Before moving to Puerto Vallarta in 1999, the president and founder of one of the fastest growing real estate agencies in the city worked as an agent for Prudential Realty in Beverly Hills. By then, he already had several years of experience in the business and had a rising and prosperous career. In fact, his last sale in the wealthy California market was the largest transaction recorded that year: a residence acquired by artist and music producer Babyface. So, what made him move to Mexico?

The answer involves an opportunity, discovering a promising real estate sector and encountering a lifestyle that he defines as “inspiring.”

Timothy was born and raised in Salt Lake City and studied Public Relations and Communications at the University of Utah. This training has had a decisive impact on his career, as establishing connections, communicating effectively and making use of his knowledge in marketing are part of his day-to-day life in real estate.

He moved to Puerto Vallarta to become partner and manager of a real estate company, where he worked for 10 years. During that period, he learned the dynamics of the industry in this area and became involved with the local association of real estate professionals (AMPI), serving on its board repeatedly, currently as vice president.

Antes de mudarse a Puerto Vallarta en 1999, el presidente y fundador de una de las agencias inmobiliarias de más rápida expansión en la ciudad trabajaba como agente de la compañía Prudential Realty en Beverly Hills. Para entonces, contaba ya con varios años de experiencia dentro del negocio y tenía una carrera ascendente y próspera. De hecho, su última venta dentro del acaudalado mercado californiano fue la transacción más alta registrada ese año: una residencia adquirida por el artista y productor musical Babyface.

Entonces, ¿qué lo hizo cambiar de residencia a México? La respuesta engloba una oportunidad, el descubrimiento de un sector de bienes raíces prometedor y el encuentro con un estilo de vida que él mismo define como “inspirador”.

Carl nació y creció en Salt Lake City y estudió Relaciones Públicas y Comunicaciones en la Universidad de Utah. Esta formación ha marcado de manera decisiva su trayectoria, pues hacer conexiones, comunicarse efectivamente con las personas y hacer uso de sus conocimientos en mercadotecnia forman parte de su día a día desde que se inició en los bienes raíces.

Llegó a Puerto Vallarta para incursionar como socio y gerente de una compañía inmobiliaria dentro de la que trabajó durante diez años. En ese período, entendió la dinámica de la industria en esta zona y se involucró con la asociación local de profesionales inmobiliarios (AMPI), cuyo consejo ha integrado en repetidas ocasiones, siendo actualmente vicepresidente.

Following that stage, Timothy felt it was time to start his own project, so he founded Timothy Real Estate Group in 2010. Although it seemed a risky idea, the market showing the full effects of the economic crisis that emerged in 2008, Timothy saw the situation as an opportunity. “At that point, the sector’s activity could only rise,” he says. So, he established his office, gathered a team of professionals and developed a corporate philosophy that over the years has positioned his agency as one of the most successful.

“I have tried to foster a culture that revolves around effective relationships. Of course, we have the latest technology, marketing tools, statistics and market research, but what really makes a real estate transaction successful are the relationships that develop between individuals. Also, I strive to support my agents and workers, giving them the tools necessary to achieve their goals, both professionally and personally, because in a certain way we have formed a family.”

“Inspired Living,” the slogan he chose for his company, applies to his collaborators as well as clients and comes from his own experience living in our destination. “There are so many things to inspire you in this city, like the people who warmly welcome foreigners and the natural beauty. Moving to Puerto Vallarta has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life.”

Después de esa etapa, Timothy sintió que era el momento de emprender su propio proyecto, por lo que se independizó y fundó Timothy Real Estate Group en 2010. Aunque parecía una idea arriesgada debido a que el mercado mostraba de lleno los efectos de la crisis económica surgida en 2008, Carl veía el panorama como una oportunidad. “En ese punto, la actividad del sector únicamente puede subir”, se decía. De este modo, estableció su oficina, reunió un equipo de profesionales y desarrolló una filosofía corporativa que a lo largo de los años ha posicionado a su agencia como una de las más exitosas.

“He tratado de fomentar una cultura que gire en torno a las relaciones efectivas con las personas.

Por supuesto, tenemos la más alta tecnología, herramientas de marketing, estadísticas e investigación de mercado, pero lo que verdaderamente hace que una transacción inmobiliaria sea exitosa son las relaciones que se dan entre los individuos. Asimismo, me esfuerzo por apoyar a mis agentes y trabajadores, otorgándoles las herramientas necesarias para que logren sus objetivos tanto a nivel profesional como personal, pues de cierta manera hemos formado una familia”.

