ABOUT CEU With three campuses and over 50 academic programs, CEU has gone far beyond its founders’ vision, laying claim to the distinction as the higher education institution to have the institutional awards for quality.

CEU was founded on June 3, 1907 as the “Centro Escolar de Señoritas” by two visionaries, Librada Avelino and Carmen de Luna, who were inspired by the patriotic movement to nationalize schools. They were cognizant of a need for a center of learning for Filipino women focused on teaching ideal womanhood, intelligent citizenry and democratic leadership that would instill in them the tenets of science and virtue. Kindergarten, elementary, general secondary, music and home arts courses were the first programs of instruction included in the curriculum.

The school was granted university status by the Philippine government in 1932 with Doña Librada as President.

With the recently concluded academic year having proved to be a bountiful one, we are now ready to savor the fruits of our labor: the great pink harvest of CEU. For the first time since the pandemic, our graduates will once again grace the Fiesta Pavilion of The Manila Hotel with their beaming and proud families for the in-person graduation ceremonies on July 26-28.

In a historic and remarkable feat, the graduating class of 2022 will be led by more than two-hundred Latin awardees and medallists from the different schools and departments of the university’s three campuses.

Also, another first for this year’s commencement exercises will be the joint ceremonies for the Manila, Makati, and Malolos campuses.

It really is indeed a pink harvest, for there are eight graduates who qualified as Summa Cum Laude from three campuses. They are Maria Teresa M. Mejillano [BSITTM (ABM)] of CEU Manila, Hanz Stephen K. Ortea [BSBAMGT (ABM)] of CEU Makati, and six from CEU Malolos namely Jeanette L. Garvida (BACM), Danica Marie R. Salonga (BACM), Crisel Marie C. Alinsod (BSITTM), Ricky Gabriel R. Catindig (BSITTM), Allysa Marie M. Martin (BACM), and Desiree Ann C. Balagtas (BSITTM).

The Escolarian tradition of graduation send-off will also be part of this series of celebrations. The annual baccalaureate mass for the graduating students will be held on their respective campuses; July 20 for CEU Manila and CEU Malolos, and July 22 for CEU Makati. The penultimate affair, the much anticipated 83rd Sampaguita Interlude, will once again be broadcasted online via CEU’s official social media channels. This will be on July 20 for CEU Malolos and on July 22 for the Manila and Makati campuses.

Then the three-day in-person graduation ceremonies will be divided into ten clusters and commencement speakers with highly sought accolades are invited. May their shared experiences and thoughts inspire the newly graduate Escolorians.

And as Marie Curie said, “We must have perseverance and, above all, confidence in ourselves. We must believe we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.”

What it means to be

ABOVE THE LINE

T

he Centro Escolar University Manila Recognition Day—an annual celebration of perseverance, wisdom and excellence of Escolarians—was held last June 25, 2022 via Streamyard, Facebook and YouTube with the theme: Above the Line. The theme of this year’s recognition day represents the high caliber skills of the students of CEU Manila, and how beyond all the achievements and accolades received, they would still be firmly grounded in virtue perfectly embodying the University’s twin maxim of Science and Virtue.

The event started with a bang, courtesy of the energy and joy the two Masters of Ceremony brought to the whole community.

Cheska Carreon from the School of Dentistry and Symoun Ong from the School of Education, Liberal Arts, Music, Social work were an exceptional tandem who knew very well how to connect with the audience albeit virtually.

Following their warm welcoming, Dr. Ma. Cristina D. Padolina, University President and Chief Academic Officer, gave the inspirational message which was centered in the song My Way as she recognized the strength and character of all Escolarians.

The most awaited part of the event is the Awarding of Certificates for Co-Curricular and Extracurricular Activities. This segment is a symbol of the Escolarians’ grit all throughout the school year, balancing their academic and non-academic work. The members of the different Cultural Groups in campus were also recognized namely: the CEU Singers Manila, the CEU Folk Dance Troupe, and the CEU Concert Band for their remarkable performances exhibiting the rich culture of the Philippines.

Moreover, the pronounced varsity athletes of the University were also given due appreciation for their continuous hard work and dedication to hone their skills in the respective sports. Without a miss though, all the advisers of the different councils, organizations, groups and teams were also acknowledged for their utmost guidance and love for the students they are handling.

Indeed, the celebration would not be complete and colorful without the exhibition of various talents from the students who were all champions in the different competitions spearheaded by the University Student Council Manila this school year 2021-2022. The front act out of all the talents was Mr. PJ Sheed Olea, president of the School of Accountancy and Management Student Council with his brilliant and inspiring art poetry piece that he illustrated, wrote, and performed. Mr. Olea was the champion of the recently concluded USC

Weekends 2022 Tanghalan, Ang Larawan Art Poetry competition. Mr. Aiken Villanueva from the School of Optometry did a wonderful and motivating rendition of Demi Lovato’s hit song, Skyscraper. He won first place in the Singing Competition of the same event. The University Student Council Manila officers also performed an uplifting song entitled You Will Be Found that serves as an embrace to their fellow students sending a message that as we reach another end line, they will never be alone in the journey of life. One will always be found in the presence of the loving Father and a nurturing community like Centro Escolar. Finally, the last act of talents was the CEU Pep Squad with their astounding competition piece.

As a tradition, the University also presented the certificate for the finalists and winners of the various searches for the Recognition Day. All the participants underwent an intensive screening process to win their title. This year, the Hall of Fame Award was also given to the organization that has won the search for four consecutive years now. With that said, the winners of the searches are the following:

CEU Law produces 59 lawyers, registers 75-percent passing rate in 2020/2021 Bar Exams

T

he CEU School of Law and Jurisprudence scored a 75.64-percent passing rate in the recently announced results of the 2020/2021 Bar Examinations, as compared to the 72-percent national passing rate.

This feat translates to 59 newly-minted Escolarian lawyers who came from the two batches of CEU Law graduates. Two of the 59 new attorneys passed the exams with Exemplary Performance, obtaining a grade of 85 and higher; they are Atty. Angela Marie A. Almalbis, the 2020 Class Valedictorian, and Atty. Rubie N. Tolentino.

The first-ever digitalized Bar exam Dubbed as the #BestBarEver by the Bar Chairperson, Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, the 2020/2021 Bar Examinations were conducted last February 4 and 6, 2022, under an unprecedented global pandemic that led to the full digitalization of the said exam. “[The 2020/2021 Bar Examinations] were conducted under challenging circumstances

never before faced by any bar examinee, let alone any bar chairperson. This Court creatively adjusted and conducted these qualifying examinations with very critical reforms,” Justice Leonen said in his statement during the April 12 announcement.

The Supreme Court-administered qualifying exam is the first-ever digitalized Bar examination, veering away from the traditional handwriting exam. It also took place in 29 testing sites located in 22 local government units in the country. It was also the first time the exam was conducted for two days instead of the monthlong four Sunday exams.

‘Sui generis’ batch Leonen added that this year’s bar takers were an extraordinary batch, going through “not only several waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also a super typhoon that battered the Visayas region, and the uncertainties brought about by the effects of the pandemic and adjustments of its corresponding health regulations.”

“Again, let me underscore and acknowledge: Never before did bar examinees face the uncertainties they did for these bar examinations. Anxiety was universal. You only need to ask any lawyer who went through the bar examinations under conventional circumstances to understand that the difficulties of review and uncertainty that this batch went through were sui generis and far more than what others, during their time, went through,” Leonen emphasized.

Julian Rodrigo Dela Cruz, congratulates the new Escolarian lawyers for hurdling the Bar Exams, considered one of the most difficult in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, the administration reminds those who did not make it, through its official Facebook page, that “[CEU Law] will continue to help and support [them] up to the time that [they] will get [the title] ATTY.”

