a couple more big rainstorms. It is looking unlikely but I am remaining hopeful. With the new fiscal year recently starting on March 1, we have added 3 guest passes onto all the Proprietary primary member accounts. The Board of Directors approved this annual process a couple of years ago to continue to look for ways to enhance the benefits of being a Proprietary member. Enjoy!

AGRONOMY Ryan Macnair | Superintendent The past few weeks since I’ve arrived here at El Macero have been exciting, busy, and fun. I have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of you (forgive me if I don’t remember your name, there are a lot of new faces!). Being a Southern California native, I have started to settle in and adapt to the last few weeks of COLD weather. We had a three day stretch where temperatures at the course dropped to 26 degrees, which is a record for me! Although the Bermudagrass fairways are still dormant from frost forming temperatures, in the next few weeks we will begin to see color changes course wide as we get into the warmer temperatures of spring. The Clubhouse landscape improvements are underway, and the crew began installing new plantings this week. The landscape fabric will be reinstalled post-planting to help control weeds in these beds and layered with mulch as the final touch. This project will help beautify the front entrance of our Club and parking lot areas, an important aspect as this is the first thing not only our members see, but everyone’s guests as well. In order to keep our greens healthy and retain fast and firm playing conditions, aerification is a process that will continue to be beneficial multiple times a year. Spring aerification for the greens is coming up on March 21 and 22 and we will be closed for these days in order to complete this important and necessary process. I am thrilled to be a part of the team here at El Macero and thank you for being so welcoming. I hope everyone enjoys the next few weeks as we begin to warm up and I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE Keith Culley | Food and Beverage Director

This year is about fresh starts and reenergizing, and nothing does this more for us than a Troon Food and Beverage Summit. Earlier this month our Catering Manager, Morgan, our Sous Chef, Angel, and I took to the skies to end up at North River Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to meet with 110 Club level F&B professionals and the Troon Corporate F&B team for 3 days of morning to evening education. About half of the attendees were new to Troon which shows how fortunate we were here at El Macero to keep everyone employed during the pandemic. We dove deep into current hiring market struggles and how to deal with them. We discussed supply chain issues and what Troon Corporate is doing to get our properties the best support possible. We even had a breakout where half of the lesson was designing buffets on a budget. I can say all three of us came back with more knowledge than we left with and excitement in how we are going to apply it this year. Oh… and we came back with a trophy! Morgan and I submitted a cocktail where the key ingredient must be a Truly; low and behold, we brought home gold. The cocktail, ‘Truly’ a Pop of Ginger, will be a feature in this month’s “Cocktail’s with Culley” class. The class is currently sold out, but if you would like to be added to the wait list, please contact Rachel in the Front Office.

The Troon F&B team announced the addition of a F&B Council at the Summit. The council will consist of 10 Club professionals who will act as a catalyst

and

to

improve support at the field level and assist in ideation for our constantly changing industry. I was honored to be offered and accept a seat on the council this year. We are set to meet virtually once a month and I’m eager to represent El Macero as the program develops. We have a few new hires we added to our Kitchen team this month. Leo, our new lunch cook comes from

Bay

where

Eren has taken a leap of faith into the Back of House world to learn from the best, Chef Kaharim and Angel. She is new to F&B and is wanting to grow. You’ll see her working the pizza line in the evenings to start.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE Keith Culley | Food and Beverage Director

The Crab Feed was our first “normal” event since the mask mandate was lifted and it didn’t disappoint. We had 95 attendees, and everyone was all smiles. Next week we have St. Patrick’s Day and will be offering Irish Soda Bread, Corn Beef, Shephard’s Pie, and Irish Beef Stew. We didn’t leave out the booze this year, Guinness on Draft is still waiting for a nitro tank due to manufacturing and supply issues; however, we will be pouring Guinness Draft in the can and our bartender, Jacobo, put together a Jameson Orange Old Fashioned for you all Thursday night. Enjoy it all with an Irish Folk Band for some live entertainment. Thank you, Donna Prebys, for seeking them out. See you all at the Club!

MEMBERSHIP HAPPENINGS Karyn Yarris | Membership and Marketing Director

I hope everyone is having a great start to March! Membership inquiries continue to hold very strong as does our wait list in all golf categories. We are still accepting new wait list members. We are heading into what is traditionally our "busy Social inquiry season" and we are nearing a sell out in Social memberships as well. I wanted to remind everyone that if you know someone interested in Social membership, please encourage them to reach out to me soon in order to avoid a possible wait list in that category. I’m excited to say that with club life returning to a more normal post COVID environment we will be bringing back Member Appreciation week! It’s a week filled with fun and entertainment celebrating you, our awesome members. Stay tuned for details in the coming weeks.

