The last weekend of July sees a celebration of community, culture and talent come together in the form of the Portishead Summer Show

The show is an opportunity for the Portishead community, young and old,to come together to showcase local talent entering some of the hundreds of different competition classes,in addition to enjoying the arena entertainment, stalls and refreshments
This year's attractions include The Quack Pack, Gamegoer Gundogs and Ferrets,Ben Long Falconry, Kevin's Community Circus and Johnny G - children's entertainer,in addition to local dance troupes and music from Mike Bess and The Rock Choir It is a

Huge congratulations to the Portishead Carnival Committee who pulled off a fantastic event for our town A whole year of blood sweat and tears really paid off as thousands of people lined the streets to cheer on the carnival parade in all its glory and then head to the show field for more shenanigans in the sunshine, from live music, food and drink,to stalls, dance performances and the mayhem and madness of the new It?s a Knockout competition
Inspired by experiences of my childhood holidays, my destination of choice for a week?s break in May with my partner this year was Crete
The largest of the Greek islands,Crete offers warm and sunny weather, sun-kissed golden beaches, turquoise waters, rocky mountains, picturesque harbours, ancient ruins and much more (oh and great food!) ? what?s not to love?
I actually used Chat GPTto compare the various resorts in Crete and it did a grand job, tabulating the results and showing which resorts were lively, some more suited to water sports, the quieter family spots or ideal locations for couples,it really took a lot of the leg work out of the research trying to find the right place to stay!
Crete boasts other wonders to visit including the ancient Greek Palace of Knossos which is a must for any history nerds like me
The flight is only four hours from Bristol which is completely do-able and from May through to September you can expect blue skies and temperatures of 25-30 degrees every day Whist we were there we experienced a Saharan dust storm which made the skies an eerie orange colour for a day and we had a minor Earthquake too,but in true Greek style, the locals didn? t seem at all bothered about either of them
We had a super relaxing holiday, made friends with the lovely Greek staff in the hotels, ate some amazing food, swam in the clear blue waters of the sea and caught some golden tans, albeit mine was initially lobster red
We chose Chania, mainly because of the gorgeous horseshoe harbour complete with iconic lighthouse and the quieter, more traditional feel of the outskirts of the town with Venetian-inspired streets alive with the scent of orange blossoms and sea salt The waterfront is abundant with cafes, restaurants and shops, which is great for me as I love nothing more than wandering around of an evening trying out different tavernas and sampling the Greek cuisine Food is integral to the Cretan experience; earthy olive oils, tangy cheeses and honeyed desserts dominate menus My favourite however is Stifado,a traditional Greek meat dish served with a tasty tomato sauce Baklava is good for dessert but Kataifi is better It?s like super-charged shredded wheat covered in nuts and honey,it?s amazing!
Our hotel was in Agia Marina,it had everything we needed and was just 20 minutes or so from the main town if you wanted to visit Chania Town is a proper working city,so think Birmingham with some slightly cuter side streets
We loved Crete and would highly recommend it as there?s a resort for all tastes and requirements Yassas!

By Angela Kingdon,an American living in Portishead
I had only lived in Portishead for a few weeks when I first spotted the Waverley, the world's last sea-going paddle steamer,on the Bristol Channel last June For the uninitiated, the Waverley is powered by a three-crank diagonal triple-expansion steam engine, allowing passengers a fascinating glimpse into engineering history during their voyage Last month,my husband and I,along with about 20,000 other people in our area, got a chance to go on one of these nostalgic cruises
post bags were transferred to the Portishead Mail Cart, which rolled down to the High Street on Thursday mornings for local pick up
In their heyday, paddle steamers revolutionised shipping In the mid-1800s,steamships were lifelines Unlike sailing ships, these vessels could run reliably on fixed schedules, unaffected by wind conditions Their shallow draft was perfect for communities like Portishead, where deeper-hulled ships struggled to navigate safely This meant they could carry passengers,as well as letters, fabrics, books, food and fuel They were Royal Mail,Evri and Ocado all in one
Portishead thrived because of these arrivals Our town name? "Port-is-head"? literally tells the story of our dependence on the water, but it can feel disconnected from that history Today,we might grumble about late deliveries or packages mistakenly arriving at our neighbour's door, but we all recognise just how amazingly convenient life has become
Standing on the deck of the Waverly,I felt a connection between my monthly Daunt Book subscription and a Portishead reader of the 1840s signing up for a Charles Dickens subscription Back in those days,a paddle steamer would deliver the wrapped booklets from London to Bristol once a week, docking at the Floating Harbour From there,
A far cry from today's effortless digital downloads and doorstep drop-offs I thought about how my clothes are basically disposable now ? bought for pennies and shipped from China! How different it was in paddle boat times when French lawn, fine muslin and silk satinettes would come wrapped in oiled paper, carried via the Southampton packet boat across the Channel, then taken by rail to Bristol and from there, by paddle steamer on the Avon,to the Portishead Dock A porter from the dock would walk them door-to-door,expecting a ha?penny tip and perhaps a biscuit So much has changed, but we're still waiting at our doors, excited to unwrap our latest find
As we returned to port and watched the familiar silhouette of Battery Point lighthouse grow larger,I couldn? t help but reflect on the tiny threads of history tethering us to our maritime roots How fortunate we are to be continuously reminded of our town's origins by the beauty and steady rhythm of time and tide!

