Icongratulate my colleagues behind the editorial board of The UAP Post, led by its Editor-In-Chief, Arch. Ericson Europa, for publishing this issue that reflects on the highlights of the first quarter of our Fiscal Year 2023 to 2024 under the Futureproofing 2.0/UAP Aim High program.
This 2023, we proved the essence of being the VANGUARDS OF OUR PROFESSION AND THE ORGANIZATION as it reflects during the time when the Supreme Court released its decision on our petition last November 9, that only registered and licensed architects may prepare, sign, and seal architectural documents. Our unified vigilance in this much-awaited decision by the country’s highest court after a decade is indeed remarkable and worth-the-wait! Thanks to everyone who supported us, especially to our colleagues who worked diligently behind our petition.
The year 2023 also saw us OPTIMIZING OUR STRENGTH AND RESOURCES. As we proudly hosted our Asian architect colleagues to the 20th Asian Congress of Architects in Boracay, the UAP was also brought to the international stage of architecture, through the UIA World Congress of Architects in Demark and ASEAN Architects Summit in Indonesia! Aside from that, we also celebrated the World Architecture Day, the National Conference of Architects in Palawan, and the recent National Architecture Week – Philippine Architecture Festival in Baguio! From the Philippines to the world, and vice versa, we are determined enough to reintroduce ourselves as globally-competitive Filipino architects. Our capability to rise up from the challenges is a good indication of our resiliency and dedication as architects.
By promoting our INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP this 2023, we joined all UAP chapters in most of their events, starting with their inductions to their anniversaries and other engagements. It is such a fulfilling experience to discover something new, meet and hear more architects, one UAP chapter at a time. With the help of our dedicated Area Vice Presidents to the District and Chapter officers, we created bridges and connections to make the UAP more UNITED than ever. More than that, we always make sure that all architects are in this together.
The success of our architects, their respective firms, and architecture students in various award-giving recognitions is a testament to UAP’s commitment in CULTIVATING A CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE. Aside from that, we have so many architects who have excelled in their respective fields this 2023 we should congratulate for. As architects, we always strive to become the best version of ourselves, within and beyond our profession. Same goes to our CPD seminars, where architects are always given a chance to develop and expand their skills.
EMPOWERING THE REGIONS and our members this 2023 lies in our desire that no architect will be left behind. Samasama tayong aahon sa mga hamon. That’s why most of our events are being held outside of Metro Manila, because we are bringing the UAP closer to all the members. Let’s
not forget also to empower our fellows and colleagues in this profession by becoming proactive in our national and chapter-level activities that never fail us in providing opportunity to bring out the best of us!
Aiming high for greater heights means looking forward to what we can do within and beyond our profession. Most of all, as architects, we are committed in bringing out our SERVICE ABOVE SELF, with all our social responsibility activities and initiatives that ignite the spirit of BAYANIHAN in our communities. As our way of giving back to every Filipino, it eventually motivates us on the real essence of being an architect with a Filipino soul. Beyond planning and designing projects, the heart of being an architect goes out to every Filipino who deserves goodwill.
As we move forward to the second half of our Fiscal Year by January 2024, together, we will conquer all the challenges to our profession and the industry before we set forth to our 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary by 2025. The renovation of our headquarters in Quezon City through our UAP Reimagined Project and the UAP Web Portal 2.0, alongside the NATCON49 and CONEX 2024, are some of the things we are looking forward to by 2024 before we finally achieve the FUTUREPROOFING of our profession and the organization.
Once again, I salute the architects behind this issue of The UAP Post. May you continue reporting what we have for our colleague architects and those who want to be like us in the future. To the readers, let’s continue supporting the UAP programs and agenda that will surely bring out the best in our profession!
Saludo ako sa bawat arkitektong Pilipino, saan man sa mundo!
Mabuhay ang Arkitektong Pilipino!
Ina celebration of creativity and expertise, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) successfully hosted the much-anticipated National Conference of Architects (NCA) 2023 along with four Area Assemblies in the enchanting City of Puerto Princesa, Palawan. This annual midyear gathering, held from October 26 to 28, 2023, brought together architects from around the globe to delve into the theme of “PANAGHIUSA,” a Visayan term signifying solidarity and unity.
