MESSAGE FROM OUR OUTGOING PRESIDENT:

Dear Members,

It is with immense pride and gratitude that I look back on both this past fiscal year as well as my own two-year term as President of our beloved University Club. It has been an honor to be a part of so much intentional growth and boundless improvement at the Club – all made possible not only by the hard work of our dedicated staff, but also the enthusiasm and involvement of our board of directors, and all of you – our members.

Our Membership Drive this past year was a tremendous success with so many wonderful new friends joining our ranks. What a pleasure to see so many of you jumping right in, fostering warm connections, and contributing to our vibrant Club scene with an array of fresh ideas and initiatives. Thank you to our Membership Committee led by Jo Payne. Your contributions have truly enriched our Club! Indeed, the wealth of knowledge, passions, and skills our membership brings to the table is truly inspiring. This past year alone some of the highlights that come to mind include the instantly popular offproperty adventures spearheaded by fellow board member Kirsten Ellis; the fantastic and fun Welcome Wednesdays and Mah Jongg Merriment events –brought to you by members Maggie Moss-Tucker and Cynthia McClelland respectively; the new affinity groups launched this past year, including the Performing Arts Roundtable Luncheons led by member Bruce Stark; and so many other initiatives and member involvement. We are so fortunate for such an involved, talented, and diverse membership, and I tip my hat to all of you every day!

I am truly proud of the terrific improvements made by Sarah and Chef Tony in dining and service. Special thanks to Patrick Day and his F&B Committee for their leadership and support. Consider Chef Tony’s new Farm to Table initiative started this year. If you have not yet joined one of the visits to the local farmer’s market that Chef Tony organizes, I highly recommend you put it on your list for this coming year! I also look forward to checking my email every

week for Chef’s Specials and delectable seasonal menus on offer. Thank you, Tony, for your creativity and dedication to your craft, and for spoiling us with such wonderful locally sourced dishes every week. And thank you also to Sarah and her team for fostering a positive culture of continuous improvement, always looking to raise the bar on ambiance and service. Together – staff and members alike – we have truly created something special here – a place where community and camaraderie, mutual respect and support, and true friendships take center stage. What a gift to us all!

As we look ahead to the coming fiscal year, we continue our dedication to both fiscal responsibility and the long-term sustainability of our Club. Together, we are hard at work to ensure that our beloved Club remains strong for generations to come, envisioning a beautifully preserved and thoughtfully enhanced Club – one that serves us well today and beyond. The creation of the Preservation Foundation of the University Club of Santa Barbara in 2024, coupled with our ongoing Centennial Campaign launched this year, are integral parts of this focus on honoring the past and building our future. I encourage everyone to join us in our efforts.

As I hand the baton to the next Club President, I want to take one final opportunity to officially thank you all for your boundless engagement, warmth, and fellowship. It is a privilege and a joy to share our beloved Club with you all. We are a remarkable treasure – our members, our mansion, and our staff – right here in Santa Barbara!

Sincerely,

MESSAGE FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER:

Dear Members,

In October of 2024 I wrote to you that we were looking forward to “growing our member offerings, focusing on enhancing our services for members, and bringing even more exclusive events and opportunities to the Club for our members to enjoy” in the coming year. Looking back now at this past year, I can honestly say that I am awestruck by just how much of this we have accomplished together.

Thanks to the dedication, creativity, and engagement of so many of you, we have truly grown this past year in leaps and bounds. If our Club was synonymous with words such as fun, vibrant, exciting, and inspiring before, it is now all the more so. Our calendar is chock full of incredible events, engaging activities, inspiring speakers and honored guests, and dynamic and exciting outings and excursions – all made possible and special by your participation, warmth, and exceptional amity. Together, we’ve launched new traditions, expanded our programming, and welcomed fresh ideas all while honoring the legacy of our historic home. The vibrancy of our community and the strength of our shared commitment to the Club’s mission have never been more evident.

I have also been inspired to see the ongoing growth in membership this past year, and especially to witness how warmly our new members have been welcomed in, and how quickly you have all become such an integral part of our membership community. It is a true testament to the shared values and ethos of our Club to see the immediate camaraderie, the connections fostered, and the active participation of all of our members together. Hearing your laughter and seeing so many smiles and shared excitement amongst our members here at the Club every day warms our hearts.

