From Our Desks To You: Dear Members, It is an honor to step into the role of President of the University Club of Santa Barbara. Each day, I’m reminded of how special this community is and how much life and spirit our members bring to the Club. I would like to thank our past President, Jean Pfeiffer, a strong and gracious leader, who brought out the best in our Board and committees.

Jean guided the Club through a steady period of growth with vision and heart, and we are grateful for her presence.

Looking ahead to 2026, I’m energized by the momentum we’ve built.

Our Board has been thoughtfully establishing strategic priorities to support the Club’s long-term strength and to ensure that our programming, facilities, and member experience continue to evolve in meaningful ways. We are pleased to welcome four new Board members whose talents and perspectives will further strengthen our leadership. I am equally grateful for our General Manager Sarah Rudd and her outstanding staff who create the friendly and joyful atmosphere we all 4 THE 1919 MAGAZINE | WINTER 2026

value. Their daily efforts truly form the backbone of the University Club.

Our committees have also played a vital role in the Club’s continued success. Committee members have given countless hours to planning engaging events, improving operations, and enhancing member outreach. Their dedication and creativity enrich every corner of the Club and help create the sense of belonging that defines our Club.

Our offerings have expanded with new affinity groups, additional activities, and exciting events both at the Club and out in the community, providing more opportunities for connection and friendship.

Our cherished traditions remain, with fresh ideas and thoughtful improvements added to benefit us all. I encourage you to explore our 2026 calendar, join us for the many wonderful gatherings ahead, and, most of all, I look forward to seeing you at the Club!

Dear Members, As I reflect on this past year, I am filled with gratitude and pride.

What an incredible year it has been for our Club. 2025 brought tremendous growth, fresh perspectives, and an outpouring of wonderful ideas from so many of you, inspiring new activities, events, and opportunities.

Our membership continues to grow, and with each new member, our Club is further enriched. You represent the very best of Santa Barbara, and together you create a community that uplifts one another and those around us. Time and again, I am reminded that this Club is more than a gathering place - it is a welcoming home where enduring friendships are formed, fond memories are made, and passions, ideas, and experiences are shared.

Looking ahead, I am excited to see our membership continue to flourish into an even more supportive, engaged, and active community. Quite simply, together you make this the place to be in Santa Barbara a truly warm, welcoming space to connect, celebrate, and grow together.

Of course, no year at the Club would be complete without exceptional dining. I know we all look forward to more of the wonderful seasonal menus, Chef’s Specials, and other delights that Chef Tony Figueroa and his talented team continue dish up for us.

This year we will also be focusing on our Centennial Campaign. Under the banner of “Honoring the Past. Preserving the Future,” we will raise funds together to preserve and enhance our historic Clubhouse. More than just a building, our Clubhouse represents a legacy of excellence, generosity, and fellowship, shaped by generations who believed in the power of shared spaces to enrich lives. Now, through the Centennial Campaign, we have the opportunity to honor that legacy while preparing our Clubhouse for the next century. With your support, we can ensure our shared home meets the needs of our membership today and for years to come. Judy Foreman: Regency Magic Returns as University Club Celebrates Jane Austen’s 250th Birthday Jane Austen would have turned 250 years old this year, and her enduring charm was unmistakably alive for a celebratory British afternoon tea at the University Club of Santa Barbara.

Hosted by the University Club and its member groups — the Performing Arts Society, the Book Lover’s Club and the Writer’s Circle — the Dec. 2 event was organized by club member Anne Luther and styled to feel as if guests had stepped straight into Pride and Prejudice.

Representatives from Ensemble Theatre Company, among them executive artistic director Scott DeVine and director Robert Kelly, shared highlights from their upcoming West Coast premiere of The Complete Works of Jane Austen, Abridged, which opened at the New Vic on Dec. 4.

The show, they explained, offers a fast-paced, witty and youthful spin on Austen’s novels.

Adding to the theatrical spirit, University Club members George Konstantinow and Bruce Stark, a former Broadway producer, performed lively readings as Pride and Prejudice characters Fitzwilliam Darcy, aka Mr. Darcy; Charles Bingley; William Collins; and Mr. Bennet.

Cast members from the Ensemble production also entertained the crowd with excerpts, demonstrating how three actors manage to portray a dozen characters, including humorous versions of themselves.

About 65 attendees arrived dressed in Regency era costumes, lending the room a timeless elegance.

Door prizes carried a Jane Austen theme, and traditional afternoon tea was served, complete with tea sandwiches, assorted scones, lemon curd, whipped cream and, of course, several varieties of tea.

