Nakuha nito ang First prize, Peoples’ Choice, at Best
“I didn’t know that I would be able to make it to the deadline but I made it! So I guess it’s luck and hard work,” San Jose said in a video interview posted on SM Supermalls Facebook account.
San Jose received a total of Php250,000 as cash prize.
A celebration of creativity
As part of the Women’s Month series of activities of SM Supermalls, the inaugural event of Sining Filipina is a combined celebration of art, empowerment, and creativity among Philippine women artists. It also aims to provide an avenue for all Filipina in the country with extraordinary talents.
Steven Tan, president of SM Supermalls, said that the competition received 732 entries nationwide in two categories, Figurative and Non-
“Layers of Experiences”
San Jose’s winning artwork speaks of “an empowered woman who is made wiser and tougher by various experiences wherein she has learned lessons from.”
She continues to describe a woman by saying that “those imprints help her face the trials she encounters in life. She is not perfect, but does her best every time. Failing, for her, is always an opportunity to learn and become better. She weeps, but does not give up. Instead of drowning into self-pity, she finds ways to overcome and rise above difficulties.”
Her art piece “is made with layers of imprints from the tip of skewers.” It also leaves “a compelling message that woman power equips generations; with what they need in order to build a strong nation.”

The user can also join communities, create projects and participate on events to further his knowledge in MIL. Each month, an empowered community of marginalized youth will be featured to delve into their values, advocacies, and challenges in holding fundraising, exciting events, and many more.
“Our team wants to share the power of having a safe space in the community application. That’s why we introduced MILES. It is a digital platform that advocates filling the gaps of educational system of the youth, and diminishing marginalized youth sectors,” Charlene Grace added.
The Team Agos Philippines has already worked on the Feasibility, Sustainability, and Business Model to sustain the app. They plan to launch MILES in both Apple Store and Google Play by the 3rd quarter of 2024.

On March 11 and 18, 2024, the teaching and non-teaching staff had their recollection with Rev. Fr. John Klenn Malificiar, as the recollection master.
The Way of the Cross was held every Friday at CEU chapel after the noon mass while the annual Way of the Cross on Holy Tuesday was participated by different schools and departments that prepared their own altar for their designated station of the cross.
On March 17, 2024, the Visita Iglesia was joined by staff, collaborators and student volunteers from three campuses. It was held in Bulacan and started with a Holy Sunday mass at CEU Malolos chapel. Seven
churches in Bulacan were visited: Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Malolos; Sta. Isabel Church, Malolos; St. James Church, Plaridel; St. Augustine Church, Baliuag; Parish of San Isidro Labrador, Pulilan; and the National Shrine of Divine Mercy, Marilao, where we did our station of the cross.
On March 20, 2024, the Pabasa 2024 was held in CEU chapel. Pabása is a Catholic devotion in the Philippines popular during Holy Week involving the uninterrupted chanting of the Pasyón, an early 16th-century epic poem narrating the life, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This new Lenten activity in CEU was participated by CEU Singers Manila and some faculty who volunteered in chanting of the Pasyon.
These activities are observed to prepare our hearts for the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus and encourage prayer, almsgiving, fasting, and abstinence. Observing these practices contributes in strengthening the faith of the community.

CEU Cosmetic Science Alumna Invades Europe
by Gelli G. Esguerra
In a world where beauty meets science, success stories often remain hidden behind the shimmering façade of products. As for Centro Escolar University Cosmetic Science alumna Irish Basera, it is her dedication and passion that have taken her talents to the vibrant heart of Europe.
The 30-year-old humble native from Occidental Mindoro did not plan on taking a Cosmetic Science program in college. She initially pursued a Nursing program, but during her sophomore year, she was diagnosed with dengue fever and was confined in the ICU for almost a month. After her recovery, her doctor told her to avoid exposure to risky environments such as hospitals. That’s when she decided to explore other program options.
“I was drawn to Chemistry but wanted to remain at CEU. Fortunately, I discovered that CEU offers a Bachelor of Science in Cosmetic Science. Initially hesitant due to misconceptions about the program focusing solely on makeup application, I was pleasantly surprised when I reviewed the curriculum. The subjects were predominantly science-oriented, sparking genuine enthusiasm within me,” shared Irish.
