Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018

Open Now - April 30

Support provided by The Robert Harris Family

Additional support provided by Dr. Bruce Farrell, DDS

turtlebay.org/marine-corps

Most people are unaware that there is a Marine Corps Combat Art Program that relies on talented Marines and civilians to document the ongoing mission of the Marine Corps. The guidance they set is simple, “Go to war and do art.” We are pleased to bring Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018, to Turtle Bay. This exhibition features 36 artworks that speak to the experiences of these artists, most of whom are deployed around the globe. “Marine Corps art is up close and personal. It is about the individual Marine—in combat, during training, or while delivering assistance during times of great need,” said Lin Ezell, Curator Emeritus of the Marine Corps Combat Art Program. “This art helps us better appreciate those who wear the uniform of todayʼs military service members.”

Our version of the exhibition has a special addition. Lin Ezell encouraged our Collections and Exhibits department to find Marine Corps artifacts in Turtle Bayʼs Permanent Collection to add to the gallery. Though it meant stepping back in time to well before 1975, this allowed us to tell the story of Jane Deeble Korn, a Marine Corps Womenʼs Reservist during World War II who moved to Redding with her Navy veteran husband Bob after the war. The Korns were deeply involved in the community, and Jane served on the City of Reddingʼs Civic Arts Commission that created the Redding Museum and Art Center in the early 1960s. This is one of the founding organizations that merged to become Turtle Bay Exploration Park in 1997. Janeʼs uniforms, which she donated to the museum in 1974, give us a glimpse into the life of a Woman Marine nearly eight decades ago.

This exhibition tells the visual story of the United States Marine Corps as seen through the eyes of the artists. It has, as its foundation, artworks created by Marine combat artists who documented their own experiences in times of war and peace. Marine Corps Art will be on display in the Turtle Bay Museumʼs East Exploration Hall now through April 30.

7th West Coast Biennial Art Competition & Exhibition

Open Now - April 30

turtlebay.org/biennial

Lucky number seven! It is hard to believe that this brainchild of Mary Harper, our former Education Manager, and her husband John, Redding Museumʼs former art curator and long-time Shasta College art instructor, has been a Turtle Bay tradition since 2011. The pair came up with the idea to create a larger version of the Redding Museum of Art and Historyʼs annual art competition and exhibition, which had been discontinued after the move to the new museum in 2002.

All artists working in California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska are invited to submit artwork that has been created in the previous three years and has not been previously exhibited at Turtle Bay or the Mosaic Gallery. A new juror not associated with Turtle Bay is chosen to jury each competition. Our jurors have ranged from curators to art critics; many of them are artists themselves. Along with generous cash prizes for the winners, this fresh perspective for each competition attracts new artists who have not previously submitted and creates a unique exhibition for each exhibition.

For the first four competitions, Jan DeHate, our former Education Coordinator, wrangled all of the art submissions and matched them to payments, and prepared them for the juror. In 2019, we switched over to Entrythingy, which has streamlined the process for the artists and our staff. In 2021, we even managed to host the competition and exhibition virtually with a live exhibition gallery, reception, and jurorʼs lecture via Zoom. This was a memorable experience that speaks to the resilience of artists and museums alike.

Traditionally, the West Coast Biennial opens on the last Friday of January during the City-wide Cultural Cruise, which dates back to the 1980s and is organized by the Shasta County Arts Council. This might be the last year these two coincide, as the Cultural Cruise will be moving to April in 2024 to tie in with California Arts & Creativity Month. However, as Turtle Bayʼs exhibition schedule is set years in advance, we will still open the Biennial at the end of January. When you visit the Turtle Bay Museum to admire the variety of artwork, donʼt forget to

Tree Houses

Open February 11 - May 14

Supported by Red River Forest LLC

turtlebay.org/tree-houses

Immerse yourself in an indoor treehouse! Look for tracking clues and natural artifacts. Learn how to become a responsible forester through sustainable logging. Find out how trees sustain life on Earth! You can experience all this and more with our upcoming Tree Houses exhibition! This is an excellent exhibition for Turtle Bay Exploration Park because it fits perfectly with our mission and the amenities already offered, including Paul Bunyanʼs Forest Camp and Wildlife Woods. These fun and educational areas show the importance of our forests as resources and habitats for animals and for us!

