Altea Moors & Christians festival

VISTA Radio 96.2 Launch Party at Flash Hotel Giant Paella at Calle Gerona on Friday World Tourism Day What’s Hot and What’s Not

By Irena Bodnarec Last weekend the much anticipated Moors and Christians parade took place in Altea – the highlight of the annual fiesta calendar. The parade was done over two separate days – first the Christians on Saturday night followed by the Moors on Monday. Spectators lined the entire route and were standing shoulder to shoulder, cheering and clapping as the procession passed by. The costumes as always were simply stunning and cameras constantly flashed as each group went by. After the carnival in Rio this must definately come a close second for elaborate and eye catching outfits! It was a real family event with plenty of children also taking

part in the parade, with the younger ones on floats as well as some knights on horseback. The festival is celebrated in towns all over Spain, but particularly in this region of the Costa Blanca and celebrates the battles between the Moors (muslims) and Christians from the 8th to the 15th Century. Benidorm holds its parade on Saturday 5th October and it is certainly worth attending if you are around. The best vantage point will be on the Calle Gambo – the pedestrianised street at the top end of the Avd Mediterraneo and the start time is 8pm, but get there early if you want front line position and don´t forget your camera.

ock concert at the bull ring Benidorm last weekend was a sell out. The line up of bands from the 80’s provided the ultimate sounds of these rock legends. The music started at 2pm and went on until the early hours giving the town a night to remember. I joined up with other local business owners and friends

to experience something new to me the rock sounds of Spain. The venue filled hour by hour getting almost full by the time darkness fell. The atmosphere just got more and more vibrant as more and more people arrived and the music just took over. The event was sponsored by Amstel Beer, Coco Cola, Legendario as well as local business Tiki City and Grupo Aurrera.

Charity Fair at El Cisne

By Irena Bodnarec Last Sunday there was an International Charity Fair at El Cisne rastro to raise both funds and the profile of many charity organisations in the region. It was jointly organised by Pamela Dawson Tasker of the AECC and Steve Ashley of the Samaritans in Spain and the objective was to bring together the various charities who work on the Costa Blanca, to help residents of all nationalities in time of need. The Mayor of Benidorm, Agustin Navarro officially opened the event together with British Vice Consul Elizabeth Bell. In her speech Elizabeth acknowledged that without the help and support of such organisations many would suffer as council funding is so limited. Many of those present were British run charities such as Samaritans, MABS Cancer support, Guardian Angels, HELP and Royal British Legion to name a few of the 50 odd stalls and this epitomizes the character of the Brits – always the first to help and dig deep in times of need. The pair then walked around and took the time to speak to the volunteers at each and every stall – congratulating them on their hard work. The Mayor recognized the important work that the volunteers did and thanked them all in person – something which was gratefully appreciated. The Joanna James Jazz Quartet entertained the audience as they browsed in the afternoon sunshine at what turned out to be a very successful event.

top road drug bust

buzz@vistacostablanca.com

20 September 2013 Agents of the National Police force in Benidorm have uncovered a drug ring that proceeded in the arrest of six people of Spanish nationality two were ages 57 and 58 known as "the grandparents". The arrests were carried out in an abandoned house on top road Benidorm close to the nightclubs on a piece of flat land, as it is thought to be easier to watch out for the police and easier to distribute the drugs to the partygoers. Amongst other drug related paraphernalia, 19 wraps of heroine were confiscated, along with jewelry, 1.295€, 60 pounds sterling, televisions and tools. Following the first arrest they proceeded to raid a second abandoned house which resulted in the arrest of their 31 year old daughter, her husband

of the same age and his 48 year old mother, all part of the same family clan. In this house they found 30 wraps of heroine, along with 2 more bags of heroine weighing 23 grams and a wrap of cocaine; a silver plated "32" revolver and 949€ in banknotes. Tools and mobile phones were among some other objects retrieved from the raid. Following that, a 6th member of the group aged 52 was then arrested. This is the third time that the Judicial Police of Benidorm have carried out operations against this family in the past three years. The detainees all of Spanish nationality and residents in Benidorm excluding one all have police records for previous drug trafficking offenses and will all appear before the magistrates.

