LETTER FROM THE Editor

Hello again and welcome to the latest instalment of Vapouround Magazine, the team and I have been working tirelessly on yet another bumper pack edition.

When I cast my eyes over the headlines for this issue, I feel an ominous sense of déjà-vu.

The stories about Australia taking draconian measures to curb vaping and illicit sale issues facing the industry, all seemed too familiar.

I don’t understand why, despite the colossal public health benefits to e-cigarettes, there is still a moral war raging over vaping.

But for all the negative news and bizarre attacks on the most successful smoking cessation tool, I’m happy to say that there are also a few positives to boost the industry’s spirits.

The eighth annual Vapouround Global Awards were a huge success, hearing nothing but positive feedback after speaking to various individuals at the Vaper Expo UK the day after.

The opportunity to come together and celebrate the many wins for the industry

comes few and far between, so our highly anticipated show has always been the perfect place to do just that.

However, as we wave goodbye to the Vapouround Global Awards for 2023, we say hello to our Middle East and North Africa Vape Awards in Dubai.

Giving both the household names and of course the exciting new brands their chance at getting their hands on one of our lucrative awards.

Both the Middle Eastern and North African regions’ blossoming vape markets have been nothing short of a complete triumph, pushing the global industry further than ever before.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Vapouround journalist Hannah Rhodes selects her top picks of short vape-related stories and research making news around the world.

SOUND THE Alarm

Businessman Simon

Hassett has taken it upon himself to design and create a vape detector to keep sneaky students from vaping in school bathrooms. With a background in software, the entrepreneur was tasked with helping teachers to find a cheap anti-vaping solution following an increase in the amount of youths puffing in the toilets. Several schools in Hampshire have started using the homemade devices and have reported that in week one of having the detectors, there were 17-22 alerts each day. The number of alerts then dropped to between eight and 11 after using the ‘alarms for just two weeks.

IN THE Bin

New Zealand’s Health Minister –Ayesha Verrall – has announced a nationwide ban on disposable vapes with efforts to begin in August 2023. New vape shops will also not be allowed near schools or Maori meeting places and flavors like ‘Cotton Candy’ to be barred in favor for more generic e-liquids such as ‘Berry’. This comes following the country’s recent chokehold on smoking as it continues to phase into a near-total prohibition on tobacco sales with a current eight percent of the population continuing to smoke.

Labour Leader – Kier Starmer – has disclosed his latest vision to change advertising plans by banning vapes from being advertised and branded to appeal to children. During a speech in Essex, the Party Leader said he will make products which are harmful to our children’s health –specifically vapes – unavailable to be shown on TV before 9 p.m. Following on from Starmer’s comments, Rishi Sunak has also pledged to look at ways of strengthening marketing rules and has said vapes “look like they are targeted at kids which is ridiculous”.

British Police have warned that vaping behind the wheel could result in a fine of up to five thousand pounds or even a ban from driving - in more severe cases. Whilst the highway code specifically lists smoking as one of the several things to avoid, vaping is being deemed just as dangerous and could result in a serious injury or fatal accident. The vapor that e-cigarettes produce could potentially pose the same distraction, causing serious viewing obstructions whilst driving and making it difficult to stay focused on the road.

Chief Medical Officer Sir Chris Whitty has written an article for The Times outlining the benefits swapping from smoking to vaping can have on the public’s health. “Using vapes is a quitting tool many addicted smokers find effective and given the multiple and immense health risks of smoking it is much safer to vape than to smoke.”

Once addicted, most smokers subsequently want to quit but this is very difficult. The deliberate industry-induced addiction has taken their choice away and is causing entirely preventable illness and death in the UK.

A NEW Potential

New research conducted at The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology in Japan has unlocked the potential e-liquids could have on deadly viruses, such as COVID-19. The latest evidence shows the possible benefits that inhaling ethanol could have when it comes to combating future viruses - without causing serious side effects. Small amounts of ethanol used in experiments on mice with flu-like symptoms showed that once administered, the liquid deactivated the infection within a minute and stopped the virus from replicating cells. The overall experiment determined that the e-liquid was entirely effective in killing the virus in the body.

THE LAND OF THE

Smoke-Free

The US is on its way to a smoke free future according to a recent report conducted by the CDC. A record low 11 percent of the population continue to reach for cigarettes, meanwhile, one in 17 people have made the transition to a less harmful alternative - vaping. In comparison, the 1960’s saw an estimated 42 percent of US adults regularly using tobacco-based products - despite the soaring health conditions linked to smoking. As more bans and tax increases are set to be put into place, it’s likely the number of smokers across the pond, will persist to decrease.

God save THE VAPE

A Milton Keynes vape company has released a bizarre piece of royal memorabilia in the form of disposable vapes modelled on King Charles’ famous ‘sausage’ fingers. The limited-edition set is selling for £49.99 on Riot Labs’ website with royal-themed flavours like “Victoria Sponge”, “Champagne”, and even “Sausage Roll”. Based on the award-winning Riot Bar – the 10-piece collection mirrors the shape and size of the Kings own digits and features his famous gold signet ring. Riot Labs CEO, Ben Johnson said - “We wanted to create a bit of Royal history when choosing e-cigarettes over tobacco is so front of mind.”

Lis-Bon Voyage TO TOBACCO

A new smoking and vaping crackdown is set to be approved in Portugal in hopes of curbing the use and sale of nicotinebased products. The new bill will ban smoking outdoors and near public buildings such as hospitals, bars and sports venues from October 2023. The products will also be prohibited at music festivals. The restricted sale of tobacco will be purchasable in tobacconists, petrol stations and airports by 2025 – discontinuing sales from current vending machine and casinos dispensaries. However restaurants, bars and nightclubs that have dedicated isolated smoking areas will be allowed to continue use until 2030.

Dream TEAM

VOOPOO and ZOVOO have recently announced a collaboration with the Honda One Motorsport racing team in order to highlight innovations in industry-leading technologies. The brands will team up to create cutting-edge social media campaigns and online content to give both vapers and racing fans a chance to engage directly in the partnership. This news follows ELUX’s sponsorship of the Fury vs Chisora boxing match, and the Paris Saint-German football team having an official partnership with Geekvape. New collaborations between vaping companies and sports teams will hopefully expose an entirely new demographic of sports fans to the best quitting tools available.

Hawaiian state legislators have passed a ‘tax parity’ law that applies the same tax rate to vaping products as cigarettes. Recently greenlit by Governor Josh Green, the vape wholesale tax will increase to

70 percent as of January 2024 – making it the highest in the country. Fears of ex-smokers returning to combustible products has risen as the new bill will put an end to the price advantage that drives many smokers to make the switch. A separate tax bill in Hawaii failed in committee earlier this session - as did a bill that would have banned flavoured vaping and tobacco products.

FREE FROM Myers

Anti-vaping leader Matthew Myers will retire as president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids on July 1. Myers has been at the forefront of almost every major event in tobacco control since the 1980s – including recently blocking the adoption of vaping and other low-risk nicotine products. The group have managed a $160 million grant from billionaire Michael Bloomberg specifically designated to combat flavoured vapes and advocated for bans and restrictions on vaping. The current executive vice president of global programs - Yolanda Richardson - will take over as president and CEO whilst Myers will continue to advise from the side-lines.

Leonardo DiCaprio - one of the biggest vape advocates in Hollywood - was just caught vaping at the Cannes Film Festival, almost 15 years after the renowned actor first adopted the habit. A bystander at the annual event discreetly recorded Leo puffing on his vape with a smile on his face, which was then posted to TikTok. The actor is evidently a man of habit, having now been spotted numerous times over the years at Cannes Film Festival with a vape at the ready.

YOUR REQUEST HAS BEEN Denied

The Food and Drug Administration recently shutdown marketing requests from ten companies which manufacture and market 6,500 flavoured e-liquids and e-cigarette products. Imperial Vapours LLC, Savage Enterprises and Big Time Vapes were just some of the businesses not permitted to market or distribute their products within the U.S. The FDA said the premarket tobacco product applications (PMTAs) submitted for a variety of e-cigarette products didn’t provide sufficient evidence to meet current health standards. As of Spring 2020, the health regulator has received more than 26 million PMTAs for new tobacco and e-cigarette products looking to be approved for public release.

THE Big SMOKE

Cancer Research UK (CRUK) have estimated that one in ten Londoners currently smoke – resulting in one tobacco-related death every hour.

CRUK spokesperson - Lynn Daly –said “Most people who smoke want to quit, but they need more support.”

DON’T BE A Beach

The Government has pledged to make the UK smoke-free by 2030 but based on current reports the country is nine years off target with a need to drop smoking by 70 percent. With the number of smokers decreasing every year – it can be said that tobacco control and vaping has helped to further minimize the number of those still smoking.

WORLD No TOBACCO DAY 2023

An Irish environmental charity – Clean Coasts – is on a mission to warn the public about the impact smoking-related litter is having on marine wildlife and surrounding environments. During the Big Beach Clean, volunteers found cigarette butts and disposable vapes to be among the most common items left on Ireland’s picturesque beaches. Contrary to popular belief, cigarette filters are not biodegradable and globally contribute to an estimated 300,000 tons of microfibers unleased into the environment each year. According to research, just one cigarette butt per litre of water releases enough toxins to kill half the freshwater or saltwater fish exposed to it.

READY FOR Vape-off

Travelling vapers flying from Beirut Airport will now have exclusive access to the Middle East’s first e-cigarette lounge thanks to ANDS – owner and distributor of alternative nicotine delivery systems. “Until now vapers have been forced to use smoking lounges in airports, exposing them to a product that many are trying to get away from.” The rooms take a month to build and come with special ventilation and indoor air quality measures. The vape company already serves major retailers including Lagardère Group, Gebr Heinemann and Dufry in airports in the Middle East as well as Europe at Frankfurt and Vienna airports.

GOING Postal

London-listed Chill Brands’ shares skyrocket after the company scores exciting new agreement with specialist carriers to ship nicotine-free vapour products across all US states in June. The deal will allow American customers to opt for delivery from the company directly to their homes despite major carriers continuing to restrict shipment of the goods. A 2019 act blocked the US postal service from shipping fellow vaping brands’ merchandise – preventing many competitors from making online directto-customer sales. Chief Executive of Chill Brands – Callum Sommerton –also reassured customers that their shipping partners would “deploy ageverification protocols” to prevent children from buying the products.

World No Tobacco Day is an annual event held on May 31st that aims to inform the public on the dangers of tobacco. This year’s celebration brings light to the crop production and marketing opportunities for tobacco farmers with hopes of encouraging those using their land to grow the product to seek healthier alternatives. The tobacco plant can not only take up space for sustainable crops, it can also deplete the soil of important nutrients needed to grow future generations of produce.

