Portishead?s new post office is set to begin trading this month within a new convenience store at 50 High Street A Coscutter franchise is hoping,if things go to plan,to open in the former Boots premises on 25th April, hosting three Post Office counters - two full-screened and an open-plan counter alongside the retail counter of the shop
The full-screened counters, which will offer the full range of services, will be open Monday to Saturday 9am-5 30pm,with the Post Office counter alongside the retail tills being open daily from 8am-10pm This will provide 98 hours of Post Office service a week
The former health and beauty retail and pharmacy chain store premises have been empty since last summer and the experienced new postmaster for Portishead, has been recently undertaking a full refurbishment
The previous Portishead Post Office at 29-31High Street closed in January 2023,due to the closure of the McColl?s store where the Post Office had been
based and Portishead has been without a Post Officer counter service ever since, forcing customers who needed a Post Office to travel out of town to use facilities in towns and villages like Pill,Clevedon and Avonmouth
The Portishead Easter trail is back, bigger and better than ever before!
Everyone is invited to explore Portishead High Street and gather clues that will enable them to complete a sentence on the entry form, which will mean they?ll be in with a chance of winning a prize
From Friday 4th to Monday 21st April,12 Easter related posters will appear in shop windows in businesses in the town?s High Street,Stoke Road and Combe Road
Participants need to find the posters and write the word displayed on each poster on to the entry form The clues then need to be put together to form a sentence and all correct entries will be entered in to prize draw
The Easter trail, designed to promote our town centre, is organised by Tanya Marriott from SoleLution shoe
shop, the Easter egg prizes have been donated by family run funeral directors FH Halliday & Son and Reeds Rains estate agents has sponsored the printing of the entry forms and posters. All are Portishead High Street businesses
Entry forms are available from the shoe shop at 62 High Street for a £1fee,which will go to support vulnerable children in Africa Tanya is a keen supporter of the Jolaurabi School in Kenya and has been visiting the school annually with a group of local volunteers for several years, taking and fitting donated pre-worn shoes to hundreds of children She said:?The aim of the Easter trail is to get people out and about in our town centre exploring local businesses, enjoying hours of family fun, while also supporting those less fortunate than ourselves?
Tanya works with other independent traders to encourage local residents to use their local shops and is an advocate for excellence when it comes to customer service
The Easter Trail completed entry forms need to be returned to Solelution by 9am on 22nd April All correct entries will then be put in to a draw with Easter eggs and gift vouchers being up for grabs Winners will be notified and will be asked to collect their prizes from the shoe shop
The Friends of Trinity Easter Egg Hunt is back after school on 4th April Find the lettered eggs hidden around the school grounds, fill in your answer sheet and return it to receive your prize All children must be accompanied by an adult Book in advance via Ticketsource
This year I?m making a concerted effort to practice what we preach here at Enjoy and buy local to support our local businesses It?s true what they say:?if we don? t use them we may well lose them? ! It?s easy to jump onto social media and moan that the High Street is ?nothing but coffee and charity shops? these days but the only way we can do anything about it,is voting with our cash! Many different businesses have really tried in our town centre but if the customers aren? t there they can? t survive
Here are a few things I have recently purchased from Portishead High Street which has made me feel good that I've supported local:
I have a day to a page diary in the kitchen so that me and my dog sitter can write daily notes to each other, rather than scribble on odd scraps of paper or Post-it notes It?s actually really helpful as it?s also a record of when the dog sitter has been, for when it comes to settling up! Plus, some of the notes are hilarious; I really should put them into a book one day! Whilst it was a little more expensive,I was able to see and feel it before purchase, last year I got one off the internet and the paper quality was awful WATERPROOFTRAILTRAINERS? THESPORTSSHOP
I?ve always preferred walking the dogs in trainers rather than wellies or boots, which either take ages to put on or are difficult to pull off The trouble with most trainers is that they make for soggy feet if it?s wet My top tip is to buy waterproof trainers made for trail running They have good grip and keep your feet dry, and you don? t have to spend an hour lacing them up before you go Getting advice from Mark in The Sports Shop on which were the best ones and being
able to try them on is not something I?d have been able to do if I bought them online
Dogs LOVEchewing,it?s comforting and reassuring for them, but my boy dog Bradley has a penchant for chewing things that I?d rather he didn? t Therefore,if I?m out for any length of time I buy two of the filled hoofs from Berties The dogs absolutely LOVEthem and they keep them busy for the entire time I?m away; once they?ve polished off the filling, they get down to business on the hoof! Highly recommended if you have ?chewy?four legged friends
What AMAZING customer service from Bryant?s ? getting a new watch battery was easy, reasonably priced and done within five minutes I?ve used chain stores before for this and have had to leave my watch for a couple of days, but it was back on my wrist within minutes with Bryants, who also cleaned my silver chain for free when I asked the best way to do it! Bravo Bryants, you?re brilliant!
