Dear Members,
Aloha! My husband and I recently returned from a wonderful trip to Maui. On one of our stops, I picked up a book left by the owner of the property called “Practice Aloha”. It really touched me and made me think of our club and our shared community here. I learned that ALOHA is derived from five Hawaiian words that loosely translate to: kindness, unity, harmony, pleasantness, humility and patience. In Hawaiian culture, aloha reflects a philosophy of interconnectedness and respect for all things. It's about treating others as family and fostering a sense of community. So, practicing aloha is all about taking the opportunity to be welcoming and gracious, treating others with kindness, as simple as a smile and warm greeting, and being a positive force in the world. It also seems to embody taking the long view as we heard from many locals about their steadfast commitment to the rebuilding of their cherished Lahaina.
Here at the University Club, I’m reminded of our long and storied history in Santa Barbara, how we supported our membership and each other during COVID and the warmth and welcoming spirit our staff share with us every day. I see the kindness and respect members share with each other and our staff. The welcoming spirit put forward to new members as they navigate their participation in our many events and activities, and, frankly, the hard work and commitment to our shared success I see in the service of our board members and leadership team. It’s inspiring and reminds me of all the positive aspects of our shared humanity. I don’t know about you, but those reminders are so fulfilling to me!
This is my last season as club president. A new president will take over this fall! It has been such an honor to serve in this role over the last two years. I’ve seen Sarah and her team adapt, grow and foster an even more elevated culture of continuous improvement. I’m so proud of their commitment and how the club is thriving! Our membership continues to grow and become more engaged. Susan Bradley, our Vice President, has always had my back and ensured seamless leadership and support for Sarah. She knows how to set very high
standards, with a smile! Sarah and her team keep raising the bar on food and beverage and service, activities, events and, yes, keeping our beautiful and historic clubhouse up and running! As you have seen and heard, we’ve weathered some significant storms over these last few years, and we’ve invested in critical repairs and maintenance of our historic clubhouse. That work will continue, and you’ll be hearing more about those plans over the next few months.
I have to say, I’m especially grateful to our committees: Membership – Chair, Jo Payne, Food & Beverage - Chair, Patrick Day, Facilities and Planning - Chair, Michael Porter, Activities – Co-chair, Kristen Ellis & Cynthia McLelland, Finance – Chair, Jack Heine with Gail Anikouchine our Treasurer. As a member-driven club, our committees really make a difference. If you’re interested in being part of a committee, reach out to Sarah and let her know! Committee membership is ever evolving helping to keep the club fresh and running well. Look to hear more about new committees and how you can contribute in the coming months.
Back to that aloha spirit… Ed and Evie Savage… Yes! I know that the two of them have heartstrings in Hawaii as many of us do! They sure embody that kindness, harmony, humility, pleasantness and patience! Ed and I have served on the club board together over the last four and a half years and he continues to be such a positive force! Ed is now serving as Secretary, but really, he is ‘Chief Networking Officer’, bringing resources forward with his virtual rolodex always at the ready. And Evie! Has anyone worked harder, with more grace and positive energy for the club than she has? How many member welcome lunches have they sponsored for us? What a joy to share this club with the Savages!
I hope you enjoy this edition of “The 1919”. I find it to be a coffee table must have especially for the convenience of keeping up with our jam-packed calendar! There’s so much to enjoy together! Once again, aloha! I wish all the best to you and your family.
Jean Pfeiffer University Club President
Dear Members,
Summer is in full swing at the University Club of Santa Barbara, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on the incredible community we’ve built together. Over the past five years, we’ve seen remarkable growth—not just in membership, but in the energy and spirit that define our Club.
Together, we’ve launched new traditions, expanded our programming, and welcomed fresh ideas, all while honoring the legacy of our historic home. The vibrancy of our community and the strength of our shared commitment to the Club’s mission have never been more evident.
As we look to the future, our focus is clear: to preserve and protect the University Club for generations to come. Whether it’s through thoughtful restoration, compelling events, or fostering deeper member engagement, every effort we make today ensures that this special place remains a cherished gathering space for years to come. None of this would be possible without you—our dedicated members. Your passion, warmth, and support make this the most exceptional membership community in Santa Barbara. Thank you for being the very best part of the Club.