CEU School of Pharmacy named National Patient Counseling 2022 Champion

T

he Federation of Junior Chapters of the Philippine Pharmacists Association, in partnership with Our Lady of Fatima University – College of Pharmacy and Young Pharmacists Group (YPG) Philippines, hosted this year’s Patient Counseling Event with the theme, “Promoting a better Pharmacist-Patient Relationship.” The First Virtual National Patient Counseling Event was held via Zoom last April 20, 2022, for the elimination round and the final round was held on April 29, 2022. The patient counselors and counseling assistants were oriented about the case in the preparation room and were given five minutes to prepare and gather their references. In the counseling room, the patient counselor was given five minutes to conduct the patient counseling session with the acting patient.

Out of the 20 participating schools who joined the competition, only six exceptional teams qualified in the final round. The finalists included University of San Agustin, Negros Oriental State University, University of Makati, St. Paul University Philippines, Centro Escolar University - Manila, and

University of the Philippines - Manila. The judges then determined the winner, first runner-up, and second runner-up. The final score was computed from the combined scores of the elimination and final rounds with 40% coming from the elimination round and 60% from the final round.

This year’s winners were the University of Makati, 2nd runner up; Negros Oriental State University, 1st runner up and Centro Escolar University - Manila, Champion.

CEU-School of Pharmacy’s Centennial Year Celebration, A Legacy of Excellence: Shaping Opportunities in Pharmacy

I

n June 1921, the School of Pharmacy (SOP) began with a 3-year Pharmaceutical Chemist course and initial enrolment of 19 students.

Celebrating its 100th anniversary with the theme, “A Legacy of Excellence: Shaping Opportunities in Pharmacy,” faculty, staff, students and alumni have gathered as a community to remember and reflect on the achievements of the school’s long and proud history.

The year-long celebration formally started with a virtual Opening Ceremony last June, 5 2021 via YouTube Premiere. Special guests and dignitaries from various fields of the pharmacy profession were welcomed and expressed their congratulatory messages for the school.

Dr. Olivia M. Limuaco, the former dean of the School of Pharmacy for 23 years, and currently CEU Makati vice president, was the keynote speaker for this event. Various alumni all over the world also gave heartfelt messages and shared what the School has meant to them in their lives. The distinguishing mark of the school could be found in thousands of individuals who formed the SOP family – its students, staff, faculty, alumni. During the program, video presentations featured memories from the last century, honored members both past and present, and revealed details for the year-long celebration. The event concluded with a closing remark by Dr. Cecilia D. Santiago, the current dean of the School of Pharmacy. It was remarkable day honoring the past and celebrating the future as the community commemorated the School’s centennial year.

In the pandemic years that forced people to engage at a distance, a virtual concert with the theme “Play On: We Rise Together @ 100” was organized on December 18, 2021 to draw the SOP community together and be reminded of the immense and diverse talents of Pharmacy students. This was a way of sharing the message of hope and resiliency among the audience. The event was highlighted by the interactive performance of the Filipino rock band, The Itchyworms, delivering a riveting music experience. Gifting the audience with musical and dance renditions are the selected students from three CEU campuses. It was a night of fun and entertainment.

The centennial festivities continued with CEU-School of Pharmacy staging its 1st Pharmacy Research Congress with the theme “R.I.S.E. - Revolutionize Innovations in Science and Education” on February 5, 12, and 19, 2022 via Zoom Webinar and Facebook Live. This three-session event brought together a unique and international mix of experts, researchers, professionals and students to exchange and share their experiences and research outcomes on the field of pharmacy. The first session featured the role of COVID-19 pandemic in accelerating opportunities for new models of pharmacy profession across the world. Speakers

talked about the impact of COVID-19 on pharmacy management and compliance, the digital transformation in pharmacy education with a pandemic as the accelerant and the role of pharmacists in accelerating SDGs after the COVID-19 Pandemic. The second session showcased how research is revolutionized in the pharmacy profession, as shared by experts and distinguished speakers from different fields of practice. Oral and poster presentations had also stirred the interest of the audience and led to more intent discussion about the research being presented. For the third and final session,

the CEU-School of Pharmacy invited its alumni to share recent trends and development in their field of practice and how educators can adapt to respond to increased healthcare needs.

Overall, the 1st Pharmacy Research Congress was a historical meeting that shaped the future of pharmacy education and how graduates will integrate into practice.

Students and staff may have become burdened with the online setup due to pandemic and may tend to neglect themselves including their physical wellness. To recognize this, the School organized a virtual Zumba dance fitness session with the theme “Zoombamazing SOP@100” on March 26, 2022 via Zoom. Led by ZIN®️ Valeriano “Winston” Abello, students and staff started with a simple warm up, proceeded with various groovy zumba dance steps, and ended with a calming cool down. CEU MAKATI: Crystal Clear @15

he Centro Escolar University Makati celebrated its 15th year anniversary with the theme, “CEU Makati: CrystalClear@15”. The year 2005 saw the birth of CEU Makati as it opened its doors in the heart of Makati City’s business district.

In January 2011, it celebrated its 5th year anniversary with a hit concert of Spongecola at the World Trade Center. Students, faculty members as well as nonteaching staff added excitement as they rendered songs and dances with the delight of the audience.

In 2015, a Fun Run was held to celebrate its 10th year.

The 15th year anniversary was supposed to be held in 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic struck globally and we were caught unaware. It was postponed then, but eventually was held the following year, August 28, 2021 through Zoom, full of surprises. I was the overall chairperson, and the co-overall chairpersons were Ms. Jean Marie I. Villanueva, Mr. Eugene Marc D. Cera III, Ms. Marienell C. Dimaano and Mr. Neil Patrick MacIntyre, with VP and Dean of Studies, Dr. Olivia M. Limuaco as consultant.

The activity was graced by the Makati Coordinating Council, Faculty and Staff, with the President and Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Ma. Cristina D. Padolina giving the Inspirational message. An audiovisual presentation was shown depicting CEU Makati through its 15 years of existence. A virtual tour of the two campuses, CEU Makati Gil Puyat and CEU Makati Legazpi Village was shown.

In the awarding ceremonies, certificates of recognition were given to the industry partners while plaques of recognition were awarded to fifteen frontliners, ten distinguished alumni and the pioneer teaching and non-teaching personnel who served CEU Makati since 2005.

Pioneer faculty and nonteaching personnel who were awarded plaques of recognition were Dr. Juana Rosa F. Martinez, the coordinator of the Guidance and Counseling Section; Mr. Ronald V. Mendoza, the coordinator of the Science Laboratories Section; Dr. Maria Corazon L. Andoy, faculty member of the Physical Sciences and Mathematics Department and head of the Student Affairs Office; Dr. Bessie L. Cruz, faculty member of the Social Sciences and Humanities Department; Dr. Dominadora I. Edulag, faculty member of the Social Sciences and Humanities Department; Mrs. Gemma Rosemarie M. Gornez, faculty member of the Psychology Department and coordinator of the Community Outreach Section; and Dr. Olivia M. Limuaco faculty member of the Pharmacy Department and Vice President and Dean of Studies of CEU Makati.

Among the year-round events conducted were the lecture series, leadership training seminars of the academic departments, and community outreach activities.

Indeed, the virtual celebration was a success and everyone was looking forward to CEU Makati@20 anniversary!

CEU Library: Bridging the gap in learning amidst the CoViD-19 pandemic

S

ince the pandemic broke out in the first quarter of 2020, we were told to observe physical distancing; that by keeping ourselves away from others, we can help break the chain of viral transmission and contribute to the collective effort in containing CoViD-19.

Upon heeding the counsel of scientists and medical experts, the Philippine government implemented strict lockdowns that prevented people from leaving their homes unnecessarily.

Similarly, our church leaders closed our places of worship as a sign of solidarity for the common good. Our schools and universities soon followed, suspending all forms of face-toface classes. In general, our country’s economy ground to a halt. For a while life stood still – a far cry from the fast-paced life that we were used to prior the pandemic. Now more than ever, we were able to spend more time within the comforts of our respective homes with our families and loved ones.

For us students, it gave us a much-needed breather – a sigh of relief - from the overwhelming pressures of our academic endeavors.

