From Our Desks To You:
Dear Members,
With the advent of summer and our perfect warm yet mild weather, I would like to share with you my excitement for the wonderful season ahead at our beloved University Club of Santa Barbara. It promises to be a season filled with vibrant activities, shared meals, refreshing drinks on our private Sola patio, celebrations, and new opportunities for networking and connection.
Our Club calendar is once again brimming with events designed to bring us all together! I am particularly excited about our new networking opportunities which aim to create even more opportunities for meaningful connections among our diverse membership. Whether you are a longstanding member or a recent addition to our community, there will be ample chances to forge new relationships and strengthen existing ones.
On that note, thank you again to our member Monica Lenches for orchestrating the perfect kickoff event for our new networking initiatives. This unique and exclusive Legacy Hour was nothing short of inspiring, bringing together a commanding cadre of professionals and thought leaders here at the Club. I loved it! It was truly galvanizing to witness such meaningful connections being fostered, and I eagerly anticipate more such events in the future. Take a look at some of the photos on page 17 from the event, and be sure to join us for the next one on September 18th!
Looking forward, be sure to peruse our Club calendar for all our beloved annual summer specials, as well as many new initiatives. I personally cannot wait for our much-anticipated annual End of Summer Soirée,
which will transport us to the enchanting Greek Isles this year! It promises to once again be a night of celebration and revelry under the stars, showcasing the best of our Club’s hospitality and the warmth of our community. Much like our incredible Holiday festivities, this event has become a Club Signature that keeps getting better and better!
Speaking of our community – I extend a warm welcome to all our fabulous new members! Your presence enriches our Club and contributes to making the University Club the premier destination in town for connecting with like-minded individuals and cultivating valuable relationships. Please feel free to reach out and let us know how we can help you become connected and involved!
But wait, there’s more! Have you seen the incredible special membership campaign we’ve launched? If not, be sure to take a look on pages 10-11of this magazine for more information! If you have friends, family, or colleagues interested in joining, now is the time! They don’t want to miss out on this opportunity so please connect them with Ammanjah or Sarah. They will be more than happy to answer any questions and get the ball rolling for them. This campaign will run for a limited time or until we reach our membership cap, so it’s really your best time to bring new friends and colleagues into our vibrant University Club family.
Together, let us fill this summer with unforgettable moments and lasting memories, here at your University Club of Santa Barbara.
Jean Pfeiffer University Club President
Dear Members,
As we welcome the warm embrace of summer, I am delighted to share exciting updates and upcoming events with you. Our community continues to thrive, and it's all thanks to your active participation and unwavering support.
First, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming attendance at our recent Member Recruitment Reception. Your enthusiasm and involvement made the event a resounding success, showcasing our Club and highlighting the current membership campaign. See pages 10-11 for more details on the campaign, and be sure to let your friends, family, and colleagues know as well! This campaign will run for a limited time or until we sell out.
We are also excited to introduce our summer menus and cocktails. Thank you to all who took the time to respond to our latest food and beverage survey. We received excellent feedback and are excited for you all to enjoy the updated seasonal menus coming out, including freshly sourced ingredients, exciting options for all diets, and both club classics and an array of specials.
This summer, we have a fantastic lineup of member events, with something for everyone. Our annual Lobster Boil kicks off the season with delicious food, live music, and a great opportunity to relax and socialize with fellow members. Next we transport you to France for Bastille Day, featuring traditional French fare prepared by Executive Chef David Rosner. July also brings a Distinguished Speaker Event from the Pearl Chase Society, our Boutique Wineries Tasting, a Member Appreciation Reception, and we’ll finish the month with the first of our traditional Fiesta celebrations - the Wednesday evening tequila tasting and menu specials.
August brings our second Fiesta celebration, featuring a full buffet dinner and performances by the official Fiesta Spirit and Junior Spirit dancers! And of course, August also means our big End of Summer Soirée! Send off the summer in style with one of the most fun and popular parties in town, with this year's Greek Isles theme.
