SOLAR PANELS FOR LIDO

Outdoor pool shines a light on sustainability

Solar panels converting sunlight in to electric and heat at Portishead Open Air Pool are now live!

In 2024 the trust managing the seafront facility received a £140,000 grant from the Swimming Pool Support Fund, administered by Sport England,to help with the installation of solar panels, with the aim to reduce the amenity?s electricity bills and lower its carbon footprint

Barbara Thatcher,a volunteer who has supported the trust that manages the pool since its inception, said:?The guys at Portishead Roofing repaired and future-proofed the roof in preparation for the new panels and then our friends at Solarsense came in to install a top-tier array of photovoltaic panels, designed to harness the sun's energy and generate electricity to power our facility While the weather at this time of year isn? t exactly ideal for solar power, we?re still able to produce a respectable 7kW of energy But here's the really exciting part, come summer,we expect to be generating up to 36kW on a sunny day! That?s a massive energy saving and a significant step toward reducing our reliance on fossil fuels?

The next stage in the lido?s sustainability journey is the installation of solar thermal collectors on the terraces These will help heat the pool water naturally during the summer months, reducing the need for additional heating and further lowering the pool?s energy consumption

Barbara added:?None of this would have been

possible without the incredible support we?ve received from a number of organisations and we?d like to thank:North Somerset Council for its backing; Sport England for its generous funding; Portishead Roofing for the hard work in preparing our roof and Solarsense for their expertise in installing the solar panels

Thanks to their collective efforts,we?re not just future-proofing our building? we?re ensuring that our community facility will continue to thrive for generations to come ?

ABOUT THEPOOL

Sitting right on Portishead seafront,Portishead Open Air Pool is a wonderful outdoor swimming pool, heated throughout its summer season from April to September

Complete with extensive sun terraces, toddler pool and tuck shop, this unique leisure facility was saved by volunteers in the local community and is now run as a charitable trust and staffed largely by volunteers It is open seven days a week at the height of the season and is home to school swimming galas and charity swims and events It has also been used for life saving training and other water related activities and instruction

Outside the season it offers cold water swimming, including moonlight swimming

Adjacent to the pool is the Café Lido, also run as part of the trust by volunteers www portisheadopenairpool org uk

TREE-CYCLING

Two great ways to dispose of your Christmas tree

What will you be doing with your Christmas tree after the celebrations?

Here are a couple of ideas:

St Peter?s Hospice offers a hassle-free Christmas tree collection in exchange for a donation Simply sign up, leave your tree outside and helpful volunteers will take it off your hands between 10th -12th January 2025 Search Christmas tree collection on the website www stpetershospice org

Alternatively,Noah?s Ark Zoo Farm, just outside Portishead, welcomes recycled Christmas trees for animal enrichment The woodchips are used in the Andean Adventures exhibit, providing different scents for resident spectacled bears, while the elephants, not only consume whole trees, they also enjoy

searching their way through piles of chippings for buried treats In addition, keepers bury food for the meerkats under the mulch, which simulates hunting in the wild

Trees can be dropped off where indicated in the main car park during opening hours between 3rd-12th January www noahsarkzoofarm co uk

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

Local radio, TVand podcast guru Ian Downsy Downs looks at how to survive the January blues in Portishead

Ah,January in Portishead The sparkles of our beloved Christmas lights are rapidly fading as we face the new year?s cold, damp air and cope with the guilt of consuming our body weight in Quality Street, which is much harder to do these days now the tubs are so much smaller, don? t you find?

The New Year?s resolutions you enthusiastically scribbled down on December 31st have already been downgraded to ?aspirations?and because your boss ?kindly?paid you in the third week of December ? January?s payday seems light years away You can? t even bounce a few cheques to get you through the month these days thanks to contactless!

afford, laugh at the persistent seagulls trying to steal your snack and congratulate yourself for being outside instead of bingeing Netflix (for now)

Make Peace with the Weather

Rain is Portishead?s unofficial mascot in January Invest in a waterproof coat that screams ?practical yet stylish? Embrace the rain; call it ?atmospheric?as you squint through the drizzle at Battery Point Don? t fight it? accept it,like you accept the slow Wi-Fi at your local café

Drink the Coffee Shops Dry

Let?s face it,January is no picnic, but fear not, here?s my guide for making it through the most depressing month of the year (probably)