EVERYTHING GOLF

Willie Toney | Director of Golf Operations It's that time of the year when we say so long to the short days! We will spring forward happily to gain more daylight… for most of us golfers, this is great! More time to sharpen our games for the upcoming tournament season. Hooray!!! Speaking of tournaments, this weekend will be our first competitive event of 2022. The NCGA 4 Person Zone Qualifier will be contested this Saturday and Sunday. Good luck to all who signed up for the event! For those of you coming out of hibernation, Player Development Director Kevin Estrella, has a number of programs for golfers of all skill levels. Be certain to check the club calendar and Kevin's Quill article for upcoming clinics and lesson information. Lastly, I want to remind the membership to leave the golf course in better shape than you found it! Which simply means fix your ball mark plus 3 more, sand your divots, and dispose of your broken tees. Ryan and the entire Maintenance Crew will really appreciate it!

NINER'S

Kathy Magrino + Karen Roth (Co-Captains) On a windy February 15th, the Niners enjoyed their first game day for 2022. The Circle of Love (putts are good within a putter’s length radius) was especially popular! Niners showed game day spirit with their outfits and cart decorations. Congratulations to the 1st place golf game winners Linda Lingbloom, Pam McCabe, and Nancy McDonough with an amazing gross score of 33 (3 birdies) and a net score of 19 for returning the special pink ball. We had a very strong 2nd place team: Karen Roth, Jacqueline Gray, Theresa Mariani, and Kathy Alger with a gross score of 34 (2 birdies) and a net score of 20 for returning the pink ball. Best decorated carts went to Lisa Qvistgaard, Suzanne Kimmel, and Trisha Bosco.

At the March Niner's meeting, Claudia Salquist, our newly appointed Golf Etiquette Chairperson distributed a handout, “Rules to Observe when Carrying a Smart Phone to the Golf Course”. Five rules were discussed: 1 – Shut your cell phone down; 2 – If you can’t turn it off, at least turn off the sound; 3 – No cell phone conversations on the course; 4 – Only make or take a call if it’s an emergency; 5 – Use Apps and Golf Software responsibly. If you are using your phone or a GPS device to read the yardage, it should be silenced.

WOMEN'S GOLF GROUP (WGG) Diane Kavrell (Captain) and Nancy Maul (Co-Captain)

Our season is starting to get into full swing. Sorry I could not resist saying that! Our mighty group of 65 women battle the elements (cold weather, wind, rain, lightning fast greens and lack of grass) to compete in what crazy games our Tournament Chair Erin Capps has in store for us every Thursday. Some days we have partners, some days we are foursomes, and some days we are just left alone with our putter to count our putts! We do it because we love the game and we all truly care about our golf family. Last week we battled it out with our partners to a round of “Best Ball of the twosome”. Winners are pictured below. Handsome guy in the middle is Adam Levine, I mean Andy Schroeder.

TENNIS LIST (YOUR INFO NEEDED) For those who may not be aware, there is a list of tennis playing members posted on the El Macero website. We need your help to get this list up to date. Over the last year we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of players at the club, many of whom are not yet on the list. We’ve also added a place for you to list your level of play to make it easier for folks to connect with others who are at or near their same experience level. Please visit the tennis list to make sure your information is included and current. APRIL ADULT CLINICS I’m looking forward to holding three clinics in April, and I will continue having the clinics from 9:00 – 10:30am. Each session is limited to 8 members, and registrations are handled through the club’s online system. If you are having any trouble with registration, please call the office for assistance. The cost for each clinic is $25/person and I ask that you PLEASE cancel your reservation more than 24 hours prior if you cannot make it to allow waitlisted participants to have your spot. And if you still need time to figure out which one suits you the best, Dave can enroll you in his demo program. SUNDAY, APRIL 10 - SERVE +1 AND RETURN +1 - When it comes to getting the point started in tennis, we often talk about the serve and return. Those two shots are important for sure, but so is the next one! For example, we can get caught off guard when we stare too long at our serve, hoping that it lands in, instead of preparing ourselves for the return when it does. In this clinic we will practice making serves plus the next shot and returns plus the next shot. When you consistently make the first two balls of each point, you apply pressure to your opponent, often leading to more points won. SUNDAY, APRIL 24 - SPRINGTIME SINGLES - It’s been a while since I’ve had a clinic dedicated to singles. Playing singles can be a lot of fun, and a great workout! In this clinic we will go over some simple singles strategies and do some drills that will allow you to practice those skills. Then you will have a chance to play singles points against your fellow members.

We have a storage shed inside the tennis courts where the ball machine is housed. If you’d like to use it, first reserve a court using the online reservation system. Upon arrival to the pro shop, you will be given the key to the courts/shed, along with the battery and remote for the ball machine. Even if you’re not planning to use the ball machine, please make sure to reserve a court using the online reservation system any time you plan to play. Happy hitting!