flash harry

O

ne of the most well known and much loved characters in Benidorm, Harry, known as “Flash Harry” to most came to Spain just over seven and a half years ago with his lovely wife Maureen and his 89 year old mother, who lives with the couple. Harry decided that he wanted to retire before he was 60 so flew to Benidorm. However as we all know it’s not that easy and as Harry says, “if there’s a shilling to be earned, ya gotta take it!” There began his career in chalkboard writing here on the Costa Blanca. Harry has been sign writing since he was 15! So with over 51 years of experience it’s not hard to decide who to call when you need a sign! His work can be seen in most of the bars and restaurants here in Benidorm so if you need anything doing, just ask for Flash! Harry and Maureen have been together now for 9 years and have renewed their vows twice here in Benidorm, the first being in the English Church 2010, and just recently at the end of July this year because Maureen found the “perfect white dress” and “life’s too short” she says. It was a wonderful day and I had the honor of organizing the transport for the wedding party to the Palladium where the ceremony was held. Maureen and co were the first ever wedding party to mount the famous “Benibike” and peddle their way through Benidorm singing and laughing as they went! It was a fantastic day, and a big group of family and friends were waiting for them to arrive before taking pictures and escorting the group into the Palladium where the heart felt renewal

took place. Harry gets asked to do all sorts and even performed his very own wedding ceremony in Bar Sol on Levante Beach! (The couple to this day think they were legally married! Oh dear!) But on a serious note the couple get involved in a lot of charity work, and anything to help the less fortunate they will put their hand to. Their latest charity venture being to help a 5 year old girl with cerebral palsy, by raising a whopping 1.200€ to help towards her therapy sessions. Between them they have 12 grandchildren who live in the uk so know how important family is and when they can, they pay for them to come over and visit. They have no regrets about moving from the uk although “sometimes it can be hard, I’d rather be skint and happy here” and when Harry looks out of his window at the wonderful mountain views that he has, he says “I feel so blessed that sometimes I get choked up, we are very lucky to live in such a wonderful place”. To get a free quote from Harry don’t hesitate to call 660 210 111.

OAP’s loose tobacco worth 530€ at Hotel Levante Club Apartments

David and Joan Brown from Plymouth are devastated to find their cigarettes and tobacco purchased in Benidorm had been stolen from their room whilst they went to the beach last Thursday afternoon. David told us that he had taken his wife to the beach between 12 noon and 3pm and when he came back to their room at the Levante Club apartments he found that the room had been cleaned. Well that’s alright in any case the room had been cleaned the previous day so a bonus really

8

when it should be cleaned every three days. Well a bonus to have your room extra clean is one thing but when David went into the bedroom to get some cigarettes for his wife he found that their suitcase had been emptied. “the case had been emptied all of our tobacco had gone” so how can this of happened the room was locked and the only sure sign of anyone having been into the room was the cleaners!!! After reporting the theft to the hotel management David and Joan were told that there was nothing that the hotel can do for them, really is this the case? When items are taken from your room without any sign of a burglary it must be someone who has access to a pass key, so an employee of the hotel one would assume? Or if not who? So who is responsible? David and Joan went along to the Police station in the old town Benidorm to make the report and have been told that the incident would be investigated. David and Joan have spent their holiday feeling bitter and angry, “ it’s totally spoilt our long awaited holiday and we were so happy to be in Benidorm, after losing 530€ worth of stuff you just feel like you want to go home”

Pablo Bloom. Benidorm´s one man jukebox

O

ne of the main draws to Benidorm after the sun must be the nightlife - and I include drinking in that category! It is probably the entertainment capital of Europe such is the variety and diversity which can be found here. Whatever your personal taste in music you can virtually be guaranteed to find it in one of the many bars and clubs. You can hear and watch a selection of very talented people, but one name which consistently stands out, not only to his audience but also among his peers is Pablo Bloom. As he told me when we sat down for a chat “I feel blessed that I love what I do for a living” - and that passion is certainly expressed when he performs. Pablo performs his one man show “Rock & Roll Time Machine” 5 nights per week at some of the busiest venues in town and carries his musical instruments from one to the other Rock & Roll House, Uncle Ped´s, Western Saloon and Heartbreak on a regular basis - his full itinerary can be