Of course, as we continue to grow and thrive in the here and now, we also continue to look ahead to our future. Our Centennial Campaign, launched this year, is in full swing. This vital enterprise

not only honors our Club’s rich legacy but also ensures its endurance and vibrancy for ourselves and generations to come. This crucial effort will continue to be at the heart of our planning and focus for the upcoming fiscal year and beyond. We look forward to sharing updates and progress with you all throughout the year, and we encourage you all to join us and actively participate in this historic journey.

No summary of the past year would be complete without a heartfelt thank you to all of you – our members – for all that you do to make our Club the warm, welcoming, and the awesome place that it is. To all of you who lead and contribute to our many affinity groups: thank you! To all of you who have volunteered your time serving on committees and the board: thank you! To all of you who have so generously put in time and effort to spearhead and make possible such wonderful member activities and opportunities: thank you! To all of you who have joined us for member activities, meals, events, field trips, classes, drinks, and socializing at the Club this past year: thank you! To all of you who share your ideas and thoughts with us to help make the Club better for everyone: thank you! To all of you who so warmly and effortlessly welcome new members into the University Club family: thank you! To all of you who volunteer your time, expertise, and efforts on behalf of the Club and your fellow members: thank you! And to everyone who makes the Club their home, who enjoys one another’s company here, raises a glass and shares a meal together, dances, laughs, connects, celebrates, and grows together here: THANK YOU! You all truly make the Club what it is.

A YEAR OF EXPANSION & ENGAGEMENT:

We are pleased to present the Annual Report for the fiscal year 2024-2025 - a year filled with growth, evolution, and expansion, particularly in the areas of membership, member engagement and offerings, dining, and service. As we reflect on this past year and look ahead to the task of preserving this incredible legacy for generations to come while building for our future together, we are proud to share a few of the highlights showcasing our Club spirit, ingenuity, and commitment to our members and the community:

MEMBERSHIP

53 New Members: This past year we welcomed so many wonderful new members to the University Club family from across the community! It was a real joy to see everyone become such an integral part of our Club so quickly, enriching our membership with fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and energy, and adding more opportunities to celebrate, connect, and grow together.

Membership Campaign: Our Membership Campaign, originally launched in 2024, continued to be a success, allowing us to build a robust membership. Underpinning this ongoing effort is our desire to maximize revenue from dues while increasing member engagement and broader offerings to our membership at large.

Respect & Warmth: We continuously work to ensure that our Club is a warm home and safe space for all our members and their guests to enjoy and be proud to frequent. To this end, we recently updated our Club Policies to help maintain a welcoming and respectful environment for all.

New Reciprocal Partnerships: Our members enjoy the luxury and amenities of a private club wherever their travels take them, with privileges at an array of quality social, university, athletic, yacht, country, and other clubs across nation and abroad. We continually forge new partnerships throughout the year, further expanding opportunities for our members. This past year a few of our newest partner clubs included the Cardiff Country Club in Wales and the Cornell Club in New York!

IT Support & Updated Wi-Fi: To help keep us up and running and ensure our members, guests, and private bookings have the

best connections possible, we continuously monitor our IT services. This past year our IT support underwent a merger with top IT consulting firm CITIG. The new IT support setup affords us with ongoing quality support and a dedicated IT technician with onsite assistance whenever needed. We also updated our Wi-Fi system to ensure quality and speed throughout the Club.

ACTIVITIES

Museum, among others, led to very engaging evenings. Speakers this past year have included authors, historians, architects, professors, and so much more, providing opportunities for intellectual growth, the sharing of knowledge, and enrichment.

More Fun at the Club: Our members love to have fun together, and laughter and playfulness abound throughout the clubhouse every day. This past year we were pleased to introduce some new social activities into the mix to allow for everyone’s jovial and playful sides to shine. Our new Trivia Nights have been a roaring success.

Off-Property Offerings: This year we took our member events and activities one step further, expanding our offerings beyond the physical walls of our clubhouse and adding opportunities for engagement also on days our clubhouse is closed (Mondays and weekends). From lawn-bowling to a polo match, to private tours of historic and architectural landmarks and endeavors around the community, our members got to experience camaraderie and local delights together in new and exciting ways this past year.

New Classes: We were proud to add canasta classes to our schedule recently, alongside the ever popular and successful array of Mah Jongg classes, affording another wonderful opportunity for members to share their passions and learn and grow together. Both Chess Club and Backgammon Club also continue to offer instruction for new players and beginners!