The Institute for Economic Affairs think tank has released a report ranking 30 European countries based on their vaping regulations. The UK currently stands top of the list with the lightest restrictions on advertising and has no specific taxes on vape devices. British ministers have since come under pressure to follow other nations on cracking down on e-cigarettes – such as banning single-use disposable vapes and fruity flavored e-liquids. However, when it comes to tobacco, the UK rules the roost in international ranking with strict smoking bans and is often described as the worst place in Europe to be a smoker.

Let-Down-Under WHAT A Let-Down-Under

Australia has set out its plans to ban recreational vaping and introduce tobacco tax in major public health crackdown.

Words: Grace Lynk

VM44 l 21 NEWS

New reforms proposed by the Australian government will see a nationwide disposable vapes ban.

This would result in a major crackdown on the import of nonprescription products, amid fears of a ‘epidemic’ issued by health experts. Mark Butler, the health minister for Australia, is the man behind these radical changes, following fears that vaping products are creating a new generation of nicotine addicts across the country.

In a press release, Butler said: “I am determined to stamp out this public health menace because that’s what I think it genuinely is. “They should only be available in therapeutic settings, which is essentially pharmacies.

“It was not sold as a recreational product — especially not one for our kids. But that is what it has become: the biggest loophole in Australian history.”

Those relying on vapes to help curb their smoking habit will find e-cigarettes restricted to pharmacies, with harsher quality standards being introduced for vaping products.

These minimum quality standards will limit flavours, colours, nicotine concentrates and other ingredients in vapes that are currently designed to act as cessation tools.

Nicotine vapes already require a prescription in Australia, but the industry remains so poorly regulated that the country’s black market is still thriving.

Colin Mendelsohn, the founding chairman of the Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association said: “The vast majority don’t have a prescription, less than ten

percent in fact. “So the response has been we’ve created a huge black market which is filling that gap and supplying illegal, unregulated products freely to young people.”

Despite the concerns of underground selling, Mark Butler has insisted that the government will make it easier for people to get a prescription for ‘legitimate therapeutic use’ following the reforms.

amount to prohibition.

Christopher Snowdon, a vaping and harm reduction advocate said: “Australia is not a leader in tobacco or vaping control. “It is an international laughingstock that has created a massive unforced error and is too proud – or too stupid – to back down.”

Anger has been intensified by the fact that tobacco tax is only being raised by five percent over the next three years, with no talk of a cigarette ban in the health minister’s reforms. Vaping Bogan, an Australian Youtuber, said in a video addressing the issue: “Their idea is that a more expensive cigarette is a less attractive cigarette, which we all know is rubbish.”

The vaping personality also said in the same video: “If history has taught us anything about prohibition, it’s that it doesn’t work in shutting down a black market.”

Other countries have taken different approaches towards the future of vaping, with the UK introducing the world-first ‘swap to stop’ scheme and New Zealand regulating vapes like cigarettes.

At current, in order to prescribe vaping products, a medical practitioner must apply to become an ‘authorised prescriber’.

Not only will pharmacies be the only place where vapes are available, all products will require pharmaceutical-like wrapping following Mark Butler’s concerns surrounding ‘shiny packaging and added sweet flavours’. These reforms have been met with an influx of backlash, with tobacco companies, vaping lobbyists and even harm reduction experts believing the new rules will

David Littleproud, the National Party leader, has previously argued that Australia should go down the same route as New Zealand, but Mark Butler has confirmed the government have no intention of following suit. As it stands, disposable vapes will vanish from the country outside of pharmacies, whereas the only impact on cigarettes will be a slight increase in price over the next three years.

An outright ban will see millions of vapers reverting to combustible tobacco, ironically creating a worse ‘epidemic’ that will likely be met with even more prohibition by the Australian government.

IF HISTORY HAS TAUGHT US ANYTHING ABOUT PROHIBITION, IT’S THAT IT DOESN’T WORK IN SHUTTING DOWN A BLACK MARKET.

Policymakers are concerned after high levels of heavy metals found in illegal vapes confiscated from school children.
Words: Grace Lynk
28 l VM44 NEWS

The disposables were tested at The Inter Scientific Laboratory in Liverpool, where it was revealed that most of the 18 vapes analysed didn’t meet regulatory standards.

The results indicated that children using illegal vapes might be inhaling more than twice the daily safe amount of lead, and nine times the safe amount of nickel.

High levels of lead and nickel exposure can seriously damage and affect the central nervous system and hinder brain development, especially in younger children.

Some of the devices were even found to contain high levels of harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, both of which are abundant in cigarette smoke.

The metals discovered in the vapes have been revealed to come directly from the e-liquids, not from the heating element as originally suggested by the lab.

David Lawson, co-founder of The Inter Scientific Laboratory, said: “I’ve been a biochemist for fifteen years and I’ve never seen vape products that contain any detectable levels of metal, let alone these levels.”

“None of these should be on the market –they break all the rules on permitted levels of metal. They are the worst set of results I’ve ever seen.”

Of the 18 vapes tested, two were imitations of brands considered the most popular on the UK market, accelerating concern as to the safety of illicit devices in the hands of children.

The tests also found compounds called carbonyls, which break down into harsh chemicals as found in cigarette smoke at ten times the expected level in legal vapes.

John Britton, epidemiology professor at the University of Nottingham said: “The carbonyls are mildly carcinogenic and so with sustained use will increase the risk of cancer.

“But in legal products, the levels of all of these things are extremely low so the lifetime risk to the individual is extremely small.”

The UK government have currently invested three million in an effort to curb sales of illegal vapes, especially with regard to young people and school students.

This is to ensure that any e-cigarettes or e-liquids not registered with Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) will be removed from shops to cut the number of children accessing unregulated devices.

Following a recent investigation led by BBC News, vaping devices confiscated from school pupils at Baxter College have been discovered to contain high levels of lead, nickel and chromium.
None of these should be on the market – they break all the rules on permitted levels of metal. They are the worst set of results I’ve ever seen “ VM44 l 29

FEELM has finally issued a solution to this problem at the recent Vaper Expo UK…a welcome announcement to many vapers who feel that 600 puffs simply aren’t enough.

Unveiled on the 13 May, FEELM’s innovative disposable vape solution showcases three technological breakthroughs. A sensible design, a constant power control system and the ceramic

FEELM Max boasts a cotton-free design, resulting in a boosted puff count by more than 30 percent and providing around 800 puffs, setting a new precedent for 2ml disposables.

The ceramic coil is entirely compliant with all UK regulations while still intending to deliver a superior vaping experience by decreasing impurities from the heating process and increasing disposable life.

Max ceramic coil 800 puffs become the new normal amongst the British vaping industry.
TPD and TRPR regulations in the UK require that disposable vapes cannot have more than a 2ml liquid capacity, limiting the puff count to around 600 or less across most e-cigarettes.
32 l VM44 NEWS
Words: Grace Lynk

The new technological advancement has been met with positive reviews, with Neil Cozens, a vaping advocate, recently reviewing the new disposable range.

He said: “The S1 ceramic coil certainly has the edge over standard cotton wicking. Not only was the inhale silky smooth but the cloud production was fantastic.”

FEELM’s growing success has been aided significantly by the strong collaborations forged with clients and industry partners, particularly Totally Wicked and RELX.

Marcus Saxton, CEO of Totally Wicked, said: “FEELM’s innovative technology has enhanced the consumer experience…

“As a partner of FEELM, Totally Wicked shares the responsibility of promoting sustainability in the atomisation industry through active participation in the recycling system.”

This is in light of FEELM launching the first industrial whole-chain recycling scheme alongside their new coil, collaborating with RELX to combat the potential harm of vapes in landfills.

Bing Du, founder of RELX International said: “Thanks to the groundbreaking technology of FEELM Max, and driven by our legendary partnership with FEELM, RELX International is on course to revolutionise the vaping experience across the globe.”

The partnerships with FEELM from both Totally Wicked and RELX focus predominantly on innovation with regards to changing the overall vaping experience while working towards sustainability.

The new ceramic coil might change the face of vaping as we currently know it, increasing puff count and ensuring that consumers will get their money’s worth when it comes to purchasing disposables.

It’s also a big step towards achieving a greener future for vaping, with their new recycling scheme serving as inspiration for other companies to minimise their environmental impact.

As winners of the Outstanding Contribution to the Vape Industry at the Vapouround Global Awards, FEELM continue to impress with their new technologies and ideas.

Fadi Maayta, Founder and President of ANDS said: “We want to be a leader in our industry, a significant disrupter…the UK will be our first market outside the MEA.

“The UK is an ideal springboard for our expansion into Europe due to its sensible policy stance in relation to vaping.”

Its founder previously held senior executive positions at Juul Labs and Philip Morris International and is confident that this new venture will become a global powerhouse for alternative nicotine products.

With heaps of ambition, an experienced team and the ability to make fast decisions to gain commercial advantage, the company are assured about the success they will achieve in the next 5 to 10 years.

ANDS aims to drive additional growth in the global travel retail sector - worth $51 billion in 2021- serving major retailers such as Lagardere Group, Gebr Heinemann and Dufy AG in airports in the Middle East.

This track record will of course be built upon within Europe where the company already supplies vapes to retail outlets at Frankfurt and Vienna airports.

To ensure that vapers no longer have to share areas with tobacco smokers when flying, it will also be investing in vaping rooms at airports across the world and the UK.

The world’s first room dedicated solely to vaping at an airport has recently opened in Beirut and we can only hope that many others will soon follow with the work ANDS aim to do.

Middle East-based ANDS, a trademark owner and distributor of alternative nicotine delivery systems, is looking to drive revenues up to $500 million in the next three years following its expansion into the EU.

The new market entrant is keen to establish itself in the UK during 2023 with hopes to grow into a number of European markets throughout 2024 including France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

The main focus of the company will be on recyclable vapes, nicotine pouches and a new concept in heatnot-burn technology which will lead them all the way into 2025.

THERE IS A YOUTH UPTAKE ISSUE WITH Vaping and alcohol… BUT ONLY ONE MAKES HEADLINE NEWS

UKVIA Director General John Dunne was in Amsterdam recently where he discussed how vaping was treated differently to other age-restricted products.

It was a great experience to represent the UKVIA at the recent ENDS 2023 Conference in Amsterdam which came as the industry is in the spotlight more than ever before.

I have always enjoyed attending the ENDS conferences in London so it was a particular delight when they announced that this year’s ENDS 2023 event would be held in Amsterdam.

Apart from the change of location, the format was exactly the same with two days of debate, presentations, networking and discussions, all kept on track with the military precision of Arcus Compliance Managing Director Robert Sidebottom.