This year’s NCA+AA Director, Arch. Jehanne Frances Dy – Cruz, alongside the host chapter UAP Palawan under the leadership of Arch. Kristine Joanne Tombucon, played pivotal roles in ensuring the success of the event. The hardworking team, supported by UAP National President Richard Garcia and Executive Director for Conventions, Events and Assemblies Antonio Valdez with Deputy Reymark Gardiola, collectively contributed to the seamless execution of a memorable gathering.
With an impressive turnout of 800 to 1000 delegates representing UAP’s 197 strong chapters both domestically and internationally, the event showcased a remarkable amalgamation of knowledge exchange, cultural exploration, and architectural marvels. The City of Puerto Princesa, with its breathtaking natural wonders, played the perfect host to the event.
The theme “PANAGHIUSA” resonated throughout the conference as architects engaged in dialogues and seminars. The emphasis on adapting to a changing world and preparing for a future-proofed profession underscored the commitment of UAP to the continued excellence of the architectural field while embracing the spirit of togetherness.
Delegates had the opportunity to explore Palawan’s natural wonders, from the world-renowned Underground River to the pristine beaches that dot the coastline. The local tourism benefits were evident as participants immersed themselves
in the cultural tapestry of the region, fostering a sense of appreciation for the symbiotic relationship between architecture and the environment.
In conclusion, the NCA 2023 + Area Assemblies in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the architectural profession. Through insightful discussions, cultural immersion, and collaboration
with industry partners, the event not only enriched the professional lives of architects but also showcased the intrinsic link between architecture, culture, and the environment. As the UAP continues to chart new horizons, events like these underscore the pivotal role architects play in shaping a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing future while embracing the spirit of “PANAGHIUSA.”
Every first Monday of October is the World Architecture Day (WAD). This is celebrated in different countries around the world to show the importance of architecture. The UIA theme for this year is “Architecture for Resilient Communities” from the 2023 World Habitat Day theme: “Resilient urban economies: cities as drivers of growth and recovery.” With this year’s theme, the UIA seeks to place emphasis on the capability of architects and architecture in creating a sustainable community life between urban and rural areas in all countries.
The United Architects of the Philippines celebrated the World Architecture Day last October 2, 2023 at the UAP Headquarters in Quezon City. The UAP WAD Committee started the event with a flag rising ceremony, followed by the opening program, and an Open House that featured the recent developments of the organization. The morning event was attended by UAP National President Richard Garcia, WAD Chairperson Maria Alora Angeles and committee members, and Commission on Government and External Affairs Executive Director Mary Kristine Segovia. Also present were members of the UAP, UAPGA,
and UAPSA; partners in the industry, like Davies Paints, Holcim, and Crown Pipes representatives; and UAP staff.
The event showcased the exhibit of the recently concluded ARCASIA Awards for Architecture 2023 (AAA) of the 20th Asian Congress of Architects (ACA20) which the Philippines hosted in Boracay. The exhibit was organized by the Commission on Professional Practice headed by Executive Director Cecilia Cayman-Gamana and Deputy Executive Director/Co-chair of Competitions Arnold San Sebastian. The Committee on Resilient Architects headed by Arch. Geomilie TumamaoGuittap, likewise exhibited its works emphasizing sustainable and resiliency in design.
Different committees of the UAP also launched their projects during WAD celebration. First was the relaunching of the UAP Website, headed by Arch. Bonstara Remo of South Triangle Chapter. Next, Chairperson Arch. Junie CamuAngelo of the UAP Headquarters Reimagined Project had a contract signing with various industry partners for the makeover of the UAP HQ. Last, UAP Center for
Filipino Architecture Executive Director Niña Reanne Maiquez, together with Arch. Olivia Robles, Chairperson for A+D 2.0, launched their event Architectural Documentary Film Festival 2023 (A+D 2.0), a film making contest aimed to encourage UAPSA chapters to partner with UAP chapters within their area in creating a film that will showcase the creativity of their partnership.