Distinguished Speakers: We continue to enjoy a wonderful line-up of prestigious speakers and expert panels as part of our Distinguished Speakers series here at the Club. Speakers include experts from amongst our own distinguished membership as well as experts from around the country and abroad. Collaborations with UCSB and The Couture Pattern

New Affinity Groups: Our members continue to spearhead the formation of new and inviting affinity groups, coming together to share their passions and to learn and grow together. This past year saw the addition of the very active and popular Performing Arts Roundtable Luncheon group, the revival of Chess Club, and the addition of another day to the Writers’ Society.

NETWORKING & COMMUNITY

Member Appreciation & Connections: We continued to expand on our many opportunities for members to meet and mingle with one another. In addition to our quarterly Member Appreciation Happy Hour Receptions, we also introduced our new Welcome Wednesdays. Another wonderful new tradition came in the form of Mah Jongg Merriment events, where members can meet, mingle, and connect with fellow aficionados.

Expanded Bar & Happy Hours: The University Club is synonymous with both social and professional networking. We are a true hub where individuals from an array of backgrounds converge to meet, connect, share passions, and foster lasting social and business relations. To help further nurture these opportunities, we recently expanded our bar hours to start an hour

earlier, at 4:00pm, and doubled our exclusive happy hour for members and their guests to extend for two hours, from 4:00pm-6:00pm! We love seeing all the connections and plans being made over house drinks around our clubhouse bar.

DINING & SERVICE

Staff Training: We continued our monthly staff trainings for both front of house and kitchen staff, including new menu tastings, and etiquette/service trainings, as well as the introduction of menu tests for all new menus. One fun highlight was the ‘server olympics’ held at the end of one of the etiquette trainings. Staff competed in categories such as selling the daily specials, wine service, properly setting a table, turning on the patio heaters, and more!

Staff Expansion & New Positions: We continued to expand and up our staffing to keep pace with our growing and active membership. We increased our overall front of house staffing and added bussers to every shift to ensure quality service. We also welcomed our new Sous Chef Jonathan (Jhonny) Dionicio to the team, further bolstering the experience and professionalism in the kitchen, as well as pizza cooks.

Garden to Glass Program: As part of our efforts to keep the quality and standards of our bar high, we launched our ‘Garden to Glass’ cocktail program, focusing heavily on promoting local brands and making all our bar syrups and shrubs in house, as well as all our own liquor infusions.

Keeping it Fresh: Chef Tony and his team have continued to impress and keep things fresh and local with seasonal menus every quarter, weekly specials with suggested wine pairings, and fun themed dining menus. Our members and their guests also enjoy weekly specialty cocktails. We continue to offer non-alcoholic options as well. There is something for everyone on the menu at the University Club!

Farmers Market Strolls: As a new initiative to further connect the Club and our members to the local community and all its offerings, Chef Tony stepped out of the kitchen this past year and into the community with guided visits for small groups of members though Santa Barbara’s Farmers Market. Together with Chef Tony, members are able to meet local growers, handpick ingredients, and then return to the Club together to enjoy a specially curated three-course dinner.

Comfort in Style: Sometimes it are the little things that make all the difference and help to make our members’ time at the Club just that bit better. To this end, we recently added a rack of pillows on the way out to the Sola Patio which members and their guests are welcome to use to enhance their comfort while dining with us.

Going Green: In keeping with our Clubs tradition of always striving to do better for our members as well as the community, and to keep up with the changing times, as we have been doing for the past 100 years, we focused this past year on several green initiatives for the Club. In addition to our full lineup of compostable to-go containers, cups, straws, and picks, we also switched out our teas to a brand that are compostable an joined the city’s Business Foodscraps Program. Not only are we doing our part to reduce waste, but we also saw a significant reduction in our trash bill as a result.

From Farm to Table: We are proud to be partnering with Babé Farms in Santa Maria to bring fresh, local produce to our tables here at the Club while supporting local agriculture. Together, we share a commitment to quality, sustainability, and community. To kickstart our new partnership and further staff understanding and training, our team enjoyed a very informative field trip to Babé Farms. It was a fun day where our staff toured the farm and learned more about the fruits and vegetables being purchased for use here at the Club, including how they wash and pack the produce, as well as tasting some of the food straight from the ground..