Mark your calendars for our Annual Summer Soirée on August 16th—a signature celebration not to be missed! This year, we pay tribute to Santa Barbara: The American Riviera and the rich local history that weaves the University Club so deeply into the cultural fabric of our city. With vibrant cuisine, live music, and meaningful connections, this festive evening is always a member favorite. Be sure to sign up early to reserve your spot!
We’re also taking the fun beyond our walls this season with a series of fantastic off-property excursions. Join us for an evening of lawn bowling, a behind-thescenes tour of the historic Lobero Theatre, and a lively happy hour followed by a polo match at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. Chef Tony will also be stepping out of the kitchen and into the community with guided visits to Santa Barbara’s Tuesday Farmers Market. He’ll lead small groups through the market to meet local growers, handpick ingredients, and return to the Club to prepare a specially curated three-course dinner. It’s a uniquely local experience not to be missed.
Our Speaker Series continues to impress with thought-provoking presentations. This summer, we welcome two standout talks on architecture and preservation—the first from Nicole Hernandez, followed by Anthony Grumbine. We’re also thrilled to feature our very own UClub member, Vicky Feinstein, who will share insights from her much-anticipated new book.
The Wine & Spirits Society has curated an exciting lineup of summer events, including the return of our popular boutique wine tasting, a special evening with author Adam McHugh discussing his new wine book paired with a tasting from Story of Soil, and a season finale wine dinner with Tercero Wines—always a Club favorite.
The Mah Jongg Club meets to play twice a month (all levels welcome!), and we’ve added a special Mah Jongg event, Mah Jongg & Merriment, which is a fun afternoon of playing Mah Jongg and, afterwards, enjoying socializing with one another.
We're also offering expert-led classes with instructors Cynthia McClelland and Sandra Walther (Santa Barbara Mah Jongg)—including Beginner Classes for those interested in learning American Mah Jongg and an Intermediate Strategy session specifically tailored for more experienced players.
The Performing Arts Society continues to host its monthly Luncheon Roundtable with guest speakers, and on September 25, the group will also present the absurdist British comedy, Alas Poor Fred—a staged reading featuring UClub member BW Stark and Marilyn Gilbert.
Our affinity groups are growing each month! If you’re interested in joining—or helping us launch potential new groups, we’d love to hear from you.
And of course, no summer is complete without our beloved annual celebrations: Lobster Boil, Bastille Day, Fiesta, and Oktoberfest—each bringing its own festive flair to the Club.
Here’s to a summer filled with friendship, discovery, and unforgettable moments at your Club!

During the last minute, pull the shrimp out, and add the butter and garlic. Switch the oven to broil and broil until lightly charred. Set the shrimp aside.
3.Heat tortillas for about 30 seconds on each side, or until lightly golden. For a charred finish: You can use tongs to place the tortilla directly over a gas burner on medium-low heat for a few seconds per side, until lightly charred. For best results, transfer heated tortillas to a clean kitchen towel or tortilla warmer to keep them warm and soft until serving.
4. To make the crema, mix all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth, adding more jalapeños as desired.
5. To make the mango salsa, toss everything in a bowl and add a pinch of sea salt.
6. Spread/drizzle the cream onto the tortillas, add the lettuce, avocado, and shrimp onto each tortilla. Top with the mango salsa and cilantro.

We are proud to introduce our newest reciprocal partner - The Cardiff & County Club. As always, we continue to forge exciting new partnerships every year with new social, university, athletic, yacht, and other clubs here and abroad. Is there a club you frequent that is not on our list? Let us know!
Located in the heart of Cardiff, the Cardiff and County Club has been a testament to tradition and style since 1866. The Club's first building ranged from St. Mary Street to Westgate Street. In its early days, the Club shared a kitchen with the hotel, giving it the nickname of the “Hotel Club.”
In 1873, out of a desire for independence and a bigger space, the Club relocated next door. Another move followed in 1892, although the exact reasons remain unknown because of missing records. The Club’s current home, much larger and spacious than before, mirrors the Club's growing presence. It is listed as a Grade II historic building because of its representation of late Victorian splendor and it remains a focal point of Cardiff's landscape.
The Club has long been a favorite meeting place for business leaders and professionals, a tradition that began with its inaugural President, a senior Cardiff solicitor whose great-grandson today serves as a Trustee. When the Exchange Club in Cardiff Docks shut its doors, a number of its members, particularly those from the shipping industry, found themselves a home here, adding further to the maritime and commercial heritage of the Club.
