TORONTO — For many travel advisors, the biggest challenge isn’t finding clients or closing sales – it’s finding enough hours in the day. Between managing bookings, fielding emails, handling invoicing and keeping up with ever-changing supplier updates, even the most organized advisor can feel like they’re constantly racing the clock.
But there’s hope – with firm boundaries in place, says Geraldine Ree, author of the best-selling book Flying Colors: The Travel Advisor’s Guide to Breakthrough, who served as the keynote speaker at Uniglobe Travel (Canada)’s annual conference last month in Saint-Sauveur, Quebec.
Addressing travel advisors in the room, she asked: “What’s your biggest roadblock? Time, time, time – I’ve literally heard it 10,000 times before. What you’re all doing as solopreneurs and individual and corporate advisors, and the volume you put through, is intense and incredible. But it’s incredibly important that we help advisors figure out how to do all that better, in less time.”
Ree’s keynote explored strategies for prioritization and efficiency, especially as advisors juggle a growing volume of clients, supplier updates and digital tools. “We get to decide. We block our time. We have to put up boundaries, and we have to leave time for deep, important work to grow our business.”

Ree encouraged advisors to narrow their focus to their most valuable relationships. “We’re going to shift to fewer, better, bolder customers,” she said. “We’re going to be really clear on who our 250 to 500 clients are — the ones that know, like and trust us.”
She stressed that efficiency isn’t about cutting corners but about recognizing which clients and activities generate the greatest return. Advisors, she noted, can’t afford to spend hours on “tire kickers” or “flight-only” requests that seldom lead to profitable bookings.
“The only way we can do this better in less time,” Ree said, “is if we learn to say no to the ones that are never going to turn into our ideal people. This isn’t about saying no to good business. It’s about asking better questions.”
Ree challenged advisors to step away from busywork and focus on client connection. “Top performing advisors spend 75% of their time with customers — having conversations,
selling, exploring, servicing,” she said. “The rest would rather do the work. We often hide in the busy.”
For many advisors, that “busy” often includes invoicing, document management or back-office tasks that eat into selling time. Ree urged attendees to delegate, automate or outsource where possible — and to use artificial intelligence tools to handle repetitive work. “You can use AI to do the heavy lifting,” she said. “Your clients need you to look them in the eye and say, ‘How can I serve you? What destination are you yearning to go to?’”
For Shalene Dudley, owner of Latitude Concierge Travels in Oakville, Ontario, adopting the right technology has been key to saving time. “We are now using Tern as our CRM and it integrates many tasks and helps avoid simple errors,” she said. “ChatGPT Pro has been amazing for task management, sending communications and organizing social media.”
Dudley admits that while she sometimes feels overwhelmed –especially after returning from trips to find hundreds of unread emails – automation has helped her reclaim hours in her week. By integrating CRM functions and AI tools, her team now handles routine communications and administrative work more efficiently.
In Toronto, Lou-Anne Fradsham, owner and travel advisor, shared that delegation was essential as her agency grew. “I had to start delegating – since we are growing, I had to make some drastic changes,” she said. Fradsham hired a parttime social media specialist who now assists with onboarding new independent contractors and managing daily tasks. “She has been a godsend,” Fradsham added. “She’s now working on an onboarding program for new ICs, which will save a lot of time when I sign on new agents.”
After two years of research, Fradsham also introduced a new webbased accounting system in October. “The ICs are loving it – it saves them a lot of time. I love it also for how easy things are to change,” she said. “Now we are looking at some of the
AI programs to see what will work best for our agency.”
For advisors balancing client service and admin work, automation tools can be game changers. Carla Moore, a travel advisor with Envoyage in Halifax, said automation has made a major difference in her ability to manage details during busy seasons. “I rely on tools that automate reminders and help maintain clear communication across platforms,” she said. “Using Outlook and Travefy, I can set automatic alerts for upcoming payments, documentation deadlines and itinerary updates.”
These systems, Moore explained, reduce back-andforth communication by keeping clients informed and organized. “Travefy offers excellent timesaving features that streamline itinerary management and client updates, allowing me to focus more on delivering a personalized travel experience.”
In Vancouver, Jonathan Arden, an experienced travel manager and agency owner with Envoyage, said
IT’S ALL ABOUT FINDING WHAT SYSTEMS WORK BEST FOR YOUR OWN PROCESS
combining third-party apps with his GDS platform has transformed how he presents information to clients. “I use Trip Proposal, which formats flight, hotel and car options into a clear, easy-to-read layout,” he said. “I also use Travefy, which lets me build attractive, interactive quotes and itineraries while keeping communication organized in one place.”
Arden also uses Asana for task management. “It acts like a secondary calendar that keeps me on top of what needs to get done each day,” he said. “These tools have really helped streamline my workflow, but I think it’s all about finding what systems and apps work best for your own style and process.”
The overarching message from Ree’s keynote and the advisors’ experiences is clear: efficiency doesn’t come from working faster – it comes from working smarter. That means delegating non-core tasks and embracing technology that supports productivity to free up room for what advisors do best – engage one on one with their clients.
As Ree put it, “Your clients are starving for attention. They’re starving for you to care that they came back from their trip and where you’re going to go next.”

