PORTISHEADRAILWAY
Tracey Fowler asks,is it really full steam ahead?
The reopening of the Portishead to Bristol railway line has been much reported over the past 20 or more years One minute it?s definitely happening and the next minute it?s off Insufficient funds to cover rising costs and a change in laws and government policies have all meant setbacks for the project In July 2024 the new government announced the railway project was off the table, but unexpectedly last month (February 2025) it was announced it?s now full steam ahead
We are told that talks in London with Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy, led by Dan Norris, the Mayor of the West of England, about reopening the line, resulted in written confirmation of the deal, however we do still need to see the colour of their money!
Following the announcement,North Somerset Council issued a statement saying:?The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority and North Somerset Council have come together to announce they are looking to contribute the additional funds needed to deliver the Portishead to Bristol rail line
The full business case was submitted to the department for transport in December last year (which) identified an emerging gap in the scheme?s funding, caused by delays, inflation and rising costs across the construction industry
To tackle this challenge, the West of England Combined Authority is set to contribute another £27m to this important railway scheme, with North Somerset looking to provide the remaining £3m
The additional funding from the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority is set to be ratified at their March committee meeting with North Somerset Council's contribution to be approved at their council meeting in February
If the additional funding is committed and the full business case is approved by the department for transport, which they have indicated will follow quickly, construction of the rail line and stations at Portishead and Pill could begin soon afterward.?
In his statement,Councillor Mike Bell, leader of North Somerset Council and executive member for major projects, said:?The additional funding from both the West of England Combined Authority and North

Somerset Council would close the gap on this shovel ready scheme, bringing us ever closer to the first trains making their journeys in 2027?
It would seem to me from this carefully worded statement there are a number of ifs and buts remaining so please forgive me if I don? t pop the champagne corks just yet!
The Portishead to Bristol line first opened on 18th April 1867 and operated until 7th September 1964,when it closed to passenger traffic as part of cuts following The Beeching Report
Dr Richard Beeching was the chairman of the British Railways Board whose controversial report decided the fate of the 2363 stations and 5000 miles of track earmarked for closure
Private freight traffic for Portishead docks continued until 1981and apart from occasional ?specials?,the line has sat idle ever since
TAKE A WALK
Readers share some of their favourite places to take a stroll in and around Portishead
This month?s walk, which explores Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve, has been provided by the team at www vistportishead net where there is a whole section dedicated to local walks, varying in length and terrain
If you haven? t visited Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve,it is highly recommended as there is so much to see and do Nestled between Royal Portbury Dock and Portishead this 150 acre nature reserve is open 24/7 and access is free It?s great for walking, cycling and running,as well as wildlife watching The paths are flat or gently sloping and walking shoes are usually adequate Though,if you plan to head down the seasonal or salt marsh tracks you might need boots if conditions are wet and muddy

There are four official entrances to the nature reserve, one is on Sheepway just past the railway bridge if you are travelling out of Portishead, however, with National Grid work in progress in the area the car park here is temporarily closed If you carry on past this entrance and turn left in to Wharf Lane there is a small car park there There?s no vehicular access in to the reserve There are also paths leading in to the reserve from Portishead marina and the Village Quarter (Phoenix Way/Fennel Road junction) There is a super map on the Friends of Portbury Wharf website which provides exact details.
The reserve is classed a site of special scientific interest and is a great place for bird watching or just enjoying a family day out Wading birds and wildfowl are the easiest wildlife to spot at the reserve, but other birds include skylarks and barn owls There are hides that overlook areas of open water which provide an invaluable wetland habitat for rare species such as great crested newt, water vole and otter, and hay meadows and hedgerows that provide food and shelter for many small mammals
Public footpaths run throughout the area and whilst dogs are allowed, they must be kept on a lead and owners are asked to stick to the paths so the dogs don? t disrupt the wildlife
Once in the reserve there are many different paths you can follow many with signposts to help you make the most of your walk There is also a special Wetlands Trail, introduced in 2024,which comprises 24 habitat panels - 12 summer and 12 winter panels ? to show visitors what creatures to look out for and where The squares on the panels are changed regularly to share more facts about the wildlife currently on the reserve

If you have a favorite walk you would like to share please em ail editor enjoyportishead@gm ail com

MY
HOME TOW N
Local radio,TV and podcast guru Ian Downsy Downs
explains what led him to Portishead
Let me take you back to 2008,I?m almost 25kgs heavier and starting to lose my hair in a very serious way I?ve just accepted a full-time job as breakfast show presenter and programme director at STARRadio, based in Weston-super-Mare and the search was on for somewhere to live