PRIVATE EVENTS

Updated Banquet Menus: We enhanced our private event offerings with an updated event menu. The new menu includes more themed options such as Italian buffet and taco buffet to choose from.

New Wedding Arch: For additional income and an elevated wedding experience we added a wedding arch that couples can rent..

PRESERVATION & STEWARDSHIP

Upkeep & Repairs: As with any historic building, repairs related to age are often needed. This past year we replaced our gas line after several issues were detected along the line. In addition, rain damage necessitated work to be done on our Sola Room and mold abatement in the basement as well.

Groundskeeping: The beautiful gardens surrounding our beloved Clubhouse were originally designed by Ralph Tallant (namesake of Stevens Park and Tallant Road) and Lockwood de Forest. Today, we take great pride in preserving this storied legacy. This year it was the turn of our palm trees to receive extra TLC. They were inspected by an arborist and trimmed to maintain health and safety.

Centennial Campaign: Our Centennial Campaign, which is raising funds to preserve and enhance our beloved and historic clubhouse, was launched this year and is now in full swing. More than just a building, our Clubhouse represents a legacy of excellence, generosity, and fellowship. It has been shaped by generations who believed in the power of shared spaces to enrich lives—and now, through the Centennial Campaign, we will have the opportunity to honor that legacy while preparing our Clubhouse for the next century and ensuring its endurance and vibrancy for ourselves and generations to come. This crucial effort will continue to be at the heart of our planning and focus for the upcoming fiscal year and beyond. We envision a beautifully preserved and thoughtfully enhanced University Club – one that continues to serve as a vibrant symbol of Santa Barbara history, culture, and community spirit.

New University Club Merch: We introduced new Club merch, including hats, sweaters, license plate covers, to go coffee thermos cups, water bottles, and canvas totes. All net proceeds from merch sales go to support our Centennial Campaign.

TREASURER’S REPORT:

This past year, our beloved University Club continued to make great strides toward fulfilling our ongoing commitment to being a dynamic, welcoming community filled with positive energy. At the same time, we have remained focused on the vital task of maintaining and improving our historic clubhouse — a century-old treasure that requires ongoing care and thoughtful planning.

Over the past years, our financial strategy has been guided by industry benchmarks and best practices within the private club sector. A key principle of this approach is ensuring that initiation fees are directed toward capital improvements, while member dues sustain daily operations.

Recognizing the need for an ongoing plan to address our capital and infrastructure needs, we officially launched the Centennial Campaign at the Summer Soirée, marking the beginning of the 2025–2026 fiscal year. The Campaign’s goal is to raise essential funds to preserve and enhance our historic clubhouse for future generations — because, as we all know, what could possibly go wrong with a 100-year-old building?

In conjunction with this effort, members were invited to contribute to the University Club Preservation Foundation, a newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created specifically to raise tax-deductible funds for preservation and improvement projects. Members may choose to contribute directly to the Centennial Campaign or through the Foundation, depending on their preference.

We are thrilled to share that, within just a few weeks of the campaign’s launch, donations and pledges totaled nearly $21,000, an encouraging start toward our Phase 1 goal of $250,000 — and toward securing the next 100 years of our Club’s legacy.

The University Club remains deeply dedicated to member services and engagement. This year, we continued to see vibrant participation in both on- and off-campus activities — experiences that truly capture the essence of the University Club. The Finance Committee continues to monitor costs closely, recognizing that these programs are integral to the life and energy of our community.

Financially, the Club ended the fiscal year with a net operating loss of approximately $34,000, a significant improvement from last year’s $174,000 loss (excluding initiation fees as revenue). Private events continued to play a key role in supporting Club operations and helping to sustain member programming.

Looking ahead, we anticipate ongoing challenges as inflation and payroll costs continue to rise. The budget for the upcoming year reflects these realities and is based on:

1. Dues: A steady membership base consistent with the prior year.

2. Event Income: Confirmed bookings for the first six months of FY25 and historical performance from FY24.

3. Food & Beverage: Increased participation in member dining.

Expenditures have been budgeted to account for inflation and known cost increases, particularly in staffing.

It has been an honor to serve on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer these past few years. I remain committed to supporting the Club’s financial health and its exciting path forward as we embark on this next phase of growth and preservation together.
