Εκεί γύρω στις πέντε το απόγευμα στα γραφεία της εφημερίδας «ΤΟ ΒΗΜΑ» στη Χρήστου Λαδά, τον Μάϊο του 2006, έφτασε στο γραφείο μου μια πρόσκληση από την Aegean Airlines για το τουρνουά γκολφ που διοργάνωνε στη Χερσόνησο της Κρήτης. Το μόνο που ήξερα μέχρι τότε για το γκολφ ήταν φυσικά ο Tiger Woods, o αγαπημένος μου ηθοποιός Στηβ Μακ Κουίν σε ένα φωτογραφικό άλμπουμ να παίζει γκολφ, και οι Rolling Stones που κοσμούσαν τους τοίχους του γραφείου μου, να παίζουν γκολφ στο Λονδίνο. Ποτέ δεν σκέφτηκα τι θα ακολουθούσε. Το Aegean Airlines ProAm με οδήγησε στο κόσμο του γκολφ. Τα μαθήματα γκολφ που έκανα σε εκείνο το πρώτο τουρνουά με το Χάρη Ζερβό και η τύχη του πρωτάρη να κτυπήσω ένα driver με τέτοια ακρίβεια, που ακόμα εκείνος ο ήχος που έκανε το μπαλάκι είναι ακόμα μέσα στο μυαλό μου, ήταν τα πρώτα δυνατά ερεθίσματα για να γίνω golf maniac.

Σε εκείνο το πρώτο Aegean Airlines ProAm άρχισε να δημιουργείται στο μυαλό μου το “Golf & Leisure Magazine”, και το Aegean Airlines ProAm έγινε η αφορμή να ακούγεται στα μέσα ενημέρωσης η λέξη: ΓΚΟΛΦ. Δέκα χρόνια μετά το Aegean Airlines ProAm, έχει καθιερωθεί πλέον ως ένα από τα καλύτερα της Ευρώπης. Έχει καταφέρει να βάλει την Ελλάδα στο παγκόσμιο χάρτη του γκολφ με πολλά ωφέλη σε πολλαπλά επίπεδα. Σε συνδυασμό με τουριστικές επενδύσεις όπως της Costa Navarino, έχει δημιουργήσει τις βάσεις για την ανάπτυξη της βιομηχανίας του γκολφ στη χώρα μας. Αποτελεί μιας πρώτης τάξεως τουριστική προβολή της Ελλάδας και μάλιστα ανέξοδη για το αρμόδιο υπουργείο, που θα μπορούσε να το έχει αξιοποιήσει σε μεγαλύτερο βαθμό.

ΥΓ. Λένε ότι το έγκλημα παραγράφεται μετά την δεκαετία ή όπως λέει ο λαός αμαρτία εξομολογουμένη ουκ έστιν αμαρτία. Λοιπόν μια τέτοια έχω και εγώ. Σε εκείνο το πρώτο τουρνουά της Κρήτης και τη πρώτη μου επαφή με το γκολφ, αγνοούσα τα πάντα περί κανονισμών και πως πρέπει να κινείσαι μέσα στο γήπεδο. Μου είχαν δώσει λοιπόν ένα buggy για να παρακολουθώ από κοντά τις ομάδες. Γυρνώντας στο γήπεδο βρίσκω μπροστά μου ένα μπαλάκι του γκολφ αριστερά από το path στην τρύπα Νο 6 στα Κρητικά γήπεδα γκολφ, Στο fairway ήταν η ομάδα του κυρίου Βασιλάκη. Μαζεύω λοιπόν το μπαλάκι ως λάφυρο και συνεχίζω την περιήγησή μου. Το βράδυ λοιπόν που συναντηθήκαμε όλοι κάποιος από την παρέα μας περιγράφει τον μυστηριώδη τρόπο που εξαφανίστηκε το μπαλάκι του κυρίου Βασιλάκη στη τρύπα Νο 6. Επιστρέφοντας στο δωμάτιο μου παρατήρησα ότι το λάφυρο μου είχε πάνω το μονόγραμμα “V”.

να από τα ακριβότερα Golf Club της Νέας Υόρκης. Βρίσκεται -που αλλού- στο κοσμοπολίτικο Hamptons. Η ετήσια συνδρομή του είναι $750.000 και μπορεί να πλησιάσει με επιπλέον παρoχές έως και $850.000 το χρόνο. Βρίσκεται μέσα στην παλιά πίστα αγώνων αυτοκινήτου που χρησιμοποιούσε συχνά ο Paul Newman για να δοκιμάσει τις αντοχές των αυτοκινήτων του. Ο ιδιοκτήτης του, Jeff Warne αποφάσισε να τη μετατρέψει σε ένα ιδιωτικό golf club και ανάθεσε το έργο στο γνωστό αρχιτέκτονα Rees Jones. O φουτουριστικός σχεδιασμός του golf club αλλά και o ιδιαίτερος σχεδιασμός του γηπέδου που εκμεταλλεύτηκε στο έπακρο και την ίδια τη πίστα των αγώνων, είναι ιδιαίτερα προκλητικός στους απαιτητικούς γκόλφερς. Δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι ο Robert Wilson έχει επιλέξει την εξαιρετική είσοδο του clubhouse για να παρουσιάσει μερικές από τις διάσημες θεατρικές παραγωγές του.

he Bridge is constructed on the site of famous car racetrack also called The Bridge, in operation until the mid-1990s and used by celebrities like Paul Newman. American popular culture associated with the racetrack, along with often whimsical remnants of the racetrack itself, has been included in the complex: billboards, neon signs, movie posters, a reproduction of the Porsche James Dean crashed in, and so on. In another quirky move, some of the interior walls were made of Corian. Robert Rubin, a financier who studied architectural history at Columbia and is owner of the Maison du Verre in Paris, also owns The Bridge. He has made it a highly unconventional, informal golf club, with no dress code and with social diversity. Famous artists like Richard Prince and Tom Sachs are both members and creators of some of the many contemporary artworks in the clubhouse. Robert Wilson has used the clubhouse’s dramatic service entrance as the setting for theatrical productions.

Πανελλήνιο Πρωτάθλημα Match Play 2015

Greek PGA, θα πρέπει να δοθεί ιδαίτερη έμφαση στην αξιοπιστία των αγώνων. Στα αξιοσημείωτα του τουρνουά η κατάρευση την δεύτερη μέρα μιας εμβληματικής παρουσία των γηπέδων γκολφ. Ο Σταμάτης “Hurricane” Χουρδάκης, ο «τυφώνας» των fairways, αποχώρησε από ύπουλο αλλεργικό χτύπημα. Σταμάτη περαστικά, περιμένουμε να επιστρέψεις δυνατός.

Πραγματοποιήθηκε στο γήπεδο γκολφ της Γλυφάδας από 16 έως και 19 Απριλίου το Πανελλήνιο Πρωτάθλημα Match Play, που διοργανώθηκε από την Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Γκολφ. Νικητής ο Νίκος Ευθυμιάδης μετά από ένα συναρπαστικό match play με τον Βασίλη Κουμπάκη

ραγματοποιήθηκε από 29 Απριλίου έως και 3 Μαϊου το παραδοσιακό πλέον ετήσιο γκολφικό ραντεβού των γκόλφερς, στη μαγευτική τοποθεσία του Porto Carras. Δυστυχώς η κατάσταση του γηπέδου τόσο στα greens όσο και στα fairways, δεν ήταν στη κατάσταση που έχουμε μάθει να παίζουμε τόσα χρόνια σε αυτό το πραγματικά εξαιρετικό γήπεδο. Τιτάνιες οι προσπάθεις του Γιώργου Χασάπη, Golf Director και τις ομάδας του για την όσο πιο ομαλή διεξαγωγή του τουρνουά. Ευχαριστούμε Γιώργο. Βέβαια θα πρέπει οι εμπλεκόμενοι να βοηθήσουν ο καθένας με τον τρόπο του για τη βελτίωση των συνθηκών για το 7th Porto Carras ProAm. ο αγαπημένο τουρνουά των Ελλήνων γκόλφερς και όχι μόνο, γιόρτασε τα 10 χρόνια διοργάνωσής του. Αγαπημένο γιατί ουσιαστικά σηματοδοτεί το τέλος της σεζόν αλλά και ένας ωραίος τρόπος να καλωσορίσεις το φθινόπωρο. Το τουρνουά πραγματοποιήθηκε με πλήρη επιτυχία στις εγκαταστάσεις του Porto Elounda Golf Club και του Crete Golf Club. Παρά το γεγονός ότι ο καιρός ιδιαίτερα την 2η μέρα δεν ήταν φιλικός καθώς ένα ξαφνικό μπουρίνι διέκοψε τις προσπάθειες των γκόλφερς. Για ακόμη μία φορά εξαιρετική η φιλοξενία της οικογένειας Κοκοτού, όπως και όλη η διοργάνωση υπό την καθοδήγηση του Αντώνη Σωτηρόπουλου, Golf Director του Porto Elounda Golf Club.

τo πλαίσιo της ατελείωτης αναζήτησης ενός τρόπου που θα κάνει το γκολφ διασκεδαστικό για εκείνους που δεν επιθυμούν να υποβληθούν στην δοκιμασία του να προσπαθούν να βάλουν μια μικρή μπάλα σε μια στρογγυλή τρύπα από απόσταση εκατοντάδων μέτρων, έχει αρχίσει στον αθλητικό κόσμο η άνθηση μιας νέας παραλλαγής. Συνήθως παίζεται σε γήπεδα γκολφ και οι παίκτες πρέπει να βάλουν τη μπάλα ποδοσφαίρου σε τρύπες των 53 εκατοστών χρησιμοποιώντας όσο το δυνατό λιγότερα χτυπήματα με το πόδι. Η καταγωγή του FootGolf δεν είναι ξεκάθαρη, αλλά η μετατροπή του σε επίσημο άθλημα μπορεί να αποδοθεί στην Ολλανδία όπου οριστικοποιήθηκαν οι κανόνες του, το 2009. Από τότε γίνεται όλο και πιο δημοφιλές ανά την υφήλιο και κάθε μέρα όλο και περισσότεροι οπαδοί του ποδοσφαίρου και του γκολφ επιλέγουν να αντικαταστήσουν το χτύπημα ενός μπαστουνιού με μια ωραία κλωτσιά. Σε αυτό το νέο άθλημα ακριβείας οι παίκτες πρέπει να κλωτσούν την μπάλα έως αυτή μπει μέσα σε υποδοχή με όσο το δυνατό λιγότερα χτυπήματα. Οι περισσότεροι κανόνες

αντιστοιχούν σε αυτούς του γκολφ και υπάρχει ακόμα και dress code. Σε μερικές χώρες το παιχνίδι επίσης περιλαμβάνει τεχνητά εμπόδια που δεν επιτρέπεται να ακουμπήσουν ή να μετακινήσουν οι παίκτες για να βάλουν τη μπάλα στην τρύπα. Οι παίκτες πρέπει να συνδυάσουν δυνατά σουτ με χτυπήματα στρατηγικής με σκοπό να ολοκληρώσουν το γήπεδο με τις 9 ή 18 τρύπες όσο μπορούν πιο γρήγορα. Οι βασικοί κανόνες είναι παρόμοιοι με το γκολφ: ξεκινάς κλωτσώντας πίσω από ένα tee marker. Έπειτα, ο παίκτης που βρίσκεται σε μεγαλύτερη απόσταση από την τρύπα κλωτσά πρώτος. Οι αριθμοί των χτυπημάτων που χρειάζονται για να βρεθεί η μπάλα στην τρύπα είναι το σκορ για αυτήν τρύπα. Τα σκορ στο FootGolf τείνουν να είναι παρόμοια με αυτά του γκολφ με par που κυμαίνονται από 3 έως 5 ανά τρύπα. Ωστόσο, από άλλες απόψεις το FootGolf είναι διαφορετικό —και πιο προσιτό. Χρειάζεται απλές μπάλες ποδοσφαίρου. Οι παίκτες δεν χρειάζεται να τις κλωτσήσουν σε απόσταση 180 μέτρων για να τις στείλουν στα μισά του fairway.

I

n the never-ending quest to make golf more enjoyable for those who do not wish to endure the frustration from trying to get a small ball into a round hole from hundreds of yards away, a new variation has started to blossom in the world of sports. It’s usually played on golf courses and players have to putt a football in 21-inch holes using as few kicks as possible.

The origins of FootGolf are unclear, but its conversion into an official sport can be attributed to the Netherlands, where the ruleset was standardized in 2009. Its popularity has expanded around the world ever since, and every day more and more football and golf fans choose to replace the club stroke with a good healthy kick. In this new precision sport, players are required to kick a football into a cup in as few shots as possible. Most of the rules correspond to those of golf, and there is even a dress code. The first shot has to be played from the tee, and obstacles like bunkers, trees, water and hills have to be avoided for an easier game. Players have to combine powerful kicks with strategic plays in order to complete the 9 or 18 hole course as fast as they can.

Some aspects are similar to golf, starting with the basic rules: You begin by kicking from behind a tee marker; after that, the player farthest from the hole kicks first. The number of kicks needed to reach the hole is your score on that hole. FootGolf scores tend to be similar to golf scores, with pars of 3 to 5 per hole. But in other ways, FootGolf is different — and more approachable. It uses regular soccer balls.

Players don’t have to kick them 200 yards to send them halfway down the fairway.

έκα χρόνια με αξέχαστες γκολφικές στιγμές, δέκα χρόνια Aegean Airlines ProAm, με συμμετέχοντες επαγγελματίες και ερασιτέχνες από κάθε σημείο της γης, που τίμησαν με την παρουσία και τη συμμετοχή τους τις ετήσιες διοργανώσεις του. Στη διάρκεια των 10 ετών, το AEGEAN Airlines Pro-Am φιλοξενήθηκε σε 4 διαφορετικά γήπεδα στην Ελλαδα και 1 στην Κύπρο. Πραγματοποιήθηκε για πρώτη φορά το 2006 στo γκολφ Χερσονήσου Κρήτης. Φιλοξένησε 51 ομάδες και 204 παίκτες από 13 χώρες. Το τουρνουά υλοποιήθηκε σύμφωνα με τα διεθνή οργανωτικά πρότυπα και στέφθηκε με μεγάλη επιτυχία. Μέχρι και το 2008 το τουρνουά φιλοξενήθηκε στο γήπεδο γκολφ Χερσονήσου Κρήτης. Είναι η διοργάνωση, που έβαλε την Ελλάδα στον παγκόσμιο χάρτη του αθλήματος και βοήθησε την ανάπτυξή του στη χώρα μας.Το 2009 το τουρνουά φιλοξενήθηκε στο Porto Carras Golf Resort στη Χαλκιδική, ενώ το 2010 και 2011 διοργανώθηκε στο The Dunes Course στη Costa Navarino στη Μεσσηνία. Το 2012 το τουρνουά επισκέφτκε την Κύπρο και το το Aphrodite Hills Golf Resort, για να επιστρέψει από το 2012 στην Costa Navarino και να φιλοξενηθεί για πρώτη

Το γκολφ είναι µια τέτοια παγκόσµια αγορά µε τεράστιο δυναµικό. Έχουν γίνει πολλές µελέτες που επαληθεύουν τον θετικό αντίκτυπο του αθλήµατος στην κοινωνία και την οικονοµία. Ειδικότερα ο αθλητικός τουρισµός στον τοµέα του γκολφ μειώνει την εποχικότητα, προσελκύει τουρίστες υψηλού επιπέδου που δαπανούν πολλά χρήµατα, ενισχύει την γκάµα και τη διαφοροποίηση των τουριστικών προορισμών και, κυρίως, βελτιώνει την εικόνα του προορισμού». Με αυτά τα λόγια ο Πρόεδρος της AEGEAN κ. Θεόδωρος Βασιλάκης, και Πρόεδρος της Οργανωτικής Επιτροπής του AEGEAN Pro-Am, συνοψίζει τους λόγους και τα κίνητρα πίσω από τη δεκαετή προσπάθειά του να καθιερώσει τη διοργάνωση που ξεκίνησε το 2006 σε μία από τις σημαντικότερες διεθνώς, με μεγάλη επιτυχία και υψηλή αναγνωρισιμότητα.