Master the Art of Walking

Portishead marina in January is? brisk Bundle up in every woolly item you own and channel your inner BBC nature presenter as you stomp around the docks Admire the boats you can? t

January is the perfect excuse to become a regular at Portishead?s cosy coffee spots Grab a flat white from Coffi Lab or warm your hands with a steaming hot chocolate from Shanicatti Don? t worry about the calories? it?s too cold for salads, and you deserve this If you work from home, work from a coffee shop instead and save money on your heating Whist you?re enjoying your beverage, listen to the Enjoy Portishead Podcast too for the latest gossip, errr I mean news about our town Download it wherever you get your podcast!

Treat the High Street Like an Adventure

Portishead High Street is your January saviour Browse the charity shops, grab a pasty from Parsons and stock up on feel-good snacks from Waitrose Channel your inner explorer:?What treasures will I find today?

Lean Into Your Inner Hermit

Sometimes, the best way to deal with January is to lean in Stock up on blankets, light a few candles and hibernate in style Binge-watch everything you?ve missed while eating local takeaway Bonus points if you never change out of your pyjamas!

Plan Your Escape

Nothing brightens the January gloom like planning your next trip even if it?s just a jaunt to Bristol for a day of shopping (after January pay day obviously), having something on the calendar helps Or,if you?re

feeling extra ambitious, dream about a beach holiday somewhere that isn? t Weston-super-Mare Alternatively put the date for Portishead Carnival in your diary (14th June),and look forward to its return!

So,here?s the deal:Portishead may not offer tropical sunshine in January, but it does provide charm, community, and a reason to slow down Survive January? Nah? thrive in it Or at least muddle through with a pasty in one hand and a latte in the other

CARNIVAL HISTORY

Readers are invited to share their carnival memories

The new Portishead Carnival committee has set up a carnival history page on the event?s website and is appealing to Portishead residents to share their memories and knowledge to help make it a comprehensive account of the town?s carnival through the years

A newspaper cutting in 1904 reports the third carnival took place that year, so it looks as though the event began in 1902 Do you know any different? If so they?d love to hear from you

Saz Casey, the carnival committee member who maintains the website (among many other things), said:?We want as much information as we can get on the history of Portishead Carnival We are publishing newspaper cuttings and photos as they are sent to us and we hope this will turn in to a well

Tribute to Anita

Enjoy Portishead is very grateful to its sponsor Wright-Morgan Tim Wright, from Wright-Morgan,approached us when he heard we were planning a Portishead magazine and offered his company?s support from the outset, being aware of the rising costs and difficulties faced by print media today and also in recognition of the support a publication like this offers in promoting

local businesses to the community

Tim?s community spirit is no surprise as not only did he grow up in Portishead, his late mum Anita (maiden name Mapstone), was a Portishead girl and one who was children?s carnival queen back in the day!

We are delighted to share this newspaper cutting from 1951and a photo from 1952 taken when Anita handed her crown over to the new children?s carnival queen,Monica Holmes (now Smith ? Mon from the Phoenix Bar)

WALKIN? THE DOG

Enjoy reader Lorraine Hopkins shares a dog walk that reminds her of her childhood

I grew up in Redcliffe Bay in the 1970s and below our house were woods and little chalets accessed by a track called Heaven's Lane

I now live closer to town but before Christmas my mum and I jumped in the car with her dog Buster and headed up to revisit some old haunts

We parked close to Redcliffe Bay Hall and walked behind a small block of flats through to Little Halt

When I was about eight-years-old Little Halt was a large piece of land with one property standing alone in an overgrown garden As kids we used to play there, running through the ferns that were taller than us,making tunnels and pathways as we went Since then Little Halt has been opened up and developed and is now a pretty road with houses on either side Buster is pulling on his lead as we head to the top of Little Halt and follow the road down as it winds to the left and then the right As you get near to the bottom,on the left you see a little pathway with a handrail Following the pathway down,we cross Halliwell Road and arrive at the bottom of Hillside Road Crossing the road to the bench opposite the coastal path is now straight ahead We take a right turn and can now let Buster off the lead Just like us kids,he loves to run through the ferns and disappears in the bushes and trees along the right hand side of the path He can have a really good run along the pathway heading towards Portishead Yacht and Sailing Club It's a lovely walk through the trees with the channel on your left and after about 10 or 15 minutes we reach a bench, just before the sailing club, where mum decides to sit while I take Buster down onto Sugar Loaf Beach to play ball

