The new tradition continues...

It’s that time of year again, and Redding Garden of Lights is back for its 4th annual season of holiday cheer, fun, and excitement presented by Mercy Medical Center Redding. Our dedicated staff and volunteers have been hard at work preparing the Gardens for this spectacular family experience, which draws the attention of regional and national rankings as one of the best holiday light shows in the country.

Originally birthed out of the 2019 Redding City Identity Project, Redding Garden of Lights has consistently aimed to fulfill the vision of enhancing Redding’s reputation. The world-class light exhibits and winding paths throughout the Gardens reflect Turtle Bay’s vision of being a vibrant gathering

New to the 2023 light show is Model Train Town, featuring holiday-themed train models traveling through Shasta County landmarks and landscapes with dazzling lights and sounds, presented by Moore & Bogener. We’ve also added neon glowing swings, improved paths and signage, more photo ops, new music and animations, and VIP Igloos, a unique private party experience complete with food, drinks, and souvenirs for group rentals for up to eight people.

New Year’s Eve at Garden of Lights

Ring in the new year with friends and family at Redding Garden of Lights on Sunday, December 31, 6pm - 10pm. This special ticketed event is all-ages and will feature the glorious sights and sounds of the light show, plus live music performances, unique food and beverage offerings from Mosaic, and an East Coast ball drop New Year’s Eve countdown, so you won’t have to sacrifice bedtime. All proceeds support Turtle Bay’s yearround educational programming, animal care, exhibitions, and more.

This hands-on science exhibition is about the nature and wonder of snow and the impact of climate change on our snowy planet. The highly interactive and immersive exhibition follows snow’s journey from tiny crystals to vast winter landscapes to abundant spring snowmelt. Guests explore how snow shapes and sustains life on Earth, snow’s vital role in sustaining our water supply and cooling our planet, and the cultural and personal value of snow. Snow: Tiny Crystals, Global Impact was developed and produced

by OMSI as part of a collaborative project led by the University of Alaska Fairbanks and funded by the National Science Foundation.

AI: Your Mind & The Machine Now - Jan 7, 2024 Presented by

What’s up with ChatGPT? Want to know how your smart thermostat has learned your daily routine?

This timely exhibition from The Relayer Group takes a deep dive into Artificial Intelligence and demonstrates how AI is relevant to our lives right now. Discover how AI programs work and explore how they learn and behave through hands-on interactives, games, illusions, and videos.

This exhibition is the perfect STEAM experience to introduce people of all ages to this growing technology and to peek into how our brains and AI will work together in the future.

Camp is coming!

Fall and winter approaching means that students will be going on breaks for the upcoming holidays. For those parents who are looking for ways to keep their children’s minds engaged along with helping them make new friendships and have fun, our day camps during the school breaks are perfect! During each week of camp there are different themes of educator-led activities and visits to all of the amazing areas around the Turtle Bay campus. This fall and winter we’ve chosen three weeks of themes to keep kids inspired: AI Explorers for November 20-22, Icy Investigators for December 26-29, and Brushes and Beyond for January 2-5.

When we start to develop what themes and activities our camps will have, we take a look at what’s sparked interest in the past, what’s relevant at Turtle Bay during that time, and what’s relevant in the wider world.

With our two current special exhibitions, AI: Our Mind and the Machine and Snow: Tiny Crystals, Global Impact, we decided to go with a theme that focused on coding, robotics, and brain games along with a theme exploring the science behind things that are cold and the things that live in the cold. We also always like to include an art-themed camp week because of the amount of creativity we see inspired in the campers.

What does it take to stay safe from predators? How do predators find food? It’s either eat or be eaten in the wild. Come see this 30-minute animal show to learn survival techniques that animals use to hunt or forage for food, and their many other adaptations. This adventure will have you face to face with some of our favorite animals as they fly, crawl, or walk on by. A fun time for all ages that you will not soon forget.

Planting and Dividing Why plant in the fall-winter?

In our relatively mild winter climate, fall-winter planting is usually preferable for a multitude of perennials, shrubs, and trees. Our Nursery carries a wide selection of plants suitable for fall-winter planting.

In our area, planting in fall-winter with cool to moderately cold weather (above-freezing temperatures) causes less transplant shock than conditions with high temperatures and no rain, as in the late spring-summer. Also, the rainy weather season means little to no supplemental irrigation concerns for newly planted plants. Root systems will grow through the winter and speed establishment. If you want annual wildflowers, the best time to plant most wildflower seeds is after the first rain.

Have a personal encounter with Animal Ambassadors Timber, the Beaver or Gucci the Opossum with this once in a lifetime experience.

Planting Plants, whether from a nursery container or transplanted, should be planted with the crown (the base of the plant) at the same soil level (or slightly higher for natives and other drought-tolerant plants) that it is growing in the pot or soil. Your planting hole should only be as deep as the plant’s current soil level, and twice as wide.

Division Dividing established clump-forming perennials in your garden is usually simple. However, many plants, such as daylilies, ornamental grasses, etc., have significant root systems which may require some force to divide.