H φετινή 10η επετειακή διοργάνωση θα πραγματοποιηθεί στα γήπεδα της Costa Navarino (The Dunes, The Bay Course), τα οποία, στα

ελάχιστα χρόνια λειτουργίας τους, έχουν λάβει πολλές διεθνείς διακρίσεις. Σύμμαχος θα είναι το υπέροχο ελληνικό κλίµα, που ευνοεί όσο σε καµία άλλη χώρα της Ευρώπης το γκολφ σχεδόν όλους τους µήνες του χρόνου, κάτι που αποτελεί από µόνο του πόλο έλξης για τους γκόλφερ που συμμετέχουν στη φετινή διοργάνωση από κάθε σημείο της Γης (Ευρώπη, ΗΠΑ, Χαβάη, Ν. Αφρική, Ηνωμένα Εμιράτα κ.α.). Οι εγγραφές των 63 ομάδων έχουν ήδη ολοκληρωθεί. Οι επαγγελματίες παίκτες θα αγωνιστούν διεκδικώντας σε επαγγελμα-τικό επίπεδο 72.000 ευρώ, το υψηλότερο prize fund της Ευρώπης σε αγώνα Pro-Am για επαγγελματίες. Παρών θα είναι και φέτος ο πολυνίκης της διοργάνωσης Nicolo Gaggero, που ήδη έχει κατακτήσει τρεις φορές την πρώτη θέση (2011, 2013, 2014), ο Zeke Martinez, που ήδη έχει κατακτήσει 5 φορές μία θέση στις 6 πρώτες νικήτριες ομάδες του Pro-Am και θέση νικητή και Runner up, και ο Liam Bond, 3 φορές Runner Up στα δέκα έτη! Κάθε χρόνο, μέρος των εσόδων του τουρνουά προσφέρεται σε φιλανθρωπικά ιδρύματα που στηρίζουν ευπαθείς ομάδες ή προάγουν τον πολιτισμό (Παιδικά Χωριά SOS, Ίδρυμα «Ηλιαχτίδα» για παιδιά με καρκίνο, Εταιρεία Μεσσηνιακών Αρχαιολογικών Σπουδών κ.ά.). Το συνολικό ποσό που έχει διατεθεί από το 2006 είναι 88.000 ευρώ. Φέτος η AEGEAN θα προσφέρει το ποσό των 8.000 ευρώ στην ΕΛΠΙΔΑ, Σύλλογο Φίλων Παιδιών με καρκίνο. Η AEGEAN αποτελεί από το 2011 τον «προτιµώµενο αεροµεταφορέα» της The PGAs of Europe, µεταφέροντας τους επαγγελµατίες παίκτες της PGAs of Europe µε ειδικές τιµές και προνόµια. hese have been 10 years of unforgettable golfing moments shared by participants, professionals and amateurs from all over the world who have honoured AEGEAN Airlines Pro-Am events with their presence.

Over the 10-year period, we have hosted the AEGEAN Airlines Pro-Am tournament at four different venues in as many regions, nine times in Greece and once in Cyprus. The AEGEAN Airlines Pro-Am was initially staged at the Crete Golf Club in Hersonissos for three consecutive years from 2006 to 2008. The tournament emerged as an innovative idea and pioneering sporting event for its time in Greece, hosting 51 teams and 204 players from 13 countries in its first edition.

Placing Greece on the sport’s international map, the tournament went on to be staged at prominent golf resorts throughout Greece, namely the Porto Carras Grand Resort in Halkidiki in 2009, followed by two years, 2010 and 2011, at the Dunes Course at the then newly established Costa Navarino in Messinia, and the Aphrodite Hills Golf Resort in Cyprus in 2012, before returning to Costa Navarino for the 2013 and 2014 events, on two golf courses for the first time, the Dunes Course and The Bay Course.

last year’s AEGEAN Airlines Challenge Tour, a European Tour event, staged July 3 to 7 at the Hartl Resort in Bad Griesbach, Germany, will be included in the tournament’s roster of 62 professionals.

AEGEAN has confirmed its dynamic role over the past decade in supporting the development of Greek tourism, as well as its efforts to familiarise Greeks with the sport by promoting the golf culture and backing facilities, the overall objective being to bolster Greece’s tourism industry and economy.

Commenting on the event’s 10-year course to date, PGAs of Europe Chief Executive Ian Randell noted: “For the event to have reached such a milestone is a huge feat and is a product of a vast amount of effort from Mr Vassilakis and his AEGEAN

Airlines team. Their dedication to the sport has proven itself across the past decade and we are looking forward to celebrating this in June.”

Football & Golf This year, in association with the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) and top-tier Superleague players, we will organise, for the first time in Greece, the 1st FootGolf Tournament powered by AEGEAN Airlines, on June 20, 2015, at the Dunes Course (3.30 p.m.). A total of 24 renowned footballers and VIPs will take part.

Each year a share of the Pro-Am tournament’s proceeds is given to charities that support vulnerable social groups or promote culture, such as SOS

Children’s Villages, the Iliachtida Foundation for children with cancer, and the Society of Messenian Archaeological Studies. A total of 88,000 euros has been donated to charities since 2006.

This year, AEGEAN will donate 8,000 euros to the ELPIDA Association of Friends of Children with Cancer. Since 2011, AEGEAN has been classified as the “preferred air carrier” of the PGAs of Europe, offering specially priced air travel and benefits to the circuit’s professionals. Furthermore, since 2007, AEGEAN has served as the official air carrier for PGA Greece and the Hellenic Golf Federation, as well as the Cyprus Golf Federation, providing free air travel to our country’s professional golfers, as well as all children at golf club academies, to facilitate participation in competition and training.

Η γνώση ήταν περιορισμένη αλλά το όνειρο μας ήταν δυνατό και υιοθετήθηκε από όλους μας εδώ στην Aegean. Σήμερα δύσκολα συνειδητοποιούμε πως γιορτάζουμε την 10η επέτειο αλλά πιστεύουμε ακράδαντα πως έχουμε πετύχει το στόχο μας ενώ παράλληλα η προθυμία μας για περαιτέρω κατορθώματα σχετικά με το γκολφ γίνεται όλο και πιο έντονη. Έχουμε κάνει φίλους μας εκατοντάδες φανατικούς παίκτες του γκολφ από όλον τον κόσμο και το Aegean Airlines Pro-Am έχει εδραιωθεί ως ένα από τα καλύτερα στην Ευρώπη. t seems like yesterday when back in late 2005, we took the initiative in an effort to begin promoting Golf in Greece. The knowledge was limited but our dream was strong and adopted by all of us at Aegean. Today, we can hardly believe that we are celebrating our 10th anniversary, but we firmly believe we have achieved our target, while our eagerness for further achievements in the development of golf continues to grow stronger.

We have made hundreds of fanatic golfer friends

from all over the world and the Aegean Airlines ProAm has been established as one of the best in Europe.

The endorsement of the PGAs of Europe and the continuous support of the main official golf associations in Greece and in Cyprus i.e. the Hellenic Golf Federation, the PGA of Greece and the Cyprus Golf Federation, give us a lot of encouragement. Our special thanks to all of them!

We strongly believe that this significant ProAm will offer numerous benefits to our society and to tourism in our country. For ten years: ■■Golfers have been travelling every June to meet at one of our venues in order to experience high quality golf facilities and services in the aviation and hotels sector.

■■We have hosted more than 500 teams, more than 2,000 players from 22 different

he 10th Aegean Airlines ProAm is commemorating its largest celebratory event since our tournament began, as it marks the completion of 10 years of successful events, promotion of our country and its golf venues, as well as the hosting of over 4,000 players, contributors, VIPS and sponsors!

The emotions and memories are sure to be too many to count, but we look forward to sharing them with our favourite participants and supporters. It is truly incredible that the 1st Aegean Airlines ProAm (2006) at Hersonissos on Crete was the brainchild and inspiration of our President, Mr Theodore Vassilakis, and that the initially small group of players and tournament have evolved and grown on every level in the last decade.

The 10th Aegean Airlines ProAm will be held between the 17th and 21st of June at the incredible Costa Navarino resort in Messinias, and we are proud of the both the quality of the golf courses themselves as well as high level of accommodation services offered.

We are humbled by the interest and interaction of the players, who come from 20 countries including Italy, Germany, Israel, the USA, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden and for the first time, Hawaii!

The 10th Aegean Airlines ProAm will host 62 teams, more than any other year, and professional competitors will battle it out for a 72,000 Euro total prize fund!

Because we believe the promotion of golf is best achieved when it is combined with other popular sports such as football, we are organising the 1st FootGolf Event powered by Aegean on the Dunes Course, which will bring together 24 international players from the Hellenic Football Federation, the Super League and representatives of world football. Moreover, the 10th Aegean Airlines ProAm will welcome Greek artist Sakis Rouvas, who has an international reputation, is a golf enthusiast and ambassador for the ELPIDA (hope in Greek) charity. His participation in the tournament and involvement with golf itself are sure to contribute to the effective promotion of the sport.

As in previous years, the tournament is once again sanctioned by the PGAs of Europe and is held under the auspices of the PGA of Greece and the Hellenic and Cyprus Golf Federations. They are the official organisations of golf (professional and amateur) and have lent their prestige and integrity to the Aegean Airlines ProAm since day one!

σχέση μας με την Aegean Airlines ξεκίνησε με τη διοργάνωση του τουρνουά στην Κρήτη το 2006. Ήταν η αφορμή για τον κ. Βασιλάκη και την ομάδα του να μπούν στον χώρο του γκόλφ χωρίς να διαθέτουν την κατάλληλη εμπειρία για τη διοργάνωση ενός τέτοιου τουρνουά, αλλά είχαν πολύ μεγάλη θέληση και αποφασιστικότητα. Η επιθυμία τους να δημιουργήσουν ένα υψηλών προδιαγραφών τουρνουά γκολφ στην Ελλάδα που να συνάδει με τις υψηλές προδιαγραφές της Aegean Airlines, είχε ως αποτέλεσμα το Aegean Airlines ProAm να καθιερωθεί ως ένα από τα καλύτερα τουρνουά του PGAs of Εurope ή όπως εμείς λέμε «Τhe June Pro-Am in Greece». Σε αυτά τα 10 χρόνια έχουν δημιουργηθεί πολλές φιλίες τόσο εντός αλλά όσο και εκτός γηπέδου, με τους παίκτες να επιστρέφουν κάθε χρόνο στο Aegean Airlines ProAm για να απολαύσουν και να μοιραστούν τη γνωστή φιλοξενία και την εμπειρία που τους προσφέρει το τουρνουά. s we look back to the start of our relationship with Aegean Airlines in Crete, Mr Vassilakis and his team entered the world of professional golf with anticipation and determination but little experience of golfing events of this scale. Their desire to make a difference to golf in Greece and stage an event in keeping with the high standards of their airline resulted in the Aegean Airlines Pro-Am very quickly establishing itself as a highlight of our calendar and a not-to-bemissed date each summer.

Over the past 10 years many friendships have been built both on and off the golf course with competitors returning year on year to share in the fabulous golfing experience and social events for which the Aegean Airlines Pro-Am has become renowned.

We are extremely proud of our involvement and the strength of the relationships that have been built with an organisation and individuals who share the same goals as we do for our Association. It is a privilege to be a part of an event that is both so successful and so enjoyable.

ο 10ο Aegean Airlines ProAm είναι γεγονός! Μία διοργάνωση που ξεκίνησε το 2006 ως πρώτο σταθμό τα Κρητικά Γκολφ, με εμπνευστή τον πρόεδρο της εταιρείας κ. Θεόδωρο Βασιλάκη ξεπερνάει φέτος κάθε προσδοκία! Στο οδοιπορικό των 10 ετών πήγαμε στο Porto Carras αλλά και στην Κύπρο στο Aphrodite Hills! Η φετινή επετειακή διοργάνωση με τις 62 ομάδες, συνολικά 248 παίκτες από διάφορες χώρες, που φιλοξενείται στα δύο γήπεδα του Costa Navarino, καταρρίπτει κάθε ρεκόρ, κάθε προσδοκία και αποτελεί πρότυπο για ανάλογες διοργανώσεις στο μέλλον. This year, the tournament that was first held on the Crete golf course and was the brainchild of Mr Theodore Vassilakis, President of Aegean Airlines, exceeds all expectations! In the past 10 years, the event has been held at Porto Carras in northern Greece and Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus! The 10th annual tournament will host 62 teams and a total of 248 players from different

countries at the two golf courses of the Costa Navarino resort, shattering every record and is sure to act as a model for similar events in the future. The Aegean Airlines ProAm has successfully established a powerful brand name in the world of golf, synonymous with Aegean Airlines, and definitely ranks among the top PGA events in Europe. The man behind the games, Mr Theodore Vassilakis, and his team must be congratulated, as they work tirelessly together to successfully host the Aegean Airlines ProAm each year. Είναι το γκολφ ένα άθλημα που βοηθά την πειθαρχία; Το γκολφ είναι ένα άθλημα, το οποίο προϋποθέτει την ισορροπία πνευματικής και σωματικής άσκησης. Πότε ξεκινήσατε να ασχολείστε με το γκολφ; Στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 90. Ποιές ήταν οι πρώτες σας εντυπώσεις; Εντυπωσιάστηκα! Γιατί παρόλο που ήμουν αθλητής, με πολλές ώρες εξάσκησης, λάτρης των extreme sports, διαπίστωσα ότι το γκολφ ήταν ένα ιδιαίτερα απαιτητικό άθλημα πολλών επιπέδων. Είναι ένα άθλημα ακρίβειας, είναι τρόπος ζωής, τρόπος έκφρασης. Σου δίνει την ευκαιρία να αξιοποιήσεις και να συνδυάσεις παράλληλα νου, ψυχή και σώμα. Πως θα το χαρακτηρίζατε σαν άθλημα και γιατί; Στρατηγικό. Απαιτεί στρατηγική σκέψη και προσήλωση και αυτό προσωπικά μου αρέσει πολύ! Για πολλούς το γκολφ είναι ελιτίστικο άθλημα. Τι πιστεύετε; Αυτό δεν ισχύει και καταγράφεται και από την ύπαρξη ακαδημιών γκολφ με εκατοντάδες παιδιά σε όλη την Ελλάδα. Γεγονός που αποδεικνύει την αγάπη προς το άθλημα. Όταν παίζετε γκολφ ρισκάρετε ή παίζετε εκ του ασφαλούς; Εξαρτάται κάθε φορά από το τι θέλεις να πετύχεις. Μερικές φορές σε συνεπαίρνει το παιχνίδι και θέλεις να ξεπεράσεις τον εαυτό σου, να δοκιμάσεις τα όρια σου και τότε ρισκάρεις. Αυτό βέβαια απαιτεί καθαρό μυαλό και καλό course management. Αγαπημένος σας γκολφικός προορισμός; Έχω επισκεφτεί στην Ελλάδα τα γήπεδα της Costa Navarino όσο και το γκολφ της Χερσονήσου στη Κρήτη, τα οποία έχουν άρτια υποδομή σύμφωνα με τα διεθνή πρότυπα. Επίσης τα γήπεδα της Κέρκυρας και της Ρόδου θα μπορούσαν να αξιοποιηθούν με τις ανάλογες επενδύσεις και να γίνουν και αυτά διεθνής πόλος έλξης γκόλφερ.

