Sadik Al- Hassan was interested in politics from a young age,so after 20 years working as a pharmacist,it came as no surprise to those who know him, when he became an MP
Sadik Al-Hassan took an interest in politics when he was a child; he set up the debating society at his school and would often call for change to improve things He was a good communicator and thought he?d make a pretty good politician but then,he says, realism kicked in and he decided he needed a steady career that would pay the bills and in time support a family
He studied hard and decided to follow the career of a pharmacist He graduated from the University of
Bath and worked as a pharmacist in a number of different organisations in many different locations
Sadik now lives in Pill with his wife and two children and after around 20 years working as a pharmacist and also in pharmacy public relations,he has returned to his first love ? politics In May 2024 he was elected MPfor North Somerset.
Local MPSadik Al-Hassan talked to Enjoy about his journey in to politics
YOU?REORIGINALLYFROM THE WIRRAL, WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THEWEST COUNTRY?
My work! I worked as a pharmacist for a number of organisations and in 2012 took a job in Devon I travelled to Bristol socially a fair bit and loved it After a few years I secured work in Bristol and moved, firstly to Brislington and then Emerson?s Green
WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN POLITICS?
I joined the Labour Party after the birth of my second son Both my children were born early,at Southmead Hospital Whilst they both received great care,I was shocked at the difference between my first son?s hospital stay and my second I noticed the staff were more stretched and volunteers were stepping in to posts previously held by employed staff It made me think about the NHSand then other things in the country that needed to improve That spurred me on to get involved with the local council to see if I could help make a difference to things,at least in the local area.I became a local councillor in Emerson?s Green and was then elected deputy mayor, while still working full-time as a pharmacist That?s when I started thinking about the possibility of standing as a local MP
Around the same time I saw an opportunity to stand for MPfor North Somerset and the rest,as they say,is history!
DO YOU HAVEASPIRATIONSTO FURTHERYOURPOLITICAL CAREER? WOULD YOU LIKEA MOVETO THECABINET?
Everyone has a day dream and if I was asked to serve my country I?m not sure I would be able to say no,however right now my focus is on improving things in North Somerset for the communities here
DO YOU HAVEANY ADVICEFOR ANYONECONTEMPLATING GETTING INVOLVED IN LOCAL POLITICS?
Do it! Go along to your local council meetings and see how things work Then if you feel you can make a difference stand for council and get yourself elected Have a say in decision making and represent the people in your ward, village or town
WHAT ADVICEDO YOU HAVEFORYOUNG PEOPLE WANTING TO FOLLOW A POLITICALCAREERORBETHE NEXT PRIMEMINSTER?
HOW DID THEMOVETO NORTH SOMERSET COME ABOUT?
We had moved in to a new build in Bristol and were beginning feel the need for a property with more character When we saw the house in Pill for sale I thought it would be great being a pharmacist and living in ?Pill?but that wasn? t the only factor for the move! The property didn? t have everything we were looking for but somehow it just felt right for us.
If you want to study politics and work in a government office,be a civil servant or work alongside politicians, great, work hard and learn all you can If,however, your aim is to become a politician, think about what you could bring to the table What worldly experience you have,if you can demonstrate where you have made a difference If you want a starting point, join a political party which has values that align with yours Get involved in local politics - stand for council once you?re old enough Get as much experience as you can, while following a career of choice, then when you have enough experience and you?re ready to take on the world,it might be time to think about standing for MP.

Whilst I?m more of a summer boy, there are some things I enjoy about this time of the year such as the clocks going back on the 26th of this month
Before we look at the ?loves?,let?s talk about when the heating should be turned back on Personally, because my father was a northerner and shall we say of a ?frugal?mindset,I?ll always try to hold out as long as possible I almost made December one year - gosh dad would have been proud Anyway my advice is? if you?re cold, pop a jumper on and if you?ve already got a jumper on, put another one on!
Now for the loves? hot chocolate Whilst it?s available all year round,I don? t feel it?s appropriate to have a hot chocolate between the months of April and October However,as we ease into the last quarter of the year the chocolatey creamy loveliness is just the perfect end to a chilly dog walk Top tip from me would be to add a little shot of hazelnut syrup with cream on the top
On to clothing next - whilst anyone who knows me will tell you that I wear shorts all year around,I do enjoy the addition of a nice hoodie I don? t often wear the hood over my head, but it does act as a sort of scarf and keeps my neck warm Being a ?bald bro? means my head also gets pretty chilly and whilst I?m very rarely without a cap,at this time of year I can bust out the beanies which keeps the dome temperature under control and gives a whole new range of fashion options I also have special gloves
with finger tips that still operate touch screens which is such a game changer,no more freezing hands whilst you?re outside scrolling I do enjoy a gadget I might get one of those jackets with a heating element in them this year, although I do worry about the old electric blanket scenario and accidentally setting myself on fire
At this time of year I also LOVEmy car When I was made redundant from the radio station in 2021I decided use some of my payout to treat myself to a nice car I have an app on my phone that can control various elements of the vehicle and the benefits at this time of the year are that if I?m on an early shift,I can set the car the night before to turn on the heaters half an hour before I have to leave, meaning the windscreen is clear and the seats and steering wheel are warm from the moment I get in to drive to the ITV West Country studio and direct our bulletins for Good Morning Britain! It also has a function to sound the horn and flash the lights if you?ve lost it in a car park, which I?ve had use a little too often for my liking.
So whilst the days of short sleeves and sandals are over for now and walks along the sea wall are a little squidgier, there are some things to look forward to and I?ve not even mentioned Christmas yet!