El eslogan que eligió para su empresa es “Inspired Living”, que intenta permear tanto a sus colaboradores como clientes y viene de su propia experiencia viviendo en nuestro destino. “Hay tantas cosas que te pueden inspirar en esta ciudad, como las personas que acogen cálidamente a los extranjeros y la belleza de los fenómenos naturales.

Mudarme a Puerto Vallarta ha sido una de las mejores decisiones que he tomado en mi vida”.

Thankful for the bonanza this city has given him, Timothy is clear that it is important to give back to the community. His company holds two important events every year. Along with the television program House Hunters International (with which they have established a very close collaboration), every year they hold the Vallarta Charity Event, which benefits various non-profit organizations. In addition, his team organizes the Vallarta Real Estate Fair, where those interested in acquiring a property in Banderas Bay can obtain useful information and advice.

A little-known facet of this entrepreneur, completely outside the area in which he works, is his participation in the singing group Vallarta Vocalista Ensemble, since he’s had voice training and considers himself fortunate to share this experience with other musicians and singers with shared tastes.

Other passions that nourish his life and that he shares with his partner, well-known Pilates instructor Marcelo Micó, are the practice of that discipline, travel, weekend boat trips and visits to his family in the United States. “We love breaking the routine and clearing the mind. In Mexico, one of our favorite places is Oaxaca. We have also been to Argentina. We often travel to Palm Springs, and we really enjoyed our time in a family cabin on Lake Utah, where we waterski.

As for the future of my company, I have been thinking about how we can grow without neglecting what has characterized us in these eight years. Perhaps we will soon see some innovation or expansion.”

Gracias a la bonanza que le ha dado esta ciudad, Timothy tiene claro que es importante retribuir a la comunidad. Su empresa celebra dos eventos importantes cada año. Junto al programa de televisión House Hunters International (con el que han establecido una colaboración muy cercana), cada año lleva a cabo el evento de recaudación Vallarta Charity Event, el cual beneficia a diversas organizaciones no lucrativas. Además, su equipo organiza la Vallarta Real Estate Fair, en donde los interesados en adquirir una propiedad en Bahía de Banderas pueden obtener información útil y asesoramiento.

Una faceta poco conocida del empresario y que es completamente ajena al área en la que labora, es su participación en el grupo de canto Vallarta Vocalista Ensemble, pues cuenta con entrenamiento vocal y se considera afortunado de compartir esta experiencia con otros músicos y cantantes con gustos afines.

Algunas pasiones más que nutren su vida y que comparte con su pareja, el conocido instructor de pilates Marcelo Micó, son la práctica de esta disciplina, los viajes, los paseos en barco durante el fin de semana y las visitas a su familia en Estados Unidos. “Nos encanta salir de la rutina y despejar la mente. En México, uno de nuestros lugares favoritos es Oaxaca. También hemos ido a Argentina, frecuentemente viajamos a Palm Springs y disfrutamos mucho el tiempo en una cabaña familiar en el Lago Utah, donde hacemos esquí acuático. En cuanto al futuro de mi empresa, he estado pensando de qué manera podemos crecer sin dejar de lado lo que nos ha caracterizado en estos ocho años, quizá pronto tenga alguna novedad o expansión”.

Gastronomy is one of Puerto Vallarta’s most outstanding pillars, with surprising restaurants that, in addition to offering exquisite menus to pamper foodies, have successfully remained on the scene due to the efforts their owners have made to keep them at the vanguard in an ever-competitive industry.

Undoubtedly, one of them is River Café, a renowned establishment that opened its doors in 1996 with the drive, dedication, commitment and responsibility of Mrs. Evangelina Sánchez, a prominent woman from a traditional family originally from San Juan de Abajo, Nayarit.

Her training, like that of many local entrepreneurs, began in prestigious restaurants such as Le Bistro and Café des Artistes, where she started to show her skills for administration and a firm character that motivated her coworkers to perform their tasks with quality and determination.

Sin duda, uno de los pilares más destacados de Puerto Vallarta es la gastronomía, compuesta por sorprendentes restaurantes que además de ofrecer exquisitos menús para consentir a los foodies, exitosamente han permanecido en la escena debido al esfuerzo que sus propietarios han puesto para mantenerlos a la vanguardia en una industria siempre competitiva.

