Portishead residents have celebrated the opening of a new Post Office in the town at long last!
Long-serving postmaster Rishiv Vij and his brother-in-law, Dillip Potiwal, who are both experienced retailers, were joined by local MPSadik Al-Hassan,town and district councillors and Post Office regional manager Lynn Lewis for the official opening of the new Post Office within a new Costcutter store at 50 High Street The occasion marked the return to the community of Post Office services that have been missing since the previous branch at 29-31High Street closed in January 2023,due to the closure of the McColl?s shop where the Post Office had been based
As he cut the ribbon and declared the new Post Office open,Mr Al-Hassan said:?This news has been eagerly awaited by residents of Portishead Access to services like these are vital for communities across North Somerset and crucial for maintaining the health of our high streets The refurbished shop looks fantastic and in time it will undoubtedly become a real treasure of the local area I?m sure I speak on behalf of the whole town when I say thank you to Rishiv and Dilip for investing in our community ?
Rishiv, who was a Postmaster in Easton,Bristol, for 17 years, said:?It took us a while to find suitable premises to re-open Portishead Post Office When we heard that Boots was closing we knew this location, which is close to where Portishead Post Office had been before, would work as there was also retail space for a large convenience store and there?s great parking close-by
?People have been very keen for a Post Office in Portishead again as they have had to travel from the town to outlying villages and areas Whilst we were
doing work to get the shop ready,we had had lots of people coming to see the progress and to thank us
?Two Portishead residents,Lucy and Dan,who have been working at another Post Office, have transferred to work at the Portishead branch
?There?s only one bank left in Portishead, but our Post Office is where businesses and residents can do their everyday banking There?s also a full range of foreign currency available on demand Dillip and I are both community-minded and we are looking to supporting clubs and organisations within the community ?
The new facility has three Post Office counters, two full-screened and an open-plan counter alongside the retail counter of the convenience store
The full-screen counters offer the full range of services and are open Monday to Saturday 9am-5 30pm The Post Office counter alongside the retail counter of the convenience store will be open daily from 8am?10pm,providing 98 hours of Post Office services a week
The new Costcutter store, which hosts the new Post Office,is also a stockist of Enjoy Portishead!

If someone had told me 15 years ago that I would be involved in professional sport as a broadcaster I would have laughed in their face, but here I am today doing exactly that in addition to my work at ITV West Country News
Becoming a sports broadcaster happened purely by accident for me The boss at JACKFM,the radio station I was working at as a presenter, came over to me early one morning to tell me our regular sports show presenter was taking a three-week holiday and I was to cover him whilst he was away ?I know nothing about sport?I protested, but apparently due to budget constraints and the fact I was on a salary rather than a day rate, that didn? t seem to matter ?
had scored rather than Gavin HENSON
Showing my age there - ouch!
Next came football
Because I?d now been taken on as a second full-time presenter at the rugby, when Bristol City?s legendary announcer David Lloyd retired, they offered me the job It was great cross promotion for me and for my radio show
and I discovered there?s no adrenalin rush better than walking out in front of 27,000 people, especially if the team you work for happen to beat Manchester United that night If you know ? you know
Three weeks later we got a phone call from the presenter on holiday, saying he was rather enjoying Mexico, his destination of choice and he wouldn? t be coming back So that was it,I was told I was staying on the show permanently and Ian Downs the sports broadcaster was born!
Presenting a radio sports show involved attending various sports club press conferences and interviewing our local sports stars each week I got to know the media teams well and because of that my first foray into stadium announcing came one New Year?s Day when the regular guy at Bristol Bears rugby match was away - ?Of course you can do it,it?s just like being on the radio?they exclaimed Well apart from the fact that everyone can see me,oh and I still don? t really know anything about sport ? ?Yes,I really did once announce that Gavin HASTINGS
The stadium announcing turned into sports TV presenting, mainly due to Covid when we started streaming games online and Robins TV was born If City were at home I?d be hosting in the stadium bowl and for away games I?d be the anchor presenter for Robins TV that day
However along with all the highs came some pretty horrid lows Whilst I was working hard to learn on the job,I wasn? t a natural and made some fairly rooky mistakes along the way I soon learnt that football fans aren? t the most forgiving and on one occasion I remember there being a 17-page article on the Bristol City fan?s forum about how terrible I was! Your skin thickens as the seasons go by,but I have to say some of it was pretty nasty I ended up moving away from some platforms just to avoid it and protect my mental health
After eight wonderful seasons my football presenting came to an end and for me it was a little bittersweet I?d loved rising to the challenge,I loved the
atmosphere of the games in the stadium but really didn? t enjoy the politics and darker side of football social media that came with it
I still continue my match day presenting duties for Bristol Bears which is an altogether different atmosphere and something I really enjoy I?ve now swapped my football match days to produce TV outside broadcasts for topflight basketball matches It?s inside, much warmer,it?s fast and there?s less abuse online!