I remember when we were children mum and dad would bring us down here in the winter when it was quiet, with a with a box of sandwiches and a flask of tea My brother and I would spend hours looking under rocks trying to find crabs and other creepy crawlies

Once Buster has had a good run around we head back to the bench where mum is now ready to make the walk back, which of course is now up hill! You can either head back the way we came or take the cut above the sailing club to Nichols Road, which will bring you out on Nore Rd With the Windmill to our left,we turn right and head towards Fedden Village which of course back in the 70's was the Nautical School. We walk past the church and slowly wind our way up Nore Rd until we reach Little Halt again on our right and back to the car By now all three of us are ready for a cup of tea!

If you have a favorite dog walk you would like to share please em ail editor enjoyportishead@gm ail com

ABOUT BEMOREBEN

Be More Ben was established in

2018 by Portishead couple Shane and Sarah Pritchard following the death of their eight-year-old son, Ben

After he died, they found there was little support for parents locally, even less for siblings and nothing at all for other family members What was available was short-term or included formal meetings once or twice a year

Shane and Sarah were desperate to ensure that no parents should face losing a child alone Be More Ben enables families to meet with others who completely understand what it?s like when your child dies Parents and families can build their own support networks, access counselling and other therapies and have opportunities to create

new memories whilst remembering their child who has died

Be More Ben supports the whole family affected by the death of a child from birth up to the age of 18,find out more at www bemoreben org

NEW YEAR NEW CAREER?

Childcare expert and owner of The Nursery,Jackie Hardie,is on a mission to provide inspiring opportunities for those working in early years development and education

Jackie has spent many years putting her heart and soul in to helping childcare providers around the world offer the very best in early years development and education She is also intent on providing inspiring and incredible opportunities for those working in the industry

The former teacher, advisor and Ofsted inspector talked to ENJOYabout her career in early years and the opportunities she now wants to provide for others

"I have a passion for the education of young children, which is why I trained as a teacher, specialising in early years I loved my job and the children I taught but felt I could do so much more Career progression, eventually to head teacher, did not excite me I wanted to make a difference to young children?s lives through helping to improve childcare facilities and early years education With this in mind I explored a number of different areas where I could use my passion and expertise to inspire others and really make a difference. This ranged from working as an early years inspector to help ensure high standards were achieved,to running my own consultancy, training and assisting schools and childcare facilities around the globe to reach outstanding standards

The Nursery we like to look way beyond standard training courses and workshops (which of course, have their place) to provide as many exciting and inspiring opportunities for our staff as we can.

Over the years at The Nursery we have given team members opportunities to work in ski resorts in the Alps, with animals on farms, develop dance and drama sessions and mindfulness We encourage team members to bring their interests and areas of expertise to their role,so if they have a musical talent or are an artist they can bring this in to the setting If they love sport and dance, they can take up a coaching role within their position; there are endless opportunities for staff to develop at The Nursery, while hugely benefitting the children in our care

Recruiting the right people is vital in creating and maintaining a happy workforce, which results in a happy and successful setting.Once you have found the right staff for your business, encouraging and supporting them needs to be a priority; this is why at

At The Nursery we always aim to employ more staff than is required so that we can allow team members to explore opportunities outside the setting as part of their continued professional development The most important thing is to find the right people with the passion and dedication to deliver unique opportunities and help create memorable childhoods for those in our care From trainees to qualified teachers,we invite anyone interested in joining us to get in touch to discuss opportunities at The Nursery; just email recruit@thenursery uk com "

Growing up, Kate Brandon never im agined she would be a physio and yoga teacher, blending neuroscience with m ovem ent, helping people live better lives Her journey has been anything but straightforward, but she says it?s been the m aking of her

Kate Brandon describes her journey as a ?love story about finding the best career in the world,?this month she tells Enjoy readers how her life changed and how she now supports others holistically

Kate started her career with a Master of Science Nursing degree While she thrived during placements and loved working with patients, she never felt inspired by the course,so,she took a leap of faith and switched to a Bachelor?s degree in

WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE? INTERVIEW

physiotherapy From the first lecture, she was hooked? anatomy, physiology, the intricate workings of the human body,Kate describes it as feeling like piecing together the most fascinating puzzle That said, she wasn? t your typical physio-in-the-making She wasn? t sporty; she hated PEat school, running was torture and exercise wasn? t exactly her thing She was learning all the theory but wasn? t exactly living it That however all soon changed

Physio and yoga teacher Kate Brandon didn? t always practice what she teaches, today however, she absolutely does ? she tells Tracey Fowler why

WHEN DID YOU START PRACTICING WHAT

YOU TEACH?

