Message from the UAP National President

Inthe grading system in most schools, A is on top of its own for students striving for excellence and greatness. It is no coincidence that A is the first letter in our English and Filipino alphabet - even in the vowels. And in our profession, A is the first letter of the words “architecture” and “architect.” Whenever we write or hear the letter A, we cannot stop thinking about its contribution to making most of our words sound right.

As we continue to delve into the middle of our organization, the UAP enabled us to give life to the letter A in our profession - AMPLIFY and ASSEMBLE.

The recent 49th UAP National Convention and the CONEX 2024 at SMX Convention Center brought us to the best convention and exhibition we have always dreamed of. Living up to its theme of AMPLIFY, the recently concluded convention already set the tone to figure out our very best at 50, our Golden Jubilee Anniversary. Our founders would have been so proud of what we had achieved in ASSEMBLING the VOICES of architects in futureproofing the profession and the organization.

With a spectacular roster of 49 speakers and lecturers from various industries in our society - architecture, engineering, lifestyle, politics, and other allied professions, the UAP created a unifying force of camaraderie and goodwill beyond professions and aspirations. On a personal note, it is surprising to hear some feedback from our friends in the international architecture community that our convention turned into a rockstar stage of ideas and topics that matter most to the architecture industry and the society of tomorrow.

to name a few - the presence of our neighbors in Southeast Asian architecture community like Arch. Chana Sumpalung (President, Association of Siamese Architects) and Arch. Melvin Sia (President, Singapore Institute of Architects) signifies their overwhelming support to our ambition to get along with the rest of the world in sharing our contribution to the architecture and built environment industry.

The recent National Convention also allowed me to report the accomplishment of my administration and the National Board of Directors in strengthening and maximizing the capabilities of our organization in taking care of every member’s welfare while preparing ourselves to adapt to the ever-changing digital landscape. The introduction of our new IM UAP Membership Card and its upcoming App, together with the recently improved UAP website, where each member has an opportunity to showcase their portfolio and download essential documents for their project needs, highlight our organization’s commitment to delivering the best membership experience in adherence to the local and international standards. As the newly-elected leaders of our organization await their turn to serve us, may they continue to improve and develop the projects and initiatives we started.

I congratulate everyone who attended and supported our 49th UAP National Convention and CONEX 2024. The remarkable efforts made by the team led by Arch. Christian Romulo Vasquez and Arch. Antonio Valdez, with the help of our past and present members of the National Board of Directors and the UAP College of Fellows, together with our industry partners and stakeholders, are highly commendable and deserve the best applause we can give. Beyond the NatCon, let us continue striving for more opportunities for

we can be.

Let us also greet the 17th recipient of our UAP Likha Gold Medal, Arch. Jose Mari Canizares, for his dedication and his outstanding contributions to Filipino architecture, alongside the twenty newly-elevated members of the College of Fellows.

In just a few weeks or months, I will spend most of my time with my family and loved ones, whom I missed most throughout my service as your National President and other positions I handled in the past. It will be my forever honor and pleasure to serve the UAP and its members through ups and downs and thick and thin. I look forward to more greatness and milestones in our next Fiscal Year in the advent of our 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary.

My warmest gratitude to the UAP Post team for Fiscal Year 2023-2024, led by Arch. Ericson Europa, for their unfailing commitment to scribing news, information, and inspiration straight to the general membership.

NATCON 49: Amplifying Excellence in Architecture

Inthe ever-evolving industry of architecture, innovation is the driving force that propels the profession forward, shaping the way we conceive, design, and inhabit our built environment. Last 17th to 20th of April 2024, a record number of more than eight thousand Filipino architects gathered at SMX Convention Center Manila in Pasay City for the highly anticipated 49th UAP National Convention, where the spotlight shone brightly on groundbreaking ideas, transformative technologies, and the future of the architectural practice.

At the core of the convention’s theme, “Amplify,” lay the notion of amplification – the act of magnifying, enhancing, and elevating. Throughout the event, architects embraced this concept with fervor, seeking to amplify their creativity, impact, and influence in the world. Workshops, panel discussions, and keynote presentations delved into a myriad of topics, each offering unique insights and perspectives on how architecture can be a catalyst for positive change.

As a second layer of the convention theme, “Amplify” is also applied to the modalities of communicating and maximizing the learning from this event. The convention’s contents will be eventually available in social media channels and in the event app through video on demand. This is to benefit other Filipino architects, here in the country and abroad, who were not able to attend the event, architecture students, and even attendees who would want to revisit the talks.

With the general topic of Day 1, “Amplify the Opportunities of the Future,” NATCON 49 started strong with the powerhouse of speakers led by Tim Fu, Georges Kachaamy, Douglas Leong, and Patrick Soriano. Among the several topics explored, the integration

of artificial intelligence (AI) into the practice of architecture emerged as a focal point, igniting discussions on its potential to revolutionize the field.

Against the backdrop of the convention’s overarching theme of “Amplify,” the discourse on AI in architecture resonated deeply, emphasizing the concept of augmenting human creativity and ingenuity with the power of machine intelligence. From design optimization to predictive analytics, AI offers architects a myriad of tools and capabilities to enhance efficiency, foster innovation, and push the boundaries of what is possible.

One of the key areas of discussion revolved around the role of AI in design optimization. By leveraging advanced algorithms and computational techniques, architects can generate and evaluate countless design iterations in a fraction of the time it would take using traditional methods. This not only streamlines the design process but also enables architects to explore a broader range of possibilities, ultimately leading to more informed and inspired design solutions.

Moreover, it was illustrated that AI holds immense potential in enhancing sustainability in architecture. Through data-driven analysis and simulation, AI algorithms can assess environmental factors, energy performance, and material efficiency to inform design decisions that minimize ecological impact and maximize resource efficiency. By harnessing the power of AI, architects can create buildings that not only respond to the needs of occupants but also harmonize with the natural environment, contributing to a more sustainable future.

