2024 Celebration

Every December, the Philippines bursts with vibrant celebrations honoring the art and science of architecture through the National Architecture Month. This year’s festivities were exceptionally meaningful, marking the first-ever full-scale, month-long celebration officially recognized as the Philippine Architecture Festival-National Architecture Month (PAF-NAM). This historic milestone was made possible through Presidential Proclamation No. 724, signed by His Excellency Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. on October 28, 2024, solidifying architecture’s vital role in nation-building and cultural heritage. A landmark Supreme Court decision that benefits the future generation of architects and the architectural profession.

The recent events leading up to our Golden Jubilee impel our perseverance in becoming vigilant while embracing our sacred duties and responsibilities as licensed and registered architects pursuing a higher degree of professionalism.

Last February 7, 2025, the Department of Public Works and Highways released a Memorandum Circular that reinforces the implementation of Sections 302 (3) and (4) of the National Building Code of the Philippines (PD 1096) in light of the Supreme Court’s Decision on G.R. Nos. 200015 (DPWH vs PICE and Leo Cleto Gamolo) & 205846 (UAP vs PICE and Leo Cleto Gamolo), to which finality that only architects have the exclusive right to prepare, draft, sign and seal architectural documents.

A month later, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) reiterated the DPWH’s circular across local government units in the country regarding the immediate enforcement of the effectivity of the SC decision to their constituents. In addition, together with our UAP Commission on Government and External Affairs, headed by its Executive Director, Arch. Mary Kristine “Ching” Segovia, we paid a courtesy visit to the DILG’s Office of Project Development Services to discuss this development and express our appreciation for their call to action.

Following the aforementioned measures from the highest court and the concerned government agencies, the grassroots started to adopt the promulgated decisions, with over 100 local government units taking heed in rolling out the implementation of the said decision and the DPWH Memorandum.

Similarly, the national government’s efforts to reward our contribution to nation-building and our built environment by declaring every December as “National Architecture Month” gave a more unifying spirit to the cause of the Philippine Architecture Festival that bridges craftsmanship and humanity with the help of more than 210 chapters of our beloved organization, together with our counterparts in the UAP Student and Graduate auxiliaries whom we can pass the flaming torch of our profession.

Just recently, the United Architects of the Philippines obtained our Quality Management System (QMS) through ISO 9001:2015. The UAP has passed the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Audits and established our Quality Management System Manual and Procedure Manual, paving the way for the ISO certification. Through this global standard in high-quality management, the UAP was able to attain our corporate image as part of our UAP Twelve Focus Programs to provide quality service and management to the general membership and key stakeholders.

A celebration of the United Architects of the Philippines as part of our Golden Jubilee happened in our 50th Anniversary last March 26, 2025. The UAP, through the Golden Jubilee Committee, prepared a special gathering, which included the unveiling of the UAP 50th Anniversary Marker with the theme: “Celebrating 50 Years of Unity, Advocacy and Professional Excellence”, launching of the Nationwide Tree Planting Activity; and ribbon cutting ceremonies of our UAP Museum.

That night, seasoned and esteemed architects across generations, alongside past and present leaders and LIKHA awardees, gathered over dinner at Wildflour Cafe & Restaurant in Quezon City to unfold the chronicled pages of the UAP’s latest History Book — a sequel to its first edition in 2000, which featured the first twenty-five years of its humble

beginnings amidst challenges. It eventually became a homecoming for some of the most prominent and senior members responsible for founding and establishing the home of Filipino architects.

The golden celebration of UAP continued at the SMX Convention Center to open our 50th edition of the UAP National Convention, with around 8,000+ attendees in person and online, and 50 global and local speakers to tackle issues, offering borderless knowledge and opportunities for Filipino architects in the face of rapid development in sustainability and smart innovations in architecture. In addition, we also had our International Leaders’ Forum attended by our counterpart architectleaders from abroad, which fostered transcending collaboration and exchange of ideas on making architecture more inclusive for everyone.

Likewise, our 20th Convention Exhibits (CONEX) remain more than committed to connecting the public to the built and environment industry’s most trusted brands, helping them to make informed choices for their preferred products in designing their dream structure, thanks to our top industry partners who have always been supportive of our profession.

These milestones, progressive activities, and programs are part and parcel of our Corporate thrust under the banner of FutureProgressive ONE STRONG UAP for fiscal year 2024-2025.

The future is bright for the next generation of our profession, leaping forward to what the future holds for the next five decades of the UAP. The legacy of excellence and vigilance, and gaining more trust earns more than confidence – it’s the reputation of laying out the future and building bridges of dreams with the people, confident in our ability to become a beacon of stability and foundation that stands the test of time. Thanks to our leaders in the past and present who stood with us to ensure a better tomorrow for every Filipino architect.

I extend my warmest greetings to Architect Ericson Europa and the rest of the UAP Post for its utmost duty in chronicling the best of UAP through various times, through thick and thin, from one milestone to another, history after history. This is how the spirit of our Golden Jubilee should be — greatness in gratefulness.

FutureProgressive – ONE STRONG UAP!

Mabuhay ang UAP!

Mabuhay ang Arkitektong Filipino!

UAP Celebrates Golden Jubilee

The United Architects of the Philippines celebrated its Golden Jubillee with a grand gala night held on April 8, 2025 at the Solaire Resort and Casino in Parañaque City. The momentous event with the theme “Rooted in Legacy, Branching to the Future” marked five decades of UAP’s unwavering dedication to our profession, and its profound impact on the Philippine landscape.

It was a night of recognition, reunion, and reflection for architects, honoring their contributions to shaping skylines and the future of Filipino architecture. The celebration featured a 5-course dinner, entertainment, the launch of the UAP history book, the recognition of distinguished Filipino architects, and networking opportunities. The honored guests in attendance included representatives from the PRC Board of Architecture, government officials, former UAP national presidents, UAP officers, National Convention speakers, and other prominent personalities.

The Narra-themed event signified elegance, enchantment, and excellence, fitting of a profession that continues to reimagine and reshape the nation. Aside from marking fifty years of the organization’s existence as the integrated and accredited professional organization of architects in the Philippines, it served as a reminder of the storied past of the UAP and to present the vision and the direction of the organization for the future.

The UAP Golden Anniversary Gala Night also served as venue to launch the Narra Awards, which will become a staple for the organization. The inaugural batch of 50 Notable Architects and the Gintong Likha awardees received the prestigious UAP Narra Award.

The 50 Notable Architects Shaping Filipino Spaces

From the towering skylines of Metro Manila to the serene, purposeful buildings in the provinces— and even in far corners of the world— Filipino architects are not just building structures; they are crafting narratives. With every structure, they are storytellers of space, custodians of heritage, and trailblazers in sustainability, innovation, and global design discourse.

In recognition of these contributions and in celebration of the United Architects of the Philippines’ Golden Jubilee and the 50th National Convention, the UAP honored fifty architects whose creativity, vision, and commitment to excellence have not only transformed skylines but also elevated the very soul of Filipino architecture. These are the minds behind the structures that shape our everyday lives—buildings that breathe, spaces that connect, and designs that endure.

