the park volcano.

From the age of 17, he started to study in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, several courses of, body expression, singing, dancing and various performing arts, whilst dazzling everyone with his amazing imitation of Michael Jackson. In 1996 Sony Music Entertainment named him the official double and the 18 year olds career began. It took him on main stages across Spain, England, France and

Spanish Fish ‘n’ Chips?

Yes it’s true you can now find real Spanish fish n chips at the new tapas bar “Tabernita del Sur” located at the top of the famous tapas alley opposite La Cava Aragonesa Old Town Benidorm.

Not only will you be amazed at the choice of fresh traditional cuisine from the region of Andalucia but also the fish n chips are actually wrapped up in paper just like the old days. A perfect cone shape which is easy to hold and enjoy on the go or to sit down and share with friends. The cone is known as a cucurucho and is a popular way of serving food in the south of Spain with a mixture of foods that then can be shared by tearing open the cone and

using the paper to spread out onto the table. The fish is a white fish called Merluza (Hake) and is cooked in a secret recipe, marinated then fried in a light batter in olive oil, served in little pieces that are easy to pick up along with the thin crispy fries. If you like to try other dishes then my recommendation is the tear drop chicken and the Gambitas Rojas eaten whole in a light crispy batter. It was strange at first to eat a whole Gambita (baby prawn) head and tail on but apparently that’s the way to get all of the flavour and taste. I was more comfortable with the chicken pieces really tasty and moist, perfect with a nice cold Spanish beer. I really do recommend this style of eating it’s a great way for meeting up in a group having beers with the tasty food in an informal setting but filled with a traditional Spanish atmosphere and music.

NATIONAL POLICE DETAIN 3 INDIVIDUALS FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING

buzz@vistacostablanca.com

9 September 2013 National police agents have arrested three people in Orihuela Costa (Alicante), for an alleged crime of drug trafficking and vehicle theft. Investigations were started by agents having knowledge of the possible existence of a criminal group engaging in the trafficking and sale of narcotics in the town. For this reason, an investigation began in order to achieve the full identification of the network crime, as well as the area whereby the distribution and sale of the substance was being carried out. In the course of the investigation, officers observed as the detainees of British and Irish nationality, were frequently seen in recreational areas in the towns of Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, and were using high-end cars to move around. Subsequently, the officers involved to identify its occupants, as well as to inspect the vehicle in which they were traveling, it then turned out that the vehicle had been stolen in the United Kingdom and was being sought by INTERPOL. Hidden inside and later intervened: 241 ecstasy tablets, 17 tablets of Viagra, 59 pills of anxiolytics, 4 wraps of cocaine and hashish. They distributed the drugs in the recreational areas of Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, mostly to tourists of British nationality. With this operation carried out by the Judicial Police of Alicante Provincial Brigade, a major black point of sale of drugs in recreational areas has now been dismantled. The three detainees, aged between 30 and 32 years old, all have a history for similar facts, have been ordered to appear in the magistrate's court.

What’s Hot and What’s Not tells us. Duke of Wellington. Avenida Del Derramador. 03503 Benidorm, Spain Ranked #288/415 restaurants in Benidorm

“Alright!”

Reviewed August 23, 2013 Ate here a few times. Nice service from the little blonde lady, but the woman with the brown hair could have at least smiled whilst serving and actually looked like she was listening to you, at least try and look a little happy. Food was average, nothing more, nothing less.

“Never again!!!”

Reviewed August 18, 2013 Whilst on a family holiday in Benidorm we decided to venture to the duke of wellington for a traditional roast dinner with all the trimmings..... It appeared, a frozen beef ready meal...still frozen!

“Fair price for Sunday roast”

Reviewed August 11, 2013 Situated near sunday market. Food was same as back home and good (but not great). Worth a visit. Will try cod and chips later in the week Terrace Bar Avenue Murcia, Benidorm, Spain Ranked #45/415 restaurants in Benidorm Cuisines: British

“Little one man pub”

Reviewed August 2, 2013 This little bar off the yellow brick road has good cheap drinks (careful of the shorts very generous measures) excellent food. 3 quizzes a week for those wanting a quiet night

“Excellent food”

Carlalilly Reviewed June 24, 2013 Ate here a few times on our trip to benidorm food is always fresh and tasty, could have a better stock of food but would recomend it to anyone

“Very friendly, great food”

Reviewed June 10, 2013 We visited the Terrace Bar in Benidorm yesterday (9 June 2013) for lunch. It was very busy so obviously a popular bar and the owner, Paul, is from Swindon which is our neck of the woods. He caters for the British visitors so offers good, wholesome British food. I ordered a Sunday lunch and my husband opted for a salad...

