OUTDOOR CINEMA

WELCOME TO THE WINTER CINEMA!

Tromsø International Film Festival takes pride in offering outdoor screenings to all audiences at Stortorget (the main square). The screenings take place every morning and afternoon from Tuesday 14 to Friday 17 January, perfectly framed by the snow (hopefully!) and darkness of winter.

At 09:00, an extensive short film program for children is screened. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday programs are tailor-made for children in primary school, while the Friday program is intended for the youngest ones.

The 16:00 screenings will include short film programs, music videos and snowboard films. We will also screen some programs in the evenings – see our website for detailed program.

Catch a short in between ordinary festival screenings, or put on your parkas to watch the entire program (each Winter Cinema session lasts for 30 to 50 minutes).

Verdens Beste Familiedag

På lørdag får du se to filmer:

BENDIK OG MONSTERET

REGI: Frank Mosvold, Kool Productions

PYSE vant barnejuryens pris for beste kortfilm under Verdens Beste i 2013.

Saturday is family day at the Winter Cinema – a kick-off for TIFF's children's film festival Verdens Beste, May 8-11, 2014.

It starts at 14:00. Fruit, snacks and organic hot chocolate is served. Before the opening, at 12:00, the Kulturskolen orchestra plays a concert of film music at Tromsø Public Library.

Screenings:

BENDIK OG MONSTERET “Bendik and the monster”

DIRECTOR: Frank Mosvold

A brand new animated short film, presented by TIFF, about Bendik, a little boy, and the monster that lives under his bed. Bendik likes to play with his finger puppets. And the monster likes to sing and entertain rather than frighten people. A witty story about identity and expectations.

PYSE “Sissy”

DIRECTOR: Siri Rutlin

In this short film for children, inspired by the horror genre, Idunn is seven years old and home alone.

COAST OF DEATH COSTA DA MORTE

DIR: Lois Patiño / Spain 2013 / 1h 21m / Zeitun Films

Costa da Morte is a region in the Northwest of Galicia (Spain) that was considered the end of the world during the Roman period. It has taken its dramatic name from the numerous shipwrecks that happened in this area of rocks, mist and storms.

We cross this land observing the people who inhabit it, fishermen, gatherers of shellfish and loggers. We witness traditional craftsmen who maintain both an intimate relationship and an antagonistic battle with the vastness of this territory. The wind, the stones, the sea and the fire are characters in this film. Through them we approach the mystery of the landscape, understanding it as a unified ensemble with man, his history and legends.

THE DIRECTOR:

Lois Patiño (b. 1983) is a Spanish filmmaker and artist. He studied psychology at the Complutense University of Madrid, and film at the TAI School, at NYFA in New York and at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. He has developed courses of videocreation under the guidance of Katherin Sieverding in the UdK of Berlin, and in different ateliers with artist and filmmakers such as Joan Jonas, Donald Kuspit, Pedro Costa, Víctor Erice, José Luis Guerín and Daniel Canogar.

THURSDAY JANUARY 16, 16:00

MAN OF IRON CZLOWIEK Z ZELAZA

DIR: Andrzej Wajda / Poland 1981 / 2h 27m

The film continues the story of Maciej Tomczyk, the son of Mateusz Birkut, the protagonist of Wajda's earlier film MAN OF MARBLE (1976). Maciej, a young worker, is involved in the anti-communist labor movement and described as “the man who started the Gdańsk shipyard strike”. A radio journalist working for the communist regime is given the task of slandering Maciej. Maciej has a strong resemblance to Lech Wałęsa (who appears as himself in the film).

Made during the brief thaw in communist censorship that appeared between the formation of Solidarity in August 1980 and its suppression in December 1981, the film is remarkably critical of the regime. It won the Palme d'Or and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival.

THE DIRECTOR:

Andrzej Wajda (b. 1926) is a recipient of an honorary Academy Award and possibly the most prominent member of the unofficial Polish Film School (1955 to 1963). He is particularly known for his trilogy of war films: A GENERATION (1954), KANAL (1956) and ASHES AND DIAMONDS (1958). Four of his films have been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.