BAKED GOODS? THEBLOCKBAKEHOUSE
I can? t lie,I?m a regular visitor here (much to the disappointment of my personal trainer) but their stuff is just TOO GOOD! Whether it?s a mini quiche,a pasty, one of Paddington?s balls (check them out!) or a decent sausage or bacon bap, then The Block is absolutely top trumps!

This month Enjoy invited Emily Olive,a third-year magazine journalist from Portisheadcurrently studying at the University of Gloucestershire,to share one of her favourite local walks with us
This Portishead walk offers idyllic views,a subtle sea breeze and a fairytale forest - a perfect combination
You have the option to start your journey from The Royal Inn pub or the lighthouse on Battery Point, both are linked by the enchanting Eastwood woodland
By Emily Olive
Conservation charity The Woodland Trust describes this local nature reserve as ?wonderfully diverse woodland? The history of the woodland still resides today, with the remains of an Iron Age fort which can be seen above the path on the north side of the wood
The woodlands are just a short walk or drive from the town centre, offering quiet respite without having to travel far With both ends of this route defined by a set of steps, you?re welcome to venture into the woodlands and soak in the surroundings
Whether you?re a local looking for a quick escape from the everyday or a visitor to Portishead wanting to explore more of the area,Eastwood is an ideal place to reconnect with nature
As we head in to spring the woodlands will be decorated with picturesque foliage and beams of sunlight This forest escapade follows a clear trail with charming wooden benches placed throughout
to allow you to stop and experience the viewpoints looking over Portishead The well-maintained trails provide an ideal setting for walking, running,or simply taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of this historic woodland This path is also perfectly suited for a dog-friendly stroll It?s a place where you can experience the true wonder of a thriving ecosystem, all within the heart of Portishead
If you prefer a smoother path,a scenic coastal trail might be the perfect choice Instead of scaling steps into the woodland, follow the avenue of trees that guide you through Woodlands Road Still adorned with canopies of greenery, this route follows the quiet road between Battery Point and Eastwood viewpoint with the coast on one side and the woodland on the other
As the soft, azure coastline accompanies you through your stroll it contributes to the tranquil atmosphere This route may be preferential to families with young children still looking to explore the nature of Portishead without committing to a forest wander
Both routes are packed with wildlife, breathtaking scenery and natural beauty
Eastwood is more than just a peaceful retreat; it?s a sanctuary that allows you to enjoy the beauty of Portishead?s landscape
Accessible, welcoming and breathtakingly beautiful, this woodland gem is yours to explore

April marks 10 years since the Portishead Lifeboat Trust?s adoption
Before its adoption in to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) charity,Portishead was served by the Portishead Lifeboat Trust,an independent lifeboat rescue service that operated for around 20 years, saving lives in the Bristol Channel
The RNLI adoption took place in 2015 and so here we are,in 2025, celebrating 10 years of RNLI lifesaving in Portishead The station volunteers will be celebrating this milestone at their annual open day on 18th May; meanwhile Enjoy looks back over the past decade
new lifeboat station was declared open and operational It was a big day for all involved and a proud time for everyone including members of the public, to see the RNLI flag being hoisted up the flag pole for the first time
Back in 2012,it was agreed with both charities that once an appropriate location was found for a new lifeboat station, the RNLI would take over operations and take over providing the lifesaving service from the Portishead Lifeboat Trust
Operating from Sugar Loaf Beach in Portishead, the volunteers of Portishead Lifeboat Trust had a lot to deal with Their lifeboat station was an old shipping container which belonged to the Portishead Yacht and Sailing Club, there were no private facilities:no private changing area,no toilet or showers, not even the ability to make a hot cup of tea or coffee after a gruelling shout Things definitely needed improvement and the RNLI offered a way forward
Months of research began looking for a new site and the former Masonic Lodge at the end of Pier Road proved to be a perfect location Demolition and building work to create a modern, safe and secure home for the volunteers to operate from began in March 2014
After 12 months of construction and many hours of training from their new location,on 25th April 2015 the
Over the past 10 years Portishead RNLI volunteers have been called out 396 times, saved 14 lives, assisted 347 people and 17 dogs All of these rescues were undertaken in an area that has the second highest tidal range in the world and where strong tides, dangerous shoals, steep and unpredictable seas, along with a high density of shipping, make for extremely challenging and hazardous conditions for even the most experienced mariner
Tom Mansell,RNLI regional operations lead, said: ?Portishead should be proud of its reputation within the RNLI as an excellent lifeboat station, providing a lifesaving service to its community and those who use the sea and surrounding coastline in the area
Having been an independent lifeboat service prior to joining the RNLI family it has a proud tradition and I am extremely grateful for the dedication and professionalism the volunteers show on a daily basis for this very important task Well done and thank you to all involved ?
