I am sad to share the news that our Food & Beverage Director, Keith Culley, is leaving us as he pursues an opportunity at a civil engineering firm in Sacramento. Keith’s degree is actually in engineering so it seemed fitting if he were to leave the golf industry, it would be for a position in engineering. Keith has been with El Macero Country Club for over 4 years and has done a tremendous job improving the overall food and beverage experience and also building a better team. We have become great friends over the years and although I am very happy for him for this opportunity, I will miss him dearly. His last day with us will be Saturday, April 30. Please help me in thanking him for his hard work over the last four years and wish him the best in his next venture. We hosted the Celebration of Life for Joan Partain last Saturday which, although sad, it was so nice seeing so

many fellow members, friends, and family get together to truly celebrate her wonderful life. We had over 150 attendees and it was just nice to be able to host events of this size again after COVID’s impact with gatherings. Unfortunately in the last couple of weeks we have lost two other long term members with us. Ron North, a member for over 50 years, who turned 90 years in 2021, passed recently. I sure wish our records went back that far to see how many rounds of golf Ron played here at El Macero because it was a lot! Positive thoughts to his wife, Marjorie, and their entire family as they mourn the loss of a great man. In addition, Maurice Silva (92 years old), a member of the club for over 30 years unfortunately passed away last week. I have gotten to know his wife, Mary, and their family over the years and they are such a friendly group of people. Maurice will be missed.

GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE Continued...

Pool season is nearly upon us and it has felt like the middle of the summer on certain warm days with the amount of members utilizing the pool. A few things as it relates to the pool this year: 1. The official pool season kicks off on Memorial Day and ends near Labor Day. We strive to have lifeguards on duty each afternoon/evening during this time. If we are able to find lifeguards that can work prior to their schools getting done for the summer, you may see lifeguards in action in early May. You will see a weekend pool attendant to help sign in members/guests along with helping keep the pool and deck clean and tidy this weekend moving forward. 2. As a reminder, you are welcome to bring guests to the pool and you can simply sign them in at the entrance to the pool area. Adult guests are $5 per person and children 17 and under are $3. 3. In an effort to get ahead of some challenges we have had in the past with dress code in the pool, you can view the official pool Dress Code below. Please share this with your entire family and guests you may have joining you. 4. Please remember that children ages 13 and younger are not allowed in the locker rooms without a parent or guardian present. Dress Code

I want to thank all 20 members and almost the entire UC Davis Men & Women Golf teams for coming out on March 28 for our EMCC Club Improvement Day! It was the largest turnout we have ever had for a volunteer day of work! We were able to fill divots with sand on nearly 12 holes along with cleaning up a lot of suckers from the trees and weeds in the tree wells. Next work day I promise to get a picture of everyone that comes out to recognize them properly. The next day will be on May 2 from 9:30-11:30am. More details will be sent out in the coming weeks. Enjoy your weekend!

AGRONOMY Ryan Macnair | Superintendent Well, we couldn’t have asked for a better time to get some much-needed rainfall. The course has received roughly 1¾ inches of rain from the last few storms and you can see the positive response course-wide. The fairways needed a good flush of “mother’s milk” and the greens benefited as well, especially post aerification.

Aerification went smoothly last month, and we are on track to be fully recovered within the next week or two. One thing to mention during aerification periods, are the increased number of unrepaired ball marks.

When

the

greens

have

been

punched, it leaves them softer than usual and ball marks tend to increase in size and depth. It is crucial that these be repaired, even more so during these times, so that the greens can recover from aerification well. A good reminder to players in your group is, “if you can’t find your ball mark, then fix another and three

more.”

Everyone’s

assistance

in

course care goes a long way to ensuring the best conditions for every group on the course whether you’re the first or last group.

This week you may have noticed some work going on at the pumphouse on Hole 8. We started the installation of our new pumpstation skid, panels, and plumbing on Tuesday April 5th. The old equipment was severely aged, and replacement was critical to ensuring success of our irrigation system.

VOLUME NO. 61 ISSUE NO. 4 | APRIL 2022

AGRONOMY Continued... Tree pruning and removals will continue this month and in May. The importance of removing dead, dying, and diseased trees is vital to extend the lives of healthy trees on our property. Once removed, healthy trees in the vicinity can uptake more nutrients that were getting shared by the trees in decline. Finally, the stumps will be ground, chips removed, and holes filled with sand to allow turf to fill in. It is very evident that bunker conditions and rake availability can be improved course wide. We have ordered 50 new bunker rakes to add to the course once we take delivery. The maintenance team started

checking

sand

depths

in

our

green-side bunkers and we are finding that some bunkers could use extra sand to

help

provide

coverage

over

the

exposed liner, where others require us to move sand rather than add. We are strategizing and planning for a bunker renovation next year, but in order to provide something in the interim, our crew will begin “freshening” up high-traffic bunkers that require extra sand. This will be a slow process as we do need to assess each bunker before piling in sand to ensure we have proper and consistent depths throughout. You might also notice that the smooth portions of the bunkers have increased in size further down the faces to help avoid pulling up more liner. This bunker raking style is one of the most popular styles because it requires less maintenance, and the firmer faces allow balls to fall to the floors of the bunkers resulting in better lies.

