From Our Desks To You:

Dear Members,

First and foremost, let me just say once again how privileged I am to be a part of this incredible Club with all of you. Seeing so many of you, and your friends and families, here at our End of Summer Soirée was so wonderful! Be sure to take a look at the photos on pages 20-21, as well as online! This annual member favorite really showcases our Club’s essence: the camaraderie, fun, and community-spirit, our joie de vivre and wonderful diversity, the connections fostered, and memories made. I cherish these, and all the memories created together here at our Club, all year long.

The Summer Soirée is also such a poignant reminder to join in, to engage, and to participate. Sarah and her team create a full calendar of member events and activities, just waiting for us to partake. We are so fortunate!

In fact, our Club is more vibrant than ever, with a wonderful influx of new members, so many occasions to mix, mingle, network, socialize and meet like-minded people to share our passions and joys with. I especially love the addition of so many exciting exclusive discounts and opportunities for University Club members to attend the opera, theatre, and more together –who is going with the group to the Pagliacci opera in November, with the opening day cast party passes?! I know members very much enjoyed the recent private docent tours organized for Club members at Bellosguardo and Lotusland, and this quarter’s private docent tour of The Lady Leslie and Lord Paul Ridley-Tree Collection at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art looks enticing as well.

Which brings me to THE exciting announcement of this quarter: Our newly improved website and exclusive mobile members app are here! Sarah and her team always aim to make our member experiences here at our Club seamless and magical. To this end, they have been hard at work on our new website, and we are very proud to announce the launch also of our new mobile app for University Club members to make and manage reservations, stay up to date on member events and activities, and receive special member offers and notifications. The app is downloadable

in the Apple and Google Play app stores. Please see page 13 for more information and instructions. I for one am thrilled to be able to access all my Club needs anytime, anywhere, right from my phone!

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our newest members who have joined the University Club family these last few months. Our membership campaign is still ongoing as we continue to work toward selling out of Resident Memberships for the first time in our Club’s history. Take a look at page 2 for more information, and be sure to let your friends, families, and acquaintances know about this incredible opportunity. Our members make our Club what it is. We would love to have more people like you here.

On this note as well, don’t miss the fun and engaging member appreciation happy hours Sarah and her team throw for us, as well as all the other amazing ways to be involved and engaged. This is our Club, for us to utilize and make our own. Let’s engage, socialize, network, and celebrate and grow together.

I am also excited for the new fall menus coming out at the end of October. I can't wait to sample the new seasonal dishes in store for us, as well as enjoying my usual Club favorites. I love seeing the seasonal and local flavors included on every menu, and look forward to the fall cocktail specials as well. (Not to mention the fun drinks during the Club's Voodoo Lounge days at the end of October. Come get into the spirit of Halloween with some spooky specials!)

Finally, a reminder to be sure to join us for our Annual Meeting on October 25th – details on page 4 – as well as a reminder to RSVP for our annual holiday offerings, including Friendsgiving, the Holiday Social, and Holiday Dinner. Sign-ups are now open for all fall quarter events, and these are very popular.

I look forward to seeing you all here.

Dear Members,

As the vibrant energy of summer fades and we embrace the crisp air of fall, I’m thrilled to share exciting updates and events planned for the upcoming quarter. Your participation and engagement are at the heart of our Club, and this season we have plenty of opportunities for you to get involved and connect with fellow members.

Membership Drive: Welcoming New Faces

Our membership drive is in full swing, and we encourage you to invite friends, colleagues, and family to experience all that our Club has to offer. Building a thriving, dynamic membership community is vital, and who better to help grow that community than our current members. Don’t hesitate to reach out to Ammanjah in Member Service if you’d like more information on how to sponsor new members or to get involved.

Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Events

In addition to a full calendar of exclusive member activities, societies, and club, as well as very special guest speakers this quarter from the Netherlands and Japan, our fall quarter is also a time for a number of favorite Club traditions, including:

Annual Meeting (October 25, 5:00-6:00 PM): Join us for our annual meeting, where we will review the past year and look ahead to exciting future plans. A complimentary reception will follow, providing a great opportunity to meet and connect with fellow members.

Voodoo Lounge (October 30-31): Get ready for a spooky transformation as our bar becomes the “Voodoo Lounge” for two nights of fun, mystery, and great cocktails.

Friendsgiving: A Club favorite, Friendsgiving offers the perfect setting to enjoy good food and even better company while building new friendships with fellow members.

Holiday Social with Santa and Mrs. Claus: Bring your family for a magical evening of holiday cheer. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand for photos and to delight the little ones!

