Welcome to the August edition of Enjoy Portishead
Before writing this I was flicking through the August 2024 issue of Enjoy and was surprised to see I had referred to the shocking weather we?d been having and how I was wondering if we?d get any sunshine in August This year I?m wondering if the warm sunshine we?ve been enjoying for the past two or more months could possibly continue! How the years differ
As we prepare to print, organisers are putting the finishing touches to the Portishead Summer Show which takes place at the end of July Good luck to all those involved
This month,in hope that our summer continues to be warm and sunny we take a look at everything barbecues from what it takes to make the perfect barbecue to our favourite recipes for the grill and we talk to Tickenham farm owner Simon Dyer whose life revolves around barbecues
Also in this edition you?ll find some great free things to do with the children during the school summer holidays,as well as information about holiday clubs and places to visit
We?d like to say a big thank you Waitrose Portishead, our newest distribution point for Enjoy Our first weekend in the store saw more than 1,000 copies fly out
Welcome to any new readers!
Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram to keep up-to-date with the latest Enjoy news and remember you can read back copies of Enjoy and listen to our podcasts at www visitportishead net/media php Have a great August and we?ll be back with our September issue in a few weeks
Tracey Fowler - editor
Taking pride of place right on Portishead seafront,Portishead Open Air Pool is heated throughout its summer season from April to September, while also opening for cold water swimming during the winter In addition the 33 metre pool, complete with extensive sun terraces, toddler pool and tuck shop, offers twilight and midnight swims,is home to charity galas, life saving training, swimming lessons and other water related activities, not to mention the occasional outdoor cinema
Thanks to a recent grant aid award from the Community Ownership Fund the lido is set for major improvements in the near future, with the trust?s goal being to make sure this incredible funding has the biggest impact possible before the tight deadline of 19th December 2025
The work is all budget dependent but we can reveal that the refurbishment work planned includes improved changing room lay out and updates to the facilities,a cafe makeover and accessible toilets and pool access
The pool, saved by the community in 2009 and run by Portishead Pool Community Trust, relies heavily on volunteers to keep it going for future generations Adjacent to the pool is Café Lido, also run as part of
Already complete are essential improvements like new boilers, shiny solar panels, crucial roof repairs and even removing the chimney!?
Toddler Swims
New swim sessions and easier booking have been introduced this season
The pool is now publishing monthly swim timetables, making it even easier to plan your visits and two new sessions have been introduced:
Quiet General Swim
This is perfect for anyone who prefers a calmer, less crowded atmosphere It's a reduced-capacity session, ideal if regular swims feel a bit overwhelming
Lunchtime sessions designed especially for the youngest of splashers! Sessions can be booked via the pool website with tickets released in advance to avoid disappointment
The lido has some awesome merchandise this year, including cool hats! Purchasing any items of merchandise helps support the operation and the future of the pool,so when you next visit do consider grabbing some goodies While the Community Grant is covering big capital investments, the trust still needs to continually fundraise for things like new furniture, lighting, outdoor benches and general operational costs Every little helps!
Paid roles and volunteer posts available!
If you are you looking for a new opportunity, different roles pop up regularly at the pool and café,both on a volunteer basis and as paid positions Check the pool website for the latest paid roles
Sadly the pool will need to close for a time after the end of the summer season to allow the planned works to take place,so make the most of your swimming now A spokesperson for the pool said:?Please bear with us,it'll be worth the wait,we promise!?

The sky is blue, the sun is shining and the mercury is rising! Here are my top five favourite things to do outside this August!
The Greatest Showm analfresco!
Queen Square in Bristol famed for its historic Georgian buildings is becoming an outdoor movie theatre later this month! There are lots of movies to choose from including Pretty Woman,Shrek and Wicked, but the date in my diary is Friday 22nd for a sing-along with The Greatest Showman? someone pass me my top hat and cane!
Cafe Lido @ Portishead Open Air Pool
One of my absolute favourite things to do is take my two dogs for a cup of tea and a couple of puppachinos on the terrace of the Lido Cafe! I love that it?s run by volunteers and that the money made enables us to keep our open air pool open It?s a 100% community effort and I?m not going to lie ? the homemade cakes are DELICIOUS! (Don? t tell my diabetes nurse)
The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta
This is one of my fave things to do in the summer,I never get bored of seeing those big balloons flying over Bristol.I had the honour of DJ?ing at the fiesta a couple of years ago and it was a really great vibe! The night glows are my favourite, grab a blanket, your favourite person and a picnic and check out the musical balloon flamey spectacular!