In my final year of uni life knocked me sideways,I lost my dad,my grandparents and a dear friend They died separately, all suddenly and within six months. It was a hard, chaotic time I shared a house with six boys from uni, drank too much, ate too much and generally neglected my body I share this because it?s part of the story that led me to where I am today

After graduating in 2006,I worked as a massage therapist in the French Alps The mountains, fresh air, the skiing and a bit of yoga started to shift things for me Finally,I found ways to move that didn? t feel like punishment Yoga became a sort of therapy, helping me process the grief I carried for those I had lost I

was now treating my body with much more respect

Returning to the UK,I landed a rotational physiotherapy NHSjob, eventually specialising in MSK(musculoskeletal care) It was a whirlwind: busy clinics, steep learning curves, and the challenge of balancing patient needs with NHStime pressures Despite the intensity,I loved it - amazing training,a brilliant physio team and the privilege of helping people heal

YOU DON?T WORK FORTHENHSNOW, WHAT CHANGED?

Fast forward almost a decade,in 2014 life took another u-turn Clinics were busier, patients more complex and burnout was creeping in I was happily engaged to Mike, the love of my life and had taken a six-month career break to find headspace from work, to travel and I wanted to train as a yoga teacher Yoga had been transformative for me,and I wanted to share it with others

After a month's yoga course in Thailand I travelled to Myanmar and received a crackly phone call from Mike that turned my world upside down He?d gone to the GPfeeling unwell, been admitted to hospital the same day and was diagnosed with leukaemia The odds were grim? 50/50 survival What followed was a two-year rollercoaster of multiple chemo rounds,a stem cell transplant, countless other treatments and more hospital stays than I can count Amid the chaos,I found yoga again It became my anchor, helping me navigate grief, fear and stress It also of course helped me become a better physio? more in tune with how the body and mind are intertwined in so many ways I completed my yoga teacher training that year in Bristol and started teaching anatomy, physiology and pain science to new yoga trainees

HOW DID MIKEGET ON?

It was a fight for survival He had a molecular relapse in 2015 (small relapse) but various treatments kept things under control for the next year Then In 2016, we got the dreaded call we?d had twice already,an awkward tone of voice from the nurse, urgent same day appointment requested - we knew what it meant I cancelled my patients for the day,met Mike at the hospital and here we heard the words I?ll never forget:?There is nothing more we can do,all we can offer is palliative care, just weeks left to live ? There it was - breeze block to the face.

Still determined to fight,I asked about a pioneering

treatment I had heard about in the UScalled CART Cell Therapy The response was crushing:?It?s only been used on children,it would cost a million pounds and it probably won? t work, you need to plan for the end ?

It was actually only just under half a million pounds we needed,we found out later

Refusing to give up,I created a WhatsApp group with my phenomenal friends and told them:?We need to raise a million pounds?Without hesitation, they sprang into action Together,we launched a viral social media campaign,# donate4mike and miraculously raised half a million pounds in less than two weeks!

Then came another miracle:Mike was accepted onto a CART-cell trial at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia

The treatment was brutal? intensive care, brain swelling and the kind of medical chaos that felt like we were living a nightmare But 28 days after his first infusion,Mike?s bone marrow biopsy revealed the impossible:from 90%leukemic cells there were now zero He was finally in remission!

Three years later, after four rounds of IVF,we welcomed our miracle twins,Bruno and Elodie

After four rounds of IVF Kate and Mike welcomed miracle twins

DO YOU THINK THIS EXPERIENCECHANGED YOU?