found at https://www.facebook.com/pablobloom?fref=ts Both of us co-ordinated in green.... even my notebook! Pablo speaks with a real American twang so I was somewhat surprised when he told me that he had never actually lived in the States! He was born in Argentina and when he was 2 years old the family moved to Israel, where they lived on a kibbutz. The vast majority of those that lived there were Americans hence where Pablo picked up his accent! He did one of his three years compulsory army service then the family moved to Spain and settled in Valencia. He speaks fluent English, Spanish and Hebrew - although there is not a lot of call for that here in Benidorm he told me. He played in various bands when he lived in Israel and so automatically decided on a career in the entertainment industry - he actually writes his own songs and can also sing them in Hebrew... isn´t he so talented! Bizarrely enough, despite his show being heavily influenced with 50´s/ Rock and Roll his knowledge of that era was limited to Elvis - which he picked up from watching Forrest Gump! Soon after arriving in Valencia he was asked to make up the 4th member of a Beatles tribute group - he was Paul McCartney and they went off on a six month tour of Majorca - and in that time they didn´t have a single night off! After that the group commuted every night for 2 years from Valencia to Benidorm to perform the 2am slot at Talk of the Town! Well Pablo didn´t as within 6 months he met Mariana, who eventually was to become his wife and moved to Benidorm. The other 3 members continued to commute but as Pablo had so much extra time on his hands he started to perform in his own right as a John Lennon tribute alongside his group commitment. Eventually he decided to go it alone and has developed his performance so that it is a one man all singing all dancing spectacular. Humour is very important which is reflected in his performances... he loves doing requests, tells jokes and is very spontaneous throughout, playing various instruments, sometimes in a most unusual fashion intrigued now aren´t you? He has expanded his music portfolio and plays many current hits in addition to renditions of the Jersey Boys, Chuck Berry and other Rock & Roll classics. In addition to his nightly shows he also plays at El Cisne every Saturday at 12 noon and also on Sunday, but his stage time varies. Laden down fans...

In his “spare time” which shall we say is pretty limited as he is father to 3 month old twins Oliver and Ella he has written a TV Show for children, which is being filmed next month. It is to inspire them about music, obviously, and it has him interacting with puppets along the lines of “The Muppet Show” if you can remember that far back. He showed me a clip on his laptop and the talent of this man is truly incredible... At an MS charity fundraiser this year He also does stand up comedy having completed a months comedy class in Argentina and is due on the Spanish comedy circuit which is sadly lacking any comedy acts. He often injects quips and witty remarks into his nightly routines to the amusement of his audience who never know what to expect - he makes every show different and interacts with them constantly. He told me that when the twins were born his fans literally besieged him with the most beautiful gifts for them and is blessed having such loyal fans. Last year he was invited to play at a wedding in Galicia to a couple who met at one of his performances here in Benidorm so he can add matchmaker to his repertoire! Having become so famous here now perhaps Derren Litten should nab him for ITV´s Benidorm series 7 before Hollywood snaps him up... I can just visualise Kenneth tinkering on the keyboard!

Treasure Hunt in La Nucia

L

a Nucia Town Hall are collaborating with the Costa Blanca Flemish society and the Association of Businesses in La Nucia by holding a treasure hunt!. The idea is you have to follow a series of clues to find a hidden article, location or place. The aim of the hunt is for people to discover La Nucia town, which is at 10km from Benidorm and really is a fun and an original incentive for anyone... you do not have to be a resident of the town. Unlike a "traditional" treasure hunt which is completed by all the participants on a particular day, this one is open for an entire month. If you are interested in taking part then simply pick up an entry form from either “Cerveceria La Plaça” - the bar located opposite the church and next to the Town Hall in La Nucia or from Marco Polo Expeditions on Avd Europa in Benidorm. The forms are being printed in several languages including English, Spanish and Dutch. Entries must be submitted by 28th October and handed in at either the Cerveceria La Plaça in a sealed envelope or sent to the Belgium Consulate in Alicante.

Tapas in the Old Town Benidorm

I

t is essentially a style of eating rather than a form of cooking. Tapas mean sociability, friends and family. The Spanish, in general, won’t drink without eating something as well. Happy hour in Spain is not a half price drink hour. It’s a time when you can have a free small tapa with every drink ordered. Not all bars participate in this modern custom but it is certainly becoming more popular. Many cuisines offer foods meant to awaken the appetite. Antipasti, hors d’oeuvres and mezes are among countless names of dishes typically eaten just before a meal. In some trendy restaurants they turn an assortment of small dishes

14

into the main meal itself. In Spain, however, eating tapas is a separate dining experience. In fact, the term tapas and its various regional equivalents have come to imply the act of going out bar hopping, or the art of eating while standing. After completing the first round of lively conversation and small plates, the group moves on to the next bar, often only footsteps away. There is no end to the variety of tapas available. Every village, town or city has their own variety of small bites of Spanish flavours. Some of these tapas are common to all districts. Even if the name is slightly different, the recipe will be the same.