APortishead cafe and cake shop will close its doors for the very last time on 25th July after 12 years of trading
Sam Cox and Vicki John took the plunge to open Heaven on The Hill,at the top of Avon Way,adjacent to The Triangle on West Hill, in 2013 after their chocolate brownies,Australian crunch, cookies and cakes proved a hit at local markets
Over the years they have developed the café introducing sofas,a baby friendly play corner, actively promoting breastfeeding in their venue and priding themselves on catering for those with special dietary requirements,as well as providing a selection of Slimming World ?syn-free?dishes The ladies also made scrumptious celebration cakes for all occasions and have been regular judges for the baking classes in the Portishead Summer Show
The café,which was also dog friendly, often hosted community activities including children's cupcake classes, art events and charity raffles
Sam and Vicki said:?We would like to thank all our customers who have supported us in making our dream a reality over the past 12 years It has definitely been a rollercoaster ride but we would not have
changed it in any way We have watched so many little ones grow up and have created their first birthday cakes all the way through to their 12th and beyond! We have been lucky enough to meet many different people along the way, some who have become amazing friends Closing up has been such a difficult decision but unfortunately we just can? t carry on Costs have gone through the roof and this, along with some health conditions made us realise it?s time to call it a day
We have loved running Heaven On The Hill/Heaven?s Cakes and really hope the venue can remain in use for the community in one way or another ?
Don? t forget there?s still time to enjoy a hearty breakfast or delightful dessert, coffee and cake and so much more Heaven On The Hill remains open until close of business on 25th July ? make sure you pop in to say goodbye!

