end of summer street party

T

By Irena Bodnarec he sun was shining, the stage was set and the party began! The End of Summer street party which took place last Friday on a section of Calle Gerona was a great success. Crowds had already gathered well before 2 o´clock eagerly awaiting the giant paella. An orderly queue had formed to buy beer outside Lucky´s and collect the voucher to exchange for a plateful – there were even some locals who bought their own tupperwear boxes for a take away! The entertainment started earlier than planned and RockerBilly got the party started at 2pm – which the crowds loved. Many started dancing in the street and there was a carnival like atmosphere throughout the entire afternoon. The road had been closed off to traffic whilst table and chairs had been placed on the street to allow people to sit, relax and enjoy the entertainment. The top half of Calle Gerona is already closed off to cars enabling the local restaurants to serve outside – it certainly went down very well and maybe something that the council may consider for next years busy Summer season.

It was well past 2pm before the last act finished and even later before everyone dispersed yet by the start of business on Saturday morning the street was open and ready for business again. The next big event to take place in the area is the annual British Fancy Dress Day – which will be on Thursday 14th November.

Benidorm 2013 This Weekend B

enidorm is known as the town where a Fiesta of some sort is always taking place! The fiestas have always acquired a special significance and because of so many celebrations taking place throughout the year, it makes it such an attractive place to visit. The Moors and Christians have become one of the most widespread celebrated fiestas in the provinces of Alicante and Valencia, however the ones in Alcoy and Villajoiosa stand out for their spectacular nature and are recognised as being of National Touristic interest. Moors and Christians is probably one of the brighter festivals celebrated in Spain, as the costumes, music and fireworks are amongst some of the most spectacular. St. George is really to whom the parade is dedicated, but the Festival is a very old tradition that dates back to the 16th century and commemorates the confrontation that took place in the 13th Century over the rule of Spain. The events are held in honour of the city´s patron saint who played a decisive role in the battle. Saturday 5th October. Parade Program. 10.00 Diana, early morning parade with the following music bands: Asociación Nazaries, Tuareg

y Musulmanes Tagarinos, Astures, Cavallers de la Baronia y Cruzados, along Calle Paseo Colon, Paseo de la Carretera, Martínez Alejos, Gambo, Plaza de la Hispanidad opposite the Castle. 20:00 Spectacular Moors and Christians Parade through the streets of the town along Plaza Neptuno, Venus, Ruzafa, Martínez Alejos, Gambo, Plaza Hispanidad ending on Avenida Bilbao.

Help For Heroes Variety Night at Benidorm Palace

By Irena Bodnarec ast Sunday night Benidorm Palace opened its doors for a very special event – a variety show to fundraise for that amazing charity, Help for Heroes. It was a total sell out which was unsurprising as the line up was tremendous with the evening being compered by the outrageous Stevie Spit. As well as some home grown local talent such as Sister Act the giant stage was host to Benidorm´s favourite funny woman Crissy Rock – and she didn´t fail amuse with her outrageous gags and stories. Also fresh off the plane was Chico – yes you all remember “Chico Time” from X-Factor, who got all the ladies in the audience hot under collar when he jumped onto the tables and started dancing to their screams and applause! Stand up British comic Mick Miller, with his trade mark bald head and long haired sides got everyone laughing again – even the young who had probably never heard of him before. Ray Quinn, another X-Factor contestant and winner of Dancing on Ice was an utter delight to listen to, with his classic Rat Pack numbers – a true professional despite his relative youth.

L

Singer songwriter Angie Brown closed the show with her powerful voice belting out some classics – she has performed backing vocals to music greats such as The Rolling Stones, Beverley Knight and Grace Jones and she was here on the stage in Benidorm Palace! Everyone in the audience had an absolutely terrific if rather late night, not leaving until around 1.30am but all agreeing what a marvellous night it was and an added bonus that it was for such a worthy cause.

