Message from the Area B Vice President

In line and in support with the thrust of our UAP National President Donato Magcale, “One Strong UAP!” we created the theme “Area B is One!” with the slogan: “To be strong is to be One, and to be one is to be United.”

We all believe that we cannot have strength if there is no unity. And so, we organized and facilitated a series of events that would entice everyone to come, to join, and participate with the objective of re-connecting, meeting new friends, promoting camaraderie and good fellowship, and ultimately forging unity.

We had a good run in “Area B is One in Sports!” especially in basketball, badminton, pickleball, bowling, and billiards by starting the games from District level to Area level. We had fun in “Area B is One in Arts!” particularly in the photography contest and much more in the Live Nude Sketching. We enjoyed the “Area B is One in Music!” with the battle of the bands and vocal solo singing contest during the culmination night called “Beyond!” This was also when we had a kick-off party for the 50th Anniversary of the UAP, dubbed as “Rock & Gold!” where we also unveiled the UAP Golden Logo and was installed at the mezzanine of the UAP Headquarters as a gift from Area B.

As your Area B Vice President, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our friends in the industry, our sponsors. A special shout-out to Boysen Paints, who made this event and all endeavors of UAP Area B truly exceptional and who has been the backbone of our success from day one up to the Culmination Night & UAP 50th Anniversary Kick-Off Party. You empowered us to achieve our goals and deliver meaningful events. May our good partnership continue to thrive, provide service, and inclusivity in the future.

To all our UAP Area B members, thank you for your unwavering support, participation, and commitment. Your efforts and enthusiasm have brought life and energy to every activity, making this a memorable and successful year for Area B. This a testament that truly Area B IS ONE!

Message from the Area D Vice President

The United Architects of the Philippines has been the light along the path to all Filipino architects, both young and experienced. It is the beacon that guides us all in the right direction, and it is even more a refuge and home whenever we are threatened by our adversaries. This is the home of Filipino Architects.

The past leaders of UAP continue to push forth and keep it on its rails, while the current leaders have elevated our organization to new heights and dimensions to face the different level of circumstances that undermines our practice and growth. We evolved into a dynamic profession and professionals that will not only adapt but reshape to stand the test of time.

It is a great honor and pride to serve the organization and be part of a band of leaders that propels it today. To the esteemed ladies and gentlemen whose commitment is unwavering and in which the value of volunteerism never fades my heartfelt gratitude. To all the members of UAP whose passion for excellence and highest professionalism, my snappy salute. Message from the Area C Vice President

UAP Area C, which constitutes the architects in the Visayas regions, has four districts (C1, C2, C3, and C4). There are 11 chapters in C1, 6 in C2, 6 in C3 and 10 in C4, a total of 33 chapters in Area C. Unlike the other UAP Areas wherein most of their districts can be traveled by land, in Area C, each of the districts is situated in a separate Island and can only be traversed by sea or by air and with limited time options. Each island has its own uniqueness, its own dialect or native tongue and its own culture. But when it comes to architectural practice, we all speak the same language in the UAP.

During the induction season, as the Vice President for Area C, I made sure to physically attend all induction events, whether district or chapter. For me that was the best way to meet and greet many of my constituents in just one setting. It gave them a chance to get to know me and for me to get to know them early on, especially before any big event takes place, like the NCA and NATCON. That way I was able to establish a continuous communication with them through group chat or private messaging. It was indeed a wonderful experience to share my thoughts and ideas, being able to clarify things to them, and to learn some concerns and issues relevant to our profession from their end.

After the inductions, next came NCA Davao last October 17-18, 2024. This was the first UAP event in the fiscal year which gathered all architects from different areas together. Break-out sessions per Area were conducted in a townhall meeting set up wherein all districts got to report all their programs and activities during the first 100 days in office. UAP National President Donato Magcale was able to talk to his constituents in every Area.

I call on all architects of Area C to continue to participate in all UAP events as well. Your active participation in UAP activities and support to its various programs are the reason why the UAP has remained dynamic and relevant all these years.

Mabuhay ang UAP! Mabuhay ang Arkitektong Pilipino!

Message from the Secretary General

To all members of the United Architects of the Philippines, “Going Strong” is more than a theme. It is a commitment to resilience and excellence of our organization.

As leaders, you have invested your time, talents, and resources to champion our vision, frequently behind the scenes. Our UAP has ventured into new settings and greater achievements. To all the UAP members, we are encapsulating not only the measurable milestones but also the qualitative essence of our pursuits, thereby embodying the aspirations for our profession, professional product, professionals, and professional organization.

Let us remain committed to global competence and excellence, embracing every opportunity to elevate our beloved profession to remain relevant and progressive.

Continue on as the link among architects bringing in positive thoughts and to be of service to our beloved organization. As we enter the new fiscal year, the tolls that you endured and the efforts that you exerted in the past years are now yielding fruits. This is the moment of stepping forward, to push through and soar higher.

And I congratulate each and every one of you who became part of this continued mission, to serve voluntarily at its highest possibilities.

May we find strength as we head on towards fullness of life for our next generations to come. We will always be One Strong UAP!

