På tiff er alle visninger og filmer spesielle, men noen er mer spesielle enn andre. Dette programmet gir deg et bredt spekter av unike filmopplevelser, med alt fra stumfilmkonserter til visninger på snøkino. De fleste av visningene finner sted bare én gang i løpet av festivaluka, så det kan være lurt å begynne her når du skal legge opp årets festivalløype!

A special screening is not like other screenings, to point out the obvious. In this sidebar, we present a whole range of singular film experiences, like the silent film concerts and happenings at the Snow Screen. Most of these screenings are also unique in the sense that they take place only once during the festival, so this might be the place to start planning your schedule!

Velkommen til stumfilmkonsert: Årets film er en sovjetisk propagandamesterverk og krigsallegori, til flunkende ny musikk av et lag av norske og russiske musikere.Mikhail Katatozovs the nail in the boot var laget som propaganda: Den handler om en russisk soldat som mislykkes i å hente hjelp til et tog med krigsmateriell, fordi støvlene hans er i så dårlig forfatning. Han stilles for krigsrett, men protesterer og antyder at han er utsatt for sabotasje av støvlemakerne. Den sovjetiske sensuren var ikke begeistret verken for budskapet eller filmspråket. Sett med dagens øyne er the nail in the boot en intens og fengslende film med heftig klipping, nærbilder og dristige kameravinkler, særlig i scenene fra slagmarken.

Med musikk laget og framført av Christian Bollingsæter og Jon Eirik Boska fra Tromsø og Andrej Iudin og Evgenia Ustinova fra Petrozavodsk blir dette en forestilling å se fram til!

A silent propagandist masterpiece and war allegory – presented with a brand new musical score, composed and performed by Norwegian and Russian artists Christian Hollingsæter, Jon Eirik Boska, Andrey Iudin and Evgenia Ustinova.

the nail in the boot was intended as propaganda. A Soviet soldier is sent to notify headquarters that his armored train needs aid, but he fails to reach his destination and the train is lost, because his poorly made combat boots cripple him. During the soldier’s subsequent court martial, he protests and suggests that the slipshod workers are saboteurs. In Kalatozov’s war fable, the attention is drawn both to the message and to the mastery of the film-maker itself: The combat scenes are intense and unforgettable: frenetic montage, extreme close-ups and low angles make the viewer feel as if they too are being bombarded.

REgISSØR

Mikhail Kalatozov (1903–1973 ) var en sovjetisk filmskaper fra Georgia. Han tilhørte samme generasjon av filmskapere som Sergej Eisenstein og Lev Kulesjov, var kameramann for sistnevnte og tilknyttet Goskinprom-studioet i Tbilisi. Hans film TRANENE FLYR ble nominert til Gullpalmen i Cannes som første russiske film.

THE DIRECTOR

Mikhail Kalatozov (1903–1973) was a contemporary of Kuleshov and Eisenstein. He grew up in Georgia and got to work as a cameraman for Kuleshov from the late 1920s. Kalatozov later worked at the Goskinprom Gruzii studio in Tbilisi. His film FLY WITH THE GRANES became the first Russian film to garner the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Stumfilm møter opera i denne forestillingen som tar oss med til operaens gullalder og filmens barndom. Da filmen slo igjennom rundt forrige århundreskifte, tok den opp i seg operaens melodramatiske oppbygning, musikk og stjernedyrking. På denne tida ble hele operaer ofte filmet og vist til akkompagnement av solist og orkester. Denne formen har inspirert Nordnorsk Opera og Symfoniorkester (noso) til forestillingen Der schöne Tod («Den vakre døden»).

Tittelen spiller på operaens typiske kvinneroller – sjansen er stor for at kvinner i operaer blir drept, begår selvmord, forgiftes eller tas av snøskred før teppefall. Publikum får møte alt fra Carmen til Isolde i en serie dødsscener fra den romantiske operaens absolutte klimaks – ledsaget av klipp fra glemte «operastumfilmer». Gå ikke glipp av denne unike forestillingen!

