Icommend the readers and my colleagues behind The UAP Post, led by Arch. Ericson Europa and his team, for remaining steadfast in delivering stories that continue shaping our organization toward welcoming the fifth decade of strengthening our profession.
As of this writing, I welcomed another year in my eventful life on a day that happens only once every four yearsFebruary 29. Being your 29th National President brought me many realizations about being an architect in more than the four corners of a structure through the numerous events, gatherings, and engagements I have attended. More than planning and designing, I believe a greater mission awaits every architect in its quest to add colors and angles to everyone’s lives.
The 52nd National Architecture Week (NAW) and the 2nd Philippine Architecture Festival (PAF) continue serving their purpose of reintroducing the significant role of architects to the public, thanks to the team behind the week-long festivities held in Baguio City last December 2023. From the City of Pines to everywhere else, the UAP chapters also held their localized celebrations of NAW-PAF through their creative way of engaging with the general public, which made our hearts full. Some architects and even architecture students lent their creative hands to make murals, some even created inclusive spaces for marginalized sectors, and some organized soup kitchens for the children. Coinciding with the holiday season, the NAW-PAF became a way of giving back to the people.
As we anticipate the forthcoming 49th UAP National Convention and the CONEX 2024, we are more than excited to prepare ourselves to welcome our Golden Jubilee by 2025 and unravel what the future holds for our profession, our beloved organization, and the architecture industry. As we rise to the challenges of the future, let us fuel ourselves with our burning desire to become better architects with the help
of workshops and seminars that will equip our profession to keep up with the times. Indeed, learning is a lifelong process that we must keep in our hearts as we humble ourselves to the new lessons we absorb and share with those who need it most - the architecture students and graduates who are the future of the Philippine architecture industry.
In the succeeding years, I wish the UAP to remain a stronghold of the best and brightest architects with a Filipino soulwhere the Bayanihan spirit lives.
I wish the readers of The UAP Post and its editorial team all the best! Every week, let’s make it a Happy National Architecture Week!
Saludo ako sa mga kapwa kong arkitekto! Mabuhay ang arkitektong Pilipino at ang UAP!
RICHARD M. GARCIA, FUAP, AA, PALA, PIEPThe eagerness of architects, graduates, and students to celebrate National Architecture Week (NAW) 2023 is a testament of how the Filipino architects unify, excel, and promote an awareness to certain causes like water conservation and preservation. The Philippines is an archipelago with over 7,000 islands, thus water is one of the primary resources that architects especially in the built environment industry should look into.
The City of Baguio, a pioneer city planned by American urban planner, Arch. Daniel Burnham, played host to the NAW 2023, a celebration that brought together architects, graduates, students, and enthusiasts from across the Philippines. From December 4 to 9, 2023, the city buzzed with excitement as participants engaged in a series of events aimed at exploring the theme, “Sigaw ng Alon: Soaring Beyond the Boundaries of Architecture.” The programs of NAW 2023 were aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing sustainable design practices, community engagement, and architectural solutions that contribute to the advancement of social, environmental, and economic objectives outlined by the United Nations. Thus, with the SDG, the activities were set to meet certain goals to have a more impactful celebration of the National Architecture Week.
The festivities kicked off with a lively pre-event on December 3rd, setting the tone for the week ahead. Delegates were warmly welcomed with a bonfire party replete with cultural immersion activities, providing a taste of Baguio’s rich heritage and culture. This affair was just the beginning of the social engagement among delegates, and also to condition them to the cold weather of Baguio. Another event held that day was the Chalk Art, which promoted cultural expression, community engagement, and partnerships. It was connected to the city’s programs in lessening vehicular traffic at Session Road. Right across was the installation of the NAW Timber Pavilion at the Post Office Park by 90 Design Studio led by past Baguio Chapter President Aris Go. According to Arch. Go, the architectural installation was strategically placed in the least frequented area of the park to encourage more visitors to explore the overlooked curved wheelchair ramp. The final pre-event activity was the Fun Run. Geared to promote good health and wellbeing, it encouraged delegates to engage in outdoor physical activities.
Taking place on December 4th, the official opening ceremonies included the inauguration of exhibits at various locations across the city. From the iconic Baguio
City Hall to busy SM Mall, and prestigious institutions like SLU, UB, UC, and Berkeley School, these exhibits showcased the diverse facades of architectural highlights which aimed to deliver a message of significance and awareness. Graced by esteemed figures such as Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Arch. Llyan Austria, and Coach Lyka Maravilla, the opening ceremonies ended with a two hour long cultural production featuring various folk dances of the Philippines.
This was followed by the main program, which was the highlight of the week, with three National Presidents of the UAP, UAPGA, and UAPSA leading the celebration. Various goverment officials, including the Vice President of the Philippines, Sara Duterte also gave inspirational message. The presence of representatives from the Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, and Environmental Planning professions underscored the significance of the event. In essence, the National Architecture Week’s programs resounded with the theme “Sigaw ng Alon,” to convey a message of timeless efforts to achieve sustainability.
December 5th offered valuable learning opportunities through seminars focused on Leadership Programs and Sustainability Initiatives. These sessions provided a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among participants, further enriching their experience. The Baguio Botanical Garden serves as sanctuary for fostering sustainable practices. Hosting a leadership program amidst the serene beauty of a botanical garden presented a unique opportunity to cultivate future leaders with a deep appreciation for nature and a commitment to sustainable development. The NAW Sustainability Programs have served as a powerful tool for promoting environmental conservation, social equity, and economic development by addressing key sustainability challenges and fostering collaboration, innovation, and community engagement.
The Balangkasan, held on December 6th, addressed the changing professional landscape in architecture, which requires a focus on enhancing the quality of education. The evolution of architecture programs in the Philippines to be globally competitive is critical for advancing Sustainable Development Goals related to education, innovation, sustainable cities, and partnerships for sustainable development. UAP Maharlika Chapter successfully pulled out an engaging discussion by high caliber reactors.
On December 7th, Day 4 was marked by intense creativity as participants engaged in the Design Competition. Qualifying delegates showcased their innovative ideas, pushing the boundaries of architectural design and research. This program not only fostered healthy competition but also encouraged an exploration within the realm of architectural advancement and innovation with the help of the panel of judges from various fields and expertise. Following the main criteria of integration of principles of sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation into their designs, the shortlisted entries were able to demonstrate the power to make a tangible impact, shaping a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future for generations to come.
Day 4 also featured the Architectural Documentary Film Festival, a project of the Sentro ng Arkitekturang Filipino. It provided a platform for storytelling and reflection on the role of architecture in society. The event was graced by National Artist for Film, Kidlat Tahimik, who gave the delegates the insights and wisdom on his movie creation, being both the director and the actor. The filmfest concluded with the Awards Night held at Gestdan Centrum, Baguio City.