Sin duda, uno de ellos es River Café, reconocido establecimiento que abrió sus puertas en 1996 con el empuje, dedicación, compromiso y responsabilidad de la señora Evangelina Sánchez, una destacada mujer proveniente del seno de una familia tradicional originaria de San Juan de Abajo, Nayarit.

Su formación, al igual que la de muchos empresarios locales, comenzó en restaurantes de alto prestigio como Le Bistro y Café des Artistes, donde empezaba a mostrar sus habilidades para la administración y un carácter firme que motivaba a sus compañeros a realizar sus labores con calidad y determinación.

The time came when she decided to become independent and create her own concept. Thus, she undertook the task of locating the ideal site and found an idyllic space in the heart of the Cuale River Island, a location that River Café has occupied for more than 20 years. After a lot of work and remodeling, it was finally inaugurated on December 24 with a defined menu and capacity for 150 people.

“Starting River Café was a great opportunity in my life. It has been the best thing that has happened to us and the best decision we could have made, because, together with my husband, we have created this peaceful place,” she says.

To remain popular with diners, the owner of River Café knows that the flavor and preparation of the dishes must always be consistent.

In addition, to stay at the forefront of this industry, the restaurant has been an active participant in the various culinary festivals that take place in the city every year. “In our second year, we began to participate in the International Gourmet Festival, an event I consider to be a great cooking class taught by world-renowned chefs. And we have participated in Restaurant Week every year since it began 14 years ago, this showcase helping us to create and establish new menus.”

Always active, Sánchez likes to be involved in altruistic issues and various business organizations.

Her restaurant has been the site of a large number of fundraising breakfasts for associations such as Voluntariado DIF, Pasitos de Luz, Becas Vallarta and CANICA, among many others.

Llegado el momento, decidió independizarse para crear su propio concepto. Así, se dio a la tarea de buscar el sitio ideal y encontró un idílico espacio en el corazón de la Isla del Río Cuale, ubicación que River Café ha ocupado por más de 20 años. Tras un proceso lleno de trabajo y remodelaciones, finalmente fue inaugurado el 24 de diciembre con menú definido y capacidad para 150 personas.

“Iniciar con River Café significó una gran oportunidad en mi vida. Ha sido lo mejor que nos ha pasado y la mejor decisión que pudimos haber tomado, pues junto con mi esposo hemos creado este apacible lugar”, comenta.

Para mantenerse en el gusto de los comensales, la propietaria de River Café sabe que el sabor y preparación de los platillos debe ser siempre consistente. Por otro lado, desde que surgiera Restaurant Week hace 14 años, hemos participado ininterrumpidamente en esa vitrina que nos sirve para crear y establecer nuevos menús”.

Siempre activa, Evangelina Sánchez es una persona a la que le gusta involucrarse en cuestiones altruistas y diversas organizaciones empresariales. “I believe that each one of us has to do his bit. There are many restaurant owners, but few of us are involved. Being present and being part of the trends contributes to improving our services and processes to continue to keep one of the most important tourist pillars of the destination strong.”

Despite her busy agenda, Sánchez enjoys taking time off from time to time to visit traditional places. “As I am a person who grew up happily in a small town, I like to go to Mascota, Navidad, San Sebastián del Oeste and El Tuito. Big cities are not my thing, but when I travel by road I love going from town to town.

Spontaneously, over a weekend, I’ll go to some beach far from the city like Yelapa, Quimixto, Las Animas and even Mayto and Tehuamixtle.”

With the recent anniversary of our destination, Señora Eva (as she’s affectionately called), predicts a great future. “Puerto Vallarta must continue to be cared for because this city is the anchor for the whole region to continue growing, both to the south and to the north. Without a doubt, we must continue betting on this beautiful place, because it is on a very good path,” she concludes.

A pesar de sus múltiples ocupaciones, Evangelina Sánchez disfruta mucho tomarse un tiempo libre de vez en cuando para visitar lugares tradicionales: “Como soy una persona que creció felizmente en un pueblo, me gusta ir a Mascota, Navidad, San Sebastián del Oeste y El Tuito. Las ciudades grandes no son lo mío, pero cuando viajo por carretera me encanta ir de pueblo en pueblo. Con el reciente aniversario de nuestro destino, la señora Eva (como la llaman cariñosamente), augura un gran futuro: “A Puerto Vallarta hay que seguir cuidándolo porque esta ciudad es el ancla para que siga creciendo toda la región tanto para el sur como para el norte. Sin duda, debemos continuar apostando por este hermoso lugar, pues va por muy buen camino”, finaliza.

ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE IN A PROTECTED NATURAL AREA: BAHÍA UNIDA After an unprecedented tourist boom generated by a spectacular photograph that circulated on the Internet some years ago, Playa del Amor (one of Riviera Nayarit’s icons, located in the Islas Marietas National Park) was closed to the public in May 2016.

The reason? The degradation of its marine ecosystems due to an excessive influx of visitors and practices harmful to the environment. It remained closed for five months, during which restoration work was carried out. After that period, the site reopened under new visitation rules to promote sustainable tourism that is friendly to the environment.

El motivo fue la degradación de sus ecosistemas marinos debido a una afluencia excesiva de visitantes y prácticas perjudiciales al medio ambiente.

Así permaneció durante cinco meses, tiempo en el que se llevaron a cabo los trabajos de restauración. Después de ese período, el sitio reabrió bajo nuevas normas de visitación para propiciar una actividad turística sustentable y amigable con el entorno.

This event marked the emergence of Bahía Unida, a civic association initially formed by local tourist service providers to conserve this natural park, injecting funds for its preservation, supervision and proper operation. Initially, this organization worked on cordoning off specific areas within the islands, placing mooring buoys (to prevent anchoring), training guides and tour operators and managing visits.

Currently, it pays for the surveillance program that guarantees Playa del Amor receives a maximum of 116 people per day and carries out monitoring and research work.

Its main mission is to reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the sea and to involve all sectors of the population in this change.

Su misión principal es reducir la cantidad de residuos plásticos que terminan en el mar e involucrar a todos los sectores de la población en este cambio de hábitos.

Undoubtedly, caring for the environment is everyone’s responsibility, but when documented actions are taken to contribute to sustainable development through an environmental certification at the national level, the case deserves separate recognition.

This is the case with The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort.

Sin duda, el cuidado del medio ambiente es una responsabilidad de todos, pero cuando se realizan acciones documentadas para contribuir al desarrollo sustentable a través de una certificación ambiental de nivel nacional, el caso merece un reconocimiento aparte. Este es el ejemplo de The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort.

Led by general manager James Hughes and director of engineering Carlos Vega, this six-month project (August 2017 to January 2018) consisted of improving all the resort’s processes, from the training of personnel in the handling of special waste to the completion of studies, preparation of procedures, compliance with NOMs and documentation of all this work to present to the Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (PROFEPA) (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection), the agency responsible for the care and preservation of the environment throughout the country.

“We already had an environmental impact study endorsed by the authorities. This background served for PROFEPA to invite us to the Programa Nacional de Auditoría Ambiental (National Environmental Audit Program), which has three different certifications. One of them, which covers our area, is the Certificado de Calidad Ambiental Turística (Tourism Environmental Quality Certificate) that examines water quality, proper management of waste, responsible use of energy, the ability to respond to environmental emergencies, studies of soil, subsoil, air and noise, as well as the proper management of natural, forest and wildlife resources.

We obtained direct certification, which means that we had zero failures,” explains Carlos Vega.

“Previamente, nosotros ya teníamos un estudio de impacto ambiental avalado por las autoridades. Este antecedente sirvió para que la PROFEPA nos invitara al Programa Nacional de Auditoría Ambiental, el cual tiene tres certificaciones diferentes y una de ellas, la que cubre nuestro rubro, es el Certificado de Calidad Ambiental Turística que examina la calidad del agua, el manejo apropiado de residuos, uso responsable de la energía, la capacidad de respuesta ante emergencias ambientales, estudios de suelo, subsuelo, aire y ruido, así como el manejo apropiado de los recursos naturales, forestales y de vida silvestre. Nosotros obtuvimos la certificación directa, esto quiere decir que tuvimos cero fallas”, explica Carlos Vega.

TRAJECTORY AND ALTRUISTIC PROJECT: FUNDACIÓN PUNTA DE MITA On December 19, 2017, Fundación Punta de Mita celebrated its first 10 years of promoting sustainable community development in Punta de Mita and Bahía de Banderas. Following the community foundation model, one of its main objectives is to seek the professionalization of other civic associations in the region through constant training. Likewise, they promote grassroots groups (neighbors who wish to undertake a plan for improvement in the community), advising them and providing support in the preparation of their projects.

Siguiendo el modelo de fundación comunitaria, uno de sus objetivos principales es buscar la profesionalización de otras asociaciones civiles de la región a través de capacitaciones constantes. Asimismo, promueven grupos base (vecinos que desean emprender un plan de mejoramiento en la comunidad) para asesorarlos y brindarles apoyo en la elaboración de su proyecto.

