or several years, we have been promoting the month of May as one in which the level of activity in town, as far as recreational events and cultural offerings are concerned, is on the rise, despite the fact that many snowbirds flock back north sometime during late March or April. We’d love to tell you we’ve been right, but we’d rather invite you to browse the contents of this, our annual “Best of Vallarta” issue, where you will find at least nine great reasons to consider spending time in Banderas Bay during the month of May.

One of those reasons is, of course, our very own Restaurant Week, taking place for the 11th year, and featuring 35 excellent dining options around the bay to enjoy. We welcome six restaurants participating for the first time, six that have participated in every edition, and 27 that have participated for two consecutive years or more, a testament to the event’s enduring success. nce Holy Week—or “Semana Santa,” as it’s called in Mexico— descends upon Banderas Bay each year, the destination experiences a symbolic “change of guards” regarding residents and visitors. Many expats who enjoy the region during the winter and spring months begin planning their annual pilgrimage back up north around the time Easter and spring break arrive. At the same time, national and international vacation periods fill the bay with young crowds and Mexican families. Despite the fact that these events herald the end of “the season” in the minds and hearts of some foreign visitors, May in Puerto Vallarta is an increasingly appealing time for many, particularly given the number of special events and fiestas that take place throughout the month. This one-of-a-kind event organized by the Amapas Neighborhood Association drew crowds by the hundreds to an event in which several cross-dressing personalities in full regalia had to race against one another by making stops at several neighborhood businesses and completing tasks. Sid Goodman

When it comes to keeping busy in Puerto Vallarta, few expats could author a how-to guide as brilliantly as Sid Goodman. Back in 2002, Puerto Vallarta was not on his radar. “I hadn’t even heard of it!” he chuckles. However, a series of increasingly longer visits resulted in a permanent move in 2007. A dedicated community activist, he partnered with other community leaders to develop TaxiSafe Puerto Vallarta (taxisafepv.com) in 2011, in conjunction with local authorities, providing visitors with an extra layer of security when hailing a cab in town. Word got around among friends about his outstanding gourmet chili recipe, which he used to serve at a traditional Christmas party. A few personal orders led to a farmer’s market stand, and victory in just about every chili cook-off in the region. Today, Sid’s World Famous (sidsworldfamous.com) is available in several varieties, along with side orders, delivered to your own home. And speaking of farmer’s markets, he is also the founder of the now defunct Saturday Market Co-Op on Púlpito St. Author of Bullying: Why Would You Want To Do That?, a schoolbook designed to raise awareness of bullying in the United States’ elementary school systems, he is presently working on a fundraising campaign to established a related foundation and reissue the book, adapted to a Mexican sensibility. Not content with addressing a young audience, he took time to pen Zilan’s Messengers, a science fiction novel, which he self-published through Amazon.com. Now in his mid-70s, he is not shy about offering advice to those looking for things to do: “Get off your butt and start looking! There are plenty of organizations and pursuits that have a place for you.” PO

Si se trata de mantenerse ocupado en Puerto Vallarta, pocos extranjeros lo hacen con tanto estilo y entusiasmo como Sid Goodman. En 2002, para él Puerto Vallarta no existía. “Ni siquiera había escuchado hablar de la ciudad,” recuerda, bromeando. Hoy en día, Sid’s World Famous Chili (sidsworldfamous. com) se puede adquirir en diversas variedades, junto con una selección de entradas, y entrega a domicilio. Y hablando de mercados artesanales, fue él quien fundó el Saturday Market Co-Op de la calle Púlpito. Es autor de Bullying: Why Would You Want To Do That? (Bullying: ¿Por qué querrías hacerlo?) un libro escolar diseñado para prevenir el bullying en el sistema de educación primaria estadounidense, y actualmente está diseñando una campaña de recaudación para traducir el libro y adaptarlo a la sensibilidad mexicana. Y no satisfecho con escribir para un público joven, también se dio tiempo de escribir Zilan’s Messengers, una novela de ciencia ficción que publicó a través de Amazon.com. Ahora que es septuagenario, no titubea al ofrecer consejos a quienes estén ansiosos por encontrar algo que hacer: “¡No esperes a que llegue, búscalo! Alberto Fabián

In the early ’60s, when Alberto Fabián Sahagún Orozco was about 12, a theatrical group presenting melodramas came to his hometown, La Barca, Jalisco. He was captivated by these shows and began to dream of being on stage himself. In the ’70s, already a trained actor and working as an advisor for the Jalisco Department of Fine Arts, he traveled to Puerto Vallarta to teach a course. In Vallarta he discovered a number of talented people, enough to stage theatrical performances, and seduced by the beauty of the port of yesteryear, he decided to stay and began working with the city’s theatrical group, Grupo Municipal de Teatro. At that time, there was only one other director in town, putting on sporadic shows, and when he stopped, Fabián was the only one left to promote local theater for several years.