Four-Course Holiday Dinner: In the spirit of the season, we will be offering an elegant four-course dinner just before Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas. Celebrate with a festive meal in the company of your fellow members.

New Year’s Eve Gala: Ring in the new year in style at our New Year’s Eve Gala, featuring the return of “The Academy,” the band from our Summer Soirée. It’s the perfect way to close out the

year with dancing, delicious food, and fantastic entertainment. I look forward to seeing you at the Club throughout this season of celebration and connection. Let’s make this fall one to remember!

Spotlight On Our Partners

University Club of Santa Barbara members enjoy the luxury and amenities of a private club wherever their travels take them. Reciprocal privileges extend to such clubs as the Oxford and Cambridge Club in London, the University Club of Chicago, the Olympic Club in San Francisco, and a host of private, university, athletic, country, and yacht clubs across the nation and worldwide. Many offer overnight accommodations on par with the finest of hotels, exquisite dining, athletic facilities, and other amenities.

University Club member Maggie Moss-Tucker recently visited one of our newer reciprocal partners - the beautiful and historic The Down Town Association in New York City. The 5th oldest of all existing New York clubs, the "DTA" today is an island of quiet civility in a bustling Lower Manhattan, and a locus for nourishment, entertainment, relaxation or quiet discourse.

"When you are in New York, I encourage you to visit The Down Town Association, where my husband and I were members for many years. Affectionately known as the DTA, the club is located at 60 Pine Street, one block north of Wall Street in Lower Manhattan. It was founded as a gathering place for businessmen in 1859 and is the oldest private club in New York that still occupies its historic building, designed by the prominent 19th-century architect Charles C. Haight. The club began admitting women in the 1990s and remains a hub for influential figures in finance, law, and politics.

The grand entry hall is distinguished by its original marble floors, an immense cloakroom with brass-lined umbrella stands, and a bank of old-fashioned phone booths that make you feel you have stepped back in time.

The Main Bar with its soaring ceiling and wood paneling is on the first floor. A true Edwardian setting, it has been featured in many films, such as The Post with Meryl Streep and A Bridge Too Far featuring Tom Hanks, as well as numerous television shows – particularly episodes of Law and Order.

Upstairs is the Reading Room, one of the grandest in New York. Complimentary coffee, tea, and water are available there all day. With its wood-paneled walls, plush seating, and large windows that flood the room with light, it’s the perfect place to work remotely or retreat from the bustling city outside.

The Main Dining Room is located on the third floor, accessible by a quaint elevator or the grand staircase that ascends through the heart of the building and that is lined with an impressive collection of 19th-century lithographs of New York. The room is decorated with historic Zuber et Cie woodblock wallpaper of serene American colonial scenes. The large brick fireplace on the side wall completes the unique flair of this grand space.

The top floor features a Teddy Roosevelt-style game room lined with eye-catching taxidermy, including a lifesize bear, a moose head, and a buffalo. The room boasts pool and billiard tables, backgammon setups, poker and cards tables, dart boards, chess, dominoes and more."

A few important things to know before you go: The DTA opens at 9:00 am Tuesday-Friday. The Club must receive your Letter of Introduction before you arrive. Like most NYC clubs, there is a dress code. The DTA maintains a “standard of business casual attire”. Gentlemen are required to wear collared shirts, and all members are kindly asked to avoid gym shoes. No shorts are permitted in the clubhouse and no cellphones are allowed in the public rooms. The bar and dining room open at 5:00 pm and dinner is usually served until 9:00 pm.

Address: 60 Pine Street New York, NY Website: www.thedta.com Tel.: 212.422.1982

Want to know how to access this and other reciprocal clubs across the nation and worldwide? • Take a look at the box on page 18 for instructions. • You can find the full list of our reciprocal partners online on our website - www.uclubsb.org

While You're There:

"The DTA’s location provides the perfect starting point for exploring Lower Manhattan. Once known primarily as a business center dominated by finance, the area has evolved into a lively, mixed-use neighborhood with a dynamic blend of historic charm and modern vibrance.

Just down Pine Street to the west is the historic Trinity Church designed by Richard Upjohn in 1846. It is the first Gothic Revival building in New York with a cemetery that includes such notables as Alexander Hamilton, Robert Fulton, and Francis Lewis. Two blocks away is Federal Hall where George Washington was inaugurated as our first president. Stroll down the cobblestone streets that surround the South Street Seaport and Seaport Museum where the city celebrates its marine heritage. The district features some of the oldest buildings on the island and the largest concentration of restored early 19th-century commercial structures, including original mercantile buildings, the former Fulton Fish Market and Chef Jean-Georges new culinary oasis in The Tin Building! Check out Jean Dubuffet's Forest of Trees commissioned specifically for Chase Manhattan Plaza by the former president of Chase Manhattan Bank and noted art collector David Rockefeller.

