GENEVA — Sustainable travel is here to stay, and that has just about every destination in the world clamouring for year-round travel product. Many are on their way to achieving their year-round tourism goals.
Meanwhile a few forward-thinking countries have been developing and selling year-round getaways for decades, and reaping the rewards. One of the best? Switzerland.
Switzerland’s commitment to sustainable, year-round travel was in the spotlight for CATO’s exclusive Out-of-Country Summit. Following a record-breaking year of growth from the Canadian market, Switzerland Tourism (ST) partnered with CATO for the week-long summit earlier this month, welcoming CATO and ST execs, participating tour operators and more to this beautiful European country (see p. 6-7).
The Summit was centred around ST’s long-term market strategy, ‘Travel Better.’ The itinerary was designed to highlight the potential of off-peak and winter travel, with featured destinations including Interlaken, Lausanne and Geneva, and unique partner meetings taking place aboard the Panoramic train operated by MOB GoldenPass.
Switzerland has emerged as a top destination for Canadian travellers looking to extend the European

holiday season beyond the usual summer and early fall hotspots, as Oliver Weibel, Director Canada for Switzerland Tourism, told Travelweek during the CATO Summit trip.
“Our goal is to encourage travel in September, October, and November, and build toward a robust winter season, including the always-popular Christmas markets,” said Weibel. The shoulder season, long a strategic priority for the tourism board, is starting to resonate with the Canadian market thanks to shifting travel trends and increased airlift. Switzerland benefits from direct flights from Toronto and Montreal to Zurich and Geneva.
In 2025, overnight stays by Canadian travellers increased by 8.3%, outperforming growth from even the U.S. market, with much of the growth coming in the autumn months.
“The Canadian market continues to show a strong appetite for authentic and sustainable travel experiences, and this partnership with CATO reflects that trend,” said Weibel.
Autumn in Switzerland is a great time for culinary experiences, including wine tastings during harvest season and sampling local specialties at food festivals.
The season is also perfect for trail hiking even at high-altitudes, with well-maintained paths in areas like Graubünden and the Jungfrau region staying open.
Autumn also appeals to a rising segment in the Canadian market: travellers seeking slow travel and wellness. The Swiss Travel System makes it easy to explore by rail,
with panoramic routes like the Glacier Express.
“This is a place where you can really unplug,” says Weibel. “Everything works. It’s safe, it’s clean and we’re constantly working to offer sustainable options.”
Swiss winter meanwhile isn’t just for skiers – though that market remains strong with Canadian clients. It’s also for Christmas market lovers, wellness travellers and anyone looking for storybook holiday charm.
Skiers and snowboarders have their pick of hundreds of ski regions, including legendary names like Zermatt, St. Moritz, Davos and Verbier. Swiss resorts offer everything from Olympic-calibre terrain to family-friendly slopes, and most are easily accessible by train.
For Canadians accustomed to long airport transfers or driving in snow, the ease of Swiss transport is a big selling point. Many resorts also offer ski-and-stay packages, lift pass deals and lessons in English.
Meanwhile non-skiers can enjoy unwinding in a thermal spa, or scenic rail rides, like the recently launched Grand Train Tour of Switzerland –Winter Edition.
And of course, many Canadian travellers head to Europe for Christmas market experiences, and Switzerland stands out with a
more intimate, scenic take on the tradition (see sidebar).
At the heart of ST’s strategy is a push for improved travel distribution throughout the year, and longer visitor stays.
With national hotel occupancy currently at 49.4% annually, extending stays and spreading visitation across seasons are key targets.
Weibel said Switzerland is also putting a stronger emphasis on sustainable modes of transportation (train, tram, and public transit).
“Switzerland’s trains are how locals travel, and the system is woven seamlessly into the visitor journey,” says Weibel. “It only makes sense to showcase this essential part of our country while conducting business. Canadians love train travel, and the growth in rail sales clearly reflects that.”
Switzerland offers both ease and depth for Canadian clients.
“By emphasizing Switzerland’s beauty and unique experiences during the shoulder season, particularly in the autumn months, we can encourage Canadian travellers to explore Switzerland outside of peak tourist periods. Promoting the captivating fall foliage, cultural events, and outdoor activities during this most extraordinary times of year in Switzerland,” said Weibel. “There is something to discover every month of the year.”