With youth vaping the number one hot topic, it was no surprise that this was on the ENDS agenda.

Alongside Jeannie Cameron the CEO of JCIC International and We Vape Director Mark Oates, we debated why vaping was treated differently from two other age restricted products, combustible tobacco and alcohol.

What was immediately clear from the discussion is that young people experiment with both cigarettes and alcohol but if you look at the media you would never know this.

For example, the media will be all over a story saying that there have been 32 hospital admissions from young people with vaping-related illnesses while totally ignoring the 32,000 alcohol-related admissions for people of the same age.

It is also funny how the anti-vaping lobby are ok with adults vaping as long as the experience is as unpleasant as possible. They totally fail to see that the reason that it has been so successful in getting smokers to quit is because the vast array of flavours out there make it a pleasurable experience for adults to enjoy nicotine.

I must have more bottles of flavoured gin at home than I care to admit, but nobody is jumping up and down and calling for those flavours to be banned, even though they are often exactly the same ones used in vaping products. And isn’t it funny how the mint, watermelon, fruit and cherry flavours commonly found in nicotine gum are never mentioned?

If the argument holds for one agerestricted product then logically it must hold for them all. So if flavoured vapes must be banned on child

46 l VM44 NEWS

““

protection grounds then so must flavoured vodka or gin.

The fact that there are these double standards just goes to show that this entire argument on banning flavours is without merit.

It is used because anti-vaping crusaders know the media will latch onto and the false claims that the industry only introduced flavours to hook a new generation of children of nicotine is clickbait gold dust.

This is a topic which comes up with every round of media interviews I do. No matter what the topic is, the interviewer will quickly pivot to this old favourite and ask: “But what about the flavours John? They are surely just there to appeal to children because adults don’t need flavoured cigarettes so why would they need flavoured vapes?”

And while I am happy to accept that some journalists may really

believe this, I strongly suspect that others keep returning to the topic because they know it will spark debate and discussion from their audience.

In fact, I talk to journalist all the time and many openly admit that they would prefer not to write positive vaping stories because nobody would read it, while the negative ones really gets their audiences riled up.

And finally…

I got into a rather heated discussion with someone looking to join the UKVIA at the recent Vaper Expo UK in Birmingham. The big issue for me was that the vape products he was selling featured kittens all over them and he had a hard time understanding why I had a problem with this.

While this is an amusing anecdote it neatly highlights why the UKVIA is calling on the Government to give the MHRA new powers to examine packaging and product design as part of the initial approvals process.

I PREDICT A Vape-Riot

Introducing the OAP’s who are causing a TikTok riot in the name of vaping advocacy and harm reduction.

Words: Grace Lynk

48 l VM44 NEWS

Dubbing themselves the ‘Anti-Smoking Squad’, Vape Riot consists of a small group of golden agers who have set out on a mission to prove quitting cigarettes is possible at any age.

The regularly updated TikTok page is teeming with energy and colour, with the team of seniors all claiming to have a new zest for life since they quit smoking.

At the forefront of this social media campaign is Ruth Riot, the face and idea-woman in front of the camera with a goal to help others quit using alternative techniques.

She said: “I used to be a smoker but have recently stopped. I’m now feeling healthier than before and have since been enjoying a new lease of life to the max.”

Besides using their words to start a raucous, the OAP’s have taken to patrolling the streets and approaching strangers with cigarettes with an inspiring proposition.

At current, two lucky individuals have been offered the opportunity to tick something huge off their bucket list, all expenses paid, on the condition that they quit smoking.

The generous agreement saw one young man complete a lifelong dream of bungee jumping and another woman on a free trip to Paris with the Vape Riot crew.

If playing fairy godmother wasn’t enough, the seniors behind the camera are also promoting their diss track against smoking, recorded and performed in a studio.

The caption of the anti-smoking song is labelled; ‘They’ve escaped the care home to lay down the hottest bars of 2023’, a reminder that life can still be full of adventure in old age.

Although their goodwill and rapping are both incredibly entertaining, the flamboyant displays of enormous cigarettes being crushed, beaten and paraded in a hearse are what remain the most captivating.

The grandeur performances have demonstrated a tank crushing a car of tobacco, seen a reenacted fight between a full-scale vape and cigarette, and even a full funeral procession.

Ruth Riot said: “Cigarette smoking is in fast decline, and with so many ways to quit, it’s the end of the line for tobacco. Personally, I think this is cause for celebration.”

Perhaps deemed an eccentric ‘celebration’ by most, the Vape Riot crew rented a hearse to rejoice the death of cigarettes with a full funeral procession through the streets of London.

After loading the vehicle with enlarged cigarettes in place of a coffin, the crew drove past Globe House, the building of British American Tobacco’s headquarters.

Ruth, as the primary spokesperson for the account, said: “We had a lot of fun making some noise before they chased us off! Join the RIOT squad and let’s end smoking for good.”

CIGARETTE SMOKING IS IN FAST DECLINE, AND WITH SO MANY WAYS TO QUIT, IT’S THE END OF THE LINE FOR TOBACCO. PERSONALLY, I THINK THIS IS CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION

“I’ve smoked for 11 years and this is the only thing that’s made me think of stopping.”

“Ngl this worked better than any other anti-smoking ad I’ve seen.”

“Go off, granny! Love it, haha”

“This video is the only reason I quit”

“This is a fantastic piece of media”

From anti-smoking diss tracks to fake funerals for cigarettes, Vape Riot have taken TikTok by storm with their unconventional methods to help members of the public leave tobacco behind.

THAT ’ S A WRAP...On Smoking

Smoking on screen has been a contentious fixture in TV and film for decades. With so many characters being renowned for the nasty habit, it’s hard to imagine these ‘iconic’ smokers without a cigarette in hand.

Words: Grace Lynk

52 l VM44 NEWS

Despite the glamourisation of smoking remaining prevalent in modern cinema, it’s important to note that vaping is now starting to surface onto the silver screen and with this change comes an influx of opportunity. What would these characters look like without a lighter at the ready and a cigarette in mouth? Without further ado, here is a concise catalogue of tobacco-ridden characters reimagined as vaping pundits.

Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

It’s difficult to picture Aubrey Hepburn as Holly in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ (1961) without the renowned cigarette holder she so adores throughout the film…

But thrust her into the 21st century, and it comes without question that the fashion mogul would indulge in a sleek e-cigarette with hoards of champagneflavour e-liquids tucked away in a designer purse.

Champagne for breakfast, lunch and dinner all nicely wrapped in a Tiffany hued blue e-cigarette could be nothing short of a dream for this luxuriously lavish protagonist.

VM44 l 53

Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction

Continuing with films from the roaring 90s, we have Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction’ (1994), where the glorious Uma Thurman graced us with her breakthrough role as Mia Wallace.

A replacement for the fictitious cigarette brand ‘Red Apple’ that Mia smokes throughout the film, what better fit could there be for this feisty character than a red apple box mod?

Although a direct contradiction to her ‘don’t be a square’ outlook on life, a box mod is a perfect exception to this rule, allowing her to leave the cigarettes behind and prioritise winning dance-offs.

Henry Hill in Goodfellas

In an entirely different ballpark to the elegant Holly Golightly, we have eminent gangster and avid smoker Henry Hill in Goodfellas (1990).

In lieu of a champagne e-liquid for Holly, and in line with Henry’s mafioso way of living, a red wine e-liquid would act as a perfect replacement for his rigorous consumption of alcohol and tobacco.

Perhaps it would be just enough of an abnormal vaping experience that living ‘like a schnook’ would not feel like such a boring fate for the American mobster.

54 l VM44 NEWS

Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders

It would be hard to sit here and assign anything other than a tobacco flavoured cigalike to the former gangster turned member of parliament, Tommy Shelby.

There is a running gag implemented throughout the series by the showrunners that Tommy is never once seen eating, heavily implying that the Brummie businessman only survives on his trusted cigarettes.

A tobacco flavoured disposable would not only provide a similar experience but would actually be a much healthier alternative for the stone-faced top boy of the ‘Peaky Blinders’.

Fleabag in Fleabag

Although this nameless protagonist is prone to blasphemous relations with a man of God, it goes without saying that a ‘holy water’ flavour probably isn’t on the cards for ‘Fleabag’.

Instead, considering her job in a guinea-pig café, a coffee flavoured disposable would be ideal. After all, who has the time to refill an open pod system when seducing a priest is your top priority?

It goes without saying that her uptight sister and unbearable godmother would have more respect for this ill-mannered protagonist if, for once, she made healthier life choices.

“Managing the supply chain effectively has been one of the major challenges that we have encountered on our journey.

To overcome this, we have established strong relationships with external suppliers.

Recognising the critical dependence of supply chains for seamless manufacturing and nationwide customer support, we have implemented a robust management strategy.

A key aspect of this involves efficiently handling a substantial inventory of four to five million bottles on-site in the UK.

We have devised meticulous systems for organising and monitoring our bottle inventory such as optimising warehouse facilities to ensure precise stock counts and efficient retrieval as needed.”

Has Juice Sauz got anything in the pipeline that consumers can look forward to?

“We are dedicated to innovation as well as staying at the forefront of the industry and while we can’t disclose specific details, we can confirm that the company has an exciting topsecret project underway.

Future of Future of

SUSTAINABILITY

Vapouround explores a collection of brands all working to secure a greener, safer future for the vaping industry.

THE

Using vapes as cessation tools is nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to quitting tobacco, but with the climate crisis growing daily, it’s easy to feel partly accountable.

With disposables piling up in landfills and plastic pollution ever-growing, it’s nice to have a reminder of all the good being done to prevent the problem from getting worse.

There are a host of different companies who have used their initiative to work towards a sustainable future when it comes to vaping.

Many of those looking to curate a greener future should be building their recycling schemes on the new UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) ‘Greenprint’, a 22-point plan to inhibit disposables from damaging the environment further.

The plan directly calls for retail, consumers, product design, waste infrastructure and regulation to make effective changes in order to secure a landfillfree future for vaping.

In response to the action plan, many companies have elected to approach the issue in different ways, mainly

through either free vape incentives and new dropoff points for disposables.

Blo Bar were among the first in 2023 to initiate a scheme which encouraged users to recycle their empty vapes when that dreaded light signals the 600 puffs are out.

A spokesperson for the company said: “With incorrect disposal of vapes on the rise, the new scheme offers participants a free disposable vape when they send in ten used vapes from any brand to be recycled.”

Royal Mail have proposed a similar scheme, where

consumers will also be given free vape devices in exchange for returning used products through recycling centres across London, Birmingham and Manchester.

The scheme is being facilitated by the SMOORE-owned brand FEELM, a vape company credited with designing ceramic coils as a recyclable alternative to cotton coils currently used in many popular disposables.