The UAP Inaugural 2024: Architects Moving Forward

The UAP Inaugural 2024, with the theme “Architects Moving Forward and Onward to a Future PROGRESSIVE – One Strong UAP,” was a conglomeration of events starting on June 15, 2024 at the UAP National Head Quarters with the Pre-Planning & Corporate Sessions for the FY 2024-2025. This was participated in by incoming EXECOM members and standing committee chairs. The National Board of Directors Meeting followed on June 21, 2024, which was held at the Café Rizal Park Hotel. The event was attended by the out-going and in-coming members of the UAP National Board of Directors and Executive Directors.

The Incoming Chapter Presidents’ Orientation Course FY 2024-2025 and the UAP Inaugural 2024 were held at Gallo Events Hall, Aseana, Pasay City on June 22, 2024. The Inaugural, though, was the highlight of all the events, marking the official assumption into office of all incoming UAP National Board of Directors members, Executive Directors, COF Officers and Jury, Committee Chairpersons, and all Chapter Presidents as well.

The welcome remarks was made by the incoming UAP National Executive Vice President Annie Pugeda. It was witnessed and participated in by a large number of architects here and abroad. Arch. Donato Magcale, the 30th UAP National President, in his inaugural speech, acknowledged the significant accomplishments for the UAP by the outgoing UAP National President Richard Garcia. On that note, Arch. Magcale will pursue the future-proofing of our national organization towards growth as we move forward and onwards to a more progressive future for the UAP.

Arch. Magcale underscored in his speech that, “We are not only leaders but we are actually Servant Leaders. We are the right people to do the job and get the job done. We are the first and the one and only Integrated Accredited Professional Organization for Architects (IAPOA) – which is the UAP.”

According to the incoming UAP National President, the new UAP corporate theme for FY 2024 – 2025, “FuturePROGRESSIVE - One STRONG UAP,” revealed a dynamic milestone on every architect’s career. He emphasized the organization’s corporate objectives by driving new strategies while improving existing strategies and processes.

The UAP Inaugural 2024 was graced by the presence of former Senator Richard Gordon. Sen. Gordon was impressed with the architects’ oath and gave his single thought of –“what UAP intends to be in terms of creativity of Philippine architecture.” He added

that “Filipino architects should become a very strong exemplar of how creative we all must be.” Corresponding to what Arch. Magcale pitched regarding leaders, Sen. Gordon elaborated on the leaders’ role wherein, “leadership is not merely a position but leadership requires action as well. It is bringing out the best on each member under one’s jurisdiction.”

Arch. Magcale, in his closing speech, focused attention on and encouraged all architects to be servant leaders to the UAP. Not only as master builders but also to become nation builders and to have the desire to create an architecture that truly matters.

Taking everything into account, the UAP Inaugural 2024 was a success amplified!

5 UAP Fellows Honored in Balik Tanaw 2024

One of the highlights of the celebration of World Architecture Day is the Balik Tanaw of the UAP College of Fellows (COF). This year’s much anticipated event shone the spotlight on five illustrious members of the COF, whose presence and professional excellence continue to inspire many of their colleagues.

This year’s honorees include Past COF Chancellor Norma Alarcon, Past COF Chancellor and UAP National President Ramon Mendoza, Wilson Sioco, Christopher Stonewall Espina, and the recently conferred Likha Awardee, Jose Mari Canizares. They were given tributes inside the Sergio Osmena Function Hall of the National Museum, after the COF general membership meeting held on October 5, 2024. The program, which gathered COF members and family members of the honorees, was headed by COF Chancellor Catherine Carunungan.

Since 2006, the UAP COF has been holding this tribute event to illustrious COF members, who continue to stamp their marks in their respective fields of expertise. Through the efforts of Past UAP COF Chancellor Maria Elena Cayanan, the event became a relevant part of the World Architecture Day celebration every October up until the present. The event is a fitting reminder to architects in looking back at the valuable contributions of our predecessors, not resting on one’s laurels and continue to promote the profession and serve the organization.

Ed Padilla: The Game Changer

Edison Ching Mañozo Padilla has the distinct honor of being chosen as the 2024 PRC’s Outstanding Professional of the Year in the field of Architecture. Strangely, Ed never wanted to be an architect. He wanted to pursue a career in pure visual arts. But there is such thing as destiny and life detours. These would manifest several times as the years peeled off.

First, there was his conservative father who wanted him to be a businessman or an engineer. He understood and loved his son who has exhibited leadership qualities and astuteness. As a compromise, he convinced him to take up architecture instead. You can practice your art in science, the elder said. As a dutiful child, he did.

Ed went to the University of Santo Tomas – College of Architecture and Fine Arts, the school of his choice. In the first years, perhaps because his heart was not into it, he was having challenges. Because he was disinterested, he had to repeat the subject Building Technology 5, which later became his master area in a supreme irony. But because he has the strength of character of completing any task at hand and turning hurdles into opportunities, he completed BS Architecture degree in 2002. He passed the board for architects the following year with flying colors. His professional practice mostly ventured into construction and fit-out works - building homes, resort hotels and residential and commercial condo interiors.

Ed also surreptitiously went into cartooning, a childhood dream. He paid tribute to his father by creating the comic strip “Ang Tindahan ni Mang Ed” with his dad as main character. This first appeared in Kabayan newspaper in 1999, and in the Manila Times in 2017. He then came out with a book – a comic strip compilation “Ang Tindahan ni Mang Ed - Book 1” to satisfy his avocation. By then, with a diploma and a list of career accomplishments under the young architect’s belt, the elder Ed was not complaining.