Τι θα προτείνατε να γίνει για το γκολφ στην Ελλάδα; Κατά τη χειμερινή περίοδο οι γκόλφερ στην κεντρική και βόρεια Ευρώπη, όπως γνωρίζετε, ψάχνουν προορισμούς. Η Ελλάδα έχει το κατάλληλο κλίμα και περιβάλλον να γίνει ένας μοναδικός προορισμός για το γκολφ ακόμα και 12 μήνες το χρόνο. Χρειάζεται βέβαια μια εθνική στρατηγική προσέγγιση, σε συνδυασμό με τη δυνατότητα νέων επιχειρηματικών επενδύσεων. Το γκολφ μπορεί να συμβάλει στην ενίσχυση της Ελλάδας ως ένας ιδανικός γκολφ προορισμός που θα αναβαθμίσει κοινωνικά και ποιοτικά και θα προσφέρει νέες θέσεις εργασίας . Στην εποχή της τεχνολογίας, πόσο εύκολο πιστεύετε πως είναι για τα παιδιά να αποτραβηχτούν από τις οθόνες και να ασχο-

των σε σχέση με τον αθλητισμό γιατί σίγουρα δε φτάνει μόνο η οικογένεια. Ποιές είναι οι προτεραιότητες στη ζωή σας; Η οικογένειά μου, τα όνειρα μου, οι στόχοι που βάζω κάθε φορά και προσπαθώ να υλοποιήσω.

H επιτυχία είναι το ζητούμενο στη ζωή σας; Πάντα ήθελα να δοκιμάζω νέα πράγματα, νέες προκλήσεις, να ψάχνω τα όρια μου. Η ανάγκη για να ανακαλύψω εμένα τον ίδιο και τι μπορώ να κάνω βρίσκεται πίσω από κάθε μου βήμα. Μου αρέσει να μη μένω στάσιμος, να βελτιώνομαι και να εξελίσσομαι. Τι σας δίδαξε η ενασχόλησή σας με την ΕΛΠΙΔΑ; Μου διδάσκει και μου προσφέρει καθημερινά πολλά και ουσιαστικά. Έχει μεγάλη αξία να ζήσεις από κοντά την εμπειρία στον Ξενώνα του Συλλόγου Φίλων Παιδιών με Καρκίνο «ΕΛΠΙΔΑ» και της Ογκολογικής Μονάδας Παίδων «Μαριάννα Β. Βαρδινογιάννη – Ελπίδα» όπως και να γίνεις εθελοντής στο «Όραμα Ελπίδας». Κάθε φορά που τα συναντώ μόνα τους είτε μαζί με τους γονείς τους παίρνω δύναμη από τη δική τους δύναμη με τον αγώνα για ζωή. Πως αισθάνεστε που θα πάρετε μέρος στο επετειακό Διεθνές Τουρνουά, 10th Aegean ProAm; Φέτος θα συμμετέχω ως παίκτης στο 10th Aegean ProAm, το οποίο έχει προσφέρει τόσα πολλά στο γκόλφ. Χαίρομαι διπλά που φέτος το επετειακό διεθνές τουρνουά μαζί με άλλες 62 ομάδες από 20 χώρες θα προσφέρει στo Σύλλογο «Ελπίδα» και Όραμα Ελπίδας. Μάλιστα η ομάδα που θα αγωνιστώ θα ονομαστεί «Ελπίδα» και θα αποτελείται από τους: Γιώργο Διάκου, Πίτερ Πάππας και τη Ρένα Παπαδοπούλου. Επίσης χαίρομαι διότι θα συμμετέχω με 23 διεθνείς ποδοσφαιριστές, αλλά και top class παίκτες από την ελληνική Super League στο πρώτο Foot Golf που διοργανώνεται στην Ελλάδα. Ανυπομονώ βέβαια και είμαι ενθουσιασμένος που θα λάβω μέρος σε αυτή τη σημαντική διοργάνωση. Μεγαλώνοντας χάνουμε τον αυθορμητισμό της νιότης. Σε ποια κομμάτια της ζωής σας διατηρείτε τον ίδιο παρορμητισμό και σε ποια λειτουργεί πλέον η ωριμότητα της εμπειρίας; Ο αθλητισμός με κάνει να νιώθω έφηβος, δυνατός, η σκηνή, ελεύθερος. Όταν όμως βρισκόμαστε με την Κάτια μαζί με την Αναστασία, τον Αλέξανδρο και την Αριάδνη γινόμαστε κι εμείς παιδιά μαζί τους. Συναισθήματα που δεν θέλω να χάσω ποτέ.

νωρίζουμε όλοι πως ασχολείστε από μικρός με τον αθλητισμό, που είναι και το αντίβαρο πολλών για τα παιδιά. Σε ποια συγκεκριμένα επίπεδα σας βοήθησε προσωπικά; Ο αθλητισμός συμβάλει καθοριστικά στο κομμάτι της πειθαρχίας, θέτεις νέους στόχους, τους οποίους ορίζεις και καλείσαι να πετύχεις. Η ευγενής άμυλα στον αθλητισμό και στον πρωταθλητισμό σε βάζει σε μια διαδικασία ουσιαστικής και έμπρακτης αυτοβελτίωσης.

ou have loved sports since you were very young and many children use sport as an outlet for excess energy. How did sports help you personally? Sports helped me become more disciplined, set new goals and then achieve them.

The concept of fair play in sports and championship events encourage effective and practical self-improvement.

Is golf a sport that instils discipline?

Golf is a sport that demands a balance between intellect and physical activity.

How could golf be promoted in Greece?

Golfers from central and northern Europe seek out new golf destinations in winter. Greece has the perfect climate and environment to become a unique golf destination 12 months a year. Needless to say, a national strategic approach in conjunction with potential new business investment is required

What has your association with ELPIDA (hope in Greek) taught you? It teaches me and exposes me to new things every day. The ELPIDA Association of Friends of Children with Cancer and the Marianna V. Vardinogiannis - Elpida Oncological Centre for Children are worth experiencing first hand – as is volunteering with Elpida Vision. Whenever I meet sick children, either alone or with their families, I draw strength from their will to live.

What was your first impression of the sport? I was impressed! Although I was an athlete, with many hours of training under my belt, as well as a lover of extreme sports, I soon came to the realisation that golf was a very demanding sport on several levels. It is a precision sport, a way of life and a form of expression. It gives you the opportunity to fully utilise and merge the mind, body and soul.

How would you characterise it as a sport? Strategic. It requires strategic thinking and commitment, and that is why I like it!

Many consider golf an elitist sport. What do you think? That isn’t true, and is moreover disproven by the fact that there are golf academies with hundreds of young members peppered throughout Greece. This demonstrates a love of the sport.

Do you have a favourite golf course? In Greece, I have golfed at Costa Navarino and Hersonissos on Crete, both of which have excellent infrastructure in line with international standards.

With some investment, the courses on Corfu and Rhodes could also become international golf destinations.

What are your priorities in life? My family, my dreams, and the goals I set and try to achieve.

Is success important to you? I have always wanted to try new things, face new challenges and push my limits. The need to understand myself and what I am capable of is a driving force. I like moving forward, continually improving and evolving.

When did you first start playing golf?

In the 90s.

When golfing, do you gamble or play it safe? It depends on the situation and what I want to achieve. There are times when you are absorbed by the game and you want to surpass yourself, to push your limits and take risks. This demands a clear mind and good course management.

How does it feel to be participating in the 10th Annual International Aegean ProAm? This year I will actually be playing in the 10th Aegean ProAm, which has made such a great contribution to golf. I am doubly thrilled that this landmark international tournament and the 62 teams from 20 countries taking part, will be giving back to the Elpida Association and Elpida Vision.

In fact, my team is called Elpida and my teammates include Giorgos Diakou, Peter Pappas and Rena Papadopoulou.

I am also pleased to be taking part in the Greek Super League, the first FootGolf tournament to be organised in Greece, with 23 international football players and top class golfers. I look forward to and am excited to be participating in this important event.

As we get older, we lose the spontaneity of youth. When do you act impulsively and when does the maturity of experience take over? Sport makes me feel like a strong adolescent, the stage gives me freedom. But when my wife Katia and I are with Anastasia, Alexandros and Ariadne, we become children like them. That is a feeling I never want to lose.

ι γυναίκες μας εμπνέουν για τα ωραιότερα πράγματα και μετά μας εμποδίζουν να τα κάνουμε» είναι μια χαρακτηριστική φράση του λόρδου Χένρι στο έργο του Όσκαρ Ουάιλντ «Το πορτραίτο τοτ Ντόριαν Γκρέϊ». Δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι ένας άλλος ήρωας του Ουάιλντ, ο λόρδος Ντάρλιγκτον, ήταν ο πρώτος θεατρικός ρόλος του Αντώνη Βουράκη, του γνωστού επιτυχημένου επιχειρηματία κοσμημάτων.

O Αντώνης Βουράκης, κοσμηματοπώλης τρίτης γενιάς ενός από τους μεγαλύτερους και παλαιότερους ελληνικούς οίκους κοσμημάτων δεν είναι ένας συνηθισμένος επιχειρηματίας. Πληθωρικός χαρακτήρας, έντονη προσωπικότητα μας μιλά για γκολφ και θέατρο. Τι σημαίνει αθλητισμός για εσάς; Το σώμα μας είναι κατασκευασμένο για να αθλείται. Συνεπώς αθλητισμός για μένα σημαίνει πρώτα απ' όλα υγεία και μετά όλα τα υπόλοιπα. Πότε ασχοληθήκατε για πρώτη φορά με το γκολφ; Ξεκίνησα να ασχολούμαι το 2005.

Tα συναισθήματα σας τη πρώτη φορά που παίξατε; Το θεώρησα εύκολα αλλά το ίδιο φρόντισε να με διαψεύσει. Υπάρχει κάτι που σας εκνευρίζει στο παιχνίδι; Ναι, όταν δεν καταφέρνω ένα κτύπημα για το οποίο αποκλειστικά υπεύθυνος είμαι εγώ. Αυτό οφείλετε είτε σε δικό μου λάθος είτε στη έλλειψη συγκέντρωσης και πειθαρχίας στο παιχνίδι. Το γκολφ σε ξεγελά όταν το παρακολουθείς. Είναι εξαιρετικά απαιτητικό άθλημα που χαρακτηριστικό του είναι η πειθαρχία και η αυτοσυγκέντρωση στο σκοπό. Με μια λέξη πως θα το χαρακτηρίζατε; Αυτοσυγκέντρωση. Θα μπορούσε το γκολφ να είναι ένας πολύτιμος λίθος που να κοσμεί τον ποιοτικό τουρισμό μας? Απόλυτα. Γιατί δεν είναι? Γιατί είμαστε παγκόσμια προτοτυπία. Αλήθεια από πού είστε? Γεννήθηκα στην Αθήνα αλλά η καταγωγή μου είναι από τα Χανιά. Πως είσασταν σαν παιδί; Άτακτος άτακτος και άτακτος. Σε καυγάδες μπλέκατε; Βέβαια. Εδώ καυγαδίζω ακόμα και τώρα στα ...ήντα. Τι ομάδα είστε; Καταπράσινος, στεναχωρημένος αλλά φίλαθλος και όχι εμπαθής. Τι θυμάστε έντονα από την παιδική σας ηλικία; Τήν τριετία που ανεξήγητα έμεινα εσωτερικός στο σχολείο, το οποίο βέβαια μου έκανε καλό. Με το κόσμημα πως ασχοληθήκατε; Μέσα στό κόσμημα "γεννήθηκα" Είμαι τρίτη γενιάκοσμηματοπώλης.

To θέατρο πως προέκυψε; Τυχαία. Αποδεικνύεται όμως ότι καθυστέρησα να ασχοληθώ. Αλλά κάλλιο αργά παρά ποτέ.

H ηθοποϊία σας βoηθά να εκφραστείτε; Είναι τρόπος έκφρασης. Για μένα ο καλύτερος. Ποιος είναι ο πρώτος ρόλος που παίξατε; Τον λόρδο Ντάρλιγκτον στο έργο του Όσκαρ Ουάιλντ «Η βεντάλια της λαίδης Ουίντερμηρ». Πείτε μου έναν φόβο σας; Δεν φοβάμαι κάτι συγκεκριμένο. Φοβάμαι όπως όλοι το αναπάντεχο.

Γιατί έχουν ανάγκη οι άνθρωποι την τέχνη; Για να εκφράζονται Το γκολφ θα λέγατε ότι είναι "τέχνη"; Το γκολφ είναι επιστήμη. Φέτος το Aegean Airlines ProAm γιορτάζει τη 10η διοργάνωσή του. Έχετε συμμετάσχει σε όλες τις διοργανώσεις. Μπορείτε να μας πείτε στιγμές που θυμάστε στη διάρκεια της δεκάχρονης πορείας του; Είναι πολλές οι αναμνήσεις που ίσως δεν θα υπάρξει χώρος για να τις αναφέρουμε. Μπορώ να σας πώ όμως οτι περιμένω με ανυπομονησία κάθε χρόνο το επόμενο τουρνουά. Στο σημείο αυτό θα ήθελα να αναφερθώ σε έναν άνθρωπο ο οποίος έχει "δώσει" τόσα γι αυτό το άθλημα, κοινώς την ψυχή του, όσο κανένας άλλος. Ο Θόδωρος Βασιλάκης έβαλε στόχο καί κατάφερε και διεθνοποίησε τα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια το ελληνικό γκόλφ, μέσα από το επιτυχημένο τουρνουά “Aegean Airlines ProAm”. Kάτι που έπρεπε να έχει κάνει η πολιτεία. Eύχομαι δε να μην βρεθεί κάποιος να ισχυρισθεί οτι o Βασιλάκης διοργανώνει το τουρνουά δέκα χρόνια, για προσωπικό όφελος. Το διοργανώνει για όλους μας. Ακόμα και γι αυτούς που δεν ξέρουν τι είναι γκολφ και να τους κάνει να ασχοληθούν με αυτό. Μήπως κάνω λάθος; Ποιο είναι το ωραιότερο πράγμα που έχουν δει τα μάτια σας και το ωραιότερο που έχουν ακούσει τ' αφτιά σας; Την Ελλάδα μας με όλες τις φυσικές ομορφιές της.

It’s no coincidence that Antonis Vourakis, a renowned and successful jewellery entrepreneur, chose to portray Lord Darlington, another iconic Wilde hero in his first theatrical role.

Antonis Vourakis, third generation jeweller from one of the largest and oldest Greek jewellery houses, is not a run-of-the-mill businessman.

Exuberant by nature and with a strong personality, he sat down to discuss golf and theatre with us.

How do you feel about sport? Our bodies are made for sport. For me, sport is health first and then everything else.

When did you first start playing golf?

In 2005.

How did you feel the first time you played? I thought it would be easy, but it proved me wrong.

Is there something about the game that annoys you? Yes, that I am the only one to blame when I don’t hit the ball well. It’s either due to a mistake or lack of concentration and discipline in the game. Golf looks deceptively easy to those watching. It is an extremely demanding sport that demands discipline and concentration.

Pick one word that describes it.

Concentration.

Could golf be considered a precious jewel in quality Greek tourism? Absolutely.

Why isn’t it? Because we are a global novelty.

Where are you from? I was born in Athens but my family is from Chania, Crete.

What were you like as a child? Naughty, naughtier and naughtiest.

Did you get into fights? Of course. Even at ****ty, I still fight.