Back in the day,it was a requirement that programme directors had to live in the broadcast area of the radio station they were responsible for, there was no online listening or radio apps back in those days,so I had to be able to pick up the FM signal at home
Having to live within North Somerset annoyingly ruled out living with my best mate in his super swanky bachelor pad in Clifton Village,as I had done when I did my first stint in Bristol in 2004 No matter how hard I tried,I couldn? t hear poor old 1077 FM through those thick Victorian walls in BS8 so the search was on for where I?d live I wanted to be close to my mate and to Bristol, but still within ear shot of the radio station
I decided to drive around the broadcast area with STARRadio on in the car to see what options I had, fine in Weston,Worle,Congresbury,Yatton and Backwell, but I wasn? t catching a vibe there Nailsea came close (it had a Waitrose),Clevedon was next, but Portishead was the winner by far
I drove into town and followed the signs for Port Marine, passed Waitrose (tick) and got out and
walked around the marina, still really only half finished at the time, but there were boats, and my dad has always LOVED boats so I immediately felt at home Next I drove down to the Lake Grounds along Esplanade Road and I saw a big tanker motoring passed the headland in front of both of the bridges to Wales
WOW! I bloomin' love a super-structure and here they were by the spade full! Finally I drove down the famous Victorian High Street and it had almost exactly the same vibe as my hometown of Witney in Oxfordshire; that really sealed the deal
I found a cute little coach house on Sally Hill for rent and moved in the following week!
Portishead has everything for me - a small community town feel with all the benefits of being on the coast and like it or not,the Port Marine development around the ?docks?to give it that modern feel When you walk along the marina during the evening and see the twinkling lights and hear the clinking of the boat sails you really could be on holiday in the Med somewhere I decided to stay, bought a house and hope it?ll be my home for a long time to come

MEN?S SHED
Tracey Fowler talked to those spearheading a campaign that will see Portishead launch a project involving creation, connection and conversation
Men?s Shed is com ing to Portishead!
When Portishead retiree Bob Everitt contacted Enjoy to tell us about a Men?s Shed project opening up in our town I decided to ask around to see what people knew about Men?s Shed The responses I received varied from:?It?s a repair shop?to ?It?s a mental health thing isn? t it??
Well, both could be right I met up with Bob and Revd Nick Moxon, who is also involved in the project, to find out exactly what Men?s Shed is
Bob told me:?Connection, conversation and creation ? that?s what joining a Men?s Shed is all about

Men?s Sheds, which have been established throughout the UK, encourage people to come together to support projects in their local communities Similar to garden sheds, they are a place to pursue practical interests at leisure,to practice skills and enjoy making and mending The difference is that garden sheds and their activities are often solitary in nature while Men?s Sheds are the opposite They?re about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge and a lot of laughter
?Although labelled sheds, they often aren? t sheds at all They can be empty offices, portable cabins,
warehouses or garages Some Sheds are purpose built workshops, but they rarely start out that way Many Men?s Shed groups don? t have premises at all in the beginning and instead form a group that meets regularly for the social connection, company and camaraderie until they can find somewhere to kit out with tools ? that?s us at the moment ?
I learned that members of Men?s Sheds tend to be called Shedders and even though Revd Nick Moxon from the Methodist Church is involved in helping the project get off the ground,it?s not a religious thing Nick is involved a) because he thinks it?s a brilliant concept and b) because the Methodist Church in Queens Road just happens to have enough
land to fit a shed or cabin on,that, with the right permissions, could become the Portishead Men?s Shed HQ
Activities in Sheds in the UKvary greatly, but you can usually find woodworking, metalworking, repairing and restoring, electronics, model buildings or even car building in a typical Shed Sheds tend to attract older men,but many have younger members and women too Whatever the activity, the essence of a Shed is not a building, but the connections and relationships between its members Men?s Sheds are great for improving wellbeing, reducing loneliness and combating social isolation

In my research I found that Men?s Sheds can be particularly popular with retired men who have relocated to be near family, leaving many good friends behind Men?s Shed provides the camaraderie and bonds they missed when arriving in a new town
Bob added:?Portishead has a core group that is helping to get the Men?s Shed here off the ground We meet at least once a month to progress the project, usually on the first Friday of the month between 10am and noon at the Queen?s Road Methodist Church We are now ready to start gauging interest from others who want to get involved Portishead
Men?s Shed can be whatever we want it to be We?re a friendly bunch from all walks of life, all with quite different backgrounds Most of us are retired but this definitely is not just for ?old? people! We?d love to hear from others interested in getting involved in this?
It is without doubt that in addition to providing fun and friends,Men?s Sheds have had a positive impact on men?s mental health and wellbeing across the country
To find out more about the Portishead Men?s Shed or to meet up with the current members for an informal chat email Bob at bob beveritt@gm ail com