Full details of the open day on 18th May will feature in the next issue of Enjoy, with more information available on the RNLI Portishead?s social media pages
After a long, cold winter, Portishead Open Air Pool is excited to welcome spring and kick off the new heated season Starting Saturday 12th April the doors will be open to everyone and the seafront facility will be celebrating in the evening with its first full moon swim of the year
Despite the chilly winter, dedicated cold-water swimmers have been enjoying weekend dips in temperatures as low as 8°C,totalling 1,300 swims over the winter
by Solarsense
before Christmas and have been generating more than 20kW in the spring sunshine On sunny summer days, they will provide nearly all the pool?s electricity needs
The second stage of the project, installing solar thermal panels on the terraces to work with the biomass boiler to heat the pool,is almost complete
In 2024 the pool received a £140,000 grant from the Swimming Pool Support Fund, administered by Sport England,to install solar panels These were installed
Volunteer and premises manager,Andy Thatcher, said:"It is very satisfying looking at the solar PV today ? which looks stunning on the roof I can look down at my solar energy app and see the energy we?re producing On long, bright days we should be able to run this place with a zero-energy bill"
First event of the year on the town?s gardening calendar is hailed a great success
Portishead Horticultural Society kicked off this year?s gardening calendar with an incredible start, showcasing more than 200 entries in the town?s Spring Show and welcoming scores of visitors through their doors
The Folk Hall was transformed into a sea of colour from one end to the other as the floral scents of spring spilled out on to the High Street The sun shone, the exhibits looked glorious and everyone had a slice or two of homemade cake with their cuppa
Entries ranging from spring blooms and fresh veg to mouth-watering cookery, preserves, miniature gardens, handicrafts and artwork, were all proudly displayed, submitted by members of the community from small children to senior citizens It was great to see more young people than ever before, not only visiting the show but exhibiting too
A society spokesperson said:?It is brilliant to be back and to see the fantastic work everyone has been doing in their gardens, kitchens and beyond We are delighted so many people made so much effort to make the show a success and would like to thank all entrants, sponsors and visitors?
Members of the organisation are now working hard in preparation for the society?s two-day Summer Show (formerly known as the Portishead Flower Show and Country Fair) which takes place on the Show Field,Clapton Lane at the end of July Schedules for the summer show are available in many local shops now and will also be available to download at www portisheadflowershow com
Reviews by Hayley Mildren, owner of Hartmanns Books
This is the second book from 2021Masterchef finalist Alexina Anatole Whether you call it dessert, pudding or ?afters?- this is a true celebration of all things sweet There is an introduction to the history of sugar and our relationship with it and also helpful advice on balancing flavours and elevating your baking Each recipe is accompanied by beautiful photographs ? including Jamaican hummingbird cake, peach melba galette and raspberry and coconut hand pies ? to truly tempt those taste buds
Join the adventurous family of bunnies as they go on an Easter egg hunt They will need help to find all the eggs as there are many obstacles on their journey ? a garden with bees,a pond with ducks, and chicks and lambs This is a beautifully illustrated children?s picture book, with interactive lift-the-flap features to discover the eggs A non-chocolate seasonal treat for young children!
A teen-fiction debut from Margaret McDonald that packs an emotional punch Finlay has gone straight from care to starting a nursing degree, but without a support network is failing to juggle writing essays, finding a part-time job and attempting not to fall for the beautiful boy at university Banjo is trying his best to settle in with his new foster family but struggles to keep his anger and fear from taking over A heartbreaking, yet hopeful, story about friendship and love
Miranda and Charlotte?s parents live in a run-down house in the French countryside that they share with two llamas, eight ducks and a freezer full of food dating back to the eighties Married for 50 years, their parents are extremely set in their ways When the sisters attempt to uncover the true story of their parents?marriage, their quite brilliant mother and father deflect at every opportunity This is a witty, moving novel about two complicated, secretive and maddening individuals ? a brilliant family saga
By Angela Kingdon,an American living in Portishead
In the US,my best friend's husband, Ryan, needed a heart and kidney transplant He didn? t have private health insurance,so he died - at 42 That?s the reality of American healthcare It?s one of the reasons why I will never complain about the NHS
Americans are used to stories like Ryan?s If you?re rich, you get good healthcare,if you?re poor you get medical debt, bankruptcy and quite likely an early death But that?s only part of what makes for-profit healthcare so terrible. What people outside the USoften don? t understand is the constant, grinding burden of navigating our nightmare system
We don? t just ?have?healthcare the way Brits do Many Americans get health insurance with their jobs, others buy it from a public exchange; but no matter how you get it,you still have to pick your plan from the ones available to you Each has a different price and you must pick based on what you think might happen to your body in the next 12 months Will you need an ambulance? An MRI? Cancer treatment? An expensive prescription? Guess wrong and you could be paying thousands more out of pocket,or worsebe unable to afford the care you need