Without doubt this journey was life-changing It taught me resilience in the face of unimaginable challenges, the importance of embracing joy in the everyday and the power of living intentionally

It has redefined who I am and how I support others Mindset is everything I?ve learned that how we think, speak to ourselves, and face life?s challenges profoundly impacts our lives Not just in moments of crisis but in the everyday Our mindset shapes how we approach adversity, how we steer our life decisions and how we care for ourselves, both physically and mentally

Today,I practice what I preach, prioritising movement, strength, sleep, nourishing food, mindfulness and connection These aren? t just habits? they?re the foundation of a joyful, resilient life

Moments like seeing my husband simply lie flat and breathe easily or laughing with our children ground me in gratitude and remind me how far we?ve come

Through my work blending physiotherapy and yoga,I help others reclaim their health - whether by reducing pain, reconnecting with their bodies, shifting their mindset or building strength for life?s challenges

I?m on a mission to uplift - leading workshops and training yoga teachers Teaching about back pain, pelvic floor rehab and nervous system health is all part of a deeper purpose:spreading knowledge that transforms lives

At the heart of it all,I?m grateful? to wake up next to my husband, hear my twins giggle and do work that fulfils me It?s been a winding road, but I believe it?s led me to exactly where I?m meant to be

I hope my story inspires people to embrace resilience and take small, intentional steps toward a healthier, more fulfilling life If you?re ready to start, join me by signing up for my newsletter and enjoying a free 15-minute Yoga Nidra for Sleep

IT?SNEVER TOO LATE TO VOLUNTEER

Tracey Fowler meets four mature ladies who embarked on volunteering in Africa for the first time in 2024

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and make new friends; I discovered a fantastic example of this when I met up with four ladies who have become firm friends since volunteering in Kenya for the first time just a year ago.

The ladies, all aged between 75 and 85,embarked on a new adventure in January 2024 when they joined Tanya Marriott from SoleLution shoe shop in Portishead High Street, and her friends on their annual trip to Jolaurabi School in Mombasa,Kenya,to fit hundreds of pairs of pre-worn shoes donated by customers.Tanya has been working with the charity Educate The Kids, which set up and supports the Jolaurabil School, offering the children a hand up through education, rather than a hand out, since 2017

Joy is Tanya?s mum and over the years has enjoyed hearing all about the vulnerable community Tanya and her volunteer friends have been visiting annually and how lots of people in Portishead help to support them by way of donations and sponsorship Joy was already sponsoring a child in the village and had longed to go and experience helping in the school herself; however being in her seventies she feared she might slow the younger volunteers down

Barbara, the oldest of the four ladies, attended a talk by Tanya about the charity She told me:?After the talk my husband asked Tanya if I was too old to volunteer as he?d seen the look on my face when Tanya had been talking and he knew I?d love to go out to help Tanya said age was no barrier,I would be well looked after and there was plenty I could do I knew they needed each volunteer to take two

suitcases of shoes out to the school and I felt that even if I didn? t do much else to help,I could at least do that.?

Barbara signed up to volunteer on the self funded trip straight away!

When Tanya told her mum about Barbara,Joy no longer had the excuse of worrying that as an older lady she might slow the others down as now there was someone older than her going So,Joy signed up for the January 2024 trip, feeling more confident now that she wasn? t the only more mature lady among them

Coral and Christina both got to know about Educate the Kids and the children from Jolaurabi School when their respective daughters hosted teachers who accompanied the Singing Children of Africa (the

Jolaurabi School choir) when it visited Portishead as part of a fundraising tour of the UK As a result they decided to sponsor a child and the volunteering trip would give them the opportunity, not only to offer assistance to the shoe project, but to meet the children they sponsor too

In January 2024 the four senior citizens joined a group of volunteers from North Somerset and Bristol and headed to Africa

All four ladies helped sort shoes ready for Tanya and the experienced shoe fitters to allocate and fit shoes

for each child in the school

They also sorted new socks for all the children, helping the younger ones to put them on When they weren? t

volunteering they visited the village where the children lived The living conditions of the families were very primitive but they say there was a lot of love and fun in the village

The ladies also managed to take a little time for themselves, with Barbara ticking riding a motorbike off her bucket list, accompanied by Joy

Would they do it again? ?Absolutely?say all four of them It was an exciting and rewarding adventure!