As she delved into the program, she realized that being a nurse was not her true calling. She started yearning for a career that encompasses dressing up elegantly, engaging in client meetings, delivering presentations, and even embarking on business travels. Shifting to the Cosmetic Science program aligned perfectly with her aspirations.
and accurate health information, he began posting a series of informational videos to answer common health concerns. What sets Arshie apart is his remarkable ability to break down medical concepts into easy-tounderstand, bite-sized pieces of content.
He tackles topics that affect people’s everyday lives, such as managing allergies, understanding over-the-counter medications, and navigating the world of vitamins and supplements. He even gives out free medicines to customers at their family’s own pharmacy in his hometown in Marinduque. His ability to simplify complex healthrelated information has made him a trusted source of knowledge for his followers, who appreciate his guidance in making informed decisions about their well-being.
Beyond simply offering health advice, Arshie has also dedicated himself to combating misinformation about medicinal drugs. His videos often debunk myths and clarify misconceptions surrounding various medications, ensuring that his audience can make informed decisions about their healthcare.
Arshie Larga’s dedication to his profession and his passion for educating others have earned
For Irish, being a graduate of CEU’s Cosmetic Science program provided her a significant edge, particularly when pursuing roles in research and development. The comprehensive curriculum with thoughtfully designed subjects enabled her to develop a profound understanding of cosmetic formulation.
“Even as a fresh graduate and a newcomer at my initial workplace, the knowledge I gained in CEU gave me confidence to engage with complex formulations. This foundation has proven instrumental in my ability to excel in my current professional journey,” said Irish.
In 2018, Irish took part in the exchange student program in Daegu, South Korea, as well as in the international research conference in Thailand which was facilitated by CEU. For her, these experiences significantly enhanced her curriculum vitae. With the support of her professors Dr. LG Cruz, Dr. Zenaida Los Baños
him the TikTok Creator of The Year Award, a well-deserved recognition of his contributions to healthcare awareness and accessibility. As he continues to create engaging and informative content, Arshie’s impact is sure to extend far beyond the screens of his viewers, making healthcare information more accessible and comprehensible for everyone.
Arshie has also been recognized internationally when he bagged the Best Regional Influence in the Philippines during the Thailand Influencers Awards 2022.
Arshie is a proud alumnus of CEU Makati where he obtained both his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees.
and Dr. Julieta Dungca, who is also the Dean of the School of Science and Technology, Irish was able to participate in these special programs.
She also takes pride in being a part of well-known cosmetic companies such as VMV Hypoallergenics where she contributed to the development of multiple globally sold products, with the Skin Bloom Blush sticks standing as her personal pinnacle. These versatile sticks, available in nine shades, serve as hypoallergenic blush-ons, highlighters, bronzers, and even eyeshadows. After four years, she transitioned to Dermpharma as a Research Institute Supervisor. Two years later, she became a Research and Development Assistant Manager at Unilever. It was her relocation to Europe that caused her to part ways with her dream company.
Now, Irish holds the esteemed role of Quality Manager at Maria Galland Paris, a luxury cosmetics entity in Europe. This position gives her the privilege to travel across various nations for critical meetings. At the same time, she is presently pursuing a Master’s degree in Marketing in the University of Salford, United Kingdom.
“Along the journey, there will be individuals who won’t support all your aspirations. However, if you hold your goals in your heart and mind, you will eventually attain it, so always dream big!,” said Irish.
The captivating narrative of achievement of Irish is a true inspiration to all aspiring cosmetic scientists. The field of Cosmetic Science offers wide employment opportunities not just in the country but abroad. From formulating groundbreaking products to conducting cuttingedge research, this field offers a diverse range of career paths that allow graduates to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
CEU Alumna Appointed as PRC Board of Optometry Chairperson
The Centro Escolar University School of Optometry proudly acknowledges the remarkable achievements of its alumna, Hon. Irene Christine C. Peliño, who has recently been appointed as the Chairperson of the Professional Regulatory Board of Optometry.
“Being a chairperson entails a lot of responsibilities. It does not mean you always have to be the leader but also a good follower,” said Hon. Peliño.