Then Ed’s story took an unexpected but significant turn in September 2013, when the local government of Valenzuela called and asked him if he would be interested to be the City Building Official of the City. He was incredulous. It turned out that Mayor Rex Gatchalian of the city was asking around for names to fill the position and the word got to Ed’s professors in UST who, impressed by their former student’s achievements, strongly recommended him to the city’s local chief executive. Upon interview, Mayor Gatchalian and Arch. Padilla clicked on systemic solutions. The rest, so the cliché goes, is history.

The appointment became the touchstone of the transformative chapter not just in Ed’s career but in the realm of building regulation in the country. Ed, under the marching orders of Mayor Rex, despite palpable resistance from some affected quarters, introduced the country’s first automated (i.e. less human intervention) building and construction permits application system – the 3S Plus Electronic Terminal. This groundbreaking system revolutionized the building permitting process in Valenzuela City. It became transparent, efficient, and professional. This sent a buzz to other cities grappling with issues on building regulations and permits.

The 3S Plus Electronic Terminal was a game changer. Ed was bestowed accolades, including the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Plaque of Appreciation in 2014 and Plaque of Recognition in 2021. It banished a lot of headaches, if not anomalies that persistently plague the construction industry. His innovation set a benchmark for future developments and was instrumental in shaping policy guidelines highlighting the online governance and the creation of One Stop Shop for Construction Permits (OSCP) at the Office of the Building Official (OBO).

Ed’s leadership capabilities were further recognized when he was elected National President of the Philippine Association of Building Officials National, Inc. (PABO) – a significant achievement, considering that the organization is composed mostly of city/ municipal engineers. As the first architect to hold this esteemed position, Ed’s election initiated further understanding between architects and engineers, especially in resolving issues and in delineating accountabilities in the design and construction fields.

Ed is married to Avie, an educator and a loving wife. They have four children who

continue to excel in their studies, picking up after their parents.

Ed was also elected as president of Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas, an organization of Filipino cartoonist established in 1978 and has produced a National Artist for Visual Artist, Larry Alcala, one of the founders and SKP’s first president.

Ed seems to be everywhere. His influence is also felt in his role as the Vice-President of the Building Officials Organization of Metropolitan Manila, Inc. (BOOMM). His active involvement in crafting crucial laws, department orders, and memoranda, such as the Philippine Green Building Code, Revised IRR of the Fire Code of the Philippines and various Joint Memorandum Circulars (JMCs), attests to his commitment to advancing safety and efficiency in construction.

His active role in the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) as Committee Chair and past Chapter President of UAP Greenhills reflects his dedication to the architectural community and his relentless efforts to elevate the profession’s standards.

As he completed his tenure as the National President of PABO for fiscal year 20222024, Ed remains an influential figure in the field of architecture, demonstrating a blend of innovation, leadership, and dedication. By fate, his career has become a testament to the impact one individual can have on their profession and the lives of many. For those in the architectural field and beyond, Ed’s achievements offer a powerful reminder of what is possible with will, commitment and vision. No matter the challenges.

In celebrating Ed as the 2024 PRC’s Outstanding Professional of the Year, we honor not just his past accomplishments but also the clearer paths he continues in government service to shape for the architecture profession in the Philippines and beyond.

President Marcos Declares December as PAF-NAM

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially declared December as the Philippine Architecture Festival – National Architecture Month (PAF-NAM). This proclamation, made on October 28, 2024, marks a major evolution of the National Architecture Week, which was originally established in 1971 through Presidential Proclamation No. 934. Now extended into a month-long celebration, this expansion coincides with the 53rd year of Philippine architecture, underscoring its growing importance in shaping Filipino culture, fostering sustainable development, and driving urban innovation.

In his proclamation, President Marcos highlighted architecture’s vital role in nationbuilding. “Architecture is central to our national identity and to our nation-building efforts,” he emphasized. “The Philippine Architecture Festival provides an expansive platform for Filipinos to celebrate the art and science of architecture, promoting its importance in enhancing our quality of life, preserving heritage, and constructing resilient, sustainable communities.”

What began as a week-long observance has blossomed into a month-long festival, providing a more inclusive and dynamic platform for public participation. The expanded PAF-NAM will feature a wide variety of activities, including exhibitions, design competitions, workshops, heritage tours, parades, seminars, and a lot more. These events will cover a broad spectrum of topics, from sustainable design and urban planning to the preservation of architectural heritage.

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) has expressed great enthusiasm for this extended format through a Manifesto of Support. The organization highlights how the month-long celebration will foster deeper discussions on architecture’s role in addressing global challenges, such as climate change and urbanization while inspiring innovation for sustainable growth. With this expansion, PAF-NAM offers a more comprehensive exploration of architecture’s ability to tackle pressing issues while encouraging public appreciation of the profession.

In a strategic move to ensure PAF-NAM’s lasting impact, the UAP through its Commission on Governmental and External Affairs has institutionalized the celebration’s theme through 2030. All subevents, programs, and initiatives aligned with PAF-NAM will now be guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that the celebration contributes to global efforts in sustainable development, climate action, and resilient urbanization.