On the Wine & Spirits front, in addition to July’s Boutique Wineries Tasting event (always fun and super popular with our members and your guests), this quarter, we will enjoy just the one Wine Maker's Dinner, in September, featuring Sanguis Wines. Not to worry, however, as we are excited to announce two new culinary events with nonalcoholic pairings. The first will be a three-course Chef's tasting menu, offering the option of zero-alcohol wine or traditional wine pairing. The second event will be a luncheon focused on the extraordinary Hallstein water. Elizabeth Hallstein will join us from Austria to educate us on this unique water, the only untouched water from source to bottle in the world.
September will be action-packed with another Member Recruitment event, continuing our commitment to sell out of proprietary memberships for the first time in the Club's history since 1919! The month also brings a SABER breakfast, a Distinguished Speaker event with Steve Gilbar discussing his new novel Montecito Noir, and our annual Oktoberfest celebration to close out the quarter.
If you have not attended a SABER breakfast speaker series, I highly recommend it. University Club members are exclusively invited to join these valuable networking mornings, held right here at the Club, aimed at enhancing the professional lives and skills of local business leaders.
Lastly, I want to extend a warm welcome to our new members who have joined us in recent months. We are thrilled to have you as part of our community and look forward to seeing you at our events. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance in getting acquainted with our offerings.
Thank you all for being a vital part of our club. Your engagement and enthusiasm are what make our Club special. I always say—we have the best members, and you truly embody the spirit of the Club. Here's to a summer filled with connections, celebratory moments, and growth for all.

Spotlight On Our Partners
University Club of Santa Barbara members enjoy the luxury and amenities of a private club wherever their travels take them. Reciprocal privileges extend to such clubs as the Oxford and Cambridge Club in London, the University Club of Chicago, the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles, the Olympic Club in San Francisco, and many other private, university, athletic, country, and yacht clubs across the nation and worldwide. Many offer overnight accommodations on par with the finest of hotels, exquisite dining, athletic facilities, and other amenities. University Club member Leslie Andrea Westbrook recently took advantage of our reciprocal agreements with two of our esteemed European partners. She shares a bit about her experiences at the Oxford and Cambridge Club in London, England and the Círculo Ecuestre Club in Barcelona, Spain below.
By Leslie Andrea Westbrook, University Club of Santa Barbara member and a longtime travel writer with a column in the Montecito Journal and an international auction broker (www.auctionliaison.com)
"One of the splendid perks of our University Club of Santa Barbara memberships are the reciprocal clubs throughout the globe. This past May, I took advantage of two of them, slumbering and dining at the lovely Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall in London’s tony Mayfair district in the West end, as well as dining with friends at the Círculo Equestre’s newly refurbished terrace restaurant in Barcelona, Spain which is housed in a wonderful, historic Belle Epoque style, four-story building in the heart of Barcelona’s shopping district. That club, set on the broad Avenguda Diagonal, which divides the city in two, was founded in 1856 by Catalonians with a penchant for horse riding.
Oxford and Cambridge Club, London
The Oxford and Cambridge Club house was designed by Sir Robert Smirke, the architect of the British Museum, and was completed in 1838. The Club is the result of several amalgamations, most recently between the United University Club of 1821 and the Oxford and Cambridge University Club, which was established nine years later. Former members include William Thackery and TS Elliot. Currently, Lord Sainsbury and Lord Patten are Honorary Members, as are the Chancellors of the two universities, the Vice Chancellors and most Heads of House along with His Majesty King Charles III, HM Queen Margrethe ΙΙ of Denmark, HM King Harald V of Norway and His Majesty King Philippe of the Belgians!
Guest rooms vary widely here. I booked a single room with a lovely view through a oval-shaped window. My accommodation felt like a cabin on a sea faring ship, with everything fitting in snuggly. There was a combo shower/tub – the tub designed for slightly smaller figures than mine, perhaps. There are larger rooms and suites, some with walk-in showers. A small desk, closet with a tea kettle and biscuits tucked in, TV and daily room service and complimentary newspaper delivered made it the perfect base for my week in London.