Before assuming the role of a chairperson, Hon. Peliño actively contributed to optometry societies in Iloilo. The chapter she was part of received the Outstanding Chapter award, recognizing their impactful initiatives for the underprivileged and marginalized communities, alongside their active involvement in advancing the profession.
Despite the demands of her current position, Hon. Peliño makes time to visit her family in Iloilo, and she cherishes the moments spent reminiscing about her college days during Optometrist board examinations held at CEU.
Returning to the campus, she expresses happiness and pride in witnessing the substantial improvements, citing the development of the North Gate and new buildings.
“I feel happy every time I come back here because I have lots of fond memories here and I am proud because I have seen a lot of improvements in the campus. The North Gate did not look like that nor the buildings before. When we were studying here, this building where the Optometry lab is did not exist. We only used the Concepcion Aguila Hall for all our Optometry subjects,” recalled Hon. Peliño.
During her student years, the dedicated Ilongga eye doctor prioritized her studies, aiming to excel in her finals despite the challenges that often resulted in sleepless nights.
Hon. Peliño attributes her success to the values instilled in her by CEU, emphasizing the importance of always giving one’s best. This advice, she passes on to aspiring optometrists, encouraging them to overcome obstacles with tenacity and to cultivate a genuine passion for their profession.
Hailing from a family deeply rooted in optometry, Hon. Peliño is the third generation to uphold this tradition. Their journey began in 1919 with her grandfather’s establishment of a clinic, creating a legacy that continues to thrive through her exemplary contributions to the field.

1. Diwa ng Escolarian
Theme song for 2023 CEU Sportsfest
Lyrics: Dr. Sharon Galang
Music: Prof. Ian Gabriel Corpuz
Arrangement: Ralph Joseph Dauz
The theme song was a collaborative effort of the faculty and the students of School of Education, Liberal Arts, Music, and Social Work (SELAMS), who hosted the 2023 CEU Sportsfest. The lyrics were composed by Dr. Sharon Galang and through the leadership of its Dean, Dr. Maria Rita D. Lucas, to celebrate the 100 years of SELAMS. The idea of strong and healthy Escolarians working together to succeed was incorporated in the lyrics. The musical arrangement applied is easy-to-sing and easy-toremember and was made by Prof. Ian Gabriel Corpuz, a faculty of the Conservatory of Music. The arrangement for orchestra was created, in turn, by a music production and engineering third year student, Mr. Ralph Joseph Dauz.
2. Ama, Patawarin Mo Sila
First of the Seven Last Words Composition by Prof. Lester Delgado
The song composition, Ama, Patawarin Mo Sila, is based on the first (Like 23:24) of Seven Last Words which talks about Jesus’ plea to God, the Father for His mercy. The music is like telling a story with affirmation. This was written to give a message of hope during the time of the pandemic.
3. IBARRA, the Musical Music by Prof. Joed Balsamo
The musical is based on the novel “Noli Me Tangere”, adapted into a play by Jomar Fleras, transformed to KANSER in 2015 and recalibrated to Ibarra in 2022 with additional materials by Paul Morales to focus the story on the main character, Crisostomo Ibarra. Prof. Balsamo captured the audience with his music through the actor Piolo Pascual as Ibarra. Made for 13 musicians and a theater cast, the production was fully an original Filipino modern musical.

The GEC Project: Grace.
Endurance. Courage.
by Therese Galero
Howshould one view opportunities? “With gratitude, of course”, all of us would answer. With humility. With courage. With thanks. We often hear people say that opportunities come to those who wait. But blessings also come to those who seek it, thrive for it, cry for it. Dare for it.
“Strike while the iron is hot!” I can almost hear my loving professor, Dr. Borabo cheering for me, telling me that my hands and heart are big enough to seize each with an embrace. However, Dr. B would be shocked when she realized how I managed to embrace, with my hands and knees trembling, bombarded by fear and not with joy.
This is an entry made for those who feel the same way.
Those who feel little, despite the big waves of praise.
Those clouded with doubt and confusion, even when the world speaks of clarity.
Read on and welcome fellow scared Champion!