TORONTO — “My father taught me many, many years ago to never waste a good crisis.”
Taking that advice from Sandals founder Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart to heart, Sandals Resorts International’s Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart, says he and his team are planning ‘Sandals 2.0’ enhancements during extended closures for three of the company’s hardesthit Jamaica resorts in the wake of Hurricane Melissa.
The news came via a virtual Town Hall on Nov. 13, with Stewart fielding questions from UVI’s EVP, Sales & Industry Relations, Gary Sadler.
“I WANT TO SHARE THE FACTS WITH YOU”
Sandals and Beaches Resorts has always prioritized travel advisors, and that’s clear now more than ever.
“I’m a sixth generation Jamaican and Sandals was founded here by my father Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart in 1981. As you know, my father was the biggest believer in the travel advisor community, bar none,” Stewart told agents.
“I’m here in Jamaica, I’m broadcasting from my office in Jamaica, I’ve been on the front lines. I want to share the facts with you, because there’s so much information out there. I want to share with you
what’s going on on the ground here in Jamaica,” he said.
The outpouring of love for Jamaica from the travel advisor community and beyond has been overwhelming, he added.
More than 5,000 agents from Canada, the U.S. and beyond joined the broadcast, eager to find out how they can help Jamaica.
They also wanted post-Melissa updates on their favourite Sandals and Beaches properties on the island.
“I’VE
Earlier this month, Sandals announced that Sandals South Coast, Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals Montego Bay will remain closed until May 30, 2026.
They were the hardest hit when Melissa came ashore on Jamaica’s south coast on Oct. 28.
Sadler also noted that SRI’s Montego Bay call centre was destroyed.
The company’s other five Jamaica resorts – Sandals Dunn’s River, Sandals Royal Plantation, Sandals Ochi, Sandals Negril and Beaches Negril – are scheduled to reopen on Dec. 6.
The decision to temporarily close all eight resorts on the island was made “primarily to give our team members a chance to recover,” said Stewart. “A lot of Jamaicans have family members in different parts of the
island. We wanted to make sure they had time to recuperate, and for the company to support them.”
He noted that 100% of the team will stay on the payroll with pension and dental benefits in place, including employees working at the three most impacted resorts.
“I’ve personally been to every one of our hotels. Everyone is okay. The Jamaican spirit is unbelievable.”
Melissa first came ashore “with hurricane-force winds 10 miles wide,” he said. “Sandals South Coast was a pretty direct hit. It was about 3 miles off the centre of the eye.”
Two and a half weeks later, Stewart shared his assessment of the island’s ongoing recovery and progress.
“Kingston is literally perfectly fine. Port Antonio, literally perfectly fine. The town of Ocho Rios is 95% of what you would have seen 30 days ago, it’s been all cleaned up. At Sandals Dunns River and Sandals Ocho Rios, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, the resorts were literally completely intact.
“As we move further west, Falmouth got a direct hit, and Montego Bay too. Negril is virtually fine, just a few scratches here and there. Sandals Negril will be ready.”
The direct hit on Sandals South Coast, and “pretty substantial