Although the road has been long, full of great achievements and obstacles they have managed to overcome, Fundación Punta de Mita has helped to strengthen the social fabric of the multicultural community it serves. Proof of this is the recent inauguration of the Del Mar Community Center, a project that aims to prevent school dropouts and offer a space for workshops and teamwork. With the support of Soriana customers through the Redondeo program, the first stage of the complex was begun in August 2016, and thanks to the generous contribution of a special donor, it was completed in October 2017. Now, it serves as a means of integration and community development with its multipurpose room, outdoor kitchen, bathrooms, large patio and terrace for various recreational activities.

In addition, Fundación Punta de Mita is one of 16 community foundations in Mexico and one of the few organizations in Bahía de Banderas that, among other things, is accredited as an institutional and transparent organization by the Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía (CEMEFI) (Mexican Center for Philanthropy), is a grantee authorized by the Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT) (Tax Administration Service) and, thanks to the partnership with the International Community Foundation and Canadian Children’s Shelter of Hope Foundation, can offer tax deductible receipts both in the United States and Canada.

Aunque el camino ha sido largo, lleno de grandes logros y obstáculos que han sabido sortear, Fundación Punta de Mita ha contribuido a fortalecer el tejido social de la comunidad multicultural a la que atiende. Muestra de ello es la reciente inauguración del Centro Comunitario Del Mar, un proyecto que tiene como objetivo combatir la deserción escolar y ofrecer un espacio para talleres y trabajo en equipo. Junto con el apoyo de los clientes de Soriana a través del programa Redondeo, la primera etapa del complejo se comenzó a construir en agosto de 2016 y gracias a la generosa aportación de un donante especial, se logró culminar en octubre de 2017. Ahora, este lugar funge como medio de integración y desarrollo comunitario a través de una sala de usos múltiples, cocina al aire libre, baños, un gran patio y terraza para diversas actividades recreativas.

Además, Fundación Punta de Mita es una de las 16 fundaciones comunitarias de México y una de las pocas organizaciones en Bahía de Banderas que, entre otras cosas, cuenta con la acreditación de institucionalidad y transparencia por parte del CEMEFI (Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía), es donataria autorizada por el SAT (Servicio de Administración Tributaria) y gracias a la alianza con la International Community Foundation y Canadian Children’s Shelter of Hope Foundation, pueden ofrecer recibos deducibles tanto en Estados Unidos como en Canadá.

Para lograr el objetivo, el Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUC) fungió como un espacio-taller al aire libre que en todo momento estuvo equipado de conformidad con los requerimientos de los escultores, tanto en herramientas y utensilios como en materiales y sustancias a esculpir.

According to the organizers, the general purpose behind this first Foro Internacional de Escultores was to enrich the urban-artistic heritage of Puerto Vallarta and endow the destination with monumental works that not only strengthen the social and civic fabric of the city, but also provide new focuses of identification and collective pride.

Currently, and thanks to the generous sponsors, six of the eleven sculptures are in the process of being donated to the same number of neighborhoods in the destination; two others have already been moved to their permanent headquarters; and the rest are on the CUC’s facilities.

ART RETREAT: MANUEL PALOS AND MARTÍN DISTANCIA SCULPTURE WORKSHOP Firmly believing that Puerto Vallarta is a source of inspiration, award-winning Mexican sculptors and stone carvers Manuel Palos and Martín Distancia have led sculpture workshops and retreats in the destination for 15 years, transmitting their knowledge to students and artists from the USA, Canada and Europe; who come to experiment with different techniques and materials, such as marble and stone.

The retreats are headquartered in a villa in downtown Puerto Vallarta, where Manuel Palos has a large studio and where his daughter Alejandra Palos, also a sculptor and coordinator of the program, receives the students.

This site provides the space, tools and privileged views needed to achieve their mission, making the experience not only enlightening in creative terms for the students, but also allowing them to enjoy Puerto Vallarta’s attractions in their free time and live in a completely multicultural environment.

However, the doors are also open to local students and artists who wish to acquire new skills.