Which team do you support? I’m green to the core (Panathinaikos), a bit of a sad fan at the moment but never a rabid one.

What do you remember about your childhood? The three years I was inexplicably sent to boarding school, which actually did me a lot of good.

How did you come to be a jeweller? I was “born” in jewels – I’m a third generation jeweller.

And how did you get involved in theatre?

By chance. But it turns out that I should have done it earlier. Better late than never, though.

Does acting help you express yourself?

It is a form of expression. The best form of expression as far as I am concerned.

Tell us about your first role. I will be portraying Lord Darlington in Oscar Wilde’s “Lady Windermere’s Fan”.

Do you have any fears? Not any specific fears, but I do fear the unexpected.

Why do people need art? To express themselves.

Do you believe golf is an “art”? Golf is a science.

The Aegean ProAm is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. You have participated in every tournament. Could you tell us about some of your memories from the past ten years? There are so many that we won’t have enough room for them all. However, I can tell you that I look forward to it each year and eagerly await the following year’s tournament.

I would like to take this opportunity to mention a man who has given his heart and soul to the sport, more so than any other. Theodoros Vasilakis had a dream of internationalising Greek golf and managed to do so through the successful Aegean Airlines ProAm tournament. The State should have played a more active role. I hope that no one believes that Vasilakis organised the tournament for personal gain. He organises it for all of us. Even for those who don’t know what golf is and who don’t play. And I know I’m not wrong.

What is the nicest thing you have ever seen and heard? Greece, with all its natural beauty.

Τσι Τσι Ροντρίγκεζ είναι ένας από τους μεγάλους μάγους του γκολφ από την εποχή που πρωτοέφτιαξε ένα μπαστούνι γκολφ από το κλαδί ενός δέντρου γκουάβα. Ωστόσο, παρ’ όλες τις επιτυχίες του ως παίκτης, η συμβολή του ως αθλητή και ως ανθρωπιστή είναι ακόμα σπουδαιότερη. Από το διάσημο χορό σπαθιών που ξεκινά όταν κάνει ένα putt μέχρι την επιτυχία του ιδρύματος νέων του, ο Ροντρίγκεζ έχει κάνει τον κόσμο ένα καλύτερο μέρος. Γεννημένος στο Ρίο Πέντρας του Πουέρτο Ρίκο στις 23 Οκτωβρίου του 1935, ο Χουάν Ροντρίγκεζ ήταν το πιο φιλάσθενο ανάμεσα σε έξι αδέλφια και μάλιστα κόντεψε να πεθάνει σε ηλικία τεσσάρων ετών από ραχίτιδα και από ένα είδος τροπικής εντεροπάθειας. Ο πατέρας του εργαζόταν πολλές ώρες κόβοντας ζαχαροκάλαμα με μασσέτα αλλά δεν έβγαλε ποτέ στη ζωή του πάνω από 18 δολάρια την εβδομάδα, έτσι ο νεαρός Ροντρίγκεζ είδε στον αθλητισμό μια ευκαιρία για μια καλύτερη ζωή. Ως έφηβος, έπαιζε μποξ στο δρόμο, με αναψυκτικά ως ανταμοιβή, ενώ στο μπέιζμπολ ήταν αρκετά καλός πίτσερ ώστε να παίξει πλάι στους Ρομπέρτο Κλεμέντε, Ορλάντο Σεπέντα και τον τοπικό θρύλο Τσι Τσι Φλόρες του οποίου και το όνομα πήρε.

Caddie από την ηλικία των οκτώ, ο Ροντρίγκεζ είχε μια φυσική ικανότητα στο να χτυπά μια μπάλα του γκολφ, όταν είχε μία, ή ένα στρογγυλεμένο τενεκεδάκι όταν δεν είχε. Μετά από μια διετή θητεία στον στρατό επέστρεψε ως κάντι στο Dorado Beach Resort και στην ηλικία των 17 ήρθε δεύτερος στο Puerto Rican Open. Με τη βοήθεια του Πητ Κούπερ, ενός έμπειρου επαγγελματία του γκολφ, ο Ροντρίγκεζ συνέχισε να βελτιώνεται και το 1960 εξασφάλισε χρηματοδότηση ύψους 12.000 δολαρίων από τον Λόρενς Ροκεφέλερ, έναν από τους ιδιοκτήτες του θέρετρου. Ο Ροντρίγκεζ στη πρώτη του συμμετοχή σε PGA Tour, κέρδισε 450 δολάρια και έτσι ξεκίνησε η σταδιοδρομία του. Έχει ειπωθεί πως ο Τσι Τσι Ροντρίγκεζ είναι κατά αναλογία ο παίκτης με το μακρύτερο χτύπημα στην ιστορία του γκολφ. Με ύψος 1,52 και βάρος 60 κιλά, ο νευρώδης Πορτορικάνος έχει ανά καιρούς στείλει την μπάλα σε απόσταση πάνω από 320 μέτρα. Έχει δε υπάρξει σταθερά πάνω από τα 230 μέτρα σε όλη τη διάρκεια της καριέρας του. Ως παίκτης, ήταν μοναδικός. Εξαιρετικά λεπτός με ύψος 1,52 και βάρος 53 κιλά όταν πήρε μέρος στο tour, ο Ροντρίγκεζ μάζευε και τέντωνε το σώμα του με τη δύναμη ενός οποιουδήποτε κορυφαίου αθλητή ενώ στην ακμή του κατάφερνε χαμηλά δυνατά drive που τον έκαναν αναλογικά τον καλύτερο στα χτυπήματα παίκτη που έχει δει ποτέ το επαγγελματικό παιχνίδι. Είχε εξαιρετική ικανότητα στο να αυτοσχεδιάζει βολές και το ταλέντο του στα wedge ήταν θρυλικό, ειδικά από άμμο. Ο Ροντρίγκεζ σίγουρα θα είχε νικήσει σε περισσότερα τουρνουά εάν είχε υπάρξει και εξαίρετος putter. Το ταλέντο του Τσι Τσι ξεπερνά τις ικανότητες του στα γήπεδα του γκολφ, καθώς πίστευε ότι για ένα καλύτερο κόσμο είναι επιτακτική η προσοχή και η βοήθεια προς τους νέους. Έχει ιδρύσει το Ίδρυμα Νέων Τσι Τσι Ροντρίγκεζ στο Κλίεργουοτερ της Φλόριντα το οποίο φιλοξενεί νέους που αντιμετωπίζουν δυσκολίες ή έχουν υπάρξει θύμα κακοποίησης. Η απίστευτη καριέρα του Τσι Τσι περιλαμβάνει τέσσερις συνολικά νίκες σε PGA Tour στις σεζόν 1990-1991 ενώ ήταν ο μοναδικός κατά σειρά νικητής των αθλητικών γεγονότων του 1991. Έγινε ο πρώτος παίκτης του Senior Tour που κατάφερε να κερδίσει το ίδιο αθλητικό γεγονός τρία κατά σειρά έτη, έκανε ρεκόρ στο Senior Tour με 8 συνεχή birdies στην πορεία του για τη νίκη στο Silver Pages Classic του 1987, εκπροσώπησε το Πουέρτο Ρίκο σε 12 ομάδες Παγκοσμίου Κυπέλλου, κέρδισε Βραβείο Αναγνώρισης Συνολικού Έργου Ισπανόφωνου (1986) και το Replica's Hispanic Man of the Year (1988), και μπήκε στο PGA Hall of Fame του Παγκόσμιου Γκολφ το 1992. Παρά την δυνατή και επιτυχημένη του καριέρα, ο Ροντρίγκεζ άρχισε να έχει προβλήματα υγείας, γεγονός που έγινε εμφανές και στο παιχνίδι του. Δούλεψε το παιχνίδι του, προσπάθησε να βρει τι δεν πήγαινε καλά αλλά δεν τα κατάφερε. Αισθανόταν αδύναμος, είχε έντονους πόνους στο στομάχι και έναν επίμονο πόνο στο σαγόνι, αλλά ο Τσι Τσι Ροντρίγκεζ δεν πήγε ποτέ του στο γιατρό. Δεν πίστευε και πολύ στην Ιατρική οπότε το αμέλησε.

Τον Οκτώβριο του 1998, ο Τσι Τσι Ροντρίγκεζ έπαθε καρδιακή προσβολή ακριβώς λίγο πριν παίξει στο Senior PGA Tour στην Καλιφόρνια. rom the time he first fashioned one from the branch of a guava tree, Chi Chi Rodriguez was a magician with a golf club. Yet for all his accomplishments as a player, his contributions as an entertainer and a humanitarian are even greater. From the famous sword dance he breaks into when he makes a putt to the success of his youth foundation, Rodriguez has made the world a better place.

Born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Oct. 23, 1935, Juan Rodriguez was the frailest of six children and nearly died at age four from rickets and tropical sprue. His father worked long hours cutting sugar cane with a machete but never made more that $18 a week, and the young Rodriguez saw in athletics a chance at a better life. As a teenager, he boxed in the streets for sodas and was a pitcher good enough to play alongside Roberto Clemente, Orlando Cepeda and local legend Chi Chi Flores, who became his namesake.

A caddie since the age of eight, Rodriguez also had a natural aptitude for belting a golf ball when he had one, a rolled-up tin can when he didn’t. After a two-year stint in the Army, he returned to caddie at the Dorado Beach Resort and at age 17 finished second in the Puerto Rican Open. With the help of longtime touring pro Pete Cooper, Rodriguez continued to improve, and in 1960 secured a stake of $12,000 from Laurence Rockefeller, one of the resort’s owners.

Rodriguez headed for the PGA TOUR, won $450 in his first event and was on his way.

It has been said that pound for pound, Chi Chi Rodriguez is the longest hitter in the history of golf. At 5'7" and weighing 132 pounds, the wiry Puerto Rican has at times driven a golf ball over 350 yards. He has consistently been at over 250 yards throughout his career.

As a player, he was unique. Whippet thin at 5-7 and 117 pounds when he joined the tour, Rodriguez coiled and uncoiled as violently as any top player ever has and in his prime drilled out low, hot-running drives that made him pound-for-pound the longest hitter the professional game had ever seen. He excelled in his ability to improvise shots and possessed legendary talent with the wedges, particularly from sand. Rodriguez surely would have won many more tournaments had he been an outstanding putter.

Chi Chi's talent extends beyond what he does on the golf course, as he has a strong desire to make a positive impact on today's youth. He has founded the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation in Clearwater, Florida, which is a home to troubled and abused youngsters.

Chi Chi's incredible career includes winning PGA tournaments four times in each of the 1990-91 seasons and was the only winner of back to back events in 1991. He became the first player on the Senior Tour to win the same event three consecutive years, set a senior tour record with eight consecutive birdies en route to a win at the 1987 Silver Pages Classic, represented Puerto Rico on 12 World Cup Teams, won the Hispanic Achievement Recognition Award ('86) and Replica's Hispanic Man of the Year ('88), and was inducted into PGA's World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992.

Despite a strong, successful career, Rodriguez's health started failing him and it showed in his game. He fiddled with equipment, worked on his game, tried to find out what was wrong, but couldn't figure it out. He was feeling weak, had severe stomachaches, and a pain persisted in his jaw, but Chi Chi Rodriguez never saw a doctor. He didn't believe much in medicine, so he left it unattended.

In October 1998, Chi Chi Rodriguez had a heart attack just before he was to play in a Senior PGA Tour event in California.

Fortunately, with the help of doctors and modern-day medicine, Rodriguez has recovered and we will continue seeing him on the golf course doing his famous sword dance when he holes a putt.

όνος παλιάς εφοπλιστικής οικογένειας, ο Γιάννης Καρράς λάτρευε να ταξιδεύει με το σκάφος του, που συνήθιζε να το οδηγεί ο ίδιος φορώντας το χαρακτηριστικό κόκκινο σκουφάκι του. Σε μια τέτοια καλοκαιρινή του απόδραση αντίκρυσε ένα φυσικό λιμάνι τέτοιας μοναδικής ομορφιάς, κοντά στον Μαρμαρά που τον ανάγκασε να σκεφτεί φωναχτά και να πει ότι «θα χτίσω εδώ ένα παλάτι, για το οποίο θα μιλούν όλοι γι αυτό...» Όλα ξεκίνησαν με μια κρουαζιέρα στο Όρος Άθως, το καλοκαίρι του 1963 για τον εορτασμό των 1.000 ετών από τη δημιουργία της μοναστικής κοινότητας του Άθω. Γνωστοί Αθηναίοι, μαζί με τον εφοπλιστή Γιάννη Καρρά αποτελούν το πλήρωμα του σκάφους του Έλληνα μεγιστάνα. Ένα ξαφνικό μπουρίνι ανοιχτά της Σιθωνίας τους αναγκάζει να αγκυροβολήσουν στον Τορωναίο Κόλπο για να περάσουν με ασφάλεια τη βραδιά. Το επόμενο πρωϊ ο Γιάννης Καρράς, αντικρίζοντας για πρώτη φορά τους καταπράσινους λόφους που σβήνουν μέσα σε απαράμιλλης ομορφιάς κολπίσκους με διάφανα γαλάζια νερά, ερωτεύεται ακαριαία το παρθένο τοπίο .... Στο μέρος αυτό όπου δεν υπήρχαν δρόμοι, ηλεκτρικό ρεύμα, σύστημα υδροδότησης, ο Καρράς οραματίστηκε μια πρότυπη ξενοδοχειακή μονάδα, μια αυτόνομη πολιτεία πολλαπλών χρήσεων. Μια αδιαίρετη έκταση 17.630 στρεμμάτων περνά στη κάτοχή του. Μέσα σε 3 χρόνια η περιοχή άλλαξε όψη, με αποξήρανσεις ελών, εκτεταμένες δενδροφυτεύσεις, δημιουργία ελαιώνων με 45.000 ελαιόδενδρα και ενός αμπελώνα έκτασης 4.750 στρεμμάτων. Η μελέτη της οποίας τα πρώτα σχέδια επιμεήθηκε ο Βάλτερ Γκρόπιους, ιδρυτής της σχολής Bauhaus, περιελάμβανε αθλητικές εγκαταστάσεις, γήπεδα γκολφ, οινοποιίο, βουστάσιο και χώρο εκτροφής αιγοπροβάτων, στάβλους, ελαιώνες και μια μαρίνα, την πρώτη στη Βόριο Ελλάδα με υποδομή για σκάφη αναψυχής. Οι εργασίες κατασκευής ξεκίνησαν το 1968 με τη Βίλα Γαλήνη· στο βραχώδη και άγονο λόφο Γαλάνη, που ονομάστηκε έτσι από ένα ληστή που σκοτώθηκε εκεί, χτίστηκε η διάσημη βίλα συνολικής επιφάνειας δύο χιλιάδων τετραγωνικών μέτρων. Δείγμα μοναδικής αρχιτεκτονικής και ομορφιάς, πάνω σε σχέδια του γνωστού αρχιτέκτονα της εποχής Κώστα Καψαμπέλη, επιπλωμένη με σπάνια μοναστηριακά έπιπλα και μοναδικά έργα τέχνης, η βίλα φιγουράριζε στα περιοδικά της δεκαετίας το ’70 ως ένα από τα ομορφότερα κτίρια της χώρας. Ο Κωνσταντίνος Καραμανλής, ο Σαλβαντόρ Νταλί, η Τζίνα Μπαχάουερ φίλη και κουμπάρα του Γιάννη Καρρά η οποία συνήθιζε να περνά ώρες στο πιάνο που βρισκόταν στο κάτω σαλόνι, είναι μερικοί από τους εκλεκτούς καλεσμένους που αποτελούσαν το φανατικό κοινό της βίλας εκείνη την εποχή. Το 1976 ανοίγει τις πόρτες του το ξενοδοχείο