Second hand school shoes in good condition can be donated at SoleLution for the next trip to Jolurabi School The Singing Children of Africa are planning a UKtour again this year and Tanya will be looking for host families for the children and teachers Anyone interested in finding out more can do so by emailing enquiries@solelution co uk or popping in to the shop to talk to Tanya You can find out more about Educate the Kids and about sponsoring a child at www educatethekids com

The key is consistency and finding activities that feel enjoyable, rather than focusing on achieving a specific goal

STEP UP FOR H EALTH

The Importance of Foot Care by Lea Shrubshall,a foot healthcare practitioner at Walnut Grove Clinic

When we think of health, our feet are often the last thing on our minds, but taking care of them is crucial, not just for staying mobile, but for our overall well-being Foot problems, from fungal nail infections to issues linked with diabetes can lead to serious consequences if ignored. This article sheds light on the benefits of foot health care and how paying attention to your feet can improve your quality of life

The average person walks around 100,000 miles in a lifetime? no small feat! Our feet carry us through each day, providing balance, mobility and independence; however, they often bear the brunt of neglect and everyday wear and tear.Ignoring foot issues can lead to discomfort, disability and in some cases, severe health problems that impact more than just your feet Maintaining good foot health is essential to living a healthy and active life

1 FUNGALNAILINFECTIONS: THEHIDDEN DISCOMFORT

Fungal nail infections,or onychomycosis, are more common than many people realise Characterised by thickened, discoloured and sometimes painful nails, this condition is more than a cosmetic concern? it can lead to chronic pain and further infections if left untreated In severe cases, fungal infections can cause nails to separate from the nail bed, creating an environment ripe for bacteria

Treating fungal infections often requires anti-fungal creams, medications,or laser treatments, depending on the severity Prevention is also key, with regular cleaning and drying of feet, breathable shoes and avoiding damp communal areas without protective footwear

2 DIABETIC FOOT CARE: PREVENTION IS BETTERTHAN CURE

Diabetes can significantly affect foot health due to poor circulation and nerve damage (neuropathy) Reduced blood flow impedes the body?s ability to heal and nerve damage can make injuries go unnoticed until they worsen, which can lead to ulcers, infections and in extreme cases, amputation Consistent foot care can prevent severe

complications, reducing the risk of life-altering surgeries.

Exercises, proper footwear and even simple massage can enhance blood flow, supporting foot health and mobility

Routine care for diabetic feet involves regular checkups with a podiatrist, daily self-inspections and wearing specialised shoes or insoles that prevent pressure points By staying vigilant, people with diabetes can lead active, comfortable lives and minimise foot-related complications

3 VERRUCAS: A SMALLBUT STUBBORN PROBLEM

Verrucas,or plantar warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and commonly appear on the soles of the feet They can be painful, particularly when they develop on pressure points like the heels or balls of the feet Verrucas are often contagious and spread in communal areas like pools or gym locker rooms

Treatment options for verrucas include over-the-counter remedies, cryotherapy (freezing the verruca),or even laser treatment It?s also wise to practice good hygiene by wearing flip-flops in communal showers and keeping feet clean and dry

Treating verrucas can relieve the discomfort and difficulty associated with pressure on sensitive areas of the feet and stop them from spreading to other areas of the foot or to other people

THEOVERALLBENEFITS OF GOOD FOOT CARE

Beyond treating specific conditions, regular foot care has benefits that enhance your quality of life, including:

- Improved posture and balance - healthy feet support proper alignment, making movement more comfortable and reducing the risk of falls

- Better mobility and independence - without foot pain, people are more likely to stay active and independent, especially as they age

- Increased self-esteem - feeling confident about the appearance of your feet can make a world of difference, especially for those who enjoy swimming, yoga,or simply going barefoot

TIPS FOR MAINTAINING HEALTHY FEET

1Daily checks - look for cuts,blisters,redness,or swelling

2 Keep them clean and dry - moisture can invite infections,so dry well after showers

3.Wear appropriate footwear - shoes that fit well and provide support prevent a range of issues

4 Trim nails carefully - cut nails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails

5 Moisturise your feet - hydrated skin is less likely to crack, especially around the heels

6 See a specialist when needed - don? t hesitate to consult a podiatrist for any unusual symptoms

CONCLUSION - INVEST IN YOURFOOT HEALTH

Foot health is a cornerstone of overall well-being Healthy feet mean improved mobility, less pain and the confidence to stay active and engaged in daily life Whether you?re an athlete or simply looking to improve your quality of life, regular foot care is a small investment with a big payoff After all,a strong foundation leads to a better, more mobile and more comfortable life