The Commission on Government and External Affairs Executive Director Mary Kristine Segovia and World Architecture Day Committee Chairperson Maria Alora Angeles organized a CPD hybrid seminar, entitled: “Sustainable Horizons: Architectural Innovations for a Resilient Future.” Invited speakers were Arch. Ronnie Yumang, who discussed about “Regenerative Architecture: Crafting Eco-Symbiosis in Design” and Arch. Robert Benedict Hermoso for “Sustainable Reconstruction of Heritage Buildings: Renewing Legacy.” The hybrid seminar was a success as it was attended by 560 members of the organization all around the globe as they gained new knowledge on sustainability and resiliency.
The United Architects of the Philippines, through the “UAP Cares,” and as a joint CSR project of seven UAP chapters, participated in the annual Brigada Eskwela. UAP La Union, UAP TarlacKublahi , UAP Pangasinan-Dagupan, UAP Pangasinan Magnayon, UAP Paranaque Palanyag, UAP QC Silangan, and UAP Baguio, together with the Arkitektong Tarlaqueno Kanlahi Eagles Club, collaborated to heed the call of Arch. Rossano Baradi, Consultant on Urban Development of Bauang, La Union.
The activity, coined as “KOLABORASYON – “Aguman – Kaddua –Pandoroypo” and chaired by Arch. Baradi, aimed to provide painting materials, school supplies, basic construction materials to two major public schools in Bauang, La Union, namely: Bauang North Central School and Calumbaya Elementary School.
The team first visited the two schools last August 12, 2023 and provided initial painting materials and art materials. A week later, coinciding with
the presence of the national officers attending three UAP inductions in La Union, UAP National President Richard Garcia, National Executive Vice President Donato Magcale, Area A Vice President Hernando Advento, and District A1a Director Estrelita Rugnao took time out to join the group for the actual turn-over of hygienic kits, school supplies, and painting materials.
The highlight of the Brigada was the pledge of NP Garcia to provide the other needs of the entire Bauang North Central School supplies from the UAP National CSR funds. NP Garcia, with the other officers, then made an actual ocular inspection of the kindergarten playground and assigned DD Rugnao to facilitate the design and provision of playground elements, as requested by the School Principal and the PTA President.
Since all public schools were mandated by DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte to remove all visual aids and decorations in all classrooms, UAP took the lead in helping the PTA in cleaning the walls of classrooms
and initiated the repainting of classroom walls to the delight of the teachers and parents as well. UAP Pangasinan Magnayon Chapter President Gerardo Gonzalez, UAP La Union Chapter President Marlon Niduaza, and Arch. Baradi provided the painting materials to be used by the volunteers from line agencies of Bauang, who were tasked to paint the rest of the classrooms. Chapter President Ervy Jones Millado and past Chapter President Ricky Sangil of UAP Tarlac Kublahi and UAP Pangasinan Dagupan Chapter President Ronnie Chua donated school and office supplies and hygienic kits. Past UAP La Union Chapter President Rinaldi Gamayo provided truckloads of river mix while the other chapter presidents from Baguio, QC Silangan, Paranaque Palanyag sent their pledges thru Arch. Baradi.
In his message, NP Garcia stressed the role of UAP in responding to the basic needs of public schools to support better facilities and quality basic education with the assistance of industry partners and suppliers. He encouraged all other chapters to follow the same.
The ARCASIA Student Jamboree is a biennial event that is held in parallel with ARCASIA’s Asian Congress of Architects (ACA). This year, the Student Jamboree was held in Boracay on September 18 to 22, 2023. The primary goal of the event is to promote awareness among Asian architectural students, eliciting their support and future participation in the organization. Further, it aims to bring together students and mentors from across the region to connect, collaborate, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the challenges and opportunities facing the architecture community.
The Jamboree offers a range of activities and programs designed to facilitate learning, networking, and community building. These include thematic workshops, lectures, recreational activities, and cultural exchanges. The event provides a platform for students to express themselves, exchange ideas, and learn from experienced professionals in the field. The Jamboree also offers opportunities for participants to explore the host country’s culture and architecture, fostering a deeper appreciation of the region’s diverse heritage.