So that?s how my sports presenting came about and where it?s taken me I?m all for grabbing opportunities when they come my way and I?ve learned so much
Would I change any of it? Not a bit As Pat Lam the director of rugby at Bristol Bears says: ?We never win or lose ? we win or learn?

When I first moved to England,I didn? t understand why restaurant service was so slow compared to where I?m from in Washington DC
In America, speed is everything Servers move fast because they have to In most places, they earn about £2 an hour before tips - not even enough to cover taxes
If they want to pay rent, they need to hustle Hard Every extra table turned over, every extra tip earned, might mean the difference between keeping the lights on or falling behind
My sister Lisa was one of those hustlers That was the highest compliment you could give someone:?She?s a hustler ?It always made me so proud of her
In America, being called a ?hustler?means you?re hardworking, ambitious, someone who can make things happen against the odds In the UKhowever, ?hustle?carries a different tone - it suggests being pushy, shady,or cutting corners to get ahead It?s not admired in the same way
The same word reflects two very different cultures: one where survival depends on constant motion and another where moving too fast can be seen as suspect
At first, the slower pace of service in Portishead frustrated me I was used to being the customer, the boss, the person paying someone?s salary with my tip
In the US,food, healthcare and even housing are tied to how fast and how hard you can work If you slow down, you risk losing everything The customer is your boss for an hour or so As a server,it?s your job to please the customer no matter what,or they will withhold your pay
But here, servers earn a fair wage
They don? t have to run on adrenaline and gratitude to survive and it really does show in their speed and attitude Servers work for the restaurant, not the customer,so they can have a migraine,a sprained ankle,a hard day - and move at their own pace without risking their livelihood
That shift changes everything
Instead of measuring a meal by how quickly the check arrives,I find myself sinking so much more into conversations I focus on the people at my table
I?m not just ?buying?a meal and renting someone?s smile for an hour - I?m sharing space and time with others, trusting that we all matter equally whether we?re serving or being served
Living here has made me realise how deeply capitalism shaped my expectations back home It?s lonely to race through life believing everyone is on their own, that every interaction is a transaction It?s powerful to slow down and remember:community isn? t built in a rush
If the service is slow, good It means someone doesn? t have to hustle today just to survive It means I can take my time too

We often feature Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve in Enjoy Located between Portishead and Royal Portbury Dock it?s a vast open space nestled between housing and industry that includes everything from salt marshes, wetlands and bird hides to nature trails and a whole host of vibrant wildlife
This month I have opted for a short walk in the reserve (accompanied by my niece Leanne) with easy access from on road parking and flat, easy under foot paths, making it easily accessible for those with mobility issues, wheelchairs, prams and pushchairs
Within seconds of parking in Fennel Road,in the Village Quarter,we pass through the gate leading in to the reserve and are immediately immersed in the serene beauty of the natural world A carpet of green stretches out before us,interspersed with tall grasses swaying in the breeze and patches of wildflowers bursting forth in splashes of colour To our left is a large pond with its still, reflective waters mirroring the sky and surrounding flora As we stroll along the path, still not even a minute from the roadside, the soothing sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves are interrupted only by the occasional hiss from swans emerging from the pond, warning passers-by not to go too near to the cygnets they are protecting
A few metres on,the path forks and we take a right, crossing over a sturdy wooden footbridge where the scenery shifts slightly to include small trees and bushes and we note the air is fragrant with the earthy scent of damp soil We stop to read an information board telling us in detail about the
wildlife we are surrounded by
The old railway line is visible on our right and we see a bridge ahead which is the road bridge on Sheepway passing over the railway line My geography and sense of direction have never been great and I am taken completely by surprise at how we have already arrived at Sheepway!