The closing ceremony of the National Architecture Week 2023, held on December 9, 2023, was a culmination of inspiration, reflection, and celebration, marking the conclusion of a week-long journey dedicated to the exploration of architecture’s ventures toward a brighter future. The Search for the Most Outstanding National Architecture Week Program promoted a culture of excellence within the architectural community, encouraging continuous learning, skills development, and knowledge sharing. By acknowledging and rewarding exemplary performance, the members of the UAP will be motivated to strive for excellence in their professional endeavors, contributing to the overall improvement of architectural practices and standards. The NAW Closing Ceremony culminated with a symbolic gesture of unity, camaraderie and solidarity, as delegates from UAP, UAPGA and UAPSA joined hands in a moment of reflection, friendship and gratitude. Against the challenging week of endless organization and coordination, the celebration was the epitome of hope, optimism, and a renewed commitment to shaping a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future through architecture.
The A+D 2.0: Architectural Documentary Film Festival concluded with a momentous Awards Night held at Gestdan Centrum in Baguio City on December 7, 2023, in celebration of the National Architecture Week. The architectural filmfest, bannering the theme: “Legacy of the Past: Modern Architecture in Historical Context,” explored the tension between modern architectural designs and historical contexts in terms of adaptive reuse, contemporary interventions in historical sites, and the preservation of cultural heritage through innovative design.
The UAP Sentro ng Arkitekturang Filipino (SAF), led by its Executive Director, Arch. Ni ña G. Maiquez, launched the event last October 2, 2023 during the celebration of World Architecture Day. It received thirty entries from all over the country. The panel of judges was composed of Arch. Crisanto Lustre from the Historic Preservation Division, National Museum of the Philippines; Arch. Jeffrey “Foom” Cobilla, Executive Director of Escuela Taller de Filipinas; and Arch. Mariel Garcia from the Facilities Management Division, National Museum of the Philippines.
Guest speaker during the Awards Night was renowned National Artist for Film, Kidlat Tahimik. In his talk, he shared to the audience his insights and wisdom on his movie creation, being both the director and the actor.
From the eight finalists, clinching the top spot was “Sa Kanlungan ng Doble Zeta,” an entry of National University – Baliwag and UAP Barasoain Chapter. Winning second place was the entry of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and UAP Manila Corinthian Chapter, entitled “Ang Kape Mula sa Aljibe,” while Central Colleges of the Philippines and UAP Bagumbayan Chapter’s entry, “Sibol,” placed third. Cashes prizes and trophies were awarded to the winners.
The A+D 2.0: Architectural Documentary Film Festival was a huge success. With the support of the organizing committee, Area Coordinators, and the UAP National, it was able to achieve its goal of promoting the creative documentation of existing buildings in the country. What distinguishes Arch. William Ti, Jr. from his peers is not only his architectural brilliance but his deep-rooted social consciousness. At the age of 27, he founded his own architectural firm, WTA Architecture and Design Studio, which swiftly became among the country’s largest and most successful architectural firms. He is not merely an accomplished architect. He embodies a visionary approach, exemplifying the qualities of a compassionate leader and serves as a catalyst for positive change in our ever-evolving world, making him the recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Professional of the Year in Architecture Category 2023.
In the face of unprecedented global crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Arch. William emerged as a beacon of hope, showcasing not only his architectural prowess but also a profound commitment to social change. Within days of the pandemic, he initiated the construction of Emergency Quarantine Facilities for public and private hospitals alike, rallying his colleagues and friends to join the cause, illustrating his unwavering dedication to community welfare. He designed Emergency Quarantine Facilities, building 76 facilities and raising over 75 Million pesos together with various partner organizations. This initiative was a necessity for the community which was fully supported by yours truly, as UAP Manila Metro Chapter Vice President for Programs & Planning, wherein I donated P500,000 from my own pocket, and raised funds together with close friends, totaling nearly two million pesos for the construction to be fully realized. These facilities, offering over 1,500 beds, have become a crucial asset in augmenting hospital capacity during the pandemic. The designs were open-sourced by Arch. William, allowing them to be replicated across the Philippines and even in Singapore, providing over 3,000 additional beds and standing as one of the most widespread responses to the global health crisis.
His commitment extends beyond the architectural realm, exemplified by projects like The Book Stop Project library in Intramuros and the Riverlane pedestrian bridge across the Pasig River. These projects, rooted in the concept of “social architecture,” create spaces that foster social intimacy and serve as vital social infrastructure, connecting and uplifting communities. He actively advocates for a progressive “human environment,” designing large-scale projects like the Pasig River Development and Horizon Manila reclamation. These urban design projects prioritize community-focused planning, embracing an organically grown, barrier-free concept that nurtures genuine human connection. By creating architectural works with social impact and transformative change, awards and accolades followed, not solely for design aesthetics but for the profound impact he had on people’s lives.
Arch. William Ti, Jr.’s legacy lies in his reminder that everyone possesses the capacity to be an agent of social change. His genuine desire to create a better world for our society serves as an inspiration, urging others to look beyond themselves and contribute to the greater good. As he continues to shape the future of our built environment and advocate for social architecture, his impact reverberates not only through the structures he designs but through the communities he uplifts and the collective spirit he inspires.
In celebration of 2023’s Outstanding Professional of the Year for Architecture Category recipient, we honor our Katatak Metro, Arch. William Ti, Jr. The measure of a great architect does not depend on the quantity of buildings he designed, but in the quality of lives he impacted and improved. May his passion for positive change inspire and instigate a ripple effect of great deeds in us all.
The Committee on National and Civic Affairs (NACA) of the UAP Commission on Governmental and External Affairs (CGEA) held a fund-raising activity to support the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) projects initiated by Arch. Catherine Garcia, Chairperson of the NACA Committee for FY 2023-2024, with the help and support of Arch. Ibarra Burayag, NACA Vice-Chair and Arch. James Medina, NACA Secretary, and with the guidance of Arch. Mary Kristine Segovia, Executive Director of CGEA. Dubbed as “Architects Unplugged: A Caroling Christmas Fusion,” the event was held at the UAP Headquarters in Quezon City on December 20, 2023.
The fund-raising initiative was a hybrid set-up featuring talented architects all over the Philippines showcasing their musical talents as Christmas carollers. The singers gathered at the UAP Headquarters and sang different Christmas songs starting at 2 o’clock in the afternoon until 8 o’clock in the evening. While their performance was streamed live via Zoom, architects and suppliers logged in to enjoy the beautiful Christmas renditions of the carollers. As they were being serenaded, the online donors would send their donations through GCash. The event was able to
raise a substantial amount which will be allocated for CGEA’s CSR projects and activities. Also getting a share were the participating UAP chapters and the UAP HQ personnel.
