Spesialvisninger

A special screening is not like other screenings, to point out the obvious. This section offers a whole range of unique film experiences, like film concerts at Verdensteatret, singalong films at Driv, coastal movies in the 100-year-old fishing boat, Hermes II, and screenings for everybody at our outdoor Winter Cinema at Stortorget. Most of these screenings are also singular in the sense that they take place only once during the festival, so this might be the place to start planning your schedule.

Art and activism: The Fifth Wheel

Since the withdrawal of the allied troops, the artists of the all-women Simorgh Theater, repeatedly marginalized and persecuted, have been running from hiding place to hiding place. Acting underground, they deal with texts from Bertolt Brecht. Robert Schuster, the director of KULA Compagnie, has become a transmitter between these women and the international public. In April 2023, KULA Compagnie will show the performance “Underground Birds” at Hålogaland Teater.

After the screening, you are invited to a talk in Teaterkafeen.

Film Concert: Arsenal

Arsenal begins in the aftermath of the First World War, and we see war invalids, exhausted women and hungry children in a depopulated village. Farmers die trying to make a living on the barren land. Then we follow a strike where a soldier, the hero of the film, supports the Bolsheviks against Ukrainian nationalists. The film contains several iconic war scenes.

The style is clearly propagandistic, but the brutality we see shows the destructive power of war. The stylized images, almost still images, are heavy with symbolism. This is a propaganda film that moves beyond its limits. We meet talking horses and portraits that come to life. The film also highlights disagreements between Ukrainian nationalists and the Soviet Union's state power, which feels relevant even today in light of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

ABOUT THE MUSIC: To reinforce the raw war scenes, TIFF would like to present hard rock to the film, played by the Norwegian doomsday orchestra ATTAN. Guest musicians are Nikolai Olshansky (RU) and Boris Ionov (UA).

Film Concert: Burial

Is it possible to bury the immortal? Burial is a study of human’s extreme capabilities and innovative efforts, in an exploration of the paradox between our technological advances and increasingly complex relationships with nature. The film invites the audience to join an immersive sensorial trip into the unique and vast Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) in Lithuania, now undergoing a decommissioning process. Cold War-period energy structures still impact current geopolitical processes and impose lasting planetary threats.

Timo Kaukolampi (FI) is a Helsinki-based experimental music artist and self-taught composer, producer and meta band leader. His goal and ethos is to destroy and re-create his musical output with every new project and release. In 2018 he (with Tuomo Puranen) won the Jussi prize for best original soundtrack for the film Euthanizer by Teemu Nikki, which was also selected to represent Finland at the Academy Awards and screened at Tromsø International Film Festival that year.

Film Concert: City Girl

Times are hard for the farmers in Minnesota, and for the Tustines the margins are so small that their youngest daughter gets told off for making a bouquet out of a few wheat stems. Grains are not a toy, every last one counts! The farmer's son, Lem, is sent to Chicago to sell this year's crop, with a stern message to get a good price for it. In the big city, he meets Kate, a waitress, and they hit it off. Kate is dreaming of the idyllic, easy country life. The smitten pair marry each other, but the price of wheat keeps falling. How will things fare when they get back to the farm?

F. W. Murnau was a german director who made his last run of films in Hollywood. This is a seemingly uncomplicated rural tale in which a farmer falls in love with a city girl, but the themes go deeper than that. We are treated to beautiful pictures of endless wheat fields and a few glimpses of Chicago in the early 1930s, as well as good old conflicts and drama.

Live music by the skiffle-and-blues band The Dodge Brothers. Mike Hammond (guitars, lead vocals, banjo); Aly Hirji (guitars, mandolin, vocals); Mark Kermode (bass, harmonica, vocals), and Alex Hammond (washboard, snare drum, percussion)

Raging Bull

In this cinematic portrait, we come close to the boxer Jake LaMotta’s inner demons and his toxic masculinity, all shot in lyrical black and white. De Niro was himself key to getting LaMottas memoir to film, saying "I was interested in fighters. The way they walk, the weight thing – they always blow up."

Raging Bull might be the best film collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro. Here is the chance to see it on proper film, a 35mm print. This screening is a collaboration between TIFF and The Norwegian Federation of Film Societies (NFK). The roughly hundred Norwegian film societies are screening both classics and new films from around the world. Each year NFK selects a classic film and presents it to the audience in a bigger context – just like all film societies do before a screening.