I used to say and claim to my mom, out loud, with my arms crossed and my head facing down: I won’t be rich, I’m going to be a teacher. Let’s hope Christian (my younger brother) grows fond of technology to finally cut the ties of our poverty. My mom, as a superstitious, anxious person, knocked on every wooden instrument her eyes met. “How dare you say that! Of course you’ll be rich!”. “You are this! You are that!”, she continued, with a parade of compliments as I watched the funeral of my dreams and passion.
Because for me, this was it. Live a life of teaching. After graduation, I pictured myself teaching in an ordinary school, among ordinary students; living an ordinary life far from those advertised on Instagram: big boats and big dreams.
And what was wrong with that?
It was not because I was lazy– I strove hard during my college years. It wasn’t because I was giving up, either. I was excited to see my classroom and purchase the “very good” ink stamps. It’s just that, I thought, this was the inevitable. This was the big plan.
Man plans, and God laughs. In my case, God intervened too.
One afternoon, Dr. Opina, the head of the Languages department of my dear alma mater, CEU, who of course molded me as an educator, told us that she was looking for teacher applicants.
CEU was never an option for me. I was a fresh grad. Had adequate, good, but never brilliant grades. I received my first grade of three in Math during the first semester of college, and I had countless warning tickets from SAO for not wearing the proper uniform.
“Me? A college instructor? In my dreams, maybe.” I laughed, and then God planned.
I still sent my resume, though. You know, for the sake of trying. But obviously, I was certain that it
wouldn’t work. It just is impossible.
“No! It’s impossible.” I said, after the interview.
“No! It’s impossible.” I said, waiting for my official CEU employee ID.
“No! It’s impossible.” I said, turning my microphone on, and teaching my first class.
“No! It’s impossible.” I said, receiving my first teacher’s day cake.
“Try me.” God replied.
This is grace
Someone like me, who had endured a lot in childhood, wouldn’t believe that she too will provide comfort and solace among her students who are encountering the same situations.
Someone like me, who despised learning grammar and calling the concepts “insufferable” would not believe that she is now teaching the difference between past progressive and past perfect tenses in a fun and enjoyable way.
And someone like me would not think that an opportunity for writing for CHED will come her way.
This is grace, and grace, as I found out, is granted not because we deserve it, but because God, in His infinite kindness, chooses to give it. It is not a star stamp given out of our obedience, or how many Sunday masses we’ve been in.
Grace is here, not because we strove for it, or overdosed ourselves with caffeine.
Grace is here, just because.
A lesson I learned the hard way: grace is a seed not earned, but a chance meant to be fostered. Some time ago, my Lola said to me: Pray that God provides you with the discipline and capability to take care of your blessings. We’re often so busy asking for gifts, and longing for new ones, that we forget how to nourish those we have now.
When the celebratory banners began to fade with colors and the real work started, grace felt like a burden. It’s easy to brag about it, you know.
“Lola, magsusulat ako for CHED!” I gleefully declared. Little did she know how quiet I’d been during the entire process of doing so.
Parenthood is just 90% showing up, I once heard from the show Modern Family. I agree with this if we replace the word parenthood with endurance.
In a nutshell, the CHED project entailed that as educators, we need to craft learning modules that will boost the English proficiency levels of Filipino learners. These learning materials contained a variety of English concepts from grammar to vocabulary and it was so interesting that students could effortlessly utilize the language not only in academic pursuits but with real-life and conversational settings, too. These modules were also embedded with their respective videos, further explaining the content and information. Mrs. Pegenia wore a chef’s attire as she shared the English words utilized in the field of food and cuisine. Sir Ryan included his trademark
love for sports and healthy living as he encouraged the students to craft their fitness plans, and I admired how Dr. Lucero sang the song “Made You Look” by Meghan Trainor to incorporate English and sustainable fashion. Led by Dr. Opina, the module writers team had indeed printed their teaching hallmarks with every module written. As such, I could tell that one was created by Atty. Riparip, because of its conciseness, efficiency, and how the concepts emphasized social justice. His videos also beamed with authenticity, watching them felt like I was inside a newsroom studio.