The performers were members of different UAP chapters, namely: UAP Rizal Nuevo, UAP Pasig, UAP San Juan Pinaglabanan, UAP Manila Sampaloc, UAP La Union, and UAP Nueva Ecija. They rendered various carols, like “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night,” “Jingle Bells,” “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit,” “Kumukutikutitap,” “Pasko na Naman,” among others. The event was supported by UAP National President Richard Garcia, other members of the UAP National Board of Directors, Pacific Paint (Boysen) Philippines, Inc. and CKAP Builders, Inc.
The “Architects Unplugged” was perfect opportunity for the architects to showcase their talents, while spreading joy and to contribute to a worthy cause in time of the Christmas season. The activity was really a blast. With the success of the fund-raising event, Arch. Garcia distributed the percentage of the total raised funds through GCash to the respective participating UAP chapters. Indeed the Commission on
Governmental and External Affairs and Committee on National and Civic Affairs will continue its duties and responsibilities towards the attainment of the vision of United Architects of the Philippines.
The talented carollers were the following: Arch. Bobby Baradi of UAP La Union; Arch. Pavil Orias of UAP San Juan Pinaglabanan; Arch. Mark John Nino Villaruz of Pasig Chapter; Arch. The practice of architecture in the Philippines is the cornerstone of our built environment, shaping the spaces where we live, work, and play. We, architects, are not just designers; we are visionaries who design and create structures that reflect our culture, values, and aspirations. However, this noble profession faces several challenges that must be addressed to ensure its continued relevance and impact.
The recent Supreme Court rulings in the case files, DPWH VS. PICE, GAMOLO (G.R. NO. 200015) and UAP VS. PICE, GAMOLO (G.R. NO. 205846), released on November 9, 2023, underscore the significance of complying with Republic Act No. 9266 (RA 9266). Despite this, the finality and executory order of the decision are still pending. RA 9266 mandates that architectural documents be prepared, signed, and sealed by a registered and licensed architect. This requirement is not just a legal formality; it is a foundational principle of sound design and construction practice. Enacted in 2004, RA 9266 is legally sound and should be strongly and fully implemented. However, the full realization of this law is yet to be achieved, not only because of the ongoing case but also due to various factors hindering its execution at the local levels.
However, one of the most pressing issues is the absence of architects in many localities, particularly in rural and remote areas. This absence not only limits access to quality architectural services but also raises concerns about the safety and quality of buildings. To address this, there must be unity among building industry professionals to promote the importance of having qualified architects involved in every project and for architects to be visible in the community.
Indeed, addressing the shortage of architects in suburban and rural areas requires a multi-faceted approach. One potential solution could
involve improving the quality of graduates and increasing the number of architectural schools nationwide. By enhancing the quality of education and training provided to aspiring architects, we can ensure that graduates are well-equipped to meet the demands of the profession and contribute effectively to their communities. Additionally, expanding the number of architectural schools across the country can help increase access to architectural education and attract more students to the field. This, in turn, can lead to a greater pool of qualified architects who are willing and able to work in underserved areas, ultimately helping to address the shortage and improve the quality of architectural services available to all Filipinos.
Another challenge is the misconception among the public about the cost of hiring an architect. Many believe that professional architectural services are expensive, leading them to seek cheaper alternatives. However, this overlooks the value that architects bring to a project, including our ability to optimize space, improve functionality, and ensure environmental sustainability. It is essential to educate the public about the benefits of hiring a qualified architect and the long-term value we provide.
Furthermore, there is often confusion and overlap in the roles and scope of practice among architects, engineers, and other building industry professionals. This ambiguity leads to disputes and inefficiencies in project management. To address this, the proper government agency, such as the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), must strictly uphold its mandate to regulate the profession and ensure that each professional’s role is clearly defined and respected.
To address these challenges, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE), the
United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), and all relevant stakeholders must uphold the provisions of RA 9266 and ensure strict compliance with its requirements. This includes but is not limited to conducting forums, workshops, and advocacy campaigns to educate stakeholders and the community about the legal implications of the rulings. Additionally, local government units, under the leadership of their local chief executives along with their council or board members, must plan and execute proper actions to prepare and allocate resources for implementing RA 9266 accordingly. This proactive approach is essential for ensuring the effective enforcement of the law and the promotion of quality architectural practices within their jurisdictions.
The practice of architecture in the Philippines is a vital profession that shapes our world in profound ways. By addressing the challenges, it faces and promoting unity among industry professionals, we can ensure that architecture continues to enrich our lives and communities for generations to come.

The observance of the National Architecture Week (NAW), with the theme, “Sigaw ng Alon: Soaring Beyond the Boundaries of Architecture,” last December 4 to 9, 2023 was a significant occasion for the United Architects of the Philippines. The week-long celebration, though centered in Baguio City, was also observed in various localities in the country. This was the 52nd time that the NAW was celebrated ever since it started and the second time it was observed in conjunction with the Philippine Architecture Festival (PAF), which was launched in December 2022 at Angelfields Nature Sanctuary in Silang, Cavite.
It should be noted that the NAW was first celebrated in 1971 when then President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. issued Proclamation No. 934 declaring the second week of December of every year as Architecure Week to recognize architects for “their invaluable contribution towards planned urban growth, environmental planning, and for over-all social progress.”
Since then, the observance of the NAW has grown by leaps and bounds. From simple programs and activities, it has now become a more inclusive and diversified event which is way beyond what we have been doing in the past. With the launching of the PAF, we have levelled up the celebration. From colorful floats to street dancing, from week-long architectural exhibits to informative lectures, and documentary films competition to fun runs, the celebration has become an rich tapestry of assorted events with the common aim of honoring the contributions of architects to Philippine culture, spreading the knowledge about the significance of architecture in defining our communities, and promoting our profession’s role in nation building.
For this fiscal year, the celebration of the National Architecture Week and the Philippine Architecture Festival in Baguio City has climbed a notch higher.
The programs and activities jibed with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), underscoring sustainable design practices, community engagement, and architectural solutions geared towards the advancement of economic, environmental, and social objectives.
Thus, with the SDGs in mind, the activities were organized to have a more meaningful observance of NAW. But more than anything, the entire week-long series of events was curated to achieve an overall festive occasion, which highlighted the rich art and culture of Philippine architecture. Indeed, this made the celebration more exciting and more memorable to all architects, aspiring architects, industry partners, and stakeholders in the architecture profession.

United Architects of the Philippines – Bataan Peninsulares Chapter (UAPBPC), in collaboration with Bataan Arkisketchers and in partnership with SM Supermalls, organized a three-day architecture exhibit in celebration of National Architecture Week (NAW) and Philippine Architecture Festival at SM City Bataan from December 2 to 4, 2023.
This year’s event theme, “Sigaw ng Alon: Soaring Beyond the Boundaries of Architecture,” signifies a powerful metaphor for the boundless principle of the profession. The event kicked off with a motorcade that traversed municipalities of Bataan and concluded at SM City Bataan, where the opening ceremony took place.