By Angela Kingdon,an American living in Portishead
As an American living in Portishead, there's nothing better than sitting at a pub, enjoying a pint and laughing with friends about British versus American words ?Hood?vs ?bonnet? ?pudding?vs ?dessert??sweater" vs ?jumper?? it never gets old (seriously, where is the jumper jumping?) Even tourists here for just a day happily join in the "your word, our word"giggle game After living here, however, I?ve realised those differences sometimes run deeper than just funny vocabulary
Take, for example,"free trial"and "taster session" On the surface, they seem interchangeable:you try something without paying Recently,I've come to see these terms aren't like "sneakers"versus "trainers", instead, they're windows into something far more significant
In America,a yoga studio or music teacher might offer a "free trial class"while in the UKI have noticed the term "taster session"is more common It feels distinctly transactional in the US,implying you'll probably sign up afterwards The focus isn't just experiencing yoga or music lessons; it's converting you into a paying customer In contrast, here in England, this approach has a softness and a subtle invitation:the emphasis is on experiencing something new, without any expectation or pressure to commit immediately Whether it?s a gym membership or a new car,I am constantly surprised by how much ?easier?it is to buy things in the US, because you are always being sold to I had no idea we did this!
Both America and England have capitalist economies, but in America capitalism is far more intense, precisely because there?s almost no social safety net An unhoused American child might still receive education and perhaps one meal a day,but support for housing, healthcare or transportation is nearly nonexistent
Entering an American store feels like reuniting with my oldest school friend:warm greetings, instant familiarity, genuine excitement (or so it seems) Walking into a shop here can feel jarringly cold by comparison "Why aren? t we best friends yet?"I've wondered Initially, like many American visitors,I interpreted this as British stuffiness or even pretentiousness Now, however,I realise it?s about respect for genuine connection over forced friendliness
When the Americans told King George III that we could manage without England?s support, the "We've got this?ethos became part of our DNA We opted for lower taxes, accepting less security in exchange for greater personal control Consequently, friendliness became a lifeline, our substitute safety net Every greeting, every smile, every free trial class is subtly transactional because our system itself is transactional
I've grown to appreciate precisely this lack of forced friendliness in England (and Portishead in particular) Connections here might take longer, but they feel real and relational rather than driven by potential gain A "taster session"isn't about immediate conversion; it's a genuine invitation to give something a try with no pressure to ?convert" While you might not greet me like we've known each other forever, when we do connect,it feels refreshingly genuine, less transactional and more meaningful