At the beginning of this year, el profe Fabián, as he’s known, retired from the city government after 29 years of directing Grupo Municipal de Teatro, having presented dozens of shows for the public, among them 12 works of his own. As far as future plans, he hopes to return to his hometown to continue creating as a director and playwright. “I’m left with gratifying experiences of hard work and challenges ... the pleasure of a public that recognizes me on the street for my work ... It gives me great satisfaction to be able to say that many of the important figures in today’s local theatrical movement have been my students.” JP A inicios de la década de los sesentas, cuando Alberto Fabián Sahagún Orozco tenía alrededor de doce años de edad, un teatro ambulante llegó a La Barca, Jalisco, de donde es originario, presentando melodramas teatrales. Estas representaciones lo conquistaron y comenzó a soñar con estar arriba de un escenario. En la década de los setentas, ya formado como actor, Alberto Fabián consiguió trabajo como orientador artístico en el departamento de Bellas Artes del estado de Jalisco donde le propusieron viajar a Puerto Vallarta para impartir un curso. Al llegar a nuestra ciudad descubrió gente talentosa con la que podría armar montajes teatrales. Y, conquistado por la hermosura del puerto de antaño, decidió quedarse a vivir aquí y comenzar a trabajar con el Grupo Municipal de Teatro. En ese entonces, en el pueblo sólo existía otro director haciendo teatro esporádicamente y cuando dejó de hacerlo, dejó a Alberto Fabián como el único exponente de teatro en Puerto Vallarta por varios años. A inicio de este año, el profe Fabián, como se le conoce popularmente, fue jubilado del H. Ayuntamiento de Puerto Vallarta después de 29 años de dirigir el Grupo Municipal de Teatro con decenas de obras de teatro montadas para el público local, entre las que destacan 12 obras de su autoría. Entre sus planes futuros se encuentra el regresar a su ciudad de origen a seguir creando como director y dramaturgo teatral. Y se retira de nuestra ciudad muy agradecido por tantos años de logros.

Summer in Puerto Vallarta: 8 Tips Why do folks insist on calling summer in Puerto Vallarta the “low” season? With increasing numbers of national and international visitors taking advantage of equally increasing promotional summer incentives, the misnomer begs reconsideration. We spoke to a number of tourists, residents and local business owners to collect some of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta during the summer.

1. Act like a tourist. Many hotels in town offer affordable day-pass access for locals looking for a vacation experience, even if it is for just a few hours. 2. Look for restaurant promotions. Inspired by Restaurant Week, many local restaurants offer special fixed-price menus throughout the summer, along with all-you-can-eat or 2x1 cocktail promotions. 3. Head to the mountains. If the heat and humidity are getting to you, there are excellent getaway opportunities in nearby towns such as Talpa, Mascota and San Sebastian. 4. Go to the movies. Summer blockbusters are a huge deal north of the border. Locally, take advantage of our multiplexes, which offer the latest releases in comfortable (air-conditioned!) theaters comparable to those in the USA and Canada, at about half the price. 5. Enjoy the sweating. If you cannot avoid it, you might as well enjoy it. Enroll in a dance or yoga class or a neighborhood gym. 6. Put your camera to work. Martini