Village Inn, που φέρνει μια πραγματική επανάσταση στην τουριστική και πολιτιστική εικόνα της Ελλάδας, ενώ το ξενοδοχείο Μελίτων ανοίγει το 1979 και το ξενοδοχείο Σιθωνία το 1980. Το Porto Carras στα 80s δεν έχει σε τίποτα να ζηλέψει από την κοσμική γαλλική ριβιέρα εκείνης της εποχής. Επιχειρηματίες, καλλιτέχνες, προσωπικότητες των γραμμάτων και των τεχνών συνέρρεαν στο Porto Carras, για να παραστούν στα απογευματινά coctails, τα γεύματα αλλά και στα μυθικά parties των 80s. Η Λένα Εμφιετζόγλου, η Κατερίνα Βελλίδου με τα εντυπωσιακότερα parties, η Μυρτώ Τσουκαλά, ο Λάκης Κλεόπας, ο Άγις Κυνηγόπουλος, ο Στέλιος Μπουτάρης, ο Πέτρος Κόφας, ο Αλέξανδρος Μπακατσέλος, περνούσαν τα καλοκαίρια τους στο συγκρότημα και η παρουσία τους στη προκυμαία ήταν πάντα ένα κοσμικό γεγονός. Αλλά και η πληθωρική προσωπικότητα του jet-setter, Γιάννη Καρρά, ήταν πόλος έλξης για προσωπικότητες παγκόσμιας ακτινοβολίας όπως ο γιος του Αγά Χαν, ο Σταύρος Νιάρχος, ο Ρούντολφ Νουρέγιεφ, ο Φρανσσουά Μιτεράν, η Μαρκότ Φοντέϊν, η Τζόαν Μπαέζ, η Φιόνα φον Τίσεν, οι Ροκφέλερ, ο Βαλερί Ζισκάρ ντ’Εστέν, ο Αλβέρτος του Μονακό, ο Τζον Κένεντι Τζούνιορ. Γνωστοί Έλληνες πολιτικοί όπως ο Γεώργιος Ράλλης που τιμούσε το γήπεδο γκολφ, ο Παναγιώτης Κανελλόπουλος, ο Αλέξανδρος Ζολώτας, η Μελίνα Μερκούρη, ο Ανδρεάς Παπανδρέου αλλά και πρόσφατα η βασίλισσα της Ολλανδίας Τζουλιάνα και ο πρόεδρος της Ρωσσίας, Βλαντιμίρ Πούτιν, δήλωσαν γοητευμένοι από τη διαμονή τους.

Στο μέρος αυτό ο όπου δεν υπήρχαν δρόμοι, ηλεκτρικό ρεύμα, σύστημα υδροδότησης, ο Καρράς οραματίστηκε μια πρότυπη ξενοδοχειακή μονάδα, μια αυτόνομη πολιτεία πολλαπλών χρήσεων

escended from a long line of shipping magnates, John Carras loved sailing on his own boat, which he used to skipper himself wearing a striking red hat. One summer, he discovered a natural harbour of such exceptional beauty near Marmaras that he exclaimed, “I will build a palace here, one that will have everybody talking…”

It all began on a cruise around Mount Athos in the summer of 1963 to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of the monastic community of Athos.

Prominent Athenians including John Carras were crewing the Greek tycoon’s vessel. A sudden gust of wind in the open waters of Sithonia forced them to drop anchor in the gulf of Toronaio for the night.

The next morning, John Carras got his first glimpse of the stunning verdant hills rolling down towards the clear blue water and instantly fell in love with the virgin territory…

The area did not have any roads, electricity or water supply, but Carras nonetheless envisioned an autonomous and innovative resort hotel. He purchased a 4,357-acre section of land, which was entirely transformed over the next three years: draining of marshes, extensive reforestation, planting of 45,000 olive trees and a 1,174-acre vineyard.

The initial designs were overseen by architect Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus School, and included sports facilities, golf courses, a winery, dairy farm and breeding area, stables, olive groves and a marina – the first in northern Greece with an infrastructure for yachts.

Construction began in 1968 with the Villa Galini on the barren and rocky Galini hill named after the bandit killed there. The famous 2,000 square metre villa was a uniquely beautiful architectural specimen designed by renowned architect Kostas Kapsabelis, equipped with rare monastic furniture and extraordinary works of art, and was featured in many magazines of the 70s. Konstantinos Karamanlis, Salvatore Dali, Gina Bachauer, who was a friend of John Carras and used to spend hours at the piano in the salon, were but a few of the personalities to favour the villa at the time.

The Village Inn hotel opened its doors in 1976, and engendered a true revolution of the tourism and cultural image of Greece. The Meliton and Sithonia hotels were opened in 1979 and 1980 respectively.

In the 80s, the Porto Carras resort was a worthy adversary of the cosmopolitan French Riviera.

Entrepreneurs, artists, literary and artistic personalities flocked to Porto Carras to attend afternoon cocktails, meals and the legendary parties of the 80s. Lena Emfietzoglou, Katerina Vellidou, who hosted spectacular parties, Myrto Tsoukala, Lakis Kleopas, Agis Kynigopoulos, Stelios Boutaris, Petros Kofas, and Alexandros Bakatselos all spent summers at the resort and their presence on the waterfront was tantamount to a cosmic event.

The exuberant personality of jet-setter John Carras also acted as a magnet for world-class celebrities, including the son of Aga Khan, Stavros Niarchos, Rudolf Nureyev, François Mitterand, Margot Fonteyn, Joan Baez, Fiona von Thyssen, the Rockefellers, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, Albert of Monaco and John Kennedy Jr. Famous Greek politicians like Georgios Rallis, who loved the golf course, Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, Alexandros Zolotas, Melina Mercouri, Andreas Papandreou and more recently Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, were all charmed by their stay at the legendary Porto Carras Grand Resort.

WITH AN EYE TO THE FUTURE In 1999, after the departure of the original owner, the resort was purchased by the Technical Olympic Group of Companies, which placed the winning bid in the invitation to tender from the National Bank of Greece, the new President of the Group, Konstantinos Steggos made it his life’s purpose to return the Porto Carras Grand Resort to its rightful place at the top of the international tourism market. The wonderful new spa and seawater therapy centre (the largest in southeast Europe), the spectacularly elegant renovation of the Villa Galini that embodies its long and bright history are all moves in that direction. It is no coincidence that the resort was chosen to host the Summit of the European Union in 2003 for the presentation of the draft European Constitution. Glamorous holidays, comfort and luxury at a resort with superior service and exceptional infrastructure – a taste of the “good life” at one of the loveliest corners of the planet.

This is the one, the only “legend” of Porto Carras.

And it still lives on…

ο Swing Away, που είναι πνευματικό δημιούργημα του παραγωγού Γιώργου Στεφανόπουλου (με κινηματογραφικές παραγωγές που περιλαμβάνουν τα Golf In The Kingdom, Second City’s Buzzkill, and Bereave), δίνει μια νέα πνοή στην ομορφιά των Ελληνικών νησιών με το να συνδυάζει το άθλημα του γκολφ με το πνεύμα της εξιλέωσης. Είναι ένας τέλειος συνδυασμός που εδραιώνει την Ελλάδα ως παγκοσμίου επιπέδου τόπο κινηματογράφησης ταινιών και υπενθυμίζει στον κόσμο πως το άθλημα του γκολφ ζει και ακμάζει σε ένα από τα πιο εκθαμβωτικά μέρη στη γη. Το Swing Away διηγείται την ιστορία της Ζωής Παπαδοπούλου (που ερμηνεύει η Elisabeth Shannon, γνωστή από το American Pie), μιας LPGA παίκτριας του γκολφ που αποσύρεται στη γενέτειρα της για να ξεφύγει από τα φώτα της διασημότητας μετά από ένα περιστατικό κακής συμπεριφοράς της κατά τη διάρκεια ενός αγώνα, το οποίο έχει προκαλέσει την προσωρινή αποβολή της από το tour. Η Ζωή ξαναβρίσκει τις ελληνικές της ρίζες και ανακαλύπτει μια μεγαλύτερη ιστορία που εμπλέκει τους κατοίκους της πόλης, των οποίων η αδιάλειπτη αισιοδοξία και ανθεκτικό πνεύμα την εμπνέουν να βρει το μεγαλείο μέσα από την πρόκληση των ανυπέρβλητων αντιξοοτήτων. Η παραγωγή έχει επίσης το προτέρημα ενός καστ που αποτελείται από τους καλύτερους ηθοποιούς της Ελλάδας και συμπεριλαμβάνει τους Μάνο Γαβρά, Ρένο Χαραλαμπίδη, Αλέξανδρο Μυλωνά Όλγα Δαμάνη και Χρήστο Σουγάρη. Η νεαρή ηθοποιός Viktoria Miller πρωταγωνιστεί ως Στέλλα- μια πολλά υποσχόμενη νεαρή παίκτρια του γκολφ, η οποία και βοηθείται από τη Ζωή στο να εξελίξει το παιχνίδι της αλλά και ανταποδίδει τη βοήθεια αυτή. Το LPGA επίσης συμβάλλει στην ταινία καθώς είναι χορηγός και οι σκηνές γκολφ του Swing Away θα γυριστούν στο Shop Rite LPGA Classic το οποίο διεξάγεται στο Aτλάντικ Σίτυ. «Είναι μια καταπληκτική ευκαιρία για το LPGA ώστε να μας ενημερώσει αλλά και να συμβάλει σε μια ταινία που θα δουν τόσοι πολλοί» είπε ο Υπεύθυνος Επικοινωνίας του LPGA Kraig Kann. «Τέτοιες ευκαιρίες αναδεικνύουν τους παίκτες και τους αγώνες

μας ενώ ταυτόχρονα βοηθούν στο να επιτευχθεί μεγαλύτερη παρακολούθηση του αθλήματος μας. Είμαστε ενθουσιασμένοι που συμμετέχουμε.» Το Swing Away διηγείται με συγκινητικό τρόπο την ιστορία του γκολφ, την ομορφιά και την πρόκληση του. Με το να προβάλει τη διασημότητα ενός αστεριού του LPGA, η ταινία αυτή είναι άλλη μια επιβεβαίωση πως το γυναικείο γκολφ γίνεται όλο και πιο δημοφιλές ανά την υφήλιο. Η Nicole Dalkas Castrale, η Ελληνοαμερικανίδα νικήτρια του LPGA, βρίσκεται σε θέση συμβούλου για την ταινία. It’s a perfect combination that establishes Greece as a world-class film location and reminds the world that the sport of golf is alive and thriving in one of the most stunning places on earth.

Swing Away tells the story of Zoe Papadopoulos, (played by Shannon Elizabeth, from American Pie fame) an LPGA golfer who retreats to her homeland in order to escape the media spotlight following an incident of bad behaviour during a tournament event, one that results in her temporary suspension from the tour. She reconnects with her Greek roots and discovers a much larger story involving the townspeople, whose unfailing optimism and resilient spirit inspire her to find greatness in the face of insurmountable odds. Such a positive message - given the post-bailout

struggles Greece has faced - will be a welcome change to Greece's current world perception.

Swing Away also stars John O’Hurley, as the patronizing, antagonistic golf course owner against whom Zoe and the locals chafe. A cast of Greece’s most talented actors, including Manos Gavras, Renos Haralambidis, Alexandros Mylonas, Olga Damani, and Christos Sougaris, also bless the production.

Young actress Viktoria Miller stars as Stella - a promising young golf prodigy whose game Zoe helps develop, and vice versa. The LPGA is also involved with the film as a promotional partner and the golf scenes for Swing Away will be shot at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, which takes place just outside Atlantic City.

“This is a terrific way for the LPGA to grow our awareness and play a relevant role in a motion picture that will be seen by so many,” said LPGA Chief Communications Officer Kraig Kann.

“Opportunities like this showcase our players and our brand while helping to attract a bigger following for our sport. We’re excited to take part.”

Swing Away touchingly tells the story of golf, its beauty and its challenge. To showcase the celebrity of an LPGA star, this motion picture is another affirmation of the growing popularity of women’s golf around the world.

Serving as a consultant on the film is LPGA winner and Greek-American Nicole Castrale. A member of the victorious United States Solheim Cup teams in 2007 and 2009, Castrale will spend time with the cast and crew and help oversee filming of the golf scenes in Greece and also Atlantic City.