But as the days turned to weeks which dragged on for months, the euphoria and elation we had earlier turned into dread as we looked on towards an uncertain future; asking questions like “When will the CoViD-19 pandemic cease, is there an end in sight?” “What becomes of me as an Escolarian, am I studying enough?” “Am I truly ready to take on life’s challenges?”

Looking beyond ourselves, we can see on social media telltale signs of sociopathy with the proliferation of fake news and misinformation fueling our personal fears and anxieties, sending the public into disarray, and worsening our misunderstandings on issues that further divide us as a nation. As Dr. Chris Woods, a Professor of Medicine and Global Health at Duke Global Health Institute, said during an interview by Research News dated

10 April 2020, “Fear and panic become just as dangerous as the pathogen itself…” Recently, Maria Ressa, the First Filipina Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, said during her acceptance speech in Oslo last 10 December 2021, “Without facts, you can’t have truth. Without truth, you can’t have trust. Without trust, we have no shared reality, no democracy, and it becomes impossible to deal with our world’s existential problems…” Amid all these chaos, we need something to guide us towards truth. Like the compass and the astrolabe that aided Ferdinand Magellan and his expedition to reach our shores, we need tools to find our way through these confusing times. Such are provided by our libraries.

Libraries are a treasure trove of knowledge; a delight for scholars and students – and perhaps by those looking for a conducive place for a power nap. As an aspiring medical

doctor, I have to say that our CEU Library was my place of solitude. During most of my free times before the pandemic, it provided me access to its facilities and a wide array of learning materials such as books, journals and published scientific and medical articles I know I can rely on, and a quiet place to study and prepare for my examinations. The library also taught me how to do research and do factchecking, instilling in my psyché that not all things found in the internet are true. Hence, you have to verify and make sure that your sources are reliable before believing it. But most importantly, it helped me prepare for my future task as someone who will be entrusted with the lives of my patients.

Despite all the negativities brought by the pandemic, a glimmer of hope I can appreciate is how the library continues to bridge the gap by providing its services to those who seek them.

Like a living organism, the library adapts to the current situation. With the advent of distance learning happening online, the library has morphed beyond its four walls, allowing itself to be reachable within our fingertips. With this I can truly say that CEU Library continues to help Escolarians pursue our respective academic endeavors despite continued health restrictions in Manila as we prepare to take on the future – all thanks to our dedicated librarians, guardians to this portal!

Indeed, CEU Library’s slogan encapsulates its role in the lives of every Escolarian by Creating opportunities, Engaging minds, and Upgrading literacy. The library is a tool we can use as we continue our pursuit to truth and nation-building. But like all tools, its usefulness depends on its user. As Takeda Shingen said, “Knowledge is not power; it is only potential. Applying that knowledge is power. Understanding why and when to apply that knowledge is wisdom.” Therefore, let us be responsible Escolarians and keep ourselves upto-date as we navigate through life with Ciencia y Virtud at heart, serving as catalysts for positive change in our Filipino society towards healing, progress, and peace.

Dr. Olivia M. Limuaco, the former dean of the School of Pharmacy for 23 years, and currently CEU Makati vice president, received the highest award, the Lourdes Talag-Echauz Escolarian Centennial Legacy Award in Pharmacy Practice, for illustrious

The night concluded with a celebratory toast and a culminating message by Mr. Oscar Ocampo, Jr., President of CEU AFI Pharmacy Chapter. This event was a great way to reconnect with alumni and recognize the outstanding contributions that alumni make all around the world as Escolarian Pharmacists.

Hiraya “The fruits of one’s dreams”

I

n January 2022, I conquered the first high mountain to my Escolarian graduate study, my first Lecture Recital entitled “Creating and Performing Choral Works to Develop Audiation Vocabulary in the Tertiary Level”. Last 22 of June 2022, around 10:30 am, another mountain was conquered. I am delighted that my defense presentation became successful after the panelists/jury.

Writing two different papers in two consecutive semesters is not a walk-in-the-park situation. Like hiking on a high mountain, you must deal with various challenges, emotions, and environments. One of the notable challenges I faced during this journey was the pandemic.

However, I did not allow the presence of this global crisis to destroy and let go of my dreams.

With God’s grace and promises, the hazy clouds gradually get clearer. On this journey, I brought

my dreams for myself and my loved ones. These became my hope to keep me motivated to move forward and accomplish God’s purpose in my life.

There are so many lessons and skills I learned on this journey. Let me share one of those lessons that stand out for me: Self-actualization. Learning to know, accept, believe, and trust oneself and capabilities became one of my strategies to conquer the challenges under my shoulders. We must acknowledge, prepare, and conquer first ourselves to conquer whatever challenges await.

KAMPÁNIMULÁ: A Lecture Recital

A

creative study on the Philippine handbell ensemble entitled KAMPÁNIMULÁ: A Contextualized Collection of New Handbell Literature was successfully written and presented last June 22, 2022, by Ian Gabriel T. Corpuz for his graduate studies.

His adviser, Prof. Joed Balsamo, proposed this creative idea to Mr. Corpuz as the topic for his 2nd Lecture-Recital. Prof. Joed Balsamo is a sought-after composer and musical director in the Philippines.

Mr. Corpuz, is a proud product of the CEU Conservatory of Music and an internationally acclaimed composer. With his remarkable victory in the 2017 Busan international Choral Composition Competition, he reaped the Ani ng Dangal award, a recognition from the office of the President of the Republic of the Philippines.

Here are the purpose and objectives of the proposed study.

1. Create classified musical compositions that will promote and feature Philippine folk songs through handbell performance; 2. Encourage schools in the Philippines to consider handbell performance in the music curriculum and cultural performances; 3. Provide an opportunity to expand the handbell literature and explore handbell performance in the Philippines; and 4. Showcase the CPU Handbell Ringers in the performance of my new compositions and

for performing my Handbell works, and my gorgeous music composition teacher, Sir Joed Balsamo, for gracing himself in transforming me to become a better musician notably, as a person. Likewise, to my family and loved ones, “Sos” for showing love and support immensely.

And above all, to our Almighty, I take no control of my future. Hence, I entrust them to you, so let Thy will be done.

The word KAMPÁNIMULÁ combines two Filipino words: Kamapana (bell) and panimula (the beginning) since the creative study is known to be the first local creative study to feature the Philippine Handbells literature.

Among the various musical ensembles exist across the country, Handbell is one of the rare ensembles.

In the Philippines, there are two prominent school-based handbell groups, namely, Hope Christian High School in Tondo, Manila (a FilipinoChinese school) that was established in 1964 and the Central Philippine University Handbell Ringers (CPU-HR) in Iloilo City, founded by Elizabeth Taylor an American missionary in 1970. They are currently the leading handbell ensembles in the country that actively practice the art of Handbell performance. They both have acquired a 5-Octave set handbell instrument, the standard size for a handbell ensemble.

According to Mr. Corpuz’s resources, there are no existing local research studies and local arrangements and compositions for handbells.

Most Handbell works available in the Philippines are Western and American music performances. With this, he was determined to create approximately 60 new handbell works in a momentary time with various genres that will feature Filipino folk songs, original handbell compositions, and traditional Christmas carol hymns.

Corpuz believes that, as a music educator, it is high time to take the first step in accomplishing this creative study in search of other possibilities that could expand the teaching and learning materials for music which will certainly enrich our cultural arts to benefit the younger generation.

JORDAN NEWSCASTING JOURNEY

FROM CEU Balitang Centro News Anchor to IBC Tutok 13 Reporter/Newscaster

R

ight after my On the Job Training as a news writer, reporter, graphic designer and content contributor in IBC News Department, I was hired right away as an official news writer and reporter of the IBC TV 13 station under the IBC Tutok 13 news segment.

A week after, I was then offered to join the audition for the “Search for the Female Newscaster of IBC TV 13”.

It was a seamless transition but I can say that every single day is another step higher of having more social responsibility, accountability and being more credible on what my outputs, words and actions are.

