A PACIFIC OASIS

From oceanfront suites to an 18-hole golf course, Dreams Estrella del Mar Mazatlán redefines coastal luxury in Mexico’s reborn ‘Pearl of the Pacific’

Stepping out of my transport into the openair lobby of Dreams Estrella del Mar Mazatlán Golf & Spa Resort, the bright blue of the ocean captures my attention, followed by the loud crash of the waves. From the upper level deck, the beach resort is in full display: a shoreline of six kilometres of pristine soft sand, multiple swimming pools, water slides and eight dining options.

Located a half hour from historic Old Mazatlán in Mexico, this 358-suite beach resort is its own oasis, nestled within the gated community of Estrella del Mar, just 15 minutes from the international airport. Guests are greeted with a chilled beverage and escorted to the check-in lounge, where the warm hospitality of the resort staff immediately encourages new arrivals to check the box for vacation mode. From November to April, Mazatlán’s dry season offers idyllic temperatures and endless sunshine.

A former fishing village (and self-proclaimed shrimp capital of the world), Mazatlán – known as the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’ – flourished in postWorld War II during the jet age, with Hollywood elites like Rita Hayworth, John Wayne and Walt Disney leading the way for vacationers in search of fun and sun on the Pacific coast. Mazatlán’s Olas Altas beach promenade and historic architecture charmed travellers, who enjoyed steady yearround temperatures and sport fishing that occurred offshore at the confluence of the Sea of Cortes and the Pacific Ocean. Tourism development in Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Cabo San Lucas lured travellers to other regions of Mexico.

Years later, Mazatlán is experiencing a revival, with new hotel developments from InterContinental, Wyndham and Fiesta Americana on the horizon. The upcoming MZT Aerospace Park – home to Latin America’s first industrial park with a private airport – is set to attract a new generation of visitors, complementing the city’s annual Carnival, one of the world’s largest and a tradition dating back to the 1800s.

THE SUITE LIFE

Exploring all-inclusive Dreams Estrella del Mar is easy. There are no wristbands – guests have access to eight dining options, five bars and endless amenities. The four accommodation buildings surround the pool and activity areas, which are located on the lower level adjacent to the beach. There are stairs and elevators to make accessibility seamless between levels.

All Dreams Estrella del Mar suites include oceanfront views. There are four suite categories, eight suite categories for Preferred Club members and the king-bedroom Presidential Suite, a worthy indulgence for a honeymoon or anniversary celebration. Located in the adults-only section, this stylish suite has multiple balconies, expansive seating and dining areas, plunge pool, outdoor shower, outdoor soaker tub and an indoor two-person jacuzzi.

There are also 31 swim-out suites, with seven available in the adults-only section. Guests can upgrade to Preferred Club, which offers several benefits: family-friendly suites located close to the water park, Explorer’s Club for kids and Core Zone for teens, and the adults-only pool with swim up bar and adjacent hot tub, all overlooking the beach. There are also upgraded mini-bar options and a pillow menu to ensure sweet dreams.

The spacious suites include mid-century wood panelling, storage furniture, oversized cream stone

tiles and queen or king beds, with options for connecting suites to accommodate friend and multi-generational groups. Other perks include twice-daily housekeeping, a daily restocked minibar and a balcony with a soaker tub that provides Instagram-worthy sunset views.

With 24-hour room service, introverted clients will appreciate the ‘secret box’, a place for meals or drinks to be delivered without needing hotel staff to enter the room. Guests can return the dirty dishes to the secret box, which is quickly emptied by resort staff.

THE DAILY ITINERARY

Guests at Dreams Estrella del Mar can kick off the day with a Nespresso in-suite or their favourite coffee order, pastry or sandwich at Coco Café, located on the upper level. Below the lobby, World Café is an international buffet offering fresh fruit, pastries and traditional breakfast items, as well as specialty areas for omelets, smoothies and Mexican faves like quesadillas, chilaquiles and Estofado de Marlin, a local fish stew with smoked marlin and vegetables in a tomato broth. World Cafe is also open daily for lunch and dinner.

The menu at Kids Korner, a buffet featuring kidfriendly dining options, was created by Masterchef Junior Season 9 winner Bryson McGlynn and Season 8 semifinalist Ivy Childs. The for-kids-by-kids menu hopes to encourage younger guests to try new foods and flavours. The ongoing partnership between

Hyatt Corporation and FOX Television’s Master Chef Junior includes programming and pop-ups at select Dreams Resorts to inspire kids to embark on culinary adventures.

Sun seekers can easily set up at the resort’s numerous beach loungers, which ring the infinity pool, main pool or are lined along the beach. Consider reserving a pool cabana for a private and shady space at the pool, which includes sectional seating and a dedicated server. Beach volleyball, pool aerobics and yoga are on offer daily, while the gym provides a good place for a workout with views of the sea.

Guests can reserve their tee time at Dreams

Estrella del Mar via the hotel for discounted green fees. The 18-hole, par 72 golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., who has designed over 270 courses in 40 countries including California’s Poppy Hills at Pebble Beach and Hogs Head Golf Club in County Kerry, Ireland.

Golfers will be spoiled with the course’s six oceanfront holes, renovated greens and a newly updated clubhouse opening in January 2026. Resort guests also have access to activities like tennis, padel, pickleball and soccer. Clients choosing Preferred Club Premium Ocean Front category or higher receive complimentary green fees, driving range access and shared golf carts when booking a four-night minimum or longer stay until the end of 2025.