If you are thirsty, you can stop by Fraunces Tavern at 54 Pearl St. which dates back to 1719. It was named for Samuel Fraunces, who owned and operated the place as the Queen’s Head Tavern during the 18th century and who was later President Washington’s chief steward.

No trip to Lower Manhattan is complete without seeing the Charging Bull, the bronze sculpture that stands on Broadway just north of Bowling Green in the Financial District. The bull is the symbol of financial optimism and prosperity, which of course are Wall Street’s ideals. If time permits, don’t miss the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Indian. And make a point to see the Netherlands Monument that commemorates the establishment of New Amsterdam by the Dutch. Designed by H.A. van den Eijnde, a sculptor from the Netherlands, the monument was dedicated in 1926 to mark the tercentenary of the Dutch settlement and the purchase of the island of Manhattan from the Lenape people. Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are also a boat ride away. If you like to walk, you can always head North to the Lower East Side, Chinatown, and Little Italy!" DINING REMINDERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Event Information When Signing Up

A reminder to please take note of event details when signing up. For all of our events, information is included about pricing, seating, start times, type of menu, and more. You can find event listings in this magazine on pages 27-35 and via the online calendar on our website and via the member app. Each listing lets you know if an event is a seated affair or party/receptionstyle without fixed seating; and if the former, whether seating is at individual, private tables or larger communal tables for the evening; if the menu is buffet, à la carte, or prix fixe; seating times; and more.

Walk-Ins For Regular Lunch & Dinner Service

While we do strongly encourage reservations (help us better serve you and your guests by letting us know to expect you), walk-ins are also welcome for regular meals!

*RSVPs are, however, always needed for special meals and events. Be sure to check the online members’ calendar to ensure there is not a special meal on the date you want to come in. There are no walk-ins for special events and meals requiring reservations - see also next point below.

No Regular Dinner During Special Culinary Events

A reminder that there is no regular dinner available during culinary evenings held in lieu of regular dinner. Walk-ins are also not possible on ‘Gold’ evenings (such as Wine Maker Dinners, Oktoberfest, St. Patrick's Dinner, Lobster Fest, Holiday Dinner,

and similar). Reservations are always required ahead of time for special culinary evenings; food and seating are prepped ahead of time according to the reservation lists. We do have a 72-hour cancellation policy for these same reasons. You are welcome to stop by for a drink at the bar during special dinner events, but you will not be able to order dinner of any kind.

Communal Tables

The University Club is all about forging lasting connections, celebrating, and growing together. To this end we often have communal tables set up for those who attended an event or activity and wish to dine together before or afterward. If you would like a lunch or dinner reservation before or after an event or activity and would like to sit at a communal table with others who attended, please indicate this in your reservation or let member.services@uclubsb.org know.

No Corkage Thursdays & Free Wine Fridays

You are always welcome to bring your own bottle(s) of wine when you dine at the University Club. Corkage fees are waived every Thursday at dinner for up to two 750ml bottles per visit. Enjoy a free glass of wine with your lunch every Friday.

A Dish Best Served...

We serve steaks, burgers, and salmon medium rare. If you would like yours prepared a different way, please let your server know. The same goes for any of our dishes - help us ensure you are satisfied by letting us know your preferences. Your servers are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Comforting & Cozy Fall Food for

added

warmth on crisp fall days

As the weather gets a bit cooler and a crispness fills the air, we naturally switch from light summer cooking to the slower, more savory pots and pans on the stove of autumn. With pumpkins already lining store shelves and the many different squashes and other fall favorites readily available, we like to revisit some of the fall classics, like this delicious butternut squash soup. We hope you enjoy this flavorful and nutritious dish.

Butternut Squash Soup

INGREDIENTS:

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 large yellow onion, chopped

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1 (3-pound) butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cubed

3 garlic cloves, chopped

1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage

1/2 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary

1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

3 to 4 cups vegetable broth

Freshly ground black pepperer

DIRECTIONS:

1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, salt, and several grinds of fresh pepper and sauté until soft, 5 to 8 minutes. Add the squash and cook until it begins to soften, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes.

2. Add the garlic, sage, rosemary, and ginger. Stir and cook 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant, then add 3 cups of the broth. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook until the squash is tender, 20 to 30 minutes.

3. Let cool slightly and pour the soup into a blender, working in batches if necessary, and blend until smooth. If your soup is too thick, add up to 1 cup more broth and blend. Season to taste.