Opera kills women! That is, if they are on stage. More likely than not, a female opera character will be stabbed to death, commit suicide, be poisoned or taken by an avalanche before the curtain falls. But why does she die? This is one of the questions posed by Der schöne Tod («The Beautiful Death), an opera installation developed by the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra (noso).

The performance consists of a series of death scenes from famous romantic operas. But the golden age of opera also saw the birth of film – a new popular medium that would adopt many traits from opera, including its melodramatic plot and music. Often, whole operas were filmed and screened with live music played. Der schöne Tod is inspired by these hidden multi-media treasures, and will feature clips from several «silent film operas». Don’t miss out!

Historien bak denne filmen er mildt sagt fascinerende. Kim Jong-il, den gangen «bare» diktatorsønn, var filmentusiast og gjorde iherdige forsøk på å få fart på det lukkede landets filmproduksjon. Til slutt så man ingen annen utvei enn å anskaffe kompetanse fra utlandet – ved å kidnappe den kjente sørkoreanske filmskaperen Shin Sang-ok. Etter noen år i fangeleir var regissøren samarbeidsvillig og spilte inn flere filmer i Nord-Korea, før han klarte å stikke av i 1986 under et besøk på en filmfestival i Wien.

Før Shin Sang-ok rømte, rakk han å lage pulgasari, intet mindre enn den nordkoreanske kommunistversjonen av godzilla. I føydaltidas Korea blir en risdukke på magisk vis til et metallspisende monster, som støtter fattige bønders opprør mot den onde, rike kongen. I rollen som monsteret finner vi den japanske Godzilla-veteranen Kenpachiro Satsuma. Etter å ha sett Hollywoodproduksjonen av godzilla i 1998 uttalte han at han foretrakk pulgasari!

The story behind this film is astonishing: In his younger days, when he was «just» a dictator’s son, Kim Jong-il had a passion for film and worked hard to get film production up and running in the isolated country. Eventually, he saw no other solution than to kidnap the well-known South Korean filmmaker Shin Sang-ok. After a few years in detention in North Korea, Shin agreed to cooperate. He made several films in North Korea, until he was able to escape during a visit to a film festival in Vienna in 1986.

Before his escape, Shin completed pulgasari: a communist version of godzilla, set in ancient feudal Korea, where a rice doll magically turns into a metal-eating monster supporting the farmers’ uprising against the rich and evil king. Japanese Godzilla-veteran Kenpachiro Satsuma, who plays the monster, has stated that he prefers pulgasari to the Hollywood blockbuster godzilla from 1998!

Shin Sang-ok var kjent som «prinsen av koreansk film», med en rekke suksesser på 50- og 60-tallet. Etter en periode med kommersielle fiaskoer ble han i 1978 kidnappet til Nord-Korea, hvor han lagde sju filmer for regimet. Shin flyktet i 1986, og bosatte seg i USA. Han døde i 2006.

THE DIRECTOR:

Shin Sang-ok was known as «the prince of Korean film» in the 1950s and ‘60s. After directing some less successful films, he was abducted to North-Korea i 1978, and made seven films there in cooperation with the authorities. Shin escapted in 1986 and moved to the US. He died in 2006.

THE NOmAD’S TRAIL

Fra den gule ørkenen i sør til de snøkledde viddene i nord: Denne dokumentaren følger Inge Line, ei samisk jente fra Karasjok, og Tamer, en beduinsk gutt fra Negev-ørkenen i Israel. Inge Line er i ferd med å øremerke sin første rein, en symbolsk handling som vil knytte henne til dyrene og den samiske tradisjonen for alltid. Tamer, på sin side, ser ikke hvordan han skal komme seg ut i verden hvis familien blir værende i bosettingen i ørkenen. Men å flytte er ikke bare lett.

the nomad’s trail er en historie om å slites mellom tradisjonene og den globale tidsalderens uante muligheter, og barna blir både til ungdommer og venner på Skype løpet av filmen.