Consistent with this year’s objective of establishing lasting relationships and not just acquaintances, instead of starting the event in the usual formal ceremonies, the organizers prepared group activities which enabled attendees to meet and know coparticipants from other countries. These activities enabled the students to immediately gain friends even before the program formally started. This made each delegate enjoy the weeklong
Jamboree with friends and peers from different nationalities and cultures all throughout the event.
The formal opening ceremonies of the Jamboree was held a day after the ACA Congress Opening, which introduced the ACA 20 organizers, namely: ARCASIA Past President Arch. Yolanda Reyes, past and current Vice Presidents for Zone B Arch. Edric Marco Florentino and Arch. Ana Mangalino-Ling, and ACA 20 Convenor Arch. Joey Manalad and his deputies, Arch. Tony Valdez and Arch. Reymark Gardiola, together with the Jamboree Convenor Arch. Marian Eileen Florentino-Marudo and Arch. Joy Villar as Deputy Convenor.
The third day of the event featured the Jamboree talks. In line with this year’s theme “Paghahabi: Weaving a Future-Ready Environment,” speakers came from different countries or institutions who shared their wisdom to the delegates. Resource speakers included Arch. Kate Schwensenn from Clemson University School of Architecture, USA; Arch. Andras Krizhan, President of the Hungarian Architects; Arch. Jose Luis Cortes, Immediate Past President of the International Union of Architects; Arch. Joan Tabinas, Executive Director of the UAP Professional Development Commission; Arch. Datuk P. Kasi, Past President of the Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM); and Ms. Stephanie Frogoso from the Philippines.
On the fourth day of the event, the delegates then faced physical challenges during the “Ultimate Race” wherein they were grouped
into mixed teams and raced to different pitstops around Boracay. This activity further strengthened the camaraderie among delegates as they enjoyed the beauty of one of the world’s toprated beaches.
At the closing of the Jamboree came the Fellowship Night. Delegates had one last opportunity to be with new friends and future colleagues as they dined, partied, and enjoyed the resort’s swimming pool and let the last night of the Jamboree be one of most memorable part of the international gathering.
Professionals do need to continuously learn and improve oneself and that is the same with students. It is always good to mix learning with having fun, while gaining new friends and further expanding one’s circle extending to other countries and not just one’s own. One thing is for sure, the next ACA and its Student Jamboree will definitely be a much awaited event for both architects, and future architects of the Asian region.
The UAP College of Fellows (COF) honored six of its members with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the Balik-Tanaw 2023 held on October 7, 2023 at the UAP Headquarters in Quezon City. The recognition was bestowed upon the honorees for their lifelong contributions to the United Architects of the Philippines and for the individual roles they played and continue to play as lifetime achievers.
Every year, the award is presented by the COF to its deserving members through the annual Balik-Tanaw Program. The recognition is a brainchild of Arch. Maria Elena C. Cayanan, Past Chancellor of the COF. It started as the culminating activity of the UAP in observance of World Architecture Day (WAD) in October 2006. Since then, it has become a traditional part of the COF’s WAD celebration every October of each year.
The six distinguished architects are: Emmanuel Cuntapay (UAP Cagayan Valley Chapter), Antonio Sangrador (UAP Iloilo-Marikudo Chapter), Eusthenes Lu (UAP Manila-Metro Chapter), Avelino Pastor (UAP Leyte West Chapter), Vicente Duran
(UAP Manila Sampaloc), and Alexander Balce (UAP Maharlika Chapter). Architect Cuntapay served as the 13th National President of UAP, whose administration made constant efforts towards the advancement of the profession, the well-being of the professional, and the growth of the professional organization. Architect Sangrador is the Charter President of the Iloilo-Marikudo Chapter and later as its Chapter President from 1997 to 1999. He helped establish the Iloilo City Cultural Heritage Conservation Council and served as its chairman.
A founding chapter officer of UAP Manila-Metro, Architect Lu also served as Chapter Vice-President for Programs from 1985 to 1986. He was part of the Metro 14k group that solicited funds for the purchase of the lot where the UAP National Headquarters now stands. Architect Pastor, together with six other architects, led in the chartering of the UAP Leyte Samar chapter in 1978. In 2000, he was awarded as the first architect of Palompon, Leyte and as an outstanding alumnus of the Northern Leyte College.