Switzerland’s Christmas markets are a seasonal highlight, offering travellers the chance to experience the country’s festive spirit through regional traditions, food, and alpine settings.
Running from late November through December, these markets transform historic town squares and lakeside promenades into twinkling winter wonderlands.
For Canadian clients seeking a European holiday with postcard-perfect charm, here are some of the top Christmas markets worth building into an itinerary …
Montreux Noël
Set along Lake Geneva, Montreux Noël is one of Switzerland’s most scenic markets. Over 170 chalets line the lakeside promenade, selling local crafts and seasonal delicacies. A standout feature is Santa’s house, located at the summit of Rochers-de-Naye, accessible via cogwheel train.
Basel Christmas Market
Often ranked among the best in Europe, Basel’s market spans two main squares – Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz – featuring nearly 150 stalls. With a strong focus on artisan goods and gourmet food, it’s a favourite for travellers interested in both culture and cuisine.
Zurich Christmas Markets
Zurich boasts several markets, each with its own vibe. The Christkindlimarkt inside the main train station features a towering Swarovski crystal tree, while the Old Town’s Niederdorf quarter hosts one of the city’s oldest and most atmospheric markets.
Lucerne Christmas Markets
Lucerne’s Franziskanerplatz transforms into a charming holiday village, with rustic stalls, traditional Glühwein and live music. The city’s medieval architecture adds to the magic, making it a top pick for a classic Swiss holiday experience.
Bern’s Old Town Market
In Switzerland’s capital, the UNESCO-listed Old Town provides a striking setting for a smaller but authentic market. Local artisans and regional food producers create a warm, community-focused atmosphere that appeals to slower-paced travellers.

GENEVA — As the Canadian Association of Tour Operators (CATO) wrapped its 2025 Out-of-Country Summit in Switzerland, members left with more than scenic photos. They also gained firsthand knowledge of Swiss destinations poised for growth in the Canadian market.
With stops in Interlaken, Lausanne, Lavaux, Montreux and Geneva, the CATO itinerary was designed to highlight year-round product potential, foster partnerships, and encourage Canadian tour operators to expand beyond peakseason offerings.
“This has been a phenomenal trip,” said Brett Walker, GM, International Operations for Collette, and Chair of CATO. “Even though we’ve featured Switzerland in our programs before, I know so much more about the destination now. I’m excited to go back and talk with our team about what new opportunities might exist.”
The journey began in Interlaken, nestled between Lakes Thun and Brienz, and surrounded by the peaks of the Bernese Oberland. Delegates arrived in style aboard the scenic Luzern-Interlaken Express, a fitting start to a destination

that blends tradition with modern alpine experiences.
Daniel Sulzer, CEO of Interlaken Tourism, welcomed the group. “We are heavily investing in the winter season by shifting more focus from summer holidays to the all-yearround and winter activities Interlaken has to offer,” he said.
The region delivered on that promise with a wide array of experiences, from winter kayaking and lakeside wine tasting to raclette rafting and woodcarving in Brienz. High-alpine excursions to Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald-First and Schilthorn offered access to iconic Swiss summits, appealing to both adventure-seekers and leisure travellers.
CATO members also experienced the renowned Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa, a historic luxury property now part of the Michel Reybier Hospitality collection. “Nature lovers, food lovers, skiers, or spa-goers –everyone finds something here,” said Ralph Mehrabani, Regional Director of Sales. “And for Canadians looking to reconnect with nature, there’s no better place to start.”
The second half of the itinerary focused on the Lake Geneva region, with stops in Lausanne, Lavaux, Montreux and Geneva, each offering a distinctive Swiss experience, ideal for niche travel development.

In Lausanne, delegates explored the city’s Olympic legacy, lively cultural scene and lakeside setting. Highlights included a visit to the Olympic Museum and a preview of upcoming events marking the 50th anniversary of the Collection de l’Art Brut in 2026.
“Between the views, the transit, and the range of attractions, from museums to vineyards, it really stood out,” said Walker. “I definitely want to look at incorporating Lausanne more intentionally into our programs.”
Sébastien Marcelis of Lausanne Tourisme described it as a destination built for Canadians. “We are the Olympic Capital, but we’re also a cultural hub with easy access to both lake and mountain activities. It’s an ideal base for Canadian travellers who want variety without long travel times.”
The terraced vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcased the region’s deep wine heritage.
“It’s the kind of product that can really elevate shoulder-season travel,” said Walker. “Experiences
like these give us tools to build tours around interest, rather than just seasonality. That’s how we expand the travel period.”
Paula Briata, VP, Operations for WorldStrides and a CATO board member, added: “We already work with Switzerland, but this trip showed me how much more we can do, especially in places like Lavaux. There’s history, food, outdoor activity. It’s a win-win.”
The group also visited the Montreux Noël Christmas market, where Lake Geneva’s backdrop and festive alpine atmosphere demonstrated the appeal of Switzerland as a winter holiday destination.
In Geneva, the final stop, the group experienced the city’s balance of international gravitas and local character. Delegates took part in the opening of the Escalade Festival, toured the Old Town and attended a private reception at the Red Cross Museum.
“Geneva is the world’s smallest metropolis,” said Kristelle Charre of Geneva Tourism. “We’re home to the United Nations, but also surrounded by nature, with lake activities in the summer and access to ski retreats in the winter.”
The city’s reputation as a global hub, combined with efficient infrastructure, including free public transit for hotel guests, makes it a smart gateway for Canadian travellers. Its location and multilingual population also position it as an ideal base for broader European itineraries.
For CATO, the summit wasn’t just about product discovery, it was about industry collaboration. “This is an opportunity for competitors to come together and talk about shared challenges, like how we can promote different times of the year using common language,” said Walker. “It helps everyone, and it helps the destination.”
With more than 40 delegates representing Canada’s leading tour operators, the trip served as both a fact-finding mission and a strategic dialogue about how to grow outbound travel from Canada, especially during shoulder and off-peak seasons.
As Switzerland looks ahead to 2026 and beyond, the blend of alpine adventure, cultural depth and seamless accessibility across destinations like Interlaken and Lake Geneva is well aligned with evolving Canadian travel preferences.
“We learn from each other,” added Walker. “And ultimately, that helps us deliver more value to Canadian travellers.”