From the yellow sand in the south to the snow-covered planes of the North: This character-driven documentary follows Inge Line, a Sami girl from Karasjok, and Tamer, a Bedouin boy from the Negev desert in Israel. Inge Line is about to go through the ritual of ear marking a reindeer. This symbolic act will bind her to her community forever, but she finds it difficult to perform. Tamer, on his part, has a hard time combining his curiosity about the world with the Bedouin way of life. But moving is not easy.

the nomad’s trail is a story of growth and of struggling with the demands of tradition vs. the temptations of the global age. In the course of the film, the two kids become teenagers and friends on Skype.

The film is developed with the support of Below Zero 2010.

Yossi Somer (f. 1956) er en israelsk regissør, bosatt i Norge siden 2005. Filmene hans har vunnet åtte israelske Academy Awards, og flere er vist på Berlin internasjonale filmfestival. Han lagde Israels første musikkvideo (DON’T LIGHT ME A CANDLE) og har samarbeidet med musikere som Roger Waters, DJ Dorfmeister og Jan Garbarek.

The Israeli director Yossi Somer (b. 1956) has lived in Norway since 2005. His films have won eight Israeli Academy Awards, and several have featured in Berlin International Film Festival. He has also collaborated with musicians such as Roger Waters, DJ Dorfmeister and Jan Garbarek.

med hjertet i halsen handler om den vellykkede reklamemannen Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) som rykkes ut av sitt komfortable Madison Avenue-liv og virvles inn i en tilværelse der han jages og trues på livet både av utenlandske spioner og amerikansk politi. Thornhill legger ut på en odyssé som via Chicago og øde prærielandskap bringer ham til det berømte Mount Rushmore-monumentet der filmens dramatiske finale utspiller seg.

Spenningsfilmens ubestridte mester lar her dialog, skuespill, klipp, musikk og scenografi gå opp i en høyere enhet. The successful Madison Avenue advertizing executive Roger O. Thornhill is thrown out of his comfortable New York life and whirled into a world of kidnapping, murder and romance. On the run from both the police and coldwar-spies, he is attacked by airplanes on a Midwestern cornfield and chased towards a certain death on the famous monument of Mount Rushmore.

north by northwest is one of the best films from the master of suspense, Sir Alfred Hitchcock (even though a different Hitchcock title, namely vertigo, has been named «the greatest film of all time», in the 2012 Sight and Sound Poll). Dialogue, acting, editing, photography and scenography merge into an impressive entity that has continued to move cinema-goers from 1959 until this day. This action-packed and surprisingly modern film is a real gem!

Alfred Hitchcock’s (1899–1980) career as a filmmaker lasted from the 1920s and almost to his death. His filmography contains more than fifty films, and his influence can be seen and felt in the works of many later directors. Hitchcock made films in England until 1939 when he moved his filmmaking to the US, never looking back.

Mange europeere aksepterer innvandrere som er på flukt fra krig og fattigdom. Vanskeligere er det med folk som vil til Europa for å bli som oss. Dokumentarfilmen fata morgana setter søkelys på problemene rundt illegal innvandring ved å fortelle de personlige historiene. Det handler om enkeltmennesker med sterk vilje til å følge sin egen drøm, så langt at de til og med setter livet på spill. Rundt havna i Tanger i Marokko vrimler det av unge menn som drømmer om det de oppfatter som vestlig livsstil. Mange av dem forsøker å gjemme seg i lastevogner for å komme seg til Europa.

De marokkanske ungdommenes reise gjenspeiler en urgammel fortelling om noe dypt fellesmenneskelig. fata morgana er en sterk dokumentarfilm om menneskets trang til å bedre sine framtidsutsikter og finne ut hva som finnes på andre sida av havet eller bak fjellene i horisonten.