La sede de los retiros es una villa ubicada en El Centro de Puerto Vallarta, donde Manuel Palos tiene un amplio estudio y donde su hija, la también escultora y coordinadora del programa, Alejandra Palos, recibe a los alumnos. En el sitio cuentan con espacio, herramientas y vistas privilegiadas para lograr su cometido. La experiencia no solo resulta reveladora en términos creativos para los aprendices, pues además disfrutan las atracciones de Puerto Vallarta en sus tiempos libres y conviven en un ambiente completamente multicultural. Por otro lado, las puertas del lugar están abiertas también para pupilos y artistas locales que desean adquirir nuevas habilidades.

Originally from Zacatecas, Palos divides his time between San Francisco and Puerto Vallarta.

During his more than 40-year career, he has produced hundreds of pieces and monuments in Mexico and the USA, highlighted by his participation in the restoration of San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts and decoration of the Pacific Telephone Building. Distancia lives in Puerto Vallarta and has received multiple awards for his work.

In 2012, both collaborated in the restoration project of Los Arcos del Malecón after Hurricane Kenna, while in 2010 they participated in the Puerto Vallarta Simposio Internacional de Escultura (International Sculpture Symposium). Their next retreat is scheduled for September 2018.

Originario de Zacatecas, Manuel Palos reside de manera itinerante entre San Francisco y Puerto Vallarta. A lo largo de su trayectoria de más de 40 años, ha elaborado cientos de piezas y monumentos en México y Estados Unidos, destacando su participación en la restauración del Palacio de Bellas Artes de San Francisco y la decoración del edificio Pacific Telephone Building.

Martín Distancia vive en Puerto Vallarta y ha recibido múltiples reconocimientos por su trabajo.

En 2012, ambos colaboraron en el proyecto de restauración de Los Arcos del Malecón tras el huracán Kenna; mientras que en 2010 participaron en el Simposio Internacional de Escultura de Puerto Vallarta. Su próximo retiro está programado para septiembre de 2018.

Of these, fifteen-year-old La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club is well established and recognized by the Federación Mexicana de Polo (Mexican Polo Federation).

And the emergence of the other complexes during the past decade has helped to expand this vision and encourage riding among the population. A few months ago, La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club held the fourth Copa Jaguar - Riviera Nayarit, where some of the best teams in western Mexico participated with players from around Mexico, Argentina, Italy, Portugal and Guatemala. This year, the event was even more important because it formed part of the Primer Circuito de Polo del Pacífico (First Pacific Polo Circuit), along with the 19th Copa Agua Alta, held in Costa Careyes.

During the past year, the site also sponsored the Copa de Polo La Patrona and held the Torneo de Polo Riviera Nayarit 10 Años (Riviera Nayarit 10-Year Polo Tournament), which commemorated the first decade since the creation of this tourist brand and showed the importance of this sports segment.

Hace algunos meses, La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club celebró la cuarta edición de la Copa Jaguar - Riviera Nayarit, en la que participaron algunos de los mejores equipos del occidente del país con jugadores de México, Argentina, Italia, Portugal y Guatemala. Este año, el evento fue aún más trascendental debido a que conformó el Primer Circuito de Polo del Pacífico junto con la decimonovena Copa Agua Alta celebrada en Costa Careyes.

Además de esta competencia, durante el último año, el recinto también auspició la Copa de Polo La Patrona y recibió el Torneo de Polo Riviera Nayarit 10 Años (que conmemoró la primera década de haber sido creada esta marca turística y mostró la importancia de este segmento deportivo).

Banderas Bay has established itself as one of the world’s epicenters for water sports in recent years. Thus, Puerto Vallarta was host to the most recent National Stand-Up Paddle and Paddleboard Championship, with 60 competitors from various states of Mexico, as well as abroad.

The event (with previous editions held in Sayulita) was organized by the Asociación de Surf del Estado de Jalisco (ASEJ) (Surf Association of the State of Jalisco) and had the support of institutions such as the municipalities of Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrientes, among others.

NAUTICAL EVENT EVENTO NÁUTICO During the month of March, Puerto Vallarta successfully hosted the 42nd edition of MEXORC (Mexican Ocean Racing Circuit), the bi-annual regatta organized by the Asociación Mexicana de Vela Océanica (Mexican Ocean Sailing Association), the Secretaría de Turismo Federal (Federal Ministry of Tourism), the Secretaría de Marina (Ministry of the Navy) and the municipal government of Puerto Vallarta.

In addition, it had the support of institutions such as the government of Jalisco, the Federación Mexicana de Vela (Mexican Sailing Federation) and Marina Vallarta, which hosted the participating vessels.