The awardees of the 50 Notable Architects of the Philippines are as follows: Alvin Mark R. Felipe, Alvin P. Tejada, Mariano S. Arce Jr., Maria Nina B. Arce, Ardel J. Santos, Aristotle Marc T. Go, Buck Richnold I. Sia, Carmelo T. Casas, Ma. Cherrie Rose M. Cacayorin, Conrado T. Onglao, Corazon V. Fabia-Tandoc, Daniel C. Go, Daniel Vicente A. Lichauco, Edison Ching M. Padilla, Edric Marco C. Florentino, Felino A. Palafox Jr., Francis Xavier L. Santaromana, Froilan C. Robas, Gerard Rey A. Lico, Gloryrose D. Metilla, James G. Jao, James C. Olivar, Jason S. Ang, John Ryan A. Santos, and Jose B. Laraño Jr.

The Narra, the national tree of the country, represents the Filipino’s resilience, strength, and value. The general concept of the celebration was to make a wonderful evening where old friends could connect as well as honor the pillars of the organization and profession. It was intended to be simple yet elegant in a manner that only architects can make it so.

The celebration was a collaborative effort by UAP Golden Jubilee Committee Co-Chairs, Architects Royal Pineda and Dan Lichauco. According to Architect Lichauco, “The idea was to make an event and dinner that was memorable with meaning to reaffirm our commitment to the nation, organization and the profession through curated food and programs.”

Starting in November 2024, the planning was tight and fast as the organizers had basically five months to plan both the celebration at Solaire and another one at the UAP Headquarters. Fortunately, the team was able to pull everything off.

Happy with the outcome, Architect Lichauco shared, “Based on the after-event feedback, it was great to see that people had a chance to reaffirm their commitments to the organization and the profession as well as hook up with old friends and acquaintances. It was also important to note that the main sponsor Boysen Paints was extremely pleased with the event and reaffirmed its partnership and collaboration with the profession and architects. Everyone left happy.”

Borderless: NatCon Marks 50 Years of Excellence and Global Unity

In the grand tapestry of architectural history, few organizations have embodied unity, resilience, and unwavering dedication to ethical design quite like the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP). As it marks its 50th year, UAP stands as a beacon of architectural excellence and professional solidarity, continuing to champion the voice of Filipino architects across the world.

The UAP’s origins date back to 1975, when three architectural organizations—the League of Philippine Architects (LPA), the Association of Philippine Government Architects (APGA), and the Philippine Institute of Architects (PIA)—merged to form a single entity. This consolidation was more than just a merger; it was the birth of a movement that sought to elevate Filipino architects on the global stage, ensuring they had a unified voice and a platform to advocate for ethical and sustainable design.

Throughout the years, UAP has remained committed to pushing for moral and ethical contributions in architecture, emphasizing accountability not only to one’s craft but also to God, to Mother Earth, and to oneself. This philosophy has been the guiding force behind UAP’s initiatives, inspiring generations of architects to uphold integrity in every blueprint they create.

To commemorate its golden year, UAP has chosen the theme “Borderless” for its 50th National Convention—a powerful statement reflecting the organization’s limitless reach in design, advocacy, and global collaboration. Under the leadership of UAP National President Donato Magcale Jr. , Executive Director Antonio Valdez and NatCon Chair Reymark Gardiola, the theme symbolizes the interconnectedness of architects across borders, recognizing that architecture transcends physical and geographical limitations. It is an acknowledgment that good design should be universal, accessible, and impactful.

With over 8,000 architects in attendance—both physically and online—the convention was a landmark event. The General Assembly spanned six inspiring days, each dedicated to a crucial pillar of architectural practice:

Day 01: Nation Building – Exploring how architects shape national identity and development through thoughtful urban planning and design.

Day 02: Education – Highlighting the importance of architectural education and continuous learning in an ever-evolving industry.

Day 03: Future – Delving into innovations, emerging technologies, and the evolving role of architects in a rapidly changing world.

Day 04: Power of Collaboration – Emphasizing teamwork, interdisciplinary partnerships, and the strength of networking among architects worldwide.

Day 05: Blueprint to Reality – Showcasing real-world applications of visionary designs and the process of transforming concepts into tangible structures.

Day 06: Young Architects - Business of Architecture – Equipping the next generation of architects with the tools and insights to thrive in both creative and commercial aspects of the profession.

Through these sessions, the convention aimed to reinforce the idea that the impact of architecture is not confined to physical spaces alone. It is a profession that shapes societies, influences economies, and enhances the well-being of communities worldwide.

Underscoring the significance of this milestone, the UAP was honored to welcome Riken Yamamoto of Yokohama, Japan, as the Guest of Honor at the opening ceremonies. A distinguished Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, often regarded as the highest honor in architecture, Yamamoto embodies the profound impact of architectural practice across cultures and disciplines. His body of work, known for its deep sensitivity to human interaction, urban spaces, and community integration, resonates strongly with UAP’s vision of ethical and responsible design.

Yamamoto’s presence at the convention not only celebrated his achievements but also reinforced the message of “Borderless”—architecture that extends beyond physical constraints and cultural barriers to create spaces that inspire, connect, and elevate the human experience. His insights undoubtedly energized the dialogue on the future of architecture, offering Filipino architects invaluable perspectives from one of the industry’s most visionary minds.

While anniversaries serve as moments of reflection, UAP’s 50th year was not just about looking back—it was about propelling forward. As the architectural landscape evolves with advancements in technology, sustainability, and human-centered design, UAP remains committed to adapting to these changes while preserving the core values that have defined its legacy.

The organization is keen on fostering an environment where Filipino architects continue to thrive, not just within the Philippines but across the world. From advocating for stronger ethical frameworks to empowering architects through education and collaboration, UAP’s mission extends beyond its golden year—it is a lifelong pursuit of excellence, integrity, and positive global impact.

As the convention unfolded and architects gathered to discuss, share, and envision the future, one thing remained clear: the United Architects of the Philippines was not just celebrating 50 years of existence. It was celebrating 50 years of shaping minds, building communities, and redefining architecture as a force for good. And with its “Borderless” spirit, it will continue to shape the future—one blueprint at a time.

UAP Leads PAF-NAM 2024 Celebration

Every December, the Philippines bursts with vibrant celebrations honoring the art and science of architecture through the National Architecture Month. This year’s festivities were exceptionally meaningful, marking the first-ever full-scale, month-long celebration officially recognized as the Philippine Architecture Festival-National Architecture Month (PAF-NAM). This historic milestone was made possible through Presidential Proclamation No. 724, signed by His Excellency Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. on October 28, 2024, solidifying architecture’s vital role in nation-building and cultural heritage.

With the theme “Sinag ng Bahaghari: Fostering Nation-Building, Hope, and Inclusivity Through Architecture,” PAF-NAM 2024 highlighted architecture’s transformative role in shaping inclusive, resilient, and sustainable communities. This momentous event was made possible through the tireless efforts of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) through the Commission on Governmental and External Affairs and the UAP National Board of Directors (NBD) for Fiscal Year 2024-2025.

The celebration kicked off with an opening ceremony led by PAF-NAM Committee Co-Chairperson Mary Rolyn Ara Torrecampo-Angeles on December 7 at the Activity Center, 2nd Floor Estancia Mall, Pasig City. This vibrant event set the tone for a month filled with activities showcasing the dynamic contributions of Filipino architects. One of the major highlights was UAP’s participation in the Paskotitap Parade of Pasig City LGU, where architects joined the colorful festivities, blending creativity with community spirit.