If you?d have told me that I?d be stood up on a surf board within 15 minutes of having a lesson I?d never have believed you ? until I visited The Wave in Easter Compton! I had a quick lesson and then straight into the wave pool that creates perfect waves every time Okay the board was the size of a garage door and I was only up for about five seconds, but I?m claiming it The location is VERY cool,I felt like a surfer for the morning ? gnarly dude
I love an excuse to get outside and have a wander and the summer trails in Bristol are just that We?ve had bears, unicorns, sheep and now the Gromits are back for a fourth outing! So grab the app or a map and track down the big dog and his mates before the end of the month! It?s free,it?s good fun and it?s steps you probably won? t have done otherwise.
Ian Downs - Presenter
?By Angela Kingdon, an Am erican living in Portishead
At 5am Portishead was still asleep My son and I,however, were on the move ? bound for Bristol Airport, boarding a 740 flight and eating breakfast in Dublin by nine.
This was my first?extreme day trip?? a concept I hadn? t even considered before moving to England Where I?m from in the US,getting to a different country is a once-a-year commitment, not a casual Tuesday plan But here? with a few clicks and a backpack,I can leave the country, explore a whole new culture and still be home in time for bed.
Dublin delivered:we headed straight for the?Portal,a public art installation where we watched people in Vilnius,Lithuania and Lublin,Poland, walking through their day From there,we had the perfect Irish breakfast at Gallagher?s Boxty House, paid tribute to the belle of Dublin herself ? Molly Malone ? and wandered through Trinity College to Grafton Street which was alive with music for people watching and window shopping
High tea at the historic Shelbourne Hotel was as special as ever, but this time we made a new friend, an American expat living in the hotel long-term who bought us a glass of champagne to go with our sandwiches and cakes.Locals told us we couldn? t miss the Guinness Experience and they were right We ended our tour with pints in the Gravity Bar, soaking in panoramic views of the Wicklow Mountains and the city below Dinner at Fire lived up
to the hype and we capped off the night in Temple Bar with fiddles, jigs and one last pint of Guinness before heading back to the airport The whole day felt like some sort of time travel magic trick.
It?s one of the things I love most about living in Portishead It?s a peaceful place ? all coastal calm and small-town charm ? but it?s also a springboard The point isn? t to tick off landmarks It?s to remember that life doesn? t have to be routine when you live in a place like this Extreme day tripping reframes your sense of what?s ?close?Paris isn? t far Brussels isn? t far Even a trip to Lisbon doesn? t take much longer than having a leisurely breakfast
It?s also beautifully low-pressure No hotel bookings, no luggage,no weather stress ? if it rains, you?re home by bedtime You get the jolt of adventure without the planning paralysis
Portishead won my heart with its ?every day is a holiday?views But what I didn? t realise is the views are a window to the rest of the world As I write this, I?m already planning my next extreme day trip Nice for an unforgettable day at the beach? Barcelona for a Flamenco dance class? Or maybe just a gelato and gondola ride in Venice??
Where I?m from,a two-hour drive is a work commute; here it?s enough for a passport stamp ? And at the end of the adventure,we have the beauty of Portishead to come home to

This month's Clevedon offering is a walk by one of our Clevedon readers, Ali Smart
Enjoy asked Ali to share her walk after seeing on social media, the lovely photos she'd taken while out walking.
"I love walking and love nature so it's not unusual for me to share photos of my surroundings on my Facebook page as I walk in and around Clevedon
On this occasion I walked from my Clevedon home on to Kenn Moor Drive, walking along the road until I came to Sercombe Park I entered Sercombe Park, where there?s a path on the right which took me in to Hazel Close Field On entering the field at this point, if you bear right you are walking towards the river Yeo, which you can see ahead of you after walking a few metres further ?
I walked on towards the river and where the path opens out I turn right, so am now walking parallel to the river It?s here that it hits me how completely surrounded by nature
I am Instead of concentrating on a destination, I stop to look around me and realise the vast amount of wildlife there is all along the river bank and I?m keen to capture it
on my phone to share ?