As a graduating student of Communication and Media Arts, as a student who is already creating news content under the News and Current Affairs Organization – Balitang Centro throughout my college days, and as a person who has been working under the same company for my On the Job Training, it was like an easy job for me when I got finally hired. Though I still can’t feel or imagine that I am already working as a professional journalist because since the day that I was hired, I still manage to improve every day, still manage to work hard and be credible as I make my own contents with my own decision, understanding, and accountability guided by my own sense of direction.

Before the IBC Newscaster audition, I prepared my mind, my physical body, my ability to be more conversational while talking and remembered other key notes that my mentor shared to me as the news anchor of Balitang Centro. That time, I was not feeling any pressure because I only thought of having another round of audition just in a different kind of studio. I was not overthinking that the company I was auditioning into is running their news segment on national television because it would just bother me more and would distract my concentration towards my goal of giving my best and learn something from the audition day.

Days after, good news arrived. It was announced that I was one of the shortlisted newscasters and would be having a chance to sit as a newscaster for a week. I really could not believe everything that was happening since day one because I just finished my training, just got hired, just started to live alone in Quezon City and then had the opportunity to be a newscaster on national television. Everything was so fast and unbelievable. As a graduating student, my only goal is to improve myself every single day, to continuously learn before stepping on higher levels of challenges as a

media professional. As I work hard and exert all efforts of giving my best, things just start to fall into the right place fast. You’ll never really know when you are ready for your next battle, you just have to be prepared and love to be in action.

During my newscasting days, I was clueless but the news department team and production team especially the director gave me advices and tips on how to have proper composure in front of the camera and the teleprompter. My first day was a blockbuster since it was the first time that they would have a new newscaster on cam. As days went by, I learned more things and had more friends who helped me before, during and after newscast.

I am thankful the most on how our program head and adviser, Mr. Ricky Rosales, raised us as future media professionals. I am truly proud and beyond words on how he prepared our mindset, our perspective to the reality of the challenges that we have to undergo. For me, we are more than blessed as students having him as our professor, our mentor and a father of the whole communication and media program.

We are his first batch under the new curriculum and I can say that the program has given us wider opportunities, flexible capability and more competitive construction of mind. We grew up and learned not to settle for less but to strive more, learn more and achieve more while battling the challenges and facing the reality of the society, especially in these trying times where social media is rampantly being used in many different ways. In a huge innovative platform, the current and future media professionals should be well-trained to properly inform, educate and entertain people. We are fully equipped and educated by the best practitioners and at the same time, educators in the Communication and Media program of Centro Escolar University-School of Education, Liberal Arts, Music and Social Work.

Balitang Centro helped me and contributed a lot to what I do today with IBC TV 13. The on the ground experiences with the real-life situations, happenings, events, and the standards that we have in Balitang Centro headed by Mr. Ricky Rosales with our student Executive Producer Katherine Denise Sy, are part of the pillars of where I am right now. It is the root of my beginnings and my achievements and I will be forever proud to raise the pride of Balitang Centro Organization. I take pride of my beloved Alma Mater, Centro Escolar University, for providing the students quality education, developing competitive mindsets, and helping them to love their profession leading towards the right direction and decisions in life.

Adviser of CEU Inclusion Program receives Autism Advocate Award

entro Escolar University Inclusion Program adviser Ms. Romina Bautista received the Autism Advocate Award by the Philippine Association for Citizens with Developmental and Learning Disability (PACDLD) in celebration of the World Autism Awareness Day at the Gateway Gallery, Araneta City in Quezon City.

This annual event honors Filipinos who made significant contributions to the betterment of people with autism and those who have made great efforts on spreading autism awareness.

Ms. Romina Bautista was the one who

proposed the Inclusion Program at CEU to offer learning opportunities for students with disability/disabilities in a regular education classroom. She was guided by Dr. Teresita Carey, former School of Education, Liberal Arts, Music and Social Work (SELAMS) dean, and under the consultation of Dr. Maria Rita Lucas, present SELAMS dean, and Ms. Nancy Pascual, former SELAMS faculty.

For more than 25 years, the CEU Inclusion Program has continued to serve learners with special needs taking up non-degree and degree programs in college. CEU also offers Bachelor of Special Needs Education with an option for

additional specialization in Early Childhood Education for aspiring Special Education (SPED) teachers.

entro Escolar University Graduate School alumna, Ms. Roxanne Racquel Cajigas is one of the seven recipients of the Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino (LINKAPIL) Award which is one of the category awards in the 2021 Presidential Awards for Filipino

Individuals and Organizations Overseas (PAFIOO) that recognizes outstanding overseas Filipinos and foreign-based organizations.

The LINKAPIL Award “is conferred on overseas Filipino individuals and organizations for exceptional or significant contributions to the reconstruction, progress, and development of the Philippines.”

The distinction granted to Ms. Cajigas marks her noteworthy service as the Philippine Consulate General in New York in the USA. For this, CEU Graduate School where she obtained her Doctor

of Philosophy in Science Education is truly proud of her accomplishment. She used to be one of the faculty members in CEU. President Rodrigo Duterte will be presenting the awards to the winners during the awarding ceremonies on June 29, 2022 at Manila Marriott Hotel in Pasay City.

The 117 nominees from 31 countries and endorsed by 39 Philippine Foreign Service Posts across Asia, North and South America, Europe, and Australia were thoroughly screened through a four-stage evaluation process.

CEU partners with Bukas.ph for affordable tuition fee plans

n time for the enrollment period, Centro Escolar University in partnership with Bukas.ph held a webinar titled “#AngBukasMoSiguradoto sa CEU” to introduce the Bukas Tuition Installment Plans for the students.

“At Bukas, our goal is to provide every Filipino access to quality education through affordable tuition payment options. With Bukas, students can be the best that they can be, for a better tomorrow,” Ms. Ana Cua, Bukas Partnerships Manager said in her presentation.

CEU students can now avail of the Bukas Tuition Installment which offers up to 100% tuition coverage payable in 12 monthly installments with a low interest rate of 1.5% per month and 3% one-time service fee.

Interested applicants must be at least 18 years old, enrolled at the CEU Manila, Makati or Malolos campus, and must submit a copy of the student ID or any government ID together with the enrollment form. Also, it is required to have a guardian who is at least 21 years old. The online application can be done in as fast as three to five days. Visit Bukas.ph or download the android application to register, create a profile and submit the completed application form. Once approved, just review the contract and click the confirm button. After it is confirmed, Bukas will disburse the payment directly to CEU. Payment can be through online bank apps and non-banks.

Also, the first payment is still a month after the approval.

The University considers this partnership with Bukas a very good way to assist the students

as well as their parents with their financial burdens which might have been heavier because of the pandemic.

Pharmacy Alumnus Arshie Larga is in 2021 Top 10 TikTok Edu Creators

entro Escolar University School of Pharmacy alumnus Arshie Larga ranked 9th in the 2021 Top 10 TikTok Edu Creators for his informative online content about medicine and healthcare.

Aside from practicing his profession at

their family’s own pharmacy in his hometown Marinduque, Arshie has been creating witty yet educational videos on his TikTok account. It was in 2019 when he started sharing a few videos about his experiences as a community pharmacist. Then later in 2020, he began posting informational videos which are easy to understand. His videos also answer common health concerns, and he also debunks misinformation on medicinal drugs which gained a lot of views. This kind of content is very timely and helpful since the country is in the middle of a health crisis.

In over two years, he already gained 2.6

million followers on TikTok with the username @arshielife. He also shares his videos in his Facebook and official Twitter account with 131.5 thousand followers. He also pursued vlogging and has garnered 20.1 thousand subscribers on Youtube.

Arshie is a truly proud graduate of CEU, as he really mentioned this in his videos. He finished his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy both in CEU. It has been two straight years that Arshie has been included in the Top 10 educational creators for TikTok. In 2020, he claimed the second spot.

ESCOLARIAN PHYSICIANS: An account

of resilience and triumph amidst the CoViD-19 pandemic

E

ach of us has our unique stories to tell about our journey in medical school. But one thing we all share in common is the fact that we journeyed together. As in all journeys, we experienced occasional bumps and hurdles along the way. Different timelines offer unique challenges with the goal of bringing out the best version in all of us as future doctors responding to the signs of the times.