In her opening remarks, Chapter President Roxanne Cadiz underscored architecture’s pivotal role in shaping Bataan’s landscape and the recent triumph of the Supreme Court’s mandate that only architects can sign and seal architectural sheets in building permits.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jayper Merla from the Cultural and Heritage Preservation Division of Bataan mentioned the significance of architecture in preserving the cultural heritage of the province and its impact especially considering Bataan’s wealth of culture and history.
He also mentioned the concept of having a dedicated office in the provincial government under the leadership of an architect to integrate the principles of architecture in cultural heritage preservation and strategic planning of upcoming projects in the province.
Engr. Jose Singca Jr, SM Building Administration Officer, and Mr. Christian Neil Soriano, SM Marketing Manager expressed their gratitude and anticipation for future collaborations with the chapter. Honorable Marie Carunungan, Municipal Councilor of Pilar, emphasized the essential role of architecture, acknowledging architects for their contributions in nation building.
John Rei Estrella presented NAW 2023’s rationale, leading to the official commencement of the exhibit. The three-day event featured architects providing free consultations to the public, fostering engagement and showcasing the profession’s impact on Bataan’s development.
By Rosita Laura Isabel Vizmonte, UAPThe UAP Diliman Chapter embarked on an architectural heritage tour of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Abandoned, more commonly known as the Santa Ana Church in Manila, on November 18, 2023. The architects had the privilege to see parts of the church, convent, and courtyard that previously were sacred ancestral grounds. The experiential learning served as a testament to the ingenuity of the past generations showcasing timeless design strategies, climate adaptation, and cultural preservation.
The participants were able to delve into the church’s rich past through the lecture shared by the Escuela Taller de Filipinas Foundations, Inc. (ETFFI). Diliman Chapter member and ETFFI President Carmen Bettina Bulaong,
with Arch. Jeffrey Cobilla, imparted the importance of the protection, conservation, and rehabilitation of the Philippine’s architectural heritage. Sharing fascinating photos depicting the church’s original structure design and its subsequent changes across different time periods, they underscored the importance of historical and cultural research. Beyond this knowledge, restoration works require diligence, attention to detail, patience, and determination to ascertain the facts and findings.
The heritage tour provided a platform for meaningful dialogues. By fostering discussions on this track that one may pursue, the collective understanding of the role architects play in addressing societal challenges in heritage conservation is strengthened. Engaging communities is integral to the undertaking as it
the stakeholders with a sense of identity and belonging while retaining the integrity of design.
While challenges in the restoration, construction, and management exist for a historical structure built in 1725, the participatory process promotes community awareness, support, and capacity for the preservation of Santa Ana Church. Reflecting on the tour, the architects recognize the intrinsic connection between past, present, and future. Embracing our heritage not only enriches our architectural practice but also empowers us to create spaces that are both environmentally responsible and culturally significant.
OnJanuary 28, 2024, UAP Marikina Valley Chapter had its first Balangkasan joint event with UAP Rizal East Chapter, held at Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, along Marcos Highway, Antipolo City. The topic was one of the most controversial in the field of architecture today: “Will the Integration of Artificial Intelligence Enhance or Impede the Artistic Proficiency of Architects.”
Architects Raymond Munar and Giovanni Blanche from Marikina Valley Chapter served as panelists advocating for the affirmative stance. They articulated a compelling argument asserting that the integration of AI will indeed enhance the artistic proficiency of architects. Through a detailed enumeration of key points, they passionately advocated for the notion that AI integration will augment, rather than hinder, architects’ artistic prowess.
Architects Lyndon Sheridan Trinidad and Columbus Cordova from Rizal East Chapter, the panelists advocating for the negative stance, were also able to justify their side by enumerating the reasons against its integration. It was a very interactive debate. The audience were also given a chance to ask questions to the panelists on both sides. There were attendees who also shared valuable information on their first-hand experiences with AI in their corporate and private practices, which made the activity more interesting.

According to this policy, public schools—elementary, secondary, or tertiary—that have been selected by the Presidential Council for Countryside Development are given the opportunity to get support and assistance from the state in collaboration with private organizations. This program will support the schools by providing publications such as books, and other instructional resources; building new facilities; improving existing facilities; developing staff and faculty for training and higher education; and modernizing instructional technologies.
With this program, UAP Tarlac Kublahi was given an opportunity to become a partner in education by extending assistance to Don Pepe Cojuangco Homes Elementary School in Tarlac City to modernize and improve its facilities. This served as an avenue for the school to benefit from the chapter’s future initiatives
and fundraising events by receiving donations, such as instructional materials, infrastructure development materials, and learning assistance.
On February 15, 2024, UAP Tarlac Kublahi Chapter President Edgar Villarta and School Principal Elyzabeth Sayson of DPCH Elementary School,as DepEd representative, signed a Memorandum of Agreement to formalize this collaboration.
An organized feeding program and dental mission for students were started as part of the program in cooperation with other organizations. Instead of directly giving financial assistance, the members of the organization provided support by donating construction materials to help the school rebuild its facilities.
As part of its commitment to education, UAP Tarlac Kublahi is entrusted with the responsibility of continuously supporting its beneficiaries in making the most of
their resources. While basic education is too big and important a task to be left to the government, members of the chapter are committed to work together to serve the youth and instill change to the nation.
There was a vision to empower architects in line with the United Architects of the Philippines’ goal to futureproof the organization and the members. With the Arkitalk Series of UAP La Union Lam-ang, the vision has turned into reality. But where did it all start?
The Arkitalk Series began when the chapter’s charter president, Arch. Dwayne Gaius Japson, discussed during a board meeting on how to help the new members establish their own practice and also to help the members be more educated through talks coming from experienced speakers. The aim was to help especially the new members who just recently passed the board examination. Through this vision, the Arkitalk Series came to be.
The first Arkitalk Series, which was about the never-ending topic regarding the architect’s professional fee, was held on August 20, 2022. The speaker was the Charter President himself, Arch. Japson. The next Arkitalk events had the following speakers: current District A1a Director Estrelita Rugnao, with her topic regarding government projects; Project Management expert, Arch. Jacqueline Miranda of Gridlines MGS Construction and Project Management Inc.; former president of IIEE La Union Engr. Michael Fontanilla discussing the professional fees of electrical engineers; and Regional Director of DOLE-RO1 Exequiel Ronie Guzman, with his talk about the Department of Labor and Employment.