I then stroll along the river bank and come to Kenn Road, which I cross and, sticking with the river, I then come to Strode Road which I also cross, following the river on to the sluice gate Turning left here the path traverses the golf course, which is now on both sides of me
I follow the path ahead, which follows the sea wall, and then ascend slightly to where I can turn left towards Lower Strode Road Upon reaching the road, I bear left, walking a little way along the road until I reach the river again I then take the path back along the riverbank heading back towards home "

?Feathers McGraw is an iconic fan favourite and we?re thrilled to showcase this sculpture designed by Nick Park himself?said Larry Bush,CEO at Noah?s Ark Zoo Farm ?Gromit Unleashed 3 (art trail) is not only a fun day out but a vital fundraiser supporting children and families at Bristol Children?s Hospital We?re honoured to be involved and we hope our Toucan Bay beach does ?Feathers?proud!?

Make sure everything is labelled with your child?s name Uniforms and equipment don? t come cheap and if items get lost, having a name on things increases the chance of their return
By Tanya Marriott, owner of SoleLution shoe shop
The importance of having children?s feet measured on a regular basis goes way beyond making sure they can walk comfortably in their footwear Footwear is the only item of clothing that,if fitted poorly, can damage your health - ill fitting shoes can affect your entire physiology
Children's feet contain delicate bones and the rising number of youngsters facing foot health issues - many due to poorly fitting shoes - is concerning Ensuring your child has properly fitting footwear is essential, which is why the staff at SoleLution are fully trained to measure feet and guarantee a proper fit
including Start-rite,Angry Angels, Ricosta and Geox To avoid long queues during the back-to-school rush, visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon is usually quieter You can also book a fitting appointment on our website to make the experience much quicker and easier for both you and your child
At SoleLution,we believe in giving back For every pair of school shoes purchased this summer, the store will donate £1to the Educate the Kids charity, which supports children in a vulnerable community in Kenya,Africa,by providing educational opportunities
We offer a diverse selection of school shoe brands,
Natalie Konarzewska, strategic manager at The Nursery in Portishead, continues her advice for parents with children who will be starting school in September
Many children will be starting school for the first time next month and whilst reception teachers do an amazing job of focusing on developing self help skills, the more you prepare your child in the weeks leading up to starting school, the easier the move will be
In the July issue of Enjoy we talked about helping your child learn how to put their coat on,recognise their name and put their shoes on the right feet, ahead of going to school
When the new school term gets under way your child will be introduced to new routines and lunchtime and PEare two particular parts of the routine that can cause anxiety The more your child is prepared
for these times of the day,the happier they will be
Lunchtime at school can be overwhelming for a four-year-old, but talking to your child about lunchtime can be a huge help If they have a packed lunch ensure they can open their lunch box, peel a banana, open up their yoghurt and put a straw in a carton For school lunches they may need to make a decision about which school meal to eat, so talk about this Ensure your child can hold a tray, use a knife and fork, pour a cup of water and feed themselves independently These simple but important tips can help school meal times become much more enjoyable for those who have just started school
PEmay involve your child, dressing and undressing, organising their clothes so they can be found again and putting daps or trainers on the correct feet You can help get your child get used to this by laying out shorts, t shirt and daps and allowing them to get themselves changed Simple tips such as putting their shoes together and
putting their socks inside will help your child organise themselves and also be a huge help to the class teacher who usually has 30 pairs of socks to locate!
Buying the uniform together will help your child get excited about it Hang it somewhere so they can see it ? so again, they are familiar with it by the time they come to wear it Make sure everything is labelled with your child?s name Uniforms and equipment don? t come cheap and if items get lost, having a name on things increases the chance of their return
Lastly, please remember your attitude towards school will influence your child's feelings Be enthusiastic about the new experience and help them feel excited about what's to come, enjoying together the preparations for their next big adventure in the world of education
Tickenham farm owner Simon Dyer always loved cooking outside but who would have thought it could lead to a career in barbecuing?
Let?s face it barbecuing isn? t really a career is it? No one grows up saying they want to be a BBQ champ when they grow up do they? Or do they?
Former winner of ITV?s BBQ Champ programme, Simon Dyer?s love of cooking in the wild first raised its head when he was just a child He recalls sitting on Tickenham Hill with his friends and working out the best way to cook corn they had gathered from a farmer?s field They soaked the corn using water from a nearby water butt,Simon then made a pit with a fire in and pulled up a flat stone to put over the top ? they cooked the corn in its husks in the embers -
barbecue at its most basic Simon said:?We had a good meal and the pals I was with say I was destined to be a BBQ champ ?
It?s now 10 years since Sim on Dyer was crowned the nation?s cham pion griller in a five- part sum m er TV series hosted by celebrity Myleene Klass, he talked to Enjoy about his barbecue life
Winner of ITV?s 2015 BBQ Champ programme,Simon has a passion for cooking on the wild side Not content with concentrating on the art of barbecuing, the 62-year-old loves to build his own barbecues too
WHAT ISIT ABOUT BARBECUING THAT MADE YOU WANT TO MAKEIT YOURCAREER?