Throughout the more than month-long celebration, UAP local chapters from across the Philippines and around the globe actively spearheaded diverse projects that embodied the festival’s core values. UAP local and international chapters conducted activities like community outreach programs, forums, motorcades, seminars and workshops, architectural heritage tours, design competitions, and exhibits. These initiatives demonstrated how architecture serves as a powerful tool for nation-building, fostering a sense of pride, identity, and inclusivity.

A significant addition to this year’s celebration was the Architectural Clinic, a nationwide initiative that offered free consultations, design advice, and technical expertise assistance not only in architecture but also from allied professions. This project emphasized the profession’s strong commitment to community service, bridging the gap between architectural and building industry professionals and the public. By enabling experts on this field share insights and made readily accessible, the clinic addressed real-life challenges faced by Filipino communities, empowering them with practical solutions and enhancing the quality of built environments across the country.

Professional development remained a key focus with numerous CPD (Continuing Professional Development) seminars, ensuring that architects stayed abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices. Additionally, Balangkasan forums provided platforms for thought-provoking discussions on pressing architectural and urban issues, fostering dialogue among professionals, students, and the public.

The celebration concluded with a simple closing ceremony on January 31, 2024, at the UAP National Headquarters, following the successful TARA Run LuzViMinda 2025 in Cavite, Bohol and Koronadal City which was led by PAF-NAM Committee CoChairperson Jien Carmela De Roma-Mercado, TARA Run OrCom, and host UAP chapters (Cavite Tiera Alta, Bohol and South Cotabato - Koronadal). This event symbolized unity, resilience, and the continuous pursuit of excellence among Filipino architects, uniting participants from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in a shared vision for the future.

PAF-NAM 2024 was more than just a festival; it was a nationwide and global undertaking that showcased the impact of Filipino architects beyond the drawing board. It highlighted the architects’ role as nation-builders, innovators, and community leaders. As the festival continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Filipino architects and their unwavering dedication to shaping spaces that inspire, connect, and transform lives.

The celebration also marked a significant milestone—53 years since the issuance of Presidential Proclamation No. 934 in December 1971. Over five decades later, the spirit of that proclamation lives on, stronger than ever, reflecting the enduring legacy and evolving contributions of Filipino architects to nation-building.

The TARA Run LuzViMinda 2025 unites participants from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
UAP Tarlac Chapter and UAP Student Auxiliary of Tarlac State University stage “PRISMA: Pride of Architectural Artistry.”

The celebration of PAF-NAM kicks off with the unveiling of the Presidential Proclamation No. 724 s. 2024 at Estancia Mall.

Drawing the Line: Supreme Court Seals Architects’ Victory

Over Engineers

In a landmark decision that reshapes the professional boundaries between architects and civil engineers in the Philippines, the Supreme Court has ruled that only registered and licensed architects are authorized to prepare, sign, and seal architectural documents. This ruling, issued on March 15, 2023, and affirmed with finality on October 30, 2024, resolves a protracted legal dispute involving the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) against the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) and Leo Cleto Gamolo. The decision was subsequently published and received on January 15, 2025.

The dispute centers on Sections 302(3) and 302(4) of the 2004 Revised Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the National Building Code (Presidential Decree No. 1096). These sections require that certain architectural documents must be prepared, signed, and sealed exclusively by licensed architects. PICE and Engr. Gamolo challenged these sections, arguing that they infringed upon civil engineers’ rights under Republic Act No. 544 (the Civil Engineering Law) and the National Building Code, which they interpreted as allowing civil engineers to undertake such tasks.

The Regional Trial Court (RTC) of Manila initially upheld the IRR provisions in 2008, dismissing the petition by PICE and Engr. Gamolo. However, in 2012, the Court of Appeals reversed this decision, declaring the provisions void and affirming the civil engineers’ rights to prepare, sign, and seal the specified documents. This reversal led the DPWH and UAP to bring the matter before the Supreme Court.

On March 15, 2023, the Supreme Court reinstated the RTC’s ruling. The SC emphasized that the Architecture Act of 2004 (Republic Act No. 9266) had effectively repealed any conflicting provisions in the Civil Engineering Law. The Court made clear that RA 9266 explicitly grants architects the exclusive authority over architectural documents, stating that “all architectural plans, designs, specifications, drawings, and architectural documents relative to the construction of a building shall bear the seal and signature only of a registered and licensed architect”.

The Court also addressed discrepancies in the versions of the National Building Code, noting that the official version published in the Official Gazette is the controlling document. This version does not include any provision that allow civil engineers to prepare and sign architectural documents, further supporting the exclusivity granted to architects under RA 9266.

On October 30, 2024, the Supreme Court denied with finality the motion for reconsideration filed by PICE and Engr. Gamolo, stating that the issues raised had been thoroughly considered and resolved in the March 2023 decision. The Court also denied a subsequent motion to refer the case to the Supreme Court En Banc, citing procedural rules that prevent such appeals from decisions of a Division.

This definitive ruling delineates the professional responsibilities of architects and civil engineers, clarifying that the preparation, signing, and sealing of architectural documents are tasks reserved exclusively for licensed architects. The decision underscores the importance of adhering to the specific scopes of practice defined by law, ensuring that both professionals operate within their areas of expertise to maintain the integrity and safety of building designs. It also serves as a precedent, guiding any revision or clarification of the regulatory guidelines, project implementation processes, and professional liability considerations.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the DPWH issued Memorandum Circular No. 01, Series of 2025, directing all concerned parties to comply with the ruling and reinforcing the exclusive role of architects in handling architectural documents.

With this ruling, the Supreme Court has clearly drawn the line in the sand – establishing a definitive boundary between the roles of architects and civil engineers. Architects now possess unequivocal authority to prepare, sign, and seal architectural documents, securing not only their professional standing but also the quality, safety, and integrity of built environments throughout the nation.

Deepest gratitude and recognition to all those who steadfastly supported UAP throughout this long and challenging legal journey. This landmark victory is not just a legal triumph but a testament to the unwavering dedication, unity, and professionalism demonstrated by our members and allies. Congratulations to all architects—this achievement marks a significant milestone for our profession and sets a clear path for future excellence!

Enduring Legacies: Honoring the EUAP Members

The classical order of columns, St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, or the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros— these architectural marvels, among others, symbolize the enduring nature of great achievements. Just as these structures stand the test of time, so too do the legacies of those behind their creation. These distinguished individuals, known for dedicating their lives to creating a lasting impact in architecture, are rightfully recognized— we give them the honorary title of “Emeritus.”

In today’s context, the term “Emeritus” refers to a highly-respected individual who has served the board of an organization for a significant period of time. In the context of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), however, the title Member Emeritus (EUAP) was first bestowed upon the first 100 charter members and was eventually granted to UAP members who have served for at least 35 years— a practice that continues to this day.

At the recently concluded UAP National Convention, the number of EUAP members rose from 234 to 398, with 164 new members coming from 56 chapters across the globe. The Manila Maharlika Chapter brought in the most members with 11, while the Manila Maynilad Chapter and the Manila Metro Chapter followed close behind with 10 each.