It’s all you need for a great read.

buzz@vistacostablanca.com History The voyage started in 1991,when we opened our first premises, Aurrera Pintxos, in the old town of Benidorm, where we started and where we remain. We still offer Tapas and Pinchos in the most original Vasco stile. From there and thanks to our dedication we can offer the best quality and service available. The Aurrera company has grown with more premises offering different styles. At the moment Aurrera group is formed of 7 premises with great offers. Aurrera Pintxos the first of our establishments offers a huge variety of appetizing pinchos that have made us undeniably popular. Here is where you can enjoy pinchos and tapas and feel as if you were in the old town of San Sebastian, and enjoy sensible prices too. In 1995 we opened the Bodegon Aurrera, Sidreria Aurrera, Braseria, Pizzeria Avanti and in 2010 Gorbea Bar and La Taparia, all dedicated restaurants, offering extended styles and tastes, where customer satisfaction is our goal.

Although more than a objective, it is a statement of intent that reflects the understanding of the new times. In the Aurerra group every person counts, all of the people who join this great team take this principle very seriously in their daily work. This commitment to customer satisfaction has enabled us to continue growing. Our teams from chefs to administration, follow a professional working daily plan to ensure the principles and quality of impeccable service with passion and efficiency are maintained In the Aurerra Group We are constantly innovating, awaiting new trends, attentive to the new demands, looking forward to the future, without losing sight of the fundamentals, where we come from and our roots. (In all of our restaurants in the group) Aurrera, are in the traditional style are are harmonized to come together to please every taste.

Philosophy Because we know that a satisfied customer is the best credential, our day to day target is:

“You are only a leader if your customers are satisfied in every way.

What’s Hot and What’s Not tells us. “The fish is lovely”

Reviewed August 25, 2013 Have the fish if you go for a meal. I really can’t fault the food it was plentiful and very tasty. If you go at night for something you will meet Gary a lovely man and very friendly. Shame the rest of the staff let it down...

“Service?” Steak House El Rincon Avd/Severo Ochoa n04. local 12, 03503 Benidorm, Spain

“Expensive but lovely”

Reviewed September 20, 2013 NEW We treat ourselves on our last night to a steak. It was a bit expensive but absolutely worth it. There were lots of other meals on the menu and we shared Nachos to start with. Service was excellent. Atmosphere great too. Would recommend.

“Best steak !”

Reviewed September 6, 2013 Staying at the levante and decided to try this place as its just across the road. Wish I had tried it earlier ! Going home tomorrow or we would be going back. Gorgous food

“Hidden gem!”

Reviewed September 3, 2013 Lovely place ! Had pate and sauted mushrooms to start - delicious and very fast service ! Both had surf and turf main. 7oz fillet with king prawns sauted in garlic ! It was to die for! Nicest meal I’ve had in a long while !

“Most juiciest and tasty steak Ive had” Reviewed August 28, 2013 We visited this restaurant on 25 Aug 2013 for a change in scenery while staying in the all inclusive Flamingo Oasis Hotel across the road. I ordered the rib eye steak which was 17 euros and when arrived at the table was nearly the size of half a cow! Ordered to be cooked medium and was cooked to perfection -... Restaurant at the Queens Hotel

“Disgusting”

Reviewed September 19, 2013 NEW the food was terrible! made to feel very unwelcome. The staff were rude, and had no idea how to give customer service. Avoid at all costs!

Reviewed July 8, 2013 Went to this restaurant because it was recommended to us, don’t have anything to say about the food since we did not get that far. My friend and I went and sat at a table inside... it was empty, we sat for a whole 15 mins trying to catch both the bar man and waitress to come over and maybe...

It’s all you need for a great read.

Mayra Indian Cuisine Carrer de la Cadernera, 4,La Nucia.

“Take away”

Reviewed September 7, 2013 Wanted a takeaway but didn’t have a menu, not a problem, they messaged a menu to me..... Great quality food, professional attentive service. What do you need more? Top marks!!

“Great food”

Leonardo Bulevar de los Musicos, 35, El Albir

Reviewed August 28, 2013 Had a family dinner whilst on holiday, made to feel very welcome and a very good selection of food on the menu. If you like a hot madras then you have come to the right place, other Currys seemed to be on the mild side. Large portions and the chicken was really tender and high quality white meat.

“Lovely food!! Friendly staff!”