The most recent Arkitalk Series, entitled “Empowering Architects: A Comprehensive Guide in Registering an Architectural Firm and Navigating Tax Compliance as a Professional,” was held on January 26, 2024 at Max’s Restaurant, San Fernando City, La Union. The speakers were from the DTIRO1, represented by its Provincial Director Ms. Merlie Membrere; and the BIR-RO1, represented by its Revenue Officers namely; Ms. Rassel Gay Alfonso, Mr. Denver Lacasandile, Ms. Michelle Ginez, Ms. Glaidyl Zarate, Ms. Bernilyn De Sola, and Ms. Jenifer Beltran. The event was graced by other UAP chapters in La Union - UAP La Union Chapter, represented
aim of the Arkitalk Series is to empower its members to be more knowledgeable not only in the profession but also in other aspects related to it. This is just a beginning that will be followed through the years to be passed on to the next generations, a legacy seeking to futureproof the organization, especially the members of the UAP La Union Lam-ang Chapter, which also hopes to inspire other chapters in the organization.
The United Architects of the Philippines Zambales Olongapo Chapter (UAPZO) organized an extraordinary event in celebration of the National Architecture Week (NAW) and the Philippine Architecture Festival. Held at the SM City Olongapo Central, the event spanned from December 7-11, 2023, attracting architects, students, and enthusiasts alike from all corners of the province.
Under the theme “Sigaw ng Alon: Soaring beyond the Boundaries of Architecture,” the chapter presented its interpretation, encapsulated in the powerful phrase “ALPAS: Breaking the Stigma in Architecture.” The term “ALPAS” resonates with the idea of breaking loose and being set free, challenging preconceived notions that architecture is confined to mere aesthetics and drawings.
The exhibit showcased a diverse array of works by architects hailing not only from Olongapo City but also from the entire province of Zambales. Additionally, the event featured contributions from members practicing their craft in foreign countries, adding an international flair to the exhibition, and architectural scale models of Architecture students from Columban College Inc. A notable highlight of the event was the presentation of 3D walkthroughs and actual videos showcasing the finished projects of the architects.
The grand opening ceremonies took place on December 9, 2023, attended by the architects, their families, and friends. Chapter President Arch. Shane
This event would not have been possible without the generous support of industry partners. Davies Paints Philippines Inc., J.E.Quimson Architects and Builders, and Kai Aluminum and Glass Supply played crucial roles in making the event a resounding success.
“ALPAS: Breaking the Stigma in Architecture” shattered misconceptions and showcased the depth of architectural creativity, inspiring a new generation to explore the limitless possibilities within the world of architecture.
Held on November 18 to 19, 2023 in Mabini, Batangas, “Layag: Unveiling Nature’s Wisdom, Nurturing Architectural Minds” was a collaboration led by UAP Fort Bonifacio Chapter with UAP Makati Greenbelt Chapter. Joined by 53 participants, it showcased a diverse range of activities, including freediving, continuous education seminars for professionals, and coastal cleanup, aligning with the theme of merging architectural minds with the wisdom of nature. The event brought architects and environmentalists, with primary sponsors Boysen, Holcim, ZK Teco, Yatai Corporation, and 4N NGS, to explore innovative approach to sustainable architecture and foster a deeper connection with the environment.

Luis Titus Aguirre IV, provided a heartfelt exploration of the personal and professional journey of an architect.
In “Lessons Learned: A Decade of Practical Green,” Arch. Miguel Guerrero reflected on his decade of experience in sustainable architecture. Mr. Rench Zeus Ramos, a climate reality leader, raised awareness about ocean
conservation in his talk, “Ocean Awareness.” Lastly, Holcim, in partnership with Geo-cycle, conducted a seminar on “Rethinking Waste and Drivers of the Circular Economy,” an engagement in which the selection of materials and its impact to waste and damage to the environment was discussed.
The participants actively engaged in the coastal clean-up and freediving, underscoring the event’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The architects and participants worked together to collect and properly dispose of marine debris, contributing to the preservation of the local ecosystem. The freediving session, comprised of a detailed seminar on the basics of safe freediving, provided a unique opportunity for participants to connect with the ocean, reinforcing the importance of understanding and preservation of marine biodiversity.
“The Green Pencil Project” or GPP is the CSR arm of the UAP Makati Greenbelt Chapter. It is founded on the belief that “The Pencil is a tool to Educate and Inspire.” With a vision of a Philippines that deeply values the essence of architecture and its impact on society, the initiative aspires to enlighten and empower Filipino children with a basic understanding of the importance of architecture.
In its fifth year, the GPP has transcended geographical boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on the Community Base Drug Rehabilitation Program of the Ako Ang Saklay, Inc. in Luyos, Nueva Ecija. Held on December 2, 2023, the GPP reached out to over 100 children of parents undergoing drug rehabilitation and amplified the project’s commitment to community welfare and educational empowerment.
Choosing the said institution as the beneficiary for the GPP reflects UAP Makati Greenbelt’s dedication to support communities facing unique challenges. The activity brought joy and education to the children who enjoyed the day filled with creative learning and fun activities with the architects.
The GPP is not just about distributing stationery and art materials. It is a visionary initiative that aspires to build a Philippines that appreciates the significance of architecture, one child at a time. By reaching out to diverse communities and addressing the needs of different backgrounds, the project exemplifies the transformative power of education and community engagement.
Through the GPP, UAP Makati Greenbelt Chapter continues to inspire architects and the broader community to contribute to building a brighter and more inclusive future for the younger generation.
In its five-year journey, “The Green Pencil Project” has touched the lives of almost 500 children from various backgrounds – orphans, differently-abled kids, indigenous children, and now, the children of parents undergoing rehabilitation from drug dependence. The success of this initiative underscores the power of collective action and community engagement, reinforcing the belief that architects can go beyond constructing physical structures. They also build bridges to a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
Inits post-celebration of the National Architecture Week 2023, the United Architects of the Philippines – Tabaco Chapter (UAPTC), under the leadership of Chapter President Efren Bellen Jr., launched the “Kurit” Project, a fundraising and gift-giving CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiative of the chapter. The activity was conducted at Tabgon Elementary School in Sitio Antom, Brgy. Misibis, Tiwi, Albay on December 14, 2023.
The objective of the activity was to inspire, motivate, educate, and develop the creative side of the student beneficiaries, particularly the IP (Indigenous People) children who are students of the said school. The activity somehow
ignited their artistic skills by the free basic art materials and basic art workshops provided by the chapter, thus the vernacular term “kurit,” which literally translates to “guhit.”
Based on the number of IP children who participated in the activity, almost 98% of the total target IPs attended the activity. Through the art workshops, UAP Tabaco was able to enhance and develop the artistic and creative skills of the IP children belonging to the Agta-Tabangnon tribe. The chapter likewise gave the kids an opportunity to experience free art lessons. Member architects of the chapter who are also artists shared their experiences and gave art tips to the students. The art materials distributed would be very
useful in their daily school needs and when practicing their drawing skills. Mayor Jaime Villanueva of Tiwi, Albay, who is also a member of the chapter, joined in the distribution of art materials.
With the success of the “Kurit” Project, UAP Tabaco Chapter has resolved to conduct the activity annually at a chosen beneficiary school. This event will be held every December in celebration of National Architecture Week and in concordance with Christmas, the season of giving and sharing.
