From Our Desks To You: Dear Members, In my final letter to you as President of the Board, I want to once again express what a tremendous honor it has been to serve alongside our board at the helm of this fabulous Club. You, our members, truly make our club remarkable and exciting. I’ve seen so much positive change embraced by Sarah and her team!

The culture of continuous improvement has really taken hold and of that, I am very proud.

I’m truly grateful to the dedicated staff who work tirelessly on our behalf, bringing us so many exceptional experiences and moments, and to the countless members who give so generously of their time and talents –be it through roles on committees or the board, or through your dedication and participation as engaged and active members. The enthusiasm and care for our shared values and traditions warms my heart.

Our Club is a place where community flourishes, and that is thanks to each and every one of you. I look forward to staying involved supporting my successor and the board. I’m very enthusiastic about the slate of new board members on the ballot thanks to our nominating committee’s thoughtful work.

It’s an exciting time, and I’m confident the Club’s future remains in excellent hands.

As we head into the final months of the year, I find myself once again eagerly anticipating all the wonderful holiday traditions that make this season at the Club so special. From the spooky fun –and delicious themed cocktails – of the popular week-long Voodoo Lounge, to our Friendsgiving feast, our joyous holiday social, and the always elegant holiday dinner, this time of year brings such warmth, joy, and connection. the holidays and is so cozy and welcoming.

There really is no better place to come to enjoy the fall spirit or embrace our gorgeous winter by the fire than our Club. If you haven’t yet experienced the Club in its full holiday splendor, you are in for a real treat. I have heard fellow members describe it as the best place in town to bring clients, colleagues, friends, and family for a celebration meal or drink during the festive season. The atmosphere and camaraderie are unparalleled!

I am so impressed by the work done thus far on our Centennial Campaign –an effort that not only honors our Club’s rich legacy but also ensures its continued vitality for ourselves and for generations to come. I encourage you all to join me in supporting this important endeavor. Remember, deductions through our foundation are tax deductible so please consider a generous contribution before year end! I can’t wait to see what specialty cocktail our team has planned to mark the campaign – all net proceeds will go to support the campaign! Be sure to snag your University Club swag as well, on display in the clubhouse foyer. For more details on how to contribute, please see pages 28-29 in this issue.

Thank you once again for the opportunity to serve as your President. It was an unforgettable experience for me. I hope to see many of you at the Club in the coming weeks to share a toast, a story, or simply the warmth of good company, and to foster ever more lasting and cherished memories together.

Dear Members, As we move into the final season of 2025 there is so much to reflect on and celebrate at the University Club of Santa Barbara. Our Centennial Campaign is in full swing and the enthusiasm and generosity of our members are already making a lasting impact as we look ahead to the future of our historic Clubhouse.

If you haven’t yet explored the foyer displays, I encourage you to take a look at the literature, historical drawings, and University Club swag available for purchase – all net proceeds directly support the Campaign. We’ll also be updating our fundraising progress with the thermometer display, and while we still have a way to go, I am confident that together we will reach our goal. In addition, keep an eye out for a special featured cocktail on our menu, with proceeds benefiting the Campaign as well.

You’ve likely noticed many new faces working throughout the Club this fall. While we were sad to see some of our long-term employees move on, we are thrilled to support their next chapters –whether pursuing further education or advancing their careers– and are equally delighted to welcome a new generation of staff who are eager to serve and grow with us.

popular Voodoo Lounge, transforming our Bar into a Halloween haunt during the last week of October. To keep the energy going throughout the month, members can join us for Local Ghost Lore Trivia Night, take in a film with the Cinéphile Club, and enjoy a convivial evening at our Australian Wine Paulée.

In November, our programming continues to shine. The Cinéphile Club reconvenes, and the Wine & Spirits Society will once again showcase our popular Boutique Wine Tasting, followed by a very special Kunin Winemaker Dinner. Of course, we’ll also gather in gratitude for our cherished Friendsgiving dinner. Later in the month, don’t miss a lively evening of Holiday Trivia, blending seasonal cheer with a touch of friendly competition.