The rest of the UAP Members Emeritus hailed from the following chapters: Pangasinan Magnayon, Pangasinan Scale, La Union, Baguio City, Isabela Sierra Madre-Amianan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija-Malaya, Angeles City, Quezon City, QC South Triangle, Camanava AB-Bantayog, QC Elliptical, Diliman, California 116, Pasig, Bagumbayan, Marikina Valley, Southern California, San Juan Mandaluyong, Rizal Taytay, Greenhills, Rizal East, Oman, Manila Centrum, Manila Sta. Technocon 2025: A National Milestone in Merging Architecture and Technology

On March 29, 2025, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) successfully held Technocon 2025 with the groundbreaking theme “FUTURENEXUS: Shaping the Future of Architecture Through Advanced Technologies.” This momentous event gathered architects, allied professionals, students, and government officials from across the country, uniting in a hybrid, multi-location format that spanned the UAP National Headquarters, Bicol, Vigan, Cebu, Koronadal, and online platforms.

Organized by the Committee on Information and Technology under the Commission on Internal Affairs, Technocon 2025 exemplified the integration of digital innovation within the architectural field, not just in theory but in practice—through its simultaneous nationwide broadcast and interactive online participation. This technological execution mirrored the event’s core message: the future of architecture is digital, inclusive, and interconnected.

The day-long event began with a formal opening program featuring the UAP March, National Anthem, Architect’s Credo, and welcome remarks by Executive Director of the UAP Commission on Internal Affairs Alfred Geoffrey Carandang. National President Donato Magcale and National Executive Vice President Annie Pugeda set the tone for the day with their inspiring addresses, emphasizing the relevance of technological adaptation in the architectural profession.

The keynote address was delivered by Arch. Daniel Vicente Lichauco, Principal Managing Partner at Archion Architects. In his session, titled “Staying Relevant and Competitive Amidst the New Technologies,” he urged practitioners to embrace change and future-proof their practice by integrating digital tools, data, and smart systems into architectural design and planning.

The program featured a rich lineup of resource speakers from different regions, each contributing unique perspectives on how technology transforms their local architectural practices:

• Mr. Christian Valeen Chiu from Koronadal presented “Smart City: The Underground Backbone of Progress of the City of Koronadal,” highlighting infrastructure innovation and urban digital integration.

• Arch. Ana Lorilla from Bicol focused on “Cultural Preservation Through Technology: Bridging the Past with the Future,” showcasing the power of technology in heritage conservation.

• Arch. Emil Antonio Ong from Cebu spoke on “MICRONARRATIVES: The Elements of Downtown Cebu Architecture, Digital Twins and Cultural Heritage Preservation,” blending storytelling and digital modeling.

• Arch. Enp. Fatima Nicetas Rabang-Alonzo from Vigan wrapped up the speaker series with “Disaster Risk Assessment for the World Heritage City of Vigan,” merging environmental resilience and digital tools in heritage protection.

Panel discussions, certificate awards, interactive segments, and a closing program hosted by Arch. Ronald Buenaflor, Chairperson of the Committee on Information and Technology, capped off the event, followed by a game to engage the attendees.

Technocon 2025 proved to be a resounding success, not just in turnout but in impact. By harnessing advanced technologies in event execution and discussion topics, it demonstrated the tangible benefits of innovation in architectural practice. For professionals and students alike, the event provided new insights, tools, and inspiration to evolve with the times. It reinforced the importance of continuous learning and digital integration—paving the way for a future-ready architectural community.

Leyte Hosts UAP JACA 2025

The United Architects of the Philippines Joint Area C Assembly or UAP JACA was held on February 7 to 8, 2025 at the Grand Ballroom of the Tropics Hotel & Resort, Mac Arthur Park, Palo, Leyte. This year’s JACA had the theme: “Kusog Han Pagkakaurusa,” which means strength in unity. The assembly is considered as biggest gathering of UAP members in the whole Visayas Region or the entire UAP Area C.

The event started on Day 0, February 6, with the Arkilympics. It featured various sports competitions with the winners representing Area C during the UAP NatCon50 Arkilympics. Featuring basketball, badminton, billiards, and darts, the occasion promoted sportsmanship and physical fitness among the participants, as well as enhanced camaraderie and fellowship.

The assembly proper began the following day, Day 1 with the Area C Chapter Presidents & Officers Meeting. Presided by Area C Vice President Joel Jao and assisted by the four district directors: Arch. Leartes Tabotabo of C1, Arch. Jonathan Iral of C2, Arch. Richard Loso of C3, and Arch. Regina Falconite of C4, the meeting addressed some issues and concerns raised by the delegates.

The Opening of Exhibit and General Assembly followed, with Provincial Tourism Consultant for the Province of Leyte and former Municipal Mayor of Palo, Leyte, Hon. Anne Petilla as the guest of honor. A highlight of the occasion was the cultural dance presentation by the Leyte Samleyaw showcasing the Waray-Waray culture. The talks of the guest of honor and UAP National President Donato Magcale preceded the CPD seminars.

The first speaker was a Past National President Don De Guzman, who shared his thoughts on “The Architect as the Master of Hospitality Design.” This was followed by Area A Vice President Jonathan Manalad, who discussed about “The Power of Unity: Ethical Leadership in Architecture.” An open forum followed right after the talks of both speakers. A Welcome Dinner concluded Day 01.

CPD Seminars continued on Day 02, February 8. The speakers were Commission on Internal Affairs Executive Director Alfred Carandang, past Chancellor of the College of Fellows James Jao, National Treasurer Ritchie Tumambing, and UAP Past National President Benjamin Panganiban, with their topics: “Kabahayan @ Kabuhayan,” “Does Size Matter,” “The Art of Public Speaking,” and “The Supreme Court’s Decision on RA 9266,” respectively. There was a very lively discussion and exchange of ideas during the open forum. Delegates were all delighted with the different topics during the CPD Seminars, which they found to be timely and relevant.

After the exciting CPD talks, the Historical Tour followed. Six historical sites were the highlight of the tour. These were the following: the MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park, Yolanda Shipwreck Memorial Park, the Leyte Provincial Capitol Building, the Sto. Niño Shrine, the San Juanico Bridge, and the Leyte People Center & Library Building. The tour was indeed a very informative and educational activity, especially for those delegates who were first timers in the province of Leyte.

The delegates returned to their respective hotels following the Historical Tour to prepare for the most awaited culmination of the UAP JACA event, the fellowship night or the “Davies Night” with the theme, “Black Gold in Denim.”

The party started with the Battle of the Band. Dinner followed with various kinds of drinks to be relished by the delegates at the open bar which featured the famous local Waray-Waray red wine, the tuba. It was served with certain flavors to make it more tasty and classy. A live band also performed during the informal gathering, while the architects enjoyed the fellowship with other delegates. The singing and the dancing, as well as the raffle draws spiced the evening with so many surprises which excited all the participants.

Indeed, the assembly was another UAP event to remember. The delegates will surely never forget that once upon a time in February 2025, they were in Leyte attending the UAP JACA 2025 and they will always talk about the great things done, the memories created, the people they met, and the places they visited there.

Vigilance Amid the Celebration

The United Architects of the Philippines celebrated its Golden Jubilee with a series of events. Starting with the kick-off on March 22, 2024 in Cebu City for the yearlong countdown, the celebration culminated with the grand gala night held on April 8, 2025 at the Solaire Resort and Casino.

Indeed, the culmination event was a night to remember marking five decades of UAP’s unwavering dedication to the architecture profession and its great contribution to the built environment which has brought profound impact on the ever-changing Philippine landscape.

It was a night replete with elegance, enchantment, and excellence. The black and gold outfits of the attendees perfectly matched the elegant ambiance of the Narra-themed ballroom. The five course dinner excellently matched the recognition bestowed to the inaugural batch of 50 Notable Architects and the Gintong Likha awardees, who received the prestigious UAP Narra Award.