Being a product of CEU and by these educators, it felt as if I was given a front-row seat on the behind-the-scenes of quality Escolarian learning. The Ciencia Y Virtud potion was concocted by familiar, outstanding alchemists, sprinkling gifts and power unique to each. This was their version of endurance for the project, along with the late-night Friday meetings, pilot testing sessions, validation processes, and appearing camera-ready as we shoot the lesson clips.
Including these, my endurance was added with further forms. As I observed my fellow teachers write each learning objective with precision and intention, I struggled to find the correct Bloom’s Taxonomy verb. Do I use construct or draft? Formulate or improvise? This was not due to lack of knowledge, but because of the lack of conviction and the temptation to abandon my trademark as a writer, and to just follow whatever the majority is doing. After all, they’re tenured, capable, tested, and proven. I was new, unsure, and still being measured. My form of endurance is having the nerve, and the bravery to hush the voices of inferiority. It is having the will to continue with my drafts, even when I was confused by the differences between perfect and progressive tenses.
Endurance came in the forms of revising the videos, tweaking some activities, ensuring the accuracy of the B2-level words, and finally: being humble enough to know that I have a lot to learn; and that I did my part, doubtful. I did it all, while insecure. I was frustrated at my lackings. I did it frowning, quiet, like learning how to surf. This was my process of unbecoming to become because all of a sudden, I could understand the discussions, and perspective of the team. I knew the jargon, I agreed to some suggestions, and have allowed the constructive feedback to chisel the final touches of my first piece as a teacher: a module that discussed concepts on Safety, Accidents, and Emergencies using B2-level English to improve the macro skills proficiency of Filipino college learners.
One important realization I have for this journey is that courage isn’t mustered or manifested. It is accumulated with every little “yes” we give on ventures that aim to expand us as individuals. It is the 1 percent that would later on build into 2, 5, 10, 30, 50, finally allowing us to give our 100% yes to bigger projects our past selves think we cannot handle. As it turns out, courage isn’t hoped for. It is not a magic spell that appears when we’re ready, but one that you develop when you let yourself stumble, make necessary mistakes, learn, and unlearn.
Courage is not the key to opportunities; it is the very door itself.
It is time to break away from the belief that we only deserve good when we are good. Inherently, courage is the grace God shared to us, allowing us to step towards doors even when we’re starting from scratch or picking up from 0, even when we are at our worst, even when we are surrounded by our insecurities.
While doubt whispers the what ifs, courage shouts to us “even when!”
So, how should one view opportunities? With grace, endurance and courage, even when you feel undeserving.

Mapa klase, mapa-duty man yan Alam kong lahat tayo ay kinakabahan
Matic Thank you Lord, talaga!
Lungkot, saya, hirap at ginhawa
Hindi man naging gano’n kasaya ang college life
Nagpapatuloy. Lumalaban.
What it takes to
be a physician
by Alex Bienvenido J. Alip, Jr.
Every time I interview medical school applicants, a question that I ask quite routinely is “Why is studying medicine so difficult?” Of course, one obvious answer is that eventually, you would be dealing with a human life. The well-being of the patient, in fact, his survival, in many instances, would be in the hands of the doctor. Thus, there is no room for any error and no mistake in judgment is acceptable, or at the very least, such is kept at a minimum or even negligible. Arriving at the most probable diagnosis and subsequently, instituting the most appropriate procedures and treatment measures are a given and should always be the desired outcome of any transaction concerning health and illness. It therefore comes as no surprise that the formation of a physician is so painstakingly rigorous, beginning from the earliest step of being a medical student all the way to his development as a capable, full-fledged expert in the medical field.
The training of medical students encompasses both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, and added to that is promoting the proper attitude and work ethic. The medical school provides the necessary environment and the suitable tools for this ideal to emerge. Indeed, it is said that competence should be paired with nurturance. And nowhere is this most discernible than in the atmosphere of preparing for a career in medicine. Perhaps, this is the construct that distinguishes the School of Medicine from other courses; it is not just the difficulty, or the length of time, or the cost measured in terms of effort and even by monetary figures; it is the overall undertaking towards a noble calling.
That is precisely our aspiration in the School of Medicine: to provide the students with that singular experience of learning and serving at the same time.
Mulat
Dugo at pawis, inaalay araw-araw, Mapabuti lamang iyong minamahal.