“Deb n her” get married By Irena Bodnarec enidorm´s top female singing duo, DebnHer tied the knot last Saturday in front of over 200 friends, family and fans. The pair have a very large and loyal fan base here in Benidorm and issued an open invitation to them all via their Facebook page – a very generous gesture and sign of their continued appreciation. The 4pm ceremony took place at a private villa, officiated by a local minister under a beautifully decorated pergoda situated in the middle of the garden – a truly romantic setting. Guests started arriving 2 hours beforehand in order to get seated – it was a mammoth job. The happy couple, Debbie and Emma wrote their own vows to each other and it hardly left a dry

eye as they read them out to one another. Many fellow Benidorm entertainers were present to witness this special occasion and everyone had gone to great lengths to get dressed up - with pink featuring strongly in many of the outfits. The bridal party all featured cerise in their outfits – the couples favourite colour. After the short ceremony the couple circulated with their guests, who all wanted to offer their congratulations. The wedding party later departed to the Tropical bar in Benidorm for a wedding reception where many more guests arrived to join in the partying and celebrating. The pair hope to take a honeymoon some time next year as they are too busy workwise at the moment.

entertainment The man behind Albi Senior. Issue 03 / 03 - 09 October

By Irena Bodnarec Albi Senior is one of the most talked about comedians on the Benidorm circuit - you certainly can´t miss him in his distinctive Union Jack attire. I met up with the man himself for a coffee and my first question was "is there an Albi Junior then"? He laughed as he explained how his name came about - as he finished his show his parting catchphrase was "I´ll be seeing ya" ... it took me some time for the penny to drop and Albi had to say it a few times in his broad accent ! His real name is Gary although hardly anyone calls him that and even if they did I´m not sure whether he would realise as he is so use to Albi. Albi arrived in Benidorm in 2002 moving from the UK entertainment capital Blackpool, although as you can tell from the accent he is originally from Darlington, County Durham in the North East. He has toured the UK circuit and was voted comedian of the year in 1994 - every few minutes he

10

It’s all you need for a great read.

would come out with a joke such as "I walked into a Chinese restaurant and saw a cockroach sucking on a rennie" and have me creasing up... hardly surprising than that we sat there for over 2 hours! As well as in the UK he has entertained the forces in Germany and been to Dubai twice - but surprisingly, comedy came fairly late in life to Albi as he never started until 1990. However, he has always had jobs which involved direct interaction with people and included being a taxi driver and running a bar - you can just picture that can´t you. One of his heros is Roy Chubby Brown who is also a good friend and likewise hailing from the North East - must be something in the water. I asked where he gets all his gags and jokes from and he told me that he just listens out but his son also helps him out and emails anything apt which he hears. During his shows he always interacts with the audience so if you are a little shy do not sit near the front! When I went to watch him at the Zodiac he certainly packed the place out and had the audience gasping for air from prolonged laughter at some of the non PC gags he came out with - as he himself said, you couldn´t get away with that back home could you... but it´s all very lighthearted. His characteristic outfit is specially made for

him by a company in the UK called "Stagewear Unlimited" - a specialist company which tailor makes costumes for TV, films and the stage. He has a number of identical outfits and he keeps one at each venue to compliment his title "British bulldog of Comedy" - I wondered whether he actually had a real one. He does have a beautiful dog called Duke, but it is not a bulldog, which he loves taking out on long walks during the day. Albi works 7 nights a week, performing two 1 hour shows per night - his first at 10pm in the Zodiac then at 11.30pm in Rockerfellas. However, he is off to the UK for a month on 22nd November doing a tour of some UK clubs before coming back on 23rd December to do the busy Xmas and New Year period. His UK gigs will be posted up on his facebook page if you fancy treating yourself to some laughter. He was so unlike what I expected - I know it´s a character but he is such a courteous gentleman in real life and certainly who I would want to be stuck in a lift with to pass the time.