DIY SOS
PORTISHEAD SHEDDERS NEED YOU!
To build a home for the proposed Portishead Men?s Shed the local Shedders need materials and manpower
This is an appeal for help ? would you be willing to donate some timber, paint, cement etc? Or could you spend a few hours each week helping to build a Shed? Or if organisers selected a weekend for a ?big build? community day ? would you join in?
All donations of time and materials will be gratefully received Please email bob beveritt@gmailcom if you can help
UK MEN?S SHEDSASSOCIATION
Men?s Sheds is supported by the UKMen?s Sheds Association which works hard to inspire and support the development of as many Men?s Sheds as possible It also organises networking days to allow Sheds and Shedders to make new connections and share expertise and experiences These are usually informal one-day events where Sheds in development or the early stages of formation are also welcome www.m enssheds.org.uk

WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE?
After a 20 year career in banking Louise Wardle changed direction to fulfil her dream of becoming a teacher
With no money to pay for university and a lack lustre set of exam results Louise Wardle left school in 1978
Rather than training to be a teacher, she began a career in banking Her dad,who was terminally ill and keen to see his daughter settle in to a good career, arranged the job for her
Louise, who lives in Portishead, told Enjoy:?Despite an odd route in,it was a great career I'd always wanted to be a teacher so I sought out training and education roles within banking which was satisfying to a certain degree ?
In 1996,at the height of her career,a personal tragedy caused Louise to re-evaluate and change track completely Louise was approaching 36 when she decided to do a part-time degree at UWE,followed by a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) which allowed her to then become the teacher she had always wanted to be

INTERVIEW
Louise Wardle talks about what triggered her career change and the joys of teaching
WHAT MADEYOU RE- EVALUATETHINGS?
In 1996 I lost my first child,a daughter,Holly Joy,in childbirth Following that I got involved with the stillbirth and neonatal death charity SANDS I worked with them as a volunteer befriender but it was the counselling I received at the time that gave me the confidence to start a degree part-time,which I completed, whilst working in the bank part-time and raising my two sons
WHEN DID YOU BECOMEA QUALIFIED TEACHER?
At the age of 44 I qualified but with two young children, aged three and eight,I needed part-time work so initially I took a role supply teaching which is a great way to gain experience and find the perfect job
AREYOU PLEASED YOU TOOK THAT STEP?
Yes,very After moving to Portishead in 2008,through supply teaching I was lucky enough to find a job locally, teaching reception children,my dream job! Seeing young children develop is a real privilege, hard work but very rewarding
AREYOU STILLTEACHING?
No,I retired a few years ago I now volunteer, guide walks for local ladies, travel and paint This summer my husband and I are taking part in the Be More Ben Mountain Mission, raising money to support other bereaved families,a cause still very close to our hearts
BEMOREBEN
Be More Ben is an organisation that supports the whole family affected by the death of a child from birth up to the age of 18 Set up by Shane and Sarah Pritchard following the death of their eight-year-old son Ben,it enables families to meet with others who completely understand what it?s like when your child dies, build their own support networks, access counselling and other therapies and have opportunities to create new memories whilst remembering their child who has died

ANYADVICETO OTHERSWHO MIGHT THINK IT?S TOO LATETO CHANGETHEIRCAREER?
First, look at your present role; can you build experience and skills to prepare yourself? Then,if you can,go for it,life is short; everyone deserves to find a job they love!
This year?s big fundraiser for the organisation is the Be More Ben Mountain Mission,a hike taking the scenic route across some of the highest points of the beautiful Lake District National Park Each participant will aim to raise a minimum of £500 which will go towards supporting parents and families affected by the death of a child by providing ongoing therapeutic and peer-led support

CLAWSANDPAWS
Giving pets a second chance of happiness
Obtaining a pet from a rescue organisation can give pets a second chance in life to be happy and well cared for In addition it can save you money by often including necessary vaccinations and spaying/neutering,while also helping to reduce pet overpopulation by preventing the need to breed more animals
Claws and Paws is a local organisation run by local pet lovers Sally and Denise, who combine their skills, knowledge and passion to help cats and dogs from the UK and overseas (where there is typically less help available) to find loving homes
The Claws and Paws team of animal rescuers has more than 25

years combined experience in pet care and rescue
All animals that come from Claws and Paws are neutered and micro-chipped before being re-homed,unless they are too young to neuter
The rescuers work entirely on a voluntary basis but need considerable help with fundraising to cover costs and more
volunteers to help with fostering, home checks etc
Sally and Denise assess each pet?s needs evaluating and rehabilitating the animals before adoption,so they can match temperament and behaviour traits with the right owner and environment
Screening potential adopters is done to ensure the rescued animals are placed in suitable, loving homes where they will receive proper care,to result in the best possible outcome for the animal and owner