It?s more a way of life for me than a career,I?ve worked in all sorts of jobs in between, to help pay the bills, but I love live fire cooking I also like to reuse and recycle to make my own barbecues Barbecuing and live fire cooking are all about taming the fire to do what you want it to do and always being ready for any eventuality the fire may throw at you and then correct it
demonstrations and judging contests around the UK,while still competing in competitions I went on to work with some big names: top chefs, people who cook for royalty,Master Chef winners and judges? I?ve also demonstrated at many festivals ranging from Weymouth?s Seafood Festival to Chris Evans?Car Fest in Hampshire
These days I tend not to cater,I have a pretty full diary doing demonstrations at events across the UKand hosting live fire cooking stages, taking with me my team of highly skilled fire jockeys and providing live commentary as they all cook They say ?find a job doing something you love and you?ll never work a day in your life?and that?s exactly how I feel!
I get a real buzz out of building barbecues and smokers out of items that have been discarded,I find it very difficult to walk past a skip without taking a look inside to see if there?s anything I can use before it goes to landfill I use anything from bricks to old washing machines; I?ve used an old whiskey barrel too!
SO HOW DO YOU MAKEA LIVING OUT OF BARBECUING?
I started off doing local festivals, selling barbecued food and my closely guarded recipes became a huge hit I love the circuits ? the events are filled with fun, music, great vibes and of course good food! I also entered grilling competitions and started doing quite well After being selected for ITV?s BBQ Champ and then winning the contest, things really stepped up a notch I found myself doing personal appearances, giving barbecue cookery
To find out more about Simon and his live fire cooking, watch his videos on the Simon Dyer BBQ YouTube channel or catch him on his socials Simon is available for demonstrations for events, large or small and can be contacted through Facebook Messenger
sithefarmer Simon Dyer @simondyerbbq
FIRESAFETY:Even the smallest spark can cause a full on fire Never leave a BBQ unattended or to smoulder They should always be placed on a flat surface away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs and garden waste Be mindful of dry grass and overhanging branches, especially during hot,dry spells - a sudden gust of wind can quickly spread a fire Never use flammable liquids like petrol or paraffin to start your fire Firelighters are a much safer alternative Keep a bucket of water/sand or a garden hose nearby
We Brits are very much acquainted with outdoor cooking these days and the appeal of smoky vegetables, juicy meats and sizzling sausages keeps many of us devoted to our barbecues at this time of year
A perfect barbecue is a harmonious blend of the right ingredients, atmosphere and company, creating an unforgettable experience with a grill at the heart of it
The tantalising aroma of smoke rising through the air, sizzling meat on a hot grill, ambient lighting, and the vibrant atmosphere of music, laughter and conversation make it a total sensory experience
Another joy of barbecues is the simplicity they bring Unlike formal dining experiences that require extensive planning and preparation, barbecues are often spontaneous and laid-back A few friends, some good food and a grill are all you need to create a memorable gathering The informal nature of barbecues allows for flexibility; they can be elaborate affairs with multiple courses or simple cookouts with hot dogs and a salad Regardless of the scale, the warmth and joy of sharing a meal together remain constant
Classic options like juicy burgers, succulent ribs and tender chicken are always crowd-pleasers However, incorporating a variety of grilled vegetables and side salads ensures everyone can partake in the feast Marinades and rubs play a vital role, adding depth and flavour, while a well-crafted barbecue sauce can take meats to another level and fresh herbs and spices can enhance the overall taste
Equally important is the atmosphere surrounding the barbecue Setting up in a back garden or on the patio or deck allows guests to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine Comfortable seating, well thought out
lighting and cheerful decorations contribute to a warm and inviting environment, while music or games can add to the festive vibe, encouraging fun and interaction
The perfect barbecue is also defined by the company Inviting friends and family creates a sense of camaraderie that enhances the experience Sharing stories over sizzling grills and enjoying each other?s company fosters connections that go beyond the meal itself
Finally,no barbecue is complete without a refreshing drinks menu Whether it?s chilled lemonade, craft beers,or summer cocktails, drinks complement the flavours of the food and can keep the energy flowing
Barbecues have become a key part of Britain's summer for many of us,so make the most of it nowfire up the grill, gather your loved ones and enjoy this year?s barbecue season while you can Happy grilling!