damage” to Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Royal Caribbean, has necessitated the extended closure of those resorts, he added.
“We’ve made the decision to keep Sandals South Coast, Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals Montego Bay closed because they did get quite a bit of damage.
“At Sandals South Coast, it’s a fourstorey building in the main blocks, with a slab roof, and what they call a mansard roof. The mansard roof, the roof that you see, is more architectural. It’s not structural. That will be completely replaced. The hotel will be upgraded, we’ll Sandalize it, take it to the 2.0 level. And a few changes will be made within the resort. We also had damage to some of our air conditioning systems, and to the main kitchen,” he said.
Stewart added: “We just finished spending $25 million on Sandals Royal Caribbean’s overwater bungalows, and South Coast, they just came back into the inventory. The sub-structures are perfectly fine. The roofs are still on, 240 mph gust winds, and the roofs are still there. That’s testament to the Sandals Design Studio and how well they build. The interiors got damaged.
We’ll have to rebuild the interiors of those, and we will rebuild.
“For Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Royal Caribbean, stay tuned for more information but we’re going to take those to Sandals 2.0 too and we’re going to fix some of the things we’ve always wanted to do but never had the chance.”
He added: “Sandals Montego Bay will come back sexier than before. Sandals South Coast, the design team is at my place every night with new plans.”
“THEY ASK ME TO ASK YOU TO SEND THE BUSINESS BACK”
While impacted guests have many options – rebooking for later dates or opting for other Sandals or Beaches properties in the Caribbean – the company is very aware of the disruption to travel advisors and to many, many travellers’ Jamaica vacation plans.
“I want to apologize, and thank you for your patience, all of you, you and your customers, while we go through this period of necessity,” Stewart told agents. “I really apologize for any disruption we may have caused.”
He thanked SRI’s biggest source markets, including Canada, the U.S. and more, for their generosity to Jamaica as the island works to get back on its feet. “We owe such a debt of gratitude to the U.S., Canada, the UK, our neighbours here in the Caribbean, and Latin America. There are platoons of non-governmental organizations who are here to help,” he said.
“The spirit of Jamaica that you’ve seen over the years has never been more alive. The word that comes to mind constantly is ‘unity’.”
He also thanked the Jamaica government, and the media, and the cruise lines. “Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines gifted $1 million to Jamaica. So did Disney Cruise Line, and Carnival Corporation.”
Most of all, Stewart thanked travel advisors and the travel industry for donations in the wake of Melissa.
“I’ve seen the generosity. So many of you have contributed to The Sandals Foundation,” he said.
The Sandals Foundation has injected more than $5 million into Jamaica and deployed more than $1 million so far. “Heidi Clarke, the foundation’s executive director, and her team have literally not slept. And I want to remind everyone that 100% of every dollar gifted to the Sandals Foundation goes to the cause,” said Stewart.
“Many of our team members have lost everything, their homes, everything. And then there are thousands of others who were very lucky and had no damage at all.
“Every time I see them, they literally ask me to ask you to send the business back so we can reopen our resorts, which we will, on Dec. 6.”

MIAMI — Carnival Cruise Line has introduced “Partners in Paradise,” a new all-inclusive program designed to give travel advisors an in-depth look at the line’s upcoming exclusive destination, Celebration Key.
The program will offer select advisors the chance to experience the Bahamas-based destination firsthand while learning about Carnival’s latest products and ships and connecting with its sales leaders and Business Development Managers.
To be eligible, advisors must have completed at least five Carnival bookings in the past two years and 10 Learn and Earn courses. The program is open to residents of Canada (excluding Quebec).
“Partners in Paradise is more than an event. It’s a hands-on opportunity for travel advisors to see the full scope of what Carnival, and Celebration Key, offers their clients and their business,” said Janet Wygert, senior vice president of trade sales and marketing at Carnival Cruise Line. “Our goal is to provide experiences that inspire, educate and drive growth, helping advisors build stronger businesses while delivering unforgettable vacations to their clients.”