hile it is difficult to ascertain the exact origin of the martini, the popular drink first appeared in bartending guides around the end of the 19th century. The standard recipe calls for two parts dry gin to one part dry vermouth, stirred in a mixing glass with ice cubes and served in a chilled cocktail glass. Common variations include the dry martini, with the vermouth reduced substantially, and the dirty martini, with a splash of olive juice and usually an olive garnish. Nowadays, there are as many varieties of the cocktail as there are venues around town to enjoy them, many recipes bypassing the original ingredients altogether in favor of new and original ways to seduce. PERFORMING ARTS • ARTES ESCÉNICAS Four years ago, San Pancho residents Gilles Ste-Croix and wife Monique Voyer approached the town’s Entreamigos Centro Comunitario Educativo (entreamigos.org. mx) about putting together a circus show featuring local children to raise funds for the organization. The first show, in March 2011, was a huge success, but this is no surprise, given that Ste-Croix is one of the founding members of the internationally renowned Cirque du Soleil! Hace cuatro años, los residentes de San Pancho Gilles Ste-Croix y su esposa Monique Voyer propusieron al Centro Comunitario Entreamigos (entreamigos.org.mx) la idea de montar un espectáculo circense con los niños de San Pancho para recaudar fondos para la organización. Two years and thousands of hours of training later, a second production debuted. Like the first, it relied on personal friends of the couple and Cirque’s own Circo del Mundo program, which donates equipment no longer in use by its companies. Produced by Ste-Croix and Voyer, Orale brought together 60 San Pancho children, along with 150 local volunteers and parents, for a 90-minute show you probably never heard of because tickets sold out minutes after going on sale. As the program grew, so did its need for a permanent home. In 2014 Circo de los Niños (circodelosninosdesanpancho.mx) gained access to one of the town’s unused warehouses, next to Entreamigos. Once settled in, all efforts were directed at producing Dar a Luz, their very successful third show, performed three times in March to sold-out audiences. More than a circus school, Circo de los Niños strives to help children and young adults gain confidence in themselves and discover their creative sides through various circus arts disciplines. Given the founders’ credentials, there is no other place in the world where local children can enjoy such a rare opportunity. And for those of us in the audience, once you enjoy one of their performances, you will not want to miss any others! Al igual que la primera, contó con la participación de amigos cercanos, así como el programa Circo del Mundo, a través del cual Cirque du Soleil dona equipo que ya no utilizan a otras compañías. Producido por Ste-Croix y Voyer, Orale protagonizó a 60 niños de San Pancho quienes ofrecieron un espectáculo de 90, apoyados por 150 voluntarios locales y familiares, del cual seguramente ni te enteraste, ya que sus boletos se agotaron minutos después de que comenzaron a venderlos. Al ir creciendo el programa, también creció la necesidad de contar con un espacio permanente. En 2014 Circo de los Niños (circodelosninosdesanpancho.mx) logro conseguir acceso a una de las bodegas abandonadas del pueblo, junto a la de Entreamigos. Una vez instalados, canalizaron todos sus esfuerzos para producir Dar a Luz, su exitoso tercer espectáculo, el cual se presentó tres veces en marzo con localidades agotadas. Más que una escuela de circo, Circo de los Niños busca ayudar a niños y adolescentes a tener confianza en sí mismos y descubrir su lado creativo a través de diversas disciplinas circenses. This year, Winnie, Rachel, Trixie and Trampolina, aka The Kinsey Sicks (kinseysicks.com), wanted to travel to Scotland to participate in the prestigious Edinburgh Festival Fringe, “defying the norm since 1947.” Sooner than you can say dragapella, the successful “beautyshop quartet” put together a Kickstarter campaign, hoping to meet a goal of $24,500 USD to make the trip. They raised $38,779 in one month. “We are beyond grateful,” declared local resident Benjamin “Rachel” Schatz. Bon voyage! PO Donde hay voluntad, hay modo. The talented singing string quartet Well Strung returned to Puerto Vallarta in January for the second year in a row and sold out each and every one of their performances. At this point, their third visit will be way more than a charm! El Hombre Sin Adjetivos

A thought-provoking play about insanity, expressed through the quirky personalities of its three characters as they travel together to a close encounter with death, El Hombre Sin Adjetivos gave audiences lots to talk about. Presented by Grupo de Teatro Dionisio, under the direction of Juan Pablo Hernández, El Hombre Sin Adjetivos was written by Mexican playwright Mario Cantú, who was more than happy to collaborate with the group. The company expects to travel to Lagos de Moreno in June for the annual Encuentro de Teatro del Interior, a regional theater competition. Esta provocativa obra sobre la locura expresada a través de las excéntricas personalidades de sus tres personajes al realizar una travesía que los lleva a un encuentro cercano con la muerte, El Hombre Sin Adjetivos dio al público mucho de que hablar. Presentada por el Grupo de Teatro Dionisio bajo dirección de Juan Pablo Hernández, El Hombre Sin Adjetivos fue escrita por el dramaturgo mexicano Mario Cantú, quien colaboró ampliamente con la compañía. Classic Rock Festival