This event brought together more than 400 participants, with 26 boats competing in four categories. The inauguration, held at Los Arcos del Malecón, created an incredible scene— with sailboats filling the sea—for the hundreds of attendees to enjoy. Equally impressive was the awards and closing ceremony in Majahuitas, where the competitors were delighted by the experience.

The organizing committee has guaranteed that the next edition of MEXORC also will be held at Marina Vallarta.

One of Puerto Vallarta’s historic restaurants has reopened to the public in its traditional and charming location on the Cuale River Island. Le Bistro now offers a renewed concept that maintains its excellent international cuisine, but with a fresher and more casual approach. To discover its transformation, we visited the kitchen of chef Humberto Ponce, who prepared one of the most popular dishes on the new menu: the salmon stuffed with goat cheese with fine herbs, accompanied by risotto and Poblano sauce.

The legacy of France, Italy and Mexico is fused through contrasting elements that result in a smooth, creamy and subtly seasoned combination.

The stuffed fillet of salmon (reflecting Gallic tastes) is marinated, seared lightly and bathed in a meunière sauce based on butter, parsley, garlic, onion, pepper and pistachios. The risotto (an Italian classic) is cooked with white wine, while the Poblana sauce (present in several recipes of Mexican cuisine) is prepared with roasted Poblano

To accompany this creation, a white or red wine is recommended.

On this occasion, the pairing was a Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks Chardonnay, with elegant citrus aromas and tropical notes —unquestionably, a good complement to a delicate and well-balanced dish.

In the evening, dinner options are just as appetizing. Begin with a sampling of Mexican cheeses to share (as an appetizer) and then succulent pork loin wrapped in bacon and served with cauliflower puree and croquettes. Accompany it with an excellent cabernet sauvignon or another French or Mexican wine from the cellar. They also feature homemade desserts, such as passion fruit crème brûlée or strawberry cheesecake.

In this new hotspot of contemporary Mexican cuisine, the young chefs specialize in reinterpreting traditional Mexican recipes and the fusion of foreign dishes with local ingredients and techniques. Its chic minimalist decor, featuring traditional touches, low lighting and an intimate and comfortable atmosphere, is ideal for experiencing these original culinary creations accompanied by good conversation.

Its creative menu (including one of five courses and another of nine, both with pairing and ideal for trying a bit of everything) features a variety of traditional soups, tostadas, fresh seafood, aguachiles and fish-based specials of the day (mahi-mahi or red snapper), as well as succulent cuts of meat. All dishes contain only seasonal local ingredients, so the menu changes constantly, each visit different.

Savor an exquisite slice of mahi-mahi seared in butter, with cauliflower carpaccio, grilled corn puree, pea sprouts and a light Poblano chile salsa with a lot of flavor. Artisan desserts also stand out, including international classics with a Mexican twist, such as cajeta crème brûlée and the surprising caramelized habanero chile.

In addition, Icú features a select cellar of 72 Mexican wines from different regions and a mixology bar based on distillates such as tequila, raicilla and mezcal.

A Historic Town that Lives in the Present

Un Pueblo Histórico que Vive el Presente

Jala is about 125 miles by road from Puerto Vallarta, a journey of less than three hours to Guadalajara.

Along the way to this fascinating municipality, you can see the various villages of the Nayarit coast (including historic Compostela).

Jala se encuentra a 200 kilómetros por carretera desde Puerto Vallarta, un trayecto de menos de 3 horas de duración rumbo a Guadalajara. En el transcurso, se pueden observar los variopintos pueblos de la costa nayarita (incluida la histórica Compostela), a medida que te acercas a este fascinante municipio.

Upon arrival, you will be impressed by the grid layout of the streets, where the majesty of its historic colonial buildings contrasts with a lively atmosphere, full of shops, stalls and many families with children.

Jala was founded by the Spanish conquerors around 1530, although there were already previous settlements in the area dating back more than a thousand years.

Formerly known as Xala (Nahuatl name translated as “abundant in sand,” alluding to the physiognomy of this volcanic zone), its heyday was in the mid-19th century, thanks to agriculture, livestock and mining fostered by merchant families and landowners. The results of this development are the impressive mansions and old buildings that still exist in Jala today. Around the main plaza, many examples of its architectural wealth can be seen, the streets lined with rows of colonial-style mansions, the great majority in perfectly preserved 19th-century style and now home to both private and public use, the residents perfectly integrating monuments and buildings into their daily lives.