Ruiqi Wang, spokesperson for SMOORE, said: “This is the first industrial whole chain recycling scheme, including manufacturers, brands,

delivery companies, waste management companies and retailers and ultimately the consumers.”

Veolia, a global resource management company, have also invested in drop-off points at vape retailers across the UK, facilitating the collection and transport of the devices.

The nationwide recycling service will allow retailers to sign up for in-store customer drop-off containers that are specifically designed to minimise fire risks from lithium batteries.

Veolia will then assist in transporting the

disposables to recycling facilities where valuable materials from the devices, such as lithium or nickel, can be extracted and reused in car batteries.

The first vape retailer to sign up to the scheme was Totally Wicked, a nationwide network of 154 stores.

Donald Macphail, Chief Operating Officer of Veolia, said: “Our new nationwide vape collection service will provide a safe recycling avenue to retailers who provide the mandatory take back scheme for vapes.

“As well as ensure that we can extract the valuable materials contained within.”

Outside of recycling schemes via drop-off points and collection services, partnerships between non-profits and vaping companies are also raising awareness for the better.

Elux recently won the Best Sustainable Initiative at the Vapouround Global Awards for its partnership with Project Greenwings, a non-profit flight crew organisation on a mission to elevate environmental sustainability.

Responses overall have been positive, with many environmental activists and political leaders excited for big changes.

Labour MP Mary Glindon said: “It is encouraging to see new vape recycling schemes being launched, and I hope that vapers will explore how to properly dispose of their devices.”

All of these forwardthinking schemes in light of the UKVIA initiative will surely give hope to vapers who care about the environment without wanting to go coldturkey.

Advocate Voices

Advocates are the driving force behind the industry with their work aiding people to making the big switch. So, this issue we wanted to shed some light on one of the many voices behind the screen…

Words: Emily Malia

The vaping industry relies heavily on advocates and without their sheer passion and dedication to the cause of aiding smokers to make the all-important switch, it would be doomed.

We’re keen to shed light on advocates who dedicate so much of their time to raising awareness on the harms of smoking and lead people down a much healthier path. This issue we spoke to James Reid, a 60 year-old exAustralian Senior Border Officer, father, grandfather, avid fisherman and of course, vaping advocate.

James smoked cigarettes for over 40 years of his life, during which he experienced countless unsuccessful attempts to

quit after trying what felt like everything available.

He tried everything, from patches to gums, some dubious natural remedies and of course the hardest one…cold turkey, but nothing seemed to do the trick.

It wasn’t until 2008, when a colleague and him ordered e-cigarettes from the United States, that he tried vaping for the very first time.

On first impressions, James thought it tasted awful, gave very little flavour and often leaked – instantly getting off on the wrong foot when starting out on his vaping journey.

AMPLIFYING
66 l VM44 FEATURE

Reid said: “I still stuck with that awful thing for over six months before the capsules ran out and I just gave up on it and went back to smoking.”

After going back to cigarettes for what was another nine years, James stumbled upon a Facebook post about a new style of vaping device and was instantly intrigued. He said: “I found my local vape shop and received invaluable advice on devices, liquids and information concerning the legality of importing liquid nicotine into Australia.

“I gave up cigarettes overnight and have never looked back.

“It was literally overnight. I went to bed one night a smoker and started vaping when I got up in the morning.” Around the same time of his switch, James joined a range of vaping groups across social media and found that discussing the subject with fellow vapers helped with his own journey.

The vaping advocate said: “As questions were asked, I could easily find answers and not only rapidly gained knowledge but made a number of new friends also on their way to becoming cigarette free.”

On top of his vaping groups, James was so inspired, that he teamed up with other vapers to start their very own Facebook group, specialising in the use of refillable ‘pod’ devices.

Four years down the line, the group has over 1000 members ranging from early twenties to their 70’s.

It’s been incredibly fulfilling for James to work with that many people, playing a small part in assisting them in their ‘quitting journeys’, hearing some wonderful stories along the way.

He said: “From people experiencing health issues to new expectant parents desperate to stop smoking, we’ve worked with people who have quit overnight to those who have struggled immensely.”

Overall, it seems the success rate of our members has been astounding and profoundly affected James’s personal experience with vaping.

The multitude of success stories he’s been involved in has resulted in James becoming a passionately driven advocate for the benefits of vaping.

He said: “In 2020 I created a Twitter account and quickly found myself immersed in a worldwide group of equally passionate advocates.

“Consisting of ‘amateur’ advocates like myself through to internationally renowned Doctors, Scientists and academics from across the globe.”

They each share knowledge, research and studies whilst supporting and encouraging each other to keep working towards better outcomes for Tobacco Harm Reduction initiatives worldwide.

James said: “The knowledge that I have gained into all aspects of the vaping industry, Government policies and scientific evidence is only outweighed by the comradery, acquaintances and friendship that I have gained.”

“This has enabled me to step up my advocacy and given me the confidence to continue my efforts to promote vaping as a truly remarkable method of tobacco harm reduction.”

In recent years, James has submitted numerous papers to Parliamentary inquiries and presented at a Federal Parliamentary Senate inquiry into Tobacco Harm Reduction as a consumer.

He has recently been invited to join industry working groups to discuss changes in Government policy relating to vaping and tobacco harm reduction in general.

James said: “I know that in years to come, e-cigarettes will be hailed as one of - if not the - greatest advancements in harm reduction and health improvement in modern history.

“I know that through vaping, I have regained many years of life, allowing me to watch my family evolve and see my grandchildren grow up over many years to come.”

I KNOW THAT IN YEARS TO COME, E-CIGARETTES WILL BE HAILED AS ONE OF - IF NOT THE - GREATEST ADVANCEMENTS IN HARM REDUCTION AND HEALTH IMPROVEMENT IN MODERN HISTORY. VM44 l 67

Vapouround’s Industry Special

The industry is in a critical position. Decisions made in the coming months have the possibility to change the ‘vaping norm’ entirely.

Vapouround has complied three key industry stories, taking a deep dive into changes, threats and compliance of our market.

HAS ANYBODY TOLD TRADING STANDARDS?

With only 2ml of liquid allowed in UK tanks, one leading vape brand says they have found a way of getting the puff count to 800 while remaining firmly within the law.

Vapouround Editor Oliver Smith recently attended the new FEELM Max product launch during Vaper Expo UK for what was billed as the unveiling of the ‘world’s first ceramic coil disposable solution.’

Here he gives his thoughts on the event, poses some interesting questions raised by the announcement and discusses recent developments regarding enforcement of existing vape regulations.

Just as it was about universally acknowledged that 600 puffs is the benchmark for a fully-compliant vape device with a regulation 2ml tank…it seems we may have to think again.

Chinese-based FEELM, the flagship brand of atomization tech company SMOORE, say that 800 puffs is the new benchmark for single use devices using their latest hi-tech ceramic heating technology.

It reminds me of the classic TV adverts for a well-known brand of washing up liquid saying their product lasted far

longer than their rivals, backed up by a long line of clean plates to prove it.

Closer to home, there has been a lot of focus on vape tank sizes in recent months, following the ELF BAR overfilling incident which led to national media coverage and the withdrawal of their non-compliant products from sale.

FEELM say it has taken five years of intense research to get to the point of launching this ceramic technology to the single-use vape market and the facts and figures they provided at their launch event were certainly.

If you weren’t there, think of the way Apple launch their new iPhones or iPads and you will get the idea.

One key message was that their ceramic heating technology uses virtually every drop of the e-liquid as they do not require the absorbent cotton coils found in many regular devices which trap liquid inside like a wet towel.

ENFORCEMENT OF VAPE REGULATIONS IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE YOU CAN HAVE ALL THE RULES IN THE WORLD BUT THEY ULTIMATELY COUNT FOR NOTHING IF ENFORCEMENT IS WEAK
68 l VM44 FEATURE

The 600-puff benchmark is synonymous with legal 2ml tank size so there is a danger that Trading Standards enforcement officers may regard an 800 puff count device as being noncompliant.

On the subject of enforcement, as we report elsewhere in this issue, a preliminary investigation by Arcus Compliance has shown that in the last three years only two successful prosecutions have been made against retailers for underage/illicit sales across six major UK cities. Two prosecutions in three years! No wonder rogue retailers believe it is ‘open season’ to sell to children because there is virtually no chance of ever getting caught if these numbers are correct.

I also saw UKVIA Director General John Dunne on TV the other day explaining that one retailer was fined just £26 for selling vapes to children. This is madness.

Dunne says the fines should be ramped up to £10,000 and I completely agree. I also welcome Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s recent announcement of a £3m fund to launch an ‘illicit

vape enforcement squad’ to clampdown on underage vape sales.

Arcus Compliance Managing Director Robert Sidebottom makes a very valid point when he says this is a welcome start but is ‘a far cry from the final solution and more intervention is clearly needed’.

Enforcement of vape regulations is very important because you can have all the rules in the world but they ultimately count for nothing if enforcement is weak.

I very much look forward to the release of the full report from Arcus Compliance, and if it as bad as the initial findings suggest, then hopefully this will provide a wake-up call for the government.

To ensure that enough funding is made available so that the new vape enforcement squads are more than just a good newspaper headline.

But if 800 puffs really is the new benchmark for single use devices powered by FEELM’s hi-tech ceramic technology let’s hope that somebody has thought to tell Trading Standards.

WHILE THIS SOUNDS GREAT, WILL IT CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH ENFORCEMENT OF EXISTING VAPING REGULATIONS?

A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE

GEEK BAR has issued alerts over illegal and illicit products amid reports of injuries and harmful chemicals

WE TAKE GREAT CARE TO ENSURE THAT CONSUMERS CAN BE CONFIDENT THAT THE PRODUCTS THEY BUY FROM OUR TRUSTED RETAIL PARTNERS ARE GENUINE GEEK BAR DEVICES.

Unlike genuine products – which have undergone stringent emissions testing to ensure they are free from harmful chemicals and meet all of the UK’s regulatory and consumer safety standards –there are no such checks on illicit products.

Recent independent testing of illegal vapes which had been purchased in the UK, revealed that they contained dangerous levels of lead, nickel and chromium, in

some cases up to ten times above safe limits.

Even more worryingly, ‘a small number’ of school children in Hampshire reportedly needed hospital treatment after using illegal vape products which contained additives which made them ill.

Allen Yang, CEO of GEEK BAR, said it was more important than ever that vapers knew the difference between compliant legal products and potentially deadly illegal ones.

He said: “It is abundantly clear that illegal products, which have undergone no safety checks whatsoever and which could make consumers seriously ill, are currently on the market.