Barbecues are the perfect occasion to showcase exciting recipes that tantalise the taste buds and elevate outdoor dining. While traditional options like burgers and hot dogs are always a hit, experimenting with unique flavours and ingredients can take your barbecue to the next level
For a delightful seafood option, spicy grilled prawn skewers are a must-try Marinate fresh prawns in a mixture of olive oil, garlic, lime juice and a blend of spices like cayenne pepper and smoked paprika Thread the prawns onto skewers between bell peppers and onions.Grill for just a few minutes on each side until the prawns are pink and slightly charred
Serve with a tangy dipping sauce made from yogurt, coriander and lime for a refreshing touch
Salads can be exciting too! Grilled peach and burrata salad combines sweet and savoury elements that create a perfect summer dish Halve fresh peaches and barbecue them until they have nice char marks Combine the grilled peaches with creamy burrata cheese, rocket and some toasted walnuts Drizzle with balsamic glaze and a sprinkle of sea salt for an elegant and delicious side dish that complements any barbecue spread
If you?re making your own burgers you can add spice to the mix or brush the burgers with something extra tasty during cooking Use ground beef, finely chopped onion, salt, pepper and a splash or Worcester sauce and then add whatever you fancy such as mustard, cayenne pepper and/or Cajun spice or even a spoonful of chutney
You can use a beaten egg to bind the mixture if you feel it necessary but our experience suggests it?s fine without Mix the ingredients together, divide it in to balls and then push them down in to patties
Grill on the barbecue and for extra taste just a minute before they are fully cooked brush with Tabasco to finish

These warm months are the perfect time to spend more time outdoors to discover the rich diversity of wildlife right on your doorstep Ecology and arboriculture consultancy,Arbtec, has revealed what to look out for this summer
Summer is a fantastic time of year to spot butterflies, with a wide range of species gracing the UK The peak butterfly season here continues through to late summer,so be sure to not miss out
The best locations to go butterfly spotting are woodlands, meadows, gardens and parks, especially in sunny and calm conditions,as butterflies are cold-blooded and are most active in warmth. To increase your chances, wear neutral colours that blend into the environment to avoid drawing attention to yourself,as well as staying still and patient when you do spot these incredible insects
While deer can be seen all year round, keep your eyes especially peeled in the warmer months since these graceful animals can be spotted in long grass and woodlands Deer can be found in woodlands and parklands across the UKand are most active in the early morning and late evening, making these the best times to spot these beautiful creatures Don? t forget that deer are shy,so ensure to avoid busy times, wear muted colours to blend into the environment and move slowly to avoid scaring them
Summer is the best time to spot flying bats in the UK, especially in the first half hour after sunset
To spot bats, visit areas that are free from light pollution and also woodlands and long bushy
istock com : evgenyatamanenko
hedgerows,as they can move between them without much exposure
Make sure to stay still and quiet to increase your chances of seeing them
The earlier sunrises and warmer temperatures of the summer make birds seem louder and livelier, which is ideal for bird watching.Keep on the lookout in the early morning and then the late afternoon to evening when birds become more active again
A good pair of binoculars is essential to identify the birds that you see,and you could even familiarise yourself with common bird songs and calls Remember to take full advantage of hides or observation points in parks and reserves to not startle birds
Mini-beast hunting is a fantastic activity for the summertime, especially for children, as it?s a great opportunity to get hands-on with their surroundings Make use of printable mini-beast spotter sheets, available online,to keep track of the bugs that you spot
Don? t forget to take a magnifying glass,as well as a spoon and clear container to help gently study the bugs that you spot

Always protect your skin from the sun - apply a high SPF,such as SPF30 or 50,after you cleanse but before you moisturise to fully protect your skin from damage

Manage oil and sweat - choose oil-free and non-comedogenic skincare products which are designed to prevent clogged pores, which can lead to product build-up,breakouts and blemishes
Gentle exfoliation - with our skin naturally renewing itself every 28 days, exfoliating two to three times a week removes dead skin cells, this not only reduces the risk of clogged pores, which can be more prevalent in the heat, but it also gives your skin an instant boost of glow Tips courtesy of www fresha com

Exercising in hot weather can be risky but with the right precautions you can stay active and safe
First and foremost, stay hydrated Drink water before, during and after your workout - even if you don? t feel thirsty Dehydration can set in quickly in high temperatures and lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke
Choose the right time of day to exercise - early morning or late evening, when it?s cooler and the sun is less intense, are the safest times Wear lightweight,light-coloured and moisture wicking clothing to help your body stay cool When you?re outside don? t forget a hat and sunscreen to protect your skin
If you feel dizzy, nauseous, excessively fatigued,or experience muscle cramps, stop immediately and find a cool place to rest Increase the amount of exercise you do in the heat gradually over several days
Opt for shaded routes or indoor workouts with air conditioning Heat affects everyone differently, especially children, older adults and those with health conditions
By planning ahead and staying alert to your body?s signals, you can enjoy safe, effective workouts even in the summer heat

By Lea Shrubshall, foot healthcare practitioner at Walnut Grove Clinic
The feet are particularly vulnerable in people with diabetes due to impaired circulation and sensation Small injuries, like a blister or crack, can go unnoticed and worsen quickly without proper care According to Diabetes UK,more than 169 amputations related to diabetes occur every week in the UKalone, many of which are preventable through early detection and routine care
THEVITALROLEOFDIABETIC FOOT CARE AND SKIN HEALTH
For individuals living with diabetes, proper foot care is a necessity.High blood glucose levels can damage nerves and reduce blood flow to the extremities, especially the feet This condition, known as diabetic neuropathy, increases the risk of foot ulcers, infections and in severe cases, amputations Fortunately, with proactive foot health routines and the right skincare products, many of these risks can be significantly minimised.
The first step in managing diabetic foot health is daily inspection This includes checking for any cuts, swelling, redness,or signs of infection Individuals should also be aware of any numbness, tingling,or changes in skin temperature, which can indicate nerve damage Involving a foot health practitioner or podiatrist in regular foot care is key, they can detect subtle issues before they escalate
THEIMPORTANCEOFSKIN
Diabetes can cause the skin on the feet to become dry and prone to cracking, especially around the heels Cracked skin is not only uncomfortable but
can act as an entry point for bacteria and fungi
Proper moisturisation is essential and this is where targeted products come into play Unlike general lotions, diabetic foot creams must be non-greasy,fast-absorbing,and effective at deeply hydrating the skin while minimizing the risk of fungal infection Look for products that are urea-based,as urea helps attract and retain moisture in the skin
DERMATONICS: SCIENCE- BACKED SUPPORT FORFOOT HEALTH
Dermatonics has emerged as a leading name in diabetic skincare, offering a range of products formulated specifically for diabetic and sensitive skin Their creams are NHS-approved and widely recommended by podiatrists One of their most popular offerings is the Dermatonics Once Heel Balm, which contains 25%urea and natural ingredients like Manuka honey It is designed to soften rough skin, repair cracks, and restore the natural barrier of the skin without leaving a greasy residue WALNUTGROVE CLINIC ISPORTISHEAD?SLOCALSTOCKISTFOR DERMATRONICSPRODUCTS!?
Another notable product is the Dermatonics Soothing Foot Cream, which helps relieve itchy, dry feet - a common complaint among those with diabetes These products are dermatologically tested, and many are suitable for people with eczema or psoriasis, adding to their appeal for individuals managing multiple skin sensitivities
BENEFITSOFREGULARFOOT
While home care is crucial, professional foot health check-ups offer an added layer of protection Foot health practitioners (FHPs) and podiatrists can assess circulation, nerve function and skin integrity, identifying concerns before they become serious Annual foot screenings are recommended for all individuals with diabetes, with more frequent visits advised for those with a history of ulcers or neuropathy Regular visits also provide an opportunity to tailor foot care routines, get guidance on footwear and receive early interventions like debridement of calluses or toenail trimmingprocedures that,if done improperly at home, could lead to complications
DIABETIC FOOT CARECHECKLIST
DAILY:
Inspect your feet every day for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling,or nail changes; wash feet gently with warm (not hot) water and mild soap - avoid soaking; dry thoroughly, especially between the toes to prevent fungal infections; apply a urea-based moisturiser once to heels and soles (not between toes); wear clean, soft socks - preferably seamless and moisture-wicking; use well-fitting shoes with plenty of
toe room and avoid walking barefoot
WEEKLY:
Trim toenails straight across and file sharp edges (if unsure, have it done by a FHPor podiatrist); check footwear inside and out for stones, seams,or damage

Tell me I'm not the only one who comes away from a holiday, full of inspiration and a determination to keep the holiday vibe in full swing? Be it a short weekend in Devon or a week or two in another country, that relaxed feeling is intoxicating and while holidays are becoming something of a luxury around here,I took a look at ways I could recreate that holiday vibe at home and enjoy my very own staycation here in Portishead...