Restaurante Villa Romana Ctra. Altea-La Nucia, Km 5, 03530 La Nucia, Spain Ranked #16/18 restaurants in La Nucia Cuisines: Belgian, French, Italian, Bistro

“Lobster extravaganza”

Reviewed September 9, 2013 NEW We went to this restaurant and sat on the lovely terrace which has views over the mountains and down to the sea. It is a family run restaurant the service is very good and the food even better! You should go and try it yourself. It is situated on the CV760 road that runs from Altea to La Nucia.

“Great food and even better on a Wednesday during the summer”

Reviewed July 16, 2013 via mobile We go to Villa Romana regularly and especially enjoy it in the summer when the lobsters are on the menu! The food is always good and the service is very friendly.

“Improvement”

Reviewed March 11, 2013 We visited here once again with friends in the evening, service was excellent (Only another table besides ourselves) and the food much better - the chef came and had a word with us - very pleasant evening!! Tanuki Bulevar de los musicos 21, El Albir, L'Alfas del Pi, Spain. 966 865 544 Ranked #14/49 restaurants in El Albir Cuisines: Japanese

“Very good japaneese restaurant. Best restaurant in Albir”

Reviewed August 23, 2013 Wide selection of different dishes. Much more then just Sushi. We have tried many and all have been excellent. Some of the makis are the best we have ever had! Exciting dessert menu - Wasabi icecream.... Professional and pleasant staff. Highly recommended!

La Roca Restaurant Cami vell del Far, 2, 03581 El Albir Cuisines: International

“Nice restaurant and good food”

Reviewed September 10, 2013 NEW We were a large party, 15 people, and they catered for us very well. The food was very good, the ribs, duck & steak particularly so. We returned a second time on our last evening, a Thursday evening, this time the service was not quite as good but in fairness they were very busy and didn't seem to have many...

“Absolute brilliant”

Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile This is probably the best restaurant in albir I just love the ribeye steak with the gambas they are the best!

“The best steak in Albir”

Reviewed April 8, 2013

“Excellent”

Reviewed August 5, 2013 Visited La Roca with a group of 6 and we all was very satisfied with the great taste and a great friendly service. Will visit again when we arrange to have such a restaurant. we will be back.

“Do believe the reviews it is that good”

Reviewed August 4, 2013 via mobile I'm a skeptic by nature... But the steak I just ate was one of the best I've had and I have had steak all over the USA Texas Miami Washington etc and this was a good one. My wife's hake was excellent as well. Good starter and friendly service lovely location.

The shop is in the far right hand corner on the other side of the coach stops – opposite the FlyBus stop and opens Monday to Saturday 9.00am until 8.00pm (closed on Sunday). It is virtually a tiny doorway so easy to miss if you didn´t know it was there…

By Irena Bodnarec Heading back to the airport after your fantastic holiday here you´ll be pleased to see something familiar – Costa Coffee! They have opened a brand new outlet on the departures level – and sensibly it is located outside, allowing smokers to enjoy a last cigarette with their coffee before heading through security! The kiosk is open from 7.00am until 10.00pm and as well as coffee you can purchase tea and the usual cold drinks which they serve – although a limited version in comparisson to what you would find in the UK. There are also sandwiches available which you can buy to take with you for you flight if you don´t fancy the offerings on the plane. For those that have forgotten to purchase their cigarettes there is an official tobacco shop located 25

Your weekly

Horoscope Apply yourself to taking judicious action instead of trying to get a million things done at once on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday - otherwise you’ll end up feeling frenzies and getting very little accomplished. By Thursday and Friday, you’ll discover a groove that feels comfortable, productive and energizing to you. The more you listen to your intuition, the more you’ll be able to do. Over the weekend, social obligations crowd your daily planner. Pick and choose. Attend only those activities that really get you excited.