The expansion of PAF-NAM also positions the Philippines alongside leading countries that host internationally recognized architectural festivals. Known for its rich cultural heritage and emerging architectural talent, the Philippines is now playing a more prominent role in global architectural conversations. Through PAF-NAM, the country is reinforcing its commitment to advancing architectural practice on the world stage, showcasing Filipino creativity, and aligning with global trends in sustainable urban planning and design.

PAF-NAM’s core objectives include raising awareness of Philippine architecture, inspiring the next generation of architects, and fostering collaboration among architects, policymakers, and the public. The festival has received strong support from key government agencies, educational institutions, and other architectural organizations.

Strategic partnerships with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the UAP will enhance the festival, featuring a dynamic mix of interactive exhibits, architectural tours, and captivating events that celebrate the nation’s rich architectural heritage and showcase innovative design solutions.

UAP Conducts Relief Operations for Storm Kristine Victims

Severe Tropical Storm Kristine started its wrath on October 22, 2024 when massive rains poured over Southern Luzon. It hit the Bicol Region on the midnight of October 23rd and soon affected the Province of Batangas and some areas in Laguna. After almost 48 hours of non-stop rain, Kristine left Bicol and many parts of Batangas flooded, destroying millions worth of crops and property and leaving residents devastated and helpless.

On the wee hours of October 23rd, the UAP Relief Operations was initiated by no less than the UAP National President Don Magcale through the Renato S. Heray Bayanihang Arkitektura (RSHBA) and the Committee on General Welfare.of the UAP Commission of Internal Affair (CIA). Initially, the action was to respond to the Bicolano architects affected by the calamity. However, the massive destruction caused by the severe storm led the UAP to come together to help the families affected by Kristine.

On October 24th, the doors of UAP Headquarters were opened 24 hours to accept donations in kind and accounts were established to accept cash donations. UAP National Treasurer Mary Janessie Tumambing was appointed as chairperson to head the operations. Not having much experience with relief response herself, she delegated other committees and able National Officers were tapped to lead particular tasks.

Executive Director for Commission on Governmental and External Affairs (CGEA) Mary Kristine Segovia led the Relief Operations Center while RSHBA Co-Chairperson Paul Ong headed the donation drive in kind and recruited volunteers for repacking. UAP CIA Director Alfred Carandang, through Chairperson for General Welfare Jojo Golpeo, made sure the long list of affected architects were addressed to receive the Member Welfare Fund. Executive Director for Creatives Maribel Collado through Chairperson for Multimedia Ronald Buenaflor, made sure that all communications via social media platforms were made availbale on time for awareness of the donation drive.

The UAP District Directors from different Areas, with their UAP chapters, flocked to the UAP Headquarters and happily joined the repacking efforts. On October 26 to 29, the spirit of UAP bayanihan lived on. Everyone worked happily like Santa’s little elves, generously sharing their time and resources with a common mission - to give back to the community. More than these, cash donations poured from everywhere from different UAP chapters. The storm was strong but so was the PHP 811,032.38 total cash donations collected.

By the end of the donation drive and collaborative efforts of relief operations, the UAP was able to help 800 families in Bato, Camarines Sur (partnership with GMA Kapuso Foundation who found ways to transport the relief packs), 128 families in Talisay, Batangas (UAP Batangas Lakeshore Chapter), 128 families in Lemery, Batangas (UAP Batangas Chapter), 250 families in Tagbakin, Lipa City (UAP Lipa Chapter), and 556 families in Biñan, Laguna (UAP Laguna and San Pablo Chapters).

Additional help for families still living in evacuation centers and have not fully recovered from the devastation in Ligao City (500 packs) and Batangas (300 packs) were dispatched before Christmas through the combined efforts of Regional Districts B5 and B4, respectively. The effects of Kristine will remain gruelling and painful to those directly affected, but to the UAP community who took part in the outreach, the privilege of serving and helping others will forever be an unforgettable experience.

Going Strong

When the United Architects of the Philippines ushered in Fiscal Year 2024-2025 under the leadership of National President Donato Magcale, the organization adopted the corporate theme: “FuturePROGRESSIVE - One STRONG UAP.”

This statement exemplifies the resiliency and strength of the UAP as it steers its path in fulfilling its commitment to serve the Filipino architects and the architectural profession. True to its theme, our organization has demonstrated its unique strengths, passion for excellence, and selfless service towards improvement and growth.

Just one month into the fiscal year, this was validated during the 2024 PRC Awards Night held on August 2, 2024 when the United Architects of the Philippines was awarded by the Professional Regulation Commission with two prestigious awards. These are the Outstanding Accredited Professional Organization (OAPO) and the Seal of Excellence in Continuing Partnership Award (SECPA).

With these recognitions, the UAP becomes the first and only accredited professional organization (APO) to win the OAPO twelve times and the first of the two recipients of the SECPA among professional organizations to be conferred by the country’s professional regulatory body.

Winning the OAPO award is no mean feat. As the highest accolade given by the PRC, this is presented annually to give recognition to APOs for their notable contributions, achievements, and dedicated service and commitment to their respective professions. To win this award is already difficult enough but winning it a dozen times is somewhat incredible. Yet, with the strength and commitment to professional excellence of the UAP everything is possible.

And as the organization gears up to celebrate its fiftieth year of existence, it is fitting that we reflect the accomplishments and successes that the UAP has reaped through the years. Indeed, as our beloved UAP celebrates its golden jubilee, we can clearly declare that the United Architects of the Philippines is going strong as ever.