TripOppo and EVA Air recently teamed up for a fam tour to Vietnam that got high marks from 14 participating Canadian travel advisors. Starting in Ninh Binh, the trip included such highlights as an overnight cruise through Ha Long Bay, Hanoi’s famous Train Street, and a hands-on farming session and cooking class at Tra Que Vegetable Village.
The program includes threeday, two-night sessions running from Feb. 23 through March 1, 2026, and again from March 9 through March 15, 2026. Each $599 package includes roundtrip airfare from the participant’s home airport to Freeport, Bahamas, hotel accommodations, on-island transportation, and a voucher to sample Celebration Key’s food and beverage offerings.
Advisors will also take part in ship tours with an exclusive lunch, enjoy keepsakes from Celebration Key and Carnival’s Funnel Faves campaign, attend a hosted dinner with Carnival’s sales team, and take part in one-onone meetings aimed at helping grow their agency business.
The initiative builds on Carnival’s Funnel Faves campaign, which focuses on supporting travel advisors through rewards, training and marketing incentives. “Cuba is back!”: Travel advisors get all the updates at
BY KATHRYN FOLLIOTT
TORONTO — Cuba has long been a favourite from this market – and the destination is working hard to keep it that way with a renewed commitment to the Canadian travel industry, and Canadian travellers.
“Our goal is 1.1 million Canadians and I’m confident we’ll achieve it. Our commitment is absolute,” said Gihana Galindo, who recently took over the reins as the Cuba Tourist Board’s director in Toronto.
Speaking to travel advisors, suppliers and media at last week’s Cuba Unica Trade Appreciation Night at Illuminarium Toronto’s Distillery District, she added, “Cuba is back!”, to loud applause.
Galindo was joined by Cuba’s Minister of Tourism, Juan Carlos García Granda, as co-hosts of the event. Minister Garcia Granda spoke candidly about the destination’s challenges in recent years, especially the supply issues that plagued the 2024-2025 winter season.
“We saw a contraction of the market. It was a very difficult winter,” said the Minister.
Now, he said, “we have a strategy. The hotel companies created their own companies to bring in supplies.”
The establishment of the new foreign and domestic importing companies and new wholesale ‘Cash and Carry’ stores ensures efficient supply chains to maintain high service standards across all hotels.
With the new plan in place, and with plenty of support from tour operator partners in attendance last night for a mini-trade show, Cuba is ready to woo Canadians back. “We do believe 2025-2026 will be a good winter. We have a lot of expectations for this winter,” said Minister García Granda.
Cuba’s best year from Canada was 2015, with 1.3 million visitors.
As the top source market for Cuba, Canada gets its fair share of attention from the destination. FITCuba 2026, taking place in Varadero May 6 - 10, will be dedicated to Canada as the guest of honour.
“Canadians are our most valued clients and friends; many consider Cuba their second home,” said Minister García Granda. “We are dedicated to ensuring that every
visitor experience is exceptional, and that we continue to provide the quality service and unique offerings that keep our Canadian friends returning year after year.”
Galindo added that winter bookings are already up 25% compared to last year, “a result that highlights the dedication of our travel partners and travel advisors’ community.”
Cuba’s hotels and resorts, with 85,458 rooms, are ready for Canadians, and properties are in good shape despite a hit from Hurricane Melissa. Minister García Granda told Travelweek that Cuba evacuated 600,000 people ahead of the Cat. 4 storm last month, including 1,980 Canadians.
“After Melissa the beaches were cleaned up and everything is back to normal,” he added.
WestJet’s direct flights between Toronto-Havana start Dec. 18, 2025, and run through April 23, 2026 (Thursdays and Sundays).
Plus, direct Cienfuegos flights via WestJet/Sunwing Vacations start Dec. 10, and direct Cayo Largo del Sur flights via WestJet/Sunwing Vacations start Jan. 20.
On the hotel front, Cuba has welcomed several new international hotel management partners:
• Domina Hotels (Italy): Managing properties including Domina Marina Varadero and future openings in Havana
• Vila Galé Hotels (Portugal): Expanding management with three new properties: Vila Galé Cayo Santa Maria, Vila Galé Express Park View and Vila Galé Tropical Varadero

Winter in New York is never short on festivities. The Empire State Winter Games return to Lake Placid, while the Fire & Ice Festival in the Finger Lakes turns Geneva into a sparkling hub of ice sculptures, live music and local wine tastings.

In the Hudson Valley, Kingston’s Snowflake Festival fills the streets with artisan markets and carriage rides, and Saratoga’s Winter Fest brings live entertainment, sled races and cozy hot cocoa stations to its charming downtown.

Niagara Falls State Park glows with winter illuminations, while the Walkway Over the Hudson provides a crisp, scenic walk among snow-dusted sculptures and river views. Visitors can also explore winter birding in the Thousand Islands or snowshoe through Letchworth State Park.
New York’s small towns shine brightest in winter.

TORONTO — A number of Air Canada passengers impacted by the August 2025 strike are voicing their concerns about delayed refunds.
In response to those concerns, an Air Canada spokesperson told CityNews in a statement that the complexity of some of the refund claims means those cases are taking more time than others. The Air Canada spokesperson told CityNews the airline is processing some 1,400 requests per day, and gave an anticipated completion timeline for the end of November.
The three-day August 2025 strike caused travel chaos for the airline and for travellers and the travel industry.
At press time on Nov. 12, Air Canada’s Labour Disruption Claims online dashboard shows 98% claims processing progress and an anticipated finish line the week of Nov. 10. However, there’s an asterisk with this post: “More complex claims may require additional time.”
“Our claims process is improving as a result of Care team additions, streamlined procedures, and new digital tools,” says the airline. “Our back-end payment system was originally designed to issue refunds and basic compensation claims. However, expense reimbursement