BACK CHAT with Dr Jack

?New Year,New You ? but is your body ready??asks doctor of chiropractic, Dr Jack Cleeve

As the calendar flips to January, the gym memberships soar, running shoes make their way out of the cupboard and fitness plans kick into high gear It?s an inspiring time, fuelled by resolutions to get fit, stay active and prioritise health But here?s the twist:by the third week of January,I often see a surge of people in practice, wincing with pain or struggling to move freely Why? Because they?ve unknowingly pushed their bodies too hard, too fast, without addressing underlying issues first

Your body is like a house? you wouldn? t build an extension on crumbling foundations Yet so many dive into new exercise regimes without checking if their body is functioning as it should Misalignment, joint restrictions and muscular imbalance create a shaky base, increasing the risk of injury when you add stress through exercise

Here?s the good news:chiropractic care can be the cornerstone of your health strategy this year Regular

adjustments don? t just relieve pain? they improve alignment, mobility, and balance, helping you to perform better in your chosen activity

PRACTICALTIPSFORJANUARY:

Ease into exercise with a mix of cardio strength, and stretching

Prioritise form over intensity? quality trumps quantity

Book a chiropractic check-up to ensure your body is aligned and ready to handle the new challenges

This year, don? t just aim to get fit? aim to stay fit By addressing your foundation first, you?ll not only reach your goals faster but do so with less risk of setbacks Let?s make 2025 the year you move better, feel better and live better Your first step? Slimming

HAVEYOURCAKEAND LOSEWEIGHT TOO!

Donna

Simpson explains how she lost six stone without giving up dessert

?Welcome to The Great British Bake Off ?in our house, those words mean it?s time to settle down with a cuppa and something sweet,as we see what?s in store for the contestants that week I love cooking and baking for my family, and just like those bakers in the famous white tent,I like to challenge myself to whip up cakes, pudding and desserts ? only I now make them the Slimming World way! With a few simple swaps and a dash of creative thinking,I?ve made Food Optimising sponges, cookies, flans and mousses that won? t damage my weight loss

still lose weight I was even more surprised I could bake cakes and eat dessert every day if I wanted to That was the decider we just had to give it a go!

Once we started following the Slimming World plan,we realised we really could enjoy our favourite foods and lose weight Food

Optimising is all about normal everyday foods that you?ll find in your fridge or cupboard ? you don? t have to follow a special ?diet? It?s more about making small changes, which add up to a healthier way of cooking and eating that you actually want to stick to.

I married Mark in 2012,after five years as a single parent With three children between us,we quickly became a happy family unit, enjoying meals together, treats on the sofa and trips to the coffee shop Unfortunately, our lovely new life soon started to settle on my hips and my weight gradually crept up

After a few years of telling myself that ?big blondes have more fun?,I reached my heaviest weight of 18st 3lbs and was wearing size-22/24 clothes Mark had put on weight too, and,as a keen biker, was disappointed when he couldn? t fit into his leathers any more.It was time to take action!

We decided to join Slimming World together I?d been on one diet or another for the past 25 years and nothing had worked long term but from our very first night in group,I realised Slimming World was going to be different

I love cooking, baking and eating ? and I love feeding my family and friends,so I was delighted to hear that I could carry on cooking hearty meals like lasagne, steak and chips, roast dinners and stroganoff and

Slimming World gives you support with the psychological and emotional side of things too, which helped me gain greater self-awareness resulting in me being able to develop strategies that helped me to stay on track

I have now lost six stone, having discovered a brilliant balance of loving food and being a healthy weight.

When Mark and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary we posed for a new set of wedding photos I swapped my old size-16 dress for a size-12 gown, and Mark, who lost 4st,got on his beloved bike and rode in as my knight in shining leathers! It was the perfect way to celebrate our love and the fact that we both looked and felt incredible!

Hygge

HOME

Create a hygge home with Tracie Fry

December with all its fun and rushing around has left many of us exhausted and in need of a change of pace, so January is the perfect time to introduce 'Hygge' Hygge pronounced Hyoo-guh is a Danish word, which loosely translated means cosy to foster a sense of cosiness, contentment, and well-being - the perfect antidote for Christmas! So this month I will be adding some Hygge to my lifestyle, starting with the best place to be on a cold wet weekend home So let's slow down the pace of life, enjoy the simple pleasures and create a cosy home and a Hygge lifestyle

1.