PAG-HABI: Weaving the Threads of Ethics and Professionalism into the Fabric of Architectural Practice

The Bataan Peninsulares Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines conducted a CPD seminar series, titled “PAG-HABI: Weaving the Threads of Ethics and Professionalism into the Fabric of Architectural Practice,” on June 8, 2024 at the BPSU Auditorium, Bataan Peninsula State University (Main Campus) in Balanga City, Bataan. The event aimed to elevate the standards of architecture and inspire a new generation of practitioners committed to excellence, fairness, and the common good.

PAG-HABI started with Chapter President Roxanne Cadiz delivering the opening message to formally kick off the event. The first speakers were certified public accountants from the Bureau of Internal Revenue - Revenue District Office No. 20 - Balanga, Bataan, Ms. Melinda Cruz and Ms. Jan Clarize Gutierrez. They discussed “Taxation for Architects,” which helped architects reduce tax liabilities, manage their tax obligations, and improve their understanding of taxes.

The second speaker was Architect Robert Sac, Chair of the Professional Regulatory Board of Architecture. He spoke on the standard contract documents for design-build services, focusing on the critical components of the standard contract for architects. Executive Director of the UAP Commission on Professional Practice Cecile CaymanGamana was the third speaker. She presented “Design-Build Services by Administration: Guide to Startup Architects,” which delved into the methodology and techniques used for design-build services by administration, from concept to construction implementation and completion with maximum efficiency.

The fourth and last speaker is the current UAP National Treasurer Mary Janessie Tumambing. Her talk on “An Architectural Small Private Practice Discourse” discussed how to start a practice, branding, and the business elements of architecture. During the open forum, facilitated by UAP Bataan Peninsulares members Christian Jeru De Guzman and Marie Carunungan, the presenters graciously answered multiple questions from the audience. Indeed, the day was full of learning and opportunities for all the participants.

Tabi-tabi, Halo-halo, Sama-sama: A Compedium of WAD Activities

The World Architecture Day celebration of UAP Diliman Chapter consisted of a number of activities that aimed to empower both young and seasoned architects to embrace participatory urban design practices. Two CPD seminars were organized: one designed for architects interested in understanding the roles of architects for livable, equitable and smart cities; and another aimed at architects who want to start their own design and build firms. But the heart of the WAD celebration focused on inspiring children to experience the same participatory urban design activities by doing an art+talk workshop with architects, landscape architects and artists. Finally, the celebration rounded off with a community cleanup that got together different stakeholders to work not only to clean up Parian Creek, but also learn about the past of Barangay Pinagbuhatan and reimagine its future.

On October 7, 2024, the chapter partnered with Barangay Pinagbuhatan to conduct the TALK+ART Workshop on Sustainable Cities, Biodiversity and Placemaking. The participants were fifty Grade 6 students from Pinagbuhatan Elementary School, Barangay Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City. The objective was to use informative talks and art prompts on biodiversity, sustainable cities and placemaking to orient the young students on the importance of participating in the urban design landscape. The art prompts were led by Arch. Popi Laudico and were interspersed with talks about biodiversity by Biologist RJ Pescador and placemaking by Arch. EnP. Sali Kintanar and Arch. RMP Napoleon Ibañez Jr. This new innovative way of teaching and learning allowed the students to individually reflect more about themselves, their families, and their community.

The second half was a visioning activity conducted by esteemed muralist Kuya A.G. Saño. He gathered the children around to take them through a journey of envisioning the future of Parian Creek, the very same creek right outside their school gates. Now working collaboratively with each table of 6 to 8 kids, it aimed to create a slogan and image to define their creek of the future. These two distinct activities not only introduced participatory urban design practices to 11-12 year old kids, but also redefined to them the role and meaning of architects in society. By the end of the WAD event, there were 50 new individuals dreaming and proclaiming to become architects in the future!

The Luntiang Marikina Program

The “Luntiang Marikina Program” is a community-driven initiative that has been making a significant impact in Marikina City, by organizing monthly river cleanup activities along the Marikina River. This program, which began as a response to the growing concern about environmental degradation, aims to engage local residents, schools, businesses, and organizations in the preservation of the river and its surrounding areas.

Each month, volunteers from various sectors, UAP Marikina Valley included, come together to participate in the clean-up, working side by side to remove waste and debris from the riverbanks. The event serves not only as a practical effort to restore the river’s cleanliness but also as a platform to raise awareness about environmental protection. By involving the community, the program helps instill a sense of responsibility and pride in taking care of the local environment.

The clean-up activities are complemented by educational sessions, where participants learn about the importance of waste segregation, the impact of pollution on ecosystems, and sustainable practices that can help keep the river pristine. Local organizations, government units, and even schools actively participate, making the Luntiang Marikina Program a collaborative effort that extends beyond just cleaning—it becomes a collective movement for environmental conservation.

As the program grows, its impact ripples across Marikina City and beyond. Through consistent efforts, the program has helped reduce the amount of waste in the river, improved public awareness, and fostered a spirit of volunteerism. With each successful clean-up, the Luntiang Marikina Program continues to inspire positive change, reminding everyone that a cleaner, healthier environment starts with collective action and care for nature.