However, ours is a peculiar one. Aside from the usual pressures we face as medical students, the CoViD-19 pandemic changed everything.

Who would have thought that the typical face-toface classroom learning setup would be replaced by various virtual platforms where we can all meet, learn, and collaborate with the intent of delivering quality education at par with the methods already in place despite the enforced physical distancing?

Who would have thought that would be possible?

Some of us may have and indeed they are visionaries in a sense. Yet, for most of us, necessity made it possible. As the saying goes, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going...” With this in mind, we come to appreciate how far we have travelled in our pursuit of our much-coveted MD. Malayo pa pero malayo na rin ang narating natin. All these were made possible because we never gave up no matter how daunting the muchneeded change was required of us.

And now, narito na tayo sa exciting part! Not just an ordinary graduation day but the first-ever held face-to-face since the pandemic began in 2020. Truly, a historic day not only for CEU School of Medicine “Hiraya” Batch 2022 but also for the

entire Escolarian community!

Join me as we all look back on the journey we had together.

As the Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice. For it is not the same river and he is not the same man...” Such encapsulates two concepts upon which we as graduating students must hold dear in our hearts today, namely: (1) The only constant thing in the world is change and (2) Opportunity only comes once, seize every moment. Just as previously mentioned, we all journeyed together. Our batch mates along with the faculty and staff, the university administrators, our senior interns, hospital residents and consultants, with our respective parents, families, friends, loved ones, and even the patients entrusted to our care were with us throughout the entire learning process.

From the first quarter of 2020, the global pandemic affected everyone. For a moment, life stood still. We were told to observe physical distancing; that by keeping ourselves away from others, we can help break the chain of transmission of the virus and contribute to the collective effort in containing CoViD-19. In so doing, the government implemented strict lockdowns that prevented people from leaving their homes unnecessarily.

Our academic institutions soon followed, limiting learning to be conducted online. Faced with such difficult circumstances, we found ourselves at a crossroad, asking ourselves, “Am I going to continue further studies in Medicine given these

uncertainties or not?” This is where we applied the first concept.

As one learning community, we all needed to change and adapt to the situation. For all of us who continued our academic endeavors, we found out that online learning has its own pros and cons. With more time learning at our own pace, we were able to multitask. I bet most, if not all, found ways to make both ends meet just to get it through the pandemic. Problems concerning internet connectivity were enough to cause anxiety and dread in us especially while taking online major examinations or graded virtual recitations. Let us not forget how Typhoon Ulysses (Vamco) caused havoc and added insult to injury to the growing concern of mental health among students during the last quarter of 2020. This was the peak when students from other schools collectively clamored for an academic break from their various educational institutions. But ours held its ground and instead rallied us towards academic resilience, a trait the school is famously known for.

Learning continued with the goal of “nobody gets left behind”. Such change in perspective enabled Escolarians to push on despite the Continued on page 16

CEU-Makati donates to typhoon victims

he Centro Escolar Unversity – Makati community pooled its resources from its members (administrators, faculty, nonteaching staff and students) to share their blessings to donate to the victims of Typhoon “Odette”. The typhoon hit hard parts of Visayas and Mindanao and left thousands of people homeless.

The Community Outreach Section and COMPASS-Makati in coordination with the Student Affairs Office headed by Mrs. Gemma Rosemarie M. Gornez and Dr. Maria Corazon L. Andoy respectively organized the said donation drive in consultation with the VP and Dean of Studies, Dr. Olivia M. Limuaco. Donations in cash and kind were accepted from December 23, 2021 to January 3, 2022 which amounted to PhP 41,091.50.

The Star Apple Foundation based in Bgy. Pasay, Maasin, Southern Leyte was one of the recipients of the drive. The foundation is a registered non-stock non-profit corporation, helping the very poor by providing housing, nutritious food and education.

Part of the drive was coursed through the former dean of School of Health Care Professions from the University of San Carlos in Cebu, Dr.

Yolanda Deliman for distribution to the recipients.

Also, students and staff of CEU-Makati whose families in the Visayas were affected by the typhoon were given financial assistance.

Indeed, the CEU core value of social responsibility was deeply felt during the Christmas season. As Henri Nouwen once said, “Our greatest fulfillment lies in giving ourselves to others”.

SciTech alumni and student council hold community outreach activities

n August 28, 2021, a path to wellness was lit to life as CEU Alumni Foundation, Inc.in collaboration of CEU SciTech Alumni Chapter, CEU Psychology Dept- Manila and CEU SciTech Student Council held Journey to Wellness with the theme “Managing your Mental Health at the Time of Pandemic” via Zoom and Facebook Live.

The event was also graced with the presence of the CEU President, Dr. Padolina as she gave her greetings to the viewers. It was then followed by introduction of the speakers and their respective topics. The resource speakers

were CEU alumni Mrs. Eva Pacayra, On-call Psychologist/Consultant at the City Health Office in Taguig; Mrs. Merlyn Lina, Vice President/CFO, LM Integrated System and Data Networking; and Mrs. Amelita Lagonsin De Jesus, Head, HR Department, Executive Optical, Inc. The event aims to present the importance of mental health, self-awareness, positivity, and tips on how to manage one’s mental wellbeing specially during this time of pandemic.

Council gave light and hope to children and elders of Missionary of Charity in Tondo, Manila as they held IGNITE: Reliving Dreams and Giving Hope Amidst Pandemic with the theme “Be The Beacon: Coming Together and Uniting for a Cause”.

The initiative was headed by Dr. Marietta Subida as overall alumni chairperson; Raymond Fortaleza, overall student chairperson; Dr. Paz Lucido, president of CEU-AFI; Dr. Julieta Dungca, Dean of School of Science and Technology; and Ms. Eden Joy P. Alata, SciTech Council Adviser.

The success was even possible with the help of all the volunteers and persons who supported and contributed for the event.

OUR CEU STARS EXPERIENCE PJ Sheed D. Olea

T

he Scheme to Reward Relevant Suggestions, or CEU STARS, is a platform where students, visitors, parents, alumni, faculty members, and employees are encouraged to put forward creative ideas that will enhance the operations of the University. When the University first announced about CEU STARS in their Facebook page, I immediately asked my good friend, Ms. Sophia Bandiola, to join. We based our recommendations from the point of view of the students and essentially enumerated what we would have wanted to experience given the chance.

Our entry was our suggestions on the Improvement of the University’s Information Technology (I.T.) Environment. First, we suggested the streamlining of the Student Portal because currently, there are three (3) websites students go to - each with different and limited purposes. We recommend the streamlining of these portals into one in order to serve as a onestop-shop for all the students’ needs. Second, we also suggested the implementation of Online Service Ticketing System which is a customer service tool that aims to manage company’s processes and customer cases. Several online applications have implemented this kind of system already and we thought that it is high time for institutional servers to apply the same.

This way, concerned students or parents may raise a concern online and easily track them as the system generates a number or coded ticket for each request. Currently, almost all the University’s processes are attended virtually through emails which can be lost very easily. With this kind of system, there will be better management of concerns leading to quicker resolution times. On the other hand, students would be benefitted in the sense that they also want to track how their concerns are being treated at the moment. Lastly, we also suggested for downloadable brochures via the official CEU Website, live chat for enrollment consultations, and payment of school fees via Gcash’ Pay Bills function for faster transactions.

With the speed of technological advancements, we believe that the University shall improve their IT infrastructure for a more effective and efficient delivery of their services.

After few weeks, when Dr. Maria Corazon Andoy, the CEU STARS committee chairperson, messaged us that we were one of the three finalists, we were ecstatic. We did not expect it because there were around fifteen (15) participants who submitted, and most were employees and faculties. We were excited and grateful because being one of the finalists is an honor already.