October sees the long-awaited and highly anticipated conclusion to Philip Pullman?s Book of Dust trilogy. In The Secret Commonwealth, readers left Lyra alone in the ruins of a deserted city, with Pantalaimon running off to search for her imagination, while loyal Malcolm is risking all to search for Lyra In The Rose Field their separate quests converge in the most breathtaking and dangerous ways
They say ?everyone has a book in them?and whilst that may be true to a certain extent, there?s a big difference between having a tale to tell and producing an interesting and engaging full blown novel or chronicle
The rise of self-publishing has transformed the landscape of the literary world, enabling countless authors to share their stories and insights without the constraints of traditional publishing houses As technology advances more writers are taking the leap into self-publishing This trend has gained significant momentum over the past decade and there are compelling reasons why aspiring authors are choosing this route Firstly writers don't need to find an agent or secure a contract with a traditional publishing house, allowing them immediate direct access to the market Self-publishing also allows authors more control over their work and can be more lucrative for them too
play In a market inundated with self-published titles, engaging a designer to craft an eye-catching book cover can make all the difference between a book being noticed and a book being overlooked Professional designers understand the nuances of typography, colour schemes, imagery and page elements that can significantly enhance a book's appeal
In addition to editing and design, self-published authors must also consider the importance of marketing and promotion While platforms provide the tools for self-publishing,authors need to actively promote their work to reach their target audience Engaging with readers through social media, author websites and book events can help build a loyal following, while networking with media personnel using press releases and electronic press packs can amplify an author's visibility and sales
While self-publishing presents numerous opportunities,it also comes with its challenges One aspect often overlooked is the importance of professional editing and design Many individuals believe that self-publishing is merely about writing (with the help of spell-check if we?re lucky) and uploading a manuscript, however, the success of a book hinges on its quality and presentation
Hiring a professional editor can provide a fresh perspective on a manuscript, identifying areas that need improvement, whether in terms of structure, pacing,or character development Self-editing can lead to blind spots, where authors overlook inconsistencies or errors that detract from the overall quality of the work A professional editor not only polishes the writing but also ensures consistencies and that the story resonates and engages with its intended audience
A professional designer also has a crucial role to
I self-published my first book in 2013 and have enjoyed helping others do the same.In addition to producing this lovely magazine,I work with many self-published authors who have chosen to invest in my professional editing services Some people just want to publish a book for their children, grandchildren or their family, while others want to make it available for readers around the world
My services extend to ghost-writing too, helping people turn their ideas, memories and expertise into well-written books, articles and blogs I can also help with website and social media content. If you feel I can help you, please do get in touch by emailing editor enjoyportishead@gm ail com
An African elephant at Noah?s Ark Zoo Farm just outside Portishead, has received specialist dental treatment to protect his tusk
Keepers recently spotted a small hole in the tip of Uli?s tusk during his daily health checks and to prevent further damage and protect his long-term tusk health, the zoo enlisted the expertise of specialist wildlife dentist Peter Kertesz
The dental team also checked on Janu,an older bull in the group, who recently snapped a tusk during a playful tussle with another elephant To protect the damaged tusk,Kertesz worked with the keepers to test specialist tools and agree on the best long-term care plan By keeping the tusk smoothed and sealed, the team can prevent further damage and safeguard Janu?s dental health for years to come
Uli and Janu are part of Noah?s Ark Zoo Farm?s bachelor group of African elephants Their 20-acre
habitat - the largest of its kind in the UKand Northern Europe - has been purpose-built to the highest welfare standards, ensuring the elephants receive the best possible care while also helping educate visitors about the pressures facing their wild counterparts

Idon? t know about you,but sometimes I just need somewhere quiet
Somewhere I can breathe, slow down and just be in the moment Recently I found exactly that at Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve on the edge Portishead
I have lived nearby for so long, but somehow I have never actually wandered through properly until now and honestly,it completely surprised me It?s one of those places that makes you stop, look around and think:?Wow, this is right on our doorstep!?
What makes this place even more special is its story Some of the Nature Reserve used to be part of the old power station grounds ? where waste from the power stations was dumped ? the area known as ?the Ashlands?was literally full of ash and industrial waste That area has been developed for housing and on the edge of the development is this beautiful,wildlife-rich reserve with wetlands, fields and winding trails, home to all sorts of wildlife such as otters, dragonflies and rare birds The space feels wild but calm, like nature?s just quietly doing its thing and you are lucky enough to witness it.
around the wetlands providing a circular route that traces the edge of the reserve While the entire reserve isn't paved, this well-marked,sustainable route provides access to the salt marsh, meadows and a few wooden hides that allow you to stop and peek through to see what birds and other wildlife are out, without disturbing them or frightening them away
While I was there, there were a few families out with little ones on bikes,a couple of birdwatchers with serious-looking cameras and some people walking quietly, just like me
As I head in to the reserve, which can be easily accessed from Sheepway,Wharf Lane, the marina or the Village Quarter, the first thing I notice is how peaceful it is - there is no traffic noise, barely any people and just the sound of birds and the breeze moving through the trees It instantly calmed my over-thinking brain There?s a proper path that loops
Whether you are walking the dog, catching up with a friend,or just need some solo time,Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve really suits every mood