ώς σας ήρθε η ιδέα να γυρίσετε μια ταινία για το γκολφ στην Ελλάδα; Δεν ήταν στην ουσία δική μου ιδέα, ένας παλιός φίλος προσπαθούσε να γυρίσει αυτήν την ταινία εδώ και πολύ καιρό αλλά χρειαζόταν έναν μεγάλο επενδυτή για να τη δρομολογήσει. Μου άρεσε η ιστορία, αλλά αυτό που μου κίνησε περισσότερο το ενδιαφέρον ήταν η πλευρά της ιστορίας που αφορά το γκολφ. Όπως γνωρίζετε, προωθώ το γκολφ στην Ελλάδα εδώ και πολλά χρόνια. Ελπίζω πως η ιστορία αυτή θα φέρει πιο κοντά στο γκολφ όλους αυτούς που δεν έχουν ιδέα σχετικά με αυτό. ταινία Swing Away; Η ιστορία είναι μια ανάλαφρη ρομαντική κωμωδία που φυσικά συνδυάζει και το γκολφ. Η ιστορία κυρίως περιστρέφεται γύρω από την Ζωή, την οποία ερμηνεύει η Elisabeth Shannon, μια επαγγελματία γκόλφερ που έχει ένα ανάρμοστο ξέσπασμα κατά τη διάρκεια ενός αγώνα, εξαιτίας του οποίου χάνει την ευκαιρία να κερδίσει ένα πρωτάθλημα. Παρατά το άθλημα και επιστρέφει στις ρίζες της στη Ελλάδα για να χαλαρώσει και να κάνει ένα διάλειμμα από την πίεση του επαγγελματικού γκολφ. Ενώ βρίσκεται στο χωριό της γνωρίζει ένα νεαρό κορίτσι που είναι αρχάρια παίκτης, γίνεται φίλη της και την βοηθά να μάθει το άθλημα. Υπάρχει ένα γήπεδο γκολφ που βρίσκεται σε κακή κατάσταση του οποίου ο ιδιοκτήτης θέλει να το πουλήσει σε έναν επιχειρηματία που θέλει να αναπτύξει την περιοχή, τον οποίο ερμηνεύει ο John O’ Hurley. Η ιστορία συνεχίζεται με την απογοήτευση των κατοίκων σχετικά με την πώληση του γηπέδου του γκολφ. Για να σωθεί το γήπεδο οργανώνεται ένας αγώνας ανάμεσα στον Ο’ Hurley και το νεαρό κορίτσι. Μόνο αυτά μπορώ να σας πω για να μην αποκαλύψω ένα τέλος δραματικό και γεμάτο ευαισθησία για το οποίο θα πρέπει να δείτε την ταινία. Γιατί να κάνουμε μια ταινία όπως το Swing Away σε μια χώρα με τόσο λίγα γήπεδα του γκολφ όπως η Ελλάδα; Ο σκοπός μας δεν ήταν μια ιστορία για το γκολφ, ήταν για κάποιον που χρειαζόταν να χαλαρώσει από τις δυσκολίες του να παίζει επαγγελματικό γκολφ. Το γήπεδο απλά μπήκε στην ιστορία κατά τύχη. Το γκολφ ενθαρρύνει τη σκέψη. Το Swing Away ασχολείται με αυτή την φιλοσοφική πλευρά του αθλήματος του γκολφ; Όχι, πιστεύω πως δίνει έμφαση σε αυτό που βιώνουν οι άνθρωποι της στην ιστορία και τις δυσκολίες και επιπλοκές που παρουσιάζει η ζωή. Η ιστορία είναι πολύπλευρη αλλά με λίγες φιλοσοφίες. Τι υποστήριξη έχετε στην Ελλάδα για το Swing Away; Η εκπληκτική υποστήριξη προέρχεται από τους κατοίκους της Ρόδου όπου γυρίζεται η ταινία, μας παρέχεται κατάλυμα από το Rhodes Palace και οι αεροπορικές μας μετακινήσεις είναι προσφορά της Aegean Airlines. Αυτά είναι τα κύρια παραδείγματα συμβολής, η καλοσύνη όμως των ντόπιων που άνοιξαν τις καρδιές τους για όλους τους συντελεστές της ταινίας ήταν τουλάχιστον συγκινητική. Τι άλλο θεωρήσατε ενδιαφέρον κατά τη διάρκεια των γυρισμάτων; Φέραμε μια επαγγελματία γκόλφερ από τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες σε θέση συμβούλου της ταινίας, η οποία έτυχε να είναι Ελληνικής καταγωγής και μέλος του LPGA. Το όνομα της είναι Nicole Dalkas-Castrale, μια υπέροχη νεαρή κοπέλα, για πρώτη της φορά στην Ελλάδα. Πιστεύω πως μπορεί να παίξει πολύ σημαντικό ρόλο για το ελληνικό γκολφ, καθώς η Ελλάδα δεν είχε ποτέ διεθνή επαγγελματία παίκτη του γκολφ, είτε άνδρα είτε γυναίκα με τον οποίο θα μπορούσε κάποιος να ταυτιστεί. Η Nicole πιθανότατα θα είναι το πρώτο διεθνές αστέρι που θα λατρέψει η Ελλάδα. Τι πιστεύετε πως θα αποκομίσουν οι θεατές βλέποντας την ταινία; Θα πρέπει να είναι ψυχαγωγική από πολλές απόψεις καθώς έχει πολλά ενδιαφέροντα σημεία όπως θα έχετε καταλάβει. Ιδανικά ο κύριος σκοπός μου είναι να μεταφέρω σε όλον τον κόσμο το μήνυμα ότι η Ελλάδα δεν έχει μόνο να κάνει με όμορφα τοπία αλλά και το άθλημα του γκολφ. Συνομιλήσατε με έναν πρωθυπουργό και υπουργούς Τουρισμού πολλές φορές στο παρελθόν με θέμα ένα καλύτερο κλίμα για τους επενδυτές στην Ελλάδα. Ποια είναι η γνώμη σας για τα τρέχοντα θέματα της Ελλάδας; Όλα αυτά τα χρόνια έχω μιλήσει με πολλούς από τους κατόχους θέσεων όπως αυτές που αναφέρατε σε διαφορετικές περιστάσεις, κυρίως για την προώθηση του γκολφ. Πρέπει να πω πως δεν έχω δει αποτελέσματα. Εστιάζουν κυρίως στο να έρθουν επενδυτές και να κατασκευάσουν γήπεδα γκολφ αλλά δεν συνειδητοποιούν πως θα πρέπει να υπάρχουν και παίκτες που θα χρησιμοποιήσουν τις εγκαταστάσεις. Εάν δεν υπάρχει κέρδος για τον επενδυτή τότε αυτός είναι καταδικασμένος. Ποιο είναι το επόμενο σχέδιο σας; Ποτέ δεν ξέρεις με μένα, πράγματα συμβαίνουν συνέχεια αλλά το γκολφ πάντα έρχεται πρώτο. Τον Ιούνιο το Aegean Airlines ProAm γιορτάζει στο Costa Navarino την 10η Επέτειο του τουρνουά. Έχετε λάβει μέρος σε σχεδόν όλα. Αυτή ήταν για μένα μια πολύ ιδιαίτερη στιγμή. Ποια είναι η γνώμη σας για το Aegean Airlines ProAm; Είναι ένα καταπληκτικό τουρνουά γκολφ που αναγνωρίζεται και διέπεται από τους κανονισμούς των Ευρωπαϊκών PGA. Το επίτευγμα αυτό πρέπει να αναγνωριστεί στον κ. Θεόδωρο Βασιλάκη, Διευθύνων Σύμβουλο και Πρόεδρο της Aegean Airlines για την αποφασιστικότητα και το σθένος του να ιδρύσει αυτό το Ευρωπαϊκό τουρνουά γκολφ στην Ελλάδα. Τελευταία ερώτηση. Τι ελπίζετε για την Ελλάδα σχετικά με το γκολφ; Δεν υπάρχει λόγος η Ελλάδα να μην μπορεί να γίνει πρωτεύων προορισμός για το γκολφ στην Μεσόγειο. Ο καιρός είναι υπέρ της - μπορείς να παίξεις 300 μέρες το χρόνο, έχει αξέχαστα τοπία, καλοσυνάτους ανθρώπους και τουριστικά αξιοθέατα που δεν έχουν τίποτα να ζηλέψουν. Η επέκταση της τουριστικής σεζόν μόνο και μόνο με τη δημιουργία γηπέδων γκολφ σε ολόκληρη τη χώρα σίγουρα θα βοηθούσε την οικονομία με πολλούς τρόπους, όχι μόνο με το εισόδημα από το γκολφ αλλά και τα έσοδα από όλες τις άλλες πηγές όπως την μεταφορά, τα ξενοδοχεία και τα καταλύματα, το χώρο εστίασης, τη λιανική πώληση, το τομέα ένδυσης, εξοπλισμού και φαρμακευτικών προϊόντων καθώς και διάφορα άλλα- η λίστα είναι ατελείωτη. Εάν αυτό δεν είναι ώθηση της οικονομίας τότε δεν ξέρω τι θα μπορούσε να είναι. Η Ελλάδα είναι πολύ πίσω στην ανάπτυξη που σχετίζεται με το γκολφ και είναι καιρός πια όσοι είναι σε θέση ισχύος να συνειδητοποιήσουν πως η Ελλάδα δεν θα έπρεπε να είναι μόνο ήλιος, άμμος και σπανακόπιτες.

ow did you come up with the idea of developing a golf movie in Greece? It was not really my idea - an old friend had been putting this film together for many years but needed a major investor to get it in motion. I liked the story, but what interested me most was the golf aspect in the story. As you know, I have been promoting golf in Greece for many years. My hope is that this story will bring awareness to many about the game of golf, even those who know nothing about it. Furthermore, I believe that this film also will reveal the beauty and traditions of Greece around the world.

Could you tell us a little about the movie Swing Away? The story is a light comedy with a little romance and of course golf. Primarily the story goes to the star Zoe, played by Shannon Elisabeth, a professional golfer who has a melt down in a tournament and misses her chance for a championship.

She gives up the game and returns to her roots in Greece to unwind and take a break from the pressure of professional golf. In a village, she happens upon a little girl who is just starting to play, befriends and helps her to learn the game. She meets the girl’s father, played by Manos Gravas, and romance soon blooms.

The story continues in topical village surroundings with a church, tavernas etc. There is an existing golf course that's in poor condition, which the owner is looking to sell to a property developer played by John O'Hurley.

The story goes on with the disappointment of the townspeople regarding the sale of the golf course. To save the golf course, a challenge match is arranged between O'Hurley and the little girl. That is as much as

You can play at least 300 days a year, it has unforgettable landscapes, warm-hearted people and tourist attractions that are second to none I can tell you without giving away a very dramatic and sensitive ending. You'll just have to see the movie.

Why make Swing Away in a country like Greece, with so few golf courses? Well, it’s not intended to be a golf story, but rather one about a professional golfer unwinding after a difficult season. The course comes into the story purely incidentally.

Do you think Swing Away is a way to create a new Greek myth? I'm not sure. It's just a simple story that has its complications. It's a real story of our times, nothing more.

Golf is great for contemplation. Does Swing Away address these philosophical aspects of the game of golf? No, I think it emphasises the reality of people and the difficulties and complications that life presents us with. This story has many angles, but very few philosophies attached to it.

What support are you getting for Swing Away in Greece? The locals in Rhodes, where the movie is being made, have been incredibly supportive.

Accommodation is being provided by the Rhodes Place Hotel and air travel by Aegean Airlines. These are the major contributions, but the kindness of the locals that opened their hearts for the cast and crew was very warming to say the least.

What else did you find interesting while shooting the movie? We brought in a professional golfer from the US to consult on the movie, who happens to be of Greek heritage and a member of the LPGA. Her name is Nicole Dalkas-Castrale, a wonderful young lady, and it was her first time in Greece. I feel that she can play a very important role for golf in Greece, as Greece has never had an international golf professional (man or woman) that we could identify with. Nicole will be probably become the first international star that Greece will adore.

What do you hope people will gain from seeing the film? It should be very entertaining in many ways.

There is a lot going on as you can tell. My main objective is to let people around the world know that Greece is about both golfing and beautiful landscapes.

You spoke with a Prime Minister and Ministries of Tourism several times in the past about a better business climate for investors in Greece. What do you about the current issues Greece is facing? I've spoken to many of the officials you mentioned on

different occasions throughout the years, primarily about the promotion of golf and have, unfortunately, had no results to speak of. Their main focus is for investors to come and build golf courses but they don't realize that there must be golfers already in place to use the facility. Without the potential of income, investors are doomed.

What is your next project? You never know with me, things just come up, but playing golf always comes first.

Aegean Airlines ProAm is celebrating its 10th Anniversary at Costa Navarino in June. You’ve participated in almost all past events. Tell us about some of your remarkable moments through the years. The one that I will always remember is when the 5th Aegean Airlines ProAm honoured and recognized Captain Vasilis Costantakoupos for his foresight and passion to build that outstanding complex, which brought the best of golf courses to Greece. For me, that was a very special moment.

What do you think about the Aegean Airlines ProAm? It is an impressive golf tournament recognized and sanctioned by the PGAs of Europe. All the credit for this achievement must go to Mr Theodore Vassilakis, the Chairman and President of Aegean Airlines, for his unwavering determination to establish a European golf tournament in Greece.

Last question. What is your hope for Greece regarding golf? There is no reason why Greece cannot become a premier golf destination in the Mediterranean. It has the weather in its favour - you can play at least 300 days a year, it has unforgettable landscapes, warm-hearted people and tourist attractions that are second to none. The extension of the tourist season by merely having an assortment of golf courses throughout the country would definitely help the economy in many ways; not just with the income from golfing but all the other income sources such as transportation, hotel and lodging, eating establishments, retail sales, clothes, equipment, pharmaceuticals and sundry items - and the list goes on. If that's not an economy boost I don't know what is. Greece is far behind in the development of golf. It's time for the powers-that-be to finally comprehend that Greece should not just be about the sun, sand and spinach pies.

Είναι φέτος η χρονιά σου; Σίγουρα είναι από τις καλύτερες μου μέχρι στιγμής, έχοντας ως στόχο να διατηρήσω την καλή μου εικόνα στους αγώνες του εξωτερικού που θα εκπροσωπήσω με την εθνική ομάδα. Ο κύριος στόχος μου είναι να βρεθεί η Εθνική ομάδα σε μια καλή θέση στην ομαδική κατάταξη στο Πανευρωπαϊκό Πρωτάθλημα. Παράλληλα, σε προσωπικό επίπεδο, θα κυνηγήσω, όπως πάντα, τη διάκριση. Πως ασχολήθηκες με το γκολφ; Οι γονείς μου με έβαλαν στον αθλητισμό από μικρό. Στον χώρο του γκολφ με ώθησε ο πατέρας μου με τον οποίο παίζαμε συχνά παρέα και με στήριξε σε πολύ μεγάλο βαθμό Σε ποιους αγώνες έχεις συμμετάσχει έως τώρα; Σε όλα τα Πανελλήνια Πρωταθλήματα που λαμβάνουν χώρα, αλλά και σε άλλους αγώνες σε διάφορα γήπεδα στην Ελλάδα.Επίσης έχω λάβει μερος στο Grand Final των Faldo Series στις ΗΠΑ, καθώς και στο παγκόσμιο πρωτάθλημα που έγινε στην Ιαπωνία τον Σεπτεμβριο του 2014. Έχω συμμετάσχει και σε Πανευρωπαϊκά Πρωταθλήματα καθώς και σε διάφορους διεθνείς αγώνες στο εξωτερικό μαζί με την ομάδα μου. Τι είδους προπόνηση κάνεις; Αυτό εξαρτάται και από την χρονική περίοδο που έχω πριν τον κάθε αγώνα. Αν πλησιάζει κάποιο τουρνουά εστιάζω την προσοχή μου στο να προπονούμαι περισσότερο μέσα στο γήπεδο παρά στο driving range.Το χειμώνα που δεν διοργανώνονται τόσοι αγώνες έχω τον χρόνο να δουλέψω την τεχνική. Πόση ώρα κάνεις προπόνηση την ημέρα; Δυστυχώς δεν προλαβαίνω να προπονούμαι καθημερινώς λόγω των σπουδών μου. Μέσα στην εβδομάδα αφιερώνω συνήθως 5 μέρες συμπεριλαμβανομένων και τα σαββατοκύριακα. Δεν παρατηρώ πόση ώρα προπονούμαι απλά δεν φεύγω από το γήπεδο αν δεν ικανοποιηθώ από το αποτέλεσμα της προπόνησης μου. Πώς θα ορίζατε την έννοια του ταλέντου; Για μένα, ταλέντο είναι να μπορείς να δέχεσαι τα ερεθίσματα και να τα αφομοιώνεις πιο γρήγορα από ό,τι οι άλλοι. Οχι μόνο στον αθλητισμό αλλά σε οτιδήποτε κάνεις. Είναι κάτι που το έχεις από τη στιγμή που γεννιέσαι. Πολύ σημαντικός παράγοντας όμως είναι η θέληση να πας ψηλά. Μέσα από αυτήν εξελίσσεται το ταλέντο σου, σε ότι και αν κάνεις. Ποιο είναι το δυνατό σημείο στο παιχνίδι σου; Θεωρώ πως είναι το μακρινό μου παιχνίδι. Επίσης έχω σταματήσει να εκνευρίζομαι όταν κάτι πάει στραβά μέσα στο γήπεδο κοιτώντας να βελτιωθώ στις τρύπες που έχουν απομείνει. Η