Albi can see at: ZODIAC > 10pm Every Night ROCKERFELLAS > 11.30pm Every Night

Pizzeria toscana Calle Gerona, 3 Benidorm. Reservations: 966 80 87 07

O

ne of Benidorm's oldest and most popular Italian restaurants. I have been eating here for many years now and remember going with my cousins as a special treat after work. Their pasta is delicious and one of my favourite dishes is the meat Tortellini with ham and mushrooms, covered in a creamy sauce and sprinkled with fresh grated parmesan. The salads are also an excellent choice, but you will probably be best sharing as they are huge!, only the best, and freshest ingredients are used to add to these beautifully presented platters. A fine selection of meat and fish is also available, freshly cut and cooked on the coals ("brasa" in Spanish) for those who love that charcoal grilled taste. The peppercorn sauce

14

that I order with my fillet is positively scrumptious. However what does set this restaurant aside from most, is their authentic "wood burning" pizza oven, which turns even the simplest of Margaritas, into one of the tastiest pizzas I've had to date! Toscana is a bright and comfortable restaurant boasting a wide selection of the finest beers and wines. Big groups are always welcome, just call ahead if you want to reserve for any special occasion, they will even be happy to make a cake for you!. With the same owners for over 18 years and having some of the best reviews around town, Toscana should be next on your list when deciding where to go for your next meal out. Place the pieces on a baking tray and into the oven for 30 minutes. Put the pan back on the heat. Add the sliced chorizo and pancetta or bacon and fry until browned and crispy. Then add the onion and garlic and cook until soft. Meanwhile infuse half the hot chicken stock with the saffron. Add the smoked paprika, rice and infused stock and leave to cook on a me-

dium heat, stirring from time to time. After 20 minutes the rice should be nearly cooked. At this point, pour in the rest of the stock along with the peas, prawns, and the mussels and squid if you are using them. Place a lid on the pan and cook for 10 minutes more. Finally, add the cooked chicken and serve sprinkled with chopped parsley and a wedge of lemon. www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/seafood-recipes/paella

What’s Hot and What’s Not tells us. were friendly the atmosphere was cosy it was a little warm but still nice we would eat there again always best to book as they get busy.

“Fantastic food great value”

Two Palms Restaurant Calle La Palma 30, 03503 Benidorm, Spain

“Dissappointed”

Reviewed September 28, 2013 We read reviews so we decided to book this restaurant as we go to benidorm every year in group of friends. The staff were very friendly & helpful especially as i have ceoliacs so on a gluten free diet. When we arrived they were very welcoming, we put our orders in for food & drink., I had a separate menu for gluten free. My friend order a tia maria & coke well the was something in her drink she didnt realise till she drank a bit (we still dont know what it was) she felt sick we told the waiter who asked if she wanted another she was put off and declined, they then came back and said that they would not be serving that tia maria again ???? no explanation. The food was tasteless very dissappointed have to say some of the group enjoyed their meals, a few of us left full plates not once where we asked what was wrong with food. Couple of items i ordered they didnt have so again dissappointed. When the bill came wasnt itemised so we didnt know what was charged for etc i.e. drinks. as food was a set price for 3 course. Some folk may think this is good value can totally understand this but for 1 euro more you will get excellant food & service in the vagabond resturant, amigos & paniells, also presentation wasnt good whole massive carrots in dish with lumpy mash potatos & mushy cauliflour, greasy plate with gammon steak which full of fat. Also chicken rubbery & no taste. Sorry for a negative review but hope this will be a one of but dont think we will be back.

“Good food”

Reviewed September 24, 2013 Had a meal at two palms on monday 24th sept . The food was lovely and hot and well presented compliments to the chef the staff

Reviewed September 23, 2013 NEW via mobile We have been going to Two Palms for the past two years every time visit Benidorm. The food is delicious and great value for money. The staff are friendly and deliver excellent service. The restaurant is small but this adds to the experience afterall you are in the old town. Well done john and staff.

“Great food venue dated”

Reviewed September 16, 2013 via mobile Visited the 2 Palms twice to experience there early bird set menu and Sunday set menu, wow! The price is excellent for what you get a 3 or 4 course selection. Service is a little slow, but still very good. Food is homemade and excellent. I just wish they would update the old interior the dark green walls make you feel like your in a cave! White walls would open the space up and make it more inviting. This place is a hidden gem, just remember to book in advance. Well done guys great arrive and food. We will be back! “Good food and drink, great entertainment!”