Leanne and I had agreed a short walk so we turn back and retrace our steps, meeting many dog walkers on our way We have been less than half an hour, but feel refreshed and as if we?ve had a real trip out in the countryside!
For those who want a longer walk, the well-maintained paths of the reserve meander through many diverse environments from woodlands and grasslands to wetlands and marshes, drawing your attention to the vibrant life that thrives in this sanctuary
In addition to its natural charm, the reserve promotes conservation and education, encouraging visitors to engage with the environment responsibly Whether you are seeking solitude, family time,or a chance to connect with nature,Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve is a perfect destination for a refreshing walk in the great outdoors

Today Vaughn Coles is at the helm of a fifth generation traditional fam ily- run business, but did he always want to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather before him ?
Thomas Coles founded a haulage business in 1895 at 62 High Street, later run by his son George who also took on vehicle maintenance and repair George had Tudor Garage built at its current location of 51High Street in 1955 and in 1960 it became the first motor garage in Portishead to carry out the new compulsory vehicle MOTtesting
When George retired his son Brian and brother-in-law Robert took over Brian's nephew, Martin Petty, joined in 1972 and in 1980 Brian's son Vaughn started his apprenticeship When Brian retired Vaughn and Martin ran the business together until Martin retired in 2017
Today the business is run by directors Vaughn Coles, his wife Jane and their son Joe; their younger son Luke,is now a mechanic and also works with them
This business is a real family affair, but was running the family firm what Vaughn always wanted?
From an early age Vaughn Coles knew there would always be an opportunity to work in the family business but did he realise he?d be running it himself one day?
Tracey Fowler talked to Vaughn to find out
DID YOU ALWAYSKNOW YOU WOULD GO IN TO THEFAMILY FIRM, TUDORGARAGE, ORDID YOU HAVEANYOTHER ASPIRATIONS?
I once wanted to be a carpenter but I think mechanics must be in my blood because I was always getting in to trouble for taking things apart to discover how they worked As a teenager I did a bit of gardening for people and if their mower broke I?d be delighted to tinker with it and fix it more often than not It started to dawn on me then, that actually mechanics might be more ideal for me than carpentry
AT WHAT AGEDID YOU JOIN THEBUSINESSAND AS WHAT?
As soon as I?d had my 16th birthday, despite a few run-ins with teachers over it,I was out of school! I had an apprenticeship waiting for me and I couldn? t wait By then I knew I wanted to one day run the family business,so I left school at the earliest opportunity and embarked on a five year motor mechanic apprenticeship
SO YOU BECAMEA FULLY FLEDGED MECHANIC, BUT SURELYTHERE?SSO MUCH MORETO RUNNING THE BUSINESSTHAN FIXING CARS?
I love being a mechanic but got lots of business advice from those working with me,especially Martin and my dad of course Talking to customers and giving the best service possible was ingrained in me because that?s what Tudor Garage always did and still does, pride itself on Managing the workload came naturally to me too I just picked up the business side of things as I went and as a matter of course, however having a good back up team like
my wife and Joe?s fiancée, Rhianna, working on the admin is important for the smooth running of things
IFYOU HAD YOURTIMEOVER WOULD YOU CHANGE ANYTHING?
No I don? t think I?d change anything at all
DO YOU HAVEANY ADVICEFOR SOMEONEINTERESTED IN BECOMING A MECHANIC?
Be prepared to work hard,be willing to keep up-to-date with all the changes that occur regularly these days when it comes to mechanics and make sure don? t mind getting your hands dirty!
DO YOU HAVEANY ADVICEFORANYONEWHO IS EXPECTED TO JOIN THEIRFAMILY- RUN BUSINESS?
Just be sure your heart is in it and you?re not getting involved just to please other people There's a lot of pride and pleasure to be had from taking over a family business but only if you enjoy the work

As a resident of Portishead you must have driven past the signs as you enter the town stating that we are twinned with Schweich an der Mosel in Germany and Den Dungen in the Netherlands?
