GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE Rusty Seymour | General Manager

The first Quill of 2022! It was another roller coaster ride for everyone in 2021 as we continued to navigate our way through

the

COVID-19

pandemic

personally

and

professionally. I remain proud of our team here at El Macero for staying strong and united through all the ups and downs. I certainly hope sometime in 2022 we can get back to “normal” if that will ever exist again. I am excited for another busy year on the golf course and fun events scheduled. As many of you may have heard, one of our beloved members, Joan Partain, lost her three-year battle with pancreatic cancer on December 13, 2020. Chuck, Penny, Chip, Tracy, and Matt were all with her and feel blessed to have shared the last three years together. Joan and Chuck became members of El Macero Country Club in 1975. Joan spent many hours golfing, playing bridge with her friends, and going to the pool with her kids and grandkids. She built friendships here that she treasured. She was a valuable member of the Club and she will be missed.

The following members are celebrating a milestone anniversary this January: Proprietary · John + Tracy Dewit - 10 years · Angie + Isaak Heitzeberg - 10 years · David + Ashley Nicholson - 1 year · Paul + Marna Ghiglieri - 1 year · Richard + Heidi Senitte - 1 year · Lee Pflugrath + Laura Winton - 1 year · Miranda Siller-Swift + Andrew Swift 1 year · Thomas Armelino + Margarita Cuizon-Armelino - 1 year · Sean + Marla Cowan - 1 year · Jeremy + Kristen Higgins - 1 year · Greg + Erin Phister - 1 year · Kevin Horan + Jane Ryan - 1 year

Single Golfer · James + Ellen Schiavenza - 1 year

Young Professional · · · ·

Roshan Patel - 1 year Hiten + Dipti Patel - 1 year Vishal Patel - 1 year Qihao Zhu - 1 year

Keep your eyes open for some communication in the next month about a couple scheduled EMCC Volunteer days. I would like to get started on these consistently again as it is a great way to get together and help with various projects around the golf course including sanding divots, etc. Don’t worry; coffee, donuts, and bagels will be here for you. Enjoy your weekend and stay safe!

AGRONOMY

Joe Cuneo | Superintendent So far it has been a pretty wet year. We received 6.92 inches of rain in December and 13.39 through the winter so far. The rain has been needed for a while now as we have been in drought conditions for quite some time, but it has brought some challenges with it. Excessive rain and moisture on dormant Bermuda grass is not always pretty. As many of you have noticed, earthworm activity is accelerated in wet conditions resulting in more castings and more mud at the surface. As the surface is walked on or driven across, the mud will smear. While playing, please try to avoid walking through these areas as they will not recover or fill in until spring. Please do not take pull carts across greens as well. The mud from these tracks leaves unsightly lines, contaminates the soil below and will leave clumps on the surface disrupting fellow golfer's putts. The landscape improvement has received extra attention the past few weeks. We’ve removed some old and overgrown plant material in certain areas, installed weed block, and will be replanting these areas soon. Once everything is planted, we will add fresh mulch for a finished look.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE Keith Culley | Food and Beverage Director

The Holidays and 2021 are behind us and 2022 is on its way already. The Food and Beverage Team is eager for this year and the events we have planned. We kicked off the year with some deep cleaning of the banquet storage room and kitchen, removing all appliances and cleaning them each. We also purged unused items in our storage areas and made more room for the banquet chairs we purchased toward the end of last year. This football season has been pretty exciting for California teams (GO NINERS!). To top it off, the Super Bowl will be hosted in Los Angeles at the Rams stadium. If you are planning a party this year, we are here to help! We will have platters of game time food for you to order along with specials in the Bar throughout the day. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner as well. Be on the lookout for the menu Chef has been working on and celebrate at the Club the day before The Big Game!

MEMBERSHIP HAPPENINGS Karyn Yarris | Membership and Marketing Director

Who can believe it is already 2022?! We started off this year exactly the way we ended 2021: busy! We remain seasonally busier than normal as we remain at historically high levels of both prospect inquiries and wait list interest. Social membership remains popular and we are tracking toward a sell-out in that category as well. Make sure to let your friends and family know that if they are interested in membership, now is the perfect time! As we move into 2022, we are focused on member experience and streamlining your experience to ensure convenience. To that end, we are launching a fun promotion to help save trees, time and money! If you are currently receiving your monthly statements in the mail, you can choose to switch to email delivery and as a thank you, you will have your choice of a complimentary beverage or dessert! To make the change and receive your certificate for a complimentary beverage or dessert simply call the Club and speak to Rachel at (530) 753-3363 or send her a quick email at rachel.slusser@troon.com letting her know you would like to switch to email delivery and she will make that change for you and email you the certificate of your choice! Happy New Year to each of you and let’s make it an amazing 2022!

EVERYTHING GOLF Willie Toney | Director of Golf Operations Happy New Year! It is a new year and already we are faced with another COVID-19 variation. Now is not the time to get complacent. So mask up to keep everyone safe! As our membership has grown to full capacity so has the demand for tee time reservations. Round and Tee Time analysis continues with significant progress being made. There has been a noticeable change in behavior or should I say, a sense of urgency to update/modify TBD’s. Keep up the good work. The entire membership appreciates it! Sanding Your Divots - as you know, over the past several weeks wet weather has restricted golf carts from the course or restricted the carts to the rough. Consequently, more golfers walk rather than ride during this stretch of the year. We are seeing an unfortunate trend of divots not being filled with sand. Please remember to take a sand bottle with you in order to fill your divot after your shot. Also, when taking a cart and walking out to your ball in the fairway, bring the sand bottle from the cart with you when playing your shot.

NINERS

Kathy Magrino + Karen Roth (Co-Captains) The El Macero Niners are kicking off a great 2022 season with 62 members! In December we added six new members – Ginger Bertero, Trish Bosco, Suzanne Kimmel, Blanche McNaughton, Stephanie Rubinstein, and Kathleen Thompson. Beginning in January, Kathy Magrino, our previous Co-Captain is moving up to the Captain’s position and Karen Roth our former secretary is moving to the Co-Captain position. Let’s get to know them: Kathy and her husband, Tom, have been members of El Macero CC for 12 years. She was born in Chicago and earned her Nursing degree from Boise State University. Kathy has been an emergency room nurse at Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego and Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage. She has three children and one and a half (one on the way) grandchildren. Besides golf, Kathy enjoys playing bridge and mahjong, and traveling. As seasoned Niners know, Kathy takes holidays and special occasions very seriously, like on St. Patrick’s Day she wore 56 green items, including three hats! Karen and her husband, Harrison, have been El Macero CC members for 6 years. She was born in Riverside and earned her degree in Mechanical Engineering from UC Davis. Karen was employed by PG&E for 35 years, holding numerous engineering and operations leadership positions. She has two children, two grandchildren, and a step grandson. Besides golf, Karen is particularly interested in genealogy and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren. Karen and Harrison met at the UC Davis Picnic Day and their first date was golfing at the Davis Municipal Golf Course.