Austen, an 18th-century novelist whose works humorously and sharply examine the constraints placed on women in the English gentry, published her six novels anonymously at a time when women were expected to pursue marriage rather than careers.

Today, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma and Austen’s other works continue to enchant readers and inspire countless adaptations.

The afternoon proved that her wit, romance and social insight still resonate — 2½ centuries after her birth.

A reminder to all members to ensure your spots when planning to dine at the Club. While we are always happy to welcome walk-ins, tables do sell out and reservations are strongly encouraged. Members can book a table for up to 6 guests online or through the mobile member app (space permitting). For larger groups, reservations are required and can be made by giving us a call or via email. We are typically able to seat up to 10 guests at one table –be sure to reserve one of our limited larger tables in advance. Larger parties will be split into two –or more– adjacent tables to ensure our standards of service are met.

Bar Hours: Double The Happy Hour!

Named for the year our beloved Club was founded, 'The 1919' Bar is staffed from 4:00pm-8:00pm, with "happy hour" running for not 1, but 2 hours, from 4:00pm-6:00pm every Tuesday-Friday! The perfect setting for drinks with family, friends, or colleagues, to come in and relax after a long day, or to socialize with fellow members. Be sure to try any of our seasonal specialty cocktails or one of the non-alcoholic drinks! (Food service begins at 5:00pm)

No Corkage Thursdays & Free Wine Fridays

You are always welcome to bring your own bottle(s) of wine (not currently listed on our wine list please) when you dine at the University Club. Corkage fees are waived every Thursday at dinner for up to two 750ml bottles per visit. Enjoy a free glass of wine with your lunch every Friday.

From Our Kitchen to Yours Hearty Tuscan White Bean Soup When the chill is in the air there is nothing like a hearty, nourishing soup, and this one hits the spot! Not only is it warm and delicious, but it is also packed with plantbased protein. It's the perfect vegetarian soup recipe for winter time energy.

INGREDIENTS: • ¼ Cup Olive Oil, extra virgin • 1 Small Onion, diced • 2 Medium Shallots, chopped • 4 Cloves Garlic, mashed • 2 Carrots, chopped into coins • 2 Celery Stalks, diced

• 2 Bay Leaves • 1 Tablespoon Italian Seasoning • ½ Teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes • 5-6 Cups Vegetable Broth • ½ Teaspoon Sea Salt • ¼ Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

• 3 15 Ounce Cans Cannellini Beans, • 3 Cups Fresh Spinach drained and rinsed

DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat ¼ cup olive oil in a large pot over medium-low heat.

2. Dice 1 small onion, 2 shallots, and 4 cloves garlic. Add to the pot and sauté for 3–4 minutes until onion is soft.

3. Chop 2 carrots and 2 celery stalks. Add them to the pot and cook, stirring, for another 7–10 minutes.

4. Rinse and drain 3 cans of cannellini beans, then add to the pot.

5. Add 2 bay leaves, 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning, ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes, 5–6 cups vegetable broth, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper.

6. Bring the soup to a boil, then lower the heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.

7. Remove the bay leaves and discard them.

8. Scoop out about 2 cups of soup and blend it until smooth and creamy. (Use a blender.)

9. Pour the blended soup back into the pot and stir it in.

10. Add 3 cups of fresh spinach and stir until the spinach wilts.

11. Serve in bowls, optionally with fresh parsley and crusty bread.

Meet Our University Club Staff Cameron Marley - Server December Employee of the Month!

With his affable and courteous nature, Cameron Marley (24) is a member favorite, be it waiting tables or serving up the occasional drink behind the bar. A native of Goleta, Cameron has two older siblings – a brother and a sister. He attended Dos Pueblos High School and Santa Barbara City College. “I started taking computer classes in high school and my AP Comp Sci teacher my senior year thought I should try it out,” he says with his usual modesty about pursuing a degree in Computer Science.

Cameron started at the University Club as a busser. “I didn’t have restaurant experience,” he notes, but has since Cameron Marley with his moved up to the server position, which he has been doing girlfriend Anna for the past two years. “On very rare occasions I’m behind the bar,” he notes, “but usually only for small weddings.” Cameron especially loves serving during Wine Maker's Dinners. “It’s always cool to see what Chef Tony is preparing for the food courses!” he enthuses.

Cameron’s favorite thing about working at the University Club is his coworkers. “Working in a restaurant can be stressful and chaotic at times,” he notes, “but we always have each other’s backs and are helping out where we are needed.”

When he is not at the Club working he can be found playing golf on the weekends or going on small day trips with his girlfriend, Anna, whom he met way back in the fourth grade – although they did not start dating until after they reconnected in their first year of college, four and half years ago. Cameron also loves skateboarding, traveling, golfing, hiking, trying new restaurants with Anna, and being in nature.

