We are excited to introduce our new President & CEO, Lindsay Myers! Former Executive Vice President of Turtle Bay Exploration Park and General Manager of the Sheraton Redding Hotel, Lindsay is passionate and enthusiastic about the future of Turtle Bay and the limitless impact that the Park can have on the community of Redding and Northern California visitors.
With over 20 years of experience in Hospitality and Hotel Management and involvement in Redding Rotary, Redding Tourism Marketing Group, the Advisory Committee for Visit Redding, and the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce, Lindsay has a deep connection with the area and the individuals who make Redding so special. As President & CEO, Lindsay not only aspires to preserve the rich history of Turtle Bay, but she also wishes to create new opportunities in Redding’s gathering place for the community to enjoy. Lindsay says, “I love what we already have to offer, and I’m excited to be a part of that history, but also excited to continue to grow and make it more memorable for generations to come.”
It was a huge success and we give thanks to the whole community for the item donations, Patron Table sponsorships, Silent and Live Auction bids, and raffle ticket purchases! All together you helped to raise the money necessary to help fund the animals, exhibitions, and education programs at Turtle Bay!
Special thanks to our Fund-A-Need Donors who came together to help us fund a new classroom project in the McConnell Arboretum and Gardens!

Our exhibitions have gone to the dogs…and cats…and turtles!
We are a nation of pet owners. There are over 420 million pets registered in North America alone. Can you guess how many are dogs and how many are cats? I’ll give you a hint. The cats win this round. Humans have been living alongside pets for millennia, and we have developed deep relationships with our animal friends. Ethology, the science of animal behavior, has come leaps and bounds in the past few years, overturning many of our preconceived ideas about these creatures that share our homes and our lives. Are you ready to learn more about Fluffy and Fido? Immerse yourself in Cats & Dogs: The Exhibition, an interactive journey into the scientific, sociological, and cultural knowledge of these animals.
This exhibition, designed and produced by Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris, France, uses an interactive and sensory matrix of games and simulations that put you in the animal’s “shoes.” Through hundreds of thousands of years of human influence, there are now 72 different breeds of cats and 343 breeds of dogs. What is it like to jump as well as a Siamese or run as fast as a greyhound? What on earth is your furry housemate thinking when they break the rules? Heck, why do we even have pets? Come down to Turtle Bay and find out!
Also on exhibit in the Museum is Betty LaDuke’s breathtaking Turtle Wisdom featuring 20 carved and painted works exploring love, resilience, and togetherness, on display May 13 - Sept 4.
In March, Turtle Bay lost a dear friend and a generous supporter, Sherrill Bambauer. Sherrill was a vibrant example of how philanthropy can positively impact a community. As a founding member of Turtle Bay, Sherrill (with her late-husband Dennis) was key to making the Park a reality! She was a special person and Turtle Bay was so very lucky to have her in our corner championing the Park, its programs, and the community that it was created to support. She will be sorely missed and forever a Turtle!

It’s Showtime!
Presented by Senator K. Maurice & Marianne Johannessen Foundation
It’s almost summertime, which means our Walk on the Wild Side Animal Show is just around the corner! Our Animal Trainers have been working hard to create a fun-filled educational show for visitors.
There are many components when creating the show. There is the writing of the script to be exciting, educational, and timed to match the animals’ behaviors. Choosing the music to set the tone for each animal takes months of listening to hundreds of songs. Learning our scripts so that we are fun, and engaging is essential in letting our passion pour through. And then, there is the training of the animals to perform their behaviors. After countless weeks of practice, we are excited to get on stage in the Forest Amphitheater to showcase our animal ambassadors. Visit Turtle Bay to see our animals in action, Tuesday - Sunday beginning May 13. With great new animals this season, this is a show you won’t forget.
Saturday, July 8 • 8am - 10am
Walk for Wildlife is an active, family-friendly fundraiser to help support our Animal Ambassadors at Turtle Bay! Explore our beautiful campus gardens and meet our Animal Ambassadors up close along the route.
Enjoy a complimentary pancake breakfast courtesy of the Shasta Dam Kiwanis Club with your ticket after the walk! Animal Ambassador Plushies will be available for purchase in Paul Bunyan’s Forest Camp and a commemorative race bib included with the ticket.
This event has limited space and is by reservation only. For more information visit turtlebay.org/walk
Turtle Bay’s Education department offers engaging and educational programming opportunities on three Saturdays every month? Family Second Saturday
Family Second Saturday on the second Saturday of every month, is an all-ages (this includes adults!) educational program about anything and everything; sometimes science, sometimes art, sometimes culture!
Redding Electric Utility presents Science Saturday
Every third Saturday of the month, join our educators and volunteers for an interactive, interdisciplinary learning experience at Science Saturday!
Art Studio Saturday

Hugelkultur garden beds turn garden debris into very successful planting beds. The term “hugelkultur” joins two German words: “hugel”, meaning “hill” and “kultur” meaning, well, “culture”, so English translation: “hill culture”. The term was coined by German horticulturalists Hans Beba and Herman Andra in the 1970s. The most common version consists of creating raised garden beds by covering large to medium-sized pieces of wood with lasagna-like layers of dried leaves, green material (like green leaves, grass clippings, etc.), and soil, and then planting into them. Mulching is an important final step to keep weeds at bay.
After the first establishing year of your hugelkultur bed, little additional water is needed. The rotting of the logs releases moisture, also mildly heating up the bed, letting plants get grow earlier in the spring. The hugelkultur bed grows a variety of plants with varying water needs in one spot, because of the combination of perfect drainage and an ideal level of moisture retention in the soil. Also, no fertilizer is needed. It is important to keep adding soil or compost, at least annually, to the top of your hugelkultur bed as it begins to decompose, so roots are not exposed. And again, apply mulch, and more mulch as needed, to keep weeds down.