Architect Duran has celebrated seventy years of unwavering passion for design and still continues his private practice. He is the founder and first Chapter President of UAP Manila Sampaloc Chapter and was conferred as Member Emeritus of the UAP for his 35 years of remarkable service to the organization. A hospital architect specialist, Architect Balce has designed numerous healthcare facilities in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Parallel to the medical practitioners’ objectives, he aims to save lives through his works.
These six architects have proven themselves to be among the crème de la crème of the UAP. While being accepted in the College of Fellows is already an exceptional achievement, to be selected among the few is all the more remarkable. Indeed, this year’s awardees definitely serve as inspirations for other architects to emulate and to be motivated to strive to become lifetime achievers themselves.

The past fiscal year, the United Architects of the Philippines has fortunately been able to bounce back from the setbacks and hardships brought about by the catastrophic COVID-19 pandemic. The global health crisis has tested UAP’s resolve and the organization was able to overcome all challenges that came its way. The more than 55,000+ members rallied behind the organization and have painstakingly worked so hard to surmount adversities and to become better versions of themselves ever ready to serve as contributors to nation building and prime movers of our country’s infrastructure development.
For all their struggles, hardwork, and tireless efforts, the architects certainly deserve to unwind and have fun. And what better way to accomplish this than spending a much-needed rest and recreation in an aptly relaxing setting while in the company of colleagues and gaining additional learnings at the same time. The UAP has just provided an opportunity for members to experience all these with the staging of two recent events. These were the 20th Asian Congress of Architects and the 2023 National Conference of Architects + Area Assemblies. The former was held in September 2023 in the world-renown Boracay, famous for its long stretch of powdery white sand, crystal clear and azure waters, while the latter was staged two months later in stunning province of Palawan, considered as one of the best islands in the world.
Both events were perfect avenues for architects to enjoy the sights and atmosphere of two of the country’s best island destinations. Aside from the locales’ natural wonders and pristine beaches, the participants also enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie of fellow architects plus the knowledge and ideas gained from the seminars and talks lined up during these two gatherings.
With this short respite from the hustle and bustle of their daily work grind, the architects have come out recharged and enriched from both events. Indeed, after this well-deserved break, it is important to keep the momentum going and march on towards the quest for excellence and a future-proofed organization.

In celebration of History Month, UAP Tarlac Chapter conducted the first “MoTour: Tarlac Architectural Heritage Ride” on August 13, 2023. Architects on two wheels explored into the exhilarating world of motorcycle adventures and travelled through the annals of Tarlac’s rich history.
UAP Tarlac Chapter riders, together with Tarlac State University College of Architecture and Fine Arts students, met up at Nay’s House in Tarlac City, a structure which is reminiscent of the early 20th century post-colonial style featuring delicate Art Deco elements and has been tastefully transformed into an inviting dining salon. From there, the riders leisurely started the cruise through the iconic landmarks of Tarlac. They visited different historical buildings, such as the Diwa ng Tarlac Convention Center, the Tarlac Capitol Building, and the Museo ng Probinsya ng Tarlac. Each stop offered a captivating glimpse into the rich tapestry of Tarlac’s past.
In awe of the Tarlac Regional Trial Court Building’s architectural marvels, they also found themselves captivated by the peaceful beauty of Maria Cristina
Park. The journey through Tarlac also led to the Tarlac National High School Main Campus, and to the legendary old Tarlac City theaters—Aurora, PET, Art, Oro, and Alice Theaters—each with its own tale to tell.
Next stop, the magnificent San Sebastian Cathedral and the deeply meaningful Corazon Aquino Monument, profoundly moved the riders because of their majestic grandeur and rich historical significance. In the reverent culmination of the expedition, they respectfully rendered homage at the esteemed premises of the Capas National Shrine. This hallowed edifice stands as a poignant testament to the immeasurable sacrifices rendered by our valiant heroes.
At the conclusion of the momentous ride, UAP Tarlac Chapter will always remember that the province’s heritage lives on in these majestic structures. The riders strive to continue commemorating and safeguarding this legacy, guaranteeing that the reverberations of the collective history endure for future generations.