Many Europeans accept immigrants who flee from war and poverty. It seems more difficult to accept those who want to come to Europe to become like us. The documentary fata morgana examines the issues surrounding illegal immigration. We meet individuals with strong will-power, who follow their dreams, even to the point of putting their own lives at risk. The port in Tanger, Morocco is crawling with young men who want a better life in Europe. They dream of a European way of life. Many of these men hide in trucks in the harbor in order to get to Europe by sea.

The stories of these young Moroccans and the journeys they embark upon are as old as time itself. fata morgana is a powerful documentary about the human desire to achieve something better – to find out what lies beyond the far-off mountains or on the other side of the ocean.

Zaradasht Ahmed (f. 1968) er opprinnelig fra irakisk Kurdistan, kom til Norge som flyktning i 1995 og bor nå i Stavanger. Han har jobbet med film, tv og sceneproduksjoner, og har regissert musikkvideoer, kortfilmer og dokumentarfilmer.

Zaradasht Ahmed (b. 1968) from Iraqi Kurdistan came to Norway as a refugee in 1995. He now lives in Stavanger. He has worked in film, TV and stage productions, and directed music videos, shorts and documentaries.

Get ready for an evening of karaoke! tiff is proud to present suuri sävelparaati («the great musical parade») a Finnish musical classic featuring all the best singers of Finnish 1950s popular music. Unlike most musicals, the film lacks a plot as such: The frame story is a dress rehearsal of a concert. Each of the thirty-or-something songs – plus medleys and instrumentals – are sung by singers playing themselves, and presented by the fictious stagehand characters Repe and Eemeli.

suuri sävelparaati started a flood of hit song films in Finland. It offers a fascinating and humorous glimpse into Finnish popular culture at the time. This screening is a live karaoke session where everyone can join in. Whether you are a Finnish speaker and would like to sing along, a fan of the genre, or just curious, this is an opportunity not to be missed!

Jack Witikka ( 1916–2012) was a director for opera and theater, and from 1969 to 1980 he was head of the Finnish national theatre. He directed a number of films in the 1950s and 60s, including LITTLE PRESENTS, which was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 1961.

WINTER CINEmA

VELKOmmEN TIL uTEKINO!

Mørketida er perfekt for film, og under Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival skaper vintermørket og utekinoen på Stortorget en kinosal utenom det vanlige. Tradisjonen tro viser vi film for alle aldersgrupper, mandag til lørdag i festivaluka. Lørdag 14.30 blir det film for hele familien.

Klokka 09.00 viser vi kortfilmprogrammer for barn. Mandag til onsdag er filmene tilpasset barn i skolealder, mens filmene torsdag og fredag passer for barnehagebarn.

Klokka 16.00 viser vi film for publikum i alle aldre, blant annet kortfilm, musikkvideoer og snowboardfilm. Vi vil også vise noen filmprogram senere på kvelden.

WELCOmE TO THE WINTER CINEmA!

Tromsø International Film Festival keeps tradition and offers outdoor screenings to all audiences at Stortorget (the main square). Screenings take place every morning and afternoon from Monday to Friday during the festival framed by the January darkness and winter wonderland.

At 09:00, an extensive short film program for children is shown. The first three days, the programs are intended for children in primary and secondary school, while the Thursday and Friday programs are tailor-made for the youngest ones.

At 16:00, screenings include short film programs, music videos and snowboard films. We will also screen some programs in the evenings.

Catch a short in between ordinary festival screenings, or put on your parkas to watch the entire program (each Winter Cinema session lasts for 30 to 50 minutes).

Familiedag for alle

Samisk rap, lassokasting, kick off for TIFFs barnefilmfestival og HJERTERÅTT tv-drama under familiedagen på Stortorget.

Lørdag 19. januar er familiedagen på utekinoen under Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival. I år byr vi på en forsmak på tiffs barnefilmfestival «Verdens Beste», som arrangeres for første gang i månedsskiftet mai/juni. Med samisk kultur som ramme feirer vi også Tromsø-baserte Original Films tv-serie hjerterått fra NRK Super. SlinCraze, Sebastian Bangen (kjent som dash) og Agnete Båtnes Braaten framfører hjerterått-låta, og vi får møte skuespillerne Gard Emil Elvenes og Tuva Marie Høili Pettersen. Skuespiller Mikkel Gaup holder joikekurs.