The first ever Vallarta-Nayarit Classic Rock Festival made a successful debut this past December, with events taking place throughout Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta. Three days of performances by some of the greatest musicians from the classic rock era—including Stray Cats, Poco, Jefferson Starship and Cheap Trick—did not disappoint. And a percentage of ticket sales was directed to a local charity. Good call! PO

In an effort to expand the cultural offerings available to the Vallarta community at Los Mangos Public Library, Paco began a successful series of music appreciation lectures there. It should be noted that Paco has a degree in music, is a talented pianist and produces a successful artist tribute show at The Palm. But what makes his talks at Los Mangos so special? His approach to the young— and not so young—looking for a better understanding of music makes valuable information easily accessible (in every way, as the talks are free). To date, attendees have learned about the origin of music in commercial cinema and science fiction, the transformation of classical music in pop, classical music in cartoons and the art of listening. Miguel Almaguer’s Morphing Landscape Former Puerto Vallarta Youth Orchestra conductor Miguel Almaguer returned to Puerto Vallarta in January to perform a piano recital featuring a repertoire of minimalist masterpieces by renowned composers Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt and John Cage, a definite first in the city. His concerns about whether the program would appeal to local audiences dissipated soon after the performance began, with longer-than-usual ovations from the audience. Alain Perreault ’s Equus Whether Puerto Vallarta was ready for a locally brewed production of Equus, Peter Schaffer’s acclaimed 1973 drama about a psychiatrist treating a teenager who has a pathological fascination with horses, is a matter of opinion. Regardless, skillful direction by Perreault, along with polished performances by the entire cast, dramatically raised the bar like no other, as far as locally produced plays are concerned. It was a mixed blessing for director/producer/actor Aggie Unda and her associate, singer/actor Alberto Mejía, when investors in Nuevo Vallarta approached them with the idea of running a new performance venue in said community. It was not quite a curse, but the process of starting from scratch proved grueling, to say the least. Yet, thanks to her production of the musical Chicago, along with a handful of other acts they booked, it was a successful maiden season. Best wishes for a second one! PO Just as we wrap up this issue, Tercera Llamada, a new performance space across from Walmart Macroplaza, is opening its doors, promising a whole series of shows and plays. Some projects just have staying power. Mexican playwright Tomás Urtusástegui’s Princesas Desesperadas, a satirical play in Spanish about four Disney princesses living questionably happy lives, opened at the Boutique Theatre to great acclaim. Presentations followed at different venues around town, one of the most successful local productions in Puerto Vallarta to date wrapping up at The Palm Cabaret and Bar, where it was also adapted and presented in English four times to a roaring audience. Did the princesses live happily ever after? It’s hard to tell—it is said that a follow-up is in the works. PO

Amy Armstrong Amy Armstrong could have cut her annual tour to Puerto Vallarta short when she learned that her pianist, Freddy Allen, would not be able to accompany her due to unexpected surgery. But rather than canceling, the popular singer known for her “voice of an angel and mouth of a sailor” teamed with the Argentinian duo Bohemia Viva, whose charismatic guitar and vocal harmonies provided the perfect backdrop for a very successful season. Still not satisfied, she joined the English production of Princesas Desesperadas as one of four disgruntled Disney princesses living 15 years after “happily ever after.”

Miss Conception and Greater Tuna When it comes to the costumes actors wore on stage, The Wonderful World of Miss Conception and Greater Tuna never ceased to surprise us! In his tribute to Disney heroines, performer Kevin Levesque, aka Miss Conception, came onstage wearing 10 layers of costumes, each representing a different character. As the show progressed, he simply peeled them off before the audience’s eyes, to their amazement. In Greater Tuna, a hysterical comedy about a small town in South Texas, actors Tracy Parks and Chaz Weathers flawlessly portrayed 20 different characters with a total of 42 costume changes during the play, aided by a fine-tuned support crew behind the scenes. Designed by architect José de Jesús Torres Vega, Los Muertos Pier here in Puerto Vallarta recently was recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world by CNN, the only pier in Mexico included in the list. Inaugurated in 2013, the updated pier features a spiraling walkway that extends 100 meters over the water in the popular Olas Altas-Los Muertos Beach area.