CELEBRATING70YEARS OFSINGING
Portishead Choral Society?s Platinum Jubilee Gala Concert marks musical milestone By PCS?s Miriam Dunn
Portishead Choral Society?s Platinum Jubilee concert on Saturday April 12th will take place the day before Holy Week begins, exactly 70 years after the choir?s first performance in 1955
Meticulously kept archives tell us that 70 years ago the audience was treated to a performance of ?The Passion of Christ?by the English composer Sir Arthur Somervell

While the venue for the event isn? t documented,we do know that the concert took place in one of Portishead?s churches - a tradition that continues today In fact, the choir has sung in most of the town?s churches, with several of these buildings proving ideal venues, thanks to their intimate settings and wonderful acoustics For these very reasons, Portishead Methodist Church has become an established location for concerts
Larger-scale performances, however, have necessitated a bigger space, provided in recent years by Gordano School?s new hall and with its exciting programme,April?s concert certainly falls into this category
The event will also mark the latest in an impressive list of milestone performances, which range from programmes of specially commissioned works to collaborative projects undertaken with other choirs in Bristol and beyond
A further dip into the archives reveals that PCS celebrated its Golden Jubilee in style with a commissioned setting of Psalm 150 by Robert Latham and Karl Jenkins??The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace? This landmark event remains firmly etched in the memories of choral society participants, including
some who are still active members today
While times change, the core of PCS remains the same A registered charity,it is today a friendly, medium-sized,choir which gives concerts locally, performs at community events and raises money for local charities
April?s concert will also, sadly,be the final one for its outgoing musical director Jonathan Palmer - another reason to make it a must for music lovers.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
Tracey Fowler talks to Dr Angela Kingdon,co-host of the award-winning Autistic Culture Podcast, who just loves living in Portishead
Towards the end of 2024 Tracie and I attended a business networking social event in the Secret Garden at Venga, organised by the lovely Leanne Bridges While there, Leanne told us someone called Angela was eager to meet us To say this lady blew us away with her energy, enthusiasm interest and love of Portishead is an understatement and this month we are delighted to introduce Angela to our readers
I?m sure Angela Kingdon is a lot of things to a lot of different people, but for now I?m going to introduce her as an autistic advocate, content creator, mum, author and someone who I hope will quickly become a friend
Angela is from the United States of America and she told us she loves England, falling in love with the country for the first time in 1992 She always vowed to someday live in London and in 1995 after visiting Bristol for the first time she vowed never to date anyone from the South West, because she found them impossible to understand!
Angela,a ghost writer by trade, had a thriving career writing about espionage, political memoirs, technology and mental health in Washington DC She got married, had a baby and in 2012 got divorced; shared custody put a temporary halt to her dreams of living overseas In 2015 she married Paul Kingdon from Weston-super-Mare (yes,in the South West of England) who was living in the USworking as a civilian for the Ministry of Defence
The two decided early in their marriage that one day, once Angela?s then young son had gone off to university, they would move to Canada, where both had friends During COVID they started to consider locations other than Canada, such as New Zealand, Italy,Uruguay and Ireland, among other places In August 2023,Paul?s mum sadly passed away and

Angela found herself in North Somerset for the funeral It was then Angela,a podcaster in her own right, stumbled on the Enjoy Portishead podcast
She said:?I listened to the July/August 2023 show on the plane ride to the funeral and immediately wanted to visit this town I asked my husband if we could pop over to Portishead while we were in the area We had been to Clevedon and Cheddar and Wookey Hole, but in 10 years together,we had never visited Portishead on one of our trips to see his family ?
Since they were in international house hunting mode, Angela and Paul called Richard at Goodman and Lilley estate agents on Portishead High Street and asked to see a couple of houses in their price range
The two fell in love with Redcliffe Bay which reminded them of their home on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland Of all the places they had considered, moving home to North Somerset had never been on the list until that visit to Portishead
Angela added:?I honestly was under the false impression the South West of England was the boring corner, but I started to realise I was wrong I went home and listened to all the early episodes of the Enjoy Portishead podcast and kept thinking, despite the fact I said I would never, ever, move to the South West of England,Portishead really feels like home I loved hearing about the Summer Show, and Portishead in Bloom, the art trail, the arguments about parking fees and Tracie?s marketing advice
The podcasts left me dying to be invited to an event at Somerset Hall or the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, both which had been mentioned in the podacsts?
Within a month the couple had put in an offer on their dream home in Redcliffe Bay and in January 2024 they got the keys Angela then started the spouse visa immigration process and got her permission to live in England in April The couple did some remodelling and decorating at their property and then Paul moved in with the cats in May Angela followed in August after seeing her son off to the University of Miami in Florida
Here?s a screenshot of one of Angela?s social media posts from that time

Angela has me in stitches as she struggles to understand some of our English sayings and despite finding it astounding how some people whinge about minor issues in the town on social media, she very much loves being a part of our community She has now very kindly agreed to write a regular feature in Enjoy for us,which we have no doubt readers will love You will find her first offering overleaf ? Enjoy!