As part of the “Pagmamalasakit Program” of UAP Area A, different chapters from the Area took part in the cleanup activity held on November 16, 2024. Spearheaded by Jahn Alejaga of La Liga Mariquina, Inc., this effort was a collaborative initiative involving the following chapters: Marikina Valley, Pasig, Pasig-Kapitolyo, San Juan-Pinaglabanan, San Juan-Mandaluyong, Greenhills, Rizal East, Rizal Nuevo, and Bagumbayan, alongside District A5 Director Rex Chua Tak. Additional support came from Marikina BFP, BJMP, Ateneo Law School, Paranaque Flying School, and student volunteers from Marikina.

During the event, Chapter President Carlo Domingo formally took over the reins of the chapter from outgoing Chapter President Bernadette Bugayong. In his inaugural speech, Architect Domingo highlighted the importance of perseverance and commitment in one’s endeavors. Likewise, he elaborated the chapter’s plans and objectives for the coming months for his term. Nineteen new members of the chapter were later introduced by Chapter Secretary Arnie Valdez with Vice President for Programs and Development Margarita Angeles presiding over their induction.

The auspicious occasion was further celebrated when Charter President Voltaire Agbayani raised the ceremonial toast. Arch. Arsenio Dawang III, one of the charter advisers, gave a congratulatory speech and extended his welcome towards the new set of officers.

That evening, the chapter also launched the very first edition of its coffee table book entitled “AKDA: Ang Kasaysayan ng Dagitab nang Arkitekto.” The book, a dream project for its members, highlights the rich history of the chapter and its members. The hard work and dedication of its founding members paved way for the collection of stories found in the book.

Chartering of the UAP Muntinlupa Madrigal

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) welcomed a new chapter with the formal chartering of the Muntinlupa Madrigal Chapter. The event took place in the Main Ballroom of Vivere Hotel & Resorts in Filinvest City, Alabang, Muntinlupa, marking a significant milestone for the organization.

The inception of the Muntinlupa Madrigal Chapter stemmed from a contemplative “What if?” scenario, pondering the creation of a community of visionaries and advocates within the architectural field. This idea gained traction following a call to innovation by UAP Immediate Past National President Richard Garcia, during his address at the UAP Las Piñas Chapter Induction Ceremonies on September 12, 2023. His challenge to transcend conventional boundaries inspired the development of this new chapter.

Initially, the concept was just an idea, but it soon gained momentum with the formation of a core group. Four pioneering architects—Ma. Elena Christina Montemayor, Karla Marie Louise Lardizabal, Bianca Rissa Dinao-Tiongco, and Carlos Miguel Tiongco— began formalizing their vision for a chapter that would emphasize holistic integration of personal and professional growth. With aspirations to innovate and enjoy, they sought approval from their existing chapter to establish the new one.

Preparations for the new chapter began in October 2023, bolstered by interest from peers and colleagues. The group sought sponsorship from the UAP Ayala Triangle Chapter, guided by its Past President, Emmeline Co. On February 3, 2024, the founders, along with two additional charter members, presented their proposal to the UAP Ayala Triangle Chapter, which later agreed to serve as the mother chapter following internal deliberations.

All necessary requirements were fulfilled by April 2024, leading to official approval for the new chapter on June 22, 2024, during the final National Board of Directors Meeting for FY 2023-2024.

The chartering ceremony on August 9, 2024, was attended by notable figures, including National President Donato Magcale, Area B Vice-President Mark Louis Soriquez, and B3 District Director Carla Malabed. Also present were Executive Director of the Committee on Internal Affairs, Alfred Geoffrey Carandang, Chairman of the Committee on Chapter Formation, Conrado Kison, and Chairman of the Committee on Membership, Liyo Cefre, among others. The guest speaker for the event was Immediate Past National President, Richard Garcia.

The ceremony was well-attended by the 21 charter members, five new inductees, District B3 Chapter Presidents, industry partners and other guests. The event concluded with a celebration featuring a festive meal marking a successful beginning for the Muntinlupa Madrigal Chapter.

Arkitektong Kabitenyo Holds “The Art Klass Project” for Children

On July 27, 2024, the UAP Cavite Chapter partnered with Pastorelle - Jesus Good Shepherd School, Inc. to conduct a community project titled “CSR 2.0: The Art Klass Project” for the children of Palico, Imus City, Cavite. The event, which took place at the Jesus Good Shepherd School in Bgy. Palico 2, aimed to bring art education and creativity to local children, offering them both a fun and educational experience.

The day began with a face painting activity spearheaded by the UAPSA Cavite State University Chapter, where the kids were excited to express their creativity on their faces before moving on to the main event. The partnership organized an art lecture and workshop, with 52 young participants engaging in hands-on activities designed to foster their artistic skills and expand their knowledge. Through the workshop, the children were encouraged to explore different artistic techniques, helping to develop both their creative expression and problem-solving abilities.

In addition to the art-focused activities, the event also included the distribution of muchneeded art and school supplies to the participants. The organizers also provided lunch kits and a feeding program was held to ensure that the children were well-nourished throughout the day. Fun games were also incorporated into the event, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere for all.

This community project highlights the UAP Cavite Chapter’s dedication to supporting local youth development and their ongoing commitment to community service. By providing both educational resources and a fun, creative environment, the event aimed to inspire the children of Palico to pursue their artistic passions while reinforcing the importance of education and creativity in their lives. The success of the event underscores the power of collaboration between local organizations and their ability to make a meaningful impact not only to the young ones but also to the community as a whole.