Even when you do get medical care, the nightmare isn? t over Imagine breaking a bone and going to A & E(or as we call it,the ER) In the UK,you get treated and go home In the USyou scream in pain while signing forms and providing your credit card for an unknown dollar amount before treatment is rendered
When you get home, you wait for the bills ? plural - to arrive Each service is billed separately:x-rays, anaesthetic, blood work, even the bandages Every bill has multiple, inconsistent prices and if you don? t pay one,it may come back with a different amount
The first time I called 111in the UK,I hesitated; years of conditioning had taught me that every call to a doctor was a waiting disaster; but here I got medical advice,an antibiotic,no bill and no hassle
I know the NHSis struggling Almost every Brit I meet tells me how bad it?s gotten, but compared to what I came from the NHSis still an absolute marvel I don? t worry about whether I can afford to see a doctor I know I?m not going to waste hours fighting insurance companies I don? t have to calculate whether I think going to see a doctor is going to be ?worth it ?That alone is priceless
Yes,taxes in the USare lower, but when you add the cost of private insurance,co-pays,deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses, most Americans pay far more for taxes plus healthcare than Brits do and get far less in return.Even if you add £1,000 a year for private insurance like BUPA,you still come out ahead in the UK
That?s why I have to say this as loudly as I can:DO NOTTAKETHENHSFORGRANTED Do not let it slip away into privatisation Do not let Parliament chip away at its funding Fight for the NHS Invest in it Demand better for it,because once it?s gone,it?s never coming back

With a lifelong love of anim als, there was never any doubt in Mike Maguire?s m ind that he would one day be a vet
Despite his passion for caring for animals,Mike Maguire was told by careers advisors at school he?d never be a vet; he was delighted to prove those people wrong?
His parents would have preferred him to be a doctor but Mike, who from an early age had developed a passion for bringing home all sorts of wildlife to care for, decided he was much more suited to a career in veterinary care
With both parents working full-time Mike wasn? t allowed to have pets when he was growing up,as no-one was home to look after them, however he had other ideas. His determination to have ?pets?first became apparent when his mother opened the airing cupboard one day and a bunch of moths flew out at her,the result of him tending caterpillars in secret Bringing home bugs in jars, fish in buckets of water from local ponds and injured birds, which he looked after in his bedroom, all followed
Originally from Belfast Mike went on to graduate from Bristol University in 2010 and accepted an internship at the University of Bristol?s Langford Veterinary Services
He stayed and worked in the South West in a GP practice for three years, after which he moved into an emergency and critical care role During this time Mike developed a keen interest in emergency work, especially emergency diagnostic imaging, successfully completing post graduate certificates in both emergency and critical care and in diagnostic imaging
In 2021Mike moved into a mixed role at a veterinary referral/specialist centre, splitting his time as both
the head of service for the emergency and critical care unit/intensive care unit and as a diagnostic ultra sonographer He worked closely with specialists during this time, developing and refining his skills and embarked on a third post graduate certificate, this time in advanced veterinary ultrasound and a diploma in advanced veterinary practice
Mike joined the Vets 4 Pets practice in Portishead just a few months ago, bringing with him much specialist expertise
He now has his own pets ? two dogs, two cats and a budgie - although none of them were chosen in the traditional way!
He adopted his first puppy after its breeder owners decided against keeping a puppy with a damaged eye that needed removing Mike carried out the surgery himself and took the puppy home His second dog came from an expectant dog needing a cesarean section Reluctant to pay for it the owners decided they didn? t want the dog any longer.Mike couldn? t see it put to sleep so he paid for the surgery and adopted one of the puppies, with other members of staff at the practice adopting the mum and the other pups Mike took ownership of a cat when he discovered it in a poorly state in a carrier bag near the practice he was working at and his second cat became his after its owner,a family member, sadly died
As for the budgie ? don? t ask! He agreed to keep after it was posted through someone?s letter box
Mike would like to make it clear that unfortunately he has no room for anymore pets right now!
Portishead?s very own ?super vet?Mike Maguire, talks about his veterinary career
His intense interest in emergency work, managing trauma and diagnostic imaging beyond routine, has earned Mike Maguire quite a reputation Tracie Fry went along to talk to the vet at the Vets 4 Pets practice in Portishead, where he works WHAT ISTHEMOST REWARDING PART OFYOUR JOB?
Without a doubt it?s seeing a very poorly pet recover When we have treated an animal that?s been in a bad way and then watch a dog leave wagging its tail,or a cat purring and an owner beaming from ear to ear at the results,it?s a real buzz That never stops being the highlight
WHAT DO YOU THINK HASCHANGED MOST IN VETERINARYCARESINCEYOU FIRST QUALIFIED?