On Monday you realize that there’s a big difference between taking action and reacting. The former is calm and cares about doing the right thing, no matter how it looks. The latter has qualities of over-compensation and worries about how other people will react. You have the courage of your convictions by midweek, thanks to this epiphany, and you do what’s best for all parties involved. By Friday, you see miraculous results - listening to your intuition and following it is scary, but it pays off in numerous ways.

It’s important to say thank you- not just to others out of courtesy, although that’s always nice, but to yourself and the universe at large for all the loveliness, large and small, that you encounter every day. Use the first part of the week to be consciously grateful for things like a particularly speedy commute, the joke your grandmother tells you and the fact that your dry cleaner found your watch in your pants pocket. The last part of the week is a good time to get domestic. Seeking balance is your task over the weekend.

A great scientist once wrote, ‘Nothing is too wonderful to be true.’ Adopt that as your motto. If you can’t see the truth of it on Monday, you will by Wednesday at the latest. True, that realization may be one you have to fight for, but once you commit yourself to it, you’ll see that it’s right on. Thursday and Friday are all about consolidating your gains, from the smallest details to the biggest overview of the big picture. Use the weekend for socializing. While you’re a stalwart soul who thrives in solitude, you also need to bask in the love of your family.

Make an effort to see the issue from the other person’s point of view on Monday. Sure, you may not understand the emotions he or she is having, but it’s important that you acknowledge the validity of them. Tuesday and Wednesday are all about finding creative solutions, hopefully before a situation becomes a problem. Be kind and do a few good deeds from behind the scenes on Thursday and Friday. Anything community-oriented (recycling, charity drives, composting) is a good idea. Over the weekend, strike a balance between disseminating information and sharing silence.

Be creative about what you consider to be positive events during the first half of the week. Sure, winning the lottery might be nice, but getting a seat on the bus, a great cup of tea and a long conversation with an old friend actually have a lot more impact on your day-to-day life. In other words, being grateful for items that might be considered trivial actually increases your capacity for happiness. The more you practice this, the more you’ll see its joyous ripple effects, especially during the last half of the week and over the weekend.

A tactic that will make your life easier is to take nothing personally, especially during the first half of this week. One day everyone may be singing your praises, while another the world at large is indifferent, but none of that has any real bearing on who you are as a person. The second half of the week is about looking at the details in your relationships. Overall, things are working very well, but there might be a small matter here and there that requires fine-tuning. Socialize over the weekend. You love to have fun, especially with family.

One of the most common (and consistently false) assumptions people make is that everyone else has it together. The first half of the week, make a conscious effort to break out of that mindset. Seeing yourself and your fellow human beings with compassion helps with that task. Thursday and Friday are good times to make an art form out of commonly tossed-off things: How well can you craft that memo? Could you possibly have perfected the art of efficient recycling? The weekend is leisurely and filled with friends - how lovely!

What’s more frightening than a dream that doesn’t come true? One that does. During the first half of the week, you start to see some very big payoffs from all your recent efforts, and that can feel overwhelming. Take a deep breath and slow down. If necessary, use Thursday and Friday to attend only to small, daily tasks and put the bigger issues on the back burner. Use the weekend to talk to people who have gone on this same path before you. They’ll have great advice on how to handle your much-deserved ‘overnight’ success.

It’s time to take action on your own behalf on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. That means no more procrastinating — read a book or play with the dog instead of zoning out in front of the TV, and eat well instead of eating to feel full. Taking proper care of yourself can be a brave, if not revolutionary, act. The last two days of the week are a good time to see how you can juggle your schedule so you have more time for nourishment on all levels: mental, spiritual, emotional and physical. Get used to seeking balance, finding it, losing it and then finding it again over the weekend.

You’re in a ruminative mood at week’s start, thinking about the relationships you have in your life. On Wednesday, if you find yourself thinking about friendships, loves and family members who have come and gone, give them (and yourself) a break by reserving judgment and realizing that there are always multiple versions of the truth. Being so adult about matters of the heart makes you feel more like yourself on Thursday and Friday, and that is something to be celebrated. Fortunately, the weekend offers plenty of opportunities to do just that.