Getting to the rooms is another matter. There ARE two elevators – including an old-fashioned cage-style lift – but there are LOTS of stairs that go every which way and are a bit higgledy-piggledy – a bit of a challenge if you are heavy packer like me (there is help). Squash courts in the basement are popular with members and the younger set.
The best part of the club (besides members and guests, of course) are the stunning public rooms: The Coffee Room (where I had a superb Dove sole dinner with Parity Theatre director/dear friend Ludovica Villar-Hauser, also in London to direct a play), the handsome and terribly comfy North, South and Silent Libraries – and the Members Bar, where I met and mingled with a number of charming club members over gratis salty cocktail nibbles served with cocktails and wine. There’s also a sweet little greenery terrace where I enjoyed sunshine views.
A buffet breakfast is included, set in the grand Coffee Room surrounded by huge, recently restored historic oil portraits. A table is spread with cereals, croissants and pastries, fruit and yogurt. Coffee, tea and toast (served in toast racks) service is provided; the host and staff are most congenial.
The club is formal, but friendly: no “trainers”, i.e. tennis shoes, after 6 pm, which are generally not appreciated anywhere in the club except for on weekends. Decorum rules and it really does feel like stepping back to a more gentile and polite society. I shall happily return to jolly Olde England and the club that seems to have stopped in time."
Want to know how to access these and other reciprocal clubs across the nation and worldwide? • Take a look at the box on page 12 for instructions. • You can find the full list of our reciprocal partners online on our website - www.uclubsb.org
The Círculo Ecuestre Club, Barcelona

Meetings and events, formal and informal professional and cultural gatherings, offer activities and content of interest to members in a space where personal relationships and contacts arise naturally.
Prominent people from all walks of economic, political, social and cultural life visit and stay at the Círculo Ecuestres. The club currently has 1500 members and is the ideal place for reflection, dialogue, reading, comfort or social and business meetings. Meet Our UClub Staff
A True Artist Bringing Talent to Santa Barbara
Andres De La Cruz Candelario (32) hails from Mexico City. He arrived in Santa Barbara only two years ago, but already has made a mark in our local cultural scene, as well as the University Club kitchen.
In the kitchen here at the Club he is responsible for pizzas, salads, and desserts. A quick and earnest study, he learned the trade on the job, always taking pride in preparing each dish exactly as requested by our members.
In fact, Andres takes pride in everything he does, but nothing more so than in his family and his art. Andres works hard to help support his wife and two children – his 9 year old son and 6 year old daughter – in Mexico, while also continuing his studies online. "I was doing an arts study in Mexico before I came here," he relates. "I am still doing my studies while I am here, but online."
His true passion is his art – mainly dancing, although he also enjoys painting. "In Mexico I ran a youth dance group," Andres recounts. "We organized cultural events and events in the community. This is my dream – to finish my studies and to be able to continue to work in the community with my art."
It is also his art which offered him a lifeline and a connection to community here in Santa Barbara. "When I came here," Andres notes, "I was alone, and it was tough, being away from my family. I was depressed." Three months ago, however, he found the Xochipilli De Santa Barbara dance group. He auditioned and thanks to the expertise he brought with him from Mexico, he was immediately accepted. Not only that, after just a few short months with the group, he was asked if he wanted to participate "in a fiesta that is an important part of Santa Barbara culture," as he recounts. "I did not know what it was, but I now realize that is a big deal for Santa Barbara." Andres and the Xochipilli group had to audition, and were proud to be accepted to dance at Fiesta for this year's 100th anniversary. He is very excited, also for his family back in Mexico to see the video that will be taken of the performances, and a bit nervous for all of his colleagues who are coming to cheer him on. "We will dance in the general rehearsal on July 30th, and then we will perform on August 1st," he says.
Andres - from all of your friends and colleagues here at the University Club, we wish you good luck and all the best for your Fiesta performances! We look forward to seeing you dance on this important occasion.