PhilASA and PalSU Collaboration Produces Theme Song

United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Palawan Chapter Past VP for Programs and Development, Architect Jefferson Bulan, in collaboration with the Architecture Department at Palawan State University (PalSU) and Philippine Architecture Schools Association (PhilASA), spearheaded a visionary extension project to promote sustainable tourism via architecture. In partnership with local government units (LGUs) and few sustainability stakeholders, this initiative was able to produce an official theme song and music video for PhilASA entitled “Build the Future” which highlights the famous tourist destinations of Puerto Princesa City and El Nido.

The leadership of Arch. Bulan, who is also a member of the Committee on Information Technology under the UAP Commission on Internal Affairs and PhilASA’s Regional Director for Southern Luzon, and with the support of PhilASA National President, Architect Jean Cornejo, led to the production of a theme song composed by PSU’s fourthyear architecture students and multi-award-winning local composer June Ocampo, and a music video directed by Jeferson Mejia. This groundbreaking collaboration showcases the role of architecture in fostering sustainable tourism while highlighting the unique ecological and cultural heritage of Palawan.

This endeavor, championed by Arch. Bulan, is essential to PhilASA’s larger goal of bolstering corporate membership and goes beyond simple promotion. Through his strategic vision, PhilASA hopes to establish a single voice in the field by enticing more architecture schools throughout the Philippines to join, which is essential for the continuous efforts to restructure the architectural curriculum. With a focus on regional contexts, sustainable practices, and cultural preservation, this reorganization seeks to bring educational standards into line with worldwide trends and level of competence.

The music video emphasizes the complementary relationship between environmental management and creative design by showcasing Puerto Princesa’s eco-conscious urban settings and El Nido’s breath-taking hospitality gems. This project, bridging professional practice and academia, serves as a call to action for academic institutions to collaborate in order to enhance the curriculum for aspiring architects, as well as a celebration of the role that architecture plays in sustainable tourism. The official launching of the song was held on November 6, 2024 during the inauguration of new facilities at PalSU, graced by the University President, Dr. Ramon Docto, together with the esteemed faculty members of the Architecture Department and UAP Palawan Chapter representatives.

The Tree Tribute: A Tree-Growing Yolanda Commemoration

“Tree-growing is the new tree-planting.” Guided by this principle, the UAP Metro Tacloban Chapter strengthens its green advocacy through “The Tree Tribute: A ProActive Tree-Growing Yolanda Commemoration.” This initiative aims to address the climate emergency through tangible urban and environmental interventions. The project envisions communities uniting to plant and nurture trees each November 8 to commemorate Super Typhoon Yolanda, under the banner of #OnNov8WeAllPlant.

What sets The Tree Tribute apart is its three-year stewardship plan. This ensures the survival and growth of the planted trees, supported by carefully managed sponsorship. More than a one-time event, the activity is intended to become an annual tradition, with UAP MTC and its architectural partners—UAPGA Eastern Visayas State University Chapter, UAPSA Samar State University Chapter, and UAP District C3—taking the lead in monitoring and sustaining the trees. The program is also designed to be adoptable by other organizations and institutions.

The project’s inaugural implementation on November 8, 2024 featured five simultaneous planting sites in Tacloban and Catbalogan Cities, namely: Tacloban City Hall Grounds,

World Vision Playground (Yolanda Memorial), San Roque Mountains, Mangrove Site in Diit, Tacloban City, and Mangrove Site in Pangdan, Catbalogan City

The success of the event was made possible through partnerships with the Tacloban City Government, Tacloban City Agriculturist’s Office, DENR, CENRO, PENRO, and TACRU, among others, and numerous private businesses also joined in. Over 360 volunteers participated, including the Tacloban Rescue Unit, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Philippine Air Force, Tacloban Airesofters Group, Guinhangdan Palo-Liberation Eagles Club, 8th Forward Service Support Unit (8FSSU) Army Support Command of the Philippine Army, Sangguniang Kabataan of Tigbao, Department of Agriculture Regional Office VIII, and UAP San Juanico Chapter.

By fostering collaboration and positioning architects as environmental leaders, The Tree Tribute addresses deforestation, mitigates climate risks, and nurtures social bonds. The oxygen trees provide reminds us of their critical role in sustaining all life. Planting together on a single date creates a more powerful and widespread impact.

UAP Buglas Sur at the DSWD’s Annual Adopt A Family Program

UAP Buglas Sur Chapter has teamed up with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) of Kabankalan City in the annual Adopt A Family program. The CSWDO Kabankalan, under the headship of Mrs. Cyril Ramos, has reached out to UAP Buglas Sur, through Chapter President Ranel Jamarolin, to join its collaborative program which involves other non-government organizations and civic groups and business owners within Kabankalan City.

The Adopt A Family Program has been a long standing focal program of the CSWDO and is thoroughly supported by partner agencies and stakeholders. It aims to offer financial or material support to the identified marginalized families in each of the barangays in Kabankalan City.

After paying a courtesy visit to the Office of the Punong Barangay, the chapter conducted an initial site visit to assess the needs of its adopted family identified by the CSDWO social workers. The Pajardo Family of Sitio Bagacay, Brgy. Inapoy was this year’s recipient of aid from the chapter and its industry partners. Among the needs identified during the initial inspection were the following: repair of the run-down section of the house; establishment of a comfort room; clothes and slippers for the whole family; hygiene and medicine kits; groceries; and solar lights.