Reviewed September 28, 2013 NEW Went back to Benidorm for 5 night stay 5th year on the run with group of 8 friends who wouldn’t eat anywhere else. Colin, Mark & Glynis are lovely friendly people working very hard with great results, lovely tasty food any time of the day and night, great entertainment, good laugh. Would recommend everyone to try just once.

“Great value for money”

Reviewed September 13, 2013 Lovely food and very friendly. Good value and plenty of choice on the menu. It was handy when you walk up from the beach.

“Excellent food and warm welcome”

It’s all you need for a great read.

Reviewed August 18, 2013 Went to Benidorm July 2012 and wanted to add our recommendations to visit this small, cosy restaurant/ bar. The food has a real home baked British taste and there is a good varied menu with all the traditional British favourites. The owners made us very welcome, and we returned many times during the holiday. Well done boys and we’ll be... More Dea Restaurante Calle Joaquin Rodrigo 3, El Albir.

“Great food”

Reviewed July 21, 2013 overall a very enjoyable evening with great food and drinks, service was slow but worth the wait and the wine choice was very good. The menu will suit all of the family and starters are really great. We did not have a desert as the starters and mains where so good.

“Great Menu Del Dia”

Reviewed July 19, 2013 I agree with the last reviewer and would add that this is a friendly Spanish-run restaurant, which appears to be something of a rarity in Albir, that has a great ‘Menu del Dia’. You can have this in the evening unlike some other places. The food is great for what you pay and if you want to spend more, the . ‘A la Carte’ looks interesting too.

“Better than most in Albir”

Reviewed July 14, 2013 If you are looking for chips with everything, then this place is not for you. However, if you want good food, friendly service, and value for money, then Dea is hard to beat. We were only in Albir for six days, and we ate here on three of them. We trailed around Albir, looking for something vaguely authentic, and were delighted to find this place. The menu del dia, starting at 12.90, was excellent value, and included a very acceptable bottle of house wine between the two of us. Lovely ambience, delightful proprietors and excellent food. We will head here first next time in Albir.

T

his week I took a peek at Bobbi Brown Holiday 2013 Makeup Collection & Gift Sets and I want to share with you some of the photos. I don’t know exactly when the launch date is but I’m guessing pretty soon since the Bobbi Brown Twilight Pink Lip & Eye Palette (info & photos) can be pre-ordered now on their website. As you can see they are beautifully presented and the make up is fabulously soft and smooth and gives your face an immaculate silky finish. The lipsticks come in various shades, two of my favourites are below, and trust me your lips will thank you for nourishing them with this light, yet resistant lip colour.

Availability International Launch Date – late September/ early October 2013 at Bobbi Brown counters, try El Corte Ingles in Alicante and online www.bobbibrown.com

The great idea of this event spread all over the Costa Blanca with thousands of people participating to raise money simply by offering cakes and coffee, MacMillans had hoped to reach a target of raising 15 million pounds the total reached last year! So a big thank you to Rachel and team who done a fantastic job and also thanks to all of the people who came along and made donations. Whilst I was there I could not help noticing a group tucking into some fantastic looking Fish n Chips so I couldn’t help but to take a photo and show it off to you. Fresh fish every Friday from 12 noon battered and fried by Rachel its on my list for a visit real soon.