Portishead has had an active twinning association for more than 30 years and 2024 saw residents of Portishead visit Schweich, for their annual wine festival in August,as well as welcoming visitors here from Den Dungen in October
what a different country is really like (residents are hosted by twinning families rather than in hotels),it also provides an opportunity to experience the culture and language
Prior to our most recent trip to Schweich several members held a regular get together in order to improve their German language skills ? as a result I ended up delivering a speech in German to a marquee hosting several hundred residents of Schweich ? which was greatly appreciated by our hosts in Germany
Each visit is planned in advance to ensure that visitors gain the best appreciation of all our town has to offer,as well as organising tours to more far flung attractions Over the years many strong friendships have been formed between ?twinners?and often visits are made outside our planned twinning visits
As time has gone by the original members, who established the Portishead Twinning Association, have given way to younger members who are keen to carry forward the traditions that have been established Not only is it a great way of finding out
Over the past couple of years we have taken our guests to local attractions such as Oakham Treasures,Slimbridge and St Fagans
On our latest travels to Schweich we enjoyed their Wine Festival weekend in the town so there was a lot to see,do and taste As well as the Wine Festival itself (with music, large marquees and even more wine) there was a parade through the town with local organisations from the town and surrounding region really making an effort to interest spectators and passed by in a combination of tractors, cars and on foot, accompanied by marching bands (and more wine) similar to the carnival we will be having in Portishead later this month Our final day saw us visit the ancient Roman town of Trier where there are still significant buildings from the period
This was followed by a boat trip on the river Moselle These kinds of thing, together with guided tours, are all culturally enriching experiences
When our visitors from Den Dungen came here in October we were able to give them a guided tour of the Sculpture Trail in Portishead, which concluded with us all posing for a group photograph on the Den Dungen Bridge on Harbour Road Did you know there is also a Schweich Bridge on Phoenix Way? And in Schweich there is a Portishead roundabout!
The Portishead Twinning Association committee chair,Ros Cruse, who has organised many of the twinning visits, said:?Twinning is a very positive experience and although it has been difficult maintaining interest after the challenges of the pandemic, the concept of twinning and enthusiasm for welcoming guests from overseas to our town is still very much alive in Portishead "
As you can see from the photos taken over the years, that accompany this article, many of us have had a great time, made some wonderful friends and we look forward to more twinning adventures Perhaps you?d like to join us?
If you would like to know more about Portishead twinning, please contact the group?s secretary Steve Pratt by emailing stevepratt1@gmailcom or take a look at our Facebook page at https:/ / www facebook com / groups / 255138340705124
In the late 1980's a number of like minded members of the Portishead community felt the town could benefit by widening its horizons with regards to Europe Contacts already existed with both the Netherlands and Germany The former was brought about by local resident Dan Griffiths who,as a glider pilot during the Second World War was shot down during Operation Market Garden en route to Arnhem He was shielded by the people of Den Dungen and District, thus avoiding capture and imprisonment The latter arose through a local wine merchant?s links with the municipality of Schweich-an-der-Mosel and its renowned vineyards Following negotiations and reciprocal visits both to and from our prospective twin towns, formal twinning charters were exchanged with Den Dungen in 1989 and later with Schweich in 1992
Childcare expert Jackie Hardie, owner of The Nursery in Portishead and her strategic manager Natalie Konarzewska, provide some useful tips to help holidays with small children run smoothly
Holidays with babies and young children can be somewhat challenging, but careful planning can ease the stress so that your holiday is a great experience for all the family
Whether you?re travelling by car or plane, make sure you have plenty of healthy snacks for the journey ? avoid sweetsno-one wants a sugar rush in a packed car or on a crowded plane!