Another compelling aspect of AI in architecture that was presented is its ability to facilitate generative design - where algorithms

iteratively generate and evaluate design alternatives based on a set of predefined goals and constraints. This iterative process of exploration and optimization can lead to novel design solutions that push the boundaries of conventional thinking, unleashing a wave of creativity and innovation in architectural practice.

However, alongside the excitement surrounding the integration of AI into architecture, discussions also touched upon the ethical and societal implications of this rapidly advancing technology. Questions were raised about issues such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the potential displacement of human labor. As architects embrace AI as a tool for amplifying their creativity and productivity, it is essential to ensure that its implementation is guided by ethical principles and a commitment to serving the broader interests of society.

The second day revolved around the topic, “Amplify Knowledge and Information,” and internationally renowned architects Roland Schinizer, Yahya Jan, Royal Pineda, and Felino Palafox shared their wisdom and aspirations for the profession. Each one has highlighted the importance of pursuit of excellence and collaboration in this day and age. Both are essential pillars of success in the field of architecture, playing a fundamental role in shaping the built environment and advancing the profession.

The discussions also focused on architecture as a dynamic and evolving field - shaped by advancements in technology, changes in society, and shifting cultural trends. Collaboration fosters a culture of continuous learning and growth, where architects, together with allied professionals, can exchange ideas, share best practices, and learn from each other’s experiences. By collaborating with peers, mentors, and interdisciplinary partners, architects can stay abreast of emerging trends, acquire new skills, and adapt to the evolving demands of the profession.

The speakers also emphasized the importance of a holistic design approach in every project - creating quality environments that respond to the needs and aspirations of individuals and communities. Collaboration is also a key aspect, enabling architects to engage with stakeholders, including clients, users, engineers, and other specialists, to gain a deeper understanding of the social, cultural, economic, and environmental context in which their projects exist. By integrating diverse perspectives and expertise, architects can create designs that are responsive, inclusive, and contextually relevant.

These talks have conveyed unparalleled expertise, insight, and inspiration - sparking meaningful conversations and pushing the profession to new heights. The speakers’ visionary ideas, innovative projects, and commitment to excellence were truly inspiring and have reminded the audience of the transformative power of architecture to shape the world we inhabit.

The last day’s topic, “Amplify the Voice of the Filipino Architects,” consisted of two plenary sessions graced by honorable speakers led by Sen. Aquilino Pimentel, Cong. Christopher de Venecia, UAP National President Arch. Richard Garcia, and UAP Immediate Past National President Arch. Armando De Guzman III.

The session started with the discussion of the Creative Industry Development Act, an enabling policy that aims to develop and advance the creative fields in the country. This was followed by the announcement of proposed house bills that will give the Filipino architect a stronger voice and reach in the public realm. The speakers reiterated how architects can contribute to built environments –through creating design that helps in promotion of economic growth, addressing environmental challenges and being custodians of national identity and pride.

It was also discussed how architects can also have the power to promote social equity and inclusion through their designs. By creating inclusive and accessible spaces, architects can help break down barriers and promote social cohesion and integration. Additionally, architects can address social disparities by widening their reach - to serve the needs of underserved populations and promote social justice.

The second session was a presentation of historical background to further clarity on the Supreme Court latest ruling declaring that only registered and licensed architects may prepare, sign, and seal the architectural documents. UAP proposed next steps and actions were also discussed.

It was emphasized in these two plenary sessions that the community of Filipino architects should be proactive in protecting their voice in both the community and the country - architects can engage with policymakers, government officials, and community leaders to advocate for policies and regulations that support the interests of

the architectural profession. Architects should assert their expertise and ensure that their contributions to the built environment are valued and respected.

As the convention drew to a close, the echoes of impassioned discussions and visionary ideas reverberated throughout the halls, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. Participants departed with renewed inspiration, armed with insights and strategies to amplify their impact and influence in the world of architecture.

In retrospect, this convention of Filipino architects themed “Amplify” was not merely a gathering of professionals but a celebration of the transformative power of architecture to amplify human experiences, enrich lives, and shape a better future for generations to come. As architects continue to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation, the possibilities for amplification are limitless, offering hope and inspiration for a world that is more vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable.

Jose Mari Canizares: UAP’s 17th and Cebu’s 1st Likha Awardee

Amidst the hustle and bustle of seminars, plenaries and fellowship activities during the recent UAP National Convention, a more solemn but significant ceremony took part inside the Function Hall 1 of the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. Following the investiture of 20 new Fellows also in the same venue, the formal bestowal of the 17th Likha Gold Medal was made in seemingly muted fashion with Cebuano architect Jose Mari Cañizares as the deserving recipient.

In Cebu, architect Canizares can be considered as among the leading lights of the profession, who are considered as homegrown architects. He is a graduate from Cebu Institute of Technology, passed the architect licensure examination last 1972, and immediately started his own architectural office.

Mari was among the architects, who were instrumental in the integration of three different associations of architects all over the Philippines at that time, uniting them into a common group, the United Architects Integration Committee, and now known as the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP).

As a prolific practitioner bound by good ethical conduct, Canizares is recognized by peers and clients alike. He was recognized as outstanding alumnus in the University of San Carlos (1979) and Cebu Institute of Technology (1990). In 1996, he was elevated to the prestigious UAP College of Fellows for his notable contribution to the architecture profession and outstanding service to the professional organization. In 2003, he was awarded “Architect of the Year” by the Professional Regulation Commission.

Over more than four decades, his architectural firm has designed and completed a long list of building projects ranging from quaint residences to landmark buildings. Today, as it celebrated its 50th year in the design and construction field, it has evolved into a “diversified practice complimented by youthful and aggressive partners and associates applying the same fundamental principles that started with the firm’s inception in 1972.” But when asked about his most favorite project, he would always reply: “The next one.”

With the prestigious award, Cañizares joins the ranks of architect luminaries such as Leandro Locsin, Gabriel Formoso, and Bobby Manosa, who continue to inspire the Filipino architecture community through many years of continuous dedication in producing notable architectural projects while maintaining the highest level of ethical practice and dignity in character.

Making EUAP History at NATCON 49

“Let us honor those who have paved the way for us, that we may now reap the present, and look forward to the future.”