One of the biggest advancements I think is that we have a lot more specialisms now in the UKthan when I first graduated Then,we had specialists in medicine and specialists in surgery and that was about it These days however we have specialisms in emergency and critical care, surgery, medicine, dermatology, cardiology, neurology and oncology Diagnostic imaging, which is now one of my main interests, has changed considerably since I graduated The main stay of looking at internal body structures used to be radiologists looking at x-rays and interpreting them accordingly Although we still need x-rays,we also now use MRI and CTscans and do a lot more ultrasound which is much less invasive for the pets
I UNDERSTAND YOU HAVEA NEW STATE OFTHEART ULTRASOUND SCANNER HEREIN PORTISHAD VETS4 PETSNOW?
We certainly do It?s amazing what this machine can do We can scan many parts of the body, from abdominal organs,to hearts,to musculoskeletal structures ? even eyes can be scanned and this new machine works faster, producing clearer images, interpreting the soundwaves so much better,we can even watch blood flowing through the blood vessels
YOU?VEONLYBEEN IN PORTISHEAD FOR A FEW MONTHS, HOW AREYOU FINDING IT?
I love the Bristol area in general and Portishead is brilliant I love the walks and things, but more importantly I love the way our clients care so very much for their pets I can? t help noticing how pet owners here are so keen to get their pets checked regularly, keep their vaccines up to date and always want the very best for their pets I have to say it?s not been like that in all the places I?ve worked
HOW DO YOU SPEND YOURTIMEAWAYFROM WORK?
Obviously,my animals take up some of my time but I?m a big gamer too ? you know, like Play Station I also love tabletop games and board games; I?m a cinema buff too,I love films
DO YOU HAVEANY ADVICEFORANYONETHINKING OF STUDYING TO BEA VET?
Consider the part of the job that involves ending the life of animals It is unfortunately a big part of the job but it?s an important part Also look into the different areas of veterinary medicine as there are options other than working veterinary consulting; there are many niches you can specialise in and there?s also things like research and lab work
Choosing a dog day care centre has great benefits for your pet as it provides a safe, stimulating environment for social interaction, exercise and mental enrichment, while also offering peace of mind for owners
The Country Canine, set in the Clapton in Gordano countryside, has never been more popular; it?s a real home from home for dogs seven days a week Whether you need pet care on a one off or ad hoc basis,or need day care regularly,The Country Canine is now open 7.30am-5.30pm which means it?s never been more
cost effective ? working out at around £280 an hour For this you know your dog will be well cared for all day long by experienced pet lovers.
Bex Letts, who runs The Country Canine said:?Once people have used our facilities they keep coming back for more, that in itself is testament to the service we provide Our care has proved so popular that we are currently in the process of creating a boarding facility for dogs too With numbers limited,I urge anyone seeking a dog hotel this summer to register their interest now as we will be up and running before the summer and are already taking bookings?

Exercise offers significant mental health benefits at any age, making it a powerful tool for improving overall wellbeing Regular physical activity promotes the release of endorphins, the body?s natural mood enhancers, which can help reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and depression For older adults, staying active improves cognitive function, enhances memory and reduces the risk of mental decline associated with ageing For young people, exercise provides an outlet for pent-up energy and helps in building confidence and emotional resilience It also fosters better sleep patterns, which is crucial for mental health Physical activity can also help manage chronic conditions like anxiety and depression, offering a natural, accessible way to cope with these challenges
The social aspect of exercise, such as participating in group fitness classes or sports, also plays a crucial role in combating feelings of loneliness or isolation This connection with others is especially valuable for older adults, who may experience social disengagement as they age
Incorporating regular exercise into daily lifewhether through walking, yoga, cycling,or other activities - improves not only physical health but also provides long-lasting positive effects on mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall life satisfaction,no matter one?s age.

Waxing is by far the most popular choice for hair removal, maintaining smooth,summer-ready skin with minimal effort and with this month?s special offer, there?s never been a better time to take advantage of the benefits of waxing at Tonic
Waxing is a hair removal treatment that involves applying a thin layer of wax to the skin and then removing it,along with the hair,in one swift motion. This technique removes hair from the root, leading to longer-lasting smoothness compared to other methods like shaving It is also a great form of exfoliation!

*Reduce risk of ingrown hairs*
*Leave hair to grow a little* *Exfoliate the day before* *Avoid lotions and oils on appointment day* *Wear comfortable clothing immediately after*

According to a report by Nuffield Health, around 49% of Brits said their sleep habits have worsened in recent years, with the majority of them reporting less than six hours sleep a night. With that in mind, sleep experts at Bed Kingdom are keen to share common information about foods that can help support a restful night?s sleep, including kiwis, cherries, oily fish and chamomile
The sleep experts say:?While many people resort to a glass of wine or two to help them drift off in the evening, this can actually be detrimental to the quality of our sleep in the long run
?There are several much more sensible options that you can add to your diet to help boost your chance of getting some quality zzz's?