If you?re flying, make sure you keep your baby carrier with you once you?ve handed in the stroller with the luggage,it?s always handy when waiting around and you may need both hands to grab the passports, boarding passes etc.You should be able to take as much formula/water for bottles as you need when you fly, this should not affect the amount of liquid you are permitted to take onboard
When making a long car journey think ahead and plan some stops to allow everyone to stretch their legs, get some fresh air and use the loo
During takeoff and landing ensure your baby or small child is breastfeeding, sucking a bottle or dummy,or sipping water This will enable the pressure to be equalized in their ears
Use easy and engaging activities on the journey to encourage language development and bondingcolour hunt and eye spy are always popular For toddlers and young children an easy to grab sticker book is a great fine motor skill development activity that can keep little ones occupied during car and plane journeys Other easy options are books and mark making using crayons and pencils, keeping those little hands busy before hopefully taking a nap
Whether you are staying in the UKor travelling overseas for your holiday, thinking ahead can make the holiday easier for everyone
Familiarity is so important to babies and young
children, especially when sleeping To help your child sleep well on holiday, pack the sheet they slept on the night before you leave Familiar smells and textures are important to ensure a good night sleep
If your child is used to sleeping in darkness and the holiday bedroom does not provide a black out blind effect, use tin foil It may not look great at your window but it is an amazing black out blind Simply dampen the window and the foil will stick It provides almost 100%black out
Make sure you keep your little ones in the shade as much as possible and use sunscreen at all times
Allow extra time! Don? t put yourself under pressure to meet impossible deadlines from flights and excursions to mealtimes and activities Everyday life involves so much rushing around; this is your holiday and you all deserve some relaxation so make sure you give yourselves plenty of time to get to and from places
If you feel unsure about anything when planning your holiday don? t be afraid to ask the experts; your doctor or health visitor can advise on health issues, airlines can help with their rules and regulations and a call to your resort or accommodation owner could prove helpful
Happy holidays!

Sit-to-stand exercises are a simple yet powerful way for individuals to maintain and improve their strength, balance and independence.
As we age, muscle mass naturally declines, particularly in the lower body Sit-to-stand exercises target key muscle groups such as the quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes, helping to preserve strength and stability Regular practice improves balance and coordination and can also enhance cardiovascular health and circulation, especially when done in sets or as part of a routine Since they require no special equipment and can be done at home, they are accessible to most people Just a few repetitions daily, sitting on a chair and then standing can build confidence in mobility and contribute to overall physical and mental well-being
Sit-to-stand movements also support joint flexibility and incorporating sit-to-stand exercises into a regular routine is a practical step toward healthier ageing
At Walnut Grove Wellbeing CIC we hold regular sessions exploring exercises that can help keep you strong and independent We are here to help in any way we can,so please feel free to drop us an email at contact@walnutgrovewellbeingcic com for more information or call us on 01275 818303
Portishead counsellor and cognitive hypnotherapist Trina Gazzard looks at how therapy can help you claim your peace
Being in a relationship with a narcissist can feel like emotional whiplash - moments of charm and intensity followed by confusion, criticism and manipulation Narcissists often crave admiration and control, making relationships revolve around their needs while eroding their partner?s sense of self Gas lighting,blame-shifting and a lack of empathy are common, leaving their partners doubting their own perceptions and worth
Over time, this dynamic can be emotionally exhausting Partners may feel isolated, constantly walking on eggshells to avoid conflict or criticism The narcissist?s ability to twist narratives can make it hard to identify the root of the problem, often leaving their partner feeling responsible for the dysfunction
If this resonates with you, know that awareness is the first step toward change.Boundaries are vitallearning to say no without guilt, protecting your energy and seeking support can begin the process
of healing Therapy can be life-changing,helping you untangle emotional conditioning and rebuild confidence
Living with a narcissist is challenging, but reclaiming your peace is possible You deserve a relationship rooted in respect, empathy and emotional safety Don? t underestimate the power of small steps toward freedom? they lead to profound, lasting transformation

When heading into the weights section at the gym, have you got a specific goal in mind? Are you looking to improve your endurance, strength or muscle mass?
Did you know that it?s your rep (repetition) range, the number of sets you do and length of your rest intervals that dictate what adaptations your body makes?