AWINNINGTRY
By Angela Kingdon,an American living in Portishead
I moved to Portishead over the summer and my family and friends back in the USA have repeatedly asked one question about the experience:
?How?s London??
It?s quite possible my fellow countrymen believe London is the only location in all of England Most had never even heard of Bristol

All that changed a few weeks back when America?s sweetheart,Ilona Maher blew into town to play for the Bristol Bears Women?s rugby team Suddenly, everyone back in American knows Bristol and can? t believe how lucky I am to live so close to this Olympic medal winner,Sports Illustrated magazine cover girl, Strictly Come Dancing USrunner up and TikTok mega influencer.
?Come visit ?I say when they ask about Ilona ?Stay with me in Portishead "
Our town is the jewel of the Bristol Channel Almost everyone I have met in Portishead knows we are in on one of England?s best kept secrets We have small-town charm and Victorian seaside heritage Whether it?s a sunset stroll along Redcliffe Bay or an espresso martini in a bar at the marina,we?ve got it all and now we?ve got Ilona Maher nearby playing for the Bears
I?ve had the opportunity to see Ilona play a couple of times now The crowds spill over the sides of the venues and the joy is unmistakable This is Ilona?s magic. The fans are a complete mix of people from parents with little girls showing them what strong athletic women can do to Londoners and Americans day tripping to catch a glimmer of this icon of body positivity Ilona brings out the best in people She brings together like-minded people who want the world to be a stronger, healthier, happier, more loving and accepting place.Being in a stadium filled with people like that is always a good day, even if the Bears don? t win I have to admit if it weren? t for the
chance to see Ilona up close,I probably would have never seen a women?s rugby match in my entire life Now I can? t imagine not going back. With 15 players on each side, this is a true team sport I went to see one player, but I was blown away by some of the other stars on the team like Dr Simi Pam Dr Pam is an NHSdoctor who went to med school at the University of Bristol In my opinion she is the heart and soul of the team and connects the fans with the players through her incredible confidence and leadership on the pitch
If it takes an American icon moving nearby for my friends and family to finally acknowledge England is not just London, that?s okay with me! I?ll have the Bristol Bears merch waiting for their arrival And if you have a chance to catch Ilona on pitch, don? t miss it
About Angela Kingdon:Angela is an American living in Portishead with her husband and two cats She is an autistic advocate, bestselling author, ghost writer and host of the award-winning Autistic Culture Podcast Angela studies psychology at the University of Kent and serves on the editorial board of Neurodiversity Journal, she specialises in neurodiversity-affirming practices through her research and work With a PhD in communications and bestselling books like The Equalizing Quill, Angela is a leading voice in the neurodiversity movement

EASING THE AGONY
Effective treatments to help alleviate hip pain by Kathryn Harper, osteopath and co-owner of Walnut Grove Clinic

Hip pain is really common among so many people, often more so in women, especially as they age The good news is? help is available
The majority of patients we see in clinic with hip pain have one of two conditions causing the pain One is osteoarthritis and the other is bursitis, both of which can be helped greatly by manual therapy like osteopathy and physiotherapy
Those already suffering from hip pain will know that it can be a debilitating condition that can significantly impact your quality of life and sleep However, with the help of osteopathy and physiotherapy, people who are affected can find relief and improve their overall function and mobility
Many people believe as they get older hip pain is something they just have to live with but this is not necessarily the case So much can be done to help with hip pain, why suffer if there is something out there that can help you?
At Walnut Grove all our osteopaths and physiotherapists are highly trained healthcare professionals who use gentle hands-on techniques that focus on releasing tension, improving mobility and optimising function Experts in the musculoskeletal system (muscles, bones, joints and associated tissues) and its relationship with other systems in the body, means they are able to diagnose, assess and offer manual therapy including massage and exercise,to help relieve or manage

TWO MAIN CAUSESOFHIPPAIN
ARTHRITIS
Arthritis is a degenerative condition that can affect any joint, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis that affects the hip joint, causing the cartilage to wear down over time In addition to the hip it is common to feel pain in the groin and down the front of the thigh Arthritis in the hip can be caused by many things such as abnormalities in the shape of the hip bones, injury, repetitive motions over time, weight and other health conditions that may cause inflammation in the body
BURSITIS