“Consumers must be really careful about that they buy and where they buy from. Being offered devices from ‘under the counter’, from random strangers or at a price which seems too good to be true should all set alarm bells ringing.”

leading vape brands, has invested more than £120m in a new 95% automated intelligent factory which uses cutting edge technology to ensure the highest product standards.

It has also recently launched its new MELOSO vape range which features its bespoke VPU (Vaping Processing Unit).

While there is no suggestion that any of the illicit products are being passed of as genuine GEEK BAR vapes, Yang said the company would clamp down hard on anyone attempting to do so.

He added: “All GEEK BAR products go through the most rigorous quality control tests throughout the entire production process.

“We take great care to ensure that consumers can be confident that the products they buy from our trusted retail partners are genuine GEEK BAR devices.

“Unfortunately, as vaping gets ever more popular it attracts unscrupulous characters who will happily sell illegal products which put anyone using them at the risk of serious harm.”

Its parent company GEEKVAPE has already shut down a huge counterfeiting operation in the Philippines and has teams of lawyers ready to pounce when new counterfeit operations are detected around the globe.

Yang also called for much tougher enforcement of existing UK vape laws and backed proposals from the UK Vaping Industry Association which include fines of up to £10,000 for those selling illegal products or selling vapes to children.

A licensing scheme which would help fund enhanced Trading Standards enforcement and new powers to allow regulators to screen out child-friendly imagery or packaging as part of the initial approvals process.

Unfortunately, as vaping gets ever more popular it attracts unscrupulous characters who will happily sell illegal products which put anyone using them at the risk of serious harm

Data gathered through FOI requests by Arcus Compliance has shone a light on the activities of local Trading Standards in addressing youth access and illegal products.

The findings, which are due to be released in full later this month, show that, across six major UK cities, just two shops were successfully prosecuted for underage/illicit sales between 2021 and April 2023

Further, the highest total amount of fines given out across these same cities – which have a shared population of almost three million people – over the same time period was £1,878.

This is less than the current maximum fine that can be issued to just one offender at £2,500 and is considerably less than the £10,000 on-the-spot fines that much of the sector, led by the UK

Vaping Industry Association, has been asking for.

The data also covers the activity of Trading Standards teams in individual London Boroughs.

Of the five councils to respond so far, there was one reported successful prosecution and one fine of £1,000.

Robert Sidebottom, Managing Director of Arcus Compliance, said the ‘concerning lack’ of prosecutions and penalties shown by this data demonstrates that the ‘system is in serious distress’.

He said: “Trading Standards have been crying out for additional resources and support for some time and there’s no doubt as to why – without enough boots on the ground, too many rogue traders are getting past thinly spread enforcement officials.

“It’s staggering to see just how few prosecutions there have been and how low the levels of fines are given the huge amount of concern over youth and illicit vaping.

H
JOHN DUNNE, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE UKVIA, SAID: “CLOSING LOOPHOLES AND INTRODUCING BALANCED POLICIES ARE IMPORTANT STEPS.

“We know that Trading Standards departments want and need to be doing more.”

Sidebottom added: “The government recently pledged £3 million to fund a dedicated vape task force as part of its crackdown on the sector, but this is a far cry from the final solution and more intervention is clearly needed.”

Sidebottom questioned whether actions like fines, prosecutions and product seizures were being tracked properly as cases continue to crop up in the media but didn’t seem to translate to the FOI feedback.

He also asked whether there were regional teams specifically tackling illicit vape trade or whether forces were spread across other age restricted areas like alcohol as well and suggested it might be time for a more focused approach.

In a new bid to curb youth access policymakers last week announced they will be ‘closing a loophole’

that allows the supply of free vaping samples to minors.

The government also said there will be a review into banning the sale of nicotine-free vapes to under-18s.

Though these developments were warmly welcomed by the sector as yet more ways to shield young people from unscrupulous sellers, industry leaders said we ‘must not’ forget about the areas of enforcement that seem to be falling by the wayside.

John Dunne, Director General of the UKVIA, said: “Closing loopholes and introducing balanced policies are important steps.

“But they will ultimately prove inconsequential if we fail to enforce the existing fundamental laws on illegal products and youth access.

“Although prosecutions and penalties are very much key weapons in our arsenal against cowboy sellers, they mean very little if Trading Standards don’t have the resources to pursue them – the government must take this new data very seriously.”

Vapouround editor Oliver Smith takes a look back on a night of success and celebration at our eighth annual awards show.

Words: Oliver Smith

76 l VM44 FEATURE

After all the hard work for months on end, the vaping industry once again headed to the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham for our eighth annual Vapouround Global Awards.

Before the night, I believed it would be impossible to top last year’s unbelievable event…but I am happy to report that the night proved me very wrong.

As always, the dedicated Vapouround team came together to put on a truly brilliant show in the birth city of our glamourous awards, again showing why brands travel across the global to attend our event.

Being back amongst the crowds for this prestigious night, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride as I wandered through the buzzing room of hopeful nominees.

I was glad to see so many familiar faces lining the room, from the advocacy champion John Dunne to the ever-vibrant vaping personality of Johnnie Lovell, as well as exiting brands like Dr. Vapes, FEELM and Vaporesso.

It was also a privilege to have some newer names in the crowds, giving me the confidence that the next generation of brands and industry personalities are better equipped to carry the harm reduction message forward.

VM44 l 77

From the very beginning of the night, the Vapouround Awards promised two things…a place to honour the leading lights of the industry and an evening of spectacular entertainment.

From the familiar-faced hosts, the fun photo booth, and a DJ playing all the biggest hits, I must say I was thoroughly entertained.

But the highlight for me and for most people in attendance was the LED dance troop, that performed one of their eye-catching displays during the awards.

I could hardly turn my attention away as the group strutted their stuff along the massive catwalk stage in the hall.

Between the delicious menu, unbeatable entertainment and the unique atmosphere, we also had 36 awards up for grabs.

With a lot of focus going into hailing industry leaders, a few of our newest and

favourite awards that were won were the Global Achievement Award, Best Sustainable Initiative and the Outstanding Contribution to the Vape Industry.

The Vapouorund Global Awards winners represent the best and brightest of our industry…the brands and personalities that drive our continued success on the world stage and push us ever closer to a smokefree future.

Without their passion, the harm reduction message may well have drowned under the mainstream media’s hit pieces and baseless attacks on our industry.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors, advertisers, judges, awards entrants, attendees and the whole of the Vapouround team which pulled together to make this our best event to date.

EURO-VER- reacting

AN UPDATED COUNTRY-TO-COUNTRY GUIDE ON THE CURRENT BANS AND RESTRICTIONS ACROSS EUROPE.

Words: Grace Lynk
VM44 l 97 FEATURE

Recent vaping bans being passed in countries all over the world might have a few people worried about potential changes to vape laws across the European Union and the UK.

At current, the rules in Europe remain flexible, however with potential vaping bans proposed by The European Commission (EC) coming into effect later in the year, tensions are high.

While the directive came into force in November 2022 in a bid to curb a ten percent rise in sales among flavoured products, EU member states have until July of 2023 to incorporate the restrictions into national legislation.

The ban itself will be applicable from October of this year, and with harsher restrictions being implemented across the continent, here is a run-through of current laws on a country-to-country basis.

Turkey:

Turkey was one of the first countries to ban the importation of e-cigarettes due to a general lack of information about safety back in the early months of 2020.

As such, there are still no devices or refills licensed for sale in the bordering peninsula, but it remains legal to vape if the device is brought into the country for personal use.

Bulgaria:

The Southern European country of Bulgaria have always taken a relatively liberal approach to vaping, with very few restrictions regarding vaping indoors and buying products for domestic use.

However, cross-border selling is still banned, as well as the sale of vaping devices in schools, hospitals and dormitories being prohibited or highly restricted in most areas.

Norway:

Although vaping is technically legal in the sovereign nation of Norway, nicotine content is not, leaving the only e-liquids available those with 0mg unless imported for private and personal medical use.

Vapes are subject to the same restrictions as cigarettes in Norway, meaning it is difficult to use vaping as a replacement or cessation tool in any areas where tobacco is banned.

98 l VM44 FEATURE

Germany:

There are currently minimal restrictions regarding vaping in Germany, with only the State of Hessen having a specific vaping and smoking ban implemented everywhere.

However, following a call for a ban across Europe, the German Bundesrat is now urging the federal government to consider a ban on disposables across all of Germany.

Portugal:

Portugal is one of many European countries that have instigated a ban on vaping in public places, with signs littered across the country to remind

Belgium:

Vaping products in Belgium are currently considered medicinal products, unlike most other countries that put vapes in the same category as cigarettes and other tobacco-related products.

However, vapes will no longer be exclusively sold by pharmacists following a transposition of the TPD at a national level, meaning retailers will have access to medical licenses in order to sell.

Sweden:

A new legislation restricting the use and sale of all tobacco products has also recently been announced in hopes that e-cigarettes will only be available in tobacconists and airports by 2025.

Sweden is on course to reach a historic milestone of becoming the first ‘smokefree’ country in Europe, with their tobacco smoking figures on target to drop below five percent.

They have done this by combining tobacco control methods with harm minimisation strategies, with many authors crediting vaping as an essential quitting tool for smokers in a bid to save lives.

“ULTIMATELY, OUR AMBITION IS TO BE THE GO-TO BRAND AND PREFERRED CHOICE FOR ADULT CONSUMERS IN THE MARKET.”

What is WAKA and RELX hoping to achieve next in UK? What are your ambitions?

“We’re thrilled to have won at this year’s Vapouround Awards, especially for our new premium WAKA devices.

We constantly strive to offer our adult customers an elevated experience and state-of-the-art products using design and ethical innovation. Winning against such prestigious competition is a testament to that.

Looking ahead, our goal by the end of 2023 is to become one of the most trusted and prominent vape companies in the UK.

Ultimately, our ambition is to be the go-to brand and preferred choice for adult consumers in the market.

We’re set to achieve this by furthering our commitment to exceptional products, innovative experiences and outstanding customer service.”

How do you market products in different countries and what was the key change for the UK market?

“At RELX, we tailor our marketing strategy to fall in line with the unique cultural, social and economic factors at play within the varying markets in which we operate.

Through extensive market research we establish the preferences, needs and behaviours of consumers in different countries, allowing us to develop products and device flavours that resonate with a range of adult audiences.

We understand the unique requirements of adult consumers in the UK and work to ensure our products align with and exceed their expectations.

We maintain this commitment by continuing to invest in targeted research and development, with a focus on cutting-edge technologies that deliver high-quality products.

Our Guardian Program puts us at the forefront of youth prevention, ensuring we do everything possible to appeal solely to adults, to prevent and discourage the misuse of vape products by minors.”