The commitment of L’Alfas for language tourism can open new markets > A municipality in which the 55% of registered voters are foreigners, with the most important Norwegian colony of Spain "would do well to seek further synergies with other countries, to cover needs that we have identified but are there." It is the opinion of the expert, María Jesús Such, dean of the University of Alcala de Henares, who participated this weekend at a conference organized by the Municipality of L'Alfas del Pi, in frax Foundation, coinciding with the celebration World Tourism Day. For water, this year's theme, Such has wanted to make a wink, since it is not their specialty, but fair to recognize good management so far and across the Marina Baixa is made of water, among other reasons for the critical role played by farmers. At a general level and roughly tourism remains an essential activity, economic engine. Spain, world tourism power, gains in competitiveness but also the employees working in worse conditions. With these raw the challenge for everyone is the same "work with limited resources, we are given by the economic situation, and think long term." María Jesús Such tourism professor at the University of Alcala de Henares, specializing in economics, talks about the need to invest in the future through training, innovation, research ... "attracting talent" for the renewal of the destinations requires advance in quality. And something that is doing well Alfaz "seasonal adjustment" with sound complementary proposals as "Winter Sun", winters in the sun, led to a very specific population profile, seeking warmer destinations during the winter months especially in cold Eastern countries between May and October, but besides the climate benefits requires a whole range of cultural, sporting, leisure ... a tourist product healthy, large and entrenched in L'Alfas del Pi which has a network of accommodations and specialized hostelry. At the same time it is important to maintain and restore urban models more environmentally friendly, which also advocated by the current local government interested in restoring green spaces inside and outside the urban core, something increasingly demanded by tourists. This first lecture was very interesting, so praised the mayor of L'Alfas del Pi, Vicente Arques, who thanked Jesus Mary availability and reflections aloud especially when their experience is extensive. There will be more conferences and symposium lectures because you need to talk, listen, engage all sectors and together find these synergies to the speaker alluded "to help us stimulate new tourist trade relations."

Your weekly

Horoscope ARIES

You should be able to explore your creative side early this week without raising any nearby eyebrows - even if you’re on the clock, you can at least bust out with a few solid ideas in between the bouts of paper-pushing. Art and music should be especially appealing. Soon, though, the details of life start to mount and you need to focus on them to the exclusion of all else. It may be that by the end of the day on Thursday, you’re seeing numbers or names scroll by when your eyes are closed! The weekend is great for dating or just quietly hanging out with family.

TAURUS

Your knowledge and talents are much needed as the week begins, but others may get in the way. It’s hard to jump in without appearing arrogant, so you may just have to take a hit for the team and let others think what they may. Once the mini-crisis is past, your good energy really starts to flow, and you should find that Wednesday and Thursday are fun - no matter what you’ve got on your schedule. Wrap up any important work or family business quickly, as you have personal projects that demand all your attention over the weekend.

GEMINI

Everyone’s got an opinion on Monday and Tuesday, and even the shiest among your friends and coworkers is in the mood to share. That could mean that arguments flare up, but you should be able to help people synthesize their ideas pretty quickly. Listen to the advice of your elders midweek, even if it seems out of touch or not in line with your understanding of the situation. You need a new point of view anyway! Your brainy energy keeps you alert and engaged through the weekend, and you ought to write down any ideas that pop up then.

CANCER

You’ve got a lot to look forward to this week, though much of it is packed into the first few days. Early on, you see massive improvement in something measurable - maybe a health indicator, maybe a work project - and things might start to look really rosy for the future. Details matter midweek, and if you’re not completely buried under paperwork or lost in spreadsheet-land, you should actually have a pretty good time playing with them. Things do start to get difficult on Friday, and a delicate situation may get more so over the weekend.

LEO

You’ve got exactly the right kind of energy to take care of business on Monday and Tuesday — you’re ready for anything! Whether you’re dealing with a problem client or trying to get a child to behave at the dentist, your attitude makes it happen. You may need to pull back a bit midweek, as exerting that much energy can wear you out. It’s a good time to just stick to your schedule and avoid any impulses that may lead you astray. Your social energy starts to peak early Friday, and this is a great weekend for holiday parties or just small get-togethers with friends.

VIRGO

You may need to crawl into your shell on Monday or Tuesday, as too many people are making too many demands on your time and energy. It’s a good time for you to turn off the phone, but you may still have too much to do! Fortunately, your great energy midweek should help you make up for lost time, and you may end up even more organized than before (if that’s possible)! A casual conversation this weekend turns into something much deeper and more meaningful than you would have expected, so draw it out and see where it goes.

LIBRA

You need to spend plenty of time socializing this week, and for the most part it should feel just right. Monday and Tuesday are great for group projects at work or outings with the family - anything in which you can mix it up with people. You may be rather tired midweek, and might even feel overwhelmed if one person too many comes by. Try to balance socializing with alone time and things should work out well. Your energy comes back to you in a big way on Friday, and you ought to be able to get that big home project done, especially if you need to make decisions first.