It?s bittersweet that Cash Access UKhas announced it is hoping to open a new banking hub in Portishead, as in the same week we heard NatWest Bank, our last remaining bank with a branch in our town, plans to close
At the time of this magazine going to print, the information we received was that a property search is underway by Cash Access UK,to accommodate a banking hub, complete with community bankers,in Portishead However the website says this is expected in June 2026
NatWest has confirmed its Portishead branch will close but says it does not yet have an exact date for when this will happen as it is committed to keeping the branch open until the banking hub is up and running Time will tell!
With fingers crossed,July in the UK
should bring with it warm weather ideal for outdoor gatherings, which is why July is National Picnic Month This month-long celebration encourages people to embrace the tradition of picnicking, which has been a popular pastime for centuries
Whether it?s a casual lunch in the park,a romantic dinner at the beach,or a large family reunion, picnicking offers a fun and informal way to enjoy good food and great company in the fresh air
So what?s the history of this summertime event?
The tradition of picnicking dates back centuries The word ?picnic?is thought to have originated from the French term ?pique-nique?,referring to a meal where everyone contributes a dish Over time, picnicking has become a beloved pastime in many cultures and here in Britain,National Picnic Month was established to encourage people to take a break from their busy lives and enjoy the outdoors with good food and good company
Staying with the theme of ?pique-nique?,when you grab your gingham blanket and brimming wicker picnic basket and head for that scenic spot, why not invite friends and family to participate in a potluck picnic? Each guest can bring their favourite dish, ensuring a diverse and delicious spread This not only lightens the load for the host but also allows everyone to showcase their culinary skills Sharing food in this way fosters a sense of community and provides a variety of flavours to enjoy, however if you?re worried you might end up with too many similar dishes, create a sign-up sheet for different categories, such as appetizers, mains, desserts and drinks to ensure you get an even spread
In addition to connecting with family, friends and colleagues,a picnic is a great time for relaxation and leisure,so why not encourage everyone to take along a favourite book or magazine and take a little me time at some point? For those who prefer to be a little more energetic, pack some outdoor games that can be enjoyed by all ages, like a Frisbee or a ball
Alternatively you could organise a scavenger hunt,or just go on a leisurely nature walk, trying to identify different plants, birds,or insects along the way If you?re picnicking on a beach where there?s safe swimming, you could even take a dip
Remember to practice eco-friendly picnicking Do your best to reduce your environmental impact by using reusable containers, cutlery and napkins; avoid single-use plastics and make sure to clean up thoroughly after your gathering, taking away any rubbish with you and ensuring you place all recyclables in the relevant recycling bins
National Picnic Month is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, connect with others and create lasting memories Whether you choose to host a themed picnic, organise a potluck,or explore new locations, the key is to embrace the spirit of community and nature With a little creativity and planning, you can make National Picnic Month a celebration of food and friendship So gather your loved ones, pack your baskets and enjoy the beauty of picnicking!
Homemade food is wonderful for picnics ? especially if it?s been freshly made by someone else! Enjoy went in search of freshly made produce, all ready to go!
The Block Bakehouse,a spin off from the Butcher?s Block (next door),is jam packed with freshly made produce from sandwiches and baguettes to pasties and pies that can all be eaten cold and are delicious choices for picnics When planning your picnic however,if you decide ditch the cheese sarnies and the scotch eggs in favour of something more unusual the Bakehouse offers an array of more adventurous tasty morsels
You?ll find a whole range of variations of the popular Bakehouse sausage rolls which include Welsh Dragon, chorizo and cheese and marmite Also great for the picnic feast is duck and spring onion in hoisin sauce, wrapped in pastry ? just as delicious cold as they are hot Or why not try the Polish inspired smoked ham and mushroom pie, which could also go down a treat? The Block Bakehouse is definitely worth checking out for picnic food with a difference!
Sushi can be a great addition to a picnic ? it?s flavourful, convenient and easy to eat Ideally pack it in a cold bag to keep it at its best Waitrose offers freshly prepared, handcrafted sushi made in store by expert artisans The sushi grade fish is carefully selected and delivered by trusted suppliers and like all the fish on sale at Waitrose,it?s 100%responsibly sourced For those who aren? t fans of fish - you?ll also find filling and flavourful vegan and vegetarian options made with colourful veg
No picnic is complete without a few sweet treats,so if you fancy some freshly baked scones to accompany the strawberries and cream,Shanicatti Shakes in the Old Bakehouse Courtyard in Portishead High Street can help You will find them baking a wide variety of cakes with different choices each day from walnut and coffee cake to millionaire shortbread They also bake a good selection of vegan and gluten free products
North Somerset Council (NSC) has announced it may no longer be able to maintain important, but non-statutory local services and facilities including parks and play areas, litter bins, the Lake Grounds,Somerset Hall and Portishead Library and is asking Portishead Town Council (PTC) to take on responsibility for these assets and services
PTC says it recognises the value of these services to the community and is committed to exploring viable ways to safeguard and improve them The council now wants to hear the views of local residents and so has launched a public consultation which will run until Monday 28th July
A series of pop-up consultation events will take place around town, details of which will appear on PTC?s social media channels and on the local notice boards once they have been finalised, along with details of how to access the public consultation Alternatively more information can be obtained from the town council office on 01275 847078 or in the
news section at www portishead gov uk
Paul Gardner, chair of PTC,said:?Portishead Town Council is up for the challenge but we really need to understand people?s views and priorities so that we can make the right decisions to protect and improve the services that matter to them most We urge everyone who is interested in the future of Portishead to get involved in the consultation and have their say ?
This month we?ve opted for a small but interesting walk, but first a little background information
There are two plots of adjoining land at the bottom of Downside with ?Slade Road Play Area?on a sign near one of the entrances The two plots were once part of the old Portishead Primary School site Plot one, consisting of roughly two-thirds of the land is owned by North Somerset Council (NSC) and was previously the school playing field Plot two is owned by Portishead Town Council (PTC) and used to be the school playground
We park in Roath Road car park and cross Slade Road at the top of Roath Road, taking the public footpath which runs in front of Adlington House where Portishead Primary School once stood
The North Somerset land is a field, whereas the Portishead Town Council land is a strip of unmaintained woodland further up the hillside towards Briary Road, bordered by a small stream which rises from a spring The PTC plot has a covenant on it which says it must always remain a play and amenity area In 2023 PTC refurbished part of this area and installed new play equipment
The NSC plot has been highlighted as a potential site for housing but following a public consultation in 2024 it was removed from NSC?s official sites allocated for housing Despite this, the fear remains that the area may be developed at some time in the future For now though, this area provides a tranquil short walk which really doesn? t feel as close to the town centre as it is
After an extremely short walk we find ourselves surrounded by trees and come across the small play park complete with slide,a basket swing, hexagonal climbing tower and trim trail If you have little ones with you,you will definitely want to stop and play awhile, but if you?re just taking a stroll or a dog walk you have three footpaths to then choose from The path on our right takes us to the NSC plot,a field sloping down towards Slade Road, with Downside, currently a cul-de-sac,on its left border It?s pleasant enough to walk in but is uneven and hard underfoot thanks to all the dry weather we?ve had recently
With no dog to walk,we head back to the play area Here it?s cool under the canopy of the trees, the ground is much softer and the air is fragrant with the earthy scent of soil There are two more paths leading away from the play park to explore The middle path takes us just a short walk through the trees to where the land meets the homes on Leeside and the final path is the one that takes us up the hill towards the aforementioned Briary Road
This walk is short but sweet and ideal if you are out walking with young children