1.
The first thing that comes to mind, wether you're under the stars in a simple tent, booked into a hotel room or making use of an Airbnb,is the lack of clutter Its amazing how much more relaxed you feel when you're not surrounded buy life's 'stuff'! So,once I've donated the stuff I really don't need to a charity shop I plan on storing away things that come out occasionally and making space for essentials in cupboards and drawers out of sight Removing, reducing and finally relaxing giving my home less clutter to clean will give it more of a light and airy holiday space feel
2.
Holidays are all about exploring new places and spending time with those we love - with busy lives this gets forgotten in the hustle and bustle.Try to take time out for exploration and doing something different Why not meet up at the end of the day for a swim in the open air pool,or a walk through Eastwood, maybe get together for a drink on the marina before heading home and make plans to have fun at the weekend - follow the Gromit Unleashed trial this August or pack a picnic and take off to the beach for the day, explore what's on your doorstep
3. Tx
When you finally return from your day out, tired and content,a holiday home offers comfort and simplicity Add some comfortable accessories to your home like giant plush cushions and cosy soft blankets, perfect for snuggling up after a fun packed day Make sure there are fluffy towels in bright summer colours at hand and soaps that smell like oranges and lemons in the bathroom Wind down with soft warm lighting, ditching the overhead lights for smaller table lamps and strings of lights creating a fun warm atmosphere And finally, why not create your own family holiday play list of summer songs and maybe crack open some card games while sipping on your favourite cocktail/mocktail No suitcase required and no stressful flights to catch - happy staycation!
Since the development of the marina in Portishead, the town has experienced a revival of visitors afloat If you chat to those visiting or living on the water here, you will notice they are a fairly close-knit community
Enjoy looked in to the pros and cons of living on the water
Living on a houseboat offers a unique lifestyle with perks like fresh air, connection with nature, waterfront views and a strong sense of community and adventure, but it also comes with challenges like limited space, ongoing maintenance and potential weather-related issues It's crucial to investigate all this before committing to this lifestyle change
for short-term stays
Researching and contacting marinas or local councils is vital to ensure you have a safe and secure place to dock
Living on a houseboat encourages a minimalist lifestyle With limited space, residents learn to prioritise what they truly need This simplification can lead to a more meaningful existence for some, allowing them to focus on experiences rather than material possessions
Houseboats come in various shapes and sizes, from traditional narrow boats to modern floating homes
Narrow boats are popular for their suitability for the extensive canal network in the UK,while other types include barges and wide beam boats that offer more living space Each option has its own advantages,so choice will depend on individual lifestyle and preferences
Living on a houseboat involves adhering to various regulations You will need a boat license from the Canal and River Trust (CRT) if you plan to navigate the waterways Additionally, residential moorings are subject to specific rules, including costs and conditions It?s essential to understand the local laws and regulations governing houseboat living to avoid fines or eviction
Securing a good mooring is crucial There are two main types:residential moorings, where you can live year-round and visitor moorings, which are typically
We noticed that Portishead independent estate agent,Sue Sadler, alongside houses, bungalows and apartments, has taken a number of houseboats to market over the past year or more,in both Portishead and Bristol,so we asked her if this was unusual She said:?While I don? t specialise in boat sales I do have a great deal of knowledge of this market and so I am happy to help More and more people are looking for alternative ways to live as rents and house prices rise and become unachievable for some,as a result boat life is becoming very popular, which I?m sure is why I have been selling so many boats over the past five years or so I?d be delighted to help anyone wanting to buy or sell a houseboat, just give me a call on 0117 462 5600 ?
In conclusion, the joys of living on a houseboat in the UKare numerous, from the connection to nature and scenic views to the sense of community and adventure It?s not for everyone, but for some it?s a case of living the dream!