A tentative deal yielded big wage gains for Air Transat pilots, the culmination of nearly a year of bargaining and 10 straight days of intense negotiations that saw wages emerge as the main sticking point. The deal the pilots will vote on in the coming weeks includes a wage hike of more than 60% on average over five years. Bradley Small, who heads the union’s Air Transat contingent, said the deal puts his colleagues in the same ballpark as pilots at WestJet and Air Canada. “Before we were at the bottom of the barrel, and now we’re aligned with them,” said Small. Lufthansa Group has launched a new brand identity aimed at making the strength of the Group more visible. The Lufthansa Group is the fourth-largest airline group in the world in terms of revenue and fleet size. It operates five national airlines, other private travel-oriented airlines, Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa Technik, and over 300 subsidiaries and affiliated companies under one roof. For customers, service offerings will be bundled under the Group brand. “The Lufthansa Group is evolving from a group of airlines into an integrated airline group,” said Lufthansa Groupʻs CCO, Dieter Vranckx.

TICO has completed 17 of the 23 recommendations set forth by the AG in 2023. TICO is in the process of completing one of the 23 action items and next year will be implementing five remaining items. CEO Richard Smart says TICO has worked over the past two years to make its operations more efficient and effective. “We are committed to continuous improvement to ensure Ontario’s travel marketplace remains fair, safe and trusted,” said Smart. Key accomplishments include the launch of an enhanced public search directory, which provides compliance and enforcement info about all registrants.
Foreigners who are allowed to come to the U.S. without a visa could soon be required to submit information about their social media, email accounts and extensive family history to the DHS before being approved for travel. The notice refers to travellers from more than three dozen countries who take part in the Visa Waiver Program and submit their information to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which automatically screens them and then approves them for travel to the U.S. The public has 60 days to comment on the proposed changes before they go into effect.

“in good hands,” says Pierce, as Choquette gets ready to take the reins
TORONTO — Air Canada’s Lisa Pierce is passing the reins to François Choquette – but not before the airline had a chance to celebrate her close to 40 years of service, her many roles and accomplishments, and above all, her friendship and kindness to her team and to the travel industry.
“I’m leaving Global Sales in good hands,” said Pierce to applause at Air Canada’s Customer Appreciation holiday party in Toronto, ahead of her Dec. 31 retirement.
Choquette, currently Air Canada’s Managing Director, Revenue Management, has been appointed to the new position of Head of Sales. Choquette will take over Pierce’s sales responsibilities starting Jan. 1.
Pierce got her start with Air Canada as a Customer Service Manager at EWR in 1987, and steadily worked her way up. She became Sr. Director, USA Sales & Market Development in 2013, and then Managing Director, Canada & USA Sales in 2019, and then VP, Canada & USA Sales in 2020. Since 2023 she has served as VP, Global Sales & ACV.
Pierce reflected on her Air Canada career, and the airline
industry leaders she’s worked with along the way.
In the early years those leaders included Marc Rosenberg and Claude Morin. Pierce also gave a shout-out to Lucie Guillemette, who retired from Air Canada in April 2023. “Lucie’s commitment to practical, thoughtful leadership made a real impression on me,” she said.
Pierce also had high praise for John MacLeod, and for Zeina Gedeon, who served as ACV’s President and CEO from 2006 to 2012, and then came to Air Canada in Sales until 2014.
Pierce also worked with Duncan Bureau, Air Canada’s VP, Global Sales and Distribution from 20142018, and later President, Air Canada Rouge. Bureau passed away earlier this month at the age of 58. Pierce remembered Bureau’s humour, passion and commitment.
Air Canada’s Managing Director, Canada & USA Sales, Vincent Gauthier-Doré, has worked for Pierce for more than 10 years. “She’s been a mentor, a role model and one of the kindest people I’ve ever met,” he said.
Choquette, with 25+ years of airline industry experience, says he knows he has big shoes to fill. “She’s taken it up a notch,” he said of Pierce’s tenure.
Looking back on 2025, Choquette told Travelweek he was proud the airline got ahead of the Canadian market’s downturn in U.S. travel, and
acted quickly to mitigate the impact.
“We knew the demand [for U.S. destinations] would be down, and we redeployed,” he said.
How is transborder travel doing now? Choquette said the numbers on transborder routes are still down by the teens. “It’s plateaued,” he said. “The U.S. has always been a very natural destination for Canadians, and it continues to be. Places like Orlando, those routes are still very healthy.”
The move has broadened other markets for the carrier. “Our Mediterranean flights used to end at the end of September. Now they go all the way through. We’re seeing huge demand for places like Portugal and Spain well into November.” Other buzzy destinations for Air Canada these days are Rio de Janeiro, and Budapest.
By summer 2026 Air Canada will be the second largest North America carrier in transatlantic capacity. The largest? Air Canada’s Star Alliance partner United Airlines.
“Travel agencies’ development is our development,” said Choquette, adding that Air Canada’s new routes will truly take off with agents’ help. “We need travel agents to ask their clients, ‘Have you thought about Brazil?’, and let them know how to get there with Air Canada, and how they can vacation there safely with no concerns.”
Even with all the tech these days – specifically, AI, of course – travel advisors are still hugely important, he added. “Researching and booking travel is still an emotional thing for people,” he said. “The expectations are so high. The travel advisor community is very important to us. We need a healthy distribution landscape.”