Today osteopath Kathryn Harper runs Walnut Grove Clinic with her husband Steve, but did she always want to be an osteopath and business owner?
Kathryn Harper has an energy about her that is quite contagious and she loves helping people, putting the two together,it?s no wonder she is a successful medical practitioner Fascinated by the way the body works Kathryn knew she wanted to do something medical when she grew up,but thought she might study to be a vet or midwife, before actually deciding on osteopathy Today the mum of two runs Walnut Grove,a successful multidisciplinary clinic in Portishead, with her husband Steve,as well as a community interest company that supports wellness in the community, but running a business of her own,
let alone two,was not really something Kathryn had in mind as she embarked on her career Enjoy explores Kathryn?s journey,to discover how running the two business came about.
After my A-levels,I had a minor detour considering a geography degree, but then realised it wasn't for me and took a year out to add another science A-level into the mix to enable me to look into osteopathy or physiotherapy I love helping people (ask anyone who knows me well) and I love all things medical The body and how it works fascinates me My dad was having osteopathic treatment and sent me along for treatment for a bad back when I was in sixth form and this peaked my interest I then did some work experience within a physiotherapy outpatients department and at the local osteopaths and thought yes, this is for me
With four years of hard work at university I qualified and then worked with a passion to ensure my patients received the very best treatment I could offer I joined Walnut Grove and after many years there when Zara, who founded and owned the clinic, decided she wanted to step back, she broached Steve and I about taking it on.Running a practice wasn? t really on our radar but Zara felt we were the right fit for running Walnut Grove! After being asked three times we felt the time was right and we would have been daft to not consider it We have a great life here with the children, family and friends
WHAT?SYOURFAVOURITEPART OFTHEJOB?
Those who know me know I love a chat and I really enjoy getting to know my patients and their stories I also love the feeling of helping people, there's nothing like it I've been lucky to have had a great career out of my chosen profession; only once in 24+ years have I ever considered ditching it all for a
change and that was nearly 20 years ago!
The admin as it takes me away from the practical part of my job
ANY UNUSUALEXPERIENCES?
Several unusual experiences but I'm bound by patient confidentiality!
HOW DID THECIC COME ABOUT?
When we took over Walnut Grove in 2021,we embarked on a mission not just provide exceptional healthcare, but to give back to the community we serve too After much research, hard work and collaboration with local wellness enthusiast Candy Minshall who shared our vision,Walnut Grove Wellbeing CIC was born As a business this is part of our social corporate responsibility - it is the non-profit making arm of our clinic We secured grants which allowed us to launch wide-ranging wellness initiatives in our community on a free or subsidised basis, making them accessible to all regardless of budgets

Be prepared to work hard, osteopathy requires a high level of specialisation and ongoing learning, making it a challenging and intellectually stimulating career, but it?s well worth it for the rewards Osteopaths have a direct impact on patient well-being,alleviating pain, improving mobility and enhancing overall health, there?s no better job satisfaction than that as far as I?m concerned