SCORPIO

Your ego may get up to its old tricks on Monday or Tuesday, but it should mostly be harmless and even fun. If you can make fun of yourself while you’re at it, then things should be just about right. Your friends may need you midweek, but there shouldn’t be any major crises. It’s just time to reconnect, or maybe to intervene in someone’s weird decisions. Your mate or someone else close to you is trying their best to communicate with you this weekend, but their subtlety is getting the better of them.

SAGITTARIUS

Good fortune is smiling on you this week, especially Monday and Tuesday. That doesn’t mean it’s time to cash out your IRA and buy lottery tickets, but you may find that it’s a good time to take little risks emotionally or on the job. You can’t ride the wave forever, though, and should find that the middle of the week offers you plenty of busywork to pass the time while waiting for your mojo to come back. As long as you’re surrounded by friends and acquaintances, this weekend should be just about perfect.

CAPRICORN

People are rather strange early in the week, and you may need to be on your guard to avoid any unnecessary confusion. It’s one of those times when people are trying too hard to impress, as if they’re all on big dates or job interviews. You need to get more information on Wednesday and Thursday, and your ability to pull it out of people or the ‘net is striking. It shouldn’t take long for you to figure out exactly what’s going on. Friday is a bit counterintuitive for starting big projects, but it’s still just right for you.

AQUARIOUS

Monday and Tuesday see you at your most rigid and unyielding, but that may be for the best. Others are trying to exert their influence over issues they know nothing about, and you should step in to show them how wrong they are. It’s not fun, but someone has to do it! Some resentment might build up through the middle of the week, but as long as you’re careful not to gloat or say ‘I told you so,’ you should be able to weather it with ease. The weekend brings a gust of great energy that inspires you to head out and meet new people, especially those you would never meet under normal circumstances.

PISCIS

Your interactions with family and coworkers may be mildly strained this week, but with a little attention paid to the right folks, it should all be fine. Monday and Tuesday see you inspired about something new and wonderful, but others don’t want to hear about it — yet. Try to keep it to yourself until they open up. Midweek brings an opportunity to guide a child or coworker, but you need to make sure that you couch it in positive language, or they are sure to ignore it. Things start to get a lot better over the weekend.

It’s all you need for a great read.

Men and

health

CROSSWORD ANSWER

1/3 of men are clinically obese. 7/8 of men have at least one risk factor for heart disease or strokes. Twice as many men than women drink more than the recommended safe limits for alcohol. 25% of men have high blood pressure. If a man has a problem of a personal nature they are even more reluctant to discuss it with a Doctor. One study revealed that in such cases: 42 % have delayed seeing their Doctor. 47% are excruciatingly embarrassed when they do attend. 12% never seek medical attention for the problem. So ladies, if you have ever been accused of nagging your other half to seek medical attention, take no heed and keep nagging, you may well be saving his life. It may also be a good idea to leave this article on your coffee table!

SUDOKU ANSWER

CROSSWORD ANSWER SUDOKU ANSWER

THIS WEEKS

It is a fact. Men avoid Doctors. Many will admit that they will only visit a Doctor if pressurized by the other half, in fact in one American study, 80% of men agreed that without a little push from their partner they would not see a Doctor. It is this reluctance that means that men are much more likely to end up in hospital with problems such as pneumonia, heart failure and complications from diabetes. Cancers in men are often diagnosed at a point where treatment is less effective or the disease is terminal. Suicide is also more common in men as they are much less likely to consult a Doctor when they are feeling depressed. Avoiding the Doctor may well be a learned behaviour that men inherit from their own Fathers as well as the male notion that complaining about pain or illness is somehow a sign of weakness. Women on average live 5.1 years longer than men. The following statistics go someway to explaining this 45% of men are overweight.

Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez can cause 'havoc' this season

Brendan Rodgers says Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez are possibly the best strike partnership in the Premier League and, although he's biased, he's not far wrong! Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie were excellent last season for Manchester United, too. We should put it to a poll! Rodgers inherited Suarez when he moved to Liverpool and if you inherit one of the best players in the world you're blessed. Rodgers targeted Sturridge for a while to add to Suarez and he's had an instant impact since he joined from Chelsea. Chelsea saw his potential but he couldn't get in ahead of Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba at Stamford Bridge. People keep talking about young British players being stopped in their tracks but the cream always comes to the top and Sturridge is a very, very good player. And those two together will cause havoc this season.

It’s all you need for a great read.

Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey is the Player of the Season so far

Aaron Ramsey has been fantastic this season. He’s another talented young British player playing out of his skin at the moment - and he’s playing because he’s good enough. Arsene Wenger knew before his injury he was a wonderful talent, so did Gary Speed, who made him captain of Wales. Now he’s fit he’s been the Player of the Season so far. There’s nobody better than him at the moment. Arsenal’s midfield now, with Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey, with Mathieu Flamini holding, their cleverness and movement is going to worry teams throughout Europe and the Premier League this season.

David Moyes is under scrutiny

but let’s not forget West Brom’s brilliance at Old Trafford

Fernando Torres and Jan Vertonghen had an old-fashioned battle on Saturday

Fernando Torres has made lots of headlines for his controversial sending off and clash with Jan Vertonghen. We had Spurs keeper Brad Friedel on Goals on Sunday this week and he called it a good old fashioned battle, they shook hands afterwards and hopefully it’s finished with - although it could be costly for Chelsea and Torres if the FA take retrospective action. On a more positive note, though, Juan Mata was impressive when he came on - as he was all last season. His performances are under scrutiny but when you perform how he did last season, why has he got to prove himself? Jose Mourinho sets up from the back and in the first half - like against Man United - it was safety first then attack. Mata’s performance wasn’t a surprise but was highlighted because Mourinho says he doesn’t fit into his team when they are playing defensively. When he’s making it offensive, though, there’s nobody better.

30

David Moyes is going to come under scrutiny because he’s taken over from a legend in Sir Alex Ferguson and they’ve made their worst start to a season in 24 years. But we mustn’t take away credit from what West Brom did. Few teams go to Old Trafford and dominate the ball and carve out chances the way they did. I saw Steve Clarke at Fulham a few weeks ago, before Morgan Amalfitano had kicked a ball, and he said ‘watch out for this player’. He didn’t play that well in his first game and I wasn’t sure but against United he was the best player on pitch; his touch and finish for his goal was top, top drawer. It was a great performance from West Brom but everyone seems to be looking at the negative from Manchester United’s point of view.

Peter Broadbent has died at the age of 80.

The former England international and FA Cup winner died peacefully at 2am Tuesday 1st October 2013 at a nursing home in Himley after suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for several years. He was part of England’s 1958 World Cup squad and in total scored two goals in seven appearances for the Three Lions. Broadbent was part of the Wolverhampton Wanderers side that won the Football League title three times, in 1954, 1958 and 1959 and also the FA Cup in 1960. Leaving Wolves in 1965, he joined Shrewsbury Town and also played for Aston Villa, Stockport County and Bromsgrove Rovers before hanging up his boots. Our thoughts are with his family at friends at this sad time.

England have named three Burgess brothers in their 24-man World Cup squad.

Three of the four Burgess brothers make the cut twins George and Tom, the only uncapped players in the squad, plus older brother Sam - but former Leeds prop Luke misses out. It is the first time that three brothers have been included in an England squad and it is the selection of Tom, who is in his first season with South Sydney Rabbitohs that will raise eyebrows as he gets the nod over Crabtree. Injuries ruled out Leeds’ Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Jack Reed of the Brisbane Broncos while there were no places for the likes of St Helens’ Jon Wilkin, Warrington veteran Adrian Morley and Wakefield Wildcats’ Danny Kirmond. Head coach Steve McNamara said: “After three years of excellent preparation and the success of the England elite training programme during that period, we are ready for the Rugby League World Cup 2013. “We are fully aware that the Rugby League World Cup 2013 will be fiercely contested and that this squad will need to work extremely hard and play to a very high level to win the tournament and we believe we have selected a squad capable of doing just that.