Last 19th of April, 2024, the 15th Conferment of the UAP Members Emeritus for fiscal year 2023-2024 was held on Day 2 of the 49th UAP National Convention, at Plenary Hall 1 of the SMX Convention Center Manila, in Pasay City.

It was a very successful and well-received event, attended by some 200 guests, including the conferees’ families. It was a milestone and historical event, as it garnered the greatest number of conferees at a single conferment event in the 49-year history of UAP since it was founded in 1975. It was also the first time that a EUAP conferment ceremony had a solely dedicated block time and venue at any national convention.

It also proved to be the most inclusive by far, as it was the first time that members from foreign chapters were conferred as well, besides those emanating from the far regions. Out of the 109 nominees, 97 were conferred UAP Member Emeritus. Prior to this, UAP has only had 136 EUAPs.

UAP National had particularly wanted to confer this year as many members as possible, after having further streamlined the EUAP criteria and guidelines, recognizing them for their record of loyalty, remarkable service, and notable involvement in the architectural profession. The occasion also coincided with the pre-celebration of the grand 50th founding anniversary of UAP next fiscal year.

Editor’s Notes

The Assembly

One of the highlights of the UAP during the fourth and final quarter of FY 2023-2024 was the staging of the 49th UAP National Convention. The event, certainly, was a resounding success. With around 8,000 physical and virtual delegates in attendance, it is considered as the largest gathering of Filipino architects in history.

The over-all theme of the convention, “Amplify,” which means “to cause something to become more marked or powerful,” sought to enhance or expand all facets of the delegates’ experience during multi-day event. Moreover, NATCON 49 aimed to be a platform to resonate the ideas and insights generated to a wider range and to be able to reach audiences around the world.

But what was remarkable about this year’s National Convention was the totally new set up which was entirely different from any of the conventions of the UAP in the past. First, the introduction of the NATCON 49 mobile app demonstrated the annual convention’s digital transformation. Also, the four-day event showcased an impressive roster of speakers from renowned local and international architectural firms who covered a wide spectrum of topics.

The delegates were treated to unforgettable social events filled with entertainment and fun. The performances of Joey G., Ben & Ben, and Parokya Ni Edgar were spectacularly intense and exhilarating. The architectural tours were also notable. Participants truly appreciated the rich architectural knowledge and information they acquired from the tours. But among the many topics explored during the whole duration of the convention, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the practice

of architecture was the most significant and interesting subject. The matter of AI has certainly sparked endless debates on various concerns like design optimization, sustainable and generative design, and ethical implications.

The amplification of ideas, like the topic of AI, during NATCON 49, has definitely ignited discussions within the architectural realm. These conversations have challenged architects to embrace the transformation of the architecture industry towards positive change in the dynamic and innovative future ahead.

UAP Summer Capital Turns Over School Restroom

Visiting the remote village of Boklaoan in Kapangan, Benguet last year, members of UAP Summer Capital Chapter saw the need for a comfortable and hygienic restroom for the kindergarten students of Boklaoan Elementary School.

Having the expertise and experience in planning and design, the architects were tapped by the school officials to help the school in providing them with a restroom, which is very essential in the conduct of classes. Hence, partnering with members of Benguet State University - Secondary Laboratory School (BSU-SLS) Class ’96, the chapter formulated a program to address this urgent need.

UAP Summer Capital turns over the kindergarten restroom upon completion.

The design for the kindergarten restroom was tailor fitted in accordance with the ergonomics and anthropometric data of the users. The urinal, water closet, and lavatory heights were adjusted for the convenience of the pupils. It was meant to provide a safe and supportive environment for the children to develop their coping skills and practice self-directed behaviors. The facilities would help promote healthy hygienic practices while boosting self-esteem and confidence among learners. It was designed and located where it is conveniently accessible to the children at all times.

The real test came when the project was to be implemented. The school is a two-hour journey from the Baguio City through narrow and unpaved roads. The

delivery of construction materials to the site, hence posed a great challenge. Thus, strategic planning was required before the commencement of the project. Local workers were tapped during the roughing-in stages. Later on, skilled workers were brought to join the construction and for finishing works. The construction for the restroom was completed in a span of fourteen days.

The restroom was finally turned over to the school officials on March 10, 2024. One of the goals of the project is to create a template for the construction of additional restrooms in the future, utilizing cost effective methods and planning to bring safe and hygienic facilities to the community.

UAP Rizal East Spearheads Art Immersion Tour

Inhonoring the uniqueness of the artistry of Angono, Rizal, and recognizing the historical significance and cultural influence of its architecture, UAP Rizal East Chapter, headed by Chapter President Ruiza Anne April D. Diestro, participated as one of the collaborating organizations for the closing of National Arts Month (NAM) 2024, bannering the theme “Ani ng Sining, Bayang Malikhain,” held on March 16, 2024.

The celebration was spearheaded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in collaboration with LAMBANA: Angono Women Artists Collective with the support of Municipality of Angono as the host. It was attended by esteemed guests from the NCAA, LAMBANA PH-Women’s Art Collective, Angono Tourism Office representatives, teachers, and art enthusiasts.

A particular event was organized to channel architecture as an artistic and cultural expression and was embodied in an art immersion tour named “Gala de Angono.” The chapter, represented by its chapter president, served as the tour guide of the following itineraries: Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs, the oldest artwork in the Philippines, which traces the artistic roots of the homegrown artists; the Lambana Exhibit at KUTA Art Space with the theme “Tagni-tagni: Fabrics and Patterns III”; Bahay ni Botong, the residence of the National Artist for Visual Arts, Carlos “Botong” Francisco; the famous street murals of the representation of Botong’s art works; and lastly, the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Saint Clement.

Embracing the Strays: A Fur-Ever Love Campaign of UAP Area B

With the growing popularity of keeping pets, particularly cats and dogs, it is not surprising that the hobby has rubbed on to most architects. However, the number of abandoned and neglected pets has also increased. Hence, UAP Area B held a CSR activity to provide a decent rescue center for stray cats and dogs. On March 23, 2024, the Area B architects (ABA), led by Area B Vice President Annie Pugeda, spearheaded the “Embrace the Strays: The UAP Area B Fur-Ever Love Campaign” a heartfelt initiative focusing on awareness, advocacy, community engagement, education, and making a real impact for our furry friends.