for parents with children who will be starting school in September by
Starting school is a very big moment for any child and it?s one that can be accompanied by a combination of excitement and anxiety
One of the keys to happiness when it comes to starting school is ensuring your child is as independent as possible They will adapt quickly to the school environment if they feel confident in many of the tasks they face
At The Nursery preparing children for starting school begins early, which may be why primary schools often say they can tell which pupils in their reception classes have come from The Nursery.
Of course most parents will already have been working with their children on many of the skills that
will help them with school readiness, possibly without even realising how vital these skills are Activities like ballet and gymnastics, for example, help with gross motor skills They help with muscle development and also coordination, which will help your child when it comes to dressing and undressing for PE
Encouraging children to dress themselves regularly in the months ahead of starting school can take a lot of pressure off them when it comes to getting changed in school or even putting hats, coats and gloves on for playtime.Make sure they can put their shoes on the right feet and simple tips such as putting their shoes together and putting their socks inside will help your child organise themselves,as well as being a huge help to the class teacher!
Provide your child with plenty of mark making opportunities as this will also help with muscle development and will eventually give them the strength to hold a pencil in a tripod grip Being able to recognise their name is important too
Using the toilet independently is another skill that will help make your child?s transition to school a more comfortable one If your child is used to using the toilet independently at home and in other settings they will feel confident about doing the same at school, which in turn will boost their self-esteem
summer it?s a great idea to get a photo of your child?s teachers and teaching assistants to help them become familiar with them
It is also important for your child to practice washing and drying their hands independently and automatically after toileting A child?s priority is often getting back to their activities,so reminders about the importance of these hygiene processes and making it part of the toileting routine will help them maintain these practices
Children need to make connections with people to feel secure,so before the schools break up for
Start talking about school, discuss the fun things they will do,the new friends they'll meet and the opportunity to learn, addressing any anxieties or fears openly
All of these things can help with a smoother transition to school
North Somerset MPSadik al-Hassan was a recent visitor to Portishead?s iconic seafront lido
Mr al-Hassan,who recently spoke in Parliament about the importance of swimming as a life skill and the vital role swimming pools play in community life, expressed strong support for the recent substantial Government grant awarded to the pool The funding, provided through the Community Ownership Fund, will be used to upgrade the facilities at the 62-year-old lido
Community Ownership Fund grant to create a more sustainable and modern facility It's exactly the kind of forward-thinking investment our local facilities need "
The grant will support a range of improvements, including the installation of solar panels, enhancements to the pool?s infrastructure and upgrades to the on-site café,ensuring the lido remains a vibrant and sustainable hub for the community well into the future
The MPsaid:"Portishead Open Air Pool is a treasured community asset that brings people together and promotes wellbeing across North Somerset I'm delighted to see how effectively they're using the
Portishead Running Club organises a 24-hour challenge to raise money for Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal
On 5th February 2025,Portishead Running Club member Lucy Radford and her husband Steven received the news no parent should ever have to hear:their three-year-old son,Connor, had leukaemia
Lucy said:?The next 14 days were spent in hospital as inpatients It was an incredibly dark and difficult time Only one parent was allowed to stay with Connor overnight,so I remained with him while my husband and our extended family visited daily to give me short breaks I would occasionally go out for a run, just to clear my head and gather some strength
Throughout it all,the staff at the Children?s Hospital were simply incredible On Connor?s birthday - spent in hospital - he was given presents by the hospital team After every tough procedure, there was a little light for him:a visit to the treasure box, where children can pick a small toy or treat It might seem like a small gesture, but in those moments,it meant everything So much effort and funding goes into making the hospital feel less like a hospital and more like a place of comfort and care for both children and families?
Connor is now on a courageous journey, supported by the love of his family and the dedicated staff at Bristol Children?s Hospital
To show their support for Connor and his family, members of Portishead Running Club have organised A Run For Connor,a fundraising event that will take place over 24 hours, starting at 8om on Friday 11th July and concluding at 8pm on Saturday 12th The run will start and end at Hall and Woodhouse at Portishead marina with participants running at one-hour intervals, either solo or in groups
More than 50 runners will be taking part with more runners, who are unable to get there, running and logging their hour wherever they may be
A spokesperson for Portishead Running club said:?We hope plenty of people will get behind us to support us in this inspiring effort, from which we hope to raise £2,000 for Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal We are all incredibly grateful for the work done by this amazing charity that supports the hospital in making the experiences of children like Connor and their
families more bearable ?
Making a small donation to help the runners reach their fundraising target will help other families going through the unthinkable feel a little less alone To donate just scan the QRcode or visit:

It was while talking to Claire Quinn, owner of Ebb & Flo gift boutique in Portishead High Street, that Enjoy editor Tracey Fowler discovered Claire had retail in her veins Her parents had started Clevedon Domestics back in the 1970s,a company still in the family today
And so? with Clevedon just a stone?s throw away from Portishead we decided it would be good to share their story with our readers
In 1978,Cyril and Kath Rees set off on a new chapter, swapping their West Midlands home for the charm of Clevedon With little more than a vision and a strong work ethic, the couple laid the foundations of what would become a much loved local business - Clevedon Domestics
Kath ran the shop with care and precision, selling household essentials like kettles, irons and spare parts, while Cyril went out on call, repairing washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges and cookers Their love for Clevedon was palpable, lunch breaks were often enjoyed with a sandwich on the seafront, taking in the fresh air and sea views that had drawn them to Clevedon in the first place
Clevedon Domestics was and still is,a true family business Over the years, daughter Claire and son Martin joined the team, each bringing their own strengths Martin then eventually took on the business in 2008 As their reputation for honesty and reliability spread,so too did the scale of the business but every customer need remained catered for
Cyril, known for his deep knowledge and gentle nature, had time for everyone-no matter how minor the repair He worked well into his 80s and even now still pops by to carry out vacuum and microwave repairs Claire said:?In our eyes he is Clevedon?s national treasure and often is complimented on his work and what he does for the community ?
These days Martin continues as the sole engineer working out on the road, following in his father?s footsteps-not just in skill, but in spirit Like Cyril,he thrives on the daily interactions and is a real people person, continuing the work of his father with integrity.
The next generation, granddaughter Jasmine now leads the business, taking after her grandmother Kath?s footsteps in handling accounts, supporting customers and sales
Plans are currently underway to close the shop?s physical doors, evolving to the changing times while honouring its roots Clevedon Domestics will continue to run as normal online and on the road
Clevedon Domestics is more than
just a repair service; it?s a story of family, community and enduring connection - one that continues to unfold, generation by generation.
A new monument coming to our neighbouring town?
Tracey Fowler investigates
Anew landmark,to celebrate Clevedon?s motoring heritage,is due to be installed on the Six Ways roundabout later this month This monument, commissioned by car enthusiast, Clevedon resident Mark Reber, will be a metal copy of a car designed and built by Clevedon engineer Richard Stephens This is thought to be the very first entirely British designed and built car and it was created in Richard?s warehouse on The Triangle where he ran his business Stephens Engineering and Motor Car Works
Given his lifelong love of cars,Reber was delighted when he moved to Clevedon with his family during the back end of the pandemic,to learn of the town?s connection with the motor industry and discover a book by William Fairney book titled,Richard Stephens and the Clevedon Motor Cars.Keen to share this information and his passion for cars,Reber started a Facebook group and began to build a community of classic and vintage car enthusiasts The group has been named Clevedon Cars and Coffee and currently has around 8 5k followers
Such is the popularity of this event,it has now expanded over several different sites, bringing with it refreshments and entertainment, ideal for a great day out.Areas now welcoming cars include:Queen Square,Six Ways and the Salthouse Pub Then there are motorbikes at Clevedon Community Centre and a Wild Card Theme at the Hawthorns, plus another new area coming this month
As the community grew,Reber organised a meet-up for car enthusiasts around the paved area by the Leaf and Bean café at Six Ways? a great place to meet up and enjoy a cuppa! The meeting however, was so successful that it has now become a popular monthly event Attracting crowds of car lovers from far and wide,on the second Saturday of each month classic and vintage cars pour in to Clevedon to a networking event that allows the owners and their families to make new friends with those of similar interests, swap stories and generally enjoy the gathering of vehicles they can explore at their leisure
On Saturday 12th July 2025 at 10am Stephen?s Monument will be unveiled, supported financially by enthusiasts, local businesses and organisations; welcomed by locals and historians as well as motor and design enthusiastsIt certainly looks like it?s going to be a great event There will be live music from the 789s,playing at Paddock at the Park,a new venue for the static meet-up,on the Salthouse Fields, adding a 240 car capacity to the already widespread event
Good luck to all involved,we can? t wait to see the monument and look forward to hearing all about it