But amid all the celebration, it is imperative that architects should remain cautious and heedful. With the Supreme Court deciding with finality that only registered and licensed architects may prepare, sign, and seal architectural documents, we should not let our guards down. Rather, we should remain vigilant against illegal practitioners and police our fellow architects who are engaging in the unlawful signing and sealing of architectural documents prepared by unauthorized persons.

The architects have waited for almost two decades since the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers and Leo Cleto Gamolo challenged Sections 302(3) and 302(4) of the 2004 IRR of the National Building Code that certain architectural documents must be prepared, signed, and sealed exclusively by licensed architects. Now, the final decision is definitely on our side.

A perfect gift definitely to the Filipino architects and to the UAP on its jubilee year. Let us not permit this landmark victory slip from our hands.

UAP Cagayan Valley

Brings Joy to Barangay with Project Ragsak

In celebration of the Philippine Architecture Festival – National Architecture Month, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Cagayan Valley Chapter, in collaboration with Pugad Lawin Philippines Inc.Tuguegarao Chapter and Dentista Nina Juan, successfully conducted an outreach program titled Project Ragsak: Painting Smiles, Building Happy Memories on December 14, 2024. The event was held in Barangay Padul, a remote community in Solana, Cagayan, bringing joy to 150 children through thoughtful activities and generous donations.

“Ragsak,” an Ilocano word meaning “joy,” perfectly encapsulates the essence of the event - uplifting spirits and creating happy memories for the children of Barangay Padul. This initiative serves as a testament to the vital role of architects in fostering social responsibility and highlights the impact of collaboration between various organizations in achieving meaningful community goals.

The UAP Cagayan Valley Chapter, led by Chapter President Jam April Furigay, distributed Jollimeals and Jollitoys, bringing smiles to the young participants. Pugad Lawin Tuguegarao, under the leadership of its president, Arch. Rolando Diwa contributed used clothes, organized engaging games, and facilitated adult flu vaccinations. Meanwhile, Dentista Nina Juan, represented by one of its owners, Mr. Jose Chrisanto Lasam, taught the kids proper tooth-brushing techniques and distributed dental kits to promote oral hygiene. The highlight of the day was the special appearance of the Jollibee mascot, which brought excitement and laughter to the children.

UAP Cagayan Valley Chapter is truly grateful to Pugad Lawin sa Tuguegarao 1993, Dentista Nina Juan - SM Center Tuguegarao Downtown, the Barangay Captain and Council of Barangay Padul, the Padul Elementary School teachers, United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary - Cagayan State University Carig Campus, and United Architects of the Philippines Graduate Auxiliary Cagayan Valley Chapter for their invaluable support in making the event a success. Through collaborative efforts, Project Ragsak brought the community joy, health, and lasting memories.

“Is Modern Heritage Worth Saving?”

The UAP Diliman Chapter kicked off the National Architecture Month celebrations with a Balangkasan held in the UP College of Architecture, Diliman, Quezon City on December 7, 2024. Posing the question, “Is Modern Heritage Worth Saving?” esteemed heritage experts delved not only on the merits of heritage conservation, but more importantly, the reality that though modern heritage structures are architectural gems, they must still pass heritage conservation parameters.

The foremost conclusion to be drawn from this Balangkasan is that there are no assumptions to be made about heritage. Information about heritage structures will inadvertently be incomplete and may be based on personal biases and sentimentality. To get the full picture, heritage advocates and professionals need to be in constant dialogue with the very people who deal with the structures - property owners, the local government, everyday men and women who interact with these spaces.

To round off the debate, Prof. Leonido Jun Gines Jr. gave his five pointers when deciding on the hotly-debated Balangkasan question:

• Consider how the paradoxical backdrop of modernism’s drive for change revolves around colonialism, capitalism, fascism and other authoritarian ideologies.

• Recall that modern architecture’s attitude was anti-tradition of architectural history (i.e., Classicist) and that to consider modern architecture as heritage is ironic considering it was anti-history.

• How we view and choose cultural values for and authenticity in modern architecture must also consider our own local acceptance of modernism compared with other modernisms elsewhere.

• Sustaining the preservation of modernist architecture in the Philippines will be highly dependent on how the heritage law will adapt to the future.

• We continue the experimentation driven by the modernist attitude towards technology or tech-based future of architecture.

This incredibly informative Balangkasan event was an incredible collaboration in celebration of National Architecture Month. This activity also received the coveted Meritorious Award, “Best Balankasan” in the UAP Awards Night held last April 7, 2025 during the 50th National Convention.

UAP Bataan Peninsulares Chapter Celebrates PAF-NAM

In a spirited show of teamwork and creativity, the United Architects of the Philippines Bataan Peninsulares Chapter, in collaboration with local organizations, hosted the “Sinag ng Bahaghari” program from November 30 to December 1, 2024. This two-day event celebrated the Philippine Architecture Festival and National Architecture Month, highlighting how important architecture is in building communities.

The event began with a colorful motorcade, leading to an opening ceremony and the unveiling of exhibits. Local architects and community members gathered to honor their shared dedication to innovation and inclusivity in architecture.

Participants had the chance to receive free design consultations from experienced architects, offering them valuable advice and tips for their construction and renovation projects. This interaction showcased the strong connection between architects and the people they serve.

At the same time, a training seminar took place at Villa Amanda Resort & Restaurant in Abucay, Bataan. The seminar was designed to help architects enhance their skills by combining design knowledge with key business strategies.

The excitement carried on into the second day with an Architect’s Works Exhibit held at SM City Bataan in Balanga City, Bataan. Visitors enjoyed more free consultations and had the opportunity to see the amazing works of Bataan’s architects. The exhibit celebrated not only individual creativity but also the collaboration within the local architectural community.

“One of our goals with the Sinag ng Bahaghari program is to connect architects with the public and highlight the essential role architecture plays in improving our communities and creating beautiful, sustainable spaces,” said one of the event organizers.

Brushes of Joy: A Legacy in Every Hue

Last January 29, 2025, the UAP Tarlac Chapter, in collaboration with UAPGA Tarlac Chapter, demonstrated once again the sincere role of architects and architecture students beyond studio labs and construction sites by engaging in a meaningful CSR activity at San Clemente Heroes’ Park and Children’s Playground, in San Clemente, Tarlac. This activity highlighted the chapter’s initiative in restoring and reviving public spaces.

In a joint effort powered by volunteerism and a deep sense of commitment to civic duty, UAP Tarlac spearheaded a clean up drive, and a creative painting activity of the fence at one of the local parks and playgrounds in San Clemente, Tarlac. This event drew participation from 19 seasoned professionals and enthusiastic architecture students, demonstrating how intergenerational collaboration can breathe new life into the community.

The once weathered perimeter fence has now become a canvas of vibrant colors and imagery of hope – thanks to the collective artistry and passion of the members and

student leaders. The artworks painted on the fence were not just decorative elements as they also served as visual representations of celebrated childhood, unity, and environmental stewardship.

As UAP Tarlac’s ongoing advocacy for uplifting community spaces and promoting sustainability and inclusivity at the grassroots level, this initiative reflects one of the chapter’s main goals. Local parks and playgrounds do not just serve as recreational grounds. They are communal infrastructures that shape the formative experiences of the children, as well as the social fabric and culture of the community. And as architects, we strongly believe that by nurturing these spaces, we practice our care and creativity in the community.