Here are som e of the foods, that according to science, could help you get a good night?s sleep :
Kiwis - while researchers are not entirely sure why kiwis are so good for sleep, they attribute their slumber-aiding properties to the high number of vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and E
Cherries - tart or sour cherries have an antioxidant effect, which can increase total sleep time and efficiency thanks to the high concentrations of the sleep hormone melatonin This can help regulate circadian rhythm and promote healthy sleep
Malted m ilk ? known more commonly by the brand name Horlicks, consuming malted milk powder before bedtime has been proven to increase sleep quality and reduce interruptions, thanks to the high levels of vitamins Band D
Oily fish ? oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and trout are high in vitamin D and omega-3,which help the body regulate serotonin Studies have found that those who eat at least three portions of oily fish a week experience better overall sleep
Nuts - nuts such as almonds, pistachios, walnuts and cashews contain melatonin and sleep-promoting minerals like magnesium and zinc, which have been found to help improve the symptoms of sleep disorders like insomnia
As well as highlighting sleep-promoting foods, the experts also reveal which supplements can help achieve better sleep
The smell of lavender has a relaxing effect as it interacts with the neurotransmitter GABA to act as an anxiety reliever This helps quiet the brain and nervous system activity to aid a good night?s sleep Lavender comes in many scented forms, including pillow sprays, diffusers, and topical creams
Thanks to an antioxidant called apigenin, chamomile has a calming effect on the brain, making it easier to fall asleep This wonder plant can be consumed via tea or supplement form, but make sure to check before consuming it,as it can interfere with certain medications
Supplementing diets with foods high in magnesium has been shown to reduce the stress hormone cortisol and promote melatonin Snacking on dark chocolate, nuts and seeds will help boost levels naturally Alternatively,it can be taken as a supplement before bed to relax muscles and prepare the body for sleep
The sleep experts suggest considering adding these foods and supplements to your daily routine to promote relaxation and improve your sleep before going down the pharmaceutical route Information courtesy of www bedkingdom co uk

Top tips for keeping injury free in the garden by Ruth Haskew, an osteopath at Walnut Grove Clinic
As spring rapidly approaches,I don? t know about you but I can? t wait to get back into the garden This week,I?m starting by sowing my saved sweet pea seeds and planning out the veggie beds
When the sun starts shining and we feel inspired to start gardening it's easy to overdo it In an ideal world,we?d all have kept up with winter exercise workouts to make the upcoming digging and bending a bit easier? whether that means practicing tai chi at home or hitting the gym. While it?s never too late to begin a solid routine to get your body ready for gardening, what can we do to keep our bodies feeling great while we?re out there, especially if we?re not quite on top form?
Here are my top tips for gardening in a way that keeps your body happier and healthier
Our bodies don? t appreciate surprises! After a winter break,it?s tempting to jump right back into gardening with full force, but it's better to ease in slowly Doing too much at once can strain your muscles and joints and that can lead to pain Start with shorter, more manageable gardening sessions and gradually increase your time as your body gets used to the activity If like me you get caught up in the joy of gardening, setting a timer can help remind you not to overdo it
Gardening is an excellent way to stay active, but just like any workout, warming up is important A gentle warm-up can help prevent muscle strain and improve your flexibility On cooler days, make sure to bundle up so your muscles don? t stiffen up
Taking regular breaks can be just as important as shorter gardening sessions Break up tasks in the garden with some ?tea breaks?,whether it?s brewing a cuppa or simply stepping back to admire your progress Resting your body between tasks, especially when doing repetitive movements like weeding, can help you avoid strain
After a break,it?s a good idea to switch tasks to avoid doing the same type of motion repeatedly For example,if you?ve been bending forward for weeding, try standing tasks like trimming after a rest
Tools like kneelers can relieve pressure on your knees, while long-handled tools can make tasks easier on your back and hands However, make sure you?re not stuck in one position or working on the same task for too long, even with the right tool for the job
Gardening often involves bending tasks,so using your legs for support is key Try kneeling on one knee or bending one leg,(like making a proposal to your plants),to take some pressure off your back during tasks like planting or weeding
When working in the garden, keeping yourself
centered can help prevent unnecessary strain Move your tools closer to where you?re working so you don? t have to overreach This is especially important when trimming hedges on a ladder or doing tasks like weeding
If you?re faced with heavy or bulky loads like full watering cans, compost bags,or planters,be sure to assess the weight carefully These can put a strain on your body, especially if you?re not fully warmed up or are working at a lower fitness level If it feels too heavy, don? t hesitate to ask for help, wait for assistance,or break it into smaller loads For example, try filling your wheelbarrow with less compost at a time or filling your watering can halfway and make more trips This not only helps your body but also keeps you moving and helps meet your daily step count!