ψυχολογία είναι το παν. Έχεις αδυναμίες; Φυσικά, όπως όλοι έτσι και εγώ έχω τις αδυναμίες μου. Μια από αυτές είναι ότι βιάζομαι να τελειώσει το round όταν τα πηγαίνω καλά. Αυτό έχει ως αποτέλεσμα κάποιες φορές να παίρνω βιαστικές αποφάσεις και να μην αποδίδω μέσα στο γήπεδο όπως θα ήθελα. Κάθε φορά που παίζω αγώνα πλέον προσπαθώ να είμαι όσο πιο ήρεμος γίνεται. Ποιο είναι το αγωνιστικό σου πλάνο για το υπόλοιπο του 2015; Μέχρι στιγμής θα εκπροσωπήσω την Ελλάδα μαζί με την ομάδα μου στο Πανευρωπαϊκό στην Βουλγαρία στα τέλη του Ιουλίου και έπειτα πάλι με την Εθνική Ομάδα θα πάμε στην Τουρκία να ανταγωνιστούμε την τούρκικη ομάδα. Μέσα Αυγούστου έχω γραφτεί να συμμετάσχω στο Dutch Open στην Eindhoven. Το καλύτερό σου παιχνίδι έως τώρα; Θα έλεγα ότι ήταν στην Τσεχία πέρσυ το καλοκαίρι στο πανευρωπαϊκό με -1. Το χειρότερό σου; Σίγουρα στο Εuropean Young Masters τo 2008 στην Γαλλία, που ήταν ο πρώτος μου αγώνας στο εξωτερικό και επίσης πρώτος με την Εθνική ομάδα. Τι σημαίνει η Εθνική Ομάδα για σένα; Για μένα είναι μεγάλη τιμή που έχω καταφέρει να είμαι μέλος της Εθνικής Ομάδας και προσπαθώ όσο μπορώ να την βγάζω ασπροπρόσωπη. Το να μπορεί η Ελλάδα να κερδίζει στο γκολφ χώρες με πολλαπλάσιο πληθυσμό είναι κάτι που δίνει υπερηφάνεια. Τι προβλήματα αντιμετωπίζεις; Η Ομοσπονδία μας βοηθάει όσο μπορεί, δεδομένης της οικονομικής κρίσης. Εχει περιοριστεί σημαντικά η οικονομική βοήθεια που προσφέρει η πολιτεία στις αθλητικές ομοσπονδίες και στους ίδιους τους αθλητές. Πρέπει όμως να δίνονται κάποια κίνητρα, σε λογικά επίπεδα, όπου πρέπει. Θεωρώ όμως ότι για να αναδειχθώ σε διεθνές επίπεδο, το οποίο είναι ιδιαίτερα προηγμένο για τα ελληνικά δεδομένα, σίγουρα θα βοηθούσε η συμβολή ενός σπόνσορα. Όπως είναι η οικονομική κατάσταση στην Ελλάδα τους τελευταίους μήνες είναι εξουθενωτικό για όλους να μην γνωρίζεις τι πρόκριται να συμβεί. Δεν σε αφήνει να μπεις στη διαδικασία να γίνεις καλύτερος. Πως θα περιέγραφες το γκολφ στη Ελλάδα; Είμαστε σίγουρα πολύ πίσω σε σχέση με χώρες του εξωτερικού όπως Αγγλία, Ισπανία, ΗΠΑ. Στην Ελλάδα είναι κάπως παρεξηγημένο σαν άθλημα διότι δεν έχουν γίνει οι απαραίτητες ενέργειες ώστε να το γνωρίσει ο κόσμος. Ελπίζω η ιδιωτική πρωτοβουλία όπως οι επενδύσεις στη

Είναι δύσκολο να ασχοληθείς και με τα δύο σε πολύ υψηλό επίπεδο. Η αξία της εκπαίδευσης είναι βέβαια εξαιρετικά σημαντική. Το πιστεύω πραγματικά. Κάποια στιγμή όμως πρέπει να θυσιάσεις ένα από τα δύο. Ποια τα μελλοντικά σου σχέδια? Πρώτα απ'ολα να πάρω το πτυχίο μου με καλό βαθμό στα Ναυτιλιακά από το Πανεπιστήμιο Πειραιά. Μετά να κάνω μεταπτυχιακό σε πανεπιστήμιο του εξωτερικού το οποίο να διαθέτει ομάδα γκολφ. Αυτό θα μου επιτρέψει την προπόνηση μου σε υψηλό επίπεδο σε συνδυασμό με τις σπουδές μου για το καλύτερο δυνατόν αποτέλεσμα.

Where will you be playing golf in Athens?

I

s this your year? It’s definitely been one of my best so far, as I’ve made it my mission to maintain a good image at tournaments abroad, where I will be representing Greece with our National Team. My main goal is to help the National Team achieve a good ranking in the European Championship. On a personal level, I hope to win one of the prizes.

When did you first start playing golf?

My parents signed me up for many sports when I was a child. My father suggested I learn golf, and we often played together. He remains one of my staunchest supporters.

Which tournaments have you participated in so far? In all the Panhellenic Tournaments that have been held in Greece as well as several other events on courses throughout the country.

I also took part in the Faldo Series Grand Final in the USA, and the World Championship held in Japan in September 2014. Moreover, I’ve participated in European Championships and various international events abroad with my team.

How do you train? It depends on the time available before a tournament. As the date approaches, I focus my attention on training on the course rather than on the driving range. In winter, when there aren’t so many championships on the calendar, I have the time to work on my technique.

How many hours do you train daily? I don’t have enough time to train daily because of University, unfortunately. I usually go 5 times during the week, including weekends. I don’t take note of how long I train, I just don’t leave until I’m happy with the result of my practice session.

How do you define the concept of talent? I believe talent is the ability to accept stimuli and assimilate them more quickly than others. Not only in sports, but in everything you do. It is something you’re born with. However, the will to succeed is also a very important factor.

It is through this will that your talent develops.

Do you have any idols? Tiger Woods, of course. And Billy Horschel and Thomas Detry, a Belgian player with whom I played in the World Championship in Japan. He is in the top 20 amateurs worldwide.

What is your strongest point? My long game, I think. I’ve also stopped getting frustrated when something goes wrong on the course and try to improve my performance on the remaining holes. Psychology is everything.

Do you have any weaknesses? Of course.

I have my weaknesses just like everyone else.

One is that I often rush to finish a round when I’m playing well. This results in sometimes making rash decisions and not finishing as strong as I

would like. Each time I compete now, I try to stay as calm as possible.

Which events do you plan to compete in this year? I will be representing Greece with my team at the European Championship held in Bulgaria at the end of July and then the National Team and I will be going to Turkey to face the Turkish team. In mid August, I will be participating in the Dutch Open held in Eindhoven.

What was your best score to date? Last year at the European Championship in the Czech Republic, when I finished with -1.

And your worst? At the 2008 European Young Masters in France, which was my first championship abroad wearing the colours of Greece.

How do you feel about the National Team? It is a great honour to be a member of the National Team and I do my best to represent it well. The fact that Greece can emerge a victor in golf over countries with a much larger population than ours fills me with pride.

Have you encountered any problems?

The Federation helps us as much as it can, given the current financial crisis. Financial assistance from the State to sports federations and athletes themselves has decreased significantly. Nonetheless, some reasonable incentives should still be offered.

I believe that in order to make a name on an international level, which is very advanced by Greek standards, I would benefit from the advice of a sponsor. The financial situation in Greece in recent months is tremendously draining, as nobody knows what is going to happen. It doesn’t allow you the breathing space to make plans for improvement.

How would you describe golf in Greece?

We are definitely behind countries such as the United Kingdom, Spain and the USA. In Greece, golf is somewhat misunderstood as a sport because the necessary actions to introduce it to the public haven’t been made. I have hopes that private initiatives, such as investment in Costa Navarino, to promote golf in Greece as a tourism destination are successful.

Does your university education allow you the time to compete? It is difficult to do two things well at the same time. The value of a good education is very important. I truly believe that. At some point however, you need to sacrifice one or the other.

What are you plans for the future? My first goal is to get a good mark on my Shipping Degree from the University of Piraeus. Afterwards, I hope to get my Master’s from a university abroad that has a golf team. This will allow me to train at a high level in conjunction with my studies, producing the best possible result.

Χάρη στο ρυθμιζόμενο μήκος καρίνας το βύθισμα κυμαίνεται από 4,30 έως 12,30 μέτρα. Ο σχεδιασμός έγινε από τους ναυπηγούς της Perini Navi σε συνεργασία με το Νεοζηλανδό Ron Holland. Με ιστιοφορία τύπου ketch, το σκάφος φέρει δύο αλουμινένια κατάρτια 62 και 52 μέτρων και η συνολική επιφάνεια των πανιών αγγίζει τα 2.125m2. Οι μάτσες και οι σταυροί είναι από ανθρακόνημα, όπως επίσης τα πτερύγια, οι πρότονοι και οι διαγώνιοι. Επίσης, για πρώτη φορά χρησιμοποιήθηκε σε Perini Navi τύπου ketch ανθρακόνημα για τα σταθερά άρμενα. eahawk features a sleek hull and superstructure in aluminium with gross tonnage of under 500 GT and a displacement of 570 tons.

Thanks to the variable keel length the draught ranges from 4.30 to 12.30m. Designed by the naval architects at Perini Navi in collaboration with Ron Holland from New Zealand, the ketch has a total sail plan area of 2,125m2 featuring two aluminium masts of 62m and 52m. The booms and spreaders are made of carbon fibre as are the foils, head-stays and diagonals.

Moreover, for the first time on a Perini Navi ketch, carbon fibre has also been used for the standing rigging.

On the foredeck a new generation of fully recessed furlers for the head sails has been created by the Perini Navi Mast Division which has also developed the new captive winches installed onboard to increase manoeuvring power and speed.

Penned by French designer Christian Liaigre, the interior has a refined and extremely elegant contemporary charm paired with traditional nautical touches. The three principal areas on Seahawk’s main deck - dining room, living room and office are planned around a staircase, an element that unites the three levels of the yacht. The lower deck has four en suite guest cabins and a full-beam owner’s suite whose original layout features two double beds placed diagonally across from each other and sliding walls that can be closed to divide the suite into two for charter use.

Mε βάση τον πιο πρόσφατο κατάλογο του 2012 τα Μνημεία Παγκόσμιας Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της ΟΥΝΕΣΚO ανά τον κόσμο είναι 951. Εξ αυτών τα 739 είναι πολιτιστικά μνημεία, 183 φυσικά και 29 μικτά, σε 155 συνολικά κράτη μέλη της ΟΥΝΕΣΚΟ. Η Ελλάδα έχει συνυπογράψει από το 1981 τη Συνθήκη της UNESCO για την προστασία των μνημείων και χώρων παγκόσμιας κληρονομιάς. Από τότε και μέχρι σήμερα, έχουν ενταχθεί 17 ελληνικά μνημεία και χώροι, στη λίστα των μνημείων Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς της UNESCO. Έξι από αυτά βρίσκονται στη Πελοπόννησο και σας τα παρουσιάζουμε.

Στην ενδοχώρα της Επιδαύρου, σε μία περιοχή με ήπιο κλίμα και άφθονα πηγαία ιαματικά νερά, βρισκόταν το Ασκληπιείο, η έδρα του θεού ιατρού της αρχαιότητας και το σημαντικότερο θεραπευτικό κέντρο όλου του ελληνικού και ρωμαϊκού κόσμου. Ήταν το κύριο ιερό της μικρής παραθαλάσσιας πόλης της Επιδαύρου, αλλά η φήμη του και η αναγνώριση της σημασίας του γρήγορα ξεπέρασαν τα όρια της Αργολίδας και θεωρήθηκε από όλους τους Έλληνες ο τόπος όπου γεννήθηκε η ιατρική. Τα μνημεία του αποτελούν σήμερα όχι μόνο παγκοσμίου φήμης αριστουργήματα της αρχαίας ελληνικής τέχνης, αλλά και εξαιρετική μαρτυρία για την άσκηση της ιατρικής στην αρχαιότητα. Σε αυτά αποτυπώθηκε η εξέλιξη της ιατρικής από τη φάση κατά την οποία η ίαση εξαρτιόταν αποκλειστικά από το θεό έως τη μετατροπή της σε επιστήμη, με τη συστηματική καταγραφή περιστατικών και τη σταδιακή συγκέντρωση γνώσης και πείρας.

Ναός Επικουρείου Απόλλωνα Στο κέντρο της Πελοποννήσου, στις Βάσσες της αρχαίας Φιγαλείας, σε υψόμετρο 1130 μέτρων στέκει αγέρωχος και αειθαλής ο ναός του Επικούριου Απόλλωνα. Ο ναός του Επικούριου Απόλλωνα είναι το πρώτο ελληνικό μνημείο που συμπεριελήφθη στον κατάλογο της Παγκόσμιας Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της UNESCO το 1986 με τον ακόλουθο σχολιασμό: «Ο διάσημος ναός αφιερωμένος στο θεό του ήλιου και της ίασης των ασθενειών κτίστηκε γύρω στα μέσα του 5ου αι. π.Χ. στα υψίπεδα των Αρκαδικών βουνών. Ο ναός με το αρχαιότερο

κορινθιακό κιονόκρανο που έχει βρεθεί μέχρι τώρα συνδυάζει το αρχαϊκό ύφος και το δωρικό ρυθμό με ορισμένα καινοτόμα αρχιτεκτονικά στοιχεία.» Εμπνευστής και κατασκευαστής του ναού θεωρείται ο Ικτίνος, μέγας αρχιτέκτονας της αρχαιότητας, που μαζί με τον Καλλικράτη σχεδίασε τον Παρθενώνα. Οι Βάσσες υπήρξαν πάντα σεπτός τόπος, που φιλοξένησε πλήθος ιερών. Το όνομα της περιοχής σημαίνει «μικρές κοιλάδες». Πράγματι, τα όρη της πελοποννησιακής γης δημιουργούν ένα μαγευτικό ανάγλυφο και ανάμεσα τους ξεπροβάλλει το επιβλητικό τοπίο του ναού. Τα όρη Κοτύλιο, Λύκαιο, Τετράζιο και Ελάιο ορθώνονται προστατευτικά γύρω από την κοιλάδα των Βασσών. Σε αυτό το φυσικό καταφύγιο λατρεύτηκαν όλοι οι θεοί της αρχαιότητας -ο Πάνας, η Αφροδίτη, η Άρτεμις και, βέβαια, ο Απόλλωνας, ως Βασσίτας και ως Επικούριος, δηλαδή βοηθός- και εδώ έμελλε να αναγερθεί ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα λατρευτικά κέντρα ολόκληρου του ελληνισμού. Ο Παυσανίας, ο οποίος έφτασε τον 2ο αιώνα μ.Χ. στις Βάσσες, έμεινε έκθαμβος μπροστά στο μεγαλείο και τη δύναμή του. Εικάζεται πως η κεντρική στήλη του ναού αντανακλούσε την πρώτη ακτίνα του θερινού ηλιοστασίου, αντιπροσωπεύοντας το αιώνιο απολλώνιο φως. Αν αυτό είναι αλήθεια, τότε πρόκειται για το πρώτο ανεικονικό, αφηρημένης σύλληψης, άγαλμα στην ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας. Τον ναό μπορείτε να προσεγγίσετε από την Ηλεία, μετά από μια μαγευτική διαδρομή δίπλα στον ρου του ποταμού Νέδα, ή από την Τρίπολη και τη Μεγαλόπολη.

Μυστράς Η βυζαντινή καστροπολιτεία της Πελοποννήσου, αλώβητη από το χρόνο, γοητεύει με την ακαταμάχητη ατμόσφαιρα που δημιουργούν τα υπέροχα μνημεία της: τα «Παλάτια των Παλαιολόγων», οι κατοικίες των ευγενών (Λάσκαρη, Φραγκόπουλου), οι επιβλητικές εκκλησίες (Αγίου Δημητρίου, Παντάνασσας) και τα μοναστήρια (Περιβλέπτου, Βροντοχίου) συνθέτουν ένα σκηνικό μεγαλείου αλλοτινών εποχών. Όταν περιπλανιέται κανείς στις συνοικίες του Μυστρά, στο Κάστρο, στη Μεσοχώρα και στην Έξω Χώρα, νομίζει ότι βρίσκεται σε ένα σκηνικό παραμυθιού: βυζαντινοί πρίγκιπες, αρχοντόπουλα και δεσποσύνες με την ακολουθία τους να ξεπροβάλλουν από τα πλούσια αρχοντόσπιτα, ξένες αντιπροσωπείες να κατευθύνονται προς τα ανάκτορα για να υποβάλλουν τα σέβη τους στον ηγεμόνα της πολιτείας, το λαό να συρρέει στους δρόμους, μια εικόνα ονειρική βγαλμένη από το βυζαντινό παρελθόν. Ο αρχαιολογικός χώρος του Μυστρά, αποτελεί ένα από τα λίγα καλά διατηρημένα βυζαντινά οικιστικά σύνολα για τη μελέτη και την κατανόηση της βυζαντινής αρχιτεκτονικής-κοσμικής και εκκλησιαστικής- και τέχνης. Στον τόπο αυτό, που αποτέλεσε κέντρο σπουδαίο σε ολόκληρη την υστεροβυζαντινή περίοδο, έζησαν σημαντικές προσωπικότητες του Μεσαίωνα, που έπαιξαν ρόλο καταλυτικό στην ανανέωση των ελληνικών σπουδών στη Δύση και στην εμβάθυνση σε αυτές, συμβάλλοντας έτσι στη ραγδαία ανάπτυξη των επιστημών, της φιλοσοφίας και της τέχνης στην Ευρώπη λίγο πριν από την πτώση της Αυτοκρατο-

Μια βόλτα στο εντυπωσιακό μουσείο, διώροφο πέτρινο κτίριο του 1754, ολοκληρώνει κατά τον καλύτερο τρόπο την περιήγηση σε έναν από τους ωραιότερους αρχαιολογικούς χώρους του κόσμου, την καστροπολιτεία του Μυστρά.