When you refer to ‘life changing’ is this in relation to assisting existing adult smokers make the transition to next gen?

“Experts universally agree that vaping is considerably less harmful than smoking. Smoking exposes users to vast amounts of toxins at higher levels than e-cigarettes.

Recently, we carried out UK-based research that found nearly nine in ten (88 percent) adults are pleased to have transitioned away from combustible cigarettes, while 87 percent would recommend making the switch.

In line with these findings, we continue to highlight vaping as a direct and responsible way of helping existing adult smokers to stop using cigarettes in favour of a less harmful next-generation alternative.”

WAKA’s design claims to be ‘individual’ and ‘mould breaking’, what was the thought process behind the creation of the products?

“Our thought process behind WAKA was to provide a superior vaping alternative to what’s already available in the market, elevating our designs to be slick and minimalistic and therefore user-friendly.

Through cutting-edge technology, premium design and big, bold flavour combinations, we are confident that the product achieves our goals.”

In what ways have you adapted to allow for technological advancements within the industry?

“Whether it’s harnessing the synergy of dual mesh coils to double the cloud size and flavour or creating transparent e-liquid tanks, we are constantly looking at ways to advance our products.

“Our innovative product line-up includes the groundbreaking Mesh Coil 2.0, DUALMESH, the Feelm Max and Vcot technologies.

“These advancements have allowed us to elevate the vaping experience and achieve a richer, more flavourful taste while minimizing e-liquid wastage.”

MICHAEL REDFEARN, DELAWARE, USA

Being almost 10 years smokefree – after quitting at 30 years old –Michael is now able to say that his youngest child has never seen him light a cigarette.

His main motivation when making the all-important decision to quit was to have more moments with his children, as regular cigarette breaks were taking up the majority of his free time.

Not to mention, he was also concerned about the impact smoking had on his health’ but he’s pleased to be able to say that years later, his eldest two children don’t really remember the days of him lighting up.

Michael admits that he doesn’t think he could have achieved this alone, his journey was made that little bit easier by having his wife as a quitting buddy.

He said: “I don’t think I could’ve done it alone and I don’t think I could’ve done it without vaping.

“I feel that vaping is breaking a generational smoking habit - that’s on both sides of the family.”

One time, when his eldest child was a lot younger, he said he wanted to grow up and smoke cigarettes just like his Dad…this was the ultimate wake up call for Michael. The most drastic difference he’s seen in his life is the amount of time he has to be a present father

for his kids.

Michael said: “I no longer missed out on the small special moments because I was outside smoking. “Also, the financial savings have helped immensely in raising a family in the modern world.”

TOBY GREEN, MANCHESTER, UK

It wasn’t until his son was three and a half years old that Toby – a father of one – decided to quit smoking after his recreational use of cigarettes over the years.

The realisation came washing over him one night as he was putting his son to bed, counting down the minutes it would take him to falling asleep in order to go out for a smoke.

His son never mentioned it to him, but the guilt still remained each time Toby would come back from his cigarette breaks and felt himself pulling away from his child.

He said: “I was constantly wary about kissing or cuddling him when I’d been smoking and I didn’t like how it was beginning to interfere with our relationship.” Since making the life changing switch, Toby is able to focus more on spending intimate, quality time with his son and cherish those moments completely cigarettefree.

He no longer has concerns about the smell of smoke on his clothes or his hands when holding his son and doesn’t find himself in a hurry to go for his next cigarette.

Toby said: “Vaping has made the transition a whole lot easier and allowed me to feel more confident in quitting nicotine altogether, hopefully in the near future.”

NICHOLAS ORLANDO, FLORIDA, USA

It was close to two years into fatherhood that Nicholas make the big switch from cigarettes and found vaping was the only successful cessation tool for him. It truly hit home for the father when his child came to him to say that they ‘didn’t want him to die from smoking’, which of course, was difficult to hear for Nicholas.

The biggest transformation he found in his smoke-free fatherhood was being able to partake in his children’s active lifestyle, going on to coach a soccer team for an impressive 19 years.

Vaping played a vital role in allowing him to quit the deadly habit and be the best parent he could be.

After making the switch in order to be a more active father and put his health first, Nicholas was in awe of the power vaping could have on transforming people’s lives.

He said: “I was inspired by what it has done for me and thousands of others and so I have volunteered as the Vice President of the Florida Smokefree Association since 2014.”

I FEEL THAT VAPING IS BREAKING A GENERATIONAL SMOKING HABIT

JOURDAN WHEELER, ARIZONA, U.S

Jourdan was saved from a lifetime of smoking related issues with the help of reduced risk nicotine products.

After making the switch in 2009, he met his wife who had two children from her previous relationship both aged just two and four years old. He went in to buy his usual pack of cigarettes and the lady there was using an e-cigarette, after learning the facts from her, he bought one and never smoked again.

Jourdan said: “Now I didn’t quit because I was going to become a father but I sure am glad I did. I am able to keep up with my kids, and also live longer to share life with them.”

Having lost both his stepdad and mother to lung cancer – caused by excessive cigarette use – Jourdan felt as though smoking stole many years not just from him, but his children.

After smoking from the ages of 11 to age 29 it got to the point where the father of two was out of breath doing routine things like walking up the stairs.

He said: “I was dying inside and poisoning my body and unable to quit regardless of the resources that were offered.”

The second ever MENA Vape Awards was held in Dubai on Wednesday June 21 and was jointly presented by Vapouround and Vape Paper.

Words: Oliver Smith

110 l VM44 FEATURE

It was only a few weeks ago that the team and I were hosting the eight annual Vapouround Global Awards live from the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

As you can imagine, staging an event as big as that takes months of organisation and planning.

So, when we scheduled the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) Vape Awards only a few weeks after, we knew we had a

industry being in one place at one time.

Although, with a short time frame, and the fact that the awards would be taking place more than 4,000 miles away added just a small amount of pressure to the team.

In fact, all in all, I think even Ethan Hunt would have had his work cut out to pull it off successfully.

‘Mission Impossible’ are two words that our extremely capable team don’t seem to understand.

VM44 l 111
112 l VM44 FEATURE

I must give massive props to the Vapouround team as well as the Vape Paper team in Dubai, working together harmoniously for a truly memorable event.

After planning awards for the past eight years, each one just keeps on getting better and better, setting us up with the experience to improve every year.

We have a successful blueprint on how things are done, which we try to improve upon each year so that the results are always clear to see.

However, the MENA Vape Awards tore up the blueprint and we did things completely differently.

The venue was on a whole new level, choosing ‘The Theater’ situated in Dubai’s Fairmont hotel.

Although it was a challenge to stage this awards evening, the venue was very accommodating and very professional.

All the hospitality staff worked extremely hard and were incredibly friendly, with many not

even asking for a drink before a fresh one was presented right to them.

The entertainment was outstanding. With a variety of dance, singing and performance acts hitting the stage to wow the vaping crowds.

The acrobats and dancers were performing throughout the night with it culminating in the Greatest Show, from The Greatest Showman.

The entertainment was a huge hit with everyone. Being in The Theater meant that they had stateof-the-art sound, light and visuals which were used to the acts advantage.

VM44 l 113
114 l VM44 FEATURE

Rather than the formal sit down three course meal, it was done as more of a sharing platter, with loads of small bites coming out frequently so no one went away with an empty stomach.

With free drinks all night for whoever wanted to let their hair down, the night was flowing and everyone was enjoying a fantastic experience.

From this point, the awards evening seamlessly went into an after party at the same venue, with more singers and dance acts, followed by a DJ playing all the hits until 3am.

Of course, the night wasn’t only a place for some good food and drink, the awards evening was also there to celebrate the many wins for the industry, especially in this region.

For me, some that really stuck out to me were Instafill winning ‘Best Innovation’, Dr Vapes’

‘Outstanding Contribution to the Vape Industry’ and of course the Geek Bar going into the Vapouround ‘Hall of Fame’.

I can’t wait for the third instalment of the MENA awards next year, with the bar being set extremely high, I am excited to see the heights we can reach to hail the blossoming vape industry in this beautiful region of the world.

MEET THE BUYER EVENT, MAY 2-3, UK

Words: Oliver Smith

The team at World Vape Show raised a lot of intrigue when they first announced the new business to business event Meet the Buyer.

Housed at the picturesque Belfry Hotel and Golf Resort, the venue was the perfect melting pot for the vaping industry to do business.

It was an event full of connecting, networking and meeting possible new clients for all the visitors.

The day was structured with various tables scattered around the main function room, suppliers and buyers, with a short time to chat and interact on each table… giving it a ‘speed dating-like’ style.

There was a massive sense of excitement in the air on the morning when the doors to the golf resort opened.

I noticed a real buzz in the venue, with lots of new and old faces that I was able to reconnect with after some time apart.

Each buyer and supplier a chance to present their brand in the best light possible.

With Brett Heaps, Eco Vape hailing the success of the ‘speed dating’, saying: “The innovative concept of speed dating for business was nothing short of brilliant.

“Allowing for dynamic interactions with suppliers and buyers from various sectors where vape sales have been skyrocketing.”

Overall feedback at this early stage from onsite and immediately after was really positive and the WVS team are extremely happy with how it went.

The speed dating format worked very well, giving

EGYPT VAPE EXPO, MAY 4-6, CAIRO

From

grey skies and non-stop rain to all-day sun and a backdrop of dreams, the much-anticipated Egypt Vape Expo welcomed both businesses and consumers with open arms.

This event marked the first licensed vape show in the Egyptian market and attracted many eager onlookers from around the world. It was also remarkable to see first-hand the market’s recent growth.

The three-day event held at the Cairo International Convention Centre showcased a wealth of planning and dedication as thousands of excited guests meandered through the many custom-built booths.

There was certainly no lack of surprises as the first day came to an end with a truly breath-taking private

awards dinner hosted in front of the pyramids – a world first.

Conversations flowed with ease alongside incredible food and a pleather of rich entertainment that kept the guests in awe.

It was an amazing evening to connect further with those attending the expo in a more intimate setting.

Day two kept us just as busy as we spoke to many bright-eyed consumers discovering all the event had to offer. With some 15,000 tickets sold, it was an impressive turn out.

Come the final day, crowds gathered around the main stage in anticipation to receive awards gifted to expeditors in recognition of participating in the country’s first e-cigarette event.

As the expo came to an end and the crowds began to disperse, Egypt left us feeling excited and intrigued for the future.

HALL OF VAPE, MAY 6-7, GERMANY

This was my first time stepping onto German soil and it is fair to say I was pleasantly surprised by the city of Stuttgart’s charm.