Why your dog still needs a spa day in the cooler months by Bex Letts from The Country Canine
When temperatures start to drop and your pup?s coat fluffs up, it?s easy to assume grooming can take a back seat After all, that thick winter coat must be helping keep them warm right? Not necessarily While a dog?s coat does provide insulation, neglecting grooming during winter can do more harm than good
When fur becomes matted, it loses its insulating properties Instead of trapping warm air, mats create dense tangles that pull on the skin, trap moisture and cause discomfort
Regular grooming isn? t just about looks, it?s about health Mats can hide skin irritations, parasites and even injuries During damp walks tangled fur holds onto
moisture which can cause chafing, fungal growth, or bacterial infections
Clean, brushed coats, on the other hand, dry faster and keep skin healthy and irritation-free A winter groom doesn? t mean shaving your dog down to the skin, professional groomers adjust trims to maintain warmth while preventing tangles
And remember, it?s not only the coat that needs attention Winter walks can bring salt, grit, and de-icing chemicals that can irritate or burn paw pads
Groomers trim nails, tidy fur between toes and ensure paws are in top shape They?ll spot early signs of cracking pads or infectionsissues that can worsen if left unchecked
A GPsurgery in Portishead has raised £10,000 in voluntary contributions for important state-of-the-art equipment which will mean patients will no longer have to travel into Bristol or Weston for vital tests
Following a highly successful appeal, the Friends of Harbourside Family Practice (a Portishead medical centre based in Haven View) have raised £10,000 in less than a year,to fund the purchase of an ultrasound scanner for the surgery
A spokesperson for the Friends?group said:?This is a remarkable achievement made possible through a combination of individual donations via GoFundMe, direct contributions to the surgery, proceeds from cake sales, significant support from the Portishead Lions and a particularly generous donation from Neil Morgan of Port Marine Bathrooms We can? t thank everyone enough for their support ?
The scanner will be used for musculoskeletal investigations and will benefit patients registered at
Harbourside Family Practice It will facilitate faster diagnosis, enable more timely treatment and recovery and reduce the need for hospital visits, thereby easing pressure on local NHS services
The Friends of Harbourside are delighted with the outcome of this appeal and are already planning their next project Whilst the target has been reached to purchase the scanner, donations can still be made which will go towards future equipment to enhance the services at the practice You can donate via the Ultra Sound Scanner Appeal for Harbourside Family Practice on Go Fund Me

Why parents are now exploring childcare options before their baby is even born
With government funding for childcare starting at nine-months-old and so many families needing both parents to work, there has never been such high demand for childcare places
Many nurseries have waiting lists of 12-18 months and so planning ahead is crucial if you want to secure your first choice of childcare for when you make your return to work, even if that?s a year or more away.
be the last thing on your mind right now, however if you will be seeking outstanding childcare in the future it?s really important to get the wheels in motion now
Natalie Konarzewska, strategic manager at The Nursery in Portishead, said:?If you are awaiting the arrival of a little one, your return to work will probably
?Choosing childcare for your child is one of the biggest decisions parents ever make as you trust the provider with your most treasured possession Parents will want to choose a provider that aligns with their values regarding education and development. Feeling confident in your choice of childcare will help you feel more relaxed about going back to work too, even if it is a year away
?At The Nursery,we not only invite parents and carers seeking day care to visit us and see us in action,we also take time to support our future families during the pregnancy and the period between the birth and their return to work?
2026 will see the return of free Friday antenatal coffee mornings and also parent and baby groups at The Nursery
Natalie continued:?With the lack of midwife-led antenatal groups these days,parents-to-be can feel quite isolated,so we will be inviting parents who are expecting a baby and have registered with us,to come along and have a cup of tea or coffee with other people in the same situation; then when the babies come along,we invite our families to join us for parent and baby coffee mornings Our informal groups allow parents to make friends with others whose babies will be joining the nursery with theirs, as well providing an opportunity to ask members of our experienced team for advice We are also very happy to give parents and carers a break by holding baby while mum or dad enjoys their cuppa and a relaxed chat ?
:Rymasheuskaya
The team at The Nursery has never made any secret of the fact they always strive to go above and beyond when it comes to looking after the children in their care It is their aim to offer a home from home environment
Natalie continued:?Our nursery is rated outstanding by Ofsted,as are many other nurseries, however our aim is to always be outstanding in everything we do, not just make sure we are outstanding for an inspection To ensure our standards and delivery are always of the highest standard we engage an external inspector to monitor standards on a monthly basis?
The Nursery has been helping to create memorable childhoods since it first opened in 2015 Owned and run by childcare expert Jackie Hardie, who has more
than 25 years experience in early years education, The Nursery has been developed with passion and care Jackie?s experience running an early years consultancy, combined with years of running a busy reception class, means she has extremely high standards and expects the highest quality of care and education to be represented in her nursery,a vision supported by her outstanding nursery team Jackie said:?Our highly experienced and dedicated team creates a safe and nurturing environment where children explore, enquire, discover and thrive We provide childcare for babies from six weeks old up to preschool children Each day is packed with fun and imagination, with new friends to make and new skills to learn
?With waiting lists in place,we are currently taking bookings for September 2026,so even though returning to work seems a long way off,now is a good time to explore your childcare options and visit any nurseries you feel might be right for you We would love to show you around The Nursery, listen to your needs and expectations and explain to you what we can offer ?