Trochanteric Bursitis as it was commonly known, now often referred to as Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS) is a condition that occurs when bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that act like cushions to joints,

become irritated When irritated in the hip area most people feel pain in the outside of the hip, including the thigh/buttock area It can feel tender and sometimes hot to the touch The pain may increase with exercise/climbing stairs and be made worse when lying on that side or with direct pressure
There can be many causes for GTPSsuch as a sudden increased change in load in the hip or changes to activity levels Weaker muscles around the hip region can also affect the chances of this occurring In addition, hormones can influence this condition and it is often seen in perimenopausal /menopausal women

UNDERSTANDING BOUNDARIES
The foundation of self-respect by cognitive hypnotherapist and counsellor Trina Gazzard
Boundaries define our sense of self, helping us distinguish our emotions, thoughts and needs from those of others They are not rigid but adapt based on our feelings, relationships, and circumstances At their core, boundaries exist to protect us
When our boundaries are strong,we recognise our individuality while maintaining healthy connections They prevent us from feeling overwhelmed and help us engage with others in a balanced way Clear boundaries also guide our behaviour, ensuring mutual respect and preventing us from unintentionally harming or being harmed Without them,we may struggle to recognise when someone is emotionally, intellectually,or physically violating our space
Emotional boundaries allow us to understand and express our feelings while considering their impact on others Intellectual boundaries help us trust our thoughts, define our needs, and distinguish our
desires from external influences Physical boundaries establish personal space and allow us to determine how close others can be Our instincts and emotions signal when our space is being encroached upon

By setting healthy boundaries,we create a life of respect, security, and self-awareness
Hypnotherapy can help you to set and reinforce your boundaries,if you would like some help with this please do get in touch

BACK CHAT with Dr Jack
If your spine had cavities, would you notice?
By Doctor of Chiropractic,Dr Jack Cleeve (MChiro DC)
We all know the importance of looking after our teeth - brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups to prevent problems before they start No one waits until their teeth look like a set of ancient ruins before seeing the dentist But what about your spine? It protects your nervous system, which controls everything your body does, yet the average age of a first spinal check-up is 47! Imagine if we treated our teeth that way - waiting 47 years before seeing the dentist!
Misalignments in the spine can interfere with nerve signals, affecting how well your body functions,as well as how it feels Poor posture, stress and daily life all take a toll on your spine, just like sugar and plaque affect your teeth - it builds up gradually, until one day you wake up with a stiff neck,a nagging ache in your back,or more serious issues By the time symptoms appear, the underlying issue has often been there for months or even years That?s why

regular spinal check-ups, just like dental check-ups, are key to catching problems early and keeping everything working at its best
If you want to stay healthy, move well, and feel your best, your spine needs attention before problems arise

At LIFE:ALIGNED,we?re offering everyone a free spinal check-up so you can see how well your spine is functioning and whether it?s affecting your health Book your free check-up today at www lifealigneduk com or just give us a call on 01174 038612

Here at Miles Morgan Travel,we have seen the fastest growing sectors of the cruising market are luxury, expedition and river cruises, alongside the ever popular ocean cruises
Experienced cruisers know that sailing with a luxury cruise line elevates ocean travel to another level All-suite ships, with fewer passengers, means larger staterooms; more space on board and a higher staff to guest ratio Along with more inclusions such as shore excursions, beverage packages, free Wi-Fi, gratuities, room service, speciality dining and with some cruise lines offering door-to-door private executive transfers,it all adds up to a far superior cruise experience where every detail can be taken care of
Yacht-like exploration, with smaller and more intimate ships,is great for discovering the world in style They allow you to access those hard to reach, hidden ports that larger ships cannot, with comfort, elegance and unique shore experiences
Expedition cruising is a growing trend for people wanting to sail to even more remote destinations and to have unique wildlife experiences Customers are now also wanting to include the element of ?giving back?,by helping to protect fragile eco-systems of the area, making expedition cruising sustainable through the use of hybrid vessels and making a scientific study contribution a must Take a
detour down the Amazon, visit with friendly wildlife in Galapagos, sail the remote archipelago of the Philippines, meet the locals in Greenland, spot the polar bears in the snowy plains of the Arctic tundra at Svalbard,or listen to the humpback whales of the Weddell Sea calling to you
At Miles Morgan Travel we have closely followed the boom in river cruising over several years We often see first time river cruisers choosing to sail the Rhine?s historic cities and the half-timbered wine villages of the Moselle as their first itinerary
Choice of cruise line and local airport departures are a priority for our clients and we are finding that our returning river cruise guests are looking for more unusual choices like the Mississippi or the Mekong Wherever you choose to river cruise, you only have to unpack once, settle into your suite and sip your favourite drink while your ship glides through the heart of your destination in style You get to experience the cuisine and culture, make new friends, enjoy complimentary excursions ashore or simply relax on your carefully chosen river cruise