With the aim of restoring the old St. Dominic de Guzman Parish Church in Sto. Domingo, Albay, a significant meeting was held at the said church on December 15, 2023. The meeting was attended by Conservation Architect Rino D.A. Fernandez, Parish Priest Reverend Fr. Antonio Ballares, UAP Tabaco Chapter President Efren Bellen Jr., Program Chairperson Arch. Elaine Cuera, and other members of UAP Tabaco Chapter. The activity marks the official take-off of the Pamana Project, an initiative of the chapter to rehabilitate and restore the St. Dominic de Guzman Parish Church.
The meeting focused on the discussion of renovations on the existing bell tower and other areas that need immediate repairs. Also discussed were the options to undertake the repairs via
traditional ways such as the application of the apog lime to maintain the church’s original materials. This method is also an important consideration for the structure’s application as a National Historical Site.
Right after the meeting, a drone inspection of the tower and other areas was conducted. The architects also inspected the newly installed staircase and the interior of the bell tower.
This project is another milestone of UAP Tabaco Chapter in enhancing and protecting the structure in the future. The parish will still conduct fundraising activities to finance the restorations. Any initiativethat will help the church to secure funds in order for the community to have a more stable and secure structure is very much welcome.
The St. Dominic de Guzman Parish Church was constructed in 1850 under the supervision of then parish priest Fr. Martin Martinez, who served for thirty-one years from 1835 to 1866. This church replaced an old one, which was built on a site closer to the sea after the town was founded.
San Juanico Chapter, in collaboration with the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP) Tacloban South Chapter, United Architects of the Philippines Student Axillary (UAPSA) – Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) Chapter, Island Premium Paints, Leyte National High School, and Barangay 49 of Tacloban City, conducted a mural painting activity on February 10 to 12, 2024 at Leyte National High School in Tacloban City.
The CSR project is aimed to promote the “Be Honest Campaign” of the BCBP. The advocacy seeks to bring Jesus Christ and the Christian
values in the market place (workplace) and winning the marketplace for Christ. Honesty, one of the golden principles in the Christian faith, is a compass that influences entrepreneurs and professionals in their business dealings. Conceptualization of the project started in September of 2023 during a coffee chat between San Juanico Chapter President Primier Solajes and present Chapter Head of the BCBP Tacloban South Chapter, Engr. Eric Oliva. A blank perimeter wall of the Leyte National High School along Lino Gonzaga Avenue was selected as ideal spot for the mural being a strategic location.
A ssisting Solajes in spearheading the project were the other officers of the chapter, namely: Director for Arkitektong Filipino Julius Tadeo,
Vice President for Operations Divina Buñales. A member of BCBP for almost fifteen years, serving as immediate past Head of Programs and Services Directorate and focusing on this advocacy, Solajes found the perfect opportunity to work out a collaboration between the two organizations when he assumed the presidency this fiscal year of UAP San Juanico Chapter. The partnership would further boost the “Be Honest” campaign and at the same time promote the architecture profession.
The Bacolod Azucar Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) collaborated with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to design and construct the Park and Playground for Families of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) at the Metro Bacolod District Jail (MBDJ) Male Dormitory Annex in Barangay Handumanan, Bacolod City. Spearheaded by Chapter President Glenn Ymballa, the project aims to provide recreational amenities for the families of incarcerated individuals. The concept of the project entailed utilizing discarded tires from tractors, cars, and bicycles as aesthetic design accents and play obstacles for individual use.
The park and playground were inaugurated on December 1, 2023, with the attendance of UAP National President Richard Garcia, Jail Superintendent Abner Zamora, and Councilor Pao Sy, representing Bacolod City Mayor Hon. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez. Also present were Arch. Jennifer Gasambelo,
Executive Council member of the UAP National Committee on Architecture and Allied Arts; Arch. Jonathan Iral, Deputy District C2 Director; Arch. Francis De Los Reyes, past District C2 Director and former Center for Filipino Architecture Coordinator for the Visayas; and Arch. Rafael Tan, UAP Bacolod Azucar Charter President; along with other officers and members of the UAP Bacolod Azucar Chapter.
The project aligns with the BJMP’s “My Jail my Home” initiative, which seeks to provide humane safekeeping and reformative development of PDLs while restoring family ties and personal support systems through holistic, child-friendly, and safe environment during their visitation rights. Further, it endeavors to harness the inmates’ creativity by involving them in activities such as craftsmanship and building works that contribute to the society.
The Park and Playground for Families of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) project highlighted the capabilities of individuals from the different strata of society, from inmates to architects. The UAP Bacolod AzucarBJMP collaborative initiative shows that there is strength in solidarity and compassion.
More than 300 Visayan architects came together in the Queen City of the South for this year’s UAP Joint Area C Assembly held on February 15-17,2024. The delegates were treated with not just the warm Cebuano hospitality but also with avenues for professional growth through continuing professional development (CPD) seminars and museum tours. The assembly was last held in Cebu last January 2020, just weeks before the whole country went into a pandemic quarantine.
Day 0, Feb. 15 (Thursday). The assembly kicked off with the Area C-wide Arkilympics, where architects competed in five sports disciplines: basketball, badminton, billiards, bowling and shooting. The whole day sports event formally opened at the City Sports Club Cebu, Cebu City, which was the venue for the basketball and badminton games. After warming up together to get ready for play, the participants took their oath of sportsmanship, led by the chair for this year’s Area C Arkilympics, “PacMan” himself, Architect Armund Claro.
District C1-Cebu Team A copped the championship in men’s basketball after defeating District C2-Bacolod, which got the runner-up position. Cebu’s Team B finished third. In badminton, District C2’s tandem of Roger Andre Aguilar and Bernard Sua finished on top, followed by District C1’s Carl Audren Que and Ann Marie Cuizon and District C4’s Dolly Ann Zuluaga and Samuel Hibionada. District C4’s Gil Japitana won the gold in bowling and District C1 dominated shooting with Florante Catalan, Jeffrey Pugoy and Zorich Guia finishing first, second and third, respectively.
Day 1, Feb. 16 (Friday). The next day saw the delegates heading to the Bai Hotel in Mandaue City for the opening ceremonies of the Area C Assembly. With UAP Area C Vice President Rolan Paolo Alberto and this year’s assembly’s overall chair, District C1 Director Leartes Tabotabo, Jr. at the helm, the ceremonies took place smoothly witnessed by the UAP National Officers, headed by National President Richard Garcia, in complete attendance. In his speech, Arch. Alberto briefly explained the assembly’s theme, which is the Visayan term “duyog” or “to accompany or go with.” He emphasized the importance of having a harmonious professional relationship, not just among architects, but also with allied professions, industry partners and the general public.