We all insure our cars, the contents of our homes, even our holidays and our pets ? almost without thinking But have you ever stopped to think about protecting your family, your lifestyle and your wealth?
Taking the time to future-proof your family?s finances now can make a real difference to your financial wellbeing and those you care about, both now and in later life.
To get started, ask yourself the following questions: What would happen to your family?s lifestyle if you or your partner couldn? t work?
How would your family manage financially if you or your partner died?
Could you cope if you or your partner suffered a serious illness or faced expensive medical costs?
Looking further ahead still?
How important is it to leave an inheritance for your loved ones?
Could your family be faced with a hefty inheritance tax bill?
Would your family?s future financial security suffer if you needed care in old age?
Having a plan isn? t just about protecting your assets, it?s about looking after the people who matter most to you and that?s at the heart of everything we do at Powell & Associates
We offer bespoke protection advice and can make recommendations from a range of different providers, available through St James?s Place which means we can tailor our solutions to meet your personal needs
The different types of protection policy we can use to build a plan for you include:
LIFEASSURANCE? which pays a lump sum when you die - of which there are two types:term assurance which provides cover for a specified period of time and whole of life assurance,a policy that pays out when you die irrespective of when that happens
INCOMEPROTECTION - designed to provide you with an income should you be unable to work for a prolonged period, due to illness or injury
CRITICALILLNESS - this type of policy pays a lump sum if you suffer one of the serious conditions covered by the plan such as cancer, heart attack or a stroke
Please note that Term Assurance,Income Protection and Critical Illness plans do not have cash-in value and will stop if payments to them cease

Sunlight has a whole host of benefits from boosting mood and reducing stress,to helping maintain our circadian rhythm and improving sleep Let?s face it, everything feels better with a blue sky! However, most of the health benefits from the sun are thought to be due to its role in the production of vitamin D The body produces vitamin D when skin is exposed to sunlight, particularly UVB rays Aim for short periods of sun exposure though, rather than long, intense periods
While sun exposure is important,it's also crucial to protect your skin from harmful UV rays by using sunscreen, especially during prolonged sun exposure Don? t forget you can always top up your vitamin D from your diet or using supplements if necessary

The world?s five Blue Zones:Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy),Nicoya (Costa Rica),Ikaria (Greece),and Loma Linda (California) are home to some of the longest-living people on earth One key to their vitality is natural movement combined with strong social ties.
In these regions, exercise happens organically.People walk to visit friends, work in their gardens, herd animals,or prepare food by hand These daily routines keep their bodies active and agile without the need for structured fitness programs
But just as important is community Physical activity is often done with others - walking with neighbours, dancing during festivals,or cooking as a group, fostering social connections Studies show such bonds are as vital to longevity as diet or exercise
Lifestyle in the Blue Zones offers a powerful reminder to live well, move naturally and stay connected.
It was with this in mind that Walnut Grove
Wellbeing CIC introduced Senior Strong, classes where exercise is combined with meeting new friends over a coffee afterwards It?s fun,not too intense and combines movement, strength and balance with friendship