On Monday, something you’ve been denying about yourself comes to you in the form of fate. Make an attempt to get the cosmic joke on Tuesday, and by Wednesday you’ll see that this is a grand opportunity, just wearing a slightly bizarre costume. Thursday and Friday are excellent times to take solid action. They don’t have to be big actions, but they do have to fall under the category of useful and constructive. Use the weekend to enjoy all the relationships in your life, from the long and deep to the light and superficial.

It’s all you need for a great read.

Does my heart need an M.O.T.? The Family Medical Centre, Albir, welcome to their team of specialists Dr. Stijn Brinckman,Consultant Cardiologist. Having qualified in Holland, Dr. Brinckman brings many years of experience to his new practice in Spain. As well as his native Dutch, he is also fluent in English, German and Spanish. So, who would benefit from an M.O.T. ? Dr.Brinckman explains. Cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer worldwide. Over 30% off all deaths are due to cardiovascular disease (heart and vessels). This number is growing every year. Fortunately most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by addressing risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and obesity, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, diabetes and raised lipids. A check-up at the Family Medical Centre can highlight those at risk of heart disease and advise you on lowering this risk with lifestyle changes, medication or other interventions. What are the risk factors for cardiovascular disease? Risk factors for cardiovascular disease can be divided into different groups. On one side we have the risk factors that cannot be modified. Age and gender for example. Older people and men have a higher chance of developing heart disease than young people and women. A family history of heart disease (hereditary cause) also increases risk. On the other side are the modifiable (behavioural) risk factors. The most important behavioural risk factors of heart disease and stroke are unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and harmful use of alcohol. Behavioural risk factors are responsible for about 80% of coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease.

28

The effects of unhealthy diet and physical inactivity may show up in individuals as raised blood pressure, raised blood glucose, raised blood lipids, and overweight and obesity. These “intermediate risks factors” can be measured and indicate an increased risk of developing a heart attack, stroke, heart failure and other complications. What are symptoms of heart disease? Different types of cardiovascular disease can produce symptoms which can alarm us. Chest pain (or arm / jaw) during exercise can well be a sign of coronary artery disease and should always be investigated by a cardiologist. Unexplainable shortness of breath might be a sign of heart failure or coronary artery disease. Other symptoms include fatigue, palpitations, drop attacks and dizziness. So who needs a check-up? Keeping in mind the aforementioned risk factors and the known symptoms of heart disease we can strongly advise these groups of people to have a M.O.T. • Anyone with unexplainable shortness of breath or chest pain on exertion • Anyone above 50 years of age with a family member suffering heart disease or stroke • Anyone with high blood pressure • Anyone with diabetes • Anyone with tobacco use and high cholesterol • Anyone worried about having heart disease and wants assurance • Just anyone wanting to know their risk profile To make an appointment with Dr Brinckman please call the Family Medical Centre on 966 865 072.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho not expecting 2004 repeat

Jose Mourinho insists that nobody should expect a repeat of 2004, when he swept to the Premier League title in his debut campaign with Chelsea.

T

he Portuguese tactician saw his side go down to their first defeat of the season at Everton at the weekend, which means it is their worst start in the Roman Abramovich era, even though they are just two points adrift of leaders Arsenal. Mourinho has warned that things are different for him and Chelsea nearly 10 years on from when he arrived at the club from Porto. "No, it is not 2004 all over again," he is quoted by the Daily Mirror. "Then we lost against Manchester City in October - our only defeat. But that is not the point. We are not unbeatable. This is a different team. "Saturday was the story of a team with 21 shots that couldn't score a goal. That is the beauty of football." "I came here to work - I don't say

peacefully because I am the first one that does not like to work peacefully - but to work with time, to develop the players and play the best they and we can. "We have to be effective, be adult and not naive. That is what we have to work on. We have to transform the beautiful football we played into goals. "We are not a club who will accept in a cool way that things will come. We're going to chase it. "The beginning of the season was hard. Away against Manchester United, away in the Super Cup against Bayern, and away against Everton. "But Saturday was the story of a team with 21 shots that couldn't score a goal. That is the beauty of football."