Being a chapter named after a local artistic craft of bamboo gateway arches found in local fiesta celebrations in the province of Bulacan, UAP Bulacan Singkaban celebrated the month of September as Philippine Bamboo Month by partnering with various groups who share the same passion and advocacy, and lining up two remarkable activities to promote the importance and potential of bamboo as a sustainable solution to various environmental, economic, and social challenges our planet experiences.
September was officially designated as Philippine Bamboo Month through Proclamation No. 1401, signed by former President, Rodrigo Duterte. The proclamation’s intent was to “instill national consciousness” on the significance of the bamboo plant among Filipinos.
It was kicked off by planting 120 bamboo seedlings along the picturesque Angat River in Longos, Pulilan, Bulacan on September 23, 2023. Despite an early morning rain shower, this did not deter the enthusiastic participants from actively engaging in this humble activity. This endeavor aimed to enhance the natural beauty of the community and contribute to our planet’s well-being, moving us closer to a greener and healthier world.
This was in partnership with the Municipality of Pulilan, Bulacan, through its Municipal History, Arts, Culture and Tourism Office (MHACTO) and its Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO). UAP Bulacan Singkaban also collaborated with UAP Bamboo Project Special Committee, UAP Regional District A2a, and other
UAP chapters, namely UAP San Juan-Mandaluyong, UAP Del Pilar-Bulacan and UAP Bulacan, as well as the Bulacan Section of the Philippine Institute of Architects in a bid to promote the crucial role of bamboo in mitigating climate change, preventing soil erosion, filtering pollutants, and serving as a sustainable source of materials for various industries.
To conclude the Philippine Bamboo Month, UAP Bulacan Singkaban Chapter partnered with the UAP Bamboo Project Special Committee and UAP San JuanMandaluyong Chapter in holding a Bamboo Advocacy CPD Webinar on September 30, 2023. This informative event, conducted via Zoom, was entitled “Bamboo Reboot: Reimagining Bamboo Advocacy for Sustainable Buildings and Communities” and was accredited with 3.5 credit units under CPD accreditation no. ARC-200901-794.
The webinar featured two distinguished resource speakers, Mr. Edgardo Manda, the President of the Philippine Bamboo Foundation, and Arch. Jed Michael de Guzman, Principal of Bamboo Grassroots Atelier. Drawing participation from over 300 online attendees, this enlightening webinar empowered individuals with fresh insights and inspiration, fostering a commitment to becoming advocates for a more sustainable future with bamboo at its core.
The webinar has called upon all participants to embrace the crusade and become advocates for bamboo, evolving into “bamboo-ang architects,” architects crazy for bamboo, ensuring that the remarkable potential of bamboo is fully realized and utilized in their designs and projects for the betterment of our planet and the wellbeing of future generations.
An ARC for WAD! A shortened version of “Architecture for Resilient Communities for World Architecture Day 2023,” that was the theme of UAP Gulis Capampangan’s celebration of this year’s World Architecture Day at the Vista Mall Pampanga in San Fernando, Pampanga on October 4, 2023. Creating a hall of forum and exhibit, the chapter organized several activities aligned with the said theme.
One of these was assigning an architect to an aspiring architect, thus arranging a thesis consultancy not just for 5th year Architecture students but also for students who are in the early stage of studying architecture, believing that architecture should enrich its own internal community, especially the aspirants in order to attain resiliency for the profession. To successfully assemble such concept, the chapter utilized its resources by gathering chapter members who are in the academe, namely: Chapter Treasurer Ana Pamela Aldana, Chapter BOD for Professional Development Ed Christopher David, and Chapter Auditor Jester Kim Catu.
UAP Gulis Capampangan Chapter also catered to numerous Architecture students of different college levels coming from various universities, architects, and other allied professionals during the Community Resiliency Talk, led by the Chapter President Aladdin Akil. To further exemplify the profession, a collection of architectural 3D puzzles owned by Chapter Secretary Thea Louise Villanueva were exhibited. This promoted visual interaction, not just with related professionals, but also with various people from all walks of life who were in the area.
As the chapter aimed to encourage and recognize the works of students, with the help of Chapter BOD for Education Jayson Bordon, scale models from Don Honorio Ventura State University (DHVSU) College of Architecture were
exhibited as well. Though conceptualizing this event was never easy, UAP Gulis Capampangan Chapter made sure that going under was not an option.