SoleLution is a proud member of The Footwear Hub which offers the nation a place to learn and understand feet and footwear,in particular the importance of having correctly fitted shoes FITTED FOOTWEARMATTERS? FEETAREOURFOUNDATIONS,LET?SKEEPTHEM STRONG!
More than 20 years ago my husband and I had just returned home from our travels I was suitably inspired, refreshed and ready for a new challenge Unfortunately I didn? t have the least idea what I was going to do with my life! I knew that I wanted to run my own business and that I was interested in retailing but I was a long way from a definitive plan However, mothers always know best, don? t they? With one insightful observation my mother was about to change everything "There hasn? t been a shoe shop in Portishead for 25 years"she said.
I had found my SoleLution! Except that I hadn?t,at least not yet I had no shop and I knew nothing about shoe fitting But hey! I did know what I wanted to do and I was going to do it
Being the not so proud owner of wide feet I had always been frustrated by high street footwear but that was nothing compared to what I felt about the poor customer service that I had endured over the years It felt it could be time to kill two very annoying birds with one stone I trained as a shoe fitter and learnt everything I could about feet because if I was going to run a shoe shop then I was going to do it properly During my training the perfect premises became available and so just nine months after my epiphany,SoleLution opened its doors at 114 High Street
That was 20 years ago, although that barely seems possible, but I certainly made the right decision I had discovered what I was meant to do and I did it!
The success of our business allowed us to then move in to more central premises at 62 High Street Here I
have a fabulous team, all trained to measure feet and to fit shoes. They are all extremely passionate about their work SoleLution continues to deliver the same friendly service, to offer the right advice to our customers and to feature comfortable and stylish shoes that won? t break the bank I have evolved diverse collections for men, women and children which tick every box With shoes, boots, sandals, trainers, slippers, wellies and more,we have the perfect SoleLution for every occasion
from Africa
Tanya, her family and SoleLution are supporters of children at Jolaurabi School, situated in a vulnerable community in Kenya The school, set up by the charity Educate The Kids, offers young people a hand up through education, rather than a handout and Tanya has been taking second hand shoes donated by her customers to the pupils each year since 2018
Tanya and many local residents sponsor a child through primary school.Just £11a month, provides a child with books, uniform, pays exam fees and ensures they receive a good meal each school day
As SoleLution celebrates 20 years Tanya is launching an appeal to find 20 new sponsors, who will be making a huge difference to the lives of these children Anyone interested in sponsoring a child can do so at www educatethekids com / product/ support- a- child- 11/

Superstars of the 1980?s wrestling craze included some big names,Giant Haystacks,Big Daddy and of course Hulk Hogan. When you look back at these characters they were all indeed ?big?in every sense of the word Saturday night entertainment on TV was limited to four channels, and if you did ?the pools?you probably got an eyeful of big men in lycra while you waited for the football result! Yikes! Let's just say,a night out at the wrestling hadn? t made it to my bucket list until I had a chance encounter with John,an electrician friend of my husband,a friendly guy with a warm smile, who comes across as quiet and modest Imagine my surprise when hubby announced that John would be wrestling in Portishead the following weekend and we had tickets!
Saturday night arrived and my curiosity could have been mistaken for enthusiasm A quick drink at The Port and we made our way into Somerset Hall, where the atmosphere was thick with anticipation, music adding to the sound of chattering, laughing and families of all ages finding their way to their seats I even recognised a few familiar faces and some old friends in the audience
As the lights dimmed our umpire introduced the first competitors and as you would expect these guys put on a great show from the moment they appeared from behind the curtain! With the crowd cheering they climbed into the ring and with a good amount of theatre they snarled and egged on the spectators and then turned on each other Members of the audience were now clearly taking sides as these giants grappled and slammed each other to the ground Families became divided in their loyalties,as kids got excited - jumping out of their seats
Excitement in the audience became more infectious with every round; increasing each time a competitor was thrown from the ring, provoking thrilled fans Following the heavyweights came the tag team events ? double the excitement and double the drama The evening came to a close with the Lionesses who thrilled spectators with their take downs, half nelsons and cradle holds
If I told you who I was cheering for,I would give away my friend?s identity ? obviously I wasn? t cheering for John, but was it The Silverback,The Destroyer or maybe The Stallion? I would recommend you go along to the Somerset Hall on the 18th October and decide for yourself The British Kingdom Pro Wrestling team certainly put on a great evening of entertainment and tickets are on sale now