“Very good service, fantastic food:-)”

Reviewed September 15, 2013 We visited here twice during our most recent stay at our family villa in Albir. We have not been before but came across when taking a different route to the front. The owner, who is chief waiter is a pleasant man, and very friendly. On our first visit we had the €22 menu of the day with steak and wine.

“First Class”

Reviewed August 4, 2013 Visited Albir many times, but this was our first time going Bed & Breakfast, used Trip Advisor to review the restaurants before we travelled and liked the reviews for Leonardo. The reviews were spot on, so much so, we visited Leonardo three times (July 2013). The meals are very good and the Owners are very friendly.

“‘What a treat’”

Reviewed July 24, 2013 My husband and I visited this restaurant twice whilst on holiday in Albir. The food was lovely, beautifully presented and with plenty of variety. On our first visit we opted for the set menu and on the second choose from the a la carte options. Couldn’t fault it, tasty, great choices and great value for money. The owner is friendly, helpful.

Reviewed August 9, 2013 Very good food and service, recomend it! Opens at 18.00, did not say so on the door so we had to wait, but it was worth it!

“Fantastic food:-)”

August 15, 2013 Thank you very much sir. We are really glad to know that you like our food and service.. and extremly sorry for not providing opening hours. Thats sorted now. We promise to maintain our food quality and service. hope to see you soon again, we will get another chance to serve you in a better way. Thank you very much.

The Family Medical Centre Continues to Grow So, what’s new at the Family Medical Centre, Albir? Well firstly F.M.C.’s resident G.P. affectionately know as ‘Dr.An’ has been joined by 3 other G.P.’s enabling more flexibility for patients. Also, to help patients the clinic has continued to open on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. These extended opening hours have proved to be popular with those who are busy working during the day. Obstetric / Gynaecology The F.M.C. is pleased to welcome Dr.Walter van Harmelen to their team of specialists. Dr. Walter is a Dutch gynaecologist who has been practicing on the Costa Blanca since 2008. He speaks fluent English, Spanish, German and of course Dutch. He offers specialist consultations including on-site ultra sound scans. Minor surgical procedures can also be performed in the medical centre thus saving patients trips to hospital. Physiotherapy / Osteopathy F.M.C.’s renowned physiotherapist Joan McLellen is now joined by Physiotherapist / Osteopath Simon Ratcliffe. Simon is fluent in both English and Spanish and his Dutch is improving every day since working with Dutch patients! Therapists The F.M.C. also have welcomed ‘on board’ two first class therapists: Ulf Lidman is Swedish but has spent many years practicing in the U.S.A. as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. He has a specialist interest in addiction therapy treating patients suffering from alcohol, prescription drugs, recreational drugs, gambling and sex addictions.

As well as his native Swedish he speaks fluent English, Norwegian and Dutch. Grahame Milton-Jones gained his professional qualifications as a Psychotherapist in the U.K. and has been a practicing on the Costa Blanca for 10 years. Grahame treats patients with a wide range of emotional problems including anxiety and panic attacks, low self esteem and confidence problems, depression, relationship problems, bereavement, and phobias. He also treats patients for smoking cessation and weight control. When appropriate he uses hypnotherapy as part of his treatments. All therapy sessions with either Ulf or Grahame are conducted in the relaxed, friendly and confidential environment of the Family Medical Centre. Priority for Amanda and Dawn (clinic owners) has always been that the Family Medical Centre should be affordable for people. Therefore since opening in 2011 they have not increased their fees and continue to charge just 38 Euros for G.P., Nurse or Midwife consultations. This makes private health care at the Family Medical Centre within reach of most people.

Your weekly

Horoscope Monday is rather upsetting for you, though you may not be able to explain why - even to your mate or best friends. Just roll with it and wait for your good energy to return to balance. The middle half of the week is just about right, and you should be ready to take action at a moment’s notice - as soon as the mood strikes you, really! You’re not guaranteed of success, but you’ve got a good feeling. Expect to see some modifications to your reputation as the weekend moves in. Some are good, some not so much, but you can handle it all.

You must decide on Monday between your giving and your needy sides - and, either way, things aren’t going to be quite right for a while. You can compromise, but it might take some effort. Ideals are important this week, and if you can bring your work and home lives back in line with your beliefs, you should start to feel much better and might make up some key ground. Your emotional side might be a little off-balance this weekend, but it’s just because you’re making progress in one area of life.

