1919 - The year the UClub was founded. Pictured: Club members enjoyed a magnificent evening of magic and intrigue during our epic Magic Mansion event in January. It was truly spellbinding to see our beautiful Club transformed into such an awe-inspiring venue. Having the magicians from the Magic Castle in Hollywood here in Santa Barbara, at our Club, was an incredible treat. We can't wait for our next big event in August! From Our Desks To You:

Dear Members,

What a wonderful start to 2024 here at our beloved Club! No amount of rain and adverse weather could keep us down or dampen our UClub spirits. In fact, we were able to stay up and operational despite sustaining storm damage. Thank you to Sarah and her team for their daily and ongoing efforts on this front – critical to allowing us to carry out the plethora of seasonal events and activities that were on offer –Wine Maker Dinners and Boutique Winery Tastings, Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Dinner, our super fun St. Patrick’s Day party (did you get a chance to try the specialty cocktails and green beer?!), our annual Easter Sunday Brunch, member clubs and societies, and of course also drinks and meals with friends and business connections. The Club was so vibrant and abuzz with activity!

On top of all of that, the highlight of this past quarter was, hands down, our fantastical Magic Mansion evening. Seeing our Club transformed into a veritable Magic Castle was truly inspiring, and understandably the talk of the town. Take a look at the photos on page 25 to relive the magic! What a testament to our entire team who worked tirelessly to curate this exceptional event. Bravo! And, I have to say, to you, our members, for turning out in force! What a joy to see the Club so alive and bursting with energy. Bringing these elevated experiences to members and guests is definitely part of our strategic game plan, so stay tuned for future events!

Of course, our Club is always welcoming and active, no matter the season. Spring is in the air and summer just around the corner, with member favorites such as Mother’s Day Brunch and of course Summer Solstice on the horizon. This year the Solstice parade will once again make its way along

Santa Barbara Street and the Club will be open to give us all a space to grab a bite and enjoy some drinks. Take a look at the details and how to make reservations (required for lunch) on page 20.

I personally can’t wait to spend more sunny afternoons and balmy evenings enjoying our beautiful, private Sola patio! I love the ambiance Sarah creates for our wine dinners – 1st Thursdays! We all enjoy the opportunity to relax outdoors to live music with dinner on Wednesdays, or lunch meetings to take care of business or just catching up with friends (the free glass of wine with lunch on Fridays for members and your guests sure does help set the tone!). We are so lucky to have this secluded oasis in the heart of downtown for our enjoyment.

Let’s talk networking! The Club will be phasing in new networking opportunities over the next few months. Be sure to join us on May 22nd for a unique and exciting “Networking 2.0” Legacy Hour event (see page 24 for details). If you have not already been doing so, I also recommend taking advantage of University Club member spots at the monthly SABER breakfast speaker sessions. These breakfasts are a great way to kick off the morning once a month and to meet other local business folks from various industries and backgrounds (see page 24 for details).

As I write this letter and see everything on offer, I am once again filled with pride at what an amazing space we have all created here together. The University Club of Santa Barbara is a truly special place; a place where ideas are shared, connections are made, partnerships and friendships grow, and lasting memories are forged. I can’t wait to connect with friends and acquaintances - old and new - at the Club this spring!

6 THE 1919 MAGAZINE | SPRING 2024

Dear Members,

As the vibrant energy of spring fills the air, I am delighted to reach out to you with a heart full of excitement for the season ahead. At the University Club, we are buzzing with anticipation, eager to continue bringing you both cherished traditions and fresh, exciting opportunities.

While I hold a special fondness for the cozy warmth and festive spirit of holiday seasons, there’s something truly invigorating about the arrival of spring. With each crisp, sunny day, as flowers bloom and trees burst into blossom, the air is filled with the sweet melody of birdsong, ushering in a sense of renewal and optimism. It’s a time for fresh beginnings, a time when projects and ideas come alive with newfound vigor. I love welcoming more of you onto our patio, where drinks flow, culinary delights abound, and laughter and camaraderie fill the air.