WE ARE NOT LIKE THEM

DIR: Declan Clarke / Ireland, Germany 2013 / 45m / Declan Clarke

The film connects four different locations in Europe and invites a quiet contemplation of these places in their current state. It uses the tropes of the early 20th century documentary film and the mid-century espionage film to contextualise them. In order of appearance, the sites are the former Wallsend and Walker shipyards in Newcastle upon Tyne; Eisenhüttenstadt on the Eastern border of Germany; Nowa Huta on the outskirts of Kraków in Poland; and the Groupe Scolaire L’Octobre, a primary school in the Alfortville district of Paris.

The film maker will be present for an introduction, and for a Q&A session after the screening.

THE DIRECTOR:

Declan Clarke (b. 1974) studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, and at Chelsea College of Art in London. In 2002/03 he was awarded the PS1MoMA International Residency Program by The Arts Council of Ireland. His work have been presented in a number of solo and group exhibitions. His films has been screened at FACT in Liverpool, Serpentine Gallery Cinema in London, FID Marseille, Avantgard ist Keine Strömung and Artists House, Brno, Czech Republic.

THE FORGOTTEN SPACE

DIR: Allan Sekula, Noël Burch / Netherlands, Austria 2010 / 1h 52m / Doc.Eye Films

THE FORGOTTEN SPACE follows container cargo aboard ships, barges, trains and trucks. It listens to workers, engineers, planners, politicians, and those marginalized by the global transport system. We visit displaced farmers and villagers in Holland and Belgium, underpaid truck drivers in Los Angeles, seafarers aboard mega-ships going in shuttle between Asia and Europe, and factory workers in China whose low wages are the fragile key to the whole puzzle. And in Bilbao, we discover the most sophisticated expression of the belief that the maritime economy, and the sea itself, is somehow obsolete.

Mixing descriptive documentary, interviews, archive stills, clips and footage, the film tries to describe the contemporary maritime world in relation to the complex symbolic legacy of the sea.

THE DIRECTORS:

Allan Sekula (1951–2013) was an artist from Erie, Pennsylvania. Working with photographic sequences, written texts, slide shows and sound recordings, he mostly stayed away from the moving image, until TSUKIJI (2001), a “city symphony” set in Tokyo's giant fish market.

Noël Burch (b. 1932) is from San Francisco and lives in France. He graduated from the Institut Des Hautes Etudes Cinèmatographiques in 1954. While primarily known for his theoretical writings, he has also directed over twenty titles, mostly documentaries.

SILENT FILM CONCERT: THE HOUSE ON TRUBNAYA

DOM NA TRUBNOY

SOVIET UNION 1928 DIRECTOR: Boris Barnet SCREENPLAY: Nikolay Erdman, Anatoli Marienhof, Vadim Shershenevich, Viktor Shklovsky CINEMATOGRAPHY: Yevgeny Alekseyev CAST: Vera Maretskaya, Vladimir Vogel, Yelena Tyapkina, Sergey Komarov, Anel Sudakevich, Ada Vojtsik, Aleksandr Gromov RUNNING TIME: 1h 4m SOURCE: Gosfilmofond

Boris Barnet's THE HOUSE ON TRUBNAYA tells the story of Parasha, a peasant girl who moves to Moscow with her pet duck and finds a job as a maid for the barber Golikov. Parasha may be a simple farm girl, but she is not duped by the false charms of the petite-bourgeoisie. Instead, she joins a trade union for home workers and thus demonstrates her revolutionary spirits.

THE HOUSE ON TRUBNAYA is a lively comedy, a celebration of the new Soviet way of life and a social commentary to the troublesome 1920s. Unknown to Western audiences for 60 years, it is now seen as a masterpiece of Soviet silent cinema, in the way it combines great comic timing with avant-garde storytelling techiques. We are honored to present it in a silent film concert with new original music, performed by a fabulous ensemble led by the Tromsø-based cellist Bernt Simen Lund. Don't miss out!