You’re feeling pretty good, if a little uncertain, as the week rolls in, and you may find that your social standing improves quite a bit without your having to do much of anything. It’s a good time to work with large groups. Try not to let this get to your head, though, as self-righteousness is a big no-no midweek. People are looking out for signs of ego and they are sure to come down quite hard on them. Good energy starts to trickle back in on Friday, and you reconnect with your deepest ideals over the weekend.

You feel amazingly confident in your abilities as the week begins, and should make the most use of them as possible in one day. You might blow away the competition before they realize what’s happening! Things get bigger and bigger as the week progresses - so much so that you might start to get nervous on Wednesday or Thursday. Don’t worry too much, though, as you can handle all the new people and experiences coming your way. Make your play on Friday or Saturday, and make sure that you are first in line when things start to really happen.

Slow down on Monday - if you move too quickly, you’re sure to have to backtrack in the near future. If anything, you may want to just entrench yourself and let others take all the risks! Jump back into the action midweek and let yourself take charge when necessary, because your energy is just right for influencing events for the better. Work should go your way without fail. Your social life gets interesting on Friday - people seem to be communicating through pheromones and body language, and the weekend is rife with mysteries.

It’s a quiet week for you, though things do get interesting for a while. On Monday, you’d just as soon prefer to keep to yourself for the most part, and might get some solid work done with your door shut. The middle of the week brings amazing energy your way, but you should use it to dig up information or chat up key players to get a better understanding of what’s going on socially. The weekend is perfect for taking care of your own needs and building up your means of self-sufficiency as best you can.

If your intuition isn’t giving you the high sign as the week begins, you need to say ‘no’ to pretty much anything that’s new. That might disappoint kids or coworkers, but it’s definitely the right thing to do. You may be torn between different options on Tuesday through Thursday, but if you can play Hamlet long enough, you ought to be able to stall for the time you need to really dig into the issues at hand. Things come into much sharper focus on Friday and through the weekend, so you ought to know full well what to do by then.

Call on a good friend or relative for assistance on Monday - at least one person is just waiting for the call. Sometimes it’s just as sweet to ask for help as it is to offer. If you’re feeling down midweek, just persevere through the darkness. You should start to see glimmers of hope by Thursday, and remarkable success after that. Your hard work pays off this weekend, so you might feel justified in blowing off some obligation and celebrating in any fashion that feels right to you and your people.

You’re entirely focused on personal issues Monday, but you can at least see your friends and family and recognize when they’re going through their own tough times. Soon you can pull out of your reflective time and help, if needed. Romance is on your mind for much of the week, and it may be a good time to commit or recommit to someone you care about. Your sunny energy is perfect for new beginnings! You should direct your efforts over the weekend toward helping people, from immediate family members to the underprivileged in third world countries.

Shut the door on Monday and try to just get your work (or chores or studies) done without interruption. It’s not likely that you can get total privacy, but that’s still a goal worth striving for. The next few days in the week are much more social for you, and you ought to seek out groups of people who hold similar views or might challenge you in interesting ways. It’s a great way to rekindle romantic feelings, too! Communication troubles get in the way of your home life somewhat this weekend, but you ought to be able to understand what’s happening even if you can’t articulate the issues.

Something small attracts your attention - and curiosity - as you start the week, and it may be in the back part of your mind for quite a while if it doesn’t become clear right away. Try not to force your will on the world too much for much of the week, especially Tuesday through Thursday, as it’s difficult to have much of an effect and it’s just best to follow along for the time being. Your creative energy opens up on Friday, though, and you should be able to have good fun with it if you let your mind roam far and wide.

Work issues dominate the week, so expect a fair amount of time spent away from the home (at least mentally). Your good energy helps you with closing deals and signing new agreements on Monday, and you should proceed at full speed. Problems are sure to arise midweek, but if you keep pushing and communicating freely, you should be able to make acceptable progress. Leadership is important on Friday and through the weekend, and it may be up to you to provide it. Don’t hesitate - you’ve got to act like you mean it!

It’s all you need for a great read.