Αρχαιολογικός χώρος Ολυμπίας Ο καλύτερος τρόπος να απολαύσεις την περιήγηση στην Ολυμπία είναι να αγωνιστείς στο στάδιο όπως οι αρχαίοι αθλητές και να νιώσεις τις δονήσεις που αποπνέει ο χώρος. Η Άλτις, το ιερό άλσος, καταλαμβάνει το κεντρικό τμήμα και μέσα σε αυτή αναπτύσσεται ο πυρήνας του Ιερού, με τους ναούς, τους θησαυρούς και τα σημαντικότερα κτήρια του χώρου. Σε περίοπτη θέση μέσα στον ιερό χώρο δεσπόζει ο γιγάντιος ναός του Δία και βορειότερα ο παλαιότερος ναός της Ήρας. Ο υπόλοιπος χώρος μέσα στον περίβολο ήταν γεμάτος από βωμούς, αγάλματα θεών και ηρώων, ανδριάντες των Ολυμπιονικών, αφιερώματα επιφανών ιδιωτών και ελληνικών πόλεων. Στο δυτικό τμήμα του χώρου υπάρχουν κτήρια που εξυπηρετούσαν το προσωπικό του ιερού, τους αθλητές και τους επίσημους επισκέπτες και χωρίζονται από την Άλτι με την ιερά οδό: το γυμνάσιο και η παλαίστρα, χώροι προπόνησης, το εργαστήριο του Φειδία, που στα παλαιοχριστιανικά χρόνια μετατράπηκε σε βασιλική, τα ελληνικά λουτρά, οι ρωμαϊκές θέρμες, το Λεωνιδαίο, που ήταν ξενώνας για τους επισήμους, και οι μεταγενέστεροι ρωμαϊκοί ξενώνες. Ανατολικά της Άλτεως εκτείνεται το στάδιο, όπου τελούνταν οι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες. Νότια του σταδίου υπήρχε και ο ιππόδρομος, από τον οποίο σήμερα δεν σώζεται κανένα ίχνος, διότι έχει παρασυρθεί από τον Αλφειό ποταμό. Στην ίδια περιοχή υπάρχουν κτηριακά συγκροτήματα λουτρών και επαύλεων, όπως η περίφημη έπαυλη που έκτισε ο Νέρων. Μυκήνες – η πόλη του μυθικού Αγαμέμνονα

Η οχύρωση του λόφου της Τίρυνθας (στο 8ο χλμ. του δρόμου Άργους – Ναυπλίου), που προφυλάσσει το ανακτορικό συγκρότημα, είναι τόσο εντυπωσιακή κατασκευή, ώστε οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες δεν μπορούσαν να δεχτούν ότι ολοκληρώθηκε από ανθρώπινο χέρι. Έτσι, αρχιτέκτονες της Τίρυνθας θεωρήθηκαν οι Κύκλωπες, που έφερε μαζί του από τη μακρινή Λυκία ο μυθικός ιδρυτής της πόλης, ο Προίτος. Στέκεται κανείς εκστατικός μπροστά στην τέλεια συναρμογή αυτών των τεράστιων ογκόλιθων, μη μπορώντας να κατανοήσει ούτε πώς, ούτε ποιοι μπόρεσαν να πραγματοποιήσουν τέτοιον μηχανικό άθλο. Το κυκλικό κτήριο με τα 27 μέτρα διάμετρο, που δεσπόζει στην κορυφή του λόφου, δηλώνει αδιάψευστα τη δύναμη της πόλης. Η οχύρωση της Τίρυνθας ολοκληρώθηκε σταδιακά για να προστατεύσει το ανακτορικό συγκρότημα, τους λατρευτικούς χώρους και τα ταφικά μνημεία. Αποθήκες, εργαστήρια και κατοικίες συμπληρώνουν την εικόνα μιας πόλης που άνθισε για κοντά 2000 χρόνια, μέχρι τον 5ο αιώνα π.Χ. Η γνωριμία με τον Μυκηναϊκό πολιτισμό είναι μια κατάβαση στο βάθος της ανθρώπινης ιστορίας. Αντικρίζοντας τις Μυκήνες και την Τίρυνθα, η αίσθηση του χρόνου χάνεται. Ο Όμηρος και η αρχαία ελληνική τραγωδία διέσωσαν ονόματα και μνήμες που έχουν περάσει στο συλλογικό ασυνείδητο της ανθρωπότητας. Ο Αγαμέμνονας και ο Μενέλαος, η Δανάη και ο Περσέας, ο Ατρέας και ο Πέλοπας, φαντάζουν προπάτορες όλης της Ευρώπης. Γενέθλια γη όλων αυτών των προσωπικοτήτων, οι Μυκήνες. Η μεγάλη ακμή των Μυκηνών, με τη μεγαλειώδη αρχιτεκτονική, τα γραπτά μνημεία και τον εκλεπτυσμένο πολιτισμό, ήταν στην ύστερη Εποχή του Χαλκού, ανάμεσα στο 1350 και το 1200 π.Χ. Οι πρώτες ηγεμονικές φατρίες εμφανίστηκαν ήδη από το 1700 π.Χ., σε δυσθεώρητο δηλαδή ιστορικό βάθος. Τότε είναι που κατασκευάζονται οι πρώτοι μνημειώδεις τάφοι. Από κει και πέρα, η εξέλιξη είναι ιλιγγιώδης. Ανακτορικά συγκροτήματα, κυκλώπεια τείχη που προκαλούν και σήμερα δέος, ο γνωστός «Τάφος («Θησαυρός») του Ατρέα», τα τεράστια υπέρθυρα, οι κρήνες και οι προμαχώνες συγκροτούν ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα αρχιτεκτονικά συμπλέγματα που γνώρισε ο αρχαίος κόσμος. The Mycenaean civilisation settled on the Peloponnese, the first Olympic Games were held at Ancient Olympia, the first theatrical performances were held at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. A cultural heritage whose unmatched creations travelled through the centuries, revealing the splendour of the Ancient Greek spirit. According to the 2012 catalogue of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, there are 951 sites worldwide. Greece signed the UNESCO treaty in 1981, agreeing to protect its monuments and world heritage sites. In central Peloponnese, at Vasses of ancient Figaleia, at an elevation of 1.130 metres, stands the eternally proud temple of Apollo Epicurius.

The most famous architect of the ancient times, Ictinus, who along with Kallikrates designed the Parthenon, is known to have conceived and designed this magnificent edifice. This universal architectural gem was the first of the great monuments of Greece to be recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1986. Vasses (ancient Bassae) was always considered sacred, ass it combrises several temples.

The region’s name means "little valleys". And indeed, the mountainous Peloponnesian land creates a magical landscape and within it rises the imposing landscape of the temple. The mountains of Kotylio, Lykaio, Tetrazio and Elaio engulf the valley of Vasses. All the gods of antiquity - Pan,

Aphrodite, Artemis, and of course, Apollo, as both ‘Vassitas’ and ‘Epicurius’, that is, “the helper” were worshipped in this natural sanctuary, and it was here that one of the greatest religious centres of the entire of Hellenic world was to be erected.

Pausanias, the great traveller and geographer, who arrived in Vasses in the 2nd century AD, sand was stunned by its imposing character and majestic presence. It is speculated that the central column of the temple was designed to reflect the first rays of the summer solstice, symbolizing the eternal light of the sun god, Apollo. If this is true, then this is the first large scale sculptured work of art in the history of mankind to represent an abstract concept. The temple can be approached from Ilia, after an enchanting journey along the banks of the river Neda, or from Tripoli and Megalopolis.

Olympia Archaeological Site According to the World Heritage website, there is probably no ancient archaeological site anywhere in the world that has more relevance to today΄s world than Olympia. The stadium of Olympia, where the ancient Olympic Games were held, and the impressive temple of Zeus, the largest temple in the Peloponnese, are some of the attractions of the site. The best way to get the most out of your visit is to actually race in the stadium like the athletes used to do and feel the vibes! The Altis, the sacred enclosure and core of the sanctuary, with its temples, buildings and treasuries, occupies the centre of the site. The Classical Temple of Zeus and the earlier Temple of Hera dominate the Altis.

The remaining space inside the Altis was filled with numerous altars and statues of gods, heroes and Olympic winners offered by Greek cities or wealthy individuals, such as the Nike of Paionios.

Outside the sacred precinct of the Altis, to its south, are the Bouleutherion and the South Stoa, the southernmost building of the greater sanctuary and its main entrance from the south. West of the Altis and separated from it by the Sacred Road is a series of buildings for the sanctuary personnel, the athletes and the distinguished visitors: the gymnasium and palaestra, exercise grounds, the Workshop of Pheidias which in Late Antiquity was transformed into a Christian church, the Greek

baths with their swimming pool, the Roman hot baths, the Theokoleion or priests' residence, the Leonidaion or officials' quarters, and the Roman hostels. East of the Altis lies the stadium where the Olympic Games were held. South of the stadium was the hippodrome, of which no trace remains as it was swept away by the Alpheios river. South of the hippodrome is a group of mansions and baths, including the famous House of Nero, built by the emperor for his stay at Olympia during his participation in the games.

In 1829 the French Scientific Expedition of the Peloponnese partially excavated the Temple of Zeus, taking several fragments of the pediments to the Musee du Louvre.

Mycenae – the city of the legendary Agamemnon Homer and other writers of ancient Greek tragedy helped salvage memories and moments which have passed into the collective unconscious of humanity. Agamemnon and Menelaus, Danaë and Perseus, Pelops and Atreus are the apparent forefathers of all of Europe, and the birthplace of all of these historical figures, is Mycenae. The apogee of the Mycenaean's, with their majestic architecture, inscribed monuments and sophisticated civilisation, occurred in the Late Bronze Age, between 1350 and 1200 BC. The first hegemonic factions appeared as early as 1700 BC, that is, in an historical period for which is difficult to determine exact details. But around this same period construction began on the first monumental tombs. After this, expansion developed at a very fast pace. Palatial complexes, Cyclopean masonry which is awe-inspiring even today, the famous "Tomb of Agamemnon” (also known as the "Treasury of Atreus”), huge arches, fountains and ramparts comprise one of the greatest architectural complexes

known to the ancient world. The decline of Mycenae occurred around 1100 BC, possibly due to repeated damage from earthquakes and fires. They had managed, however, to have once been a truly great empire, which indelibly left its mark on the history not only of Greece, but the entire world. The archaeological site of Mycenae is 140km from Athens and 24km from Nafplio.

Tiryns – a city built by the Cyclopes The fortification of the hill of Tiryns (8km from Argos) which protects the palace complex, is such an impressive structure that the ancient Greeks could not believe it was built by human hands. Legend has it that the architects of Tiryns the Cyclopes, who came to the city with Proetus, its legendary founder, from distant Lycia. Τhe construction of the wall is impressive and challenge logic, even for today’s visitors. One stands in awe in front of the perfect assembly of these huge boulders, unable to understand either how or who could have performed such a great feat of engineering. The circular building, 27 metres in diameter which dominates the hilltop, bears witness to the undeniable power of the city. The fortifications of Tiryns were completed in stages, to protect the palace complex, their places of worship and burial sites. Warehouses, workshops and houses complement the city which flourished for almost 2000 years, until the 5th century BC. Becoming familiar with Mycenaean civilisation involves a descent into the deepest reaches of human history. Looking at Mycenae and Tiryns, one loses all sense of time. Legend and history intertwine in a dreamlike motif. The gods, already immortalised by name in the Mycenaean syllabic inscriptions, seem somehow familiar. The heroes still walk the citadel of Mycenae, guardians of a past gone but not forgotten.

The Bay Course –Costa Navarino, Messinia

Porto Carras Golf -Halkidiki

Just a few minutes from Navarino Dunes, at the Navarino Bay development, the Bay Course offers an alternative set of challenges and choices in a quite different setting. Designed by leading American architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., it plays a little shorter than the Dunes Course at 5,760metres from the back tees.

The Porto Carras Grand Resort is located on the Halkidiki peninsula about 50 miles south of the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece. The course started out as 9-hole, designed by Geoffrey Cornish and William Robinson, but was redesigned in 2003 by Roy Machary and opened the following year as an 18-hole par 71 course. The Porto Carras Golf Course has a brand new clubhouse, practice range and practice green.

The Crete Golf Club

Afandou Golf Course, Rhodes

The Crete Golf Club is a relatively recent creation, about 16 miles east of Heraklion airport and surrounded by posh hotels, so it’s pretty easy of access.

Opened in October 2003, it’s a year-round course, 18-hole par, designed by PGA Design Consulting of Great Britain. The course includes a double-ended 300-yard covered driving range with a short game area and two practice putting greens. It also has a golf academy for teenagers and adults. There is a club house with snack bar, a pro shop and a cafe. The Crete Golf Club collaborates with more than forty hotel partners that provi.

The 18-hole par 73 course was designed by Donald Harradine and opened in May 1973. Open all year round, the Afandou Golf Club can supply you with caddies, caddy carts, golf clubs and balls for a very reasonable rental fee.

Facilities include a club house with pro shop, snack bar, men’s and ladies’ locker rooms, a putting green and driving range. In July 2007 the Afandou Golf Course hosted the golfing events of the International Island Games Athletic Competition.

Glyfada Golf Course, Athens This is the oldest and most distinguished – and was for a long time the only – Greek golf course of any worth. w The18-hole par 72 course, designed by Donald Harradine, opened in 1966 and has continually hosted international events. Corfu Golf Club

Porto Elounda Golf Club-Crete

The Corfu Golf Course is 18-hole par 72, located in the Ropa Valley in the centre of the island of Corfu. Its rolling green hills and lush landscape makes it one of the most scenic courses in Europe. Golf is played throughout the year with plenty of warm sunshine and blue skies. Designed by Donald Harradine, it opened in 1973. Now under British management, the Corfu Golf Club has a junior academy for children from 8 to 16 years of age.

Facilities include a stone clubhouse which features a bar, a restaurant, locker rooms, and a pro shop. There is also a driving range and a putting green.

Ropa Valley

The Porto Elounda Golf Course is Crete’s second, located at the Porto Elounda De Luxe Resort on the northeast coast. Nestling in a hillside, the 9-hole course, with the mountains as a backdrop, blends with its surroundings, offering a spectacular view of the Bay of Mirabello. The course, designed by Chris Pittman, opened in 1996. The clubhouse is set in a picturesque Cretan village square and contains a pro shop and golf academy.