EXTRA HELP
Help at home can benefit a wide variety of people from professional couples and busy families to senior citizens
When Katy Duncan?s youngest child started school in September she considered how she would spend her newfound time She knew wanted to do something that would benefit others in her local community and after much searching the mum of two decided to take on the franchise of Extra Help here in Portishead Katy said:?We all have times when we could do with a helping hand to keep on top of daily tasks, such as meal preparation, mothers help services, shopping, dog walking, gardening or domestic cleaning services Whilst we can help anyone,we particularly support people who want to continue living independently in their own homes One of the biggest appeals to me taking on this business is that I can be useful to those around me,genuinely lightening the load and helping others As I start to chat to potential clients for my already established team of helpers to support,I have discovered that

simply meeting new people and getting to know them is a big highlight of this new role I enjoy connecting with my local community, reflected in my leadership role in the local church I attend ?

Katy and her team have a variety of experience and skills and share a passion for making a difference They offer help around the home, such as cleaning

and ironing, more heavy-duty tasks like changing the beds, meal preparation to encourage healthy habits and even help outside the home, like providing lifts, garden clearing and accompanying clients to clubs, appointments or on shopping trips They don? t offer personal care but can complement services where a care package is already in place,as so often carers are pushed for time and can? t stay to vacuum around or simply have a coffee and a chat Katy would be pleased to chat if you would like to find out more

HOME
Saving time and money when making your home beautiful with Tracie Fry
This month I thought it would be nice to share some of my favorite tips for organising, refreshing and streamlining our homes,so that when the sun finally makes an appearance we're free to go and enjoy the good weather

Hacks
How many times have you pulled the wrong-sized sheet from the top shelf of the airing cupboard,to then be hit by an avalanche of mixed pillowcases, none of them matching? I finally decided to get organised and save myself the frustration I now fold and store bedding sets in one of the sets' pillowcases The duvet cover, pillowcases and the correct sized sheet all in one handy pillowcase bag,the colour/pattern tells me instantly what's inside so I know which bed it will fit,and more importantly which bed it won't!You can't convince a double sheet to fit a king-size bed - so this idea removes the guesswork and the need to duck for cover!
Does anyone else get bored of looking at the same art in the same spot all year round? Just like a spring clean, it's a nice idea to freshen up the wall art - but to save cost and to widen the choice of available art have you tried printable downloads? Many artists now sell their work as printable files, allowing you to buy once and print at home in different sizes to suit your frame Ask your local printer if you don't have a printer at home Quay Digital in Kestrel Court is happy to help if you email them at info@quaydigitalnet

You may have seen wireless lamps around, these are great for areas where there is no mains electricity available and while they do come in many lovely shapes and sizes from table lamps to wall lights,I was interested to see if I could re-purpose a favorite old lamp to sit on a shelf without the need for cables - you can imagine my delight when I discovered that I can! First I removed the old wiring, gave the lamp a good clean and added a fresh new shade I bought myself a pack of two rechargeable light bulbs with remote control and the correct fitting for my lamp and hey presto! Not only have I given my old lamp new life, but this lamp will work for several hours should there be a power cut!

ELEPHANT IN TH E ROOM?
When selling your property, estate agent Sue Sadler explains why choosing the lowest fees over expertise isn? t always the right move!
When it comes to selling property I completely get why people look at fees and often decide to go with the cheapest option but I feel very strongly there?s a conversation to be had here, before taking this route
?You get what you pay for?is a common enough phrase familiar to most of us and it?s so true While it can be tempting to opt for the lowest fee,it isn't always the greatest idea A more expensive agent may well have more knowledge of the local area, more experience,a stronger marketing strategy and be

able to reach a larger pool of potential buyers Their experience and personality connecting with the purchasers, coupled with strong negotiating skills can mean, despite the higher fee, you actually save money because you get a better sale price as well as a smooth, stress free process
I?m not saying it?s always the case by any means,I?m saying do your homework, weigh up the pros and cons and don? t be afraid to talk to potential agents - it?s not as cut and dry as you may have thought

GIVING BACK
The importance of community engagement and positive public relations for local businesses
Giving back to the community is highly important for businesses of all sizes, not just the corporates, although obviously the level may differ Community engagement can help businesses significantly raise their profile, improve their reputation, build customer loyalty, attract talent, boost employee morale and positively impact the overall well-being of the community they operate in,making it a valuable strategy for long-term success Essentially,it demonstrates a company's commitment to the people and place where it operates, fostering a stronger connection and trust with stakeholders

community, but there are many who do this that we don? t actually hear about
OURPRTIPOFTHEWEEK
Sharing stories about your company's charitable activities can generate positive media attention and increase brand awareness So don? t just rely on your social media posts,if you have some news remember to issue a press release about it and send it to all your local and specialist media contacts and social media influencers For print media, make sure the images that accompany your news are high resolution so they can be reproduced on a page
It?s great to see many businesses giving back to their

If you are giving back make sure people know about it!