It was a two-part event with separate morning and afternoon activities. In the morning, the architects visited the Sweet Pets Haven, an animal rescue shelter and foster home in Barangay De Ocampo, Trece Martires City, Cavite. They were welcomed by Ms. Joy Acosta, owner of the shelter center, who graciously received the architects’ donation of medicines, hygiene products, pet accessories, and dog/ cat food. The architects also had a feeding program for the stray pets.

The afternoon activity was held at the Zamiro Private Events and Resort, also in Barangay De Ocampo, Trece Martires City, Cavite, where a formal program was held. The event was graced by UAP National President Richard Garcia, who delivered an inspirational message.

A highlight of the program was the presentation of the development plan of a proposed animal rescue shelter by Arch. Juan Miguel Domingo. The proposal, to be located on a 2,000-square-meter lot, includes additional facilities for pets and can accommodate more strays.

Part of the campaign of ABA is an ongoing fund drive. Funds solicited will be used for the realization of this dream project. ABA is appealing to fellow architects and friends for donations for this noble undertaking. Interested parties may contact: 0917-5990904.

Exploring Manila’s Heritage and Future: NATCON 49 Arkitours

Inthe heart of Manila lies a treasure trove of history and vision for the future, encapsulated within the Manila Sampaloc NATCON 49 Arkitours. Offering a unique blend of the past, present, and future, this curated tour took participants on a captivating journey through the iconic Manila Central Post Office and beyond.

The Manila Central Post Office stands as a testament to Manila’s rich architectural heritage. Designed by Juan M. Arellano, Tomás

Mapúa, and Ralph Doane in the neoclassical style, the building once served as the main postal hub of the Philippines. Despite enduring the ravages of World War II, the building was faithfully reconstructed in 1946, preserving much of its original grandeur.

However, tragedy struck in 2023 when a devastating fire engulfed the historic structure, leaving it severely damaged. Yet, from the ashes emerged a renewed sense of determination to restore and revitalize this architectural gem. Through insightful commentary

from architectural experts Arch. Joel Rico and Arch. Franz Ignacio, tour participants gained a deeper understanding of the building’s storied past, recent challenges, and exciting future prospects.

The tour’s journey continued along the banks of the Pasig River, where the newly installed Pasig River Esplanade awaited. Here, amidst the bustling urban landscape, the “Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli: Pasig River Urban Development Showcase Area” stood as a beacon of hope for revitalizing Manila’s waterways. Led by visionary Architects William Ti and Arvin Panganiban of WTA Architecture and Design Studio, participants were treated to insights into the project’s innovative design and its seamless integration with surrounding landmarks such as the rehabilitated Jones Bridge and the Central Post Office building.

Almost 100 participants of the arkitour came home with a renewed spirit for architecture and a sense of pride as an architect by understanding how our profession plays a vital role in the formulation of Manila’s past, present, and future.

As participants strolled along the Esplanade, they could not help but feel a sense of awe at the harmonious blend of history and modernity. The Manila Sampaloc NATCON 49 Arkitours not only celebrated Manila’s rich heritage but also offered a glimpse into a future where preservation, innovation, and community converge to shape a cityscape worthy of admiration.

UAP SorKas Celebrates National Women’s Month

Proclamation No. 227, s. 1988 was signed by then President Corazon Aquino on March 17, 1988. It provides for the observance of the month of March as “Women’s Role in History Month,” or the National Women’s Month. With this proclamation, the late President “calls upon the people of the Philippines to observe the month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

To celebrate the 2024 National Women’s Month during the month of March, the United Architects of the Philippines – Sorsogon Kasanggayahan Chapter (UAP-SorKas) held an outreach program for the Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) at the BJMP Gubat District

Jail in Gubat, Sorsogon on March 13, 2024. The beneficiaries, however, were not only the female inmates, but the male as well.

For the conduct of this project, titled “Dalaw, Lingap Tulong,” the chapter, headed by Chapter President Narciso “Makki” Jasareno, partnered with the Gubat Municipal Police Station and Sorsogon Police Provincial Office under the guidance of Jail Inspector Samuel Mirandilla, Acting Warden of the Sorsogon Police Provincial Office and Police Lt.Col. Paz Magistrado, head of the Gubat Municipal Police Station.

During the outreach program, members of UAP SorKas distributed hygiene kits to the PDLs. Each kit consisted of toiletries and

basic body care items, such as toothpaste, toothbrush, bath soap, shampoo, and face towel - necessities that are often taken for granted but vital for daily comfort and hygiene. Awareness lectures were also conducted by the jail and police personnel. Moreover, snacks were served to the PDLs.

The smiles on the faces of the PDLs were noticeable during the half-day outreach. The happiness and the gratitude expressed by the PDLs were a testament to the impact of UAP Sor-Kas’ outreach effort during the National Women’s Month. The program indeed left a sense of hope and inspiration to these PDLs, both male and female.

CBD Goes to BKK: An International Heritage Tour

Bangkok, the capital and most populous city of Thailand, is popularly known not only in Asia but all over the world as a vibrant and tourist friendly destination for its intricate architecture of grand palaces, temples, museums, and of course, for its delicious food and great shopping havens!

For these reasons, after extensive canvassing and thorough deliberations for its first ever international heritage tour, the UAP Makati CBD Chapter chose this captivating city. Dubbed as “CBD Goes to BKK,” the chapter, together with some family members and friends, explored the wonderful metropolis from March 14 to 17, 2024 with the aim of understanding Thai architecture while consequently promoting architecture appreciation amongst non-architects.