All ages can splash and play in the water park, which features water slides and a lazy river. When shade is needed, the under 11 set can head to the Explorer’s Club for table tennis, arts & crafts or movie screenings, while 12- to 17-year-olds can chill out in the Core Zone Teen Club to play video games or enjoy the mini disco.

The Dreams Spa is an expansive wellness centre, providing restorative options for guests who deserve some ‘me’ time. With eight treatment rooms for face and body therapies, the spa features the only hammam in Sinaloa, where guests can experience a guided session in the steam room or multiple body treatments

to exfoliate and hydrate. The hydrotherapy circuit includes sauna, showers, multiple jetted pools and cold plunge, culminating with meditation. Preferred Club members have complimentary access once during a stay for this wellness treatment.

LOVE & BUSINESS

Dreams Estrella del Mar features a wedding showroom for wedding parties to confirm all the details of their destination wedding. Within the Dreams Spa, there is a spacious bridal area for brides and bridesmaids to prepare ahead of the ceremony.

The resort also includes a gift boutique, pharmacy, medical clinic and a 700-person capacity convention centre, which includes smaller meeting rooms, perfect for corporate retreats or break-out sessions.

GASTRONOMY & MIXOLOGY

Barefoot Grill dishes out burgers, hot dogs and pizza all afternoon, while Dolce ice cream parlour is where to go for frozen treats like house-made gelato and paletas (Mexican frozen fruit treats). Oceana, the resort’s seafood restaurant, is open for lunch, showcasing locally-caught seafood like mahi-mahi, tuna, shrimp and octopus.

Happy hour can happen anytime at numerous bars across the resort. There’s the Manatees swim-up bar at the infinity pool, Barracuda bar for margaritas and a side of ceviche, Rendezvous lobby bar for drinks and

live music, or Desires, a lively sports bar that becomes a dance club until the wee hours.

Preferred Club members can take a break from the resort‘s lures with a coffee, cocktail or snack in the lounge, open daily from 7 a.m.-11p.m. A concierge is on hand to answer questions or advise on activities at the resort or in town. Included once during a guest’s stay, dinner options rotate throughout the week: World Café is open nightly; Portofino provides traditional Tuscan cuisine; Oceana for seafood; Asian-Mediterranean fusion at Meraki; and Sinaloa cuisine at El Patio, which opened in November 2025. The resort also sets up a weekly open-air buffet at the plaza, located in the resort’s upper-level corridor. Each restaurant offers gluten-free menu items and outdoor dining areas.

No reservations are required for any restaurant except for private dining at La Cava de Don Julio Berdegue, the wine cellar adjacent to Portofino. There is an additional charge for up to 14 guests to experience the chef’s tailored tasting menu.

Sales and Marketing Director Cristina Rodriguez says that the resort stands out because of its exclusivity, location and elevated approach to luxury. “Located inside the Estrella del Mar gated complex, it offers a calm and private atmosphere away from the busier Golden Zone. Guests enjoy access to a worldclass golf course and a long stretch of private goldensand beach – truly a rare find.”

PEACE OF MIND

How Manulife helps plan for the unexpected

How

has the demand for travel insurance among Canadians evolved in the past year?

“Many Canadians have chosen to travel domestically this past year, and many assumed our universal public health care would cover unforeseen events. In reality, coverage for certain emergency medical expenses varies by province so educating clients about the need for supplement travel insurance – even for domestic travel – was key in helping them purchase the right plan for their needs.

“As international travel rebounds, more Canadians are seeking comprehensive coverage that includes emergency medical and trip cancellation. These trips often represent a significant and hard-earned investment, so travellers are increasingly focused on protecting both their plans –and their peace of mind.”

What should travel advisors keep in mind when selling Manulife travel insurance to clients?

"Helping customers book a dream vacation is exciting – but helping them plan for the unexpected is essential. That’s where travel advisors play a critical role. By guiding clients through Manulife’s comprehensive coverage options, they help protect their investment and offer peace of mind that can make all the difference if something goes wrong.

"Travel advisors should continue to position insurance as essential to every booking – not just an optional add-on.

This includes clearly explaining coverage details and exclusions, especially for international travel. Their role goes beyond booking a dream vacation; it’s about helping clients travel with confidence, knowing they’re protected."

How is Manulife supporting travel advisors in understanding and communicating coverage details to clients?

“Manulife believes travel insurance is best delivered through our trusted travel agent network, which is why we’re committed to supporting travel professionals and their clients at every stage of the journey. Recently, we launched our new digital platform across our agency network. It’s designed to streamline the travel agent’s experience by making it easier to match clients with the right coverage for their travels, which simplifies the insurance process with intuitive tools, including the NonMedical Premium Protection Plan, the Product Selector Tool and automated engagement reminders.”

Are there any recent policy updates or new coverage features advisors should know about?

“We’ve introduced new product offerings, including the Non-Medical Premium Protection Plan, which offers greater flexibility for clients who don’t require emergency medical coverage. Additionally, our new 5% companion discount for bookings with two or more travellers has been very well received,

adding even more value for clients planning trips together.”

What role do you see travel insurance

playing in rebuilding traveller confidence?

“Travel insurance plays a critical role in rebuilding traveller confidence by helping them navigate life’s unknowns. Knowing they have a financial safety net in place helps reduce anxiety around ‘what if’ scenarios such as illness, cancellations, or disruptions, making travellers more comfortable committing to plans. Just as importantly, it allows them to fully enjoy their trip knowing they’re protected if the unexpected happens.”