On November 20, 2021, the awarding ceremony of Centro Escolar University’s 19th Quality Awards was virtually held via Zoom Applications and livestreamed through the University’s official Facebook page. We were both nervous and excited. Sophia and I were communicating then that no matter what the results would be, it was already a great honor, privilege, and experience becoming a finalist. Then, when the hosts announced the winners, we were brimming with joy. Our eyes actually teared up a little when they announced our names. God-willing, we won the Best CEU STARS Entrant Award. We were then flashed live on the screens and despite our face masks on, we could not hide our happiness. It was such a memorable moment in our college lives especially when we were informed that it was the first time that students won the said award.

In the end, we were grateful for the University and the committees for giving us such award. It is good that the University exerts efforts in gathering feedbacks and suggestions from its stakeholders, and it feels greater to be heard. Sophia and I are hoping that our suggestions may soon be implemented and, we also encourage our fellow Escolarians to make use of such platforms. It is important that we see our problems as opportunities for improvements, and act accordingly.

Online tasks did not only test our personal capabilities but our group dynamics as well. Tempers flared and even misunderstanding led to quarrels. Such is part of the learning process. With it, we were able to know and understand each other in our respective blocks and thus, help us in our personal growth as individuals as we prepare for the actual thing in the hospitals and for life in general.

Some of us were given the much-needed help just in time in order to continue our studies, a lifeline if you may. This is where we applied the second concept. Such seized opportunities enabled us to achieve more despite all the negativities around us. Looking back during the first quarter of 2022, the threat of a looming new CoViD-19 surge was poised to jeopardize our actual in-person clinical rotations. Our original plans were held back for a month in order to comply with the Inter-Agency Task Force’s policy of preventing any form of face-to-face classes/

duties from being implemented in the National Capital Region. On the other hand, our trust in the efficacy of our vaccines, and with evidence-based, science-centered decision-making, our faculty and university administrators were enabled to grant us the green light and be blessed enough to be allowed for the first time ever since the pandemic began to rotate in our base hospital, Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center in Marikina City.

As Clinical Clerks, we were exposed to the realities that no online class can ever replace.

Experience is indeed the best teacher! By becoming part of the medical team, we were able to correlate what we learned online with the actual cases our patients presented with in the hospital essentially allowing us to develop our clinical eye and honing further our critical thinking, as well as practicing the skills required of us. Furthermore, this infuses our future practice with a compassionate spirit geared towards the welfare of our patients in the service of the Filipino people. By maintaining our eyes on the

prize, with the help and inspiration from people who believed that we can, the encouragement from each other, and God’s unending grace, we were able to rise up and conquer every obstacle, leading us to this very day.

Alas! Let me end with Jose Rizal’s famous words, “Ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan...” As we become graduates, with grateful hearts let us remember where we all came from. Let us be the change we so long seek in our respective institutions. The cycle of injustice and toxic culture ends with us. Let us be part of the solution. The change starts with YOU. Seize every moment!

With all these, let me ask you: How far have we come in developing ourselves guided by the University’s motto, Ciencia y Virtud, and incorporating the concept of the Five-Star Physician, as we prepare to become Escolarian doctors? No matter what your response is, let me remind you that even baby steps is progress as well. Rest if you must but never quit, fellow Escolarian! Congratulations! We made it!

THE BIKE INCIDENT:

First Aid Experience

n the 11th of October, 2021, 6:20 PM. An accident took place in front of the Librada Avelino Hall gate of the Centro Escolar University - Manila Campus. A cyclist was riding his bike along the streets of Mendiola when a stray cat ran towards his path. Given the fact that the rider evaded that cat, it led him into losing his balance resulting in him crashing into the center aisle pavement of Mendiola. A commotion started to form around the area which could put the patient at risk of losing consciousness from lack of oxygen supply and the guy who found him didn’t know anything about first aid.

I decided to intervene since I had knowledge about first aid from my specialization, Health Services and Caregiving from the Centro Escolar Integrated School - Manila and knowledge about possible nursing interventions from my chosen course, Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Centro

Escolar University - Manila. I checked the following signs: • Consciousness - The cyclist is awake and doing his best to stay awake.

• Breathing - The cyclist’s breathing is a bit labored due to shock.

• Pulse - Tachycardia is present because of shock from the incident.

• Response – The cyclist has difficulty responding to questions at first because he verbalizes that he is really dizzy and he repeats saying the following statements: “Nasan ako?”

“Kanina pa ako sumemplang?”

“Madami ba yung dugo?”

“May babayaran ba ako pag dinala sa …”

“May tumawid kasi na pusa tapos iniwasan ko tapos gumewang ako bigla.”

As the first aid provider, I needed access to the station’s medical kit. Surprisingly, the police officers that I asked told me that there were no first aid kits available and none of the police officers offered help due to the fact that they were baffled about what they were going to do. So instead of stressing myself out, I kindly asked the officers to call an ambulance and asked if they could send one as soon as possible. This I believe is a protocol for a road accident. I resorted to asking the joggers and bystanders for help and was lucky enough to receive two towels which I used to put pressure on his head without compromising the possibility of infection on his open wound.

I talked to him continuously and asked him where he lived, if he had any relatives that we could contact, and if there was anyone riding with him. He gave me his phone and typed in the password and I immediately called the cellphone of his mom. After few tries, his mother answered the phone and I was able to calmly tell her about the accident that took place that his son was involved in. At this moment, the ambulance that was requested a while ago arrived with the EMT. The Emergency Response Team asked me for a statement and I was able to give them the information that they needed. The mother of the cyclist arrived with his brother where they thanked me for taking care of their son/brother. I said that it was my pleasure to do so, and informed them that the police’s response was a bit slow because they didn’t have anything to work with the situation.

The cyclist was taken to the hospital and was scheduled for a CT scan and a Tetanus shot as I was told by the EMT. After being dismissed by the EMT, I was asked by the police to give a statement about the incident where I gave them my time and was able to finish it off quickly.

I was asked by the EMT to pull down my mask for a while because they couldn’t understand what I was saying when I was giving them the statement.

Eye Love Vision: School of Optometry Celebrates World Sight Day 2021

s part of the school’s mission to educate its students on the awareness and proper care of eye health, the School of Optometry took part in the celebration of World Sight Day 2021 with activities in store for all through Facebook Live at 9:30 a.m. on October 16, 2021 with the theme, “Love Your Eyes: Good Eye Care Practices”.

The resource speaker, Dr. Gerald Licera, spoke about the importance of awareness to one’s own eye health as well as the practices that one should do as a future Optometrist. Medical Technology Escolarian is awardee of the 2022 American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) 40 Under 40

aolo Miguel Ata, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology in 2011, is one of the honorees in the prestigious 2022 Forty under Forty ASCP program of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as it recognizes the brightest emerging leaders and innovators in the field of laboratory medicine.

In this annual program, forty pathologists, pathology residents and laboratory professionals under the age of 40 are honored for professional excellence. In this year’s ASCP’s Centennial Celebration and 2022 ASCP Annual Meeting, Mr. Ata was given recognition for his leadership that make an impact in the field of laboratory medicine.

At present, Mr. Ata is the Laboratory Quality coordinator at Community Medical Center in Toms River, as well as an adjunct professor for the Medical Laboratory Technologist program at Mercer County Community College, both in New Jersey, United States of America. He was introduced to the laboratory profession while serving as a medical laboratory specialist in the US Army. He completed his MBA in Healthcare Management at Western Governors University, USA. He also holds an Associate degree in Science from George Washington University, and a certificate in Health Science Clinical Laboratory Technology.

This achievement of Mr. Ata did not surprise his teachers because during his college days he already manifested leadership skills and excellent academic performance.

“I am proud to have been a student of CEU’s School of Medical Technology. I would like you to know that the education I’ve obtained from the program very much helped me as a laboratory professional. Keep up the production of great laboratory professionals!”

This is the testimony of Mr. Ata. He has high praises for the university and the School of Medical Technology’s faculty members.

Mr. Ata is a true blooded Escolarian who embodies the CEU’s twin philosophy Ciencia y Virtud.