The CPD seminars immediately got underway after the General Assembly inside the cavernous ballroom of Bai Hotel. The assembly organizing committee pointed out that their choice of speakers for each day was to make sure that they have both seasoned and upcoming architects in the lineup. Thus, for the afternoon seminars of Day 1, Cebuano architect Buddy Ong of UAP Datu Lapu Lapu Chapter and immediate past national president (IPP) of the UAP, Armando Eugene de Guzman III, delivered their talks on various topics. Arch. Ong’s talk was entitled, “Re-Assembling New Practices,” wherein he shared his experience in digital fabrication and how architects should put a
premium on their intentions in design and specialize. UAP IPP De Guzman later followed with his sharing, entitled “Start, Upkeep, Responsive, Evolve: SURE Architecture,” on starting the practice and how to face the challenges associated with establishing one’s self as an architect in the “real world.”
The long but professionally-enriching day, which started with the Chapter Presidents meeting and opening of the construction exhibits in the morning, was capped with a Welcome Dinner. During the program, the winners of the Arkilympics were awarded their medals and delegates were treated to a performance by the Sinulog sa Kabataan 2024 grand champions.
Day 2, Feb. 17 (Saturday). The tandem of Bohol’s “Probinsyanong Arkitekto,” German Nino Guidaben, and Past UAP National President, Benjamin Panganiban, Jr., took their turn on the speaker’s podium for the morning CPD seminars. Architect Guidaben talked about the value of finding one’s market and niche in the practice while Architect
The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) - Cebu Chapter, which is the first UAP chapter in the country, celebrated its 48th anniversary on January 25, 2024, at the Sinulog Grand Ballroom of The City Sports Club Cebu in Cebu City. The chapter was founded on January 15,1975 and was chartered a year later on January 20,1976. The event was a momentous occasion that brought together chapter members, the Council of Presidents, the College of Fellows, District C1 officers, and the esteemed Chancellor of the College of Fellows.
The celebration was not only a commemoration of the chapter’s rich history but also an acknowledgment of its significant contributions to both the architectural community and the wider society.
The evening commenced with a warm welcome to all attendees, setting the tone for a night filled with camaraderie and celebration. The venue, the Sinulog Grand Ballroom, provided an elegant backdrop for the festivities, creating an atmosphere that reflected the prestige of the occasion.
Arch. Jose Mari Cañizares, a respected figure in the field of architecture, took the stage as the keynote speaker. His address centered on the diverse opportunities awaiting new architects in the ever-evolving industry. Cañizares’ insights not only inspired aspiring architects but also served as a reminder of the pivotal role the UAP Cebu Chapter has played in nurturing and supporting the growth of professionals in the field.
The Guest Speaker for the evening was none other than Past UAP National President Benjamin Panganiban Jr. His discourse delved into the recent Supreme Court decision, providing attendees with valuable insights into the legal landscape affecting the architectural profession. Panganiban’s presence added a layer of gravitas to the celebration, underlining the

The UAP Cebu Chapter remains a beacon of inspiration, providing a platform for architects to thrive, collaborate, and contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of Philippine architecture.
DECONEX is an abbreviation of “Design and Construction Exhibit,” a pioneering public event in Mindanao that is a gathering of architects, builders, and construction industry partners. Held during the first quarter of every year in Cagayan de Oro City, it showcases both local and international brands of building materials and utilities and the latest in design and technology. Founded and continually spearheaded by two leading architecture organizations in the Northern Mindanao region - UAP Cagayan de Oro Chapter and UAP Gold CDO Chapter,. the exhibit got its name from “CONEX” or “Construction Exhibit,” held annually in conjunction with the UAP National Convention. “Design” was then added in order to promote the practice of architects in the region.
It was conceived to further reinvigorate the architecture profession in Cagayan de Oro City, creating an impact on the local community. While the construction side of the exhibit includes brands presenting their products and innovations, the design aspect involves the architects (members from both chapters) having their own displays in a dedicated booth to promote their works (conceptual or finished projects) to the public eye. Design and industry talks are also held during the event with fellow professionals invited as speakers. The event does not stop at exhibits
and talks. Workshops, photography contests (for professional photographers), and design competitions for architecture students are also held. The suppliers and organizational committee give back to the audience through exciting raffle prizes. And on a dedicated night, both exhibitors and architects attend a private event highlighted by fellowship, socialization, games, raffles, and meals.
DECONEX had its first launch back in 2009 at Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City – continuing for more than a decade, until in 2020 when it was suspended
due to the Coronavirus pandemic. It recently staged a comeback on February 8 to 11, 2024 with the theme “Resurgence of Design Ingenuity.” Participated by around fifty industry exhibitors, the exhibit was able to cater to architects as the leading professionals in the design and construction field, as well as those from other allied professions, who are greatly interested in the newest trends and innovations in building materials and technologies in the construction industry. To be able to expand its service and benefits to construction professionals, DECONEX has plans of providing CPD points to the architects for its design talks in the future. Likewise, it intends to collaborate with other UAP chapters to broaden its organization committee to cater to a bigger number of audience and exhibitors.
Last December 13-16, 2023, the UAP CDO Bay Area Chapter, in collaboration with University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines UAPSAUSTP Chapter, celebrated the National Architecture Week 2023, with the theme, ‘Sigaw ng Alon: Soaring Beyond the Boundaries of Architecture.” On the first day, architects in the academe provided talks on different and timely topics. Arch. Kristy Marie Lagamon talked about “Architecture History Appreciation,’’ Arch. Aimeelou Jean Demetrio shared her love of architectural heritage in her talk on “Historical Preservation in Misamis Oriental,” Arch. Romel Eltanal shared a synopsis of his master’s thesis “Mobility and Walkability: An Analysis of Urban Design Elements around Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro,‘’ and Arch. Jiffer John Taala shared the value of
understanding the sun and solar geometry in the process of designing architecture in “Here comes the Sun: Introduction to Climatic Design.” Attendees, who included students from various programs, professors, teachers, and other visitors of the weeklong celebration, have gained insights on different views of architectural history, heritage, urban design, and climatic design. The talks inspired the audience not just to celebrate architecture but to appreciate the value of architecture from its inception up to conserving and preserving our built heritage.
On the succeeding days, the chapter organized an exhibit for the USTP architecture students to display their plates, miniature models, architectural renderings, and
undergraduate theses. They also had other events like mixed-media caricature making, peer activity, spelling bee, quiz bee, model making, and miniature making contest that challenged the general knowledge of students in various topics in architecture, planning, arts, and design. Aside from the quirky activities, the Arki Week ended with the recognition and awarding of winners and sponsor UAP chapter, the UAP-CDO Bay Area Chapter. Truly the success of the celebration is a tetament of the fellowship and camaraderie of students and architects, and their shared love for architecture and design.
Celebrating the National Architecture Week simultaneously with the whole United Architects of the Philippines organization, the UAP District D1 marked this annual observance with a string of activities in Davao City on December 4 to 9, 2023.