For a lot of people sessions are made up of three sets,12 reps and a guess at how much rest to take
As a sports rehab and massage therapist,in addition to treating injury and assisting with rehabilitation,I help people improve their performance, avoid injury and get the very best out of their training and exercise routines
Let's take a look at each adaptation and what we need to do to achieve our goals
The primary goal of endurance training is to improve the ability of muscles to perform sustained contractions over a long period It?s ideal for activities such as running, cycling and swimming Endurance training involves a high number of repetitions with lighter weights The typical rep range is 12-20+ reps per set, aiming to complete 3-5 sets The focus should be maintaining form and control throughout
the set
The rest intervals for endurance training are generally shorter to keep the muscles under a level of continuous fatigue since endurance training emphasises sustained performance Rest intervals would typically be 30-60 seconds, allowing some recovery but maintaining some fatigue
The primary goal here is to increase the maximum amount of force a muscle can generate. This type of training is generally pursued by athletes who need to lift the heaviest possible weights, such as power lifters or those taking part in strength sports The focus of this training is lifting heavy but for fewer repetitions A typical rep range is 1-5 reps, aiming to perform 3-6 sets Unlike endurance training, the amount of weight being lifted needs to be high. The weight being used needs to be 85%or more of your one-rep max (1RM),that is how much weight you are able to lift once Due to the high intensity of the reps the rest intervals for maximal strength training is much higher, anywhere from 2-5 minutes between sets to allow near full recovery of the muscles to ensure each set is performed with maximum effort
The purpose of this is muscle growth and to increase muscle size This approach aims to create an optimal environment for muscle fibres to grow larger in response to mechanical tension, metabolic stress and muscle damage Hypertrophy is a middle ground between endurance and maximal strength training, striking a balance of weight lifted and
Endurance 12- 20+ reps 3- 5
volume of work, promoting muscle growth without pushing the body as far as maximal strength training A typical rep range is 6-12 and aiming to complete 3-6 sets with the percentage of your 1RM being between 65%and 85% The rest between sets is more similar to endurance training 60-90 seconds rest maintains an elevated level of fatigue while still allowing the muscle enough time to recover to continue performing at a high level
than 60% Muscle stamina (strength) Maximal strength 1- 5 reps 3- 6 85%+
Maximal force output
Hypertrophy 6- 12 reps 3- 6 65%- 85%
Whether you're aiming to increase muscle size, improve endurance,or develop maximal strength, understanding the differences between each training type and then adjusting your rep ranges, set structures and rest intervals will help you optimise your results and ultimately help make the most of
Muscle growth (size)

Most people think of oral hygiene as simply keeping a bright smile and fresh breath, but what if the health of your gums could affect your heart, blood sugar and even your longevity? Emerging research suggests that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease,is not just about dental health; it?s deeply intertwined with overall systemic health
Gum disease begins with plaque,a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth and inflames the gums Left unchecked, this inflammation can evolve into periodontitis,a severe form of gum disease where infection can spread to the bones supporting the teeth But the consequences don? t stop there Scientists have uncovered startling links between gum disease and serious conditions like heart disease and diabetes
Inflamed gums can release harmful bacteria and inflammatory markers into the bloodstream These bacteria can trigger chronic inflammation,a known contributor to heart disease Studies suggest that individuals with gum disease are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular issues such as clogged arteries, high blood pressure and even stroke
For those living with diabetes, the connection is even stronger High blood sugar levels can worsen gum disease by impairing the body's ability to fight infections Conversely, gum disease can make it harder to regulate blood sugar, setting off a vicious cycle that complicates diabetes management
PROTECTING
The good news?
Gum disease is largely preventable.Daily brushing and flossing, regular dental check-ups and a balanced diet can all support healthy gums and reduce the risk of systemic complications Simple
habits like quitting smoking and managing stress also help lower inflammation in the body, including the gums
Your mouth is more than just a gateway to food; it's a window into your overall wellbeing By prioritising gum health, you're not just saving your smile - you?re protecting your heart, blood sugar and long-term health So the next time you reach for your toothbrush, remember:a little care for your gums could mean a healthier future
At Lime Tree Dental Practice we are here to help you keep your gums healthy and your smile at its very best smile Contact us today to schedule a consultation

This month we can expect to see nature blooming in all its glory - filling borders and containers with colour and fragrance This is the time to nurture your flowers, fruit and vegetables, which involves keeping the garden well watered, well fed and removing dead flowers as soon as they go over to encourage more to follow
It's not too late for the ?Chelsea Chop?,which means cutting back herbaceous perennials by about a third, which encourages side shoots to form, keeping the plant compact and promoting bushy growth Pinch out the tips of fuchsias as this encourages a bushy habit providing more flowers As new shoots grow on your climbers, train them using soft ties to secure them to supports, keeping them looking tidy and allowing you to see the flowers
Allotment holders will no doubt be earthing up their potatoes and harvesting salad crops,as well as pinching out the side shoots on their tomato plants
For those growing onions and garlic,it's time to harvest when the leaves turn yellow Vegetable crops can attract many bugs which attack the roots and birds that can decimate crops particularly fruit, the use of nets, horticultural fleece or cloches can help or spray using organic methods
I often feel that travelling through spring is like a long car journey with the kids, every now and again you'll hear:"Are we there yet?"