Mr. Ata’s current role in the laboratory gives him the opportunity to improve best practices, update policies and procedures to current accreditation standards, be involved in method performance verifications, and monitor quality indicators for process improvement.

Beyond the Screens

T

he day we were applying for Kansai University’s J-MCP 21st Century Skills Program, I didn’t really know what to expect. Being the president of the Optometry Student Council, my main objective was solely to represent our school; but I guess there is a reason why experience has always been rendered as the best teacher. When the results came out that I was one of the five Escolarian delegates to attend the project, I felt ecstatic mostly because we would be meeting fellow students from different countries.

The program ran through from February 7 to March 27, 2022. It has become an integral part of my weekly routine to attend our classes on Mondays and Thursdays. The topics circulated around teamwork, collaboration, creativity, presentation skills, well-being, and critical thinking skills. There were around 50 people enrolled in our group and each virtual session would always include an interactive breakout room activity.

From the more than a month-long program, I have learned the importance of becoming your own leader. Self-leadership allows you to drive yourself towards your goals. During the program, we had to work on a final project. One of my group mates is from another country and has difficulty speaking in English. It was a whole other experience making sure our ideas were well-communicated. We were able to work through the language barriers and produced one of the most loved presentations during our last day.

One of the many things I have gained from UMAP COIL was the importance of compassion. It was so easy for me to feel frustrated over how hard it was to talk to my teammates but I decided to stay calm and composed. I have learned to reflect and understand where they are coming from. We are from different nations, different time zones, and from different walks of life. Through them I have heard narratives that were coming from an opposite point of view to what I was used to. It was interesting to listen to the stories and to the trains of thought of my classmates.

During the final project, our team went with my idea to focus on the question, “What if history got erased?” I have come up with this topic because during the UMAP COIL, a lot of historical revisionism was being encouraged by the social media algorithm in our country. It was a big question that required a lot of compartmentalizing. During those last few weeks of the program, we really had to think deeply about our “what if.”

Nonetheless, I had no regrets for choosing a challenging topic to present.

Here, I have learned how critical thinking, creativity, and well-thought of presentations can be powerful tools in the 21st century.

I am blessed to have a platform where I can openly share and

integrate what I have learned from Kansai University. When I got back from the program, we hosted a virtual E-Kumustahan for our roughly 800 Optometry students. Here, I have utilized what I have gained on teamwork, collaboration, creativity, presentation, well-being, and critical thinking. I have initiated activities in the E-Kumustahan that would stimulate synergy.

I have opened conversations with my colleagues on how they are doing and how we can be of assistance.

Through my experience, I was able to be of help in building a space for students where they can raise their concerns. However, the E-Kumustahan is just one of the many ways I have implemented my insights from the program. In my day-to-day life as an Escolarian, I get to practice compassion and excellence. In UMAP, we have learned the story of the geese. When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates to the back of the formation and allows another goose to take charge. This, for me, is how I make the most impact on our community. We have the opportunity to empower others with our activities and with what we say.

I believe we rise by lifting others. Leadership, after all, is not elevation to power but submission to duty. What I have learned from the 21st Century Skills Program are things I could bring with me throughout the years but what gives true strength to these learnings are the ways I can potentially incorporate them to my circle of influence.

Here’s a piece of advice to my fellow Escolarians. Think global but act local. Events like Kansai University’s 21st Century Skills Program is an amazing way to gain knowledge but let us not forget to return home and use what we have learned to serve the people. Take the leap of faith and apply to opportunities that knock on your door. Whatever reason you may have for joining activities, let us be grateful for the privilege we have and let us maximize this privilege by aiming to make positive changes in our society.

The Calligraphy Digital Art Category winners were Ron Aldrich Golingo and Therese Faith Peregrino who tied for third place, Melody De Luna was second place, and Raena Marjorie Alvarez won first place. The Traditional Art Category winners were Jacob Orillo in third place,

Kohleen Sianson in second place, and Sophia Louise Lacorte was the grand winner.

The winners of the “Eye Can Sing” singing contest were Loida Eunic Remo in third place, Jessica Gagui in second place, and Danela Louise Guilab in first place. The program ended with the closing remarks by Dr. Ma. Cecilia L. Yu, Adviser of

COMPASS Optometry Chapter.

The greater goal of this event is not only to raise awareness about proper eye health and care, but also to express gratitude for the gift of sight to those who are fortunate. Not everyone is born with the ability to see, so as sighted people, we must learn to value the gift of sight we have, and through the proper education and knowledge we gain not only from this celebration, but in everything we do, we can hope to provide a better future for the eye health and care industry.

Road to 21st Century Skills of Excellence

he memory is vivid as well as the emotions that keep on twirling inside me. It’s as if a tornado filled with inspiration, dedication, drive to learn as well as the perseverance to carry change not just in a community but in the whole world was unleashed.

There are adjustments in everything new, but there is also the excitement that keeps us going. Truly, in the programs that the Kansai University, Institute for Innovative Global Education (IIGE) holds, learning is inevitable and I have gained details on some of the salient points to become a catalyst of change in the 21st Century especially specific skills like critical thinking, presentation skills, teamwork and collaboration. But there is more to that, and here’s my roller coaster ride during the Kansai University-IIGE 21st Century Skills JMCP Program last February to March 2022.

I was on cloud 9 when the news reached me. I am a person who expects less and always waits for great things to happen and there comes a congratulatory email from SVP Teresa R. Perez. It was indeed something that I did not expect. Different emotions filled me but the most prominent one is doubt, a lot of “what ifs” and the overlapping question of “can I really do it?”.

I was in the province and internet connection was not stable. I was also new in immersing myself in an international event that included intercultural classes and I was as well having a lot of responsibilities as a student, a daughter and a leader. But the dreaded date came without me figuring out what to do. It wasn’t a really good experience because I was not able to attend virtually, kept on leaving the meeting and I did not manage to introduce myself. There, I realized, some

paths are not just rough but also a dead end to those who doubt and wait. So that was when I decided to take action, and took off to Manila. I left the day before the next meeting and the feelings of finally participating, engaging and being with them was so overwhelming but protruding with joy and excitement.

The whole journey composed of virtual and asynchronous classes was indeed a roller coaster. Having meetings in the council, doing internships and attending the 21st century class was also overwhelming my mental health. I needed to juggle amongst these things but they did not fetter me but instead challenged me to become better. I am also happy with all the learning I am supposed to bring home. And what made me even happier is the moments with my classmates from other countries with different cultures. All the laughs, the knowledge and things we’ve shared are incomparable amongst everything.

And this journey is nothing without the souvenirs I took from the path. Now that I am back, I will never take any other path the same again. And I now have the drive to take paths across horizons and reach hands no matter what the race, the color and the culture we have.

Achieving goals and dreams is indeed fulfilling. But it takes time and there’s always a process we all should take. There’s always a tough road and paths where we need to choose. The only thing that you must remember and carry is your drive to be part of something significant. Always be open to learning and choose the things that will only help you reach your goals.

But the most important thing is, start your journey. Step out and never be afraid of claiming what is already yours, you just have to grab it.

Nurses’ Days

he School of Nursing celebrated Nurses’ Days on March 12 and 26, 2022 with the theme, “CEUSchool of Nursing gearing towards Nursing Excellence” which highlighted the importance of knowledge expansion and unity in the Nursing field. It was a joyous occasion filled with talks about the experiences of School of Nursing alumni as well as the latest trends in Nursing.

Nurses’ Day 1 started with an Opening Ceremonies, with the 8th Dean Ida G. Kimseng Memorial Lecture as the main event, and was celebrated with a Thanksgiving Mass. Dean Elvira L. Urgel’s opening remarks reminded the student body about the critical role that nurses have wherever they go.

With an emphasis on compassion, nurses have the ability to heal.

Mikee B. Torres, the 10th place in the Nursing Licensure Examination 2021, highlighted Dean Ida G. Kimseng’s accomplishments and efforts as the founding dean of the School of Nursing. She shared her experiences as a student nurse and gave key points on what CEU School of Nursing has taught her. She explained how she reviewed for the Licensure Examination and provided tips to those who will be taking it soon.