MEXICO CITY — Mexico saw strong international momentum in 2025, welcoming 16.5 million visitors by air from January to October, according to new figures released by Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora.
The updated data, sourced from the Ministry of the Interior’s Migration Policy Unit, shows Mexico registered 16,571,000 international air arrivals in the first 10 months of the year, nearly 100,000 more than the same period in 2024 and 10.2% higher than 2019 levels. Travellers from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom led overall arrivals.
“These results confirm that Mexico is a reliable destination for the millions of people who visit us each year,” Rodríguez Zamora said. “Families, young travellers and older adults continue to come because they find in our country a destination full of hospitality, infrastructure and experiences that inspire peace of mind and enjoyment.”
The United States remained Mexico’s top source market, contributing 11.157 million visitors between January
and October. This was 62,000 more than in 2024 and 26.7% higher than in 2019.
Canada delivered another strong year with 2,079,000 visitors, representing 11.4% growth over last year and an 18.1% increase over pre-pandemic travel. The United Kingdom followed with 372,061 visitors, up 3.2% year over year.
Travel to Mexico also grew from several overseas markets outside North America and the U.K.
Rodríguez Zamora noted that the country’s tourism performance is supported by strong policy efforts to broaden Mexico’s global appeal and drive continued growth. “We will continue strengthening policies that support the arrival of more tourists to destinations across the country, because Mexico has it all:
A group of lucky travel advisors recently returned from a fam trip to Türkiye, where they spent nine days experiencing Collette’s ‘Treasures of Türkiye’ itinerary. Collette says the fam is part of its ongoing commitment to support the trade.
landscapes, diverse activities and enormous potential for growth,” she said. “Tourism is a powerful tool to create opportunities, identity and shared prosperity.”
Travellers represented a wide range of demographics, underscoring Mexico’s cross- market appeal. Visitors aged 30-44 made up the largest segment at 29.2%, followed by travellers aged 45-59 at 24%. Those 60 and older accounted for 16.9%, while travellers aged 16-29 represented 18.4%. Children and adolescents comprised 11.5% of total arrivals. “The diversity of visitor profiles confirms that Mexico remains an attractive option for family travel, as well as for those seeking cultural, nature-based, leisure or adventure experiences,” said Rodríguez Zamora.

SANDALS DUNN’S RIVER — Sandals Resorts International’s Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart, has nothing but the highest praise for Canadian agents, and the Canadian travel industry.
What does Adam Stewart think about Canadian travel advisors?
“Just phenomenal,” he said with a smile.
Travelweek talked with Stewart during Sandals Resorts’ #BacktoJamaica FAM, with a focus on everything on restoration work on Sandals Montego Bay, Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals South Coast, to forward bookings for other resorts on the island, and more.
“Canadian travel advisors have always shown up for us. The love has always been there,” said Stewart.
“The relationship is deep and trusting.”
Sandals Dunn’s River reopened Dec. 6 with 80% occupancy, “and by Wednesday this hotel will be 90% full,” Stewart told Travelweek.
Even better, he said, “80% of clients booked here for Dec. 6 onwards have kept their reservations here. It shows the belief in the brand.”
The story is similar at the other four recently reopened resorts: Sandals Royal Plantation, Sandals Ochi, Sandals Negril and Beaches Negril.