August is one of those months where we can concentrate on maintaining our gardens Focus on watering regularly, continue deadheading to encourage more blooms and stay on top of weeding
August is a good time to plan ahead too You can take cuttings from salvias, penstemons and pelargonium's,all of which are easy to propagate in this way Take your cuttings from non-flowering shoots,as they will root more easily and snip off a shoot about 10-15cm just above a bud Trim off the lowest leaves, pinch out the growing tip and place three or four around the edge of a 9cm pot in multipurpose compost mixed with a little grit for drainage Keep the cuttings protected in a greenhouse or cold frame over the winter to plant out the following year
the year or next year You can do this with nigella, aquilegia, calendula, hardy geraniums and papaver

Now is a good time to collect seeds, choose a dry day and using a paper bag put the seeds or flower heads in and pinching the top of the bag, leave them to dry for a few weeks in an airtight container with some silica gel (to stop moisture and rotting) You should then be able to shake off the seeds and save them in a labelled envelope for sowing either later in
As a keen gardener,I love to visit other gardens for inspiration The Horticultural Society,of which I am a member, recently visited Kiftsgate Court in Chipping Campden where we had the added bonus of seeing Father Brown being filmed! The garden is absolutely stunning and also has its very own rambling rose - Rosa Kiftsgate This summer I also took in the Portishead in Bloom Open Gardens, Bedminster Secret Gardens and Tickenham Open Gardens All of the gardens were so different in scale and style but each of them had something to catch the eye It takes a lot of effort to get your garden ready for an open day so if you have an opportunity to visit other people's gardens, particularly if they are raising money for a good cause, please do so It?s a great way to obtain inspiration
Portishead Horticultural Society, which organises the annual Spring Show and the Portishead Sum m er Show, hosts m onthly m eetings on the second Tuesday of the m onth at The Folk Hall in Portishead High Street, usually starting at 7 30pm The m eetings include a guest speaker to offer inspiration, practical advice and guidance on all m anner of gardening problem s At the August m eeting, guest speaker Abigail Wills will be talking about ?Som erset - a County of Glorious Gardens' Full details of the speakers can be found on the Portishead Horticultural Society?s website

Salary sacrifice is simply an arrangement between an employer and an employee whereby the employee agrees to a reduction in their cash remuneration (salary or a bonus) in lieu of an employer pension contribution being made to their pension scheme
Salary sacrifice can alter an employee?s remuneration package to a more tax efficient structure,at no additional cost to either employer or employee More importantly, salary sacrifice can generate higher pension contributions than if the employee opts to make the contributions themselves
A formal agreement (normally in writing) is required between the employer and employee, confirming the reduction in remuneration in exchange for an employer contribution of at least the same amount being made to a pension scheme As long as the employee enters into such
a formal agreement, the terms and conditions of employment are varied and no national insurance (NI) or income tax liability arises on the non-cash benefit
It is important the agreement is structured correctly otherwise the salary sacrifice could fail For instance,if the employee has the right to give up the non-cash benefit at any time and revert to the higher salary, the benefit may be deemed to be earnings and incur income tax and NI accordingly
Generally,HMRC will accept that a sacrifice is effective if the agreement to vary the contract is in place for 12 months or more, but HMRC also allows opting out without adverse tax consequences in the event that your financial circumstances alter significantly as a result of lifestyle changes such as:marriage, divorce or a partner becoming redundant or pregnant
Salary sacrifice,an arrangement whereby an employee gives up the right to an amount of future earnings or bonus, in return for the employer paying an employer contribution to their pension arrangement, will require the employee?s contract of employment to be changed and formally agreed between the employee and the employer, for example in a letter A copy of this agreement letter should be kept with the employee?s original contract of employment
If you would like to find out more about salary sacrifice or require financial planning advice,we are here to help, please do get in touch without any obligation
The value of a pension will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and the value can therefore go down as well as up You may get back less than you invested
The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances
If you sacrifice some of your salary it can reduce other benefits from your employer and affect any mortgage application

Okay so I?ve sat on the fence so far on the reopening of the Portishead to Bristol railway line, but I have to admit, after all my years working as a local news reporter and editor,it is now looking more likely than ever that it could become a reality
And so it appears the long-awaited return of the Portisheadto Bristol railway line has been given the official green light by the Department for Transport
The final £276million has been approved with a view to re-opening the line in 2028 with stations at Portishead and Pill Work is expected to start in spring/summer 2026
The reopening of the line, which was axed in the 1960s during Beeching cuts, should reduce travel times by up to 50%and help reduce car commuting and the dreaded traffic build up during peak travel times
Councillor Mike Bell,Leader of North Somerset Council, said:?When it opens, the line will offer its first passenger trains in generations, with journey times of just 23 minutes providing more sustainable access to jobs, education and an estimated £43 million in economic growth every year
?We know how important this scheme is to local people and we?re excited that we can now depart on this journey and finally deliver full steam ahead ?
The Black Horse (The Kicker) in Clapton in Gordano has been named one of Britain?s top 500 pubs in the Telegraph?s best pub guide Congratulations ? well deserved!