England’s World Cup qualification campaign enters the final stage as they tied with Ukraine in a battle for control of Group H. Roy Hodgson's men are currently in pole position to progress automatically to next summer's tournament in Brazil but it has been hard work from the start and there is still everything to play for with two games to go their future is now in their own hands The Three Lions are one point ahead with Ukraine and Montenegro a point further back. Tricky home games against Montenegro 11/10/13 and Poland 15/10/13 lie ahead for England next month

England manager Roy Hodgson believes Steven Gerrard can play beyond 2014 World Cup thanks to his new role Hodgson also dismissed the notion that Gerrard will quit international football after next year’s World Cup finals in Brazil — should England qualify — even though the 33-year-old himself has suggested it. Hodgson revealed that he had considered using Gerrard, who will lead Liverpool, with three wins from three matches, in their Premier League encounter away to Swansea City earlier this week, in his new deeper-lying role during his brief time as Liverpool manager in 2010-11. 30

“I have always to some extent questioned Steve as an out-and-out attacking midfield player who plays like Roberto Baggio or Gianfranco Zola,” Hodgson said. “I’ve always questioned that a little as Steve has such energy, he really is a box-to-box player and if you take him away from the build-up from the back then sometimes you are not getting the best out of him. I thought that when I was with Liverpool – I’d made that decision already then.” Gerrard, who has two more years left on his

buzz@vistacostablanca.com

Liverpool contract, has already revealed he is considering prolonging his club career beyond his 35th birthday but has stated that he sees the next World Cup as a natural end of his time as an England international which has already earned him 105 caps. However, Hodgson said he was not convinced Gerrard, his captain, will quit, especially as he has prospered in his new role which saw him as England’s most effective midfielder in the midweek World Cup qualifying draw against Ukraine. His form for Liverpool has been equally impressive as he has been asked to play deeper and play the senior role behind the team’s tyros such

as Philipe Coutinho. This season Gerrard has lined up in front of the central defence, alongside the fit-again Lucas, with a pass completion rate of 87 per cent, his best ever, and winning 73 per cent of tackles in the final third, with nine key interceptions. “I always think with players it’s easy to talk about retiring in a year’s time,” Hodgson said. “I’ve fallen into that trap myself on several occasions. “But when the time actually rolls around you realise that you don’t actually want it. So let’s wait and see with Steve. I know he gives these interviews and I know people write things but I just bat those off really.”

Real Madrid star 'proud' of goal scoring debut

W

orld record signing Gareth Bale said he was "proud" of scoring on his Real Madrid debut as the Spanish giants drew 2-2 at La Liga rivals Villarreal. The Welshman, 24, netted a 38th-minute tap-in before being replaced by Angel Di Maria after 62 minutes. "Proud to score on my debut and pleased to get 60 minutes, just disappointed not to get the result," the ex-Tottenham forward said. It was Bale's first start of the season following a recent foot injury. Gareth Bale tackled by Cristiano Ronaldo during Real Madrid training The former Southampton trainee, whocompleted his ÂŁ85m move to the Bernabeuon 1 September, started on the right of a three-pronged attack-

ing midfield, alongside Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo andrecent ÂŁ23m signing Isco. After Cani had given hosts Villarreal a deserved lead, Bale put the away side level when he slid in to convert Daniel Carvajal's right-wing cross from inside the six-yard box. He almost scored another at the start of the second half when his fierce long-range shot flew over the Villarreal crossbar, before he was replaced by Argentina winger Di Maria shortly after. Ronaldo then put Real ahead, but Giovani Dos Santos, a former teammate of Bale's at Tottenham, denied him a winning start with a 70th-minute equaliser. Afterwards, Real boss Carlo Ancelotti said he was pleased with Bale's contribution. "I think he (Bale) is happy to score his first goal for Real Madrid. He played in a difficult match and he played well, showing his good attitude," said the Italian. Bale added he was now "looking forward" to making his Champions League debut for the nine-time European champions. He has been named in Ancelotti's 20-man squad for Tuesday's Group B trip to Turkish champions Galatasaray.