Upon arriving in Bangkok, the architects immediately went on a walking tour around the vicinity of their hotel at Ratchathewi. Early morning the next day, the tour guide fetched the group at the hotel and explored The Ancient City, the largest open-air museum in the world located at Samut Prakan, where magnificent castles and temples, both replicas and originals, along with meticulously crafted sculptures and monuments, somehow give you a quick tour around the country. The following day, the group visited Wat Pho, a first-class royal Buddhist temple known for The Reclining Buddha, and Wat Arun. Wat Arun is one of the best landmarks to represent Thailand which was named after the Hindu god “Aruna,” characterized by rays of the rising sun. In the evening, the group enjoyed a cruise along the Chao Phraya River, which gave the best view of the city at night time, while offering a sumptuous buffet

dinner with highly commendable entertainment. On the last day, everyone enjoyed some last minute shopping at the Platinum Mall and Central World for “pasalubong, souvenirs, and clothing items.

It was truly an enjoyable experience to explore a city known for very detailed and good architecture while also creating lasting memories with family, friends, and colleagues. “CBD Goes to BKK” gave the chapter an opportunity to come in contact with the rich history, culture and environment of the Land of Smiles.

The UAP Palawan Chapter, with sense of pride and responsibility to humanity’s future, has delivered a corporate social responsibility project to restore the beloved St. Joseph the Worker Parish Church at the Iwahig Penal Colony in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. This church is dear to the hearts of the people of Iwahig, and as one of the main historical sites of Iwahig, the building has achieved an almost symbolic status in the eyes of the many who call it home.

This project is a collaboration between the UAP Palawan Chapter, headed Chapter President Kristine Joanne Tombucon and the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa, represented by Fr. Bobby Sta. Cruz, Fr. Jose Ruel Tuale, and Bishop Socrates Mesiona, who

were the key persons in providing assistance in the church’s completion. Further, thanks for the vital contributions of the industry partners, especially Boysen Paints Philippines, which made the renovation project a resounding success.

With the completion of church renovation project and with the celebratory spirit of May 1st, the hearts of the Iwahig community swell with immeasurable happiness and thanksgiving as the newly-revamped St. Joseph Church was finally inaugurated and blessed. Ground Zero: Rebuilding the UAP-Manila Metro Chapter

January 2023 brought a new beginning for the UAP-Manila Metro Chapter. We began to reconnect in person as we transition away from the pandemic. “Rebuilding” best describes the start of our leadership, as we focused on improving member attendance. To address this, we conceptualized and implemented unique programs offering benefits, incentives, and quality GMMs for the chapter. The Metro Architects (MAX) Programs were created with the vision of ensuring our profession’s excellence and sustainability for the future.

This began with the Metro Architects Xchange wherein we invited the presence of high-caliber speakers to share their expertise on different aspects such as lighting design, fire safety design, marketing and branding, technological advancements in electric vehicles, retrofitting old buildings, and a lot more. In conjunction with this is the Metro Architects Xpo, a scaleddown version of the CONEX held every GMM wherein 12 to15 of our industry partners present their latest offerings, establishing networking opportunities and connections. The combined effort of these two programs every month allows each GMM to be unique and educational, providing our members with something to anticipate and look forward to every month.

In an effort to reinforce our unity and camaraderie as a chapter, we started the Metro Architects Xplore Program. We organized Arkitours in Escolta, Binondo, the National Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of Natural History, and the Excuadra Unioil Tower. Our effort to strengthen the Metro Chapter’s engagement with UAP National proved to be a success when the Metro Architects Xplore program was adopted for the 49th National Convention. The San Nicolas walking tour last April 21, 2024 was a transformative journey, as we explored the architectural gems and heritage sites that deserve more than just our recognition, but also support for preservation.

In this journey towards uniting and future-proofing our profession, we realized that we must begin from the grass root level. Our generation of future architects have so much potential, as we have witnessed from our Metro Architects Xcellence MAX Best Thesis Competition, where top architecture universities across the Philippines participated by presenting their exceptional thesis studies. The MAX Best Thesis Competition and its twin program, the MAX Job Fair, was a first in history. These programs support future generations of architects reach their full potential and to bridge the gap between the academe and the architectural practice.

Following this effort to incite positive change at the grassroot level, we spearheaded PROJECT HULMA: Reshaping and Enhancing EARISTArchitecture Learning Facilities dedicated to the EARIST-College of Architecture and Fine Arts. We supported in revitalizing their technological facilities and teaching equipment, thereby elevating the standard of learning architecture in the Philippines.

The 14k Metro Legacy marker is unveiled as part of the Metro Architects Xaltation program. We tirelessly focused our efforts on rebuilding our chapter, and in looking towards the future, we pondered how to sustain active member participation. Our response to this was the tier system named Metro Architects Xcelsior. It determines the members’ status by their involvement, service, and contributions to the chapter, as it is designed to motivate members in alignment with their respective contributions to the chapter. In collaboration with this system is the Metro Architects Xemplary program. This offers rewards and incentives to chapter members based on their corresponding level on the tier system. For the passing of Arch. Jerry Caw, former Metro Chapter Charter Director, a total of P80,000 of cash donation was given to the bereaved as a sign of his legacy to the Metro Chapter. The combination of these two programs prove that our members’ dedication to the chapter are met with recognition and rewards.

In an effort to give back to our member’s active participation and support, we launched the Metro Architects Xclusive. Various giveaways and exclusive merchandise are made available to the members under this program. In league with this program is the Metro Architects Xaltation where we celebrate the exemplary contributions of our members to the community. Lastly, a program dedicated to strengthening our bonds through recreational activities is manifested through the Metro Architects Xuberance program. This builds on the existing Metro Badminton Program, and the inclusion of Metro Basketbolero and Metro Architects Bike, leading up to three existing sports programs under this project. These three programs are anchored on strengthening bonds, reinforcing their sense of belongingness, and recognizing our members’ advocacies, showing that our connection as a chapter transcends the limits of our differences.

Lastly, in order maintain equitable and democratic practices within the chapter, the Metro Architects Xposition was established to work hand in hand to advocate for complete transparency and accountability of funds. This is also in accordance with the directives of the UAP National towards a fair and democratic system in all chapters. These programs are the chapter’s prohibition of favoritism and unjust treatment, and to protect our members’ voice, regardless of practice, race, age, and gender orientation.