I hope these tips help keep your body comfortable and pain-free while you enjoy your time in the garden If you?re struggling with aches or pains that make gardening difficult, don? t give up! Feel free to pop in to Walnut Grove Clinic for personalised advice on managing your symptoms and making gardening a more enjoyable experience
Portishead
counsellor and
cognitive
hypnotherapist
Trina Gazzard talks about the many ways she has been helping those supporting loved ones with dementia
There are many suggestions why dementia seems to be on the increase It?s largely put down to people living longer, but there are also additional theories behind this rise ranging from genetics to lifestyle factors
When Enjoy asked local counsellor and cognitive hypnotherapist Trina Gazzard who her typical clients are,she explained the range is vast She did however tell us she is seeing an increase in the number of clients who are supporting a loved one with dementia,so ahead of the Alzheimer?s Society?s Dementia Action Week next month,we asked Trina to explain how she can help those in that position
She said:?Caring for someone with dementia is both an act of love and an emotional challenge and counselling can provide a safe space in which to talk openly about feelings of grief, frustration, guilt,or anxiety
In addition,as a counsellor and hypnotherapist,I help caregivers navigate the changing dynamics of communication and the quiet grief of losing a loved one while they are still present
Dementia alters the way people express and process thoughts Many caregivers struggle with frustration or sadness when conversations become confusing or one-sided I provide guidance on connecting in new ways, for example focusing on tone, body language and emotional presence rather than just words By shifting expectations and embracing meaningful moments, caregivers can foster a sense of calm and understanding
Beyond communication,I regularly support clients in processing the grief that comes with watching someone fade Anticipatory grief - the mourning that occurs before a loss - is real and valid Through counselling and hypnotherapy,I help caregivers release guilt, find peace in the present and build emotional resilience
Caring for someone with dementia is not just about supporting them; it?s also about ensuring you have the emotional strength to continue If you are
struggling with the weight of this journey, you don? t have to do it alone If you would like some help to guide you toward greater clarity, peace and connection please get in touch for an informal chat to see how I can help "

Ah,April? the days get longer, the sun peeks out (occasionally) and suddenly, after months of hibernation, people decide now is the perfect time to single-handedly landscape their garden over a single weekend
We see it every year Someone who hasn? t lifted more than a cup of tea all winter suddenly goes full lumberjack, felling trees, hauling fence panels and shifting enough gravel to resurface the M5.By Monday morning, they?re walking like a 90-year-old cowboy, clutching their lower back and cursing their enthusiasm
Here?s the problem:your body is not a light switch You can? t go from ?cosy on the sofa?to ?weekend warrior?without some consequences Months of inactivity mean your muscles and joints aren? t quite
as ready for action as your brain thinks they are And that?s where injuries happen - pulled backs, seized-up shoulders, even knees that suddenly decide they?ve had enough
The good news? You can absolutely get stuck into the garden without needing to be stretchered out of it
Warm up first, pace yourself and for the love of all things green, lift properly - your spine will thank you
Better yet,pop in for a free spinal check-up before you tackle that jungle We?ll make sure everything is moving as it should,so your only regret is over planting the tomatoes Book in now at www lifealigneduk com or give us a call on 01174 038 612, and let?s keep your gardening ambitions - and your spine - intact!
April marks a vibrant turning point in the UKgardening calendar,as the days grow longer and warmer, signalling the perfect time to prepare and plant your garden With the risk of frost still present in early April, gardeners need to stay vigilant, but this month lays the groundwork for a flourishing garden that will bloom beautifully throughout the year
Before diving into planting, clear away any debris, such as fallen leaves or twigs that may have accumulated over the winter months This not only tidies up your garden but also reduces the chance of pests and diseases
Next, assess the soil quality April is an ideal time to add organic matter, such as well-rotted manure or compost,to enrich the soil
Cool-season crops, such as peas, carrots and radishes, can be sown directly into the ground, or if you?re keen on growing salad greens, this is the perfect time to plant lettuce, spinach and kale For those planting flowers, consider hardy annuals like calendula, nigella and sweet peas; these flowers are not only beautiful but also attract beneficial insects to your garden Herbs like parsley, chives and coriander can also be sown in April
Applying a layer of organic mulch around your plants can help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature As the mulch breaks down, it will also add nutrients back into the soil
With a little dedication and care, your garden will flourish, providing beauty and sustenance for you and your family
Making the most of your garden in April involves thoughtful planning and the integration of various elements such as fences, walls, planters and sheds
These features not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also improve functionality and create a cohesive outdoor space
Fences can serve as both a boundary and a decorative element Consider using trellises with climbing plants like jasmine or clematis to soften the look of your fence while adding vertical interest
Painted wooden fences can introduce colour and charm, while stone walls lend a rustic feel
Incorporating planters at the base of walls or fences can create a layered look, allowing for flowers and greenery to flourish
Decking can be used to create patios, seating areas and paths in the garden and it can also be used to level uneven ground, define spaces, and add style to your garden
In addition,a well-placed garden shed can serve as
both a practical storage solution and a design feature Choose a shed that complements your garden style - whether it?s a classic wooden design or a modern, sleek structure Paint it in a colour that harmonises with your plants and surrounding elements You can even use the shed as a backdrop for climbing plants to integrate it into the garden landscape
By thoughtfully incorporating these elements, you can create a beautiful and functional outdoor space that reflects your personal style
We would like to thank everyone who joined us in the Secret Garden at Venga to help celebrate our two years in print Huge thanks especially to Jill and the team at Venga for pushing the boat out and making it such a memorable occasion and of course, thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey from sponsors and advertisers to you the readers Long may Enjoy Portishead continue!