The World Risk Report 2023 reveals that the Philippines has the highest risk from natural events and climate change impacts worldwide. Beyond the negative effects on the country’s vulnerable communities due to recurring extreme weather conditions, hydrologic variability complicates water resource management as an everyday reality. Among the number of strategic challenges to address the issues is institutional fragmentation.
Collaboration and an overarching approach are key to closing this gap. It is apt that on October 14, 2023, a singular hybrid forum, “BlueGreen Infrastructure: A Design Strategy for a Climate-Defined Future,” was organized by UAP Diliman Chapter, in collaboration with PALA and
PIEP, at the DLS-CSB Atrium. It featured a jampacked day of thoughtleaders in the allied professions of the built environments: architects, environmental planners, and landscape architects. With opening remarks by Ar/ EnP Nathaniel von Einsiedel, experts from UAP, PIEP, and PALA discussed the cases to integrate climate risk mitigations, design for adaptable conditions, and adopt water-sensitive urban design and blue-green infrastructure.
Allied professionals on the built environment gather during the forum on blue-green infrastructure. key elements of the Philippine Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan. Governor Eugenio Lacson of Negros Occidental communicated issues and challenges at the provincial level, while scientist Rex Victor Cruz spoke on the importance of watersheds and watershed management.
DENR Secretary Antonio Yulo-Loyzaga provided a keynote address delivered by Engr. Marcelino Rivera, Chief of Environmental Quality Management Division. NEDA Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Development Roderick Planta talked about the current conditions and
As UAP Diliman Chapter President Rola Vizmonte underscores: “Addressing the impacts and the solutions to mitigate climate change does not come from one person, one organization. It is a collective effort by all. Our hope is: as professionals, we all learn to live responsibly and work fervently with the purpose of saving our natural environment and resources as we learn to build better.”

Celebrating of World Architecture Day last October 2, 2023, the UAP Manila Sta. Mesa Chapter, led by Architect Paul Eugene Ong, embraced a transformative “5 S” approach, setting a new standard for dynamic and impactful festivities.
These are:
S1 - Serving the Chapter Member. Architect Emilie Garcia’s book, “Beyond Sketches and Structures,” which champions inspiration through writing, took center stage during the WAD exhibit. During the relaunch, a dedicated booth not only facilitated literary engagement but also introduced the practice of including prayers throughout the project cycle, adding a spiritual dimension to architectural pursuits.
S2 - Serving the Chapter. Under the theme “Know Your Members,” the chapter organized an exhibit featuring its members. Architect Ong designed 25 lightweight and highly mobile modules. Folding seamlessly into a utility van, these modules enabled efficient transport and setup at various locations.
S3 - Serving the Mother Organization. The exhibit modules found a second purpose by being lent to the UAP Headquarters for displaying ACARE exhibit materials. This resourcefulness proved invaluable in conveying the architectural profession’s message during exhibits.

between architecture and community resilience. To add an artistic touch, an exhibition featuring UAPSA artworks was presented, and officers from UAP Cavite Tierra Alta played a crucial role as part of the selection committee.
Continuing the spirit of resilience and community, a river cleanup drive activity with the theme, “Kalikasan, Kinabukasan,” was organized on October 21, 2023, in Brgy. San Miguel II, Silang, Cavite. This initiative was a joint effort among UAP Cavite Tierra Alta, UAPSA NU Dasmariñas, Silang LGU, and MENRO.
Aligned with the WAD theme, the event reinforced the idea that community resilience is not limited to well-designed buildings but extends to the environment that surrounds us. With a river as the canvas, volunteers from the participating organizations came together to clean up and restore a vital part of their community. They realized that the health of our environment is intrinsically connected to our architectural resilience. Clean, vibrant surroundings are the foundation upon which resilient communities are built.

The UAP Regional District B4 has yet again initiated an unchartered benchmark district project. Big thanks to Wilcon Depot’s VP for Marketing, Ms. Mayeth Cadungog, together with her marketing staff, who stepped up to ensure the success of the logo installations.