Find your flow and join the sing-along!

The Monkey and the Mouth is an ambitious music film that mixes fiction and concert film. The musical parts are taken from three concerts in Oslo Spektrum in the spring of 2017. The spectacular concerts form the core of the film. It is a well-choreographed stage show that highlights the rap duo's charisma and professionalism. Director Thea Hvistendahl uses both the audience and the film's fictional framework to get the most out of the concerts. She has built a universe that is distinct and unlike anything you have seen in Norwegian films before.

If you're a fan of Karpe, join in!

Polyester

John Waters samler sitt brokete ensemble i trashklassikeren Polyester.

The life of Francine Fishpaw is about to unravel. The pious housewife's husband, Elmer, runs a hated porn cinema and is having an affair with his secretary Sandra, while her daughter Lu-Lu is out with the mob Bo-Bo. Her son Dexter is possibly the infamous foot fetishist "the Baltimore Foot-Stomper", and even her own mother is a sadistic parasite. Francine's only solace is the eccentric, nouveau riche ex-laundry maid Cuddles and large doses of alcohol. In all the misery, she shares the occasional long glance with the handsome, mysterious, and rich Todd Tomorrow. Does tomorrow smell better?

John Waters gathers his motley ensemble of actors in the trash classic Polyester. In typical Waters style, the core values and stereotypes of the American family are turned on their heads, perverted, and ridiculed with a twinkle in the eye and unpredictable oddities. But as with all good satire, a stench of truth comes through.

In collaboration with Tromsø film society, John Waters' crazy comedy is shown and smelled with accompanying Odorama scratch and sniff-cards.

No Bears

Khers nist

Jafar Panahi, who resides near the Turkish border, is directing his team to film an Iranian refugee couple in Turkey. They are trying to flee to France using fake passports. A village dispute ensnares Panahi. According to a rumor, Panahi accidentally snapped a photo of a forbidden relationship. His denial does not convince the villagers. Panahi's harmless artistic activities escalate the situation on both sides of the border, resulting in grave consequences.

Award-winning filmmaker Panahi is known for his neorealistic films. His films are restricted partly due to their depiction of the struggles of Iranian society. Upon participating in anti-government activities in 2010, he was convicted to six years in prison, barred from leaving the country, and banned from making films for two decades. Since then, he has made films in which he plays his role. No Bears is the latest attempt by the filmmaker to evade government restrictions while making films in Iran. The enforcement of Panahi's sentence led to his capture and imprisonment in Tehran in July 2022.

Azadeh M. Isaksen, PhD holder in Nordic literature and film adaptation from UiT The Arctic University of Norway, will give a brief introduction to the film.

ARCTIC PRIDE @ TIFF

TIFF is proud of this year's collaborations with Arctic Pride and Nordland College of Art and Film. Our queer program presents two feature film screenings (Joyland and Carol), a short film program followed by DJs and dancing at the DRIV Café.

KABELVÅG @ TIFF: QUEER SLOPES

We are celebrating that Nordland College of Art and Film has been incorporated into the University of Tromsø, after years of fighting for a stable existence. TIFF is proud to be collaborating with the film school on a yearly basis, and every year students and former students are screening films at TIFF. NKFS is situated in Kabelvåg and is a unique film school in the arctic region of Lofoten focusing on the broader understanding of the moving image. NKFS is an active part of the art and film environment in the Norwegian and Nordic contexts. This year, NKFS has invited former students Marin Håskjold and Hamid Waheed to curate a program for the ARCTIC PRIDE @TIFF called QUEER SLOPES: Where is the queer in a film? In the method of production, in the gaze, or in the narrative? In the filmmaker, in the viewer, or in the interaction between them? Nordland College of Art and Film presents a program including films from students and alumni of the school. The films thematize queerness in different ways, and not always within the same framework or understanding of the term queer.

SKEIV AFTEN/QUEER NIGHT

Together with Arctic Pride and Nordland College of Art and Film we are inviting you to end the evening with us on SKEIV AFTEN/ QUEER NIGHT at DRIV Café. Kabelvogue – a club for everybody is a DJ collective and club concept coming out of Kabelvåg will play and celebrate that Tromsø now has its very own film school!