Jewel of Civic and Religious Architecture A great example of this fascinating town’s civic architecture is Casa Salazar, an 18th-century mansion built by the prominent Salazar family, of Spanish origin, who drove the development of Jala by investing in infrastructure beginning in the 1850s. Although its facade corresponds to the

Anteriormente conocido como Xala, este nombre náhuatl se traduce como “abundante en arena”, que hace alusión a la fisonomía de esta zona volcánica. Su mayor esplendor se dio a mediados del siglo XIX gracias a la agricultura, ganadería y minería fomentada por familias comerciantes y terratenientes. Resultado de este desarrollo son las impresionantes casonas y edificios antiguos con los que Jala cuenta hoy en día.

Alrededor de la plaza central, abundan los ejemplos de riqueza arquitectónica que se observa en sus calles con hileras de casonas de corte colonial, la gran mayoría de estilo decimonónico (en perfecto estado de conservación) y que hoy en día tienen uso tanto privado como público, pues los habitantes han integrado a la perfección los monumentos y edificios a su vida diaria.

Joyas de Arquitectura Civil y Religiosa Un gran ejemplo de la arquitectura civil de este fascinante pueblo es la Casa Salazar, una casona del siglo

Another of the most important buildings in Jala is the Escuela Primaria Miguel Hidalgo (Miguel Hidalgo Elementary School), a great example of neoclassical style, with its cornices and high walls, central courtyard with columns and Art Deco details. The Casa de Cultura Xala also stands out, a neoclassical building with a well-preserved stately facade, its large gate providing access to an interior with high vaulted ceilings and a large patio surrounded by arches.

Magnificent examples of religious architecture predominate in the urban landscape. The Basílica Lateranense, dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Our Lady of the Assumption), with construction begun in 1856 and completed in 1912, stands out for the mixture of styles in both its exterior and interior as diverse as neo-baroque, neoclassical and Art Deco, as well as its multicolor stone facade, which ranges from pink and salmon to yellow and green.

Across the way, the Convento de la Limpia y Pura Concepción de María (Convent of the Clean and Pure Conception of Mary) is Jala’s oldest monument, built by the Franciscans between 1582 and 1617. Its beauty lies in the simplicity of its white facade and the enigmatic figure of the Immaculate Conception. The plumes on its gate are an example of “tequilque” art, combining Hispanic and indigenous influences. On the other hand, the neoclassical Santuario de la Natividad (Sanctuary of the Nativity) features a facade of pink stone, and its interiors stand out for Art Nouveau murals.

También destaca la Casa de Cultura Xala, un edificio del neoclásico con una fachada muy bien conservada y de corte señorial, en el que su gran portón da acceso a un interior con altos techos abovedados y un gran patio rodeado por arcos.

En el paisaje urbano también predominan magníficos ejemplos de arquitectura religiosa. La Basílica Lateranense dedicada a Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (cuya construcción inició en 1856 y finalizó en 1912), destaca por mezclar en su interior y exterior estilos tan diversos como el neobarroco, el neoclásico y detalles art decó; así como su fachada de cantera multicolor, desde rosa y salmón hasta amarillo y verde.

En frente se sitúa la iglesia del Convento de la Limpia y Pura Concepción de María, el monumento más antiguo de Jala.

Los franciscanos construyeron este templo entre 1582 y 1617. Su belleza reside en la sencillez de su blanca fachada y la enigmática figura de la Purísima Concepción con penachos de plumas sobre su portón, una muestra del arte “tequilque” que combina lo hispano y lo indígena.

Por otro lado está el Santuario de la Natividad, de estilo neoclásico, cuya fachada es de cantera rosa y sus interiores destacan por decoraciones con pintura mural de estilo art nouveau.

Su Valle Principal, es decir, el primer cráter situado sobre la caldera del volcán (que cuenta con una dimensión de 1.5 km de largo por 500 m de ancho), es el lugar idóneo para pasear y caminar. Aquí se pueden observar diferentes tipos de piedras volcánicas, como las rocas ígneas que caracterizan la arena negra del camino y, con suerte, ejemplares de obsidiana.

El Ceboruco también es hogar de varios animales: aves como el cenzontle y urracas de cola azul, venados, coyotes, tigrillos y gatos monteses; además de plantas como el árnica y la salvia.

Sin embargo, lo más divertido y espectacular de visitar este gigante de piedra y lava, son las fumarolas que se ubican en este valle, que además de ser un firme recordatorio de que el interior de este volcán nunca duerme, son utilizadas para calentar comida de manera muy original.