VOLUME NO. 61 ISSUE NO. 4 | APRIL 2022

AGRONOMY Continued... The 3-flag color rotation we currently use to determine front, middle, and back pin locations will transition to a single-color flag course wide starting Tuesday, April 12th through the remainder of April. We will be trialing this method and request feedback from our membership for this period,

whether

Besides and

single flag gives, transitioning to this system allows us to determine the best location for a pin dependent on daily conditions like green speeds, traffic, etc. For example, when green speeds are fast, we can ensure pin locations are fair, but with limited hole locations, (like front of Hole 3) it makes it very difficult to choose a spot. This gives us an opportunity to expand the variety of pinnable areas and acts as a source of traffic control by avoiding areas on greens that could be struggling from excessive wear or traffic, resulting in healthier greens. Again, we request your feedback at the Pro Shop so we may develop an average consensus of this transition. Hopefully all of you have enjoyed the warm weather like our bermudagrass has because fairways will be open for cart traffic beginning April 12th. Play well and I look forward to seeing you on the course!

FOOD AND BEVERAGE Keith Culley | Food and Beverage Director

It is astounding how fast four years can come and go. We grind, pivot, push ourselves, and our peers to reach a goal. Once we get there, it’s time to set another goal and we start all over again. Constantly improving. Constantly learning. Sometimes we forget the importance of remembering where we started and that it’s all about the long game. Crazy things have happened this month with persons who are constantly in the spotlight. The Grammys incident, Phil is not playing in the Masters for the first time in three decades, and Tiger is playing after his accident. Whether the events that led to these speed bumps were by their own design or an unfortunate accident, there’s hope that they have taken a step back, changed direction and started moving forward again like Tiger has so many times in his career. For those that are watching, just look how many people are choosing to follow the man play this year. We all pivoted during COVID, and for me, there has been a lot of change that has forced me to reconsider my career path after an opportunity presented itself. I’m lucky to have had such a great team to work with and members who had the same goals we did; to make El Macero a place to be proud of. Members, thank you allowing me the freedom to be creative and trust that change in operation is at least worth a shot even if it doesn’t work out. You are in incredible hands with Rusty at the helm and current F&B leadership in place. Rusty, thank you for allowing me to move the department in a direction with little resistance and all the support. It has been a pleasure making small deposits for these four years. Now for the stuff that is more fun… We had our first group interview for seasonal positions this week. All applicants were promising. There are two more scheduled for May that are listed below. If you have someone who is interested in a summer role, please email Rusty, and let him know there is interest in attending one of the interviews. * Wednesday, May 11th at 5:30pm * Sunday, May 15th at 12:00pm Kid’s Summer camps will be allowing 60 children to sign-up this year. We are in week two of signups and they are filling up fast! All reservations are handled on the website. If you have issues logging in, please reach out to Rachel in the office. Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, and Memorial Day are just around the corner. More information will be coming soon. Be on the lookout for flyers and texts. I wish you all a wonderful summer and hope to see you around town! It’s been an honor to be a part of the incredible El Macero History.

MEMBERSHIP HAPPENINGS Karyn Yarris | Membership and Marketing Director

Hello! I hope everyone is having an amazing Spring. I am thrilled to say that our success in the membership department continues as we are now just FIVE (5) Social memberships away from sold out! I anticipate that if the activity trend continues we may have a wait list across all membership categories including Social. Now is the time if you have family and/or friends considering Social membership. As a reminder, even though we are sold out in ALL golf categories we are still accepting wait list applications for our golf categories. If you have friends and/or family interested in golf membership it is best for them to jump on the wait list sooner as that will only speed up the timeline to join. We are gearing up for an incredible Summer filled all kinds of fun and entertainment and to that end I am excited to announce that this year’s Member Appreciation Week will be July 12-17th with 6 full days of events and promotions celebrating YOU!!! From Yoga with Blake to Casual Wine tasting to a delicious all you can eat Pancake Breakfast there will be something for everyone and as we get closer we will roll out detailed information on each day’s events! Now I would like to introduce one of our new member families to the club!

John Williamson and Stephanie Roberts went to undergrad at UCD and met while in school here. They moved over to the Bay Area for graduate school and moved back to the Sacramento Area to be closer to their extended families and raise their two young boys, Hunter and Cole.

Kathy Magrino (Captain) + Karen Roth (Co-Captains) We are welcoming our newest member, Britt Crennell and also Nan Saunders is a returning member. The Niners have been busy in the past month. On March 15th, after a wet round of golf, Niners gathered at Donna Prebys’ home to enjoy a St. Patrick’s Day potluck lunch. Many got into the spirit by wearing green. On March 30th, seven Niners attended the Women’s Nine Hole Golf Association (WNHGA) Rules Seminar at North Ridge Country Club. On March 31st five Niners participated in the WNHGA Open Day at Woodbridge Country Club. Two of our participants placed in the competition – Kathy Magrino won 4th place in Flight 2 and Lisa Adda’s won 5th place in Flight 3. In the photo, Kathy and Lisa are modeling the new Niner shirts, which just arrived last week.

Our Handicap tournament begins on April 28. The low net over the field in the Qualifying Round is the Medalist and becomes the #1 seed in bracket play. The remaining results from the qualifying Round determine the brackets for 3 rounds of Match Play. The Handicap Champion will be crowned on Thursday May 19. It’s a lot more fun that it sounds.