December offers a warm and elegant close to the year. We’ll celebrate literature, theater, and tradition at our Jane Austen’s Birthday Tea, bring families together at our beloved Holiday Social, and share fine dining at our Holiday Dinner. We’ll also gather for Hanukkah candle lighting, a tradition that continues to bring light and meaning to the season. Finally, we’ll ring in the New Year in style with our New Year’s Eve Party, a night of celebration befitting both the close of a successful year and the excitement of what’s to come.

Reminder: Reservations & Seating Policies

A reminder to all members to ensure your spots when planning to dine at the Club. While we are always happy to welcome walk-ins, tables do sell out and reservations are strongly encouraged. Members can book a table for up to 6 guests online or through the mobile member app (space permitting). For larger groups, reservations are required and can be made by giving us a call or via email. We are typically able to seat up to 10 guests at one table –be sure to reserve one of our limited larger tables in advance. Larger parties will be split into two –or more– adjacent tables to ensure our standards of service are met.

Bar Hours: Double The Happy Hour!

Named for the year our beloved Club was founded, 'The 1919' Bar is staffed from 4:00pm-8:00pm, with "happy hour" running for not 1, but 2 hours, from 4:00pm-6:00pm every Tuesday-Friday! The perfect setting for drinks with family, friends, or colleagues, to come in and relax after a long day, or to socialize with fellow members. Be sure to try any of our seasonal specialty cocktails or one of the non-alcoholic drinks! (Food service begins at 5:00pm)

No Corkage Thursdays & Free Wine Fridays

You are always welcome to bring your own bottle(s) of wine (not currently listed on our wine list please) when you dine at the University Club. Corkage fees are waived every Thursday at dinner for up to two 750ml bottles per visit. Enjoy a free glass of wine with your lunch every Friday.

We serve steaks, burgers, and salmon medium rare. If you would like yours prepared a different way, please let your server know. The same goes for any of our dishes - help us ensure you are satisfied by letting us know your preferences. Your servers are happy to answer any questions you may have.

From Our Kitchen to Yours Stuffed Acorn Squash Chef Tony Figueroa

As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, this cozy autumn dish brings warmth to your table with every bite. Made with fresh, local ingredients at their seasonal peak, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the flavors of fall. Make as is or substitute your favorite ingredients for a dish that is comforting, hearty, and full of rustic charm.

INGREDIENTS:

2 acorn squash (halved & seeded)

1 lb Italian sausage (chicken or turkey)

1 apple (chopped)

1 small onion (chopped)

1 cup mushrooms (chopped)

2 cloves garlic (minced)

Herbs: sage or thyme

Spices: salt, pepper, nutmeg, allspice

Olive oil

½ cup grated Parmesan

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Cut acorn squash in half lengthwise and scoop out seeds. Brush insides with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and roast cut-side up for 35–40 minutes until tender.

2. While squash roasts, cook sausage in a skillet until browned. Add onion, mushrooms, apple, and garlic. Season with salt, pepper, nutmeg, and allspice. Cook until softened, 7–10 minutes.

Stir in herbs.

3. Scoop a little squash flesh from each half, chop, and mix it into the sausage mixture with half the Parmesan.

4. Lower oven to 375°F. Fill squash halves with mixture, top with remaining Parmesan, and bake 15 minutes until golden.

LOIs & Reservations for Reciprocal Visits Ahead of Time - Mandatory

A reminder that you must get a Letter of Introduction (LOI) from us for each and every Reciprocal Club visit.

We do ask for 2-3 business days to prepare and send your LOIs. A reminder also that you are responsible for making and managing any and all reservations with our reciprocal partners yourselves.

Cancellation Policies

A reminder that we do have a 72-hour cancellation policy. For special events and meals, including but not limited to special menu dinners, Club events, activities, socials, single-seating meals, and more, cancellations can be made up to 72 hours before the event only. Cancellations less than 72 hours before will be charged in full for you and all guests.

Reservations after a reservation deadline are not permitted without approval. Waitlist may be in effect.