As we go about our daily lives,we often underestimate the importance of foot strengthening exercises Our feet are the foundation of our body, supporting us as we stand, walk, run and even just sit It is crucial to keep them strong and healthy in order to prevent injuries elsewhere in the body
The foot is an intricate part of the body, consisting of 26 bones,33 joints,107 ligaments and 19 muscles!
Here are a few simple daily exercises you could do to bullet proof those feet, prevent injury and reduce the risk of falling
This exercise helps to improve the flexibility and strength of the intrinsic muscles in your feet and toes Simply place a small towel on the floor and use your toes to grip and lift it off the ground.Repeat as many times as you like.
This exercise helps to strengthen the muscles that control the movement of your big toe, which is
important for maintaining proper balance and stability Sit or stand and place your foot flat on the ground Then, try to lift just your big toe off the ground while keeping the rest of your toes in contact with the floor Hold this position for a few seconds before lowering your big toe back down Repeat this movement several times on each foot to improve the strength and coordination of your toes.
Conversely, you can also work on raising your other toes while keeping your big toe on the ground This exercise helps to strengthen the muscles that control the movement of your smaller toes, which are often neglected in traditional exercises
Heel raises help to strengthen the muscles in your calves and improve ankle stability Start by standing with your feet hip-width apart and slowly lift your heels off the ground as high as you feel able Hold this position for a few seconds before lowering your heels back down Repeat this movement several times. If you feel particularly unsteady then very gently and lightly rest your fingertips on a surface such as a kitchen work top This very light touch will help the body to feeling more stable As you improve try to do the calf raises without any touch
These target the muscles in the arch of your foot to improve stability and support and keep a healthy medial arch The medial arch is one of the three arches in the foot, that most people are aware of as it is more noticeable when it ?drops?creating a flat foot appearance Trickier to describe but the aim is to keep your foot in full contact with the floor whilst gently lifting up the medial arch
To improve your overall balance and reduce the risk of falling whilst also strengthening the ligaments in
your ankles, knees and beyond, try standing on one leg, ideally for 30 to 60 seconds, but start with what you are capable of even if that is 10 seconds Every little counts! Very much like the calf raises you can use a light touch on a surface if you feel you need something to help steady you at first and then as you improve you can remove the light touch We often recommend people try this when they're brushing their teeth as it's a good way of getting an exercise in without taking time out of your day!
These exercises can be done throughout the day, even when you're watching TV or on the phone,so shouldn't be too time consuming but can really benefit the health of your feet Don't forget to show your feet some love with these essential exercises Your body will thank you in the long run