And now the Visitors and Convention Bureau, Department of Tourism and Puerto Vallarta city government have reached an agreement to provide ongoing maintenance and prevent deterioration. The maintenance master plan also includes the Malecon and its sculptures, the budget for the first year’s work estimated at 2.5 - 5 million pesos. This move is definitely a masterstroke to maintain what is undoubtedly one of our destination’s most recognized tourist attractions, along with Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Conservatory of Mexican Orchids It was a long time coming, but when the Vallarta Botanical Garden’s new Vallarta Conservatory of Mexican Orchids opened to the public this past season, nobody could have foreseen the draw it would become for the popular Puerto Vallarta attraction. Other botanical gardens took notice, and this year the Vallarta Botanical Garden was once again voted one of the “Top 10 North American Gardens Worth Traveling For” at the North American Garden Tourism Conference in Toronto, Canada. One of the most memorable fêtes this season was Timothy Real Estate Group’s second House Hunters International screening and charity event, held at Mantamar Beach Club. The lavish party to benefit Becas Vallarta, Asilo San Juan Diego, Vallarta Botanical Gardens and other local organizations used a Gilligan’s Island theme to get over 600 people in a festive and giving spirit. The stars of the evening, however, were the local personalities Carl Timothy handpicked as the characters from the original TV show, who spent the evening striking poses with the rest of the guests. And the fun raised $275,000 pesos to help the organizations! Proyecto Manta caught our attention over the past few months, as we had never heard of any organization focusing specific resources on this magnificent species. Commonly caught for consumption in the ’80s and ’90s, they consequently were almost wiped out. Today, manta rays generate $153 million globally in tourism revenue each year. And although they have been protected from fisheries for more than a decade, they remain unfortunate victims of entanglement and fishing gear. Proyecto Manta’s goals include monitoring their migratory patterns, daily and seasonal abundance and oceanographic factors affecting their presence and number. CHEF IVAN LORENZO LLAMAS Originally from Puerto Vallarta, 24-year-old Lorenzo received his first hands-on culinary experiences at age 16, when he joined the former Agave Grill in Puerto Vallarta’s El Centro. Subsequent jobs at Espresso, Cayo Tres and other restaurants in the region—including the city’s Convention Center— have allowed him to continuously perfect his craft, bringing his personal flair to Di Vino Dante six months ago.

A fresh and healthy summer option, this sizable tuna fillet is marinated in soy sauce with a touch of ginger, wrapped in a pea crust and cooked to perfection. It is served over a slice of porcini-soy sauce gelatin, with a side of ginger-lime hummus, mashed peas, edamame and fresh vegetables. The dish is paired with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, a fresh and acidic counterpart to the citrus flavors of the dish, and is best enjoyed early evening. Di Vino Dante ofrece su Atún Dante, una opción fresca y saludable para este verano. Consiste en un filete de atún marinado en salsa de soya con un toque de jengibre, envuelto en una costra de chícharo y cocinando a la perfección. This time around, we set our sights on Plaza Canalán, a conglomerate of home furnishing shops located on a strip along the southbound side of Carr. 200, just as you enter Puerto Vallarta from the north. The location is ideal, benefitting those living in Nuevo Vallarta and other points in Riviera Nayarit, as well as folks in Puerto Vallarta and points south. While it’s impossible to determine what compels specific business types to set up shop at a specific location, we are truly grateful for this happenstance, and anybody looking for home furnishing solutions should consider a trip to Plaza Canalán.

En esta ocasión nos dirigimos a Plaza Canalán, un conglomerado de tiendas de decoración situadas a lo largo del carril norte-sur de la Carretera 200, justo al entrar a Puerto Vallarta desde el norte. The plaza is impossible to miss coming from the north—right after you drive over the Ameca River, which marks the boundary of Nayarit and Jalisco. And you will find plenty of parking spaces in front of the shops. If you are driving northbound along the highway from Puerto Vallarta or points south, a left-hand exit right before Starbucks allows a U-turn.

We did just that—camera in hand to build a photo show-and-tell—hoping to entice you to do the same. A good strategy might be to park at the southernmost point (Rattan de Guadalajara), walk north along the plaza, cross the highway at the northernmost point for a coffee break at Starbucks and then return to your starting point.