A donation drive immediately followed after the initial inspection. This was supported by industry partners, who shared the same enthusiasm with chapter members in sending their sponsorship for the recipient family. Cash aids were also turned over to the chapter from various architectural design firms in the city.

On September 26,2024, members of the chapter drove to Barangay Inapoy to deliver their donation to the adopted family. Repairs were also done by the laborers from JLP Rivas Architects and Associates, out of the materials donated by MBJ Design Studios. After a week-long donation drive, the chapter successfully gathered a month’s worth of grocery items, toilet fixtures and fittings, construction materials, clothes, cash, and solar lights.

It has been an honor for the chapter to serve and extend its hands towards those in need, supporting its vision to uphold the profession not just through building structures, but through forging a strong and resilient community and fortified relationships with various organizations.

UAP Davao Designs Philippine Eagle Facility

The Philippine eagle is the pride of our country. Aside from being one of the largest and most attractive eagles in the world, it is also one of the most endangered birds. At the forefront in the effort to save the eagle is the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to save the Philippine eagle and its forest habitat. It runs the Philippine Eagle Center (PEC), a conservation and breeding facility in Davao City.

To support PEF’s noble efforts, the UAP Davao Chapter, through its past chapter president, Arch. Sheanna Bacus, offered free design services to the foundation in the renovation of the Philippine Eagle Center building. Part of the project is the Geothermica’s Gateway: Visitor Orientation and Education Area. This involves the construction of the lobby and multi-purpose hall, which will transform the PEC entrance into a more inviting and stimulating environment for visitors and at the same time serve as a venue for seminars and training sessions for various institutions.

To mark the start of construction of the gateway, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 17, 2024. Present during the event were Architect Bacus, UAP Davao Chapter President Daem Mark Panizales, PEF Executive Director Dennis Salvador, DENR-XI Regional Director Ma. Mercedes Dumagan, renowned Mindanao artist and sculptor Kublai Millan, and Mandai Wildlife Reserve Group CEO Mike Barclay.

This section of the PEC is dedicated to the memory of Geothermica, a Philippine eagle sent to Bird Paradise in Singapore in 2019 as part of a species loan program aimed at promoting conservation and breeding. Geothermica served as a species ambassador, which helped to raise awareness about the plight of the Philippine eagle. Sadly, Geothermica succumbed to a severe lung infection in September 2023. He is now a symbol of international conservation efforts.

The day began bright and early at 4:30 AM with a high-energy Zumba warm-up session, led by lively instructors who got everyone moving and grooving. The races began promptly at 5:00 AM, with the 10K category leading the charge followed by the 5K category by the 3K category five and ten minutes later, respectively. One of the most fun aspect of the event though was the amazing costumes donned by some of the runners, showcasing their creativity with spooky, funny, and whimsical

costumes. From witches to superheroes and ghosts, the course became a parade of Halloween spirit.

Not to be outdone, pets were also part of the fun, with many four-legged participants dressed in adorable costumes. From dogs dressed as villains to cats in capes, these furry friends added an extra layer of charm and delight to the event. The UAP Halloween Run was truly a family-friendly event, where both humans and pets could celebrate together.

After crossing the finish line, runners and walkers gathered to celebrate their achievements at the post-race party. From the top finishers in each category to the winners of the Best Costume competition, everyone was celebrated.

In addition to celebrating fitness and fun, the UAP Halloween Run 2024 also supported Boystown, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting those in need. The event not only promoted healthy living but also made a meaningful impact on the community, bringing people together to support a worthy cause.

UAP North Davao Anniversary Sportsfest

In celebration of its 18th founding anniversary as a chapter, the North Davao Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines, headed by Chapter President Tee Jay Ian Garcia, organized a series of activities to celebrate this significant occasion. Among these is the staging of the annual UAP North Davao Chapter Sportsfest on October 12, 2024. The activity was participated by more than 50 chapter members.

To jumpstart the celebration, a motorcade was held along the major thoroughfares of Tagum City, Davao del Norte. Starting at Wilcon Depot in Barangay Conocotan, the caravan of motor vehicles wound up at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex, the venue of the sports competition events.

Prior to the start of the competitions, participants were divided into two teams, namely: Team North Davao and Team PAAF/ARCXPO, in reference to the chapter’s two recent major events, the Philippine Architecture and Allied Arts Festival (PAAF) and the Architects’ Construction Expo (ARCXPO). Both teams competed with each other in the following sporting events: volleyball, chess, scrabble, table tennis, darts, men’s basketball, and women’s volleyball.

After a whole day of intense sports completion and exhausting physical activities, UAP North Davao members shed their sports apparel to change into their elegant black outfits for the UAP North Davao 18th Anniversary Gala Night Dinner. This was held at the DavNor Capitol Pavillon, where the winners of Chapter Sportfest were announced and awarded with medals and trophies.

UAP North Davao Chapter was chartered on October 7, 2016. However, October 7 this year fell on a Monday, hence Chapter Board of Directors decided to commemorate the occasion of October 12, which was a Saturday. This allowed most of the chapter members to participate in the anniversary event. The very successful chapter anniversary celebration was supported by Boysen Paints Philippines.