The magic of candlelight - that soft flickering glow,is instantly relaxing and great for creating a cosy atmosphere Avoid paraffin candles with artificial perfumes if you can as these are not good for you; instead opt for a soy candle scented with comforting essential oils I would recommend bergamot for its refreshing warm scent and geranium which is sweet and known for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety Just one candle can create a sense of calm, make it a dozen and you've got a magical centrepiece for a relaxing dinner party

3.

2.

Create a book nook - take some time away from technology, switch off the TV,put away the phone and enjoy the quiet create a comfy corner filled with plump cushions and fluffy throws Listen to the wind blowing, the rain on the windows and curl up with a good book (we have recommendations on our book page) The Hygge lifestyle encourages rest and making time to recharge your batteries - it needn't be reading - crossword puzzles, knitting or simply gazing out of the window as the world goes by,but take time for you

Nature at home - nature is vital for well-being and happiness The Danes believe it's the simple things in life that matter most as they bring us joy and happiness It's easy to bring a little piece of nature indoors - maybe some driftwood from the beach, pine cones from a winter walk,or hand-thrown pottery from a local artist, these things ground us and bring a sense of calm to our homes I really like old wooden chopping boards, worn and smooth from years of use, solid, tactile and somehow reassuring - much nicer to use than the new plastic ones - take a look around your home and you'll be surprised at what you value and what brings you comfort

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Creating the perfect kitchen for you

If you ask someone what their favourite room in the house is,invariably they will reply ?the kitchen? Although the kitchen?s number one function is,and always will be,the place to cook and store food, these days it serves many purposes

The kitchen is being called the new living room - the beating heart of the home for cooking, eating, bonding, having fun, relaxing with family and friends and in some cases working in too It?s now a multi-purpose hub and the perfect canvas to express your personality, setting the tone for the rest of the home while creating an environment that fits your family?s needs

There?s so much to consider as you develop your perfect kitchen Will you choose traditional shaker or sleek contemporary doors? Calming neutrals or beautifully bold colours? How will you get the lighting just right? Getting it right and finding that wow factor isn? t always easy,so calling in a professional to help can help you make the right choices and help you save time and money

A renovated kitchen can also push your home?s sale price up,so investing in your kitchen can not only add the wow factor to your home,it can also add value!

FAMILY PROTECTION

Why it's important by the team at Mortgage Style

What would you do if you or your partner were taken ill or had an accident and could no longer work? Could you afford to stay in your home, paying the mortgage and your bills?

January is a good time to check you have the right level of protection for your family ? you?ve just spent Christmas enjoying each other?s company,it?s now time to focus on making sure you?re all provided for should the worst happen

There are many myths around protection but here are a couple that we think it?s important to debunk:

?It never pays out?

So many people believe insurance firms will do everything they can to get out of paying claims, but that?s not the case Scottish Widows data reports that,in 2023,98%of all claims they received were paid out* (those not paid were for cases where clients lied about their health conditions when they applied)

Aviva told us about 56-year-old Judie, who,in 2019 happened to receive a standard letter saying her policy with them was close to ending She called to extend it and while on the phone, mentioned that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer Judie didn? t expect to be covered but Aviva told her she was and money was in her account the next day! ?It won? t happen to me?

The other major barrier to arranging protection is the

thought that those awful events like a critical illness diagnosis or a life-changing accident won? t happen to you

They could and they might It?s simply better to be prepared

Aviva told us about another of their clients,Linda, who took out critical illness cover when she bought her house. In 2018 Linda was diagnosed with bowel cancer and made a claim against her policy which allowed her to pay off her mortgage She said ??you don? t know whether the cancer?s going to come back or not If you?ve got that relief in knowing that your mortgage is paid for,and you?re not going to get turfed out of your house ? it?s a wonderful feeling!?

GIVING TREE

Some children and their parents who usually wake up to very little on Christmas morning might have found this year a little different thanks to the gift tree at Portishead Methodist Church

As we headed in to the festive season children from The Nursery in Portishead learnt all about the art of giving as they headed to the tree outside the High Street church which had scores of labels hanging from it,each one detailing a gift someone would love to receive this Christmas The children chose some of the labels and The Nursery then provided the gifts suggested on the labels and returned them to the church