The FAM’s hashtag, #BacktoJamaica, says it all. “It’s about getting the message out that Jamaica is in great shape,” said Stewart. “But we won’t put out product prematurely.”
SRI’s other three resorts on Jamaica – Sandals Montego Bay, Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals South Coast – will reopen on May 30, 2026.
As Stewart put it, Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Royal Caribbean “will get deep makeovers.” The company will invest US$150 million to transform these two resorts to Sandals 2.0.
Meanwhile at Sandals South Coast, “every piece of the hotel will be new,” said Stewart. New swimming pools –“magical”, in Stewart’s words – will be similar to the pools at Sandals St. Vincent. Sandals South Coast will also get four new restaurant concepts. “We’re going to give you the best product you’ve ever seen,” he said.
“WE
More than 260 travel advisors – including a small but mighty delegation from Canada – taking part
in the #BacktoJamaica FAM heard updates from JTB Director Donovan White and many more, plus Jeffery Clarke, CEO, Unique Vacations Inc., at a Town Hall that also included a Q&A with Stewart and UVI’s Gary Sadler.
White said Jamaica is at 80% power restoration, and 80% water restoration.
Some 55% of Jamaica’s hotel room inventory is currently open for business. By the end of December, that number will climb to 68%, and by the end of January, it will hit 80%.
“We have worked unrelentingly,” said White. “What we want now is business, and we are ready to do what we do best: serve your customers and your clients.”
UVI’s CEO Clarke offered a heartfelt apology from the Sandals team for very long hold times agents and clients experienced when they reached out to the Montego Baybased call centre with questions about bookings. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, some 27,000 of Sandals Resorts’ bookings were moved.
The thing was, the MoBay call centre lost its roof in the storm. It also had no power. “Normally we answer 80% of our calls within 20 seconds,” said Clarke. “Right after the storm we answered a lot of calls in four hours and 20 seconds. And for that we apologize. That is not what we wanted.”
Stewart said Sandals Resorts is taking the lead in getting tourism back to Jamaica, “because that’s what we do. It’s our home and we’re going to build it back. We’re going to be OK. You have my commitment. Forgive my passion. But I love Jamaica.”

TORONTO — Porter Airlines is facing potential labour disruption in the new year after its flight dispatchers voted unanimously in favour of strike action.
The Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association (CALDA) confirmed that 100% of participating members supported the strike mandate, citing more than 14 months of negotiations that have not produced a fair first collective agreement.
Porter’s flight dispatchers joined CALDA in August 2024 seeking a contract that recognizes their critical role in operations.
The union also raised concerns about Porter’s preparations in the event of a strike.
Negotiations are currently in the final phase of Conciliation with assistance from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
MIAMI — A new status-match program from Virgin Voyages extends instant status recognition to an estimated 50 million elite travellers across more than 35 airlines, hotel and cruise loyalty programs.
The cruise line says it’s the most expansive status match program in the history of the travel industry.
In the cruise line’s words, “Virgin Voyages has a simple message for travellers who love to get out and explore the world: if you’ve stayed loyal to brands that promised to reward wanderlust but feel like you aren’t being valued as much as you used to, jump onboard Virgin Voyages because they’re ready to show you what it feels like when a brand loves you back.”
The cruise line cites recent data showing that 83% of consumers feel undervalued by the brands they remain loyal to (Emarsys, January 2025).
“Loyalty programs have gotten it backward,” says Virgin Voyages’ CEO, Nirmal Saverimuttu. “They ask for more, give less and call it a reward. We’re flipping that. From the moment Sailors step aboard, we want them to feel recognized, relaxed and reminded of why they fell in love with travel in the first place.”
Eligible Programs: Virgin Voyages is recognizing loyalty members from across the Virgin family, extending Blue Extras hospitality to eligible members of Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club and Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer. Virgin Voyages’ enhanced Status Match is also eligible across 35+ travel programs including
Air Canada’s Aeroplan, American Airlines’ AAdvantage, United MileagePlus Program, Delta SkyMiles, Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt, IHG One Rewards, Sandals Resorts and 12 cruise lines too.
Matching Window: Travellers can apply for Virgin Voyages’ Status Match now through Jan. 16, 2026 and book a voyage by March 31, 2026 to take advantage of the cruise line’s ‘Blue Extras’ perks.
Sailings available: Now through summer 2027, with departures from Miami, San Juan, New York, Barcelona, Athens, L.A. and Seattle to the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Alaska and beyond.
What ‘Blue Extras’ Unlocks: Premium coffees at The Grounds Club, complimentary laundry service, exclusive cocktail events and personalized Sailor Services support from embarkation to disembarkation. Also, access to special deals and entry into Virgin Voyages’ global rewards program benefits.
Saverimuttu’s message to travellers: “You earned your status. You put in the flights, the nights, the spend. Other programs responded by taking more and giving less. We’re responding by opening our doors and saying: we see you, we appreciate you, come sail with us.”
Virgin’s adults-only cruise line is resonating with travellers, says Stephen Hopkins, VP, Growth. “Kidfree travel is no longer a niche, it’s a movement. Virgin Voyages has become the go-to brand for adults traveling without children, and the numbers prove it. Demand for adultsonly luxury travel has climbed 47% since 2022, and market experts project the segment will double over the next decade.”