Meet Our University Club Staff Kaylee Burwell, Server Kaylee Rose Burwell (19) is kindness and purpose personified. Here at the University Club she is known for welcoming everyone who steps through the doors with a grace and warmth that belie her age. Kaylee started her University Club journey in the spring of 2021, first as a hostess and later bussing tables, running food, and finally as a fullfledged server. “I was even the official bingo caller for bit,” she laughs affably. “I had to be really loud!”

Kaylee is studying environmental sciences at Santa Barbara City College, with aspirations to go into environmental management and protection. “I honestly love my major,” she Kaylee Burwell relates, her eyes lighting up with sparks of true delight. “The science of it is super fascinating. I love the biology classes. It’s hard –all the same classes as premed– but so exciting.” More than anything, Kaylee can’t wait to get into the field, into hands-on work. She is eager to take advantage of whatever opportunities become available to her.

Outside of school Kaylee is a true SoCal girl – she loves to go to the beach, surfs, goes to the gym, and more recently plays guitar. “I’ve always loved music,” she notes (pun intended). “I wanted to be a little Taylor Swift as a kid.” A few years back Kaylee was out thrifting and saw an old guitar. “It was missing strings, but I loved it. I took a photo to send to my parents, but I didn’t buy it.” Imagine Kaylee’s surprise when the guitar showed up under the Christmas tree as her (December baby) birthday present! “I hung it on my wall,” Kaylee recounts, “for about two years, until this past winter break. I had some time and decided to finally go for it!” Kaylee also surfs.

Her father, Jason Burwell, was an avid competitive surfer and got Kaylee and her sister riding waves early.

Kaylee loves working at the University Club. “I especially enjoy the members, and the staff – they have been my family here,” she smiles. Kaylee appreciates being able to get to know the members more intimately over the years and developing a real rapport with everyone. “The Club is such a wonderful and welcoming place,” Kaylee says. “But my absolute favorite time at the Club is during the holidays. We have seven – seven! – Christmas trees and it is so warm and cozy with fires in the fireplaces and all the camaraderie and cheer. There is no better place to be.”

Sadly, we will all have to miss Kaylee soon, as she is leaving in February for a semester abroad, in Rome, Italy. We wish Kaylee all the best on her upcoming adventure. In the meantime, Kaylee is excited to continue to serve you and your guests here at the Club. “It is an honor and a real pleasure,” she says with the genuine enthusiasm and kindheartedness that so personifies her.

Spotlight On Our Partners One of the perks of membership at the University Club of Santa Barbara are our reciprocal partnerships, allowing members to enjoy the luxury and amenities of a private club wherever their travels may take them, here in the United States and abroad. Today we are proud to showcase one of our older partners, the University Club of Washington DC. The University Club of Washington DC is one of America’s oldest and finest private city clubs and is currently ranked number 12 on the Platinum Clubs of America list. Its rich history begins with the founding of the Club in 1904.

William Howard Taft, who later became President of the United States and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was the Club’s first president. The four pillars of fellowship, intellectual pursuits, fine dining, and athletics form the foundation of The University Club of Washington, DC. Nestled just three blocks away from the White House in the heart of the nation's capital (and near museums, monuments, embassies, and other cultural attractions), the clubhouse spans across seven levels and is affectionately known as the "Mansion on Sixteenth Street." Reflecting the timeless Parisian architectural style synonymous with Pierre 'Peter' Charles L'Enfant, the visionary behind Washington, DC's design, the building boasts a brick and brownstone exterior and a cobblestone circle drive that leads to its entrance on Sixteenth Street. Erected in 1921 during The Roaring 20s, this clubhouse was dedicated by the distinguished World War I hero, General "Black Jack" Pershing.

Within the clubhouse confines today, one can find three charming dining rooms, 59 comfortable overnight guest rooms, a well-equipped fitness center, a convenient business center, a library, a heated indoor swimming pool, two vibrant squash courts, a HD multi-sport and golf simulator studio, a full-service day spa, and 13 private event rooms.

Club membership includes distinguished leaders in business, non-profit, government, and the arts, as well as ambassadors, justices of the Supreme Court, and clergy. Intellectual pursuits include programs and events that offer a rich variety of cultural, international, and educational activities, including a yearly Supreme Court Review, presentations by ambassadors and authors, and speakers who share their expertise on a range of subjects.