As a newbie I have to admit, my expectations were exceeded as I walked through the doors of Hall of Vape and saw the immense detail that goes into each brand’s booth.

From plants to caged walls, LED Light fixtures and even a vaping mascot –the ‘big boys’ of the vaping industry – Elf Bar, Voopoo, Lost Mary and moredidn’t come to play.

There were plenty of opportunities to network with people from across the globe and it was heartwarming to see an assemble of vapers in matching t-shirts, joining forces for the weekend.

Many German Vapers were starstruck to see famous faces within the community like ‘GrimmGreen’ and

the ‘Vaping Bogan’ in attendance along with plenty of twitch streamers, filming each exciting second.

The stage hosted a wide range of talks and performances over the course of the two-day event, from doctors to rappers - it was evident that they knew how to draw a crowd.

Aside from the stage, there was constant music booming and creating a lively atmosphere as the vapour continued to rise and form a giant cloud floating above us.

My eyes lit up at the sight of recycling points for vapes dotted across the venue and in this current climate, it’s fantastic to see the event setting an example for other exhibitions.

The highlight of the weekend was for sure getting to see the faces behind the brands that we work alongside and introducing those also new to the industry what Vapouround has to offer.

The three-day event has always been structured with business-to-business networking on the Friday, the second day, is open to the general public with more of a focus on products and of course ‘Sunday Funday’.

The expo floor was a fun and lively environment, with many familiar brands and faces popping up as I walked the room.

It was great to chat to a vast number of my clients as well as finally putting a face to a name on a few that I had not met before.

Hearing many stories regarding current draconian

laws in various countries as well as hearing the damming events of the customs seizures over at the Hall of Vape expo.

As with every year at The Vaper Expo UK, the hall was filled with the pandemonium of what was going on at the main stage.

With organisers and of course the vaping personality of Johnnie Lovell all on stage throwing disposables, clothing and other bits of swag into the massive crowds.

I must say that I cannot wait for next year’s Vaper Expo UK, I already know the organisers will be planning something truly special.

ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS EXPO, MAY 21-22, COLOMBIA

During its two vibrant days, Alternative Products Expo transformed Medellin’s Plaza Mayor convention centre into a unique celebration of counterculture products and their industry.

Over 15,000 people got a taste of the best vaping, hemp, and alternative products on the market. The event provided vendors with a platform to showcase their products and a valuable opportunity to establish strategic alliances with brands and industry buyers from across Latin America. Distributors and store owners from all over the region flew to the event to secure the latest and trendiest products to gain a competitive edge in their home markets.

Plaza Mayor also served as the home of Bizcann Expo - ZJ Events’ second event centred around LATAM’s booming cannabis industry.

With over 30 different industry thought leaders, Bizcann offered attendees the latest insights and services for those wanting to expand their cannabis venture into Latin America.

As the curtains fell, vendor’s booths were sold out, and attendees were still vibing to the music and energy from the event. It goes without saying that the event was a success.

Alternative Products Expo is already looking forward to its Medellin 2024 edition, setting its sights on an even bigger event than this year.

ENDS 2023 CONFERENCE, MAY 23-24, AMSTERDAM

The ENDS Conference in Amsterdam was two days of debates and discussions centred around some of the most important topics currently facing the industry.

Topics included regulation and taxation, the impact of flavour bans, the potential impact of the forthcoming FCTC COP 10 in Panama and how to dispose of disposable vapes.

It was chaired by Arcus Compliance Managing Director Robert Sidebottom and featured some of the industry’s most influential experts and speakers from around the world.

UKVIA Director General John Dunne said the argument that only children liked vape flavours was ‘quite preposterous’ and said there was no place in the vaping industry for companies who used cartoon characters in their products.

He said Trading Standards departments were ‘woefully under-resourced’ to adequately enforce vape regulations and Robert Sidebottom highlighted the ‘ridiculously low’ number of prosecutions and fines for vape retailers who broke the law.

The Arcus Compliance MD said the entrepreneurial and scientific elements of the vaping industry could ‘achieve greater things by working closer together’ and highlighted the ‘desperate need’ for high quality research data.

Other standout topics included Jeannie Cameron, CEO of JCIC International, explaining why COP10 could be ‘make or break’ for the global nicotine market and World Vapers’ Alliance Director Michael Landl arguing why flavours matter and why prohibition never works.

It was great to hear the ‘reasons to be cheerful’ segment from Tom Gleeson, Trustee, NNA Ireland who told the conference: “There are 87 million people who vape worldwide and nine million of those are in countries with full vape bans so it is clear that the demand for a safer alternative to smoking is overwhelming.”

Well said Tom. We couldn’t agree more.

VAPITALY, MAY 27-29, ITALY

In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. A pair of star-crossed vape companies prepare for a weekend of sun, amazing food, and good old-fashioned business.

Vapitaly was set in a large, buzzing hall that had attracted a large turnout of brands and consumers in attendance, making it a wonderful setting to meet clients and network.

Day two was particularly busy, which was fantastic to witness and be a part of. A constant buzz of interested crowds surrounded the booths from every direction.

There was a good mix of smaller, local companies alongside the big boys like Kiwi, Elfbar, Vaporesso, Moti and Upends.

Vapeitaly was a very well organised show with great communication from the teams with regards to the booths and the day-to-day game plan. There was a decent mixture of information and conference-style talks as well as giveaways on the

main stage. There was also an outdoor conference and livestream truck.

Verona itself is a beautiful place and cultural spectacles to behold - including lovely little squares, Roman arenas, and the famous Juliet’s Balcony. The weather was amazing, and the Italian food definitely lived up to its expectation of being some of the best in the world.

All in all, they put on a great show in an amazing setting and I really look forward to coming back next year.

VAPEXPO, JUNE 3-4, SPAIN

I couldn’t think of a better way to start of the month of June, and it was an absolute pleasure to fly out to Madrid to be media partners again for Vapexpo Madrid.

Across the two-day event, we were greeted by an array of new people and a vast number of Spanish brands as well as current clients like Just Juice, Geekvape, Monster Vape Labs and many more.

The show itself was perfectly organised with lots of stage activities, bright lights and big, vibrant booths – it was certainly one of my favourite shows I’ve been to this year.

There was a huge presence from public visitors and lots of industry professionals alongside a wide range of products and we even tried a few new juices during our stay.

We’ve always loved being part of the Vapexpo shows and we’re already counting down until the next one!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Ready for another tour of the country, the Vapouround Bus hit the road yet again on its mission to help more smokers make the life-changing switch to vaping.

Words: Hannah Rhodes

Newark market may 19

With a warm spring breeze in the air, the Project Vapouround team took to the streets of Newark for a day packed with engaging conversations with fellow vapers and current smokers.

Eager crowds from all walks of life gathered outside of the Vapouround Bus for a friendly chat and to learn more about a less harmful alternative.

That morning, a hesitant woman approached the bus explaining that she had smoked most of her life and was surprised to learn of a new way to help her quit.

She said previous methods had only helped with the addictive side of smoking but not the habit itself and so found vaping to be a step in the right direction.

With a new vape device in hand and knowledge on how to curb her lifelong habit, she left feeling excited and hopeful to start towards a new journey. A few hours later, the same lady returned grinning from ear-to-ear to tell us that since using the device she had more than halved her tobacco consumption and felt optimistic for the future.

As the day came to an end, we said goodbye to the cobbled streets of Newark with a sense of accomplishment in providing advice to those looking to quit smoking.

Stoke- ontrent 8 june

This was one of my first trips on the Project Vapouround bus tour, so I would be lying to say I wasn’t the tiniest bit apprehensive.

We had an incredible day to start off our June tour as Project Vapouround headed into Stoke-on-Trent.

It started off as a dull and cloudy day but as the sun started peeking through the clouds, so did the crowds, as we introduced our mobile education hub to the locals. People from all walks of life left happy and smiling as our motto for the day went ‘you’ll definitely leave with something’, and ‘it’s completely free’ definitely was our visitors favourite part.

Some heart warming highlights of the day was firstly, a deaf lady that was so eager to join in on the fun and definitely got involved on all aspects as our team took care of her needs. The next was a blind lad and he’s pup that once again reciprocated happiness and gratitude we were putting out to all our visitors throughout the day.

Overall, it was a great day out and we can’t wait to get back out, educating people and being part of lifestyle change. I am really looking forward to see where we are heading next, helping out many more smokers on the start to their quitting journey.

Matlock food AND drink festival June 12

SHIPLEY PARK FOOD FESTIVAL June 17-18

After a truly scenic journey through the town, Project Vapouround pulled into Matlock Food and Drink Festival for an incredible day out.

It was definitely a suns-out-vapes-out kind of day as the community thoroughly enjoyed our muchanticipated arrival.

Groups of people brough their friends with two goals in mind; firstly, to get free vapes of course and secondly walk away with valuable knowledge on how to effectively make the switch.

We had a great time encouraging smokers to make the switch and were pleasantly welcomed with a few people putting their cigarettes out to grab a vape instead.

Our Vapouround summer tour has been epic so far and we can’t wait for our next event so be sure to keep an eye on our socials for more details.

As summer quickly approaches, the Project Vapouround team pitched up to enjoy a two-day event full of amazing food and live music at Shipley Country Park’s Food Festival.

On the first day, we spoke to a lovely lady who had found vapes to be a great way to transition after recently starting her quitting journey.

She told us that despite trying multiple options recommended by her doctor and peers – such as patches and gum – she had struggled with finding a way to aid in the physical habit of smoking.

Having only tried vaping devices for a short period of time, she left the Vapouround Bus feeling proud in what she had already achieved and optimistic for her future.

Day two saw even more interest from the crowds as we welcomed people to try out our exciting flavour competition.

Not only did this allow people to win exclusive prizes, it also presented the opportunity for fellow vapers and current smokers to try multiple flavours – with many finding new personal favourites.

As the weekend drew to an end, the skies opened up and it was time to bid farewell following an educational and fun-packed time with Project Vapouround.

Kiwi Passion Guava

Each pull produced a delightfully sweet yet crisp fruitiness without leaving a sickly aftertaste like some of the other variants I have tried.

This flavour takes me back to a beach-vibe and is a perfect for the upcoming summer months.

Out of the three flavour profiles, the guava comes across as being more dominant in both the inhale and exhale –however, this didn’t come across as overwhelming but quite the opposite.

Sour Raspberry

This is almost a palette cleanser which I particularly enjoyed after some of the sweet and creamier flavours from ANDS.

There’s a definite if subtle sour flavour at the back of the nose on exhalation which is refreshing.

Nice enough flavour, but not my favourite...but that’s just my opinion.

Pink Lemon

I have purchased this flavour from elsewhere before so I have no doubt it’ll be exactly the same.