CALGARY — WestJet’s new reciprocal codeshare partnership with SAS gives travellers on both sides of the Atlantic enhanced access to a broader network of destinations.
Passengers travelling from YYC on WestJet’s nonstop transatlantic flights to Paris and London Heathrow, can now easily connect to some of SAS’ most popular destinations for a journey booked on one ticket. Passengers also benefit from a seamless single connection, baggage transfers and the ability to earn WestJet Rewards on any WestJet marketed itinerary with SAS.
“Deepening our commercial connection with SAS means more seamless connections for guests on both sides of the ocean. With more Canadians wanting to explore Northern Europe, we are proud to help them get there with ease, so they can focus on the destination,” said John Weatherill, WestJet EVP and Chief Commercial Officer.
Paul Verhagen, EVP and Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, said: “The expanded codeshare partnership with WestJet is an important
step in connecting Scandinavia even more closely with Canada. It strengthens our main base in Copenhagen and gives travellers on both sides of the Atlantic more options and a smoother overall journey. This agreement broadens our joint offering and creates new opportunities for customers across our combined networks.”
WestJet passengers can now get streamlined access to Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm on a year-round basis via WestJet’s nonstop CalgaryParis and Calgary-Heathrow offerings.
In 2026, WestJet guests will get connectivity to these destinations from other transatlantic cities including Edinburgh, Dublin, Barcelona, Rome and Keflavik, allowing one-stop connectivity from WestJet’s other Canadian gateways to Europe.
WestJet’s code will also be placed on SAS’ year-round direct service between Toronto and Copenhagen.
The partnership expansion also opens options for Europe-based passengers looking to access the best of Canada via YYZ as well as via SAS’ U.S. gateways including Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington-D.C., New York JFK and Boston.
SAS code will be placed on WestJet operated flights beyond their Copenhagen-Toronto service and U.S. gateways to more than 10 Canadian destinations from coast-tocoast-to-coast including Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Halifax and more.
Last month WestJet announced seasonal nonstop four-time weekly service between Halifax and Copenhagen, connecting the two cities for the first time beginning in May 2026.

Luxury air travel is evolving. What was once defined by seat width and fine dining now extends to how travellers experience time, space and connection. Today’s premium passengers value well-being and authenticity as much as comfort, and airlines are responding by creating journeys that feel more personal and purposeful.
Turkish Airlines has become one of the leading carriers shaping that shift. Renowned for its extensive global network and refined service, the airline has built a reputation for blending thoughtful design with cultural depth, particularly in its award-winning Business Class.
On board, comfort meets attention to detail. Seats convert into lie-flat beds, screens are large and easy to use, and service is attentive without being overbearing. Dining is a highlight, with menus developed in collaboration with Turkish Do&Co and brought to life by “flying chefs.” Courses draw on both international favourites and regional flavours, giving passengers a taste of Türkiye alongside global classes. The result is a dining experience that feels curated rather than routine.
For many travellers, Istanbul itself is an integral part of the journey. Turkish Airlines’ lounges at Istanbul Airport have become destinations in their own right. Both the

Business Lounge and Miles&Smiles Lounge feature private suites, showers and family areas, along with unexpected touches such as golf simulators. Gourmet food stations, local delicacies and barista-made coffee further elevate the experience, encouraging travellers to relax, work and unwind in comfort before their flight.
Flexibility is also central to the airline’s premium approach. Through the Stopover in Istanbul program, passengers can turn a connection into a short city stay. The program includes complimentary hotel nights, allowing travellers to experience Istanbul’s culture and hospitality between flights. Economy Class passengers receive two complimentary nights in a four-star hotel, while Business Class passengers enjoy three nights in a five-star property.
What sets Turkish Airlines apart is the integration of all these elements. Luxury here is not about exclusivity but about seamless care, cultural richness and the sense of being looked after at every stage of the journey. For Canadians travelling to Europe, Asia, Africa or beyond, Turkish Airlines offers more than a flight – it offers a reminder that the journey itself can be as meaningful as the destination.