Trees provide habitats for many different animals and are used to make a variety of products in our lives. In the exhibition, you will have the chance to become an animal tracker by hunting for signs left by raccoons, woodpeckers, bears, and other tree dwellers. You can also create a new dance by waving your arms and moving your body on the “Forest Sound Dance Floor,” producing a symphony of sounds such as bear grunts, woodpecker taps, turkey gobbles, and more! Learn how different parts of your house are made from trees and what types of kitchen staples might have come from trees. You can even practice sustainable logging and build your own tree house.

After exploring Tree Houses, head out to Paul Bunyanʼs Forest Camp, an educational hub modeled after an old-time forest camp similar to the ones all over Shasta County hundreds of years ago. Explore the Forest Adventure Playground, a forest-themed playground for older children and adults featuring a large tower and climbing wall for a birdʼs eye view of the Park. Take the little ones to Babeʼs Corral Playground, a forest-themed playground attraction for our youngest guests that includes a balance log, ADA-accessible nest swing, log tunnel, Osprey nest with a slide, and more. Finally, visit the animals inside the Mill Building and in Wildlife Woods!

Preparing for the Walk on the Wild Side Animal Show

The fox is running free: no harness, no leash as she darts across the stage and with a bounding leap she is up on the backdrop, balancing as she runs across like an acrobat. The raven opens a box with a push of a lever, grabs a tool, and carries it across the stage. Thousands of people enjoy our Walk on the Wild Side animal show each summer. We are often asked how we get the animals to do these behaviors. Why donʼt they run off?

Itʼs called Choice and Control Positive Reinforcement Training. Using some of the most modern forms of training, Animal Care Trainers are able to showcase a full array of natural behaviors of the animals. In this form of training, the animals have a choice every day and in every instance, whether they want to participate or not in the trainings, and on show day. Our job is to make it worth it for them, so they choose it. It is a process that takes time, consistency, clear communication, patience, and a lot of relationship-building. During this process, we slowly add each of the variables that may distract them during the show. We start with the trainers and an empty, quiet theater. Then, we add a few people. Then the music and eventually lots of strangers. That is where our guests come into the picture to help with the training.

We take ten weeks between the end of our winter programming and the start of rehearsal week to proceed through this training process. In April, we open it up for our guests in our Open Training Sessions. We open the theater for any guests to come and observe us train and watch the progress of the animals. Itʼs a time to get a glimpse into how it all comes together! Come stop in for a few minutes or the entire hour. Watch one step with an animal or many repetitions. The choice is yours!

Famous Artists Childrenʼs Art Exhibition: Contemporary Color and Shapes

turtlebay.org/famous-artist-portfolio

Open Now - April 30

See the creative artwork of local child art learners at the Famous Artists Childrenʼs Art Show! Every year Turtle Bay exhibits the works of students reached by Turtle Bay's Famous Artists Portfolio Program. There is a variety of artwork from K-8 students at schools throughout our community!

Turtle Bayʼs Famous Artists Portfolio Program is an art resource that community members and educators can use to teach learners about important art, art history, the lives of famous artists, and more! This free program allows parents, teachers, and/or community members to present reproductions of significant artworks to students in the classroom. Portfolio prints are organized into nearly 70 age-appropriate themes. Follow-up art activities are suggested for each portfolio.

If you are interested in using this resource for your learners, no artistic experience is necessary; an enjoyment of working with children and a belief that art matters is what is important.

General Public Sale

Saturday, April 8 • 9am-3pm

Spring is here! Enjoy discounted plants and stock up for your home garden. The sale includes a 30% discount for Turtle Bay Members and a 20% discount for the public. Come early, as some plants sell quickly!

Traditionally heirloom tomatoes and other vegetables are a main feature of the spring plant sale! In addition, we have unusual, drought-tolerant, hard-to-find perennials, shrubs, and trees, as well as California native plants and ornamental grasses. All of the plants you see at our Spring Plant Sale are all grown here in the Turtle Bay Nursery and acclimated to Reddingʼs vigorous climatic conditions.

Purchasing plants from a botanical gardenʼs nursery is an opportunity to grow plants that you see as mature specimens growing throughout established gardens. In our case, it is also an opportunity to grow a wide selection of drought-tolerant plants, including native species in our California native sections (sun and shade).

Even with some substantial rain recently, our climate has very little to no rain in summer. Drought-tolerant plants that need minimal summer irrigation are always a good choice for our area. They are also typically lower maintenance, which is an added bonus!

Agave americana ‘Variegataʼ Variegated Century PlantSouthwest US, Mexican native. All Agaves are “architectural” plants, perfect for single-specimen garden highlights!

Amorpha californica California

False Indigo an exotic-looking, but very hardy large native shrub with beautiful burgundy-purple blooms and bright orange stamens.