The flavouring is nice and smooth but it hasn’t got a similar taste to pink lemonade, it’s more sour than sweet but still amazing taste and product in itself.

Mint

With a very distinct taste, this disposable hit the exact spot

156 l VM44
REVIEWS

for a strong mint flavour without an overbearing sweetness like other mint devices.

The vape provided a great cooling sensation to the throat as it was not overbearing and had a subtle hint to it.

The aftertaste of the vape was incredible as it was such a smooth pull and left a distinct mint flavour in your throat.

Cream Tobacco

I was slightly apprehensive when first trying this flavour, as I have never been the one to choose a tobacco styled taste.

I must say, this flavour was the perfect mix of providing that tobacco-like flavour for ex-smokers to enjoy but with a subtle sweetness of a creamy caramel toffee.

Grape

I have had this flavour in other brands and found them a bit hit and miss so was wary to try this flavour from ANDS.

I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the taste, with a good grape flavour without being too sweet and sickly.

I normally find these grape flavours usually lose their taste towards the end, but this kept up right until the last puff.

Watermelon

One of my favourite flavours is Watermelon, and all I can say is that this disposable from ANDS definitely didn’t disappoint.

Although no brand has ever replicated the true taste of a watermelon, I have loved the artificial flavour that you normally find with chewy sweets.

From the first to the last puff, I enjoyed the mouthwateringly sweet taste that was so moreish that when the device’s life ended, I was very upset.

Blue Raspberry Lemon

This was a brilliant blueberry flavour, usually hard to pull off but ANDS has definitely succeeded.

Alongside the lemonade flavour the overall experience develops with a large hit of blueberry which fades slowly, giving way to the citrusy lemonade which accompanies the flavour nicely.

Geekvape Wenax Q Kit

I always get excited when it comes to sampling the newest bits of tech, and would say pod devices are kind of my forte.

Over the years, I have gravitated away from sub ohm vaping (in general) and like many within the industry, have moved on to something a little more discreet and convenient.

The Wenax Q from GeekVape is the perfect example of a pod kit, and the way it performs epitomises the very definition of compact and practical. Its user oriented design provides vapers with a powerful and easy to use set up, working best with thinner (50/50 VG/PG) e-liquids, the Wenax Q can also handle high strength nicotine with absolute ease. Typical of many pod systems currently on the market right now, the Wenax Q kit has a slender, bar-shaped body, featuring a small HD OLED display screen, indicating wattage, a battery bar and a puff counter. Before the advent of disposables, I kind of thought that puff counters were somewhat arbitrary, a gimmick of sorts. However, this has changed for me - and just out of pure curiosity, I like to keep track of my puffs, and compare my vaping pattern over the course of the day/week. The exterior is sleek and streamlined, and it features a tiny (but sufficient) display screen, on which battery life is easily recognised. Packing an impressive, integrated 1000mAh battery, this device lasted most of a day of moderate to heavy usage - and that’s even running on an average wattage of approximately 19W. Speaking of watts, the Wenax Q runs anywhere between 5-25W, and can be adjusted by pressing the ‘fire’ button three times in quick succession. You’re going to want to adjust this to your preference depending on what resistance coil you choose. Supplied with the kit, you will find two refillable pods, they have a TRPR compliant 2ml capacity, and I found myself refilling once or twice a day. Filling a pod is super simple, removing the top part of the pod itself will reveal a little one way valve, reducing the instance of overfilling/leakages. The Wenax Q eliminates the need to swap out old coils by enlisting the use of pods with built in coils, making it handy and convenient, simply discard the pod in it’s entirety once the coil has burnt out. Some vapers, however, prefer replaceable coils, so that’s one thing to bear in mind. Each pod has a different resistance - one being 0.6ohm and the other 1.2ohm. Now, I’m going to have a bit of a closer look at how the two resistances held up, and in order to keep things as fair as possible, I decided to try the same exact e-liquid - but one being 20mg nicotine salts and the other being 10mg nicotine salts. For the 1.2ohm coil, 20mg salts provided a smooth and flavourful inhale, and for me, the nicotine hit was not too intense. The 0.6ohm coil and 10mg salts, on the other hand, boasts a warm puff and a powerful

SPECIFICATIONS

Pod Capacity: 2ml

Battery Capacity: 1000mAh

throat hit. I feel like the opportunity to choose between coils is a definite plus, as it caters for a much wider audience, especially for smokers looking to quit. The coil longevity for both was about average and will last up to roughly a week or so - all depending on a multitude of individual factors. Over the course of my trialling, I found that I used the 0.6ohm pod most often as I liked the immediate throat hit. Both pods, however, produced a relatively small amount of vapour, giving an added layer of discreetness. To further customise your experience, the Wenax Q also procures the use of adjustable airflow, ranging from a tight MTL (mouth to lung), up to an RDTL (restricted direct to lung). Durability is another massive aspect of this kit, and with its surprisingly hefty weight and strong exterior, normal knocks and drops shouldn’t be too much of an issue. I really liked the way this kit performs, and its user friendly nature will be recognised especially so from the point of view of a new vaper/ex smoker. It is easy to operate, allows users to choose any flavour as well as high nicotine strengths to aide smokers in the initial stages of quitting. In comparison to the majority of other pod systems I have tried so far, the Wenax Q held up remarkably well and deserves a place in any new vaper’s arsenal.

PROS

- Easy to use

- Built in coils reduce the chances of leakages and condensation build up

FeelMMax Disposables

Showcasing the immensely impressive and innovative ceramic coil, produced by industry leaders, FEELM, you can safely say that flavour and performance are at the very core of these disposables.

SPECIFICATIONS

Cartridge Capacity: 2ml

Nicotine Strength: 2%

Battery Capacity: 400 mAh

Designed to perfectly diffuse vapour evenly when inhaling, the flavour was exceedingly smooth and long lasting, with almost no flavour dissipation over time. I felt that the whole experience was seamless and, quite frankly, deeply enjoyable.

Kyoho Grape

Enthralling from the get go, the vibrant and bold notes of grape seemed to conquer my taste buds. It was bright and emanated a strong candylike texture, and still managed to come across as smooth and inviting. For me, grape flavours can often be hit or miss, and it is my personal belief that this disposable is certainly a hit. With just a touch of iciness when vaping, the level of refreshment that this device offers is both satisfying and easy to enjoy. Thanks to the added dash of coldness, it remained fresh and I didn’t feel like it became dull or overly sweet, even after sustained periods of time.

Lemon Lime

An opulent mixture of sharp citrus fruits, this disposable has been designed to impress fans of powerful flavours, with an unmatched effervescence. The rather simple combination of lemon and lime has been around for quite a while now within the vape industry, and with this example, it’s easy to see why. Perfectly implemented, the ratio between the two gives a well balanced and straightforward taste. As with the previous flavour, there was a minute, carefully proportioned amount of iciness, increasing the brightness of an already electrifying set of fruity notes. I felt that despite the rather basic selection of flavour components, that simplicity worked in favour of this disposable and made it pleasant to vape.

Berry Ice

Another somewhat common flavour profile doing the rounds right now, ‘Berry Ice’ offers vapers a delicious and reliable vaping experience. It manages to incorporate all of the hallmarks of a decent berry based flavour - sweetness, sourness and vibrancy. The rich selection of summer berries offers a striking and solid base that is both flavourful and almost interactive. As a vaper, you will be able to appreciate the precise balance between soft sweetness and a tongue tingling wave of sourness, all whilst enjoying a true summertime vape. Unlike the previous two disposables, there was a hefty undertone of cooling agent that was intense, sharp and invigorating. With the vast presence of iciness, I personally felt that it made the berry notes a little more subdued, but that did not change the fact that I enjoyed this disposable immensely.

Geekvape Sonder Q Kit

SPECIFICATIONS

Pod Capacity: 2ml

Battery Capacity: 1000mAh

Charging: USB C

with your kit on a daily basis.

With no way to adjust your watts manually, the Sonder Q uses a smart wattage feature, allowing the device itself to recognise the resistance of the pod and subsequently pick an ideal wattage output for that resistance.

In that respect, new vapers will find this lack of complexity to work to their benefit - ease of use is at the heart of the Sonder Q.

Using cross compatible Q series pods, Geekvape has made it even more straightforward to fill - simply remove the top part of the pod (I find it easier to ‘snap’ it off rather than trying to pull it apart), and fill via a one way gasket.

Thanks to the largely transparent material, it is extremely effortless when it comes to finding out how full of e-liquid your pod is.

The pod that is supplied alongside this kit is practical in the fact that it has an inbuilt coil, eliminating the need to fumble about with fiddly coil replacements.

Once your coil has burnt out or has significantly lost taste, simply dispose of the whole pod.

I have been using the 0.8ohm pod that came with the device and have decided to try out a 20mg e-liquid with it. The draw activated inhale was velvety smooth, with a nice warmth and impressive throat hit.

Words: Peach Atkinson

Stripping back to bare basics, the Sonder Q kit is about as simple as it gets - and note that in this case, simplicity is most certainly key.

Remarkably similar to the Wenax Q kit that I also got the chance to review, the Sonder Q appears a little more straightforward both in design and functionality. Size wise, the Sonder has that familiar ‘bar’ shape, and unlike the Wenax, this kit does away with buttons or screens. Its streamlined exterior is lined with a heavy duty plastic frame, and has a surprisingly light weight. It comes in plenty of different colour options too - adding a layer of individuality.

Concealed by the rather unassuming outside lies a fairly hefty 1000mAh battery that will last most of a days worth of heavy vaping.

With the obvious lack of a screen, battery life can be found by coloured LED lights hidden behind the logo on the side of the device itself.

Batteries are powered up incredibly quickly, thanks to a USB C port, meaning you can pretty much be on the go

I’d imagine the 0.8ohm pod should last anywhere between 7-10 days, depending on a number of factors including your choice of e-liquid or your average daily puffs, for example. With an adjustable airflow, you can cycle between a tight MTL and a somewhat loose RDTL, expanding to cater for your personal preference.

As I briefly touched on earlier, the Sonder Q has a robust build quality and performed excellently on my drop testwith no visible or functional damage.

Expected to be a very affordable kit, it can make a great choice for smokers looking to dip their toes into vaping without committing to an expensive setup.

In fact, the Sonder Q in its entirety has been designed with smokers in mind, it’s easy to use, performs well with high strength nicotine e-liquids, is reliable and doesn’t cost a bomb.

As an overall opinion (especially when compared to the similar Wenax Q kit), I really preferred the basic nature that the Sonder Q presented, whilst still being highly practical and impressive.

Pros

- One of the most simple and straightforward reusable kits I have tried

- Powerful throat hit when used with high strength nicotine

- None