Spring is in the air and I have the urge to breathe some fresh vibes into the house! Let's face it though,it's been a tough year for everyone and while the glossy interior magazines and social influencers are goading us to put up colourful wallpaper and embrace mid-century antique pieces, who has the budget for that?
I am however loving the new earthy tones that are replacing the tired greys and surgical whites,so this month I thought we could look at three home styles and how to embrace these tones, updating our personal space without breaking the bank
1.
Don't panic,we?re not talking oversized floral prints here and definitely not roses on the china but more contemporary, think botanical beauty
I would scour the charity shops for vintage looking frames and create a gallery of prints using soft green leaves and vegetation ? or press my own leaves and flowers from the garden to frame, creating a pretty art collection with a personal touch Finish the look with a large rustic container for example a terracotta pot brimming with large colourful flowers like hydrangeas or geraniums
3.
2.
If you prefer a modern edgy aesthetic and want to move away from industrial steel in favour of earthy tones, try swapping out the black and grey metal finishes for reclaimed wood Hang Edison bulbs from sleepers,or look out for wooden light shades, these look great against exposed brick but if you don? t have a brick wall you can create the look with brick slips or clever wallpaper Finish the look with warm copper accessories
I love the calm feeling a coastal interior brings For a long time the cool blue palette has dominated this theme,so I am excited to turn up the heat and bring in a warm summer glow this season Starting with the cushions, out go the crisp white linen in favour of warm yellow velvets Next introduce a soft sage green by planting up sea grass in pots and popping them into baskets to display Lastly, bring back some seaside memories by adding warm stripey beach towels to the bathrooms and a display of earthy coloured pebbles collected by the children over many years of beachcombing
Whatever your style, embrace the power of earthy tones, they create a calming, grounding atmosphere in your home ? perfect for busy lives

Four local ladies who featured in an earlier edition of Enjoy, asthey prepared to embark on a trek in the Sahara Desert to raise fundsfor St Peter?s Hospice, would like to thank everyone who supported them. All four successfully completed the four-day 30km trek through some of the highest dunes, while braving scorching sun, blasting winds and cold nights They raised a whopping £12,565 between them and as they self-funded their travel costs, every penny donated has gone to the charity
Claire Taylor, who chose to support the charity in appreciation of the care given to her mother in her final weeks, said: ?The trek wasn? t easy but the challenge was definitely helped by the training we put in beforehand There were many highs and lowsduring the four days, but the camaraderie and support of other group members pulled everyone back up when they were low and it was a truly wonderful experience. Thank you to everyone who supported us.?
Most local residents know how hard volunteers from Portishead in Bloom work to keep our town looking its best, with year-round offerings of flowers blooming in the blue tubs in the town centre and the memorable displays of roses in Rodmoor Gardens (formerly known as the Rose Garden) There are many other areas, small and large, that they care for, such as the boat roundabout at the entry to the town, the community orchard near Sheepway, Jubilee Park and the town garden near the library, as well as beds on Wyndham Way and Woodhill Road and at the corners of Albert Road and Station Road Some volunteers take care of whole beds on their own or with the help of neighbours
Group members also work together with other groups to keep Portishead looking delightful, for example they work with the scouts who plant up the beds near the boat roundabout twice a year and also work with the local schools, nurseries and the youth centre as

First on the list is new red recycling bags for recycling household plastic and metal packaging, which will start being delivered to North Somerset households this month The new red bag provides extra space for more recycling, is weighted and secures with a Velcro strip across the top to prevent litter blowing away

Portishead shop manager,Sandy Philpott, said: ?Our new shop will offer local people a full range of pre- loved items from gifts to clothes to bric- a- brac and it sits right in the heart of a community that sees the value in buying second- hand goods, reusing and recycling ?
A brand new North Somerset Council app will also launch in April to make recycling even easier, with the option to set up reminders for when to put out bins and receive real-time information about the service
Later in the year there will be a move to three-weekly black bin collections, in line with the council?s Recycling and Waste strategy, which aims to reduce non-recycled waste and reach a recycling rate of 70 per cent by 2030.