Personally,by the end of spring I'm ready to collapse into a comfy garden chair, warm myself in the sun and enjoy the sounds of birds singing and bees humming as they pass by but unfortunately,as we head in to June we may not quite be there yet If you're anything like me there could be a few more miles to go,so fill up your tank and buckle in,as we finish those important jobs ready for our destination - summertime!
Cl e a n i n g
Clear the patio of pots and furniture and grab yourself a steam cleaner,if you don't have one, these can be hired or there are local companies you can employ to do the job Top tips are to sweep away debris before you start, don't go in too close or too hard and with a fan nozzle use a sweeping motion as you go Allow the area to dry completely before returning the furniture and pots.Regular cleaning will prevent moss and mould getting a grip and making the area dangerously slippery

A warmer winter with plenty of rain resulted in the hedges and evergreens shooting up and out! A good trim will ensure they keep a nice shape and prevent them from becoming too woody,it's also an opportunity to remove dead or diseased growth "Cutting back branches as the weather is warming up makes the plant less prone to frost and winter damage and allows for new buds to grow before the high temperatures of the summer months"says Gareth Mitchell, founder of Tree2MyDoor So June is a good time to tackle this job
While living near a coastline is wonderful, it's not without its issues if your house is rendered Algae blown in from the sea regularly forms on the outside of the house leaving unsightly marks that need cleaning away Once you've cleaned them off,ask your local paint supplier to recommend a good exterior paint designed to combat algae This can make a huge difference to how often this job needs repeating Wooden surfaces like fences and sheds also look tired once the sun reappears,so now is a good time to give them a clean and a fresh coat of paint or stain
With these tasks finally complete its time to dust off the cushions, perk up the parasol and check the garden lights still twinkle - are we there yet? I think we are!

It?s the 21st century and the way we do many things have changed dramatically in recent years, however there are some areas that haven? t moved as fast forward as others
Rebecca Attwood started working in conveyancing as a legal secretary 25 years ago, progressing to qualify as a chartered legal executive in 2012 and she has been helping people with the legalities involved in moving home throughout this time
After working for several large solicitors, she saw the frustrations clients experienced due to the time it takes and the processes involved in buying and selling property She said:?Clients want their conveyancer to know the details of their case and keep them informed with regular updates They also want their matter completed as quickly and
efficiently as possible With a team of conveyancers and huge caseloads to handle,it wasn? t always possible to give that one-to-one efficient service when working for a large firm I wanted to be able to offer that and so I joined Setfords as a consultant lawyer This means I can work as a self-employed legal executive with the backing of a large organisation with a central support team Working from my home office in Portishead,I work on each client?s case from instruction through to completion and can concentrate on getting the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible In addition, with no large overheads,it is possible to keep my fees lower Basically clients get a first-class legal service at a more competitive price than they might expect to pay at a traditional firm ?

After 32 years as treasurer of volunteer group Portishead Porters, Ray Shields stepped down, handing over the cheque book at the group?s recent Annual General Meeting. Ray, who was one of the founders of Portishead Porters back in 1993, has overseen the finances of the community hospital car scheme from day one.
Ray was acting on behalf of Avon County Council when the town council sought funding to set up a hospital car scheme back in 1992 A steering committee was set up to move the initiative forward and Portishead Porters came into being on 1st March 1993
Ray was delighted when the project came to fruition but as he was working full-time he didn? t feel he had the hours available to offer his services as a driver He said: ?I couldn? t volunteer as a driver at the time because I was working so I volunteered myself as treasurer and have held that position until now - when I have decided to stand down and hand over the financial reins to somebody else?
At the AGM, chairman Sue Ferguson thanked Ray for his service to Portishead Porters and the community of Portishead, saying his hard work, passion and dedication have been instrumental in the success of the group, which has transported more than 40,000 patients to their hospital appointments over the years.