Many pubs have photo wallswalls that contain photographs of the venue from days gone by, shots of various events held at the venue,or of customers doing crazy things and sometimes even memorials for long-standing regulars who have passed It?s also not unusual for community minded pubs to host temporary exhibitions for local budding artists and photographers The ?Kicker Men?photography exhibition at the Black Horse (affectionately known as The Kicker to locals) in Clapton in Gordano, however, stands apart
This exhibition is a permanent fixture,it happened almost by accident and features the faces of well-known local characters, many of whom consider this old-world country inn their second home
What began with one black and white photo taken of Trev ?The Tree? Hall,by professional photographer and Kicker local Dave Pratt, soon blossomed in to a full exhibition which filled the stone walls of the inn?s family room, each face telling a story and sparking conversation from all who visit
They say every photo tells a story and that?s certainly true of each portrait in the Kicker Men photography exhibition Intimate photographs of faces etched with life, each one deep in character and personality; images that spark conversation among their audience, whether that?s regular customers or first time visitors
Photographer Dave Pratt explained how the exhibition came about He said:?My main motivation for producing the ?Kicker Men?exhibition was a bit of a vanity project to be honest For many years I have had a successful commercial career as a professional photographer, but I felt I wanted to do a personal project for myself without restrictions or limitations, rather than shooting images that are dictated to by briefs and client guidelines Historically photography is rooted in black and white portraiture so I felt I could produce a traditional set of images with a modern twist and as I was surrounded by naturally photogenic characters at my local,I thought it was a great opportunity to create a beautiful set of images that tell a story about some of the people who drink, work and frequent the pub There were already lots of images all over the walls and now mine sit among them,it?s great to be part of that rich history John Beynon, the landlord, was great and decided to lend the walls of the family room to the exhibition and what was supposed to be a temporary exhibition became a permanent feature ?
The Kicker Men exhibition reflects a deep-rooted appreciation for the individuals who have become
integral to the pub's identity It invites both locals and newcomers to engage with the history and camaraderie that define The Kicker As they explore the exhibition, guests are drawn into a narritive that celebrates the essence of community life, turning a simple visit to the pub into an enriching experience
In a world where connections can often feel fleeting, The Kicker Men exhibition stands as a testament to the importance of community and the stories that bind us together It encourages patrons not only to enjoy a drink, but to reflect on the rich tapestry of lives that pass and have passed through the pub's doors Everyone leaves this exhibition feeling the power of connection
You can see more of Dave?s work and find out more about him at www daveprattphotography co uk
Before the ladies among us start screaming:?How come it?s all about the men??Dave and John did ask some of the women in the Black Horse if they were interested in being photographed, the proviso being (as it was all about the character of the face) lines, wrinkles and all? no concealer or make-up Those invited, declined
Portishead Players kick off their new season with the comedy Duets by Peter Quilter and directed by Janet Astley
With the set planned and characters cast, the last thing the Players wanted was notification that the stage in Somerset Hall would be out of bounds for their first production due to a problem with the lighting rig above The budding thespians immediately put their collective heads together and came up with a solution, adapting the stage and lighting to create a new experience for actors and audience alike
A secretary with her boss on his birthday ? will she win him over with her charms? A divorcing couple on holiday together for the final time ? could they change their minds? And a bride about to be given away by her brother on her happy day ? or is it? Four couples - four crucial moments - how will they all work out?
Duets is a series of short plays depicting four couples each with their own challenging situations
A blind date ? how will they - or won? t they - get on?

Pilates is a form of physical exercise that focuses on strengthening the body's core muscles while also improving flexibility, posture, overall strength and balance,it involves slow, controlled, precise movements and a heightened awareness of breath to enhance body control and functionality.
Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century,Pilates has gained popularity in recent years as a beneficial form of exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels Beyond just toning muscles and improving flexibility,it also offers numerous benefits when it comes to injury prevention, overall health and balance.
One of the key benefits of Pilates is its focus on strengthening the body's core muscles The core muscles, including the abdominals, back and pelvic floor, provide stability and support during movement Strengthening these muscles through Pilates
exercises can reduce the risk of injury A strong core can also enhance posture, reduce back pain and improve balance Good balance is essential for preventing falls and injuries, especially as we age and Pilates can help individuals maintain and improve their balance through targeted exercises
In addition to core strengthening,Pilates also enhances flexibility and mobility in the body Flexibility plays a crucial role in maintaining proper alignment and preventing injury Tight muscles can lead to imbalances and strain on the body, but incorporating Pilates into a regular exercise routine can increase range of motion, prevent joint stiffness and reduce risk of injury
Mind-body connection is another key focus of Pilates. The practice emphasises proper breathing techniques and concentration on each movement to develop a greater awareness of the body and how it moves By honing in on proper form and technique during Pilates exercises, individuals not only enhance posture and alignment but also improve their overall balance.
Pilates can positively impact overall health and wellbeing too Regular Pilates practice can improve cardiovascular fitness, increase muscle tone and boost energy levels The low-impact nature of Pilates makes it gentle on the joints, making it suitable for those with arthritis or joint conditions The controlled
movements and focus on alignment in Pilates can also provide relief and improvement for individuals with chronic conditions such as lower back pain or neck pain, contributing to their overall quality of life
Overall,Pilates offers a holistic approach to injury prevention, general health and balance By strengthening the core muscles, improving flexibility, increasing mind-body awareness and enhancing balance,Pilates can help individuals reduce their risk of injury, improve their overall health and well-being and maintain stability and control in their movements Whether seeking to improve posture, increase flexibility, enhance fitness levels,or simply promote better balance, incorporating Pilates into your exercise routine can offer a range of benefits for your health and overall wellbeing
At Walnut Grove,we offer a variety of Pilates classes to suit all needs; from one-to-one tuition to friendly group sessions We're also excited to introduce a new early morning class with Gemma
If you would like to find out more about how Pilates can support your health or to find the right class for you,do get in touch Call us on 01275 818303 or pop in to the clinic