TORONTO — Sunwing Vacations is working hard to make sure travellers and the trade have Jamaica vacation destinations on their radar for winter 2025-2026.
As the island continues its recovery from Hurricane Melissa’s Oct. 28 hit, many top getaway spots including Negril and Ocho Rios are ready to welcome travellers with open arms.
And Sunwing Vacations is there to help.
The tour operator has created a dedicated ‘Jamaica Together’ page on Sunwing.ca (sunwing.ca/en/ jamaica-together) that provides travel advisors and customers information on which resorts are open and ready to travel to.
The site is full of info, recent resort photos and more.
“This helps to reduce the guesswork and ensures advisors can book their customers with confidence,” Eric Rodriguez, EVP, Sunwing Vacations Group, told Travelweek.
“We’ve created a ‘Verified Jamaica’ collection of resorts that have been visited and inspected recently by our product team. This included confirming resort operations (clean accommodations, dining service, attentive staff), amenities (pools, beach areas, rooms) and experiences (easy transfers, safe roads),” he added.
“The resorts that have been verified have a dedicated stamp to indicate for travel advisors and customers which properties have been visited.”
The complete list of verified hotels is available through the Sunwing Travel Agent Portal.
It can be challenging for tour operators, airlines, tourism boards and more to promote the regions of a hurricane-hit destination that are ready for visitors, while still supporting the harder-hit areas.
As Rodriguez told Travelweek: “We’re focusing on specific hotel operational readiness, regardless of location. We’re working closely with the Jamaica Tourist Board as well as the resort partners to understand their timeline for when they will be ready to welcome guests.”
Travelweek asked Rodriguez what percentage of Jamaica resorts normally available through Sunwing Vacations are currently accepting travellers.
“Currently, approximately 30% of resorts have already reopened, with over 60% expected to be operational by mid-December,” he said. “Our WestJet flight operations are back to normal, as are the options to book a Jamaica package and NexusTours excursions in Jamaica.”
Rodriguez added that many of Sunwing Vacations’ partners “are doing everything they can” to open as soon as they can while still ensuring a safe and positive experience for customers arriving to Jamaica. He noted that some of the RIU Hotels & Resorts properties in Jamaica were among the first to re-open their doors with 100% of their facilities soon after Hurricane Melissa passed. RIU committed US$1 million to help their employees build their homes back.
“We are working together to bring back Canadians to Jamaica!” added Rodriguez.
Sunwing Vacations, and the WestJet Group, have long been dedicated partners to Jamaica tourism.
In its efforts to help the island postMelissa, the Sunwing Vacations Group and WestJet Group implemented several initiatives in November and will continue to support Jamaica.
Immediately after the hurricane passed, Sunwing Vacations Group & WestJet Group employees partnered with GlobalMedic to pack aid boxes. WestJet then provided cargo space and flights for the GlobalMedic volunteers delivering aid to the affected areas. Another packing event is planned for this month with GlobalMedic.
Vacation Express by Sunwing has also already raised over $30,000 for recovery efforts in Jamaica.
Through mid-December, Sunwing Vacations also donated $100 per couple for every all-inclusive package booked to Jamaica, plus NexusTours donated $40 for each Jamaican excursion booked. Proceeds from the company’s employee holiday parties are also being donated to Jamaica recovery efforts.
These combined funds go directly to GlobalMedic for more essential supplies to be sent to Jamaica.

NASSAU — Air Canada’s new nonstop flights from Halifax and Ottawa to Nassau have taken flight.
According to the tourism board, Ottawa travel to The Bahamas is up 54% year-over-year, and Nova Scotia has increased 85%.
“The Bahamas continues to strengthen its position as a favourite destination for Canadians, and expanding airlift is essential to keeping pace with this growing demand,” said I. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister of The Bahamas. “These new flights deepen our connection in Canada and make it even easier for visitors to enjoy the natural beauty, culture, and warm hospitality that define The Islands of The Bahamas.”
Alexandre Lefevre, VP Network Planning at Air Canada, said: “We’re thrilled to launch nonstop service from Nassau to Ottawa and Halifax, further connecting Canada with one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations.”
The new routes complement existing airlift to The Bahamas from across Canada.
Air Canada’s scheduled service to Nassau includes, from Toronto, 6-7 flights per week (seasonal variations); from Montreal, 3-4 flights per week (seasonal variations); from Ottawa, new weekly Friday flights; and from Halifax, new weekly Friday flights.
Right now The Bahamas is gearing up for the holiday season. A series of celebrations bring the islands’ culture to life, from sparkling street décor to island’s signature Junkanoo and can’t-miss New Year’s events.