Arrangementet begynner 14.00. Barn og voksne får også bli bedre kjent med samisk kultur: Man kan hilse på rein, prøve lassokasting, gahku (bålbrød), lære samiske ord og varme opp skoene sine med sennagress. Familiedagen er et samarbeid mellom Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival, Tromsø kommune, Verdens Beste – Barnefilmfestivalen i Tromsø, Original Film og Sάmi Giellaguovddάš/Samisk språksenter i Ullsfjord. Verdens Beste blir barnas egen filmfestival med internasjonal kvalitetsfilm, og arrangeres 30. mai-2. juni i Tromsø.

Saturday is family day at the Winter Cinema, this year with a kick off for tiff’s upcoming children’s film festival Verdens Beste (late May/early June). We will also screen a premiere of the 3rd episode of the TV-series hjerterått – set in a Sami environment.

Performances from artists SlinCraze, Sebastian Bangen/ dash and Agnete Båtnes Braaten, as well as actors Gard Emil Elvenes og Tuva Marie Høili Pettersen. The event includes a range of Sami activities for adults and children.

Screening starts at 15:00 and includes the animation film lavrasiid aigi by Anita Killis, as well as the hjerterått episode. Don’t miss it!

Gothenburg 1999: In a world without adults’ influence, the 15 year-old girl Mickan is struggling with the dilemmas of sex, love, friendship and prevailing hierarchies. Who backs up and who chickens out?

What is NUFF?

NUFF, or The Nordic Youth Film Festival, has been an international platform for countless young filmmakers since its beginning in 2003. In June every year, approximately 40 young filmmakers from all over the world gather in Tromsø to join NUFF workshops led by professionals, and to attend screenings. NUFF is based at the local film laboratory Filmhuset Tvibit, which helps develop young film talents in Northern Norway through NUFF and other programs.

gROWINg TALENTS: In January 2012 the project called Filmveksthuset Tvibit officially kicked off; this is the first major regional project with focus on developing the area of youth film. Filmveksthuset Tvibit is a center for youth film in Northern Norway, and provides coaching in film and film production.

SCREENINg AND RECEPTION: Friday January 18 at 13:00, NUFF hosts an open reception at Tvibit for young film makers, partners, international guests and festival audiences. After the reception, at 15:30, the award winning films from NUFF 2012 will screen at Aurora Kino Fokus 4 (for screening program, see the opposite page ).

TIFF WORKSHOP: At TIFF 2013, a group of young female filmmakers from Northern Norway and Palestine (both Gaza and the West Bank) will meet for a film workshop. In the course of one week, they will work on a short film «from idea to finished film», and the final result is presented at the TIFF closing ceremony. The workshop is organized by NUFF in cooperation with the Tvibit Gaza-project and SHASHAT, the Palestinian female filmmaker organization and festival based in Ramallah.

SCREENINg PALESTINE: During TIFF, three films from the SHASHAT festival will screen at Tvibit, and they are presented by the directors, who will be present at TIFF. The three films are: OUT OF FRAME (Palestine, 2012, 11 min, dir: Riham Al-Ghazalio), SEPARATION (Palestine, 2012, 9 min, Areej Abu Eid), and NOISE! (Palestine, 2012 7 min, dir: Alaa Desoki). SCREEN – CONNECTINg YOuTH: Through the Fredskorpset Youth Programme and Tvibit, young people from Northern Norway participate in a three month exchange program with partner organizations in South-Africa, Haiti and Kenya. Here they work together with young, local people, teaching them how to make film and doing film projects together. Some of the films made through Screen 2012 are screened at TIFF 2013, with the participants present.

CHILL OuT: During TIFF, the Tvibit café Pegen is a meeting place for young festival participants. Choose from the menu, or feel free to hang out without spending money.