CAST: Daniel Gjerde, Hanne Backe-Hansen, Kjetil Krogstad Skrede RUNNING TIME: 1h 27m PRODUCER: Odd G. Iversen, Anders Tangen SOURCE: Tromsø Filmklubb

VAMPYR is one of the absolute classics of vampire cinema. It’s the first talkie from Carl Theodor Dreyer, one of the greatest directors from the pioneer days of Scandinavian and European cinema. Loosely based on a collection of tales of the supernatural (In a Glass Darkly by J. Sheridan Le Fanus), it bears close resemblance to the traditional Nosferatu story.

This material is well known from both earlier and later vampire films, and VAMPYR also draws on narrative elements from the silent era. Still, with its heavy symbolism and subjective style it comes across as an inventive piece of film art – a must for film and vampire lovers. Screened in a restored German version with English subtitles.

THE DIRECTOR

Carl Theodor Dreyer Nilsson (1889–1968) is generally seen as Denmark’s first great film director. Dreyer was not a man of artistic compromises. As his films were seldom commercial successes and investors were hard to find, he also worked as a journalist for most of his filmmaking career, which lasted from 1912 until 1964.

FILMOGRAPHY (UTVALG/SELECTION):

1919 BLADE AF SATANS BOG / LEAVES FROM SATAN’S BOOK 1926 GLOMDALSBRUDEN / THE BRIDE OF GLOMDAL 1928 JEANNE D’ARCS LIDELSE OG DØD / THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC 1943 VREDENS DAG / DAY OF WRATH 1955 ORDET 1965 GERTRUD Filmens fullstendige tittel er DE UMORALSKE – ELLER TANNLEGENS DATTER, BLIKKENSLAGERENS SØNN OG DEN FORLATTE STORMANNSYNDLINGEN.

Former soldier William and former prostitute and single mother Camilla are having trouble with the Norwegian welfare system; they cannot seem to get enough money from it. They are kicked off welfare, and when the authorities want to take Camilla’s baby into custody the couple decides to drive to Spain. But for them to afford it, Camilla has to return to prostitution.

This is a scathing look at the modern Norwegian society, and those who want to take from it without giving anything back. It is also a dark and funny comedy that does not pull any punches. The director feels that he has finally found his voice with this film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was compared to von Triers THE IDIOTS.

THE DIRECTOR

Lars Daniel Krutzkoff Jacobsen (b. 1962) has worked for the Norwegian National Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and directed a number of trash- and art films. His short film PRECIOUS MOMENTS (2003) gave him much acclaim. His first feature film, 5 LIES, premiered in 2007.

Director Ole Giæver's first feature film opened the 2011 edition of Tromsø International Film Festival. In this work-in-progress presentation, Giæver gives a preview of some of the recorded material from his second feature, which will premiere in autumn 2014. Named INN I NATUREN (“Into the nature”), it tells the story of Martin, a man in his thirties with a strong urge to get away from his job and family and escape into the woods or mountains. Although it can be seen as a continuation of Giæver's previous work, it has a more personal touch and experimental form.

The presentation will be held in Norwegian only.

Ekstrem film krever ekstreme omgivelser!

This year TIFF invites you to a very special screening Friday night, aboard the Hurtigruten while at shore in Tromsø. And what film could possibly fit better for such an extreme setting than DEAD SNOW, Tommy Wirkola's cult classic from 2009? A great success in Sundance and Cannes, this Polar Nazizombie-feelgood-splatter-comedy follows a group of friends on an Easter holiday trip in the mountains. They are in for a treat, but of a very different nature than they expect. It turns out that these mountains are home to a batallion of German soldiers who were brutally killed by the local resistance towards the end of World War II. Now they have returned as zombies bound for revenge.

This midnight screening will take place on deck, and you can buy food and drinks (you might need it!). This is an opportunity not to be missed!