Life can sometimes feel like being on a journey without a map, busily walking forward, but not always sure of the destination Many people find themselves moving through each day without a clear sense of where they are heading, but gaining direction does not mean having every answer in advance; it means creating clarity about what matters to you and what you want to move toward
Direction begins with self-awareness Taking time to reflect on your values, your strengths and your priorities allows you to understand what truly motivates you. When you know what is important, decision-making becomes easier and more purposeful Instead of feeling pulled in many directions by outside influences, you start to create a path that feels authentic to you
Another key step is setting goals These don? t have to be huge or overwhelming; even small, achievable goals can provide a sense of progress. Each step
builds confidence and shows you that change is possible Sometimes the path changes and that?s okay What matters is that you remain aligned with what feels meaningful to you
With direction comes focus, motivation and resilience and you begin to feel more in control of your choices Life may still bring challenges, but with a sense of direction you navigate them with greater clarity and confidence Ultimately, gaining direction is about living intentionally and creating a future your present self will thank you for

Well, here it is,autumn! That wonderful time of year when the days get shorter, the air gets crisper and teenagers suddenly remember they have a bedroom For parents,it's an annual challenge:how to transform a space that's often a chaotic jumble into a haven that's both stylish and functional without breaking the bank Let's be honest, their bedroom is their kingdom and it needs to serve many purposes So,here are a few thoughts to help you and them create an autumnal sanctuary that's as cool as they are.
A teenager's room isn't just for sleeping It's a study,a cinema, a music studio and a coffee shop all rolled into one The key here is zoning A small, but sturdy, desk is non-negotiable for homework, but it doesn't need to be a monstrosity Look for one with clever storage and cable hiding ability If you allow a screen in their room, this can be wall mounted above the desk to save space
To create a space for friends to hang out,a couple of floor cushions or beanbags would be a practical idea and consider adding hoops so that they can be hung up when not in use

Natural light is wonderful for concentration,so encourage them to open those curtains! For the evenings, lighting is crucial Overhead lighting can be too harsh,so consider a selection of lamps, starting with a desk lamp, essential for studying To add some fun, fairy lights and LED strips are a teenager's best friend They're inexpensive and instantly add a warm and cosy glow I'd recommend red-toned light in the evenings; these are less disruptive to sleep patterns than blue light, which can mess with their circadian rhythm So,think warm white or even a gentle red hue for those pre-bedtime scrolls and late-night reading 2.
We all know how important keeping up with the latest trend is to our mini-adults,so a few simple touches can make all the difference Allow them to create their own wall art, maybe graffiti onto a large canvas,a chalk wall,or hang items that reflect their interests like skateboards art, without the hefty price tag! For a splash of colour and texture, update their bedding with a chunky throw or a new set of cushions To free up floor space,I would suggest shelving to display their favourite items, maybe sports or music related,or even their favourite trainers! Remember,it's about creating a space that feels like them,on a budget that feels like you Happy decorating!
I?m Robert Nagle with 30 years of property experience in Bristol,26 years of life in Portishead and I am now proud to bring Nested Estate Agents to our town I?ve raised my family here,I know the community well and I?m ready to help you sell with confidence
ISNOW A GOOD TIMETO SELL?
Yes Portishead?s property market is steady and lively with 371homes sold last year, prices up 218%,214 homes currently on the market and 153 already sold subject to contract It?s the kind of market where a well-prepared home gets snapped up quickly, not quite overnight, but certainly quicker than it takes to find a parking space by the marina on a sunny Sunday
natural charm to help your home stand out With the local average property sitting at £416,000 (July 2025), my aim is to position your property so it?s competing at the higher end, because a good sale is about more than just a ?For Sale?board
HOW LONG WILLIT TAKETO SELL?
The average Portishead home sells in 66 days (subject to contract) With the right pricing and presentation, many move faster My goal is to make sure your ?For Sale?board doesn? t outstay its welcome on your front lawn, think weeks, not seasons
DO YOU REALLY NEED AN ESTATEAGENT?
Some try without, however selling your own home is a bit like baking bread from scratch - possible, but a lot trickier than it looks. With more than three decades in property and two decades here in Portishead,I?ll guide the process, smooth the bumps and negotiate firmly on your behalf
ROBERT?SQUICK TIPSFORSELLERS
- Declutter - help buyers picture their own lives, not yours
WHAT?STHEBIGGEST MISTAKESELLERS MAKE?
Overpricing or under-preparing Your first fortnight online is critical - too high a price and buyers quietly move on; too little effort and the listing fall flat A little staging, fresh paint,or de-cluttering can make all the difference and I?ll happily guide you on what matters most (and what doesn?t)
HOW TO GET THEBEST PRICE
First impressions matter I combine professional photography, thoughtful marketing and Portishead?s
- Kerb appeal - a tidy front garden says ?welcome? before the front door even opens
- Get valued - a free appraisal gives you the knowledge you need to move forward
- Small fixes - new paint or updated lighting makes a bigger impact than you might think
READYTO SELL?
Please contact me; I?ll be delighted to help My approach is straightforward, professional and designed to make moving home a little less stressful (and maybe even a little enjoyable)
Whilst the gardening year is drawing to an end, there are still things to do in the garden Now is an ideal time to plant evergreens which can provide some interest and structure to the garden Sarcococca and Daphne have lovely glossy green leaves and have the added benefit of beautiful fragrant flowers
If you have not already done it,you need to lift tender species like begonias, cannas and dahlias before the first frosts arrive Cut back the stems and lift the tubers from the ground, clean the soil off and store in trays of dry compost or sand and store in a frost free place
You should prune climbing and rambling roses if they have finished flowering,to avoid any wind damage and clear up fallen rose leaves to help to reduce the
incidence of black spot-on next year's flowers Now is also a good time to apply a mulch to your borders to insulate the plants from the winter cold and wet
Large pots can add some interest to the garden over the autumn I have a lovely one (pictured) and have also planted up an evergreen pot with a fatsia japonica, ivy and cyclamen
Oh and don? t forgetnow is the time to plant up your spring bulbs