With its coveted close proximity to the Cardiff Arms Park and the Principality Stadium, the Club continues to thrive, especially on Rugby International match days, when tradition and camaraderie are on full display.

If you’ve dined with us during lunch, chances are you’ve seen Gabe Lopez in action. He's always moving with purpose and his friendly demeanor helps to create the welcoming atmosphere our members enjoy.
Gabe started at the University Club in February 2025 and he works hard to give our guests a quality dining experience. Gabe ensures that the tables are properly set, the stemware and silverware is polished, and water glasses are always filled. When asked what he enjoys the most about working at the Club, Gabe exclaims, “The food! And definitely the people. I really enjoy working with such an awesome team.”
Gabe is also a full-time student at Santa Barbara City College studying Kinesiology. His goal is to become a physical therapist or to pursue a degree in medical science. He says his dream is to be able to help others live healthier, more active lives.
Say hello to Gabe when you see him next—he is just one of the friendly faces that makes the University Club dining experience truly unique!
Castro-Santana,
Behind every delicious meal stands a good kitchen staff—and Uvaldo Castro-Santana is one of the unsung heroes working behind the scenes to make it all possible.
Uvaldo joined the University Club team in January of 2025 and has been a star employee from the start. He has been a hardworking, reliable member of the kitchen staff and his co-workers describe him as dependable and a team player.
When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Uvaldo answers, "I love the Club's environment, the friends that I've made in the kitchen, and the food is delicious."
Uvaldo prides himself on being a part of the UClub family, one clean plate at a time. Make sure to say hello to Uvaldo if you see him.
Tucked in the heart of downtown, the University Club is more than just a gathering place—it’s a living part of Santa Barbara’s cultural and architectural heritage. Recognized as a Structure of Merit by the City’s Historic Landmarks Commission in 2019, our Clubhouse is both a treasured architectural gem and a cultural landmark that quietly anchors community traditions while reflecting the broader heritage of this historic city.
But what does it mean to be a Structure of Merit?
In Santa Barbara, this designation is awarded to properties that make a meaningful contribution to the city’s architectural or historical fabric. It formally recognizes cultural significance—whether through design, craftsmanship, notable associations, or a lasting presence in the city’s evolution. The University Club proudly embodies all these criteria. Most notably, the owl sculptures that adorn our front entry offer not only visual charm but symbolic resonance – distinguishing our building within the region’s iconic Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style. The Club’s architectural integrity and its century-long role as a hub for civic and intellectual pursuits have only deepened its historic importance.
Remodeled in 1922 by architect (and fellow Club member) Winsor Soule, the Clubhouse exemplifies the Spanish Colonial Revival aesthetic that has come to define much of Santa Barbara’s visual identity. From its iconic red-tiled roof and hand-hewn ceiling beams to its inviting interiors that echo with generations of conversation, the building stands as a testament to thoughtful design and enduring purpose.
A Structure of Merit designation also recognizes the significance of the notable people associated with the building or property—whether they are members, past or present, or the visionary designers who shaped its form. Our original gardens were designed by Ralph Tallent Stevens (namesake of Stevens Park and Tallant Road) and Lockwood de Forest. Due to the importance of the design team—Soule, Stevens, and de Forest—the original
architectural drawings for the University Club are preserved in the Architecture and Design Collection at UCSB. This collection is one of North America’s premier architectural archives, alongside the Getty and the Canadian Centre for Architecture.
Over the decades, the Club has welcomed scholars, artists, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders. It has served as a stage for public discourse, private celebration, and meaningful connection. Today, it proudly continues this tradition—where history and community meet through our events, programs, and daily gatherings. But preserving this historic space is about more than bricks and mortar—it’s about honoring the stories, values, and spirit that define who we are.
In the months ahead, we’ll explore new ways to celebrate and sustain our Club’s legacy: walking tours of local architectural landmarks, educational partnerships, and the possible formation of a member-driven historical society in support of our preservation foundation. These initiatives will help safeguard the Club’s future while honoring its remarkable past. We invite all members to take pride in our historic home—and to help champion its place in Santa Barbara’s past, present, and future.