Mrs. Mylene R. Estrella-SinoCruz, Nurse V from Caloocan City Health Department and Class 1994 alumna talked about the prospects and opportunities in the community setting while moving forward with COVID-19. She shared snippets of what it was like to work in a community setting prior and during the pandemic. She explained that COVID-19 displaced or harmed a number of community health programs, including school-based immunizations. She concluded her speech by emphasizing the importance of getting vaccinated and the efforts being made to ensure everyone’s safety.

Nurses’ Day 2 was the E-Kumustahan, social interaction and Voter’s Education. A variety of speakers were invited to tie the whole event together. Mr. Arce V. Amparo, MAN, RN is the director of Nursing-Workforce, Hazm-Mebaireek General Hospital in Doha Qatar. He shared his experiences as an Escolarian student and the steps that he took to be where is now. His story inspired the student body proving that there are many paths that a graduate from the School of Nursing can take.

Ms. Fatima Louise Aluquin, from St. Luke’s Medical Center gave a talk on stress management. Mr. Darryl C. Correa, MA. LPT. RPm, a voter’s education advocate from First Services, spoke on the importance of making

an informed choice. Mr. Anthony Robles BS Ed., LPT led a team-building activity emphasizing the importance of growing and improving our own capabilities as well as recognizing our own weaknesses in order to improve teamwork.

The Pintig ng EscolariaNars was a moment for the students to answer a poll regarding who their President and Vice President were for the national elections. Meaningful intermission numbers were rendered. A spoken poetry video of the Nursing Student Council which placed 4th during Sabayang Pagbigkas was played and Level 2 students highlighted the life of nurses in the Philippines through story-telling and music.

The two-days event was meaningful and memorable because it was a collaboration of the past, present and the future of the School of Nursing and its stakeholders.

Below is an excerpt from the spoken poetry written by Elishah Mae Domingo, entitled, Ang Pagmulat sa Riyalidad Mula Sa Hiyaw ng Kabataan.

Pilipinas kong Mahal, Mula sa panunumpa sa Panatang Makabayan Tungkulin ko ay gagampanan, Iaalay ang aking buhay, Hanggaʼt makamit ang hustisya Ng bawat mamayanan sa mahal kong Pilipinas!

Kulay mo man ay rosas, pula, berde, asul at iba pa Tayo ang boses ng bawat isa, Piliting imulat ang bawat mata, Sa katotohanang tayoʼy lugmok na.

Ngayong parating na halalan, Huwag papasilaw sa salapi na para sa bayan.

Iboto ang tapat at may paninindigan.

Hindi dahil sa “sabi” ng karamihan.

Alamin ang totoo sa “fake news”.

Ipagkumpara gamit ang “credible source”.

Mag check ng “facts” gamit ang libro, Upang ang iyong alam ay hindi lang puro “opinyon” Buksan natin ang ating mga mata!

Maging matatag ang bawat isa Nawaʼy maitama ang pagkukulang, Dahil ang tagumpay ng bukas, atin ring matatamasa!

Ang sabiʼy kabataan ang pag asa ng bayan Ngunit sa ating kapanahunan, tayoʼy hindi mapakinggan.

Tila boses ay ‘di mapagbigyan Dahil bata at kulang sa kasanayan.

Dugoʼt pawis man ang harapin, Ngayong eleksyon tayo ay susubukin.

Ako, ikaw, tayo pa rin!

Ang tinutukoy ni Rizal.

I Am Who I Am Meant To Be

Born and raised in Macau, the city of casinos.

Be ready to place your bets.

As people do when figuring out what I am.

A half-blood born Chinese-Filipino, My looks can deceive you.

I sat in a classroom of my two identities.

When my Chinese teachers asked me to speak for necessities.

The only thing that came out was five words of deficiencies.

“Sorry, I can’t speak Chinese.”

My classmates laughed at me, Characters were thrown at me, They think I couldn’t comprehend.

But the words I tried to fend “Maid!”

“Monkey!”

“Dirty!”

“Clean!”

My cheeks went as red as the “hong baos” (red packets) they redeem, The beast inside me from the Lunar New Year story, wants to scream.

I looked to the right where a Filipina sat, Her eyes were down on her Chinese book, not wanting to stand.

This distanced me from my plum blossom roots, My paternal figure, his clashing accent slides.

“Don’t let them destroy you” he opened my blinds.

As I saw him in an argument against his kind, Protecting my mother’s beautiful sunshine.

I emerged from my Macau roots, a lotus flower has bloomed.

I fought with no regrets, I stood in the shine And showed what my other half can do with divine.

Divine from the hot golden rays, my mother glowed with fire.

Fire, her words echoed through my mind as she taught me what it is to fight.

Fight, with resilience as a Filipino spirit runs through my veins As I bloomed into a new classroom with a comfortable ton.

A ton of questions were asked and took interest in the foreigner’s stun.

But as I grew older, my femininity transpired.

All I was, all I am defined is, “Mataray” “Maganda” “Maldita” “Cute” And “screwable”.

All because of the eyes I have.

I was used to being in their fantasies.

The lotus bloom has withered with its memories.

My language of two wants to scream.

Like the fire crackers and drums as the lions leaped.

Like my mother on the road against the big bad man.

Like the siren’s coming, alerting my father’s karma.

Like the loud oil splashes of my mother’s crispy pata.

My bottled anger folds, mixed in the plate that I hold.

A side of adobo with sweet and sour chicken And rice that energizes the roots of my ambitions.

But the bitterness of the ampalaya stains the roof of my mouth Compared the extravagance of shark fin soup I no longer consume I merged my blood into one.

Like the Macau taxis tied sampaguita for a breath of fresh air.

Like the intricate details of what the clothing is like.

Like the richness of culture that binds in life.

The beauty of both my parents gave.

Friends that appreciate and allow me to define– How I want to be, and my future’s line I am the stem of a lotus, growing from the mud.

To reach before the morning sun.

I am not a word, I am not ordinary.

And definitely not a property of your fantasy.

From my roots to my head.

From the color of my skin to the language that I speak.

I am Chinese.

I am Filipino.

I am who I am meant to be.

Christ, in times of cries

Unending devotion is what we give upon our faith, We’ll take turns to spread love and thank his acts to the human race.

In this world, our heart is scarred but his light shines from afar.

Let us hear his voice once more, through the days we so abhor.

Broken branches and scattered bricks, Lifted from trees and simple houses.

Cold breeze of wind and its simple tricks, Shifted our gaze in multiple losses.

The world suffers, but he’s here, Trust and love, need not fear.

Battles and hurdles we cannot see, will soon give us light as it rather be.

Our heart cries, our hope lies, His love pushed us to believe.

In our faith, our God stays, Through him, we made what we achieved.

Despite being broken and scarred lifelong, We will stand for our country with God all along.

For who is at fault don’t end behind bars, But we, through his grace, can rebuild what is ours.

ABOVE THE LINE

Life is like a race where your only competitor is yourself.

You strive to become better than who you were yesterday, No matter how great or small those improvements are.

Life may seem like a race - with different hurdles set along your track.

Each with different heights where one may be higher than the others.

You might even feel like running atop waters.

And you trip, you tumble, you fall forward towards the floor.

But still unbroken, injured perhaps, but still unbroken.

Life maybe is a race.

Only that it is one not meant to be won.

You don’t exactly get to “win” at life because it is not a competition.

It is a journey and journeys are meant to be enjoyed.

You are free to run, to walk, to take a stroll or even a pause as long as you are facing and moving forward.

Life can be a race.

But you are the one to set your goal.

People do not get to decide who you should be or what you should have.

You get to design your own course and you get to choose your pace.

You get to pick the seasons you’ll race.

And they may be relays where you have goals one after the other.

And now, we are nearing one of our end goals for this season.

Life is a race, and that sweet white line is now at hand.

But we have not only reached it, because we blossomed and we soared, We have dedicated our hearts, our souls, and our might.

And now, we have risen - above the line.