Halloween lanterns and a wholesome meal for all the family
If you are carving a pumpkin with the children to make a lantern this Halloween, don? t forget to use the insides too! Using the flesh for a classic, super easy to make, delicious pumpkin soup ensures the whole of the pumpkin is used and none of it goes to waste
Kids love to cook so why not extend the Halloween activities and get them involved in the cooking too? The result will be a wholesome tasty meal for all the family, full of minerals, fibre and vitamin C and the lantern could make a fantastic table decoration!
Here?s a quick and easy pumpkin soup recipe, kept simple, just as nature intended The onion and garlic are definitely the secret ingredients to make your pumpkin soup tastier, although I have to admit I like to add a veggie oxo or two and a slug of wine to mine!
Ingredients
Flesh of medium pumpkin with seeds removed, cut into large chunks
Four cloves garlic
One large onion - chopped
One tbs olive oil
One litre stock ? vegetable or chicken
Ground pepper
Pinch salt
Optional milk, cream or butter to stir in at the end
Method
Heat oil in sturdy pan
Add onion and garlic, cook until soft and golden
Add pumpkin and stock, bring to boil, simmer until tender; remove from heat, blend until smooth
Add cream, milk or butter; season to taste and garnish with parsley, cream or both
They say variety is the spice of life and if you?ve made a big pot of soup you might like to change things up a bit for some servings by adding other flavours!
Here are a few suggestions:
Lightly spiced ? stir in half a teaspoon each of cumin, coriander and smoked paprika
A hint of curry ? stir in a touch of curry powder, adding a little at a time to suit your taste
Spicy kick ? add a pinch of red pepper flakes
Herby ? add fresh herbs or dried herbs such as basil, thyme, oregano,or marjoram
Turmeric ? pop in half a teaspoon each of ground turmeric and coriander and a quarter of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper
Bread is a classic accompaniment to soup for most people, but it's not your only option
If you are choosing bread,a nice chunk of crusty bread always goes down well, however, salads or roasted vegetables can also make great sides for your soup,or try smashed potatoes, sweet potato fritters or fried advocados
You can jazz up your bowl of soup by adding tasty toppings too There are so many to choose, here are a handful:homemade croutons, toasted pumpkins seeds,a swirl of cream or dollop of sour cream, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, honey, crumbled bacon or unsweetened coconut flakes

Last month Portishead Porters transported their 50,000th patient, a massive achievement for this small local transport group
Founded in 1993, The Porters as they are affectionately known, are a group of volunteers who have been taking patients to their hospital and clinic appointment in Bristol and North Somerset for 32 years
There are currently 41 drivers who use their own cars to collect patients from their homes, take them to their appointment and bring them home afterwards The volunteers give their time for free, the only cost to the patient is a mileage charge to cover the running costs of the car
Mike Tandy, who has been a volunteer driver with The Porters for 15 years, said: ?I really enjoy meeting the local people when I take them to their various appointments
Al-Hassan joined staff and union representative to hand out leaflets, talk to shoppers about the issues shop workers can face and highlight the campaign
Sometimes we have a real chin wag and put the world to rights! People are very grateful for the service we provide and it?s a great feeling to know you have helped someone out ?
Portishead Porters are always looking for new drivers If you have a few hours free each week, enjoy meeting people and would like to volunteer, please contact Sue Ferguson on 07990 624928 for more information