Our heartfelt gratitude to all UAP members and UAPSA members who rolled up their sleeves, shared their talents and made time for this noble endeavor. Our project may be a small gesture in the broader scope of nation- building, but it is in these small acts of bayanihan where the foundation of a better Tarlac is laid.

UAP Diliman Spearheads Valenzuela Heritage Tour

The UAP Diliman Chapter organized the Valenzuela heritage tour on December 14, 2024 with the objective of exploring the efforts of the local government in creating a vibrant city transformed by arts and cultural facilities and public spaces.

Upon the invitation of the UAP Area A and District A4 leadership, the chapter also spearheaded the search for a heritage structure within the district that epitomizes the Malasakit Program initiative. The Museo ni Dr. Pio Valenzuela undoubtedly highlights the history of the city as it was lived out by the national hero Dr. Pio Valenzuela.

The Museo ni Dr. Pio Valenzuela is an exceptional heritage structure that has been restored using a hybrid approach, capturing both the tangible and intangible aspects of buildings to arrive at a holistic approach to conservation. The design team tasked with its renovation and re-imagination, headed by Arch. Gerard Lico, revived and conserved the pre-war bahay na bato home of Dr. Valenzuela by commemorating enduring memories of the past. This heritage structure keeps the story of the national hero alive, and does so through thoughtful and creative storytelling, exemplified in every space within the family home. It reflects not only the story of Valenzuela City, but more importantly, the Filipino people’s identity and values.

This district activity underscores the Malasakit Program initiative of empowering UAP members through dedicated programs that cultivate values formation, promote cultural appreciate, and elevate competency in the profession. The unveiling of the UAP marker underscores the significance of this structure as a permanent tribute to its enduring legacy and a reminder of the important role it plays in the Filipinos’ collective heritage.

More than 50 architects from the 8 chapters of Regional District A4 joined the tour, eager to see and learn more about Valenzuela. The participants were truly thankful to the leadership of Valenzuela City, especially its Tourism Board, for welcoming the architects to the city. They definitely learned much about the city’s efforts to raise awareness about heritage and are looking forward to many museum projects in the pipeline.

Three Decades Strong: UAP Rizal East Chapter’s 30th Anniversary Celebration

UAP Rizal East Chapter celebrated its 30th anniversary last November 30, 2024, at First Pacific Leadership Academy in Antipolo City with the theme “Elevate and Empower.” In her opening remarks, Chapter President Ruiza Anne April Diestro highlighted how it perfectly captures the essence of what it means to be an architect in today’s everevolving world. To elevate is to aim for higher standards of design and service, and to empower is to inspire and enable our peers, the communities we serve, and the next generation of architects.

This momentous occasion was marked by the presence of UAP National President Donato Magcale, District A5 Director Rex Chua Tak, Hon. Mia Ynares, Representative of the 1st District of Rizal, and the guest of honor, Arch. Felino “Jun” Palafox, Jr. The event was also attended by Arch. Maria Carmen Yatco, Chairman of UAP Special Committee on Bamboo Projects, and its Vice-Chair, Arch. Ronie Biando.

The deep appreciation for the chapter’s milestone was reflected by the recognition of outstanding members who have made significant contributions to the chapter and the profession. The Awards Committee, headed by Arch. Sheila Beltran, presented awards to selected individuals who have shown exceptional dedication and leadership: Arch. Elias Pernecita, Jr. (Outstanding Member for Arts and Literature), Arch. Carlota Tiburcio (Outstanding Member for Project Management), Arch. Darwin Tiburcio (Outstanding Member for Design-Build), Arch. Ernie Popes (Outstanding Member for Education), Arch. Ariel Endaya (Outstanding Member for Architectural Practice), Arch. Ariel Serrana (Outstanding New Member), Arch. Jesus Chua (Solomon S. Miranda Award for Service), and Arch. Rowell Reyes (Andres B. Dallarte Memorial Award for Leadership). The chapter also took the opportunity to acknowledge its founding members and past chapter presidents whose vision and commitment laid the foundation for the chapter’s success.

To cap off the anniversary celebration, a 7-day exhibition of the notable works of the chapter members was held at SM Center Angono. Opened on December 1 to mark the simultaneous celebration of the Philippine Architecture Festival - National Architecture Month, it highlighted a remarkable collection of architectural works from the chapter members.

UAP Lipa Launches Brush of Hope

On December 2, 2024, in celebration of the Philippine Architecture Festival (PAF) and National Architecture Month (NAM), the UAP Lipa Chapter, under the leadership of Chapter President Florante Pendon, launched its PAF-NAM kickoff project, Brush of Hope.

The UAP Lipa Chapter has been a strong advocate of SOS Children’s Village since 2022, when it was then led by Chapter President Mariethel Matabang. Every December, the Chapter focuses on gift-giving and initiatives aimed at making the Christmas season more meaningful for the surrounding community.

According to Arch. Pendon, the idea for the Brush of Hope project came about in December 2024, after their annual Gift Giving program. While touring the village, the officers noticed that the houses were badly in need of a fresh coat of paint, making the environment look dull. This observation sparked the idea to repaint the houses, with the goal of brightening the community where the children live.

With his vision for his term to #ELEV8, Arch. Pendon, along with his officers and Board of Directors, carefully planned the Brush of Hope project and partnered with Boysen Paints Philippines. The initiative focused on repainting House No.1 of the SOS Children’s Village. As Arch. Pendon explained, the objective was to instill a sense of hope in the children by transforming their environment by using quality paints. By creating a vibrant and inspiring space, the architects believe they can provide a joyful and uplifting atmosphere, helping to foster a renewed sense of hope and encouraging the children to strive for a better future.

The project’s launch was attended by Mr. Ryan Caringal, a representative from Boysen Paints, as well as Chapter President Pendon, Chapter Secretary Jovilyn Tan, Chapter Treasurer Ian Carlo Umali, Chapter Auditor Augusto Sison, and Chapter Directors Karissa Magnaye, Vhenggo Olan, and Jen Magsino. Together, they helped make a difference, one brushstroke at a time.

When Architecture Becomes a Blessing to Others

On December 20, 2024, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Cavite Chapter extended its compassion and commitment beyond the drawing board through its heartfelt Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative titled “BUILD BACK BLESSED.”

Held in Bgy. Malagasang, City of Imus, this event was a convergence of faith, purpose, and professional service aimed at supporting the construction of the church office of the Mary Mother of God Parish.

“BUILD BACK BLESSED” was more than just a donation drive, it was a bayanihan movement fuelled by architecture and advocacy. The campaign focused on mobilizing building materials, resources, and manpower pledges from architects, allied professionals, and partner organizations, all unified by a mission to serve the community through sustainable and dignified structures.

During the turnover ceremony, members of UAP Cavite Chapter personally handed over the pledged materials to Rev. Fr. Melencio ‘Mel’ Sandoval. The activity not only embodied the architectural value of building spaces but also echoed the spiritual value of building lives, offering an ample space that will soon serve as a home for pastoral work, mission outreach and administrative services of the parish.

This initiative highlighted the chapter’s enduring theme, “Leading Legacies, Optimizing Yielded Diversities,”which focuses on designing with empathy, planning with purpose, and building with faith. It reinforced the role of architects not just as designers of spaces, but as partners in nation-building, answering the call of service through our profession.