KEEP YOUR DOG HEALTHY AND HAPPY GROOM REGULARLY! Grooming your puppy/dog All dogs will benefit from regular grooming, whether it is a short haired breed or one with a long or fluffy coat.Reasons for grooming – Remember ‘CHAIR’ Cleanliness – keeping your dog’s coat clean by removing dirt and dead hair helps encourage new hair growth and reduces the amount of hair deposited on household furniture Health – grooming helps to stimulate new coat growth and prevents the formation of knots which may lead to skin irritation Appearance – most owners take a pride in their dogs looking smart, and regular grooming will certainly help your dog to look his best Inspection – regular grooming is also a great way to check for parasites or any suspicious lumps and bumps Relationship – grooming is part of dog’s socialisation activities. Regular grooming helps create a bond between you and your dog, and acustoms the dog to being handled. Getting started It is important to groom your dog at a height which is comfortable for both you and your dog and for many dogs it may be advisable to groom your dog on a table. There are custom made grooming tables available, which might be a good investment if you have taken on a dog that needs a lot of grooming. But any sturdy table or work bench with a non-slip surface will suffice. Remember: never leave your dog unattended on the table even for the shortest moment. Start the grooming experience at an early age as part of your puppy’s socialisation programme and routines. Keep the sessions short to start off with – just a couple of minutes, gradually increasing the time spent on the table. Always make the experience positive, rewarding with praise and treats. Any struggling should be dealt with firmly but kindly as your puppy may be frustrated, mischievous or even afraid. Build up the experience and your puppy will come to accept his grooming routine and also being handled on the table, which will help for other activities such as veterinary visits. Finish the grooming routine before he gets bored or tired, so that each session ends on a positive note. Dog coat types. It’s worth bearing in mind that factors like neutering, age, poor diet and poor health can dramatically influence your dog’s coat. Knots and matts A knot occurs where the coat is slightly tangled but it can be removed by careful brushing or combing out. Matts are formed when dead, loose undercoat hair becomes trapped by the top or guard hair, and starts to clump and

28

twist together. If this matted coat becomes wet, the matting tightens and becomes almost solid. Do not attempt to remove matts unless trained in the procedure. Otherwise, refer to a professional groomer. Care of ears, nails and eyes • Check the dog’s ears to see if they are clean. You can remove excess dirt from the inside of the ear flap with damp cotton wool. Never probe inside the ear as you may perforate the ear drum. Any odour is usually a sign there is something wrong and the dog should be taken to a vet. • If nails are excessively long remove the tip of the claw, taking care not to cut the quick or blood vessel. • If needed clean the eyes with clean, damp cotton wool using a separate piece for each eye. External Parasites A parasite is something that lives on another animal (the host) and gets its nourishment from the host. If left unchecked, the parasite causes disease or even death. The most common external parasites found on dogs are fleas and ticks. • Fleas are very small, brownish black, extremely agile creatures. Excessive scratching and self-biting can be symptoms of flea infestation. Even if no fleas are to be seen the presence of shiny black specks like coal dust (flea excreta) is a sure indication of the presence of fleas (dab the specks with a damp piece of cotton wool and if it goes pink it confirms the presence of fleas; these are the remains of a digested blood meal from the host). • Ticks are largish grey pea shaped parasites that can be 3 to 4mm in length. They attach themselves to other animals in order to have a blood meal. There is evidence that ticks are also a threat to human health as they can spread Lyme disease. There is now a wide range of proprietary powders, sprays, ‘spot-on’ treatments and anti-flea and tick collars available. A dedicated pet care professional will be happy to advise on suitable products. Other skin problems Ringworm: Ringworm is a fungal disease, affecting the skin, nails and hair. Circular lesions appear causing hair loss, which become scaly and crusty. Ringworm is contagious and is a zoonotic condition (transmissible to humans).

F1 Near Miss > Lewis Hamilton’s Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso near-miss in Singapore Both Mercedes drivers had to take avoiding action "Shocked" an oncoming Lewis Hamilton when Fernando Alonso stopped on his slow-down lap at the end of the Singapore GP to give Mark Webber a lift back to the pits. Alonso and Webber were found to have breached separate Articles of Formula 1's Sporting Regulations in the hours after Sunday's race and both were handed retrospective reprimands from the Singapore stewards - the third Webber has received this season, triggering an automatic ten-place grid penalty for the next event.

While Webber, whose car had ground to a halt on the final lap, was punished for re-entering the track without permission, Alonso was rebuked for forcing two cars to take avoiding action at Turn Seven - the Mercedes pair of, first, Nico Rosberg and then Hamilton. "Today, I was doing my in-lap and came round the corner and Fernando was there - I was really shocked," Hamilton said afterwards. "If Mark was walking across where I went, I would have run him over. Fortunately, that wasn't the case."