Centro Escolar University Alumni Foundation Inc.
Welcome to a Continuing Life of Ciencia y Virtud!
GREETINGS to the graduates of Class 2024! We happily welcome you as the newest alumni members of our Centro Escolar University Alumni Foundation Inc. (CEU AFI)!
You come into a Foundation that gives us an exceptional opportunity to continue living up to our Escolarian core principle of Ciencia y Virtud or Knowledge and Virtue set by our University founders, Doña Librada Avelino and Doña Carmen de Luna.
To illustrate, here we share our major programs...
CIENCIA
Continuing Professional Development
The CEU Ciencia principle focuses on acquiring knowledge as an integral part of the Escolarian life even after one’s graduation. To help alumni live up to this principle, CEU AFI has set Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as its major program.
To implement the CPD program, CEU AFI holds seminars on updates in various fields aligned with the University’s academic programs.
At the CEU AFI General Assembly on May 25, 2024, Dr. Milagros Borabo, presented projects to implement the CEU AFI Continuing Professional Development Program for 2024 and beyond, assuring that Escolarian alumni remain abreast of technological advances in their chosen fields.
Scholarships. Importantly, CEU AFI grants scholarships to children of alumni allowing them to experience Excellence in Education, as our University has been known for.
Every school year, CEU Alumni Chapters extend the grants to children of their member alumni, thus initiating the students into the life of Escolarian Ciencia.
VIRTUD
Virtud in the Classroom. Virtues-Faith, Hope, and Charity--are parts of the Escolarian mark.
Faith and Hope are fortified by Religion classes and daily noon Masses at the CEU Chapel — even as the University is a nonsectarian school.
Pilgrimage. On May 15, 2024, CEU AFI gathered alumni for a Marian Pilgrimage to seven churches. At right, the Escolarian pilgrims at the Carmel of Mary Star of the Sea Church in Tanay, Rizal.
Community Outreach Program. Charity has become a way of life so that when they go out of the Pink Walls, alumni just naturally reach out to those in need through various projects of their respective alumni chapters, ministering to the poor, the abandoned, and victims of calamities.

Celebrating 45 Years of Blessings and Successes: CEU Malolos Holds a Motorcade Event
by Tiarra Ysabela A. Joaquin
From Guiguinto City across the historical streets of the City of Malolos, Centro Escolar University held a motorcade in line with the celebration of its 45th
Founding Anniversary. At exactly 6 am, the university's distinguished alumni, faculty, staff, and student leaders representing each college department arrived at Tabang, Guiguinto Circle on Saturday, November 11, 2023.
With the thumping beats of the bass drums and vibrant pink flags of the university waving, the Escolarian pride undeniably screamed across the two cities.
Malolos proudly waved their hands and radiantly smiled, exhibiting the institution's 45 years of blessings and successes.
The procession was followed by a thanksgiving ceremony held at the famous CEU façade, Pilar Hidalgo Lim Building, which also gave a glimpse of the biggest and much-awaited 45th Grand Alumni Homecoming on December 9, 2023.
Vice President and Dean of Studies of CEU Malolos, Dr. Maria Flordeliza Anastacio, expressed her gratitude towards the Escolarian community in her opening remarks. She emphasized how the first CEU campus established outside Metro Manila in 1978 with a mere 592 enrollees has continuously grown.
Guiguinto Vice Mayor Banjo S. Estrella, one of the outstanding alumni of CEU Malolos, was also present at the event. In his speech, he encouraged his fellow alumni to celebrate the grand reunion and embody the spirit of Escolarian pride. Mr. Estrella's presence did not only serve as one of the event's highlights but also as a reflection of gratitude towards his Alma Mater, looking back at how CEU Malolos molded him into a great and empathetic leader of change.
Escolarians of different generations ended the ceremony with a dance to the disco musical hits of the 70s such as the "Awitin Mo at Isasayaw Ko" and "Tayo'y Magsayawan" of VST & Company. Indeed, the CEU Malolos' pride is unwavering.
In line with the celebration of the 45th Founding Anniversary of CEU Malolos, Vice President Anastacio composed a song together with Mr. German O. De Guzman. It was played during the Grand Alumni Homecoming Event.