HAVE YOU USED YOUR ISA ALLOWANCE FOR 2024/25
By Rich Powell of Powell & Associates Financial Planning
The £20,000 ISA allowance remains one of the smartest ways to save income and capital gains tax-free,in both the short and long term, so it should always be part of your financial plan
Investing in a mix of Cash and Stocks and Shares ISAs may give your money the best chance for greater growth
We can help you rebalance your cash savings against your stocks and shares investments,to make the best of the markets, and potentially grow your money
NB St James Place does not offer a cash ISA
AREYOU GETTING THEMOST FROM YOURISAS?
?Max out your ISAs?It?s a familiar tax year-end mantra ? and topping up before April 5th is an annual to-do

at this time of year for most savers and investors But while it?s key to put as much into your ISAs as you feel able to,it?s also important to know that what you hold is still giving you real value for money If you?ve got more than one ISA (and maybe even a junior ISA for children or contribute to one for grandchildren) knowing how each one fits into your overall financial plan is key
TAX YEAR- END IS BOTH TOPUPTIMEAND REVIEW TIME
Here at Powell and Associates Planning we can help to review what is best for you We are conveniently located in the heart of Portishead High Street opposite Coffee# 1You will find us at 44c High Street, on the first floor, above Bennett?s Barbershop Enter from the Old Bakehouse Courtyard, where Ebb & Flo and Shanicatti Shakes are located - our white door is opposite them
The value of an ISA with St James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise You may get back less than you invested
An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA
The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation
If you transfer as cash, you?ll be out of the market until the transfer is complete You won't lose out if the market falls, but your money won't be subject to any income or growth if the market rises in this period If you transfer a fixed rate Cash ISA before the end of the term, you may have to pay a fee
Powell & Associates Financial Planning is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St James's Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the group's wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the group's websitewww sjp co uk/products The 'St James's Place Partnership' and the titles 'Partner' and 'Partner Practice' are marketing terms used to describe St James's Place representatives

MANAGINGFIRESAFETY
Expert professional advice from Safety Horizon (South West)
Safety Horizon (South West) is a leading provider of health and safety training and consultancy services, supporting businesses throughout the South-West
When it comes to fire safety, understanding what is important to reduce risk and prevent fires is paramount, along with what to do in the event of an emergency
If you are responsible for a building or workplace, there are fire safety arrangements that may need to be introduced and maintained Here are some of the most common failures we come across:

NO FIRERISK ASSESSMENT COMPLETED BY A COMPETENT PERSON
This is a legal requirement and will confirm any positive fire safety arrangements and provide you with corrective actions
NO PROCEDUREFORRAISING THEALARM
How quickly can you inform people of a fire and can they exit the building safely with no delays? Evacuation procedures must be in place
BLOCKED FIREEXIT ROUTES
Items must not block the fire exit and the emergency exit must never be locked when the premises are occupied
FIREDOORSPROPPED OPEN
Fire doors must be closed as this restricts the movement of fire and smoke, allowing a fire to be contained and provide more time to escape safely.
POORHOUSEKEEPING
Combustible material within a building could provide a fuel source in an outbreak of fire Correct storage of waste and regular cleaning/clearing up reduces risk

HEATERS
SMOKING INSIDEBUILDINGS
Even though this is against the law, there are far too many incidents where individuals are smoking inside buildings This increases the risk of fire and cannot be allowed
ARSON
Ensure access to your building or work area is restricted, including waste which could be ignited by a potential arsonist
ELECTRICALWIRING
A competent person should check the electrical wiring to ensure it is in good condition
ELECTRICALEQUIPMENT
Electrical appliances pose a risk of an outbreak of fire and so should be regularly inspected.Don? t overload sockets Look for any cracks or splits in cables and plugs Even switching off appliances will reduce the risk of fire
Do not leave heaters unsupervised and they must never be covered.
CANDLES
Unattended candles are a common cause of fire, especially in domestic properties Many landlords now introduce a ?no candle?policy within a tenancy agreement to reduce risk
The team at Safety Horizon (South West) have almost 40 years of collective experience in helping organisations with their health and safety responsibilities We have a bespoke support package for small organisations in Portishead to them help achieve compliance Please get in touch to find out more You can also visit us at www safetyhorizonsw com