The 10 MAX Programs, Metro Architects Xchange, Xpo, Xplore, Xcellence, Xclusive, Xaltation, Xuberance, Xcelsior, Xemplary, and Xposition, Project Hulma CSR Project would not be possible without the support of the Metro Chapter members and elders. May these projects continue to benefit the members of the UAP Metro Chapter, and may they inspire similar initiatives in all UAP chapters, encouraging the advancement of Filipino architecture across the board.

Road to Gold: The One-Year Countdown Kicks Off in Cebu

When the UAP was formed through the merger of three separate architectural organizations in the 70’s namely the Philippine Institute of Architects, League of Philippine Architects, and the Association of Philippine Government Architects, the chartering of the organization’s first-ever chapter happened in Cebu - it was no less than UAP Cebu Chapter. With this, the leaders of the organization saw it fit to hold the kick-off of the yearlong countdown to the UAP’s golden year in the Queen City of the South.

Last March 22, 2024, the ballroom of NuStar Resort’s Fili Hotel glistened as Cebuano architects gathered with the leaders of the organization to jumpstart the celebration of a milestone. UAP Vice President for Area C

Rolan Paolo Alberto and District C1 Director Leartes Tabotabo, Jr. worked with the Chancellor of the UAP College of Fellows (COF) James Jao and a team of chapter presidents and select members from all 10 chapters of UAP’s Regional District C1 (RD C1) to hold various events, which are held just a few days before UAP’s 49th anniversary.

After a short opening program for the 3-day showcase of 50 architects from Central Visayas at SM City Cebu, the spotlight shifted to NuStar Resort Hotel for the Road to 50 Gala Night. Cebuano architects painted the town gold as they threw the confetti days ahead of the UAP’s anniversary on March 26. The UAP National Board, headed by National President Richard Garcia, as well as the UAP College of Fellows, headed

by Chancellor James Jao and the officers of the ten UAP Chapters of UAP RD C1 witnessed the testimonials, including one from Cebu City councilor and acting City Mayor Dondon Hontiveros. The night also came alive with great musical performances from Cebu’s homegrown talents.

The lighting of the UAP RDC1 Chapter logos in golden hues served as the main highlight of the night. Chapter presidents and charter members of the 10 UAP Chapters, namely, Cebu, Rajah Humabon, Dumaguete, Bohol, Datu Lapu Lapu, Sugbu, Cebu Leon Kilat, Metro Cebu, Cebu Fort San Pedro, and Cebu Fuente joined the UAP National President in the celebratory toast.

Another highlight was the inspirational message from one of the pioneering Cebuano architects, Jose Mari Canizares. Recently, the UAP National Board approved Canizares’ endorsement by the UAP COF as the 17th Likha Gold Medal Awardee of the UAP and was formally conferred his title during the UAP National Convention in Manila. The award is the highest distinction that may be bestowed by the organization upon a Fellow of the UAP. This news became a true source of pride and inspiration not just for Cebuano architects but many UAP members since he is the first Likha Awardee of the UAP from the Visayas-based chapter. With the prestigious award, Canizares joins the ranks of other Likha Awardees such as national artists for architecture, Leandro Locsin and Francisco “Bobby” Manosa, among others.

The UAP gala night in Cebu served as a celebration of close to 50 years of the organization’s promotion of the architecture profession to the public and in shaping the skylines of Filipino communities. It was also a reminder of the significant role of Cebuano architects in the conception of one of the most active professional organizations in the country and their noble contributions in making architecture better appreciated by the public. Cheers to another 50 strong years of honing Filipino architects and their valuable roles in making beautiful and functional buildings and spaces all over the country.

OnApril 25, 2024, UAP Datu Lapu-Lapu (DLL) Chapter marked its 45th anniversary with a vibrant celebration. Members of DLL, adorned in red and black, gathered at Casino Español de Cebu in Cebu City to commemorate the chapter’s achievements, challenges, and evolution from a small group of fewer than ten architects to an organization now comprising almost 300 members. The chapter was established in 1979 by Cristobal Espina, Filomena Espina, Priscillano “Tito” Borromeo, Filomeno Kangleon, Sr., Francis Cañaleta, Teodoro Trinidad, and Roberto Palconit. The chapter has been led by notable architects, including the Espina brothers, Maxwell and Yumi, who have served as chapter presidents and in various roles in the UAP National Board.

The celebration attracted district officers, presidents of other chapters, DLL fellows, and industry partners. The event was enlivened by engaging speeches, dynamic dancing, and an impressive project showcase. A highlight of the evening was the inspirational message by the guest of honor, Arch. Nestor “Boy” Liston, FUAP. He offered invaluable advice to

new architects, emphasizing the importance of joining large firms to gain experience, networking to meet potential clients and collaborators, starting a home-based office to reduce costs, providing pro bono services to the community, and actively participating in UAP activities.

This memorable event was made possible through the generous support of DLL’s industry partners: Boysen Paints Philippines, ArchiGlobal Inc., MaGNA CMGN Solutions, Philwood Decor Solutions, Häfele Philippines, Concepcion Carrier Air Conditioning, Savers Depot, Landlite, Studio Unosinotra, and Emperador Distillers Inc.

For 45 years, the DLL has steadfastly championed the advancement of the architecture profession in Cebu and the Philippines. As its members stand at the threshold of new possibilities, they are primed to perpetuate the ethos of innovation and collaboration. Celebrating Architectural Details: UAP Sugbu’s Thumbnail Awards

Tand

who demonstrate outstanding creativity, innovation, and attention to detail in designing small yet impactful elements within projects. As a chapter, UAP Sugbu strives to encourage and recognize its members’ works, instilling pride in their achievements regardless of the project’s scale. The event showcases the chapter members’ consistency in delivering excellent work.

Small elements, often designed with great care and precision, deserve their own spotlight. Hence, the Thumbnail Awards is dedicated to zooming in on the finer details and corners of architectural projects. This competition highlights the meticulous craftsmanship and conscious design decisions made by chapter members, proving that great work can be done on any scale. By focusing on these micro aspects, the awards aim to draw

attention to the significant details that contribute to the overall excellence of architectural projects.