cases are all unique and each must be handled carefully, which adds to the time it takes to reach a resolution. We want to be transparent about these challenges as we continue to work towards resolving each and every claim.”
Passengers who were booked on an Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge flight scheduled between Aug. 15–23, 2025, and whose flight was cancelled, and were unable to return home, are able submit “reasonable expenses, such as overnight accommodations and meals, for reimbursement. This is in addition to reimbursing other reasonable transportation costs under our flexible rebooking policy if we were unable to rebook you,” says Air Canada on its site.
WE WANT TO BE TRANSPARENT ABOUT THESE CHALLENGES AS WE CONTINUE TO WORK TOWARDS RESOLVING EACH AND EVERY CLAIM

The announcement comes amid record demand and sustained yearover-year growth, prompting the company to open bookings earlier than ever before.
Tauck’s two newest vessels – the ms Saudade, sister ship to the ms Andorinha on Portugal’s Douro River, and the ms Reverie, sister ship to the ms Serene on the Seine – will join the fleet as part of the company’s ongoing investment in small-ship luxury.
The company will also introduce a new six-day river cruise format designed to appeal to travellers seeking shorter yet immersive journeys. TORONTO — Martinique, affectionately known as ‘The Island of Flowers’, gave travel advisors from Toronto and the GTA a warm FrenchCaribbean welcome at a ‘Martinique Sensation’ industry event on Nov. 11.
Hosted by the Martinique Tourism Authority (MTA) at the Malaparte Event Space, this year’s Martinique Sensation brought together travel advisors, media, suppliers and more for a celebration of all things Martinique – just in time for the busy winter travel season.
“We are so pleased to be back in Ontario again, and though we needed a day or two to adjust to the weather, we were instantly warmed by the strong connection we enjoy with our Canadian friends and partners,” said Muriel Wiltord, Director, Americas of the Martinique Tourism Authority.
Wiltord added that the MTA is “continuing to build upon the momentum we established in-market earlier this year, and sharing the authentic, accessible Martinique experience that has resonated so strongly with Canadian travellers.”
Air Canada has teamed up with Canadian outfitter Tilley to launch the limited-edition Air Canada x Tilley Bucket List Hat, inspired by travel and exploration. Based on Tilley’s T1 Iconic model, the black hat features Air Canada’s maple leaf rondelle and a printed underside listing 90 Air Canada destinations. Handmade in Canada, it is available at Tilley stores and online for $109 while supplies last. The collaboration blends Air Canada’s global reach with Tilley’s craftsmanship as the airline continues expanding internationally. New routes this winter include Guatemala, Guadalajara, Rio and Peru, with Mallorca, Catania in Sicily and Budapest joining the network by summer 2026.
Air Canada will continue to offer direct flights out of Montreal (year round) and direct flights out of Toronto through the winter, supplementing the Dec. 7 debut of a new direct flight from Quebec City to Fort-de-France.
Meanwhile Martinique’s reputation as a lovely and welcoming cruise port continues to grow. Between 2024 and 2025, the destination welcomed over 465,000 cruise passengers. A recently completed cruise village features eight kiosks and tented spaces for local vendors. The MTA is eagerly anticipating MSC Opera’s maiden voyage out of Fort-de-France in winter 2026.
Safety, shared language and values, and modern infrastructure are some of the pillars of Martinique’s appeal to Canadians, who also prize the destination’s verdant volcanic landscape, lavish yet intimate properties, and UNESCO-recognized status as a Biosphere Reserve, said the MTA. Martinique’s deep history and gastronomic pedigree includes the distillation of the country’s signature rhum agricole.
The delegation at the event included representatives from Archipel Evasion, Avis, Club Med, Ecolodge Domaine de Puyfferat, Hotel Bambou, Hotel Panoramic, Karibea Hotel, La Savane des Esclaves, Natiyabel,
Tropical Tour, Village Creole, Kaouanne and Tangerine.
Travel advisors were invited to participate in one-on-one and group workshops with these Martinique hoteliers, spas and restaurants, ahead of a cocktail reception and prizes.
“Much like Canada, Martinique is a country of diverse languages, of diverse influences, and of course, diverse experiences,” said Karine RoyCamille, Deputy Director, Americas of the Martinique Promotion Bureau.
“We continue to deepen our longstanding commitment to this market not only because we already have so much in common, but because we see the potential to continue to grow together in exciting new ways in the future.”