As we embrace the spirit of spring, we eagerly anticipate upcoming events such as our cherished Mother’s Day Sunday Brunch and the Summer Solstice celebration. We are looking forward to incorporating more seasonally adjusted menu items throughout the year, more daily specials, and surprises galore, all designed to enhance your experience at the Club. (Be on the lookout for our Spring Menu coming out on April 16th!)

Additionally, we are committed to fostering networking and business connections, alongside our esteemed social activities. We invite you to join us for a special Legacy Hour networking event this quarter and also to explore with us how the Club can serve as your premier venue for client meetings, team gatherings, and business events. Stay tuned

for more exciting networking initiatives throughout the year.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the members who lead and contribute to our vibrant array of member social clubs and societies. From book clubs to writing societies, from backgammon to photography, and everything in between, your dedication enriches our community and enhances our collective experience. We are immensely grateful for your passions and leadership.

Our Club thrives because of each and every one of you. I encourage you to extend invitations to friends and colleagues to join us at our member recruitment reception in June – we always welcome new members who embody the spirit of our community. And don’t forget to mark your calendars for our Member Appreciation happy hours each quarter – it’s our way of celebrating you, the heartbeat of our Club.

As we eagerly anticipate the joys of spring, including the launch of our new and improved website and phone app, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for your continued support and engagement. Thank you for being an integral part of our Club family.

Spotlight On Our Partners

We are proud to introduce our newest reciprocal partners - The Denver Athletic Club in Denver, Colorado and the Down Town Association in New York City. As always, we continue to forge exciting new partnerships every year with new social, university, athletic, yacht, and other clubs here and abroad. Is there a club you frequent that is not on our list? Let us know!

The Down Town Association, chartered in 1859 is located at 60 Pine Street in the Financial District. The DTA is one of the five oldest private social clubs in New York City. The DTA maintains the distinction of occupying the same clubhouse longer than any other club in Manhattan. The Clubhouse was built in 1887 with an expansion having been completed in 1911. We are the sole social club in lower Manhattan.

Our membership of men and women is drawn from a diverse group of professions. Prospective members must be proposed and seconded by members of the Club, meet with and be approved by our Membership Committee and meet with and be approved by the Trustees before admission. All memberships are individual.

The Down Town Association’s members have included Franklin D. Roosevelt, a member from 1913 until his death in 1945, Grover Cleveland, four Secretaries of State, including John Foster Dulles, five Attorneys General, one Secretary of Defense and two Secretaries of War. Two of our members have served as Ambassador to the Court of St. James, one member served as Ambassador to Switzerland, one member as Ambassador to Luxembourg and one member served as Ambassador to Thailand. The Club has no political orientation, illustrated by the fact that two of the three men who ran against Roosevelt for the Presidency of the United States were also members of the Association.

We maintain reciprocal relations with the The Yale Club in New York City, as well as 130 of the finest clubs in the world.

Our Edwardian style clubhouse is open from 9 am Monday to Friday. Dinner is served Tuesday to Friday in our grill room. The main bar is also open Tuesday to Friday. Private dining and reception rooms are also available. A large wood paneled lounge and a gracious Reading Room are comfortable before and after meals. The Reading Room is available for remote work with complimentary coffee, tea and water. The Game Room has three pocket billiard tables as well as backgammon and poker tables. In the colder months, our wood burning fireplaces enhance the old world ambiance of the Clubhouse. We maintain a walk-in humidor and a wine cellar for members.