This initiative began as an idea, sparked by a simple appreciation of some unique corners of projects. It slowly grew into a desire to provide a platform for architects to showcase their detailed work. The project was thoughtfully created by Sugbu Chapter President, Arch. Kirsten Jen Galeos, and developed with valuable contributions and refinements from Arch. Angelo Dakay and Arch. Janelle Moran. Their collaborative efforts have been instrumental in bringing the Sugbu Thumbnail Awards to life.

A total of 17 categories were released and UAP-Sugbu members were invited to submit photographs of their works that fit these categories. Members were encouraged to submit multiple entries, as long as these

adhered to the specified categories. The winning works were prominently featured on the official Sugbu social media pages and exhibited at Qube Gallery in Cebu City on May 10 and 11, 2024. During this intimate gathering, Arch. Steffi Go-Negapatan and Arch. Miljo Negapatan of SGMN Architects, Arch. Keshia Lim of San Studio, and Arch. Joel Ong of Urbanshift Studio shared insights into their winning projects.

The Thumbnail Awards highlight the exceptional work of Sugbu architects and empower them by celebrating their achievements, regardless of the project’s scope. The endeavor is proof that no matter how small, architects make a huge impact through their work. The Chapter looks forward to continuing this tradition and further inspiring the community of talented Sugbu Architects.

Bahandi Architects Support ALS Innovation

With its capacity to impact communities, UAP Iloilo Bahandi has been consistent in upholding its commitment to nation building, preciously touching people’s lives in an instant for the past four years through its flagship CSR project, “Haplos Bahandi.” In the Ilonggo vernacular, “Haplos Bahandi” literally and figuratively means preciously making an impact using the power of the hands and its capacity to mold, hone, develop, as well as to provide support, comfort, and compassion.

Under the leadership of Archi-Teacher and Chapter President Carlo John Debaja, UAP Iloilo Bahandi Chapter has reached out to the academe through its project, “Haplos ALS,” which

aims to supplement and support the academic pursuits of the out-of-school learners who embrace a second chance of finishing their studies. The innovation provides learners an alternative financial source as lack of funds is the prime reason of student absenteeism. It was launched on March 4, 2024 with the holding of the kickoff activity, “Haplos ALS: Upcycling Art Workshop,” at Dingle National High School in Dingle, Iloilo.

Chapter Vice President for Programs and Development Marites Dajay, Chapter Treasurer Ludy Ann Gumban, and incoming Chapter President Ian Peter Lama, took turns to discuss topics on ecological solid waste, upcycling of recyclable

materials, and the basic theory on design and crafts. The ALS students were able to produce personalized key chains from wood, soda lids and felt, as well as decorative items out of soda bottles.

This innovation, with Architect Debaja, Teacher II and Mrs. Lourne Laolao, Teacher II and ALS Coordinator as proponents, is envisioned for long term and sustainable implementation. The art workshop will be done every semester with every wave different from each other to enable learners to receive a variety of techniques and knowledge. The gist of the innovation -- touching the lives of Alternative Learning System (ALS) learners by providing them a venue for their skills development -- is definitely precious and truly bahandi.

Induction of District D1b Officers

The creation of District D1b is a milestone event for the architects of Southern Mindanao.

The newly-created Interim District D1b had its first induction of officers on March 1, 2024 at Cinco Niñas in Koronadal City. Area D Vice President Jaime Gonzaga inducted the officers into office, which are composed of past Area D Vice President Marlo Basco as District Director, South Cotabato Koronadal Chapter President Jopert Lewis James Subaldo as Deputy District Director, Socsksargen Chapter President Jane Marie Oponda as Secretary; and Cotabato Chapter President Jose De Guzman as treasurer.

District D1 Director Jasper Resari was on hand to lead in the charging of officers. Special guest of the occasion was Arch. Michael Ang, past UAP

National Executive Vice President and currently chair of the COF Jury of Fellows, who gave an inspirational message.

The creation of Interim District D1b was approved by the UAP National Board of Directors as a new district in Area D during Fourth National Board of Directors (NBD) Meeting held on December 16, 2024 at the UAP Headquarters in Quezon City. The UAP NBD’s approval came after UAP District D1 Council signed a resolution during the Area D Assembly held in Puerto Princesa City calling for the formation of a new district in Southern Mindanao to be composed of Socsksargen, South Cotabato Koronadal, and Cotabato Chapters

Initiated by District Director Resari, the move to create the new district was proposed after consultations with Area Vice President Gonzaga and the other members National Board of Directors. Architects belonging to chapters in Southern Mindanao believe that the region deserves a rightful representation in the NBD due to their unique collective situation wherein their location gives them distinct travel time and work-related limitations. Hence, Execom Resolution 26, S.2023-2024 was passed, approving the creation of District Council D1b for Area D under interim function until the UAP By-Laws are officially amended and consequently approved by the concerned government agencies.

UAP Cotabato Goes on Arkitour: A Post-Convention Activity

Still on a post-convention high, members of the Cotabato Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines, headed by Chapter President Jose De Guzman, embarked on an architectural tour on April 21, 2024 just right after the 49th UAP National Convention to see and appreciate some of the famous and notable landmarks and buildings around Metro Manila.

Organized by past Area D Vice President and past UAP Cotabato Chapter President Marlo Basco, the whole day tour brought the architects, together with their friends and families, to various scenic spots and tourist attractions in Lawton and Intramuros in Manila and Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.

First stop was the Pasig River Esplanade. This is a functional redevelopment project of the Inter-Agency Council for the Pasig River Urban Development (IAC-PRUD) located behind the Manila Central Post Office launched in January this year. Then the sightseers were transported back to the Spanish Colonial Era when they went to the historic walled area of Intramuros. They visited the two beautiful churches in the vicinity: the San Agustin Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the 16th-century neo-Romanesque Manila Cathedral, the prime basilica of the Philippines. At Fort Santiago, they marveled at the significance of this defense fortress in the history of our country. The morning ended with a hearty meal at Casa Manila.