‘Clear Horizons’ ahead as
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
PUNTA CANA — Confidant Connect
Live returned for its sixth year with a renewed sense of purpose, as Hyatt Inclusive Collection welcomed the top 100 producing travel advisors –including 25 Canadians – to Secrets Tides Punta Cana.
This year’s conference centred on the theme ‘Clear Horizons,’ an idea inspired by a “watershed” moment following a hugely successful fifth edition in 2024.
“After last year’s wrap-up, we all said, What now? How do we move forward?” said Mark Benson, Associate Vice President of Sales and Strategy for Hyatt Inclusive Collection. “But as we planned for this year’s conference, my mind kept coming back to the same feeling –there’s so much happening, so much ahead of us. It’s a ‘clear horizon’ – full of possibility and potential.”
Several resort openings in 2025 offered advisors and their clients a world of new possibilities to sell and seek elevated experiences.
These include Secrets St. Lucia and Secrets Baby Beach Aruba in June, Secrets Playa Esmeralda in August and Dreams Playa Esmeralda, which followed shortly after in September. Up next is the highly anticipated opening of Hyatt Vivid Punta Cana in 2026, the first Vivid property in the D.R.
All this new product coming online helped make Canada one of the standout markets for Hyatt’s Inclusive Collection this year, with overall initiatives up 85% and in-person travel advisor engagement rising more than 80%.
Carolina Bellina, Senior Director of Canada Sales, told Travelweek that Canada’s strong momentum is expected to continue in 2026 despite geopolitical pressures. She notes that shifting traveller preferences away from U.S. destinations, increased demand for more meaningful connections, along with expanded airlift to hubs like Cancun and Punta Cana, are all contributing to sustained growth.
“With more than 1,400 hotels around the world, Hyatt is focused on understanding what travellers need and what they’re looking for in order to stay competitive,” said Bellina.
A core pillar of Confidant Connect Live has always been its ability to build loyalty, strengthen relationships and reinforce the partnership between Hyatt Inclusive Collection and the advisors who drive its success.
Bellina said advisors consistently tell the company how important these gatherings are – not only for feeling appreciated, but for understanding the brand more deeply. “The feedback we receive from advisors is incredibly important because they tell us what trends they’re seeing, what we’re doing well and what we should adjust,” she said. “They also get to learn about the back-end work they don’t normally see, like branding and details they weren’t aware of. And the opportunity to spend time with our leadership – that’s huge.”
Benson told Travelweek that Confidant Connect Live was built with a clear purpose from the start. “When we launched this in 2020 –on a wing and a prayer, given the year – we set out to make it the hot ticket, something advisors had to work for. Now, it has become that hot ticket,” he said.
Of the 100 in attendance this year, Benson notes that about 70% of honourees had never attended a Confidant Connect Live before, while only two advisors have been to all six editions.
And to those who didn’t make the cut this year but hoping to attend in the future, Bellina offered this advice: “Advisors need to register their bookings in Confidant Collective because that’s how we track production. As soon as you make a booking, register it. Don’t wait, because you might miss the 30-day window and lose the opportunity.”
CANCUN — RIU Hotels & Resorts has expanded its footprint in Cancun with the opening of the Riu Ventura, a 705-room property located beside Playa Delfines in the city’s hotel zone.
The new build marks RIU’s sixth hotel in Cancun and brings the chain’s total to 15 in Quintana Roo and 23 across Mexico.
The Riu Ventura introduces several firsts for the company in Mexico, including an adults-only pool and Sky Bar on the sixth floor and a collection of 36 rooms with private swim-up pools on the first floor. The swim-up category, designed to offer improved privacy and views, has not previously been available at any RIU resort in the country.
The resort’s design emphasizes flexibility for both families and adults. There are six bars in total, including the vibrant Sky Bar on the sixth floor featuring an adults-only pool with panoramic views. Groundlevel amenities include four outdoor pools and a family-friendly water play zone. Plus, a full entertainment program is available day and night, complemented by supervised activities for younger guests at the Riu Land kids club.
Dining is also a major focal point of the new resort, with a broad range of international options. Guests can choose from Asian cuisine at Kaori, Mexican dishes at Agave, Italian classics at Rimini, and fusion selections at Kulinarium. A steakhouse rounds out the à la carte selection. The resort’s main buffet features live cooking stations alongside two casual snack venues:
Pepe’s Food for grilled favourites and Tiki Tako for Mexican tacos. The sports bar introduces RIU’s new American-country concept, offering à la carte comfort food along with 24hour drinks and snacks.
The Riu Ventura also grants access to RIU Party, the themed entertainment program hosted at the nearby Riu Caribe. The series includes the White Party, Jungle Party, Pink Party and Neon Party, four weekly themed events that regularly draw large crowds and deliver a lively atmosphere.
Wellness and fitness round out the resort’s offerings. Guests can work out in the gym or unwind at Renova Spa, which features a full menu of treatments and massages.
The company says the new opening reinforces its long-term commitment to Mexico, where it employs more than 12,600 people. RIU will continue its investment in 2026 with renovations planned for Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun and Hotel Riu Palace México in Playa del Carmen, followed by the construction of the new Hotel Riu Palace Quintana Roo in Costa Mujeres.
TORONTO — Independent travel advisors from across Canada came together for Onvigo’s second annual Advisor Gala, a virtual event that highlighted a year of growth, community engagement and achievements.
With the theme ‘TWO-GETHER’, the celebration underscored Onvigo’s core message that when advisors move forward, the entire community
follows. The company reinforced that Agents First is “not a tagline. It’s our foundation,” as the evening recognized the contributions of advisors whose efforts are helping to shape the host agency’s future.
A highlight of the night was the 2025 Advisor Awards, honouring advisors who turned “intention into action and action into results.” Award recipients included: Top Cruise Advisor: Satapon Wirojwong; Top Guided Tour Advisor: Sandra Ettore; Top Sun Advisor: Tina Johnston; Most Supportive ITA: Carrie Vercillo; Professional Development Achiever: Lisa Watson; Up and Comer ITA: Marlene Henderson; Community Superstar: Taryn Day; and Marketing Superstar: Abdus Sadeque.
Additional recognitions included top sales achievers and most improved performers.
In a message to advisors, Shean Carmichael, Director of Host Agency Operations, said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish, and our community deserves more than wishes. Advisors who step into 2026 with clarity and a solid strategy will create the momentum that moves the whole network forward. Community creates confidence, and confidence fuels results.”
Looking ahead to 2026, Onvigo plans to expand its Partnership Program to strengthen relationships with suppliers and increase access to education, opportunities and practical tools. The goal is to support independent advisors with resources that help boost conversions and deepen client trust.
The gala closed with a reaffirmation of what Onvigo describes as a shared truth: “Independent does not mean alone.”