Meet Our UClub Staff

Captains Greg Williams & Jackson Taylor

Senior servers Greg Williams (59) and Jackson Taylor (26) are familiar faces at the University Club of Santa Barbara, known for their always-pleasant demeanors and efficient and capable service. Both Greg and Jackson are on deck not only for member meals and events, but also work private events and weddings at the Club. Particularly for the latter, both Greg and Jackson were recently appointed to be crew captains. In this new role they will be taking on the additional tasks of coordinating service and supporting our Front of House Manager Alena Gleich for some of the busier events. Congrats on the new role gents! So who are these UClub captains, and what do they get up to in their spare time? Read on to meet Greg and Jackson! Greg Williams moved to Santa Barbara when was 18, following one of his older sisters here. Greg was the youngest of 5 children - 2 older sisters and 2 older brothers - raised on a farm in Napa. Both his parents were teachers. "When I first moved here I was too young and missed my friends," Greg recounts. "I moved back to Napa, and then elsewhere, but somehow I always ended up back here." In fact, when Greg was older he moved to Florida for 10 years and later to Seattle (where his parents were originally from). He finally made it back to his beloved Santa Barbara four years ago.

Greg has worked in service and restaurants most of his life, "including everything from a high-end, 5-star restaurant, to a little beach sandwich shop, and everything in between," gaining invaluable experience - and experiences - along the way. During nearly 5 years at Domaine Chandon, for example, he received excellent training in fine dining. At the steak house in Florida with five dining rooms and a large crew he learned to hustle and multitask like no other. Greg's favorite restaurants to work at, however, were Italian. "The food and ambiance were always good, and I like the fast-paced feel," he smiles. Then, thinking about it a bit more, he adds – "but, then again, fine-dining is nice too - more intimate and slower-paced." In short, Greg loves it all. He especially appreciates being able to pour all of his years of experience across the board into his current role here at the University Club. "I like the fact that we are a private club. We get to build rapport with the members and really get to know what they like and don't like," he enthuses. "I like making our members feel at home." Greg also appreciates being part of the University Club team, noting that "we have a great crew and have been together a while now. That's special."

Greg's favorite part of service is walking around and making sure everything is ready and everyone is taken care of. "I used to bartend a bit," he admits, "but I don't like being stuck behind the bar. I need to be out and about taking care of people!"

Greg hopes that this will be his last service job and intends to retire here in Santa Barbara, enjoying the beaches, going hiking, and more. If he were to live elsewhere, however, he might enjoy Italy or the Greek Islands. Jackson Taylor was born and raised in 'the Goodland', aka Goleta, CA. A man of many hidden talents, Jackson attended Virginia Tech and earned a degree in aerospace engineering. He was even the lead engineer on a senior design team that took 2nd place in a NASA competition. "We had to design a plane for urban flight," Jackson

14 THE 1919 MAGAZINE | SPRING 2024
Greg Williams

recounts with a gleam in his eyes. It turns out, however, that the day-to-day work of engineering wasn't for Jackson, and he decided to change course. He currently studies law at Santa Barbara College of Law and hopes to go into patent law – "so I would still be using my engineering background," he notes. The oldest of five siblings, Jackson brings a pragmatic 'can-do, no-problem' attitude to all that he does. He ended up working at the University Club a bit by chance. His mom, Lacy Taylor, is our immediate past president. One day, while accompanying her to lunch here at the Club, he heard General Manager Sarah Rudd mention that the Club was looking for a busser for our 1st Thursday Wine Maker Dinners. Jackson needed a job; The Club needed a busser. "I said, 'oh, I'll do it,'" Jackson recounts. "And three years later, here I still am." Not only is Jackson still here, but he has become one of the Club's regular service staff, recently being appointed crew captain, mainly for weddings and other private events.

Jackson's favorite thing about working at the University Club are the people. "I work with really cool people," he says. "We have fun in and out of work and are friends, not just co-workers." As far as his favorite events to work at the Club, he particularly enjoys the 1st Thursday Wine Maker Dinners, noting that they are new each time and the ambiance is always special. "I also like that working here I get to be in an environment where there is good food, wine, and people," he adds, "rather than being behind a computer, sitting at a desk. The University Club is more alive and vibrant!" ("I am definitely more of a people person than the average engineer," he admits.)