The endeavor, spearheaded by UAP District B4 Director Mary Janessie Tumambing, intends to have the logo of each chapter under District B4 installed inside the ABCDE Lounge of the Wilcon Depot branch within the chapter’s area of jurisdiction. This simple project was conceptualized to be a small event but with a lasting impact. The agreement is perpetual since the UAP chapter logos will remain on the walls of the ABCDE Lounges for the next fifty years and beyond. The chapter logos were installed from August 31 to November 10, 2023.
The chapters and Wilcon Depot branches covered by the project are the following: UAP Quezon Province Chapter - Wilcon Depot Tayabas, Quezon; UAP Lipa Chapter - Wilcon Depot Bagong Pook, Lipa City; UAP Mindoro Chapter - Wilcon Depot Calapan, Oriental Mindoro; UAP San Pablo Chapter - Wilcon Depot Maharlika, San Pablo City; UAP Batangas LakeshoreWilcon Depot Sto Tomas, Batangas; UAP Batangas Chapter - Wilcon Depot Alangilan, Batangas City; UAP Palawan Chapter - Wilcon Depot Puerto Princesa, Palawan; UAP Laguna Chapter - Wilcon Depot Sta Rosa, Laguna; and UAP Batangas East - Wilcon Depot Rosario, Batangas.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is one of the thrusts of the United Architects of the Philippines - Bacolod Chapter. Believing that the greatest gift that one can give is the gift of life and one simple way to save a life is to give blood, members of the chapter were privileged to have participated in the Blood Donation Drive held on August 13, 2023 at the Villamonte Covered Court, Barangay Villamonte, Bacolod City.
The activity aimed to ensure communities to have access to safe
and quality-assured blood and blood products, readily available in both normal and emergency situations. It was organized by Dugong Alay, Dugong Buhay Cebu in partnership with Negros First Provincial Blood Center, and Davies Paints.
The members of UAP Bacolod Chapter, the architects’ families and friends, as well as residents of Barangay Villamonte became lifesavers as they came to donate their blood during the event. While only ten members passed the screening as voluntary blood
donors, the chapter officers, headed by Chapter President Dawn Arañez, provided assistance in the blood donation drive.
Voluntary blood donation is very important. Recognized to be the safest blood donors, voluntary donors are the safest since they are motivated by altruism and the desire to help others. With a sense of moral duty, they have no reasons to withhold information about their lifestyles or medical conditions that may make them unsuitable blood donors
October 21, 2023 Santa Barbara, Iloilo - The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Iloilo Bahandi Chapter has continuously upheld and crafted its identity through regionalism as evident in the title of its activities in the last four years. Haplos Bahandi, meaning “precious touch” has become the flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Project of the chapter. Under it is Dihon, meaning “to craft, create or design.” It is dedicated to providing design solutions to communities to whom the chapter has chosen as its recipient.
The latest sequel of Dihon was PinTanum during the World Architecture Day celebration. PinTanum is a fusion of two Hiligaynon
terms: pinta, meaning “paint” or “to paint” and tanum, which means “plant” or “to plant.” The event was a combination of mural painting and lecture about native trees and planting at the same time.
PinTanum has brought together an array of enthusiastic participants from different walks of life, namely: UAP Iloilo Bahandi Chapter officers and members, Lunhaw Madias - the Iloilo-Guimaras native trees advocates, Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O), pupils of Cadagmayan Norte Elementary School, Santa Barbara Elementary Central School, UAP Student Auxiliary of Iloilo Science and Technology University, stakeholders, sponsors, industry partners like Davies Paints Philippines, and two of Sta. Barbara’s Sangguniang Bayan members.
In celebration of World Architecture Day 2023, the chapter promoted architecture as a means to build resilient communities. The initiative aimed to celebrate the rich local culture and history of the community, to promote an understanding and preservation of civic heritage and cultural identity, and to address environmental concerns by emphasizing the need for action and individual accountability.
PinTanum is a testament where collective action and community involvement is a facet in cultivating a greener and hopeful future.

through holistic, child-friendly, and safe areas during a PDL’s exercise of his or her visitation rights.
Thus, a 220-square meter tapering lot strip will be converted into a park and playground.