In the afternoon, the architects were able to experience the modern ambience of the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City. Visiting the popular establishments like the Venice Canal Mall, SM

New Mindanaoan Architects Take Oath

Atotal of seventy-three new architects from Mindanao become the latest batch of registered and licensed architects of the country after taking their oath before the Hon. Robert S. Sac, Chairperson of the Professional Regulatory Board of Architecture during the “Hiraya 2024: Regional Oathtaking Ceremonies of New Architects,” held at the Arcadia Event Center in Davao City on April 5, 2024 .

Together with Chairperson Sac, who was also the guest speaker of the occasion, was Hon. Corazon Tandoc, Member of the Professional Regulatory Board of Architecture (PRBoA), who led the charging of the new architects. Dir. Raquel Abrantes, Regional Director of the

Professional Regulation Commission Regional Office XI (PRC-ROXI) also graced the event and delivered an inspiring message to the oath takers.

Following the oathtaking rites, the new architects were inducted as members of the United Architects of the Philippines by past UAP National President Benjamin Panganiban. He was assisted by UAP Area D Vice President Jaime Gonzaga and UAP District D1 Director Jasper Resari.

The Hiraya 2024 was spearheaded by UAP Kadayawan Dabaw Chapter, led by its Chapter President Brian Alric Panganiban. I t

was also attended by chapter presidents of other chapters of UAP District D1, deans and heads of architecture schools in Davao City, officers and members of UAP Kadayawan Dabaw, and loved ones of the new architects.

Since 2013, UAP Kadayawan Dabaw has held the regional oathtaking of new architects in Davao City, in partnership and coordination with PRC-ROXI and the PRBoA. This localized oathtaking is definitely a great convenience for new Mindanaoan architects. They do not have to travel all the way to Manila to participate in the mass oath taking of new architects being conducted by the Professional Regulation Commission at the PICC. Besides, it saves them much time, effort, and money.

Ascending the Ancient: UAP Singapore Chapter’s Heritage Tour

From May 10th to 12th, 2024, the UAP Singapore Chapter (UAPSG) collaborated with the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI) in Yogyakarta for an enriching heritage tour, titled “Ascending the Ancient: The Prambanan and Borobudur Temples.”

The journey began on May 10 as members of UAPSG landed at Yogyakarta International Airport. Their first stop was Masjid Gedhe Mataram Kotagede, a magnificent monument from the Mataram Sultanate era, built in 1575.

Later that evening, Arch. Lucia Dina Rosaria from IAI hosted a dinner at Warung Bu Ageng. The gathering was a warm and welcoming affair and was attended

by officers of IAI. The delicious Indonesian meal and engaging conversations helped everyone connect, break down barriers, and build new friendships.

Arriving at Borobudur Temple on May 11, the participants were joined by Arch. Yohanes Satyayoga Raniasta, Arch. Sofia Ulfah, and Arch. Lucia Dina Rosaria from IAI. Guest speaker Ir Hanif Budiman, an architect and professor at Universitas Islam Indonesia, delivered an insightful talk titled “Borobudur: Experiencing the Architectural Spaces.”

Exploring Borobudur—the world’s largest Buddhist temple—was a profound experience. The group delved into the temple’s history, marveling at the detailed carvings and iconic bell-shaped stupas that symbolize Javanese culture. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1991, Borobudur remains a vital part of Indonesia’s historical and cultural heritage.

In the afternoon, the group visited Prambanan Temple. They were joined by Arch. John Marvin de Jose, a dedicated chapter member and Committee Head, who presented a talk on “Exploring Prambanan Temple – A Standing Proof of Past Religious Peaceful Cohabitation.”

Prambanan, a 9th-century Hindu temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and the second largest in Southeast Asia. The complex includes 16 temples, with the main three dedicated to Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu, showcasing the grandeur of ancient Javanese Hindu art and architecture.

As the tours concluded, participants reflected on the enriching experiences and insights gained. These journeys offered more than just new locales—they broadened perspectives, fostered cultural appreciation, and contributed to personal growth.

The program was led by UAPSG’s Committee Head for Heritage and Conservation, Arch. Fernando Odulio.

UAP HK Revived, Sends Delegates to NATCON 49

Not wanting to miss out on the largest gathering of Filipino architects in history, eight members of UAP Hong Kong came to Manila to attend as official delegates to the 2024 UAP National Convention held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on April 18 to 21, 2024.

This was the first time that the chapter has participated in this annual assembly of UAP members since its chartering. UAP Hong Kong was chartered in 1995 by Abelardo Tolentino, Jr. during the administration of then UAP National President Nestor Mangio. However, after the successive terms of three chapter presidents, the chapter faced challenges and became dormant.

Since then, several individuals attempted to revive the chapter. But it was only in 2023 that the plan came to fruition when Sonny Lopez led the revival

of the Hong Kong Chapter through a joint effort, involving a few original chapter members, Filipino architects practicing in Hong Kong, and former Kuala Lumpur chapter members. The UAP’s Balik Arkitektura Program and the support from Architects Dante Aguirre and Rex Chua Tak made this renewal possible.

On November 4, 2023, UAP National President Richard Garcia inducted the HK chapter at the Marco Polo Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. Present at this historic moment were the Consulate General of the Philippines Raly Tejada and the Vice-Consul Jose Angelo Miguel, along with UAP Area A Vice President Hernando Advento and Secretary General Vanessa Lagman Ledesma.

A flurry of activities has marked the chapter’s revitalization. First, Julia de Borja’s logo design triumphed in the logo design competition, setting a

fresh visual identity for the chapter. Second, two meetings were conducted. The inaugural meeting welcomed new members and ended with a festive Christmas afterparty. The second meeting took place at the newly established UAP HK headquarters at 1 Lei Muk Road, Shek Lei, and would serve as the cornerstone for future endeavors.

Highlighting the growing prominence of the chapter, the gracious visit of the District A3 Chapter presidents to HK in February 2024 was significant. During this visit, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects awarded ARCASIA Chairperson Yolanda Reyes as its first Asian woman honorary fellow. And just recently, the attendance of delegates representing the chapter to NATCON 49 is a validation that UAP Hong Kong is now dynamic and very much alive.