Jackson wants members of the University Club to know they can and should use the Club for all it has to offer: "Don't be afraid to use the Club for more than just the restaurant," he says. "If I was a member I would be thrilled to attend all of the workshops, the classes and activities, to pop in to play pool with friends, all of it."

In his spare time, Jackson is into snowboarding and surfing. He even makes his own surfboards. Asked how he got into making boards, Jackson responds with his usual nonchalant shrug and nod of the head: "I saw a board in a shop but it was too expensive. So I thought 'I could make one just as good.'" He admits that that might have been a bit optimistic at first, but with time and practice, he has turned it into quite the hobby. "Right now I don't do it for money," he says. "My brother has one of my boards, and Alena [our Front of House Manager here at the Club] has one." Jackson's other 'hobby' are tattoos. The tattoo on his arm is a lion fish and he has a manta ray on his shoulder, among others. He keeps a notebook with tattoo ideas, noting that a good 75% or more don't make it out of the notebook.

In five to ten years from now Jackson hopes to be working at a law firm as a patent lawyer, and still enjoying the Goodland life.

Cooking with Chef David

"I love slow cooking – it really brings out the fun rustic family style of dining. This recipe is great because you can 'set it and forget it' in a slow cooker or instant pot while you enjoy some spring gardening, spring cleaning, or other spring projects or time with family. While this is traditionally a classic recipe to enjoy on St. Patrick’s Day, Easter day, and similar, it is also delicious, nutritious, and filling – not to mention convenient – any time." - UClub Executive Chef David

DINING REMINDERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Event Information When Signing Up

A reminder to please take note of event details when signing up. For all of our events, information is included about pricing, seating, start times, type of menu, and more. You can find event listings in this magazine on pages 16-23 and via the online calendar when you log in on our website. Each listing lets you know if an event is a seated affair or party/reception-style without fixed seating; and if the former, whether seating is at individual, private tables or larger communal tables for the evening; if the menu is buffet, à la cart, or prix fixe; seating times; and more.

Walk-Ins For Regular Lunch & Dinner Service

While we do strongly encourage reservations (help us better serve you and your guests by letting us know to expect you), walk-ins are also welcome for regular meals!

*RSVPs are, however, always needed for special meals and events. Be sure to check the online members’ calendar to ensure there is not a special meal on the date you want to come in. There are no walk-ins for special events and meals requiring reservations - see also next point below.

No Regular Dinner During Special ‘Gold’ Dinners

A reminder that there is no regular dinner available on UClub ‘Gold’ evenings - culinary evenings held in lieu of regular dinner. Walk-ins are also not possible on ‘Gold’ evenings (such as 1st Thursday wine dinner, Oktoberfest, Opera Dinner, Lobster Fest, Holiday Dinner, and similar). Reservations are always required ahead of time for special culinary evenings; food and seating are prepped ahead of time according to the reservation lists. We do have a 72-hour cancellation policy for these same reasons. You are welcome to stop by for a drink at the bar during special dinner events, but you will not be able to order dinner of any kind.

Communal Tables

The University Club is all about forging lasting connections, celebrating and growing together. To this end we often have communal tables set up for those who attended an event or activity and wish to dine together before or afterward. If you would like a lunch or dinner reservation before or after an event or activity and would like to sit at a communal table with others who attended, please indicate this in your reservation or let MemberServices@uclubsb.org know.

No Corkage Thursdays & Free Wine Fridays

You are always welcome to bring your own bottle(s) of wine when you dine at the UClub. Corkage fees are waived every Thursday at dinner. Enjoy a free glass of wine with your lunch every Friday.

A Dish Best Served...

We serve our meat - steaks, burgers, etc. - medium rare. If you would like yours prepared a different way, please let your server know. The same goes for any of our dishes - help us ensure you are satisfied by letting us know your preferences. Your servers are happy to answer any questions you may have.