The long warm spring resulted in many of us finding our plants in the garden were well ahead of where they would usually be and some which would usually be at their best now, peaked last month The lack of rain has had an impact on the garden too,so we have all had to step up with the watering,I?ve also raised the cutting height on my lawnmower to leave the grass that bit longer
At this time of year it?s really important to keep dead heading the various flowering plants For most plants this means snipping off the spent flowers but some flowers like Alchemilla Mollis,Hardy Geraniums and Nepeta will provide a second flush,so you could take the shears to these
July is also a good time for sowing seeds as the warmth and good light levels help with germination. You can extend the growing season by sowing seeds directly into borders and pots For an autumn crop of
peas and dwarf beans you can sow a last batch now.
I have been busy preparing for the Summer Show I usually enter several classes and whilst I may not always win a prize,I do like to have a go - as our website states:"If you don't have a go we won't have a show "So do come along on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th to the Show Field ? I?ll see you there!
Despite a few downpours on the Saturday,Portishead Open Gardens weekend was a major success once again this year Hundreds of visitors enjoyed exploring the 15 beautiful gardens taking part over the weekend of 7th and 8th June Visitors wandered through the gates, peaking behind walls and hedges, admiring plants, flowers, fruit trees and vegetable patches, sitting on lawns and admiring garden furniture, outdoor kitchens, ornaments and even a stream with a delightful bridge going over it Some gardens served teas or homemade pasties, while others included art exhibitions and plant sales
The Portishead Open Gardens weekend is the biggest fundraising event of the year for Portishead in Bloom, the voluntary group that keeps the town looking florally fabulous all year round
For those who missed this delightful event, here?s a quick round up in pictures
Feeling inspired with Tracie Fry
Iam a huge fan of the Portishead Open Garden event Each year Tracey and I visit as many gardens as we can, snapping photos to share with our readers while admiring the hard work and thoughtfulness behind each gate we walk through I return home full of ideas,a list of beautiful plants I want to grow and an explosive colour palette I can imagine enjoying in my own back yard the reality is,I'm just not a gardener,if I?m lucky I may manage a few pots bearing pretty geraniums if I remember to water them! This year however,I did find inspiration that even I might be able to bring to my empty canvas, this garden was all about lifestyle, spending time outdoors with family and friends and escaping the crazy for a moment of peace and clarity This is garden No 7 on the Open Gardens map
Co sy u p
For a while now we have seen a growing trend in outdoor heating Fire pits, overhead heaters and chimineas all offer extended time in the garden, they have become essential for social garden lovers, especially when you consider our coastal climate and how the evening temperature drops The idea at this property however takes it to the next level.A full size log burner, complete with mantle and chimney breast, makes this outdoor space feel like a cosy living room I love the attention to detail though:the mirror above the mantelpiece, the potted plants and the vase of tulips all add to the experience and who doesn't love watching a log fire burn into the night?
H i d e aw ay
Alfresco dining is always fun This garden provides an outdoor area in which to relax with room for children to play while grow-ups chatter and reconnect An overhead cover makes the outdoor decking available for longer periods, protecting you and your guests from the sun,or more often than not,a sneaky shower, while the under table rug makes you want to kick off your sandals and feel at home
Garden No 7 had one last surprise for us,hidden under the deck we were thrilled to find not just a tub,but a delightful sanctuary complete with potted plants, candles and a pretty mirror hanging on the wood clad wall There's even a shelf to hold your morning coffee,or a glass of wine while you watch the sun set! A private space to take a dip, read a book or simply be quiet The question is,do you go in hot or cold? Could I? Should I? Would I, take a bath in my garden? I think I would!
If you feel inspired, why not join us next year and visit the Portishead in Bloom Open Gardens? You may just be surprised at what you find
After over a decade of focusing on other parts of their Victorian home, James and Jacqui finally turned their attention to the kitchen,a functional but uninspiring space that no longer suited their lifestyle
By Gardiner Haskins Interiors
?It wasn? t our taste and the dining end always felt a bit cramped?says Jacqui ?It still worked, but it was clearly nearing the end of its life ?
The couple wanted a simple,low-maintenance design with improved storage, more prep space and better flow - especially for entertaining Keeping the existing layout, with cooking at one end and dining at the other, they met with three local kitchen suppliers to explore ideas
Zoe Waller from Gardiner Haskins quickly stood out ?She was knowledgeable, asked all the right questions and offered thoughtful suggestions?says Jacqui One of Zoe?s first ideas - replacing deep wall cabinets with shallower ones - instantly transformed the space ?It made the dining area feel much bigger, yet we actually gained storage and display space ?
Zoe created an initial plan and over several follow-up meetings, the design evolved without pressure or rush ?She really focussed on what would work best for us?adds Jacqui
The final scheme included soft grey cabinets and black worktops, complemented by stunning blue glass splash-backs digitally printed with Jacqui?s own artwork,an idea sparked by Zoe when the couple struggled to choose a splash-back colour ?It?s unique and gives the kitchen real wow-factor,? Jacqui says
Other thoughtful touches included eye-level stacked ovens to reduce bending,a sleek induction hob to
replace their old gas one and subtle design choices like textured worktops and horizontally laid flooring to visually widen the room ?Zoe even suggested the floor direction; it didn? t cost more, but it made a big difference?says Jacqui
Once plans were finalised, the installation was managed by Gardiner Haskins?recommended contractor,Wayne
The couple were away for most of the two-week build but appreciated the regular updates and progress photos ?Zoe visited during fitting just to check on things - it was really reassuring?Jacqui adds
Now,the kitchen is the heart of James and Jacqui?s home With deep drawers,clutter-free surfaces and a slide-away oven door that they both love,it?s a practical yet stylish space that suits their lifestyle perfectly ?It?s comfortable, social and a joy to use? Jacqui says ?Zoe really listened and understood what we needed; she did a brilliant job ?

How our local businesses support the community
Giving back to the community they serve demonstrates commitment from local businesses to the community that supports them; it helps build customer loyalty and connection Businesses can give back to their community in many different ways for example: donating to local charities, sponsoring community events, donating prizes for draws and competitions, volunteering employee time, offering pro-bono services, providing discounts to local residents, partnering with nearby schools, advertising with local media (as it?s the advertising that makes local publications possible),hiring locally and supporting causes aligned with their company values; essentially reinvesting a portion of their success back into the community they operate in

Ray Kryhul, who heads the trainers at GTETA and also has more than 40 years experience, said: ?Health and safety is serious business but that doesn? t mean the training to gain vital qualifications in the construction and tunnelling industries has to be boring We have listened to feedback from delegates who say they fear training and achieving the qualifications can be a boring task and so we ensure all our trainers at GTE TA are anything but that We find the more engaging the trainers are the more invested the delegates become; this is probably why we have such a high pass rate?