Super League Rugby Final´s

Winner meet next week on 5 October at Old Trafford With the Wildcats having already turned down offers on a number of first teamers including As another extraordinary Super League season draws to a close, the Rugby League merry go round begins to whirr into action again thanks in part to the newly re-named Salford Red Devils cranking it up last week by announcing no less than 12 signings for next season. Additions to the squad included several Super League based players such as, Rangi Chase, Adrian Morley, Gareth Hock, Tim Smith as well as a couple of NRL signings; Junior S’au and Steve Rapira. Dr Koukash has promised Salford fans they will be favourites for the Grand Final in 2015 - so he had better hope the team gel quickly. Hull FC revealed this week they are bringing back big Iafeta Palaaesina to Super League after 12 months away playing for Limoux in the French Elite League. The arrival of ‘Feka’ has signalled the end of Andy Lynch’s days at Hull, with a move back to his first club, Castleford, now completed. Hull also said an emotional farewell to Tom Briscoe after the game against Catalan last week, although it remains to be seen where he will be heading with a few teams thought to be in the frame. Sadly due to factors away from the pitch fans of Wakefield and Broncos will probably have little to cheer about over the close season. Their exit doors are likely to be far busier than their arrivals. 30

talismanic captain Danny Kirmond, but having cashed in on Tim Smith (Salford) and Kyle Amor (St Helens) already it remains to be seen if Wakefield can keep hold of the backbone of the team. As for Broncos, their very existence seems to be hanging in the balance. Is this season going to be the final one with a London presence in Super League? Signs look ominous with the likes of Kieron Dixon, Dan Sarginson, Tony Clubb being linked to pastures new. There also looks like being a number of new faces arriving in the South of France next year with three of the Dragon’s stand-out players leaving the club this winter. Remi Casty is off to the NRL to link up with ex-Dragons coach Trent Robinson at Sydney Roosters, while Damien Blanch is returning to Australia for family reasons. Finally, but by no means least, Steve ‘Beaver’ Menzies has finally decided to hang up his head guard at the ripe old age of 39. It is not an understatement to say that Menzies will be a loss to the whole sport of Rugby League not just for Catalan. Whilst we are still waiting for the likes of Leeds, Saints, Wigan and Huddersfield to make any significant moves in the transfer market, once the playoffs, Grand Final and World Cup are out of the way a flurry of faces, old and new, are sure to begin arriving at these clubs.

When I found about what had happened on Saturday morning I was gutted. Not just for us boxing fans, but for David Haye. And Tyson Fury. And believe me, I got loads and loads of stupid phone calls asking me if it was a hoax, pre-meditated or if Haye had bottled it. Well, they were complete and utter nonsense. Absolutely ridiculous. Cut down: David Haye and Tyson Fury have both been stopped by a cut Yes, people will be sitting there analysing what they think Haye and Adam Booth did wrong. Yes, there will

be conspiracy theories going on all over the place but the bottom line, these things do happen in boxing. It is a casualty of war. That’s how it is. People will ask about the sparring, it being a week from fight time. Well, everyone does it differently. People used to stop two weeks out; some people stopped a week out and others went right up until the Wednesday or Thursday. Yes, there will be conspiracy theories going on all over the place but the bottom line is these things do happen in boxing. It is a casualty of war. That’s how it is.

Wayne Rooney admits Manchester United ‘not good enough’ in derby defeat by Manchester City United were beaten 4-1 by Manuel Pellegrini's men, their heaviest away defeat in the fixture since 2004. Rooney scored a late consolation for United - making him the highest scorer in the derby with 11 - and he was the only player absolved of blame by boss David Moyes. "It is not good enough. We know we have to improve and stop giving these sloppy goals away. Rooney told MUTV: "We know we have to improve and stop giving these sloppy goals away.” "It is not nice to lose to City. It was a bad result and we are all extremely disappointed. It is nice to score but it means nothing. "The most important thing today was the points and we have come away with none." Next up for United are their old rivals Liverpool in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night. The Reds will be bolstered by the return of Luis Suarez, giving an additional twist to what is always a passionate occasion. Moyes - Not good enough Rooney said: "We have all grown up, whether it is Manchester, Liverpool or somewhere else having local derbies. "It is not nice when you lose one. I have been there as a fan and now as a player. Thankfully we have another massive game against Liverpool. "It is the ideal game for us. Any game against Liverpool, whether it is a friendly, Capital One Cup or Premier League, is massive. "We have to try and get the victory so we can put this defeat to the back of our minds.