Cameron appreciates living here. “I love how close to the beach and mountains we are,” he says.

“The accessibility to a lot of fun things to do in our free time keeps me here!” He does, however, also love traveling. “My two favorite trips were to Italy and Panama,” he relates. ”I loved the small town in Italy my girlfriend and I stayed in. We got to try delicious food and hangout with locals at the beach. It was by the coast and had a similar feeling to Santa Barbara. I also loved traveling to Panama with my best friend who grew up there. He got to show me the rain forest, beaches, different food, and the night life. It was extremely fun for my first time out of the country.”

Cameron doesn’t know where he will be in 5-10 years but “hopefully it’s with my girlfriend starting a family and hopefully my future career!”

Spotlight On Our Partners One of the perks of membership at the University Club of Santa Barbara are our reciprocal partnerships, allowing members to enjoy the luxury and amenities of a private club wherever their travels may take them, here in the United States and abroad. Club member Kirsten Ellis recently visited the University Club of Chicago and filed this report: Several weeks ago, I had the pleasure of spending a few nights at the wonderful University Club of Chicago, beautifully situated on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Monroe Street in the heart of downtown. The Club overlooks Millennium Park (yes, that Bean), sits directly across from the Art Institute of Chicago, and is an easy stroll to Navy Pier, the Field Museum, the Aquarium, and other iconic landmarks. In short: location, location, location.

Much like our own University Club of Santa Barbara, the University Club of Chicago was founded around 1900 by a group of college graduates from a variety of education institutions who shared a love of intellectual and cultural pursuits. And—also like our U Club—its members purchased the property for their clubhouse in the early 1900s and turned to two of their own members, architects William Holabird and Martin Roche, to design it. The result is a stunning 13-story Gothic-style architectural masterpiece. The Chicago Club, again like ours, is memberowned and Board-driven, and offers a robust calendar of educational, cultural, social events, and special-interest groups.

Another immediate point of kinship: from the moment you walk through the doors, you feel an unmistakable sense of warmth and collegiality—emanating from the stately wood-paneled interiors and reinforced by the genuinely friendly and helpful staff.

Now, a fair warning: the University Club of Chicago is big. With more than 3,000 members, it includes four entire floors dedicated to “the hotel,” featuring 59 richly appointed guest rooms.

It also boasts four distinct dining rooms and bar areas. These range from the charmingly kitschy College Hall cafeteria—think an elegant East Coast private college dining hall with long communal tables and classic wood paneling—to the edgy, modern Parliament bistro, which feels like an upscale, farm-to-table Eataly with spectacular lake views.

Each morning, I claimed a breakfast perch in the “Living Room,” a gracious and expansive space filled with cozy seating areas, leather chairs, bookshelves, and flat-screen TVs—ideal for lingering on a chilly Chicago morning. This lounge space opens into an inviting bar and dining area where members can choose between high-top communal tables or smaller, round tables tucked beside a roaring fireplace. Interestingly, the Living Room seemed especially busy in the mornings, for the breakfast crowd, and also in the evenings when a lively crowd convened for “happy hour” and cocktail specials. (While I was there, they featured the "Deacon Blues" cocktail - a tantalizing blend of Islay scotch, Alpine amaro, blood orange and Peychaud's).

The amenities are equally impressive. On the lower level, there’s a five-lane lap pool, whirlpools, steam and sauna rooms, and a serene yoga—or “mind/body”—studio offering multiple (free) classes daily. The fifth floor houses a golf center with full-swing simulators and a pro shop.

Higher up, on the 11th and 12th floors, you’ll find cardio equipment, Pelotons, six international squash courts, and a hardball doubles court. Even the 13th floor—the very top—has its own high-intensity training center with weights, machines, and separate men’s and women’s facilities.

Did I take full advantage of all this fitness glory? Not exactly. Between visiting my daughter (who recently moved to Chicago) and attending the Paul McCartney concert at the impressive United Center, my schedule was full. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed walking up the stairs to explore the upper floors and facilities, peeking onto the “Gallery” outdoor terrace with its breathtaking lake views, catching up on emails in the magnificent Library by the fireplace, and treating myself to a massage at the Mind/Body center.

Bottom line: it’s truly a privilege to visit the University Club of Chicago, and I encourage everyone to find an excuse to go! My room was lovely, the food was excellent, and—perhaps most importantly—the warmth of the staff and fellow members made me feel completely at home. It felt familiar in all the best ways… just on a slightly grander (and taller!) scale.