As the Mary Mother of God Parish moves forward in building its church office, the legacy of BUILD BACK BLESSED stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, community, and the generosity of the UAP Cavite Chapter where architecture becomes both a gift and a blessing.

Christmas For All: Gift Giving at Lipa City Jail

A first-of-its-kind initiative for the UAP Lipa Chapter, Christmas For All: Gift Giving was organized on December 20, 2024 in line with the PAF-NAM celebration. Under the leadership of Chapter President Florante Pendon, and with the support of Project Chair Ireneo Adaya Jr. (Director for Professional Practice), UAP Lipa Chapter made a meaningful visit to the female PDLs (Persons Deprived of Liberty) at the Lipa City Jail Female Dormitory just before Christmas, bringing a heartfelt gift-giving experience.

The initiative underscored the importance of fostering hope and inclusivity for nationbuilding, offering hope to the inmates and reminding them that, regardless of past mistakes, everyone deserves a helping hand and a second chance—one that can inspire a sense of belonging and contribute to their personal growth. UAP Lipa aimed to go beyond the stereotypes often associated with city jails and inmates, focusing instead on spreading the Christmas spirit to individuals, including those deprived of their freedom, by offering kindness without judgment. According to Arch. Pendon, during the planning stages, they recognized that while many charity events are held during Christmas, those who are deprived of their freedom are often overlooked due to the negative stereotypes surrounding city jails. This realization motivated the chapter even more to extend their help to the PDLs.

The UAP Lipa Chapter was able to provide each female PDL with toiletries and snacks. The event would not have been possible without the warm assistance of the Lipa City Jail personnel, the dedicated UAP Lipa members and officers who contributed to the cause, and the generous sponsors who continuously support their programs. As the chapter firmly believes that a simple act of kindness can light up even the darkest places.

UAP Palawan Chapter

Gives Assistance to Flood-Affected Families

In line with its commitment to uphold the core values of service, integrity, and compassion, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Palawan Chapter conducted a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity to aid families affected by recent flooding in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The community outreach was held in response to the aftermath of continuous heavy rainfall brought about by a shear line weather disturbance, which caused flooding in several low-lying areas in the city. Among the most affected was Barangay BancaoBancao, where more than one hundred families experienced displacement, property damage, and loss of basic necessities.

The relief goods donation was held on February 15, 2025 at one of the designated evacuation centers in the barangay. Mobilizing its members and resources, the UAP Palawan Chapter organized the procurement and distribution of relief packs composed of essential food items, bottled water, and hygiene supplies.

This activity was made possible through the support and participation of fellow architects from the UAP San Pablo Chapter who extended their assistance and solidarity for this humanitarian cause and UAP Graduate Auxiliary Palawan Chapter for aiding in packing the relief goods for this activity. The initiative was coordinated closely with barangay officials to ensure the efficient and equitable distribution of aid to the affected households.

This outreach embodies the chapter’s advocacy of being not only architects of spaces but also architects of community resilience and compassion. Further, through this effort, it hopes to ease the burden of those impacted by the flooding and demonstrate the profession’s collective commitment to public service.

The UAP Palawan Chapter remains steadfast in its mission to serve not only through professional excellence but also through meaningful acts of social relevance and humanitarian support.

UAP Manila Corinthian Chapter Explores Manila’s Heritage

On February 22, 2025, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Manila Corinthian Chapter successfully launched the “Corinthian KKK: Educational Tour Series - Take Me Back In Your Arms, MANILA - The Manila City Hall and Clock Tower.” The event, held in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts of Manila (DTCAM), aimed to promote awareness of heritage, culture, and arts, while commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Manila and celebrating National Arts Month.

The tour was attended by the Manila Corinthian Board of Directors, led by Chapter President Adrian Michael Katipunan, along with VP for Programs & Development Christian John Moniño, Chapter Treasurer Karl Vincent Santos, Chapter Auditor Marshal Zeus Miranda, and Past District B2 Director & Past Chapter President Gabriel Maria Angelo Cascante. Architecture students from National University also participated, enriching their understanding of Manila’s historic structures.

Guided by Museum Curator Ms. Annielyn Moises, Tour Guide Mr. Carlos Garces, and Tourist Receptionist Mr. Emmanuel Lucas, the tour began with a historical discussion on the Battle of Manila on the first floor of the Clock Tower, led by Mr. Garces. Ms. Moises guided participants through floors 2 to 5, highlighting the mechanical gears and inner workings of the century-old clock. Mr. Lucas led the final tour of Manila City Hall Grounds, Kartilya ng Katipunan, and Arroceros Park, culminating at the viewing deck facing Pasig River.

In his closing remarks, Arch. Katipunan emphasized the tour as the first step in a partnership with DTCAM. The next phase includes an Architectural Photography Workshop by Manila City Hall Architect Froilan Robas, followed by an architectural photography competition, with selected entries to be displayed at the Manila Clock Tower, pending approval by DTCAM Director Charlie Dungo.

This initiative underscores UAP Manila Corinthian Chapter’s commitment to heritage conservation and architectural appreciation, inspiring architects and students to engage in Manila’s rich history.

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Las Piñas Luntian Chapter and the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary (UAPSA) of De La Salle University - Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) have taken a significant step toward community engagement and cultural empowerment. Last February 2, 2025, through the NEXUS Re:Connect APEX 2025 program, the organizations have crossed rivers and hiked mountains going to the Dumagat-Remontado Indigenous People (IP) tribe of Brgy. Daraitan in Tanay, Rizal for an immersive Woodwork and Painting Workshop aimed at skill development and cultural exchange. Known as the guardians of nature and culture, the DumagatRemontado tribe is one of the indigenous groups in the Philippines known for their deep connection with nature and their resilient way of life. They primarily inhabit the mountainous area in Brgy. Daraitan, where they still maintain their rich cultural traditions despite the challenges of modernization.

Bridging communities through skill development, the initiative brought together twenty families from the Dumagat-Remontado community, offering them a hands-on learning experience in woodworking and painting. This collaborative effort not only introduced new skills to the locals but also fostered self-sufficiency and sustainable livelihood opportunities. More than just a workshop, APEX 2025 is about exposure, empowerment, and engagement. This serves as a bridge between diverse cultures, fostering deeper connections and mutual understanding. Volunteers and community members alike had the opportunity to share experiences, learn from one another, and cultivate relationships that extend beyond the event itself.

By bringing together professional architects, student leaders, and the DumagatRemontado tribe, APEX 2025 strengthens the link between modern architectural practices and indigenous craftsmanship, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and collaboration in building a more interconnected and empowered society.

This partnership stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives, proving that architecture and design can be meaningful tools for social impact, growth, and cultural preservation.

The Bacolod Azucar Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines, together with the University of the Philippines College of Architecture and the design studio, ARC LICO, held a two-day seminar on “The Fundamentals of Conservation Management Planning” last November 29 and 30, 2024 at the Acacia Hotel Bacolod in Bacolod City.

Led by Arch. Gerard Rey Lico, renown specialist and consultant in Heritage Conservation, the seminar attracted ninety participants, primarily architects from Bacolod City, who gained a thorough understanding of conservation management planning. The program combined lectures with on-site assessments, enabling attendees to learn the crucial steps for developing and implementing effective conservation management plans applicable to various projects in Bacolod City.