To jumpstarting the celebration, a motorcade was conducted around the city on December 4. Participated by architects, suppliers, and members of the UAP Graduate Auxiliary (UAPGA) and the UAP Student Auxiliary (UAPSA), the convoy started at the KJC Kingdome and ended at La Herencia Davao, where the NAW opening ceremonies was held.
A tour of the exhibit featuring the 2023 Garbo D1strito honorees followed next. Garbo D1strito is an annual award bestowed to a “seasoned” member architect of a UAP District D1 chapter in recognition of his/her contribution to the organization and to the architecture profession. Events on December 5 to 7 highlighted activities organized by UAPGA Davao Chapter and UAPSA chapters of the different architecture schools in Davao City.
On December 8, the Architectural Forum and Talks was held at the Jose Maria College. The resource persons were past UAP National President Benjamin Panganiban, past UAP Davao Chapter President Daniel Lim, Arch. Fredinel Banaag, and UAP Chancellor of the College of Fellows James Jao, who discussed about the topics: “What’s Next After the Supreme Court Ruling of IRR 1096 Sec. 302?,” “Business Practice in Architecture,” “Architecture Design

Davao City and the rest of the Davao Region experienced continuous heavy rains for several days starting the final days of January and through the first few days of February. This prolonged period of rainfall caused floods, landslides, and other related incidents which damaged roads, bridges, buildings, and houses. Moreover, it affected approximately 45,000 families in the Davao Region, creating an adverse impact on their daily activities and livelihoods.
Seeing the plight of fellow Davaoeños, members of the United Architects of the Philippines - Davao Chapter were quick to respond. The group, led by Chapter President Sheanna Bacus, organized relief operations to aid affected families in two flood-prone areas located in Davao and Tagum Cities.
The first relief operation was undertaken on February 2, 2024 during the height of the flooding incidents. In collaboration with Qualitest Solutions & Technologies Inc. and other volunteers, the UAP Davao Chapter Cares Team braved the flooded streets of Jade Valley Homes in Barangay Tigatto, Davao City and offered aid to residents trapped in their homes without electricity and with dwindling supplies of food, water, and other necessities.
Nine days later, on February 11, 2024, UAP Davao Chapter embarked on another relief effort. This time, the people of Barangay Busaon in Tagum City, Davao del Norte were the beneficiaries of the Davao architects’ kind-heartedness. The architects initiated a donation drive and collected essential items, such as bottled water, canned goods, and packs of instant noodles. They meticulously packed these items and distributed to affected families.
These rapid and collaborative efforts serve as a testament to the dedication and solidarity of UAP Davao Chapter and its extended network. Through their swift action and collective generosity, the Davao architects exemplify the unwavering spirit of community and compassion in times of crisis.
Members of the United Architects of the Philippines – Datu Bago-Dabaw Chapter held a series of outdoor activities on November 3 to 4, 2023 in Barangay Marahan, Marilog District in Davao City. Located around 54 kilometers from heart of the city, Marahan is a mountainous region characterized by its relatively cool climate. The location was the perfect place to escape the stressful city and enjoy an adventure and purposeful weekend. So, the architects hopped on their motorbikes and enjoyed the almost one-hour ride towards their destination.
Upon arrival, the members, along with some sponsors and industry partners, started off their activities with a gift giving and feeding program for the lumad children of the local community. Loot bags containing necessities were also handed out to the kids. Matigsalug and Obu-Manuvu tribes inhabit that area of Barangay Marahan.
Then the group headed to the hills for the tree planting activity. This was done in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and DARUARS (Davao Region Upland Agriculture Research Station), particularly Ms. Jessel Cardines, the Agricultural Center Chief III. A total of 96 mahogany seedlings were planted during the tree planting conducted that day.
After accomplishing two worthwhile undertakings in their itinerary, the tired but motivated architects decided to call it a day. But not after having an exhilarating fellowship night, where all the participants really enjoyed and had so much fun.
The children are very happy to receive loot bags from the architects.
The following day, the chapter trained its sights on building camaraderie among its members. Putting on their hiking shoes, the architects began trekking through a scenic mountain trail. After hiking for one hour, they finally arrived at their target, which were two magnificent waterfalls nestled within rock formations at the side of a hill – the Pamantawan and AwanAwan Falls.
The two-day outdoor adventure was a success. Aside from having a great time, the architects developed a sense of fulfilment having helped the
less fortunate children and the environment. It was really an unforgettable experience. Appreciation goes to all the adventure-seeking architects who joined the event but were not afraid to have their boots muddied. The chapter would also like to express its gratitude to its sponsor, Boysen Paints, represented by Allen Virtucio, and to Kristina Reyes of Onduline, who aside from hanging out with the architects, even cooked the food for everyone to savor.
As a perfect way to usher in the love month, members of the United Architects of the Philippines – Davao Alpha Chapter gave love and shared their blessings to less fortunate children. The architects, headed by Chapter President Brian Birrey, conducted a simple feeding and gift-giving program at the Christ Faith Communion Church in Barangay Gatungan, Bunawan District, Davao City on February 3, 2024.
Barangay Gatungan is a far-flung rural community located in the hinterlands of Davao City. The main source of livelihood of its less than two thousand residents comes from working as tenants in coconut farmlands. Some also grow banana and corn crops. With very much minimal economic development in the area, families have barely enough to make both ends meet.
With the aim of making the children in this sleepy mountainous barangay happy, members of UAP Davao Alpha decided to give the kids a pre-Valentine treat. The architects were warmly welcomed by Pastor Ray Laureano when they arrived at his humble church. The event, attended by children and mothers in the community, started with a sharing of the Word of God. Games were prepared for the kids who had so much fun and enjoyed the prizes handed to them. School supplies and hygiene kits were also distributed. Then the children were treated to a hearty lunch courtesy of UAP Davao Alpha.
As much as the architects wanted to have a positive effect on the children through their small gesture of giving, they felt more inspired that even with the kids’ lack of material things, the children are still so full of hope, joy, and faith in life. Their contagious smiles are something that money cannot buy. When one child dearly shared from memory the verse in John 15:7: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you,” the architects were reminded that most of the time, as
professionals, they easily get drowned with a lot of things to do, especially when overwhelming deadlines are at hand. But even so, it is very important never to forget to give back to the community. And that whatever one’s status during the Valentine’s season -- whether married, single, heartbroken, or perhaps looking for love, it is important to always remain in God’s love and you will never be lost.

Called Al Muntada, this is a 400 square-meter space built over a 2,200 square meter land that showcases the latest innovations of Saint-Gobain in light and sustainable construction.
Masdar City, the hub of sustainability, was naturally selected to be the home of Al Muntada, which aims to be a net zero carbon building. As world leader in the light and sustainable construction, Saint-Gobain, which is engaged in a net-zero carbon commitment by 2050, will accelerate its growth in the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf Cooperation Council through the Al Muntada