On the first day, participants listened to the lecture of Arch. Lico. They were organized into groups and visited the San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod City, where they engaged in hands-on activities to gather information for a comprehensive management plan. This included site documentation and an analysis of potential conservation strategies.

The second day involved a trip to Silay City, where participants applied their acquired knowledge to assess the Gerardo Sigaton Gaston Ancestral House. They compared conservation policies and identified common strategies and approaches. The custodians and stakeholders of the ancestral house were enthusiastic about the participants’ insights, as they are also seeking guidance on how to initiate restoration efforts for their heritage site.

The seminar concluded with each group presenting their drafted conservation management plans, which will be submitted to the stakeholders as part of the seminar’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility. Joining Arch. Lico at the seminar was Mr. Solomon Locsin, the current Chairman of the Negros Occidental Historical Council. He delivered a one-hour presentation focused on the historical and cultural context of Negros Occidental.

District C1 Chapters Collaborate for Data-Driven Design Talk

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Cebu, Sugbu, Bohol, and Bohol Pres. Garcia Chapters collaborated and co-organized a seminar and workshop entitled “Data-Driven Design: Integrating Software Innovations for Effective Architectural Solutions” at Metrocentre Hotel and Convention Center, Tagbilaran City. Through this CPD event, participants explored emerging architectural tools and software, learned how to integrate GIS for data mapping, and understood the significance of data-driven design in enhancing project outcomes.

On March 15, 2025, the first day, the event kicked off with two topics. To discuss Building Information Modeling (BIM), Arch. Joshua Tabasuarez demonstrated the potential of using software such as Autodesk, Revit, and Enscape. In the afternoon, Arch. Robert Malayao discussed Thermal Analysis for Sustainable Retrofitting through the use of a basic Microsoft Excel program to compute the thermal comfort of an interior space according to specified materials. On March 16, 2025, the second day, Arch. Roy Vincent Trani demonstrated basics in Geographic Information System (GIS) using the Q-GIS Software.

Having the workshops in conjunction with the seminars was an ideal approach to facilitate a successful learning outcome for the participants. These workshops were highly-interactive, creating a conducive learning atmosphere for all. The participants tackled the exercises through a guided mentorship with each of the speakers, who encouraged questions, intellectual discussions, and the sharing of ideas.

During the open forum, each of the speakers gave more practical tips when using the software for architectural practice. The forum also sparked a discourse on how architects can convince the allied professionals to shift to more advanced applications and programs in their workflows. Arch. Tabasuarez mentioned that incorporating newer software into the practice of architecture is a responsibility that falls heavily on the academe. He opened up about the collective efforts made at the University of San Carlos, wherein they have partnered with an architect who also teaches civil engineering students in order to push for the use of these more advanced programs.

By the end of the weekend, the attendees were able to apply innovative software solutions and techniques to improve their architectural practices, fostering more informed decision-making and sustainable design solutions. Participants were also able to earn a total of 6.0 CPD points.

Tuki-Tuki is the Key

What better way to promote architectural practice than by simply spreading awareness? Capitalizing on the advantages of the digital age, the Cebu Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines, headed by Chapter President Carmel Lastimoso, successfully unveiled its latest initiative, “TUKI-TUKI: Disenyo ug Konstruksyon Pagahisgutan” via an online media launch last February 22, 2025.

Derived from the Bisaya word “tuki-on,” which means “to discuss or examine,” it aims to unlock design and construction-related issues through a series of mini-episodes (812 minutes). Not only are the topics curated based on relevance, but they were also simplified, so even the common people can quickly understand them. By bridging the gap between industry professionals and the general public, a community of wellinformed individuals is within reach.

The event kicked off with the pilot episode entitled, “Importansya sa Pag-konsulta ug mga Propesyonal sa Pag-design ug sa Konstruksyon” (Importance in Consulting Professionals in Design and Construction). It featured one of UAP Cebu Chapter’s long-time member, Arch. Jesse Amarga, Founder and Principal Architect of Amarga Architects. The Zoom session highlighted the value of a design professional’s role in making sure all activities within the building design and construction phase are done properly, smoothly and more importantly, to the best interest of the client and its future users. Also joining the event during the media launch were society and culture websites The Cebuano and SkyscraperCity – Cebu Updates.

The successful media launch of “TUKI-TUKI: Disenyo ug Konstruksyon Pagahisgutan” was made possible especially through the generous support of the event partners from Lilu Advertising and Marketing Solutions and Habitat for Humanity Terwilliger Center and the incredible members of UAP Cebu Chapter who showed their unwavering hard work and dedication.

From Trash to Treatment: UAP Qatar Turns E-Waste into Wellness

In a world where sustainability has become more than just a buzzword, the United Architects of the Philippines Qatar Chapter stepped up with action and heart. Staying true to its commitment to environmental responsibility and community well-being, UAP Qatar proudly conducted its first green initiative for fiscal year 2024–2025 with the inspiring program, “Turn Your E-Waste to Health & Wellness.”

More than just a recycling effort, this initiative was a call to care for the planet and for human welfare. In partnership with Wellkins Medical Centre, a trusted name in health care in Qatar, the chapter invited members to dig deep into their drawers and closets, gather up their broken, obsolete and unused gadgets, phones, laptops, keyboards, chargers and other tech items; and bring them to the General Membership Meeting.

Each piece of discarded tech item was not just weighed—it was transformed into something meaningful. For every kilo of e-waste donated, members earned QAR 5 (approximately PHP 75) in digital wallet credits, redeemable for medical services at Wellkins. Every participant was issued a Wellkins E-Wallet, recording their contribution and allowing them to turn environmental responsibility into personal wellness benefits. But the story did not end there. With the help of Seashore, one of Qatar’s licensed recycling facilities, UAP Qatar ensured that all collected electronics totaling an impressive 150 kilograms were properly and sustainably recycled. The success of the event, held at Casa Milano Showroom on February 21, 2025 was marked with the awarding of a Certificate of Recycling, a symbol of impact and proof that every little effort counts. UAP Qatar’s “Turn Your E-Waste to Health & Wellness” was more than a campaign. It was a mindset shift. It was about turning small, mindful actions into lasting benefits for our environment and our health. As the chapter continues to champion green architecture and sustainable living, this initiative stands as a powerful reminder that when we care together, we grow together—stronger, healthier, and greener.

UAP Singapore Donates to Orphanage

Willing Hearts Orphanage Inc. is a temporary home for 23 children aged 6 to 22. They are at different stages of their education and growth and need various basic necessities to live comfortably. Some of the most urgent needs include rice, food, and toiletries, which are essential for their daily sustenance.

The “Gift of Hope Drive” aimed to help meet these needs and ease some of the challenges the orphanage faces in caring for the children. Through this effort, the UAP Singapore Chapter provided support, ensuring the kids at Willing Hearts had the basic necessities for their well-being and happiness.

This act of kindness showed UAP Singapore Chapter’s commitment to helping others highlights the importance of community support for those in need. The event made a positive impact on the children’s well-being and reinforced the chapter’s dedication to spreading kindness and care in the society.

Willing Hearts Orphanage Inc. holds a significant place in the hearts of UAP Singapore Chapter members, having been designed in 2015 by the chapter spearheaded by Architect Mark Gabriel as a collaborative project with the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers Singapore Chapter. The establishment was envisioned as a safe haven for children in need, and its foundation reflects the values of social responsibility and giving that are integral to UAP Singapore Chapter.
